Last Night on Late Night: Courtney Love Describes 'The Letterman Years'

Last night Courtney Love told David Letterman about a period of her life that she refers to as "The Letterman Years": a six-year cocaine binge that began with her dancing on the host's desk and flashing him. Love says she's clean now, so Letterman was mostly concerned with brand management in his association with those years. On The Tonight Show Jessica Simpson revealed her own drug of choice, which really isn't as quirky as she seemed to think it is, given that the substance in question is fairly addictive. The Daily Show had a solution for the SEC's apparent porn addiction, and finally, Brendan Frasier demonstrated how he fights animals on a limited CGI budget (he was promoting his newest movie Furry Vengeance). Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Titans and Center of The Earth Get Sequels

Sam's on board for 'Titans 2.'

Take Two: Warner Bros. is moving ahead with two high-profile sequels, though both may be made without key players from the first films. The studio is looking at a desired spring 2012 arrival for a sequel to Clash of the Titans, with Sam Worthington returning to star. However, they have decided not to bring back director Louis Leterrier, though he will remain on board in an executive producer capacity. For the sequel to Journey to the Center of The Earth, the studio is looking to replace director Eric Brevig, which reportedly doesn’t sit well with star Brendan Fraser, who is threatening to ditch on the sequel. Though to us, that seems less like a threat and more like offering the studio a favor. [Deadline]

Howard's End: Bryce Dallas Howard will join the DreamWorks adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-seller The Help, playing the villainous role of Hilly Holbrook, the “beehive hairdo-wearing busybody who is cruel to the black maids and generally rubs everyone the wrong way.” Emma Stone and Viola Davis are attached to the film, which will be directed by Tate Taylor, who also wrote the screenplay. After her role as evil Victoria in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, when it comes to channeling Hilly, Howard shouldn’t need any help. [Deadline]

Ice Breaker: Ice Cube will star alongside Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster in Rampart, a police corruption drama written by James Ellroy and directed by Oren Moverman (The Messenger). Cube will play a homicide detective sent to investigate a shady cop (Harrelson). Harrelson, Foster and Moverman worked together on The Messenger, which means the trio's surely riotous inside jokes will sadly go right over his head. [Deadline]

Empire Grows
: Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, co-creators of Gossip Girl and The O.C., are expanding their recently-formed Fake Empire production company to incorporate the development of feature films. Paramount has given them a two-year first look producing deal, empowering them with “a lot of autonomy to buy projects with a hip youthful vibe.” Considering Schwartz’s Chuck is eternally near-death and Gossip Girl is running out of pairings that wouldn’t constitute incest, this is probably a welcome new avenue for the duo. [Deadline]

Burning Up: Paramount has picked up George Mahaffey’s spec script Heatseekers, which will be produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. No director is attached, and no details are yet available about the plot. And with that information alone, we’re going to predict this will be a Taylor Lautner espionage thriller, filmed in 3-D of course. [Variety]

OMJ: The Jonas Brothers have announced they will tour this summer with fellow Disney star (and Joe Jonas girlfriend) Demi Lovato. The tour begins July 27 in Dallas and will consist of more than 45 shows throughout North America, before closing in Raleigh on October 17. Tween nation shrugged upon hearing the news and then returned to tweeting about Justin Bieber. [MTV]

The Sin Crowd: Michael Seater (Life With Derek), Emily Meade (Twelve) and comedian Bo Burnham will star in Sin Bin, an indie coming-of-age comedy directed by Billy Federighi. The movie follows a “put-upon” high school student (Seater) who lets his friends use his van (called “The Sin Bin”) for their sexcapades. He also finds himself in a love triangle with a cute classmate (Meade) and a “villainous student liaison" (Burnham). Somehow, neither Michael Cera nor McLovin’ is in this. [HR]

Jokey's On Him: Paul Reubens will voice the smurf “Jokey” in the upcoming live-action/CGI 3-D film The Smurfs, directed by Raja Gosnell. He joins an eclectic group attached to the project, including Neil Patrick Harris, George Lopez, Quentin Tarantino, Katy Perry, Sofia Vergara and Michael Cera. If only all these folks were appearing in a giant episode of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, what fun that would be. [Deadline]

Common Ground: Common announced today he will be releasing a new album, tentatively titled The Believer. He is working with producers Kanye West and No I.D., both of whom he has worked with on previous albums. He’s aiming for a fall release, with a single by late summer or early fall, depending on how long it takes for him to get things just wright. [Billboard]

Spooky: Sara Paxton has nabbed the lead in The Innkeepers, a ghost horror film about "the last two clerks in a hundred-year-old haunted hotel" in the last days before it closes. And in a fun twist, the movie is being filmed in a real New England hotel “long suspected of actually being haunted," making this potentially the most authentic B movie horror flick ever. [HR]

The way the nightly TV news covered today’s Goldman Sachs hearings, you’d have thought they’d never heard a swear word before. Pretty much every single program took the time to gleefully harp on Carl Levin’s repeated use of the word that, as Chris Matthews put it, “rhymes with ditty.”

Schumer Pressures Facebook To Change Privacy Settings

Chuck Schumer is one of four senators who have decided to take on Facebook czar Mark Zuckerberg. Schumer - who co-signed a letter to the site’s founder with senators Michael Bennet, Mark Begich and Al Franken - has made this something of a pet issue, as he is demanding that Facebook make it easier for its more than 400 million users to protect their privacy, following a series of changes the site made last week designed to unlock further data about users’ behavior. He sent a letter Sunday to the FTC calling for regulators to create clearer privacy guidelines for Facebook and other internet social networks.

