Source: Entertainment - Google News | 30 Apr 2010 | 2:27 am Last Night on Late Night: Schwarzenegger Thinks Leno is an Idiot![]() It’s not every day that the Governator himself drops by to chat. And it’s not every day that Leno can show off his (awful) Austrian accent to said Governator, though that’s exactly what he did, eliciting a “You’re an idiot” from Schwarzenegger. Meanwhile, Joe Biden isn’t the only politician with a deep founded hatred for over-sensitive microphones. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown experienced the same PR nightmare, calling a sweet old English lady a “bigot,” allowing fellow Brit John Oliver to weigh in on The Daily Show. “We're prejudiced against other Europeans,” Oliver explains to Stewart. “There's a nasty old crone who thinks Hollandaise sauce is too ethnic.” Jimmy Fallon helps audience members bond over shared experiences. And finally, Gwyneth Paltrow is surprised she was invited back to Letterman, since she doesn’t have any scandals to call her own. Watch our compilation to see what you missed. Barrymore will play a Greenpeace activist in the Ken Kwapis-directed film, which is based on a true story. Krasinski will take on the role of a small town newspaper reporter who gives lots of knowing winks and smirks to the camera. [Deadline] She's The One: Lionsgate has acquired the distribution rights to the Katherine Heigl crime-thriller One for the Money, based on the first of Janet Evanovich’s best-selling Stephanie Plum novels. At the age of 30, Plum is divorced and jobless, so she takes a job in the bail bond business; in her first case, she has to investigate a local cop wanted of murder who... is the same guy who broke her heart in high school. Of course he is. [Variety] Agron Four The Win: Dianna Agron (Glee’s Quinn) has won the female romantic lead in I Am Number Four, the DreamWorks adaptation of an upcoming young adult sci-fi book by James Frey (!) and Jobie Hughes. The film follows a group of nine aliens who have escaped their home planet right before it was annihilated and must hide out on earth disguised as humans. Agron will play a girl dating a high school jock... who falls for one of the aliens, the titular Number Four (Alex Pettyfer). Yo Four, if she tells you she's pregnant and the baby's yours, do not take her at face value! [Heat Vision/HR] Trio Takes Tower: Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman are joining forces to bring Stephen King’s The Dark Tower book series to both the big and small screens. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company originally had the rights to Tower but returned them to King; now, the high-powered trio are looking to adapt the books into a movie (to be directed by Howard and written by Goldsman) which would then lead into a TV series. When Abrams had the rights, the idea was that it would present a new television project for Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse to work on once Lost goes off the air, but they “realized they wouldn't be able to do an adaptation justice, and they gave the rights back to King.” If the guys who made arguably the most ambitious show of the past decade feel that way, these Tower books must be insane. [Heat Vision/HR] Good To Be King: Michael Patrick King, writer/producer/director of Sex and The City, will be returning to television. Warner Bros. Television is finalizing a deal with King under which he would launch his own TV production company, focusing on cultivating new writers and overseeing new projects. The deal would start after Sex and The City 2 is released this summer. If his new television ventures are anything like his most recent one, the vastly underrated 2005 HBO comedy series The Comeback, we say: “Note to self: we want to see this!” [Deadline] Rock On The Run: Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. The Rock) will star in the action thriller Protection, which follows a Mexico City security operative who has to “smuggle the daughter of a high-ranking judge across the border” as he is chased by “corrupt cops, drug lords and white collar U.S. criminal forces.” The film, directed by Simon West (When a Stranger Calls), will be shot in New Mexico, thankfully, as his job would be way harder if he had to deal with getting her into Arizona. [HR] James Goes Boom: Kevin James will star in Sony’s Here Comes the Boom, an action-comedy that will also star Adam Sandler. This will be James’ third upcoming film with the studio, as he will be starring in this summer’s Grown Ups and next summer’s The Zookeeper. Salma Hayek is in talks for the female lead in the film, which undoubtedly would be one of those classic "there is no way you would even be making eye contact with Kevin James if this was real life" love interest roles. [Variety] High Time: The National will be touring in support of their album High Violet this summer, beginning May 5 through to the end of August. Don't fret, non-U.S. fans, the tour won't be strictly national - they’ll be hopping over to Europe for a