Last Night on Late Night: Robert Downey Jr. Is Afraid of Mickey Rourke

An Iron Man 2 story was derailed last night when Robert Downey Jr. became concerned by David Letterman's characterization of his co-star Mickey Rourke. Luckily, the two men are nothing if not tactful and the situation resolved itself rather neatly, like the end of a Wodehouse novel. In other matters of civility, Michael Caine told Jimmy Fallon about what he wanted to say to the Queen during his knighthood ceremony, but thankfully didn't, and Jon Stewart made an impassioned plea to Apple about their mishandling of the iPhone 4G investigation. Finally, Stephen Colbert took a hallucinogen on his show and was greeted by an ideal spirit guide: comedian Eugene Mirman. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Sarah Silverman To Waltz With Rogen and Williams

Let's Dance: Sarah Silverman is in negotiations to join the indie dramedy Take This Waltz, starring Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams. The film, written and directed by Sarah Polley, will follow a young woman (Williams) whose infidelity struggles lead her to the discovery that she is “addicted to the honeymoon period of her relationships.” Silverman will play the sister of Williams’ character… kidding! She’ll play Rogen’s sister, duh. [Variety]

Double Team: Richard Gere and Topher Grace will star in The Double, a spy thriller that centers on the investigation of the murder of a senator in Washington at the hands of “a Soviet assassin long thought to be dead.” Gere’s retired CIA operative will team with Grace’s young FBI agent to find the killer. Screenwriter Michael Brandt will make his directorial debut with the film, which was written by Brandt and writing partner Derek Haas (Wanted, 3:10 to Yuma). The casting is sure to excite fervent Gere Heads with bad tastes in their mouths since Nights in Rodanthe, and Videogum.com. [HR]

Commando Redux: 20th Century Fox is moving forward with a remake of Commando, charging David Ayer (Training Day) with writing and directing a new version of the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger film which catapulted him to stardom. Ayer will be putting his own “real-world spin” on the original story, as the plot will be centered on a retired elite special forces operative who sees his daughter get kidnapped and is told she’ll die unless he gets on a plane and “kills the rival of a nasty exiled dictator.” So it sounds like “real-world spin” is basically just code for “more boring” since in the original, of course, Schwarzenegger took down everyone everywhere. [Deadline]

Six It Is: ABC has ordered six episodes of The Six, a game show which originated in Russia in which teams work together to solve "nontrivial logic puzzles" within 60 seconds. “When was the last time you saw a group dynamic that wasn't about backstabbing?" Merv Griffin Entertainment TV president Roy Bank said to promote the show. Eh, nice try, Roy, but we’ll stick with Jersey Shore. [HR]

Inferno For Kids: Juan Jose Campanella - who directed The Secret in Their Eyes, this year’s Oscar winner for best foreign-language film - will make his English-language directing debut with Heck, an adaptation of a children’s fantasy novel. Heck, written by Dale E. Basye, is described as a "kids’ version of Dante’s Inferno." What great news since when we read the Inferno, all we could think about was how awesome it would be if someone could find a way to make its cheery tone and fun plot into a film accessible for kids. [Heat Vision/HR]

Idol Worship: The American Idols Live! 2010 tour will begin July 1 in Auburn Hills, Michigan and stop in 49 cities before finishing September 14 in Pittsburgh. The top 10 finalists will all be along for the fun, though good luck staying awake in the audience without the presence of the loopy Seacrest/bitchy Simon/flirty Kara triumvirate. [Billboard]

Happy News For Perry
: Lionsgate has acquired the rights to an 11th Tyler Perry film, Madea’s Big Happy Family, which is scheduled for an April 22, 2011 release. Presumably this will be followed by Madea’s Too Big Happy Family. [Deadline]

Cosgrove Makes The Leap: Paramount has hired screenwriter Emma Forrest to work on the script for How Could You Do This To Me?, a family comedy for the studio’s Nickelodeon film label constructed as a vehicle for iCarly’s Miranda Cosgrove, who is trying to make the jump to the big screen. The story is focused on a teenage girl (Cosgrove) whose life actually improves when her parents get divorced; when they try to get back together, she tries to keep them apart. Seems appropriate that a tween star who is basically the Anti-Lohan will star in what sounds like the anti-Parent Trap. [HR]