"The way to go is opt-in," Schumer said. "The default position should be that the information is not shared, not that the information is shared. The onus here should be on Facebook, not the user."

Though you might think Schumer wouldn’t know a poke from a profile, the senator is actually an active Facebook user, posting continual updates and having listed his personal faves (Carrie Underwood is a choice musician, and Family Guy a top show) and uploaded two Facebook albums with cutesy captions. Or he just has a really industrious social media guy on his staff who does it all for him.

Lady Gaga's Lollapalooza Set Reportedly To Cost $150,000

If you thought Lady Gaga would tolerate performing on an ordinary, earthly set when she headlines Lollapalooza this summer, you of course would be mistaken. The event’s founder Perry Farrell has reportedly commissioned a custom-made set for Gaga that will cost about $150,000. “We’re bringing a special stage for her, investing like a hundred grand to house what she’s doing,” he said. “That’s massive. Only Lady Gaga could step in and say 'I'm a headliner.'" Of course, this likely is only a fraction of the cost of whatever crystal/3-D/robotic object she’s sure to be wearing in her hair. Paterson Asks For Authority To Furlough 100,000 State Employees

On the heels of his public complaints about floundering in quicksand with no support from the legislature, Gov. Paterson is asking them for "extraordinary authority" to furlough 100,000 state workers, as he continues to attempt to combat the state’s $9 billion-plus deficit. After his talks with the public employees union to reduce workforce costs didn’t produce savings, the governor is specifically looking for "one day of furlough in each appropriation that we make from here on until we pass this budget," he said, adding for dramatic effect: “The crisis is worsening and we must take action.” [NYP]

Bret Michaels Faces Setback, Remains In Critical Condition

Though doctors are hopeful he’ll make a full recovery, Bret Michaels has suffered a setback in his condition, according to the latest update to his official website tonight. Hospitalized since Thursday following a brain hemorrhage, Michaels - who remains in critical but stable condition - is now suffering from hyponatremia, an abnormally low level of sodium in one’s body fluids, which can lead to seizures. “With further testing and rehabilitation, [doctors] are hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months,” the statement says. GOP Sen. Indicates He May Vote To End Financial Reform Filibuster

Though from the looks of it, maybe he just wants the filibustering to end because he's getting sleepy.

Though Senate Democrats were blocked for a second day in a row from beginning debate on the financial reform bill (Democrat Ben Nelson broke ranks again), there is potentially some good news on the horizon for the Dems. Ohio Republican Sen. George Voinovich may switch his vote to help Democrats move the Wall Street reform bill forward, he told CNN today.

The American people “want to see us get something done,” Voinovich said, adding he expects a “whole bunch” of other Republicans to eventually switch their votes as well.

Voinovich - who is not running for re-election - would not say when he’ll break, cryptically musing, “I have an idea of how much time it takes to cut a deal.”

Release of Kevin James' Zookeeper Pushed To Summer 2011

In a somewhat surprising move, Sony has bumped the release of the upcoming Kevin James comedy Zookeeper from its scheduled October 8, 2010 release date all the way to July 8, 2011. The studio, which acquired the distribution rights to the film from co-producer MGM last month, said the movie - in which James acts alongside a score of animated animals voiced by the likes of Adam Sandler and Cher - scored “some of the highest [test screening scores] they’ve ever seen.” Assessing that they had a potential summer blockbuster on their hands, they moved the film to next summer, squeezing it between the release of Transformers 3 (July 1) and the final Harry Potter movie (July 15). If a Kevin James movie can garner test scores this high despite a plethora of (presumably) chirpy, annoying animals, then this bodes very well for James' upcoming Ron Howard “cheating" flick with Vince Vaughn.

Goldman Sachs Stock Rises While Execs Endure Hearing

On a long, dark day for Goldman Sachs, one bright spot: the company’s stock was one of only three out of 79 financial companies that gained in the S&P 500 today, climbing 1.2 percent ($1.75). “It’s the opposite of buy on the rumor sell on the news,” a New York-based trader said, “Everyone knew Goldman would be taken to the woodshed, so it sold off yesterday in anticipation. Now some people are taking their trades off.” Before Lloyd and friends get too excited though, it should be noted that Goldman Sachs’ stock has fallen 16 percent since the April 16 suit came down. But hey, considering the fact these guys are still fielding questions from confused senators ten hours later, they’ll probably take whatever they can get today.

There is one catch, though; per the terms of his $45 million exit deal, O’Brien will not be able to disparage NBC or Jay Leno during the interview; but don’t worry - Kroft told the Times that O’Brien “flirts with the restrictions.” Another quirk: CBS is banned from showing O’Brien on television before Saturday, adding an unusual challenge to the network’s on air promotions for the program. “I think we’ll just show me talking to him and have to blank his face out,” Kroft said.

Flashy B'way 'Enron' recounts financial finagling (AP)

In this theater publicity image released by Jeffrey Richards Associates, Stephen Kunken perform with actors wearing raptor masks in a scene from Lucy Prebble's docudrama 'Enron,' now playing at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre in New York. Kunken portrays Enron CFO Andy Fastow. (AP Photo/Jeffrey Richards Associates, Joan Marcus)AP - The financial finagling is not as much fun as it should be in "Enron," a flashy yet lumbering docudrama that has arrived on Broadway trailing rave reviews from England, where maybe they take a much keener delight in all-American chicanery.