number of dates. Conservative lawmakers in Oklahoma have said they are planning to introduce a bill that is similar to Arizona’s hotly-debated immigration law. Republican state Rep. The bill would likely include asset seizure and forfeiture provisions for immigration-related crimes, as well as more severe penalties for immigrants caught with guns, he said. On the first single from his new album, Eminem throws his old one under the bus. The exact words: “Let’s be honest, that last Relapse CD was ‘ehh’ / perhaps I ran them accents into the ground / relax I ain’t going back to that now.” While some of the nearly two million people that bought Relapse would surely disagree, we very much appreciate the candor, especially the bit about the accents (those were, indeed, the worst). It’s funny, though — yeah, the reviews weren’t amazing, but generally Relapse was seen as a success. At the very least, no one was expecting Em to call himself out for it. So, what does that mean for Recovery? Well, if “Not Afraid” is any indication, a whole bunch of motivational-speaker rap. It’s all about Eminem coming out alive on the other side of his drug addiction, positive and refreshed. This is the chorus: “I’m not afraid / to take a stand / everybody / come take my hand / we’ll walk this road together, through the storm / whatever weather, cold or warm.” Which is, of course, a legitimately valid and, surely, genuine sentiment. It also makes this the sappiest goddamn thing Eminem’s ever done. (Need more proof? Same song, third verse: “I’ll shoot for the moon but I’m too busy gazing at stars.”) That said, “Not Afraid,” we’re confident, will be a huge hit, and sincerely affect the lives of millions of people. That means all we can do now is wait for Recovery 2’s first single, where Eminem will hopefully apologize for it. Tomorrow sees the release of Bayer’s first feature film — a darker, camp-averse reboot of the Nightmare on Elm Street horror franchise, with Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley taking over as razor-gloved, dream-invading sociopath Freddy Krueger. Bayer recently spoke to us about working with Michael Bay, bucking the 3-D trend, and having Freddy haunt his dreams for real. You directed Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video back in 1991. Why did it take until now to make a feature film? Like a lot of reboots, this one explores the back story of the franchise’s main character. How do you strike a balance between catering to filmgoers interested in the underpinnings of Freddy Krueger’s psyche and those who just want to see some teenagers get sliced up in their dreams? You’ve kept Freddy’s famed fedora/sweater/glove ensemble, but made him look more like a real burn victim. What went into rethinking the character’s look? How many of the eight previous Nightmare movies have you seen? Any favorites? The studio was pushing to convert Nightmare to 3-D, but you refused. Given that everything is in 3-D these days, how did you win that argument? You’ve already said you won’t direct a Nightmare sequel. What if the studio offered you a James Cameron-sized paycheck? Did Freddy appear in any of them? But they got a sidekick: a sheep! André Leon Talley, the best judge of anything on television ever, commended the girls who took advantage of their woolly friend, and reprimanded those who didn't. “I’m more intrigued by the sheep," he tells one girl wearing an ugly dress he calls "dreckitude." "If I were you, I would have had some sort of interaction with the little princeling sheep. It is Wuthering Heights, but I’m not getting that emotion from you." Usually how it goes is she'll display her hands and declare that she is "kicking it old-school" or "taking it old-school" with a "poor man's TelePrompTer." In a speech at a March 12 fund-raiser, Palin said she'd been "busted for using a poor man's TelePrompTer. I was just kicking it old-school." At a campaign stop for John McCain on March 26, she said that it’s “time to take it old-school again, resort to the old poor man’s version of the TelePrompTer.” The next day at a Tea Party rally in Nevada, she proclaimed, "No TelePrompTer, time to kick it old-school!" During an event with Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann on April 7, Palin once again referred to her palm notes as “a poor man’s version of a TelePrompTer — we’re still kicking it old-school.” Then during her speech at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference two days later, she mentioned the notes again, and, almost as an afterthought, added, “Taking it old-school, poor man’s TelePrompTer.” If this were just a completely unfunny joke that Palin seems way too fond of, that would be one thing. But now it's spreading. In her "Time 100" write-up of Glenn Beck, Palin used the phrase to refer to another person's actions for the first time.