Hundreds of MTA Workers Will Not Be Celebrating On July 4th This Year

The MTA plans to lay off hundreds of bus drivers and subway workers by the Fourth of July, as the agency prepares to enforce its dramatic service cuts. More than 550 bus workers will lose their jobs by June 27 when dozens of bus lines and two subways are eliminated. An additional 122 subway employees will be out of work on July 4, the agency said. The service cuts are expected to save the MTA about $93 million, most of which will be due to the layoffs, as it attempts to close an $800 million budget shortfall. [NYT]

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Could Become Worst In U.S. History

Following last week’s oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, the estimated amount of oil leaking underwater has increased to 5,000 barrels a day, which is five times the amount originally announced. This new figure is based on a “lot of variables,” including a third leak that was located in the pipeline, BP’s chief operating officer said. The spill now has the potential to become one of the worst in U.S. history, according to Coast Guard officials. [CNN]

Moonves Claims 3-D TV Hasn't 'Knocked Him Out' Yet

While it seems like there is nary a film on the schedule for 2011 that isn't being filmed in 3-D, it remains to be seen how the technology will affect TV. As manufacturers from Sony to Samsung are busy at work on 3-D TV sets for consumers, CBS president Les Moonves voiced doubts today about the conversion of television programs to 3-D, claiming he hasn’t been inspired by the visual quality of what he’s seen thus far.

"Does the experience get good enough on television to work? I'm not sure it's going to be economically viable for the near future," he said at a global conference in Beverly Hills, claiming that 3-D prototype conversions he has seen of old episodes of Star Trek “did not knock him out.”

Chase Carey, deputy chairman of News Corp, said at the same conference that while he imagines 3-D will become the standard for sports, movies and major events on television, he shares Moonves’ concerns about other kinds of 3-D TV, quipping, "There's a question of if people will come home at 7 o'clock at night and put on a pair of glasses to watch the evening news.”

"Enron" long on style but uninvolving (Reuters)

dancers=Reuters - From its opening moments -- when three giant blind mice make their way onstage tapping their canes -- it's clear that Lucy Pebble's "Enron" is not going to be a standard theatrical docudrama. This scathing depiction of one of history's most egregious examples of corporate malfeasance whips out every theatrical trick in the book to get its points across. But for all its undeniable inventiveness, the play is curiously uninvolving.

Obama Speaks Out Against 'Conservative' Judicial Activism

Barack Obama offered a warning today about the increasing prevalence of “conservative” judicial activism, as he believes courts aren’t showing proper deference to lawmakers’ decisions. The president said he won’t be choosing his second nominee to the Supreme Court specifically based on their views on judicial restraint, but it’s clear from his remarks that he believes courts are currently vested with too much power, and that this will affect his decision to a certain extent.

Talking with reporters on Air Force One today, Obama discussed judges who he believes have essentially ignored the democratic, political process and instead imposed judicial solutions.

"In the '60s and '70s, the feeling was, is that liberals were guilty of that kind of approach," Obama said. "What you're now seeing, I think, is a conservative jurisprudence that oftentimes makes the same error."

Obama of course has spoken out publicly about his disapproval of the Supreme Court’s January ruling, led by conservative members, that allowed corporations and unions to spend freely to influence elections.

Is someone pouring a little Kool-Aid into the iconic American Idol judges’ Coca-cola cups? Because given the river of praise flowing out of their mouths following some of the worst Idol performances in history, it almost felt like we were watching a completely different show.

Last night’s theme was one we’ve all been waiting for: Shania Twain, who brought her usual perkiness and change-the-radio-channelniness to arguably the largest concert stage in television history. And one after another, these young men and women who have been thrust into the spotlight perhaps too hastily proceeded to butcher Twain. Listen to what we’re saying here: They took a Shania Twain song… and made it worse. Bless the Gods who at least spared us an acoustic rendition of “Man… I Feel Like a Woman.”

And the judges? Ate. It. Up. Even Simon, the usual voice of apathetic reason, was way more generous than ever.

Do yourself a favor and watch the latest American SuicIdol video below to understand the surrealness of last night’s episode. This is hands down funnier and less painful than having to sit through the entire episode.