Kanye West Debuts New Music! On The Cleveland Show!

A few months back it was brought to attention that Kanye West would be guesting on Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show, playing Kenny West, an aspiring rapper that bullies young Cleveland Jr. Well, folks, the future is now: check out a clip of Kanye flowing, in animated form, from the show's May 2nd episode. It's a slightly choppier version of his usual style — plus he has to be mean to Cleveland Jr. in character, which is awkward — but other than that, it's pretty dope! Seriously, we like "It's Kenny, sipping Henny, ryhmes slicker than Teflon / I still been hot (as stew been hot?) I'm the black Zac Efron" better than any of the rhymes from 808s & Heartbreak.

Party Lines Slideshow: Kristin Chenoweth, Hugh Jackman, Liza and More at Promises, Promises's Opening Night

In Promises, Promises — the revival of the 1968 musical based on the 1960 Billy Wilder movie The Apartment — Sean Hayes plays an ambitious clerk at an insurance agency who curries favors with his higher-ups by letting them use his bachelor pad for rendezvous with their mistresses. At the show's opening night on Sunday, we asked Hayes's co-star Kristin Chenoweth if someone had ever used her apartment inappropriately, and how she, as an Oklahoma transplant to New York City, had handled it. "I had some house guests who left me with some fleas from their pet," she said, "and the Oklahoma way is just to buy all new furniture. Which is exactly what I did. But I was at Ikea." See more celebrity tales of bad house guests in our Party Lines slideshow.

Monogamy’s Rashida Jones and Chris Messina on Why Geriatric Public Sex Is Really Hot

In Murderball director Dana Shapiro’s intimate new drama, Monogamy, Woody Allen alum Chris Messina and Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones play a comfy Brooklyn couple whose relationship starts to disintegrate when Messina’s character becomes fixated on a hot blonde exhibitionist. The real-life buddies are in New York for the movie’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, and they checked in for a frank conference call about the film, their thoughts on monogamy, and the peculiar ins and outs of having sex in public.

So Rashida, did you really just escape the ash?
R: Can you believe it? I was stuck in Europe. I had to drive thirteen and a half hours from Paris to Madrid. It was pretty crazy. I just got out Monday night.
C: Of course, the whole time I was worried about you. And then I was even more worried that you wouldn’t make it to the screening.
R: You’re such a dick! [Laughs.]
C: Rashida and I are friends, but we really know each other through my girlfriend. We obviously don’t have any of the history that the couple in the movie does, so it was really kind of wild, weird, and cool to go down that road with her and get pretty dark.

Did that make playing a couple awkward?
C: Well, it’s always strange to kiss someone with 10, 20, 40 people around. And when you’re looking at someone who was, like, holding your baby in her arms in your house in California last week, you know, it’s odd. I was nervous about it, to be honest with you.
R: Were you really? I didn’t know that.
C: I think I’m always nervous about all of it, and then I was nervous because I wanted Rashida to have a good time. As you do with all these things, you’re taking a risk. I mean, Dana Shapiro, he’s terrific. He did this movie called Murderball and it was fantastic, but who knew if he could make a narrative? I’m super happy with the way it turned out, but it could have obviously gone another way.

So what are your respective thoughts on monogamy – the way of life, I mean, not the movie?
C: Well I have two boys and a girlfriend, so I obviously believe in it, but it’s still hard! I don’t know how natural it is, at least for me — for a lot of men I know. I would love to close my eyes and see myself with my girlfriend when we’re 99 years old and I have a pipe and she’s knitting a sweater, and I hope that’s the way it goes. I think it’s a challenge every day.
R: I agree – I don’t think it’s necessarily a natural state of being for animals such as human beings, but I do think the rewards of sticking with it are pretty fantastic. That being said, I really don’t think there’s a lot of that going on right now. There’s a lot of fear and running and bullshit irresponsible behavior. I think dudes are acting out right now in a huge way. Guys are freaking out. I think as a culture we’re going to have a really hard time with it.

What about having sex in public? There’s a lot of that in the movie, too.
R: I totally get how people get off on it. It makes perfect sense to me. If that’s the thing that works for you, do your thing. Whatever gets you to the mainland.
C: Yeah! I’m down with that answer. I mean, I’ve liked having sex in bathrooms when there were people knocking on the door … that was fun. But I don’t know – these characters take it to a place that I never have. I have a tough time showing public affection.
R: I think it’s weird, right? It’s one thing to make out in public, but to actually have sex in public? That’s tough to do. I was just in Naples and I saw two young people making out on a corner. It was pretty awesome. But they were young.
C: Young – that might be the answer right there. Or maybe it’s old people, too. Like maybe if you saw an 80-year-old couple making out you’d be like, "That’s incredible!"
R: That’d be kind of cool, actually.
C: If you saw two, like, 80-year-olds, fucking on the corner of Bleecker Street?

I really have no idea how I’d respond to that.
R: You would love it! Oh my God. You would love it.
C: Yeah, you’d totally take your iPhone and take a video of it. And it’d be on YouTube the next day. It’d be like, "Hey, how do I get to that site again?" "Google 80-year-olds fucking on Bleecker." "Oh, there it is."

