"Aamir set record with 3 Idiots and someone has to break it" - Sajid Khan

Sajid Khan By now, the famed confidence of Sajid Khan is known across the industry. In fact as the release date of Housefull comes closer; there is an increased sense of confidence in his tone. No nervous pangs here, no butterflies in the stomach, no 'oh I am so excited that I haven't slept for 4 days' quotes are coming from him. Instead, he is breathing and eating Housefull even as expectations have soared by many multitudes. As the film is close to 100 hours away from its release, Sajid Khan converses with Joginder Tuteja on record breaking business that Housefull is expected to create, the coming together of a huge cast and his lack of fear when comes to critics amongst other topics. Housefull will be the first real biggie that would arrive after 3 Idiots. There was My Name Is Khan and Veer which were solo starrers but this one is a quintessential masala multistarrer. You must be aware about huge expectations that people would have from the film. Doesn't it become scary as well? After all eyes would be on the film to succeed. Quite honestly I would be disappointed if Housefull does not do record breaking business. Heyy Babyy released in 2007 and Housefull is arriving in 2010. In 3 years, business has grown tremendously. I am extremely confident about the film because I know that the biggest hero I have here is the screenplay. This is a kind of movie that people would enjoy watching 2-3 times. For any blockbuster, it is a bare minimum requirement to have repeat value. This is what I kept in mind when I wrote Housefull with three other writers. 3 Idiots wouldn't have been such a huge blockbuster if people wouldn't have seen it 2-3 times. This is a kind of movie that people would enjoy watching 2-3 times Talking about 3 Idiots, there would be obvious comparisons with the film, mainly from box office standpoint, when Housefull opens this Friday. 3 Idiots had broken all records and enjoyed an astonishing journey. Do you think that in 2010, whether Housefull or any other film for that matter would be able to break the record created by 3 Idiots? Let me tell you something. I have a lot of friends from the film industry and we indulge into a lot of bets around the box office prospects of a film. Of course these are token bets as we exchange, Blue Ray discs etc. But then, it's fun. Sajid (Nadiadwala), Riteish and I are trade pundits and when it came to 3 Idiots, we all knew that it would be huge. However, none of us could have ever fathomed that it would be this huge. I guess somewhere even the makers didn't know expect such outcome. When a film connects at such a level, even you get surprised. Sajid Khan So you were really surprised with the way 3 Idiots performed? Pleasantly surprised actually and it's a good thing that this happened because it has shown people the way. I am sure 99% people were very happy with it because once money starts coming into films, the rolling begins. It gives a breathing space to other big films in line. It tells people that this kind of business is possible. Ok, so my film is not 3 Idiots but then it has lots of comedy, has its heart at the right place, is seeing a correct release and boasts of tremendous publicity. I am sure the film will see a great box office response. After all records are meant to be broken. Aamir set the record with 3 Idiots and someone has to break it. So why shouldn't I aim high? Aamir set the record with 3 Idiots and someone has to break it. So why shouldn't I aim high? Well, you have actually aimed quite high in case of Housefull. Your film after all boasts of a stunning presence of hot bods like Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta and Jiah Khan. Still Sajid, one wonders if it became a little too much to handle for you as well. I believe in laying down cards at the very beginning itself. I tell my actors that you either take it or leave it. I don't play favourites with anybody. If I do so, I will end up cheating myself and the film. In case of Housefull, everybody's role has been cleverly balanced. Also, I believe in joint narration. So we had Akshay, Ritiesh, Arjun, Deepika, Lara, Jiah, Boman, Randhir, Lilette and Chunky - everyone sitting together and doing a joint reading. You actually had a dozen odd actors coming together for a narration? (Smiles) Even Sajid (Nadiadwala) had a similar expression on his face when I shared this idea of mine. He couldn't believe it actually when I pulled it off. Something like this can perhaps happen for a small budget film but when it comes to big budget commercial films, this doesn't quite happen. However, we had a professional setup where we rehearsed for hours in my room. Also, I insist that to get things right onscreen, there should be cordial relationship off screen as well. This is why no one sat in the van by themselves. We used to sit and eat food together. There was a lot of masti, mazaa, film quizzes, gossips etc. that we indulged in. Sajid Khan So in Housefull, are we seeing a gift from Sajid to Akshay? After all he acted in your Heyy Babyy which was your first film as a director. On the other hand Housefull comes at a time when Akshay is looking forward to a huge blockbuster to his name. I am sure that there is no gifting business happening in case of Housefull. I have a very strong intuition that this would be Akshay's biggest hit till date. Perhaps then I would state that this was Akshay's gift to me. You seem to be putting on a diplomatic stance... Really, neither am I am being diplomatic nor am I trying to sound overtly modest. In fact as you can see in the promos of Housefull, the film's tagline reads Heyy Babyy team reloads'. It doesn't read like '....from the director of Heyy Babyy'. Also, one thing that I am sure is that you would never see my film's title followed by 'A Sajid Khan film'. It would always be plain and simple 'Directed by Sajid Khan'. See, I don't live in an illusionary world. At the end of the day, no actor or a director is above a film. They all work hard to make a film. I am just a medium. After that, a film breaths its own life.

