Since the SEC civil fraud suit against Goldman Sachs laid bare the ugly details of the transactions that allowed John Paulson to make billions shorting the housing market, parents at the Spence School, the Upper East Side all-girls day school attended by at least one of Paulson's daughters, have taken to UrbanBaby.com to vigorously debate Paulson's actions and his recent election to the school board. "I don't believe that the way he structured his deal was illegal, but it was certainly immoral and displayed all the instincts of a social parasite," wrote one poster. "I wonder how everybody feels to have him on the board of Spence." Wrote another:
To be sure, like most New York private schools, Spence would prefer not to have for board members individuals whose ethics are being questioned in the international media. But the SEC has gone out of their way to acknowledge that Paulson wasn't responsible for any wrongdoing, and the school has an endowment of around $100 million to manage. They wouldn't really kick Paulson off the board, would they? Actually, they might, sources tell Daily Intel. "It's payback time for Paulson," one fellow hedge-fund manager and Spence parent gloated via text, suggesting that the Queens native turned sudden billionaire wasn't too popular among the old-money denizens of the school, anyway. A spokesman for Mr. Paulson indicated to the Journal that he had no intention of stepping down. But he may not have a choice. “I understand the board will ask him to step down," one parent who spoke with two of the school's board members yesterday told Daily Intel. "We just simply don't have a culture of allowing board members with this much controversial publicity in a leadership role." Spence has had problems with other high-profile Wall Streeters before. Last year, Moody's downgraded their debt, citing their disapproval of the fact that the school kept 25 percent of the endowment's money in one of Stanley Druckenmiller’s hedge funds. His wife, Fiona, was a member of the board. Members of the board and the school's administration did not return a call for comment. Armel Leslie, a spokesman for Paulson, says: "Mr. Paulson has not heard of any concerns from the Spence Board and does not expect to."

A lot of very rich people's children are probably displeased behind these doors today. Thirteenth is the twelfth loser. Yesterday Forbes released their list of the best prep schools in America, which really is basically a list of the best prep schools in New York, because seven of the top twenty are here in the city. For number of fancy schools, we're apparently only rivaled by Boston, which had three in the top twenty. The order of New York schools is this: Trinity (which topped the whole list), Horace Mann (second), Brearley (fourth), Collegiate (seventh), Spence (ninth), Chapin (eleventh), and Dalton (thirteenth). Now, obviously no list like this is ever that meaningful — we'll leave out our opinion of the placement and order of Andover, Exeter, and St. Paul's — but we're sure there are plenty of people who have something to say about it. For example, the first person to point out the list to us and indicate its importance was, as you might guess, a Trinity grad. Here's how Forbes explains how it came to its conclusion: Half of the ranking was weighed equally between student/faculty ratio, percentage of faculty that possess advanced degrees and size of the school's endowment. The other half was based on percentage of graduates, over the last five years, that matriculated into 10 top colleges: Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. This list, while arbitrary, reflects the fact that many parents send their kids to prep school specifically so they can get into the most prestigious universities.

A series of high-end fashion and accessories stores are opening on the West Village street, according to The Wall Street Journal. French retailer A.P.C. just signed a lease. So did the menswear shop Freemans Sporting Club. Women's boutique Pinky Otto is opening this month. And Marc Jacobs will open a bookstore this winter at the old location of Biography Book Shop — which had been there for twenty years — the fifth shop in the designer's Bleecker Street empire. And the gentrification of Bleecker Street isn't likely to end anytime soon. The area's largest private landlord, William Gottlieb Estate, is aggressively courting even more high-end tenants. While local residents miss the small businesses, for the retailers, it's a business move. According to brokers, Bleecker Street's new tenants (who often pay upwards of $60,000 in rent) worry less about turning a profit in the Village than about being seen by tourists and other shoppers. "They are in that location to promote the brand," explained Faith Hope Consolo, a broker and retail specialist for Prudential Douglas Elliman. "It's like taking a full-page ad every day," she said.