Washington Post Homepage Gets Its Black Icons Mixed Up

This afternoon, one of our many sharp-eyed readers caught what we're going to go ahead and call the very greatest news-website screen grab ever (just edging out Hillary-as-dwarf). For a brief period, a homepage link to an article about President Obama's speech in Iowa was paired with a photo of Malcolm X. This was almost certainly a freak coincidence — another story in the featured-article slideshow box was about the release of Malcolm X's killer from prison. The glitch was fixed soon after, with each photo back with the headlines for which they were intended. But what a happy coincidence that of all the photos that could be mistakenly plopped on top of all the headlines in the world, it was these two that found each other today.

Not Everyone Is Against the Brooklyn Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart hasn't confirmed it will open a store in Jamaica Bay, Brooklyn, in a space at the planned Gateway II shopping center. But despite labor unions twice blocking the retailer's attempts to open in Staten Island and Queens, the City Council has already approved the retailer's Brooklyn plans. So Wal-Mart can forge ahead as soon as they sign a lease, which a Wal-Mart spokeswoman confirms they haven't done. As it goes with Wal-Mart, controversy is brewing. Labor unions and local politicians have pledged to fight Wal-Mart's descent on the neighborhood. But some residents, who drive out of their way to shop at suburban Wal-Marts, want Wal-Mart.

“People are very happy about it,” said Marie Purnell, former president of the Spring Creek Towers Tenants Association, which is across the street from the Walmart. “It was all the talk at last night’s Democratic Club meeting.”

Councilman Charles Barron has pledged a passionate fight against the retailer's purported Brooklyn plans, noting, “No one exploits workers more than Wal-Mart. To exploit workers the way they do is unconscionable.” Again, residents seem unfazed.

“A few people mentioned that there would be a possibility of jobs here if Walmart came. The fact that they are non-union didn’t even come into the conversation,” said Purnell. “People are desperate for jobs and what is not now on their top priority list is whether something is union or not.”

The Brooklyn Paper has dubbed the battle "Warmart," which sounds like an armpit fungus, but okay.

Lloyd Blankfein Is In the House!

This isn't what it looks like. He may be guilty of a lot of things, but not that.

Thank GOD. (Literally!) After a marathon session that has continued without pause since 10 a.m., the Goldman Sachs CEO is finally reading his carefully crafted opening statement with the nasally, giddy bravado of a high-school debate-team champ.

What has he been doing in the green room this whole time? You tell us:

(A) Knitting
(B) Stress eating
(C) Watching Between Two Ferns on his iPhone.

Will the committee even have any juice left for the Big Guy? Probably not. Probably he arranged it that way.

Update: Oh yes, there is still fire left in Carl Levin's loins.

Carl Levin: Do you think that they know when you sell them something that you think that that something is a piece of crap?
Lloyd: I don't know who "they" is.
And they're off! They are screaming at each other so fast and so intensely that it's like there is no one else left in the room. Only Carl. Only Lloyd.

Levin: YOU ARE BETTING AGAINST PRODUCTS THAT YOU ARE SELLING AND YOU ARE NOT BOTHERED!
Blankfein: Fine you're right I'm not bothered.
5:48: John McCain is asking why Goldman thought they needed the TARP money. Lloyd patiently explains there was a panic, the government required the top financial institutions to take some extra cash, who John Paulson is, what ACA is, the last two years of history, basically, up until the present moment. Can someone please escort this poor sad old man out of here? Give him a free copy of Too Big Too Fail.
5:49: McCain: "I don't think the community banks are doing very well, do you?" Lloyd: "Uhhhh, well, no, there is a recession..." *shuffles papers* McCain: And people are struggling...and the plovers! The plovers are also struggling! "And yet Goldman is doing pretty well. What do you make of that, Mr. Blankfein?" Oh god this is painful.
5:57: John McCain, recent presidential candidate, does not know how to pronounce "Abacus." Has Goldman ever done anything good ever to help people, he asks?
Lloyd runs through the programs GS has developed to help small businesses etc: “Are any of these things enough? Not for the suffering existing in the world, but we are trying to do our part.”
6:10: Kaufman: I'm not going to ask 20 times [NB: Thank you] but don't you think that [taking a short position on your own CDO] has the appearance of a conflict? Lloyd: Dunno. He did ask nicely. Kaufman: But everyone on Wall Street is supposed to be really smart! Lloyd denies smartness. Kaufman finishes with this: "This was the worst thing to happen to this economy since the Great Depression. Millions of people are out of work. Millions of people are really hurting. And I think what bothers people the most is not the bailouts. Although those do bother people. It's not the bonuses. Although those does bother people—I mean CEOs made billions of dollars. But it's nottthat. It's that there's only one sector of our economy, that has billions of dollars to give away in bonuses. The idea that Wall Street came out of this just fine, thank you. And people didn't think that it was just luck. They think you gamed people. That's basically the point I was making." Fair enough, that is what people think.
6:26: Lloyd vows to "look deeply" within himself.
With that, we're out. Tivoing this for later.