Who do you think is flying tonight? Our guess: Aaron Kelly.

Sleigh Bells Get Massive

Remember “Thug Love,” the awesome Bone Thugs N Harmony–Tupac song that uses the sound of a gun being cocked and shot as a beat? Sleigh Bells — the Brooklyn duo of Derek Miller, formerly of Florida hard-core band Poison the Well, and Alexis Krauss, who once sang in a teen-pop group called Rubyblue — just did it one better. The drums on the act’s new track “Tell 'Em” go so hard we have to assume they were sampled directly from futuristic U.S. military weapons training covertly recorded by the duo after they accidentally stumbled upon a top-secret army base while on tour in Arizona. “Tell 'Em” comes from Sleigh Bells' debut Treats, out May 11 via M.I.A.’s N.E.E.T. label. (Miller also worked on M.I.A.’s upcoming album.) This is the kind of stuff we hope is playing when the world ends.

Senator Carl Levin: Pissed About Being Upstaged by Goldman CEO?

Carl Levin's enthusiastic pummeling of Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein yesterday — which went on for at least three and a half hours — might have been driven by something more than a desire for justice for the populace, but related to an earlier incident that occurred on the Senate floor. Sayeth our new friend, Getty Images photographer Chip Somodevilla: "Blankfein, who's a very jovial guy, came in a little bit before the hearing, while Levin was talking, and the press just went bananas. The photographers were all going crazy. And Chairman Levin kind of paused, like to acknowledge that all of the attention had gone to Blankfein. He was kind of bothered, I think. I think it disturbed him that Blankfein was getting so much attention. These politicians, you know, they like to have the camera on them at all times."

Models IN; Celebrities OUT

Gisele, Anja, and Daria.

Except for Madonna for Dolce & Gabbana, all the major labels cast models for their fall 2010 campaigns. Here's a handy list of next season's major faces:

• Yves St. Laurent: Daria Werbowy
• Gucci: Raquel Zimmermann
• Chanel: Freja Beha Erichsen, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Brad Kroenig
• Fendi: Anja Rubik and Baptiste Giabiconi

• Louis Vuitton: Christy Turlington, Karen Elson, and Natalia Vodianova (though these names are rumored, not confirmed)
• Balenciaga: a cast of ten models, including Elson and Stella Tennant
• Roberto Cavalli: Gisele Bündchen
• Dior: Karlie Kloss
• Dolce & Gabanna: Madonna

So ... why so many models? Why NOW? It is that age-old trend question of how designers decide the same things at the same time. How do they all decide on M.C. Hammer pants one season and M.C. Hammer sweatpants the next? Karl Lagerfeld always has an appreciably simple and honest answer for these things:

“Why? Because I love them: They have the right look and class,” said the multitasking designer.

... Lagerfeld notes there are “not so many” celebrities around from which to choose. What’s more, their “overexposure in ‘people’ magazines also makes it that one may be a little tired of celebrities and the red carpet. I love models and there are great ones for the moment.

“A change was needed,” he continued. “Celebrities want to do their own lines, their fragrances, which sometimes works for a short time.”

Yes, maybe designers are sick of celebrities getting too big for their britches with all these fashion lines they "design." But Gisele elegantly conceded she doesn't really design her flip-flops line herself. Maybe the worse problem is that celebrity fashion in its most quintessential form — red-carpet attire — has gotten so bad. But models, on the other hand, aren't usually remembered for formalwear that causes Vogue editors to compare them to gross diner food.

City Councilman Hopes to Team Up With Comptroller for Boycott of Arizona

A protest in New York today.

The state legislature isn't the only one looking to punish Arizona into submission over its new illegal-immigrant law. Tomorrow, Washington Heights and Inwood city councilman Ydanis Rodriguez — an immigrant himself, having come to the United States from the Dominican Republic when he was 18 — will introduce a resolution condemning the law. But for more concrete results, Rodriguez is reaching out to leaders throughout the city to organize a boycott of Arizona, according to aides, and is trying to get Comptroller John Liu onboard with an effort to make the boycott enforceable for city-connected businesses. The Taiwanese-born Liu, who has called Arizona's law "scapegoating," signs off on all contracts the city makes with vendors, and Rodriguez's chief of staff suggests that one way for a boycott to work would be for Liu to refuse to give Arizona-based businesses his stamp of approval. We're still awaiting word back from Liu's office. Although Mayor Bloomberg has come out adamantly against the Arizona law, a spokesman wouldn't comment on whether Bloomberg would back a boycott until an actual bill had been produced.