Prateik gearing up for Bollywood

Prateik Babbar Prateik has gotten over his chicken pox attack. The young actor is back on his feet. And how! Back from the shooting of Rohan Sippy's Dum Maro Dum, he's busy being rigorously trained in Western dance forms under Sandip Soparkar. Prateik goes on stage for a charity show in aid of destitute kids this week where he'll dance like there's no tomorrow. Confirming these developments, Prateik's aunt Manya Patil says, "Prateik has been practising hard in all the Western dance forms... the Salsa, tango, waltz, you name it. Filmy dancing was one area he was weak in. Now he's making up in that area." Continues the proud aunt, "When Prateik did Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na, he wasn't sure if he was going to be an actor. The aim now is to be a full-on Hindi film hero. But at the same time Prateik is very much grounded to a reality beyond cinema." Says his proud and protective aunt, "I take him with me to travel all over the country and outside. I want his world -vision to be broadened and to accommodate all kinds of reality not necessarily born from cinema. At home we don't discuss cinema incessantly. Prateik has to understand that there is a vast world outside cinema." Not that Prateik hasn't been catching up on movie experiences. He has been avidly watching all the Hindi classics including his mother Smita Patil's, but sometimes seems to enjoy the performances of other actors more than his mother's. Says his aunt, "Prateik saw Chakra and said he liked his Naseer Uncle better than his mom. I looked at him sternly. But he has his own mind. And uses it liberally. He knows exactly what to do." Prateik is making more money than most actors of his age, thanks to the upswing in his career. But he still gets the same pocket money at home that he did before he became an actor. Not a penny more not a penny less! Says his aunt, "Though Prateik's life as a professional has changed and he's making quite a lot of money, at home we haven't allowed him to acquire any outward signs of his new status. So yes Prateik still gets the same pocket money that he used to before he became a star." Prateik remains close to his mother's family. He apparently, shares a far stronger bond with his aunt Manya's son Kail who's studying in New York than his half-brother Arya Babbar. Says Manya, "To me there's no difference between Prateik and my biological son Kail." Kail who's studying in New York is approximately a year younger than Prateik. The two cousins share everything from confidences to clothes. "I've never felt any difference in my feelings for Kail and Prateik," says Manya Patil emotionally.

'Raavan' should catapult Abhishek to super-stardom

Everyone's pinning hopes on five films - HOUSE FULL, BADMAASH COMPANY, KITES, RAAJNEETI and RAAVAN - to bail the bleeding industry out of the crisis. In fact, RAAVAN wasn't much in news till Saturday night, when the first look of the film and also its music was unveiled at a classy get-together at Yash Raj. RAAVAN is an acid test for everyone associated with it, mainly Abhishek Bachchan. The stakes are high if you accept the challenge of a solo lead. While the Mani Ratnam - Abhishek Bachchan combo worked wonders in GURU, there's optimism that the duo would scale dizzy heights of success this time. The general feedback after watching glimpses of the film was, Abhishek has truly arrived! So what happens if RAAVAN works? It would catapult Abhishek to the top bracket overnight. If you look at Abhishek's body of work, you'd realize that the talented actor hasn't tasted [solo] success after GURU. The two solo starrers - DRONA and DELHI 6 - failed to do the trick, while DOSTANA and PAA were successes no doubt, but Abhishek had to share the laurels with other actors. The promotions of RAAVAN have kick-started with a bang and there's a strong possibility that it would turn out to be the big ticket to super-stardom for Abhishek.

The English version of 'Kites' will release one week later

Kites Now here's vital info. While everyone knows that the much-awaited KITES will be released worldwide on May 21, its international cut - in English language - will be released one week later, on May 28. It means, the American audiences will get to watch the two versions [Hindi and English] in two consecutive weeks. While the Hindi version, targeted at the Indian diaspora with a running time of 2 hours, will arrive on May 21, the English version, with a running of 90 minutes, will arrive at select venues on May 28. Here's more on KITES! More than a week ago, a reputed newspaper had done a 'Spoiler Alert' and had revealed the climax of this keenly anticipated film. Expectedly, the news-report sent shock waves across the length and breadth of the film fraternity, since an expose of this kind, much before its release, usually harms the film in question. While the newspaper tendered an apology the very next morning, KITES director Anurag Basu couldn't hide his anger while talking about it. "The climax mentioned in the news-report is false and fabricated. The sad part about the whole thing is, even if I say it's wrong, people might assume that's how the film actually ends," Basu sounds hurt. This supremely talented director likes to stay away from the media glare, even though he's helmed one of the biggest movies of this year. Ask him if he had differences with producer Rakesh Roshan and he jokes, "Thankfully, we didn't come to blows." But he gets serious soon enough, "Actually, it took us time to adjust to each other's pattern of working. There were no hiccups once we understood each other," he says. So will he work with the Roshans again? "You should ask them whether they would like to work with me again," he laughs.