State Senator Kevin Parker Still Has a Lot of Trouble Remaining Calm

Brooklyn's Kevin Parker has punched a traffic agent, smashed a photographer's camera, allegedly pushed an aide, and most recently gotten into an expletive-laden confrontation with his colleagues over Hiram Monserrate. So it's not shocking that today, after Parker objected to the way a nominee to the Power Authority was being addressed by angrily pounding the table, Democrat Carl Kruger had to threaten to ask him to leave the room. To this, Parker reportedly responded, "Well, you better bring people." In his defense, Parker says that, from "time to time, we're all prone to hyperbole." [Daily Politics/NYDN]

OPEN THREAD: What’s The Longest You’ve Ever Held On To A Neflix Movie?

I once saw a History Channel special on World War I, Googled WWI movies, Neflixed All Quiet On The Western Front, and shipped it back after three weeks, knowing I couldn’t kid myself into believing I was going to watch it any longer. I sat on Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai for four weeks, shockingly never finding myself in the mood for a 4-hour subtitled film, and finally shipped it back free of wannabe-film-connoisseur guilt when I realized my roommate already owned it.

Being an extremely OCD individual when it comes to lists and queues and whatnot, I’ve been pretty responsible with my Netflix, and four weeks stood as my record for holding on to a movie, until this week, when a new champion was crowned:

Good ol’ Precious. Based on the novel “Never In The Mood To Watch This” by LotsOfRapepphire. My quest to be a dutiful pop culture blogger and see all 10 Oscar Best Picture nominees came to a screeching halt when this fun-sucker showed up in the mail, and it’s been on my kitchen table collecting post-Oscar dust for 5 weeks with no end in sight. Your streak’s in jeopardy, Cal Ripken Jr: The Movie.

Our question for today — What’s the longest you’ve ever held on to a Netflix movie? Leave your stories of virtuous intentions and failed film nerdery in the comments.

NATALIE PORTMAN’S BOYFRIEND IS HOT AS SH*T: A Guide

An item in today’s Page Six read as follows:

Natalie Portman will show her support for her new squeeze, New York City Ballet principal dancer Benjamin Millepied, by gracing the company’s spring gala with her presence Thursday. Sources say he and Portman are “very much in love.”

Hmm… a ballet dancer, eh Natalie?

You know, considering you could just about land any man on the planet, we’re a little surprised. I mean, we would have thought for sure you would go for a guy with a killer body, masculine charisma, good face, and oh my god what is happening humina humina humina no:

For those men out there wondering why THEY are not the ones wining and wining Natalie Portman, allow this “Natalie Portman’s Boyfriend Is Hot As Sh*t: A Guide” to explain why.

For starters, Benjamin Millepied is a principal dancer at New York City Ballet and, according to his Wikipedia page, “a ballet choreographer of international reputation.”

He also looks like this:

Do you look like this? Probably not.

Benjamin was born in France and began dancing at the age of 8 with his Mother.

He also has the abs of a shark. Do you have shark abs?

No, if you’re lucky, you have a ab. This is why Natalie Portman is not avoiding the lens of paparazzi while being photographed with you on the street:

Oh, one more thing: DO RAINBOWS BURST FORTH FROM YOUR PERFECTLY CARVED MARBLE CHEST?

Unlikely.

Can you look like someones hot widowed neighbor in 1978 with little to no effort?

No.

Can you pick your Mom up over your head for Mother’s Day?

Your Mother hasn’t talked to you in years.

Can you turn an average employee of the passport authority into stone with your crystal clear gaze?

Can you redefine the meaning of masculinity?

Can you make ghosts cry?

Can you do the Elaine?

Can you kiss Natalie Portman without her calling the police?

This is why you’re not dating Natalie Portman.

Emanuel Ungaro Has Resigned Itself to Reopening Underneath the Plaza Hotel

Did you hear about the opening of the Emanuel Ungaro boutique over the weekend? Of course you didn't! Because the store, which was recently forced to move out of its pricey Madison Avenue location, reopened in the mall underneath the Plaza Hotel — shopping quarters few people seem to shop in or even know exist. The Plaza was reportedly keen on recruiting a high-fashion label to open a shop in the space to add value to the Plaza mall real estate as a whole, and to recruit more attractive clients. As such, presumably, a press release announcing the opening of the Ungaro store also heralds the arrival of another vendor called Connor, "an artisanal stationer." So if you're the kind of person who often finds him or herself with only an hour or so to acquire both a heart-shaped glitter nipple pastie and family coat of arms (Jill Zarin, cough cough), the shops at the Plaza are just what you need.

The Next Big Viral Obama Video

Let me first say that there is absolutely nothing funny about the recent West Virginia mine disaster.  Twenty Nine men, all of whom had friends and family who loved them, lost their lives.  Every day, they descended into a mine knowing that a certain level of danger was inherent in their work, yet, by all accounts, they were happy to do it.  They performed one of the few jobs left in America that actually produces something.  They dug into the earth and came back up with the very thing that allowed the rest of us to live our lives with comfort.  Our lights come on with the simple flick of a switch, but only because men and women like these have the skill and fortitude to, day after day, climb into the bowels of earth and tunnel further and further away from safety.  Now they are gone.  And there is nothing funny about that.

However.

There was this thing that happened during the memorial service.  As a man came to the podium to sing the national anthem, the TV cameras focused not on him, but instead, on Barack Obama who was singing along.  And it looked like this:

Very good, Mr. President.  You made it look like you were Mighty Mouse singing the national anthem.  You are the new Andy Kaufman.