Magnum Condoms in Rap Lyrics, a Cheat Sheet

There's a piece in today's Times examining the relationship between Magnum condoms and hip-hop. Like Cristal before it, an "unsolicited lift by hip-hop artists" (i.e., rappers name-checking Magnums in their lyrics) has boosted sales of the brand by 14 percent. Trojan, which owns Magnum, has decided to capitalize on all this free advertising by turning it into not-free advertising. The company has hired Ludacris as a spokesman for Magnum's first ever ad campaign, which will include print, online, and radio ads, as well as a contest soliciting the best Magnum-themed lyrics. But what are the best Magnum-themed lyrics that already exist?

Here are the kind words some rappers have had for their rubbers of choice. We find it hard to believe any of them would win a contest sponsored by a major corporation.

Ludacris, "Freaky Thangs"
: "Stop by the convenience store and pick up them rubbers, Magnum I hope"

Rick Ross, "Hustlin'" remix: "Hit the Dodge lot I must've copped six Magnums/ Marriott suite, I must've used six magnums"

The Notorious B.I.G, "I Love the Dough": "I'm poppin Magnums while Jigga bag somethin'" [Ed note: an astute commenter points out that this lyric most likely refers to magnums of champagne. It gets a little confusing when magnums can refer to condoms, alcohol or guns.]

Beanie Sigel, "I'm In": "I'm Ruthless, but nothin like Eazy/ I keep a pocket full of Magnums, believe me"

Obie Trice, "Hey Lady"
: "Baby, I'm extra large (huge) in magnitude/ And Magnums to lubrication that I use/ To choose which hole on a ho I abuse"

Obie Trice, "Shake That (remix)": "You know the name of the crew/You know the aim is to bang you/ In the mansion/ With a magnum"

Chris Brown, "Holla at Me"
: "Magazine covers, Magnem rubbers/ I mean Magnum, I don't fuck with stragglers"

Flo Rida, "Priceless": "Two Magnums in my hand, one for creeps, one for freaks"

Missy Elliott, "On & On": "You run for cover hide under your covers/ cause you gone need more protection than a Magnum rubber"

Lloyd Banks, "Twist It": "From the club to the telly on a late night/ Box of Magnums sippin' hen, finna get right"

Rick Ross, "The Boss": "Always wear plastic 'cause baby shit happens/ She leave the backseat just to freak in da magnum"

Young Jeezy, "Stay Strapped": "Nigga all on my dick, where's the Magnum wrapper?"

Kid Rock, "I'm a Dog": "See me ride across the country with my shotty ridin' shotgun/ Got slimmy's on my Jimmy with magnums rockin' platinum"

Lil Wayne, "Where Da Cash At": "If it's one thing that I cant stand, it's a baggy Magnum"

Mack 10, on Eminem's 'Business (remix)": "The Trojan gotta be a Magnum for me to fit it"

(Special thanks to these guys for knowing their condom lyrics.)

Washington Post Launches PostPolitics.com

We've been scratching our heads over the new online arm of the Washington Post, PostPolitics.com, which basically combines together a lot of the political coverage they already had (their "Fix" editor Chris Cillizza is running the thing). It's obviously meant to take on Politico, as the Times points out, and it certainly looks like that site at first glance. But with the exception of some blogger hires, the bulk of the coverage will come from the Post's previously existing (though recently beefed-up) staff. Is it a test to see whether people can enjoy a Politico-style news-delivery system without everything being so, well, Politico? [Official site]

Chelsea Clinton Put Her Father on a Wedding Diet

A few months ago, Chelsea Clinton told her dad that all he needed to do at her summer wedding was "walk her down the aisle and pay the bills." But that was before the Double Down sandwich came out, and now, he told Bob Schieffer on a panel today, she's upped the ante.

