Stewart weighed in on the oil disaster in Louisiana last night, breaking into renditions of West Side Story favorites like “I Feel Gritty” and “Obama’s Katrina.” Meanwhile, in a speech somewhere between Braveheart and an odd marketing campaign for an M&M Statue of Liberty, Steven Colbert emoted solidarity with New Yorkers over the Times Square bomb threat (still, few seem too shaken over it). Source: Entertainment - Google News | 4 May 2010 | 12:39 am Industry Roundup: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Takes On Two Thrillers![]() JG-L Doubles Up: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in final negotiations to star in Premium Rush, a "chase thriller" directed by David Koepp, and the actor is also in talks to take on the lead in Looper, a sci-fi thriller which would reteam him with Brick director Rian Johnson. In Rush, Gordon-Levitt would play a New York City bike messenger who picks up an envelope at Columbia University and is subsequently chased by a "dirty cop"... who apparently wants that envelope really, really badly. In Looper, which is “set during a future in which time travel has been invented” and men are sent back in time to assassinate criminals, Gordon-Levitt would play a man who is sent back in time to kill himself. Apparently it takes not one but two mindless thrillers to get over being dumped by Zooey Deschanel. [Heat Vision/HR] Spielberg Bets On Horse: Steven Spielberg’s next directing project will be the drama War Horse, based on a 1982 young adult novel by Michael Morpurgo which was recently adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) and Richard Curtis (Pirate Radio) will write the film adaptation. The story follows the “epic tale” of a friendship between a boy and his horse, who face trials and tribulations during World War I. With Scorsese taking on Hugo Cabret and now this, it would appear the unlikely "children's book/legendary director" project is having its moment. [Risky Business/HR] First Pick: Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) is in final talks to direct the origins film X-Men: First Class for 20th Century Fox. Though it wasn’t looking hopeful that there would be an agreement between the two camps after talks broke off last week, discussions reportedly resumed today. The film will look at the friendship between Professor Xavier and Magneto as they open a school for mutants, and promises to feature lots of young mutants using totally inappropriate swear words. [Variety] Rockwell To Fight The Aliens: Sam Rockwell is reuniting with Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau for another comic book adaptation in the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens. Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford are already signed on for the graphic novel adaptation in which cowboys and Indians join forces against the alien enemy. Rockwell will play a bar owner named Doc who joins in the crusade against the aliens. Rockwell's recent work makes him especially qualified for the film, having ventured to space (as an astronaut in Moon) and having appeared in a movie called Gentleman Broncos. [Heat Vision/HR] Thompson's Crusade: One of Hunter S. Thompson’s last pieces has been acquired by Motion Picture Corporation of America to be turned into a feature film. The studio has picked up the rights to "Prisoner of Denver," a June 2004 Vanity Fair article that Thompson co-wrote with the magazine’s contributing editor Mark Seal. The article examined the “injustice and abuse” of Colorado’s legal system in light of a 21-year-old woman who was charged with murder even though she was already in a parole car in police custody when the crime in question occurred. Given a life sentence, she initiated a correspondence with Thompson from jail; he worked to campaign for her, reaching out to celebrity friends like Johnny Depp and Jack Nicholson, and her sentence was overturned in 2005. You just know Depp is giddy tonight at the possibility of playing both Thompson and himself in this. [HR] Big Gets Bigger: The cast of the The Big Year, the upcoming birdwatching comedy featuring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, has expanded. Joining the cast are: Rashida Jones, Anjelica Huston, Jim Parsons, Rosamund Pike, JoBeth Williams, Brian Dennehy, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Anderson and Tim Blake Nelson. As if that weren’t enough, Kevin Pollack and Joel McHale are also in talks to come on board. Based on Mark Obmascik’s 1998 book, the David Frankel-directed film follows three men in competition to spot the rarest bird in the continent. Jones will play an “avid bird watcher” and the love interest of Black’s character and it's a tough call which of those two things will seem more preposterous on screen. [Variety] White's Weather: Jack White will go out on tour with his band the Dead Weather this summer, playing dates across the U.S. through early August in support of their new album, Sea of Cowards. Let's hope they leave their record player at home when they're out on the road though. There was no paperwork involved in the transaction, which took place weeks ago at a Connecticut shopping mall. The owner apparently told the investigators that the person who bought the car from him “was either Hispanic or Middle-Eastern,” and that he does not remember the buyer’s name, the Times reports. While the police and FBI on the case have ruled out the owner of the Pathfinder as a suspect, there are two people they are looking to question in connection with the case. One is a man who was seen in video footage running north on Broadway when the fire broke out, and the other is a man with dark hair in a different video who removed his shirt and placed it in a bag before walking out of the view of the camera (“"He may or may not have been involved in this incident,” Mayor Bloomberg said. "It was a hot day, maybe he was just changing his shirt.”) NYC police commissioner Ray Kelly also emphasized that these two men are “not suspects”:“These are people we would like to speak to,” he said. Meanwhile, there continues to be speculation over who was behind the attempt. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said investigators have some good leads, though he wouldn’t elaborate. Bloomberg told Katie Couric he thinks it could have been a domestic terrorist acting alone: "If I had to guess 25 cents, this would be exactly that. Homegrown, or maybe a mentally deranged person, or somebody with a political agenda that doesn't like the health care bill or something. It could be anything.” Kelly said it is too early to tell if this was the act of an individual or a larger network. Whoever it was, the White House used the T-word to describe the bomber: "I would say that was intended to terrorize, and I would say that whomever did that would be categorized as a terrorist,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. Update #1: Federal authorities have now identified the man who bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder used in the bomb attempt and are seeking to arrest him, the Times is reporting. The man, a Connecticut resident who bought the SUV in Bridgeport within the past three weeks, is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Pakistan who recently returned from a trip there. Officials are not publicly revealing his identity. The Journal is reporting that police found forensic evidence in the SUV, a fingerprint on one of the propane tanks, that belongs to “a man of Middle Eastern origin.” However, while this individual has been identified by authorities as well, it is unclear if he is the same man who purchased the car. Update #2: Connecticut resident Faisal Shahzad, a U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, was taken into custody just after midnight Tuesday morning, NBC News is reporting, in connection with the bomb attempt. Shahzad is believed to be the individual who bought the Nissan Pathfinder that was driven into Times Square Saturday night with a bomb. Update #3: Shahzad was arrested at a New York area-airport “apparently trying to flee,” according to one of the people briefed on the investigation, The Times says. Charges against him have not yet been announced. Update #4: More details are emerging about Shahzad, reported to be 30-years-old, and his arrest. NBC News says that Shahzad’s name was on an e-mail that was sent to the registered owner of the Pathfinder last month, which helped authorities to find Shahzad. “There is also independent evidence linking Faisal to the car itself, although the nature of that evidence was not disclosed,” according to the Atlantic. Shahzad was arrested at J.F.K. airport, multiple sources have confirmed, and the Atlantic says he will be brought before a judge Tuesday morning. Update #5: At a press conference early Tuesday morning, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder confirmed that Faisal Shahzad had been arrested at JFK airport. Holder said Shahzad was trying to board a flight to Dubai. "It was clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans," Holder said. Holder's full statement can be read here. Well, BP is only liable for $75 million for losses incurred by area businesses and government agencies, a relative drop in the bucket. BP and other oil companies, through a minimal tax, also contribute to the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to cover for the economic losses of such spills, but only $1 billion which isn't actually that much can be used for each spill incident. So three Democratic senators are pushing a new bill to raise that liability cap all the way to $10 billion. And to make the bill just a bit harder to oppose, they're calling it the "Big Oil Bailout Prevention Act," because there are few things more unpopular in this country right now than big oil and bailouts. If you vote against the bill, you might as well grow some chin hair and grab a pitchfork, because you're basically the devil. In moments guests will begin arriving on the red carpet for the Oscars of the East Coast, the city's most fashionable event, or as we like to think of it, an event with a red carpet that's actually interesting, and where 90 percent of the celebs walking it don't just look like pageant contestants. We'll be posting shots of the famous people as they arrive, but until then, here are some other fun bits of information to tide your inner red carpet/Anna Wintour/Vogue addict over: • Anna Wintour is considerably blonder! What will she wear tonight to offset the new dye job? Something icy? Or maybe sunny? A bright-yellow rain slicker in case the skies spew more moisture onto her perfectly blow-dried bob? In any case, at least now we know spring is really here. • Lady Gaga is performing, according to Guest of a Guest. Last week we revealed she will be dressed by Prada. So somewhere, right now, probably in a hotel room littered with cans of yellow hair paint, expensive bottled diet iced tea, and Skittles, tailors are contorting the diva into a garment we'll bet is made from something plastic-looking along with other unconventional materials (we're hoping for edible Swiftlet nests that Lady Gaga eats in lieu of whatever food they serve her). And it will probably turn into a disgusting, fat adult person unless you start worrying about it now. Reuters dug through the e-mails released this week by the U.S. Senate panel probing the firm, and found that Goldman had at least one other star in this field, one who goes by the awesome name of Cactus Raazi. In spring of 2007, when the housing market first began to tank, Raazi was hailed as a visionary by the firm's higher-ups.