Armani’s Hotel Opened in Dubai’s Under-Construction (But Tallest!) Skyscraper

Dubai's economy may be in the dumps, along with an unknown number of floors in its largest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, which is still under construction. But finally today, Giorgio Armani made it to Dubai — volcanic Icelandic ash be damned! — to open his first branded hotel in the building. The Armani hotel occupies the first through eighth floors of the building — only to stop for 30 floors before continuing on the 38th and 39th floor. Prices to stay at the hotel, which includes a bunch of restaurants, a pool, and the requisite overpriced spa, start at more than $750 a night. But if you want to spend about $2,200 a night, the Armani Hotel Dubai offers that pleasure too.

Now that looks like a building with some good air conditioning.Photo: KARIM SAHIB/AFP/Getty Images

It is unclear whether that rate is adjusted for essentially staying in a construction site. While the Armani Hotel's quarters are complete, with glossy chestnut finishings and tasteful purple cushions, the rest of the building surrounding the hotel is very much a construction site. Reuters writes that the building "rises more than 160 stories, though the exact number of habitable floors is not known." Weird. Also putting a thorn in the hotel's fine side:

Armani's hotel will soon have more competition. Rival Italian fashion house Gianni Versace SpA plans to open its own luxury hotel in Dubai later this year. Its claim to fame: an artificially cooled beach designed to keep sunbathing guests from getting too uncomfortable in the Gulf's scorching summer heat.

Touché, Versace. But will that label's hotel look like a disco ball up close? Some travelers have priorities.

Murdoch to Sulzberger: Get a Life

After Wall Street Journal editor Robert Thomson insisted his designers Photoshop an image of New York Times owner Arthur Sulzberger onto a collage of men with so-called feminine faces and then seemingly lied about it to Sulzberger's face (or at least to a reporter), the Observer's John Koblin asked Rupert Murdoch about it. What did the Journal owner think of Sulzberger's reaction to the whole thing? "He should get a life," that's what he thinks. Though the theme of yesterday's evening party at Gotham Hall was competition, with the Times in particular, Murdoch did concede one thing: “You can’t kill the New York Times,” he said. “It’ll be here forever.”

Jesse James’ Dad: Jesse James Is A Nazi…Still…And Again

Usually, it’s not fair to call someone a Nazi.  People use the word “Nazi” too much.   So much, in fact, that I think people even complain about other people using the word “Nazi” too much, too much.  But, Jesse James… It just keeps getting more okay for people to call him a Nazi.  From TMZ:

Jesse James’ father [Larry James] says he wasn’t shocked by the infamous photo of Jesse in Nazi garb — because he claims Jesse had a deep fascination with Hitler’s evil war machine that stems back to his childhood [...] Larry claims he gave Jesse information about the Neo-Nazi movement “as a joke” — but soon noticed that Jesse, “liked their war machine, he liked their uniforms, he liked their guns, he liked everything about them.

Obviously, nobody likes Jesse James.  He is awful.  But after reading this, I think his dad might be worse.  I like to imagine that even if I had a son who was a Nazi, I still wouldn’t throw him under the bus.  I mean, first of all, I’d be like, “Your Jewy grandparents are going to be very upset about this.”  But after that stern talking-to, I would be there to protect him.  Even after he married a movie star and then cheated on her with an even grosser tattooed Nazi than himself, he would remain my son.  Despite our differences, his pain would be my pain.  Jesse James’ father does not feel this way.  Because of that, I have the following to say to Larry James:  You, sir, are the Nazi.

Na, just kidding.  Go punch your son in the face.  He’s a d**k.  A big Nazi D**k.

SNL’s Greatest Moments: Top Ten Cast Member Crack Ups

Saturday Night Live creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels does not look fondly upon cast members breaking character and succumbing to uncontrollable fits of laughter during sketches. While this behavior, which is known as “corpsing” in theatrical circles, is generally not rewarded by Michaels, there is no denying that some of the most indelible moments in the show’s history have come when performers have cracked themselves and their fellow cast members up during the middle of a sketch. In fact, one of those moments occurred just this past weekend when featured player Bill Hader couldn’t stop giggling while portraying a character called Stefon during Weekend Update.

So, as a means of honoring these rare moments of spontaneous levity on the program, we’ve put together the following Top Ten list of moments when cast members lost their composure and burst into laughter during a sketch. Enjoy!

10. “Hot Tub Lovers” with Will Ferrell, Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore

“Does anyone care for spiced lamb shanks?” Mere seconds into this recurring sketch that starred Will Ferrell and Rachel Dratch as pretentiously libidinous professors at a liberal arts college, notorious SNL corpser Jimmy Fallon begins losing it. The cast does their best to keep the sketch together, but when Dratch begins feeding Ferrell lamb meat while soaking in the hot tub around the three minute mark, the bit goes off the rails.

9. “More Cowbell” starring Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, Chris Parnell and Christopher Walken

If one were to judge the entire roster of Saturday Night Live cast members solely on their ability to keep a straight face in a sketch, Jimmy Fallon would be the worst featured player in the show’s history by a country mile. About 3:45 into this legendary sketch, Fallon begins cracking up while delivering a line about Will Ferrell’s potbellied cowbell antics, causing a chain reaction of giggles that almost tanked the bit.