"You know, she told me the other day, she said, ‘Dad the only thing you gotta do is walk me down the aisle and you need to look good,’” Clinton said. “So I said ‘Well, what's your definition?’ And she said: ‘Oh, about 15 pounds.’"

To be fair, it is a summer wedding, and Bill is going strapless.

Fashion Week Chief Fern Mallis Leaves IMG

IMG senior VP Fern Mallis, who helms Fashion Week, is stepping down to start her own consulting company! She's calling it Fern Mallis LLC, and today is her last day at IMG. Mallis has been Fashion Week's planner since the event began eighteen years ago, when she was executive director of the CFDA. She said the move had been a long time coming. “When we were planning the move to Lincoln Center, it felt like closure, like the end of the cycle," she told WWD.

With IMG Fashion as her first client, Mallis won't abandon Fashion Week entirely. But with her stepping down from IMG as the veritable face of the event, Fashion Week moving to Lincoln Center, and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff signing on as Fashion Week director (a brand-new position), it sounds like we're in for a hugely different Fashion Week come September.

Actress Elaine Carroll started a series of Internet videos called "Very Mary Kate" in which she impersonates Mary-Kate Olsen. She puts new webisodes up every Monday and Thursday, and each gets hundreds of thousands of views on Vimeo. Her online persona extends to Twitter, where she writes things like "my favorite color is clear, my favorite flavor is bland, my favorite food is invisible pie." In the webisodes she says things like, "I wanna finish my education. It’s part of being a grown-up. I want to major in ponies." She doesn't give the Olsen — a CFDA member! — a whole lot of credit. “You can kind of compare Mary-Kate to Eeyore in ‘Winnie the Pooh,’” she told The Wall Street Journal. “She doesn’t really know what’s going on, does not have it together, trying so desperately to become an independent woman but just does not understand the world in which she lives.” What do you think? Comedy gold or jokes that are old?

Bill Condon Set To Direct Twilight In Bid To Make Gayest Movie Ever Made

GAY BREAKING DAWN

Twitter is a-chirping with the news that director Bill Condon has been plucked from teenage girl obscurity and handed perhaps the most difficult cinematic task ever: Directing the fourth installment of Twilight, Breaking Dawn.

Now, I’ve never read Breaking Dawn (though I am familiar with its ground-breaking incestuous baby spoiler), but I have seen Dreamgirls, Kinsey and Gods & Monsters. And let me assure you…

This movie will be so over the top amazing gay.

I might just have to see it now, if only to see the faces of every pre-pube collapse when Edward’s hand grazes Jacob’s 14th ab a few extra times “on accident.”

And for those of you doubting the veracity of my claim, 1. How dare you? and 2. Look at what happens when Bill Condon gets his hands on a good hair-do and some sparkle…

So, That Relationship Between The Porn Star And Ulitimate Fighting Champion Didn’t Work Out

Porn star Jenna Jameson and mixed martial artist Tito Ortiz have ended their relationship.  Instead of just telling you what happened, I will recreate for you what your side of the conversation would sound like if somebody called you on the phone to tell you about it.

Ring! Ring! Ring!

YOU:  Hello, thank you so much for calling my phone.

Muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice.

YOU:  What?!  They broke up?!  I didn’t even know they were together!  Or who that guy is.  Who is that guy?

Muffled phone voice.

YOU: Oh.  Figures.  Ha.  What happened, did she, like, get messed up on drugs like a porn star and then he got abusive like a guy who beats people senseless for –

Muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice, muffled phone voice.

YOU: Oh, that is what happened.  Wow.  Or the opposite of “wow” I guess.

Oh, you.  You are so witty on the telephone.  Anyway.  Yeah, that was you finding out that Tito is accusing Jenna of being hooked on OxyContin and freaking out when she was confronted about it, and Jenna is claiming that Tito picked her up over his head and threw her in a bathtub.

Let’s Twilight this up.  Who’s on Team Jenna and who’s on Team Tito?  And….. the results are in.  Nobody is on Team Tito.