This wasn't the first genius move Raazi ever made. According to his LinkedIn profile, Raazi worked on the business side of Rolling Stone before selling out to Goldman Sachs in 1997. Not only does she appear more on this season of The City, but Erin Kaplan also landed her a spot on the Today show to discuss Elle's "Body" issue and curvy — or often more accurately "curvy" — models landing more work in fashion. "It’s fashion’s job to sort of reject what’s going on every six months or so," Myers says. “We’ve had the glamazons — the tall skinny models — for a really long time.” But hey, we still have tall skinny models. Those haven't gone anywhere — just look at any runway show. Myers heralded Louis Vuitton and Prada for hiring Victoria's Secret models to walk their runway shows. Of the 47-year-old Elle Macpherson, who closed Louis Vuitton, Myers said, "She is not a skinny girl." Except she is skinny. She also offers a defense for Elle, which routinely shoots models Myers might actually consider skinny, explaining that we average chicks don't want to go out and buy things magazines sell if we see them on women who are like ourselves. Oh, right. That's because women's magazines make us feel bad about ourselves. But at least they think they're making progress. Could the supposed rise of curvaceous figures in fashion lead to bodacious Brazilians edging out Eastern Europeans as fashion's hottest faces? Lais Ribeiro, for one, is one of the most undeniably gorgeous models we've laid eyes on in years. And for a model who recently gave birth to her first child, she's making quite an impression on the industry. The 19-year-old's lean, athletic build is a much-welcome change to her (still) emaciated Eastern European counterparts. And her silky-smooth Brazilian skin made her instantly recognizable in the sea of pale-and-paler models that (still) dominate the catwalk. After debuting at rag & bone's fall 2010 show, Lais booked Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace in Milan alone. That is no small feat! The reason? There are no new revelations in the SHOCKING NEW REPORT that make the story any more credible than when the media looked into it and dismissed it during the presidential campaign. And then the story was deemed all the more dismissible because the Enquirer removed a claim that there is video evidence of the affair, which some outlets have labeled a "retraction." "Sites who reported we 'retracted' our story over the weekend are incorrect," said Enquirer Executive Editor Barry Levine in an email this morning. "How can you 'retract' a story we've never published in print in the first place?" Levine explains that "on Friday, our web editor picked up a great story from our sister publication Globe Magazine ... On Saturday, we simply edited down his original posting. The video line [about investigators looking for security footage of the liaison] was cut out — but it had nothing to do with the info being wrong." Later the video line was re-inserted, but with the caveat that no such tape may actually exist. Now it appears that all they have is a limo driver who says he drove the woman, Vera Baker, to a hotel where Barack Obama was present. For the record though, if the allegations ever prove to be true, and the Obama marriage isn't as perfect as it seems, we won't believe in anything ever again. I captured it and put it up on bwe.tv and it became the 304th (guess) most successful viral video of the past 2 years. Source: Best Week Ever | 3 May 2010 | 11:42 am Biggest Pop Culture Controversies: The Office (UK) vs. The Office (US)Every Monday, thanks to our sponsor Oreo Cakesters, we bring you pop culture controversies. We’ve pitted TV’s biggest comedians (Jay Leno vs Conan O’Brien) and Vampires and Sorcerers (Harry Potter vs Twilight) against each other. Up this week: two of TV’s biggest comedies. “The British one was better!” = An ubiquitous, almost necessary refrain that quickly attached itself to anything written about the first two seasons of the Steve Carell American rebrand, and for a season or two, who could argue? The British Office was, and remains, a landmark achievement in television and humor (humour), providing more simultaneous laughs and insight into human banalities in its tidy two-season run than several entire art movements — how could a remake of an instant classic ever hope to equal, let alone surpass, its original? Now, however, the American Office is well into its sixth season with no signs of stopping, and has clearly and unarguably carved out its own identity, at least differentiating itself — if perhaps not surpassing — the scope of the original with its expanded universe. The plots and characters have evolved to a level of detail that its intractely scripted predecesor simply couldn’t hope to achieve in its all-too-brief lifespan. Is this artistic dilution? Or just a bunch more awesome episodes of a thing we love? 13 episodes of tidy, impossibly dense, start-to-finish history-making genius, or its expanded, evolved, successully mainstreamed offspring — who do you pick? Who CAN you pick? Feel free to debate away in the comments, or just take the cop-out (and ultimately correct) answer and just love them both “equally,” like your own painfully awkward children.