8. “Casino – The American Indian Version” starring Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider and Harvey Keitel

It’s always a joy when actors best known for their serious, dramatic chops show up to Studio 8H to guest host. In this example, renowned Serious Actor Harvey Keitel finds it nearly impossible to make his way through a Casino parody in which he’s dressed up as an American Indian. Good thing for him that this crackup happened during dress rehearsals and not on the live show.

7. “Extremely Stupid” starring Gilda Radner and Candice Bergen

The madcap schedule in which sketches on SNL are written and (barely) rehearsed has resulted in many a fine actor tripping over a line. In this case, Candice Bergen mistakenly calls Gilda Radner’s character the wrong name, which causes her to begin laughing uncontrollably for the duration of the entire sketch. Ever the pro, Radner manages to keep it together … for the most part.

6. “Aquarium Guys” with Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon

Fact: At least two people found SNL’s Aquarium Guys (“We got [INSERT POP CULTURE REFERENCE] over here!”) to be hilarious.
Fact: Sadly, those two people were Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz.

5. “Grandma” starring Chris Farley, Adam Sandler and Michael Keaton

As funny as it is to see Michael Keaton wearing a leopard-print banana hammock/codpiece, it was Chris Farley’s wig-related wardrobe malfunction that caused Adam Sandler to crack up during the middle of this skit. Bonus points for being able to hear Farley’s singular giggle at the 0:48 mark of this priceless early nineties video.

4. “Stefon” starring Bill Hader

The most recent example of a Saturday Night Live cast member breaking character due to a giggle fit came during this past weekend’s Weekend Update segment. W.U. host Seth Meyers brought in the show’s anxious city correspondent, Stefon (as played by Bill Hader), to discuss some of New York City’s finer tourist attractions. Hader is normally an unflappable performer, but midway through the bit, he hilariously loses his composure while sniffing his hands and explaining to Midwesterners about the allure of Teddy Graham people and high-waisted midgets.

3. “Jeffrey’s” starring Sean Hayes, Jimmy Fallon and Will Ferrell

As employees at a snobby, high-end retail store, Jimmy Fallon and guest star Sean Hayes had a difficult time keeping a straight face from the moment that the sketch began. But when Will Ferrell rolled out on a Rascal scooter and whipped out the world’s tiniest cellphone at this sketch’s 4:10 mark, everyone in the building experienced a simultaneous laugh attack.

2. “Van Down By The River” starring Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney David Spade and Christina Appelgate

Inspirational speaker Matt Foley’s first appearance on Saturday Night Live was, clearly, one for the ages. As the sketch progresses, you can watch Chris Farley continuously amp his performance up to rarely seen comedic heights in an attempt to get David Spade and Christina Appelgate to laugh. Obviously, it worked.

1. “Debbie Downer” starring Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon, Horatio Sanz, Kenan Thompson, Fred Armisen, Amy Poehler and Lindsay Lohan

Putting Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz all in the same skit at the same time resulted in the Perfect Storm of corpsing. For whatever reason, when Kenan Thompson introduces himself to a vacationing family as a waiter named “Billiam” about 15 seconds into the sketch, Dratch and Fallon begin shooting each other glances as they struggle to maintain their composure. The next six minutes are some of the sloppiest, yet most hilarious, minutes in the program’s 35 year history, topped off by Debbie Downer’s admission that she cannot have children. Fertility issues aren’t normally recognized as being fertile comedic ground, but on the night of May 1, 2004, nothing could’ve been more hilarious.

Gisele Flaunts Her Flat Stomach on Another Cover

Not long after Gisele gave birth, she posed for the cover of American Vogue, showing off her perfectly trim waist in skintight clothing. Inside the magazine, she posed with her naked baby and her own stomach bared, though the white lighting somewhat obscured her six-pack. Now she's on the cover of the May issue of Korean Vogue, taut abs clearly lit, and skirt tugged down as though to prove she isn't hiding a pooch. She's so real! [Design Scene]

E-MAIL THIS TO YOUR MOM: Vincent Van OMG

Our favorite hospital in the entire world with the most Anglo name in history, St. Tiggywinkles, has once again outdone themselves in the “here is my heart, slice it, eat it, just do away with it because I can no longer go on living” department. Today, it’s this: They rescued an eight week old badger with only one ear and named him Vincent.

Officials have no idea how he was injured… and neither does Vincent, as this picture shows:

(An e-mail to your Mother awaits ahead.)

Am I the last person on the planet to realize the endless heart-clutching potential of handy-capable badgers? Even his deadly claws are :’(

Someone photoshop a beret over this bandage immediately and give him back his dignity…

Or, at the very least, Justin Bieber hair.

Alia Ahmed-Yahia Will Brave the Subway in Spiked, Five-Inch Louboutins

Alia Ahmed-Yahia in her office.

After editorial stints at Vanity Fair and Elle, Alia Ahmed-Yahia was tapped to be the fashion director of LOFT in late 2008. Since then, she's been busy revamping the brand, bringing in a cache of stylists to work with the collections and expanding LOFT's social-media reach. (She's also courting the celebrity set: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Alexa Chung, Mena Suvari, and Amanda Hearst all checked out the brand's fall preview this month.) She says, "It's a 360 degree job" that includes snapping street-style pictures for concept boards, styling the collections, and conceptualizing window displays. This spring, she helped launch LOFT's new Tumblr site (featuring guest blogger Jessica Schroeder of What I Wore), as well as coordinating the brand's blog, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. We chatted with the West Village local about her shoe addiction, styling, and DIY fashion.