Slashed, Washed-Out, and Curve-Hugging Denim by Democracy of Nevermind

Denim company Democracy of Nevermind was launched in fall 2008, the joint project of six South Korea–based designers trained in Seoul, Paris, London, Milan, and Florence. The design team is composed of various fashion-world veterans, touting previous positions at Balenciaga, Corso Como in Milan, Hugo Boss, and more. The FadMashion-featured designers were first tapped by Urban Outfitters to create a capsule collection of flannel shirts two years ago (check out one of their slouchy button-downs on slide twelve), which sold out in two weeks. The early success prompted them to launch a full denim collection in spring 2009, playing with light and mottled washes and curve-hugging seams. While Lindsay Lohan has been strutting around in their skinny jeans, the line is stocked at Scoop, Alter, Court, and Oak. The fall collection was also just scooped up by Barneys. Click ahead for a look at the spring and fall collections.

Gwyneth Paltrow Wants More Kids So Let’s Help Her Name Them

Gwyneth Paltrow wants to have more children!  What a joyous day!  She just recently told People Magazine:

“I would love to have another child at some point. I feel very, very lucky that I have two healthy, nice ones.”

As we all know, Gwyneth Paltrow named her first kid Apple.  And that is ridiculous.  But, I can sort of see how maybe the kid might like being named Apple.  I used to pretend I had all sorts of crazy names when I was a kid like Devon or Rabbi-Cop (this was not a reference to Robocop but instead a name based on what I was positive I would be when I grew up).

Anyway, let’s all help Gwyneth name her future baby by way of a game called The Gwyneth Paltrow Future Baby Name Generator Game.  Here’s how the game works.  You pick a word, any word.  Done! It’s such an easy game.  I’ll go first.  Chair.  “Oooooh, good one,” you all say.  Yes.  I’m very good at this game.  Chair Paltrow. I’ll put it up on the board.  Let’s do another one.  Parabola.  Even better.  I’ll keep going.

The Board

1. Chair Paltrow

2. Parabola Paltrow

3. Food Paltrow

4. Seemingly Paltrow

5. Therefore Paltrow

You can play at home too!  And you should.  Send in all your great great Gwyneth Paltrow Future Baby Name Generator Game names.

The Art Director Who Calls Drapey Blouses and Dangly Necklaces ‘Casual Menswear’

Art director Chenta Yu isn't afraid of a little androgyny. "I would describe my look as dandy. Definitely playing a little on the feminine side, but more like menswear." When we caught up with Chenta, he was wearing a necklace and blouse from Assembly New York with tailored Zara pants and Acne gladiator sandals. Chenta counts Dries Van Noten and Helmut Lang among his favorite designers, but he wasn't always so style-savvy. "I remember back in the day I wore straight-up T-shirts and jeans," he admitted. "Now I've gotten in touch with so many brands around here. And the vintage, that was hugely inspiring as well for me." See more of Chenta in our Video Look Book.

Courtney Love revisits her past on Letterman

Courtney Love appeared on "The Late Show" last night for the first time in six years. She blamed her long absence from the show to what she half-jokingly called "the Letterman years." Super Mario Bros. Crossover Is Beyond Amazing

Wow. Just, wow.

How many things do you come across in a given internet week that legitimately amaze you? For a joyless, internet-braindead blogger like myself, that number usually hovers between 0 and negative one (meaning, the internet literally removes something amazing from my life).

Sometimes, though, you come across something like Super Mario Bros. Crossover, a reprogrammed flash version of the entire original Super Mario Bros. NES game that you can play as Mario, Mega Man, Link from Zelda, Simon from Castlevania, or Samus from Metroid, complete with customized attributes, special moves, and music for each character.

Click the pic below to play, then yell “Holy crap, are you serious??” at your screen and wave goodbye to the rest of your workday / schoolday / life:

Review: `Dead to Rights' should have stayed buried (AP)

In this video game image released by Namco Bandai, Jack Slate and his dog, Shadow, fight evildoers in a scene from 'Dead to Rights: Retribution.' (AP Photo/Namco Bandai)AP - Sequels are such an ingrained part of the video-game marketplace that it feels curmudgeonly to complain about them. Yes, I'd love to see more originality, but when a game is as good as "Uncharted 2" or "BioShock 2," I'm not going to let that number in the title diminish my enjoyment.