Katrina records nursery rhymes, will build school for toddlers in Madurai

On April 7, Katrina Kaif recorded an album of nursery rhymes for the music company Sa Ra Ga Ma. The entire earnings from the album would be used to build a school for toddlers in Madurai. This is the first time in her life that Katrina has sung professionally. And according to music-company sources she has done a commendable job. There are now plans for Katrina to do an album of love songs. Exhausted but content, Katrina says, "It's a fun album for kids, something I always wanted to do, to deepen my connectivity with kids. I had a ball recording the numbers. I haven't laughed so much for a very long time." What Katrina won't say out loud is that the inspiration for the children's album is her 3-year old niece Maya, her eldest sister's child with whom Katrina has developed an indelible bond. Maya whom Katrina acknowledges as the most important person in her life, is indeed the inspiration for the kids' album and the actress' desire to help the cause of economically and emotionally deprived children. The album entitled Rhymeskool to be released later during the year will contain nursery rhymes and fun songs aimed at little children. While recording for the album, Katrina remembered all the fun she had when she was with Maya in London for Christmas and New Year. Says the proud maasi, "Maya's innocent laughter is with me constantly. I want some of Maya's happiness to go to other children who are perhaps not as well-off as she is." Katrina's funds from the Rhymeskool album will be immediately deflected to Madurai so that her dream school is built without delay. Says Katrina, "It isn't in good taste to talk about these things. It's just a tiny school for toddlers being built next to the orphanage that my mom runs in Madurai." Katrina is keen to be married so she can have her own children. "I give myself 4-5 more years in the industry. Then I'll get married and have babies." She intends to expand her charity work in the coming months and years. "The important thing is to make sure your charity efforts are well-utilized. I want to help causes where I can see an immediate result. Like the money from my album going into building a toddlers' school."

Fardeen readily gave remake rights of Kaakha Kaakha to Vipul Shah

Fardeen Khan Who says the film industry lacks a spirit of generosity and solidarity? Ask John Abraham. Super-keen to do Suriya's role in the Hindi remake of Gautham Menon's 2003 Tamil blockbuster Kaakha Kaakha, John to his dismay discovered that the Hindi remake rights of the film about a cop on a vendetta trail was with Fardeen Khan. John was very keen to do the film. When he saw the film he immediately asked his new director-pal Nishikant Kamat to make the film in Hindi. Kamath was busy scripting another action-masala film for John to be produced by UTV. But when he saw how keen John was to do Kaakha Kaakha in Hindi before anyone else did including Salman Khan (who apparently was very eager to do the film), Kamat agreed to do Kaakha Kaakha first before the other film with UTV." When it was discovered that Fardeen Khan had the rights to Kaakha Kaakha, John didn't even think he would ask Fardeen to part with the remake rights. This is where Vipul Shah stepped in. He saw Kaakha Kaakha and agreed to produce it for Nishikant Kamat with John in the lead. Vipul personally approached Fardeen and a deal was stuck without much delay or ado. Says Vipul, "Fardeen was gracious supportive and generous. I didn't have to persuade him at all. When he saw how keen we were to re-make Kaakha Kaakha in Hindi, he gave over the remake rights to us without hesitation. I don't see why we can't be more generous in this industry. When Ajay Devgn asked me to give over my title All The Best, I happily did so. It was meant to be the original title of my Aankhen. I didn't need it because at that time English titles were taboo." Did Fardeen ask to be signed as the lead of Kaakha Kaakha in Hindi? Says Vipul emphatically, "Fardeen didn't even suggest I sign him for the remake. It would've caused embarrassment for both of us if he had. I don't think we should ever mix business with pleasure. I'd love to work with Fardeen when I've the right project for him. But not be coerced emotionally into signing him." Though Vipul is not divulging the amount that he paid Fardeen to acquire the remake rights, it is reliably learnt the amount was Rs. 60 lakh. Says Vipul, "I gave Fardeen exactly the amount that he had paid for the remake rights of Kaakha Kaakha. He didn't expect anything more." Now Nishikant Kamath is busy rewriting Kaakha Kaakha for a pan-India audience. Though the original Tamil film was shot only in India the remake will be shot in many countries abroad. John's action sequences will be better than Suriya's in the original. And yes they'll be better than Salman Khan's stunts in Wanted. As for Asin signing the role opposite John, Vipul clarifies, "Genelia D'Souza was never considered. I don't know why it was written so. Asin was Nishikant's choice. He thought she was perfect for the part. The choice had nothing to do with my comfort level with her during the making of London Dreams. I don't care how many projects she turned down recently or that she was sitting home for 8 months. I'm glad she's doing our film. The film is an acid test for Nishi. So far he has been identified with strong offbeat films. Kaakha Kaakha is his first full-fledged commercial film. And John-Asin I a fresh pair. Always exciting for audiences."