What's the idea behind LOFT's new Style Studio?
We brought in three stylists — Kate Young, Tina Chai, and Joanna Blades — to arrange looks from the fall 2010 collection. It was about bringing in a diverse group of women to the table to mix the pieces in different ways. Every woman has style; some are just more fashion-confident than others.

Who are your favorite designers?
Well, I'm never mad at Balenciaga. I love YSL, especially the accessories, and my guilty pleasure is Azzedine Alaïa shoes. My friends say I have two speeds: running shoes or five-inch heels.

What's the first designer item you bought?
It was a Prada sweater, and I wore it to death. I must have gotten the price down to a penny a day. Then I passed it on to my little sister.

Where do you like to shop in New York?
I'm a fashion nomad. I shop at a lot of flea markets, like the Chelsea flea. I love Resurrection. And New World Order is a very cool store in the East Village. The guy who started it used to live in Paris, and he has these French style scouts.

How would you describe your personal style?
Colorful, creative, and experimental. I'm very DIY. I've been known to spray paint a watch or cut the sleeves off a vintage fur coat and wear them as leg warmers. I have a typically tiny New York closet, and some of my best style inspiration comes from having to hang things on the same hanger to save space — it's a forced strategy.

What trends are you appreciating right now?
I've gotten really into slim cargos. I also like mixing patterns, like classic stripes with a leopard-fur vest.

Any trends you're ready to see retired?
Ditzy florals and prairie skirts. I can't handle that — it's too literal.

What's one item you're saving up to buy?
I run past the Louboutin store every day, and there's always a new pair of shoes that I covet. There's this amazing pair that has spikes all over the heel. They're definitely dinner shoes, but I would probably wear them on the subway. When I like something, I wear it to death, then I never want to see it again. Luckily, I'm the oldest of seven kids, so I have a lot of siblings to pass things on to.

What should every woman have in her closet?
I think the feminine cropped jacket is the new cardigan. I love the look of a structured shape over a soft flowing dress.

What's something you never leave the house without?
My BlackBerry is my best friend. I'm always taking pictures of people on the street, and I e-mail ideas to myself a lot.

Erin Kaplan May Regret Some Things She’s Said to Olivia Palermo

Elle publicist Erin Kaplan, who really is Elle's publicist, answered some fan questions today on Elle.com to hype tonight's season premiere of The City. Though we thought her dealings with Olivia on the last season of the show were awesome, she may feel differently. "Hindsight is always 20/20 and the majority of the time I wish I could go back and change what I said or at least phrase it a bit differently," she said, speaking generally. NO! Olivia needs ... tough love. And eye rolls. Lots of eye rolls. [Elle]

Vera Wang Looks Forward to Designing Wedding Dresses Out of the $20,000 Range

Last night at the Parson's Annual Fashion Benefit, Vera Wang told us she hasn't started designing her David's Bridal line yet. "It’s been in the works a very, very, very long time. Part of the joy is that, with their power as retailers, I can create outside of the $20,000 range," she said. "I think it’s time to get more than 10,000 women a year, you know? Why should price dictate if you have great taste? I don’t believe in that."

Wang, who designs a diffusion line for Kohl's, isn't sure how exactly the David's Bridal line will differ from her main bridal line. "But I had an experimental period with Kohl’s. I’m fairly good at adapting. But it’s great. It’s very freeing," she added. "At the upper end, I always have to keep the ball rolling and it’s pretty heavy-duty lifting. David’s Bridal is going to be play. But the audience is very full. So all of that development, twenty years of my life — my design team, technical knowledge — I can just take advantage of it now."

Aside from the many design students at the benefit last night, Jason Wu also attended. He recalled sewing his first dress for his mother. "When I was 10 and I got my first sewing machine, I scrounged up some drapes," he told us. His mom, who bought him his first sewing machine, never wore it. "I think it ended up falling apart." Patricia Field had no trouble recalling her first clothing design. "I designed leggings," she said. "I invented leggings."

Olivia Munn PETA Ad Demands Release Of Circus Elephants So They Can Get Slaughtered In The Wild

Olivia Munn from Attack of the Show and Iron Man 2 is currently posing naked in a new PETA ad demanding the release of circus elephants:

Not to be a wet blanket draped over your naked body, Olivia, but have you seen what happens to “free” elephants in Planet Earth? In the Deserts episode, elephants have to walk literally hundreds of miles to find food or water, often dying of dehydration on the way, every single day of their lives. In the Mammals episode of Life, elephants make an annual exodus of hundreds of miles to a flooded plain to find water, but once they get there, their babies often get stuck in the mud and drown. And for good measure, elephants also sometimes get slaughtered by lions.

My point is, while I certainly don’t doubt that elephants in circuses are often mistreated and live unnatural lives, and that is legitimately sad, the regular lives of free elephants also TOTALLY F***ING SUCK. Like, really really hard. Like, getting slaughtered by lions hard, which is about as hard as a thing can suck.

Most elephants don’t have the capacity to speak or reason, but given the choice, I’d imagine most would take being occasionally shocked over watching their babies drown then getting jumped by a gang of lions. Or at the very least, the decision is close enough that I personally wouldn’t take my clothes off demanding that elephants be forced to choose the latter. Or were the lions behind this ad?
