Industry Roundup: Josh Groban to Give Acting a Shot

Carell Comedy Expands: Marisa Tomei and Josh Groban have joined the Steve CarellRyan Gosling marital-crisis comedy that follows a father (Carell) who gets tutored by Gosling’s character in the ways of romance after his marriage falls apart. Tomei will play the first woman Carell’s character dates post-breakup, and Groban will play the boyfriend of Carell’s daughter, played by Emma Stone. Justin Timberlake, what have you started?! [Variety]

Welcome Home: Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon will star in the Jason SegelEd Helms comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home, written and directed by the Duplass brothers (Cyrus, The Puffy Chair). The film centers on two brothers, one of whom is going through a midlife crisis (Helms) and believes his wife (Greer) is having an affair. The other is a “lovable loser” (Segel) who still lives with his mom (Sarandon). Helms as a neurotic! Segel as a slacker! Sarandon as a MILF! Talk about casting against type. [Variety]

What Would Bella Do?: Lily Collins will star in a new version of Romeo and Juliet “being aimed squarely at the Twilight audience.” The film is being written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Tourist), who — in a comparison that no doubt caused Shakespeare to die all over again in his grave — explained, “Before Twilight there was Romeo and Juliet.” Collins is about to star alongside Taylor Lautner in Abduction, so no doubt she’ll be able to pick up a thing or two about how to pull off an angsty glare and a tortured line reading. [Deadline]

Country Times: Lizzy Caplan and Ron Livingston will star in the indie comedy Queens of Country, about a beauty queen and line-dancing champion (Caplan) who finds an iPod filled with her favorite country songs in a local truck-stop bathroom … and then “upends her world to track down the man of her dreams.” We assume this quest is somehow related to the iPod, but who ever knows with these quirky indie comedies, right? [Variety]

Schneider's Modern Life: John Schneider (Dukes of Hazzard, Smallville) will play a “modern George Bailey” in the feature film Doonby, in which he’ll star as a “happy-go-lucky drifter” who is mysteriously immune to the troubles that strike the other residents of his small Texas town. The film, described as "Crazy Heart meets It’s a Wonderful Life," will be written and directed by British filmmaker Peter Mackenzie. Now if Schneider earns an Oscar nom like Jeff Bridges and Jimmy Stewart did, we'll know something is really special about this drifter guy. [HR]

Passion Play: Passion Pit will tour North America this summer, followed by a few stops in Europe, Japan, and Australia, before opening eight fall arena dates for Muse this fall. Playing in venues like the Staples Center, let’s hope the band remember their Manners. [Pitchfork]

Cure to Boring Title: The title of David Cronenberg’s latest film has been changed from The Talking Cure to A Dangerous Method. The movie is about psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender)’s passionate affair with a disturbed young patient (Keira Knightley). From one “Wasn’t that a John Grisham book or something?” title to another. [Deadline]

Despite Warning From FBI, Port Authority Reportedly Let Zazi Through Checkpoint

It would appear that The Wall Street Journal’s attempting to launch its new "Metro" section with a bang. The paper is reporting that — despite being told by the FBI to stop and search would-be subway bomber Najibullah Zazi's car as he drove up to the George Washington