Totally gratuitous use of "kicking it old-school" there! This is getting out of hand, pun intended. Someone needs to have a heart-to-heart with Palin and let her know that this is not a phrase people use. Preferably one of her children, since they are probably embarrassed. She was 11. Other stars that night were never more than five or so feet away from their publicists, who would (not always) gently cough if the interview went too long or a question was inappropriate. We talked to the rest of the cast, and when it came time to talk to Dakota, who was wearing a pretty sundress, her mother introduced them politely. Then the woman walked away to another part of the movie-theater lobby and left us to sit down on a banquette with Dakota alone. Not only could we have asked any incredibly awful question we pleased, we could have tucked her under his arm and run away with her. But her mother clearly knew that Dakota could take care of herself and was poised enough not to be thrown by anything so silly as a rude question or a rogue kidnapping. Intel thought of that moment today when we read on nylonmag.com that Dakota took a tour of NYU's Gallatin School. Because we don't tend to believe most starlets really have the self-possession to make it through four years of college (even a "make up your own curriculum" one like Gallatin. The Olsen twins couldn't manage it!). But there's something about that Dakota Fanning that makes us think she could be one of the rare actresses to qualify for the Natalie Portman Exception. Reaction #1: Frankly, it’s shocking that Steve Carell is still on The Office. The show’s debatable consistency aside (I still love it), he could’ve moved on to a full-time film career any time after the first season, and his decision to stay this long seems to be grounded more in his love for the show and the character than anything personal or financial. Reaction #2: The next season of The Office will be its seventh season. That’s a lot even for successful shows, but Seinfeld squeezed out nine, and while The Simpsons peaked in Seasons 5-7, it still produced plenty of quality after that, if less and less frequently. Reaction #3: That said, the show’s just not going to work without Steve Carell, even if it stays on the air another year or two. We’d all rather see The Office die with dignity than drag on as a shell of itself, making a Complete DVD Box Set less and less desirable; by the end of That 70s Show, the cast was down to like, Hyde and Tommy Chong’s intern. Reaction #4: That “that said” point said, I would be intrigued to see where the plot would go without Michael Scott, and to see the plot leading up to him leaving. I’ve been calling for a major Office plot shakeup for a while (any time something major happens, it dissipates back to normal within a few episodes), and this would give the writers and producers that chance. Reaction #5: With the current state of NBC, The Office isn’t going off the air until someone pries it from its cold, dead peacock claw. This may not be a good thing. So our Open Thread Doubleshot Question to you is: Do you see Steve Carell leaving The Office after next season, and how would that make you feel about the show? Is it the right time? Or is he just negotiating for a contract renewal? Leave your reactions in the comments, fellow Office-specific-things-carer-abouters. Source: Best Week Ever | 29 Apr 2010 | 12:20 pm Fashion Week Unveils New Plans for Lincoln Center![]() Stephanie Winston Wolkoff and the rendering of the new Lincoln Center area. New York is in for an all-new Fashion Week come September. The event has a new location (Lincoln Center) and a new chief planner (ex-Vogue staffer Stephanie Winston Wolkoff), but more importantly, the spirit of inclusiveness. "I want to welcome you to a whole new era, and we're starting here today," said CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg at the announcement of the new Fashion Week layout this morning at Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium. "We want to make New York Fashion Week the absolute most styling Fashion Week. And we will make it happen. We made a commitment. It won't be immediately perfect. But we definitely will [make it happen]. I think it's going to be a lot of fun." The campus will be much bigger than Bryant Park, from the lobby to the runway spaces, explained Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Director of Fashion for Lincoln Center, or essentially the new face of Fashion Week. Attendees will enter on a red carpet and enjoy a larger lobby, which will also include a schedule of the day's events projected on the walls. The runway venues are comparable in size to those in Bryant Park. What was the Tent at Bryant Park is now the Theatre at Lincoln Center, a 969-seat venue with a larger backstage area. It will also be the only venue to house a video wall, so designers can play videos during the runway show. The new Promenade is called the Stage, a 740-seat space. And the new Salon is named the Studio, a 396-seat space. Lincoln Center will also house one 125-person venue for presentations — Fashion Week's first presentation-only space — named the Box. (Other presentation spaces will also be available around the city, but this one is being built specifically for Fashion Week.) IMG vice-president Zach Eichman announced a partnership with Fashion GPS to centralize invitations, RSVPs, and check-in. If designers so choose, they can have a bar code attached to invitations, and guests can check themselves in. So long check-in lines could be a thing of the past! Lisa Holladay, national manager of experiential marketing for Mercedes-Benz, confirmed that the company will stay on as the sponsor until 2013. Beyond the largest public fashion show in New York history scheduled for Fashion's Night Out on September 10, non-industry folk can view collections in special presentations. "We're also going to have presentation centers outside the tents," Wolkoff told us after the presentation. "It will allow people to have flexibility so they can be inside the tents for the trade but also outside the tents with the consumer." Also expect to see thirteen poster-size television screens along 65th Street. Designers can live-stream their shows onto these, if they so choose, interspersed with photographs from the day's events. Wolkoff also hinted at the possibility of pop-up shops, designer lectures, and other opportunities for the public to engage in Fashion Week. Wolkoff ideally would like every designer to show at Lincoln Center. "Ultimately, I think Lincoln Center is able to facilitate the need to hold all of these other shows," Wolkoff explained. "Whether it be all of them, I'm not really saying that, because there are a lot. But I think that we can definitely bring many more under one umbrella and one destination so that all the editors and press are not running all over to different places and it's more centralized." Fern Mallis, who stepped down from her position as IMG senior vice-president yesterday, told us that today's announcement marks "a whole new ballgame" for Fashion Week. Mallis will stay on as a consultant, but not indefinitely. "You know, it's all contractual. But we'll see. If they continue to need me and I want to do it, then great, we'll go on longer than what we agreed to now." In the meantime, Mallis also explained plans for her new consulting business, which will include more than just fashion clients. "I have long experience in interior furnishings and the design world of style and architecture and design and I love that," she explained. "I do a lot of things internationally. I'm back and forth to India a gazillion times. And there are books, media. There's all sorts of things." And just because Mallis isn't running Fashion Week doesn't mean that she won't be there. "I'll be at the shows in September. They absolutely want me to be there and I want to be there," she said. "And I'm assuming the designers are still going to invite me to their shows." News: Entertainment Reviews | 29 Apr 2010 | 11:40 am Who Cares About Twetiquette When There’s TTMI?
In today’s celebrated New York Times, we learn that people have their panties in a wad over celebrities who tweet flawed grammar and misspelled words. (John Cusack, btw, is barely literate.) But isn’t this like worrying about a mosquito that’s biting your arm when you’re hanging out in the middle of the street during The Running of the Bulls? These Grammar Cops should take a good hard look at Twitter — especially celeb Twitpics. They’ll see Adrianne Curry with a phallic-shaped Darth Vader stuffed between her breasts. They’ll see Shaq tweeting pictures of a blister on his toe. They’ll see Lindsay Lohan topless, a needle sticking out of Dave Navarro’s arm, Kim Kardashian in the middle of a dental procedure, a naked Donald Faison taking a dump, and of course a large collection of Coco’s plump rump in variously staged poses. The problem with Twitter isn’t about poor grammar, or Twetiquette as it’s referred to in The Times. It’s about TTMI — Twitter Too Much Information. Yeah, sorry for hitting you with yet another Twitter acronym. But it’s worth pointing out that Twitter, combined with the paparazzi, has removed the barrier that used to shield the general public from the insanity of celebrities. Just imagine it’s Feb. 7, 1953, and Humphrey Bogart tweets pics of his bloody mouth missing two teeth after the car accident he had while filming “The Bit of Devil” in Italy. Or imagine him snapping a picture of Lauren Bacall’s ass and sharing it with his legions of followers. Um, never. Celebrities from the Golden Age of Hollywood had God-like personas to uphold — and they had an army of smart professional handlers who knew that actors and actresses should not speak without being scripted (at all other times, muzzled!) and should not have their picture taken without thoughtful staging (otherwise, out of sight!). It’s only because of these handlers that we had people to idolize and something to strive for in life. Now we only have George Clooney to emulate. All others have ruined themselves with TTMI. For proof, check out the gallery below and these horrifying celebrity tweets compiled by The Huffington Post.
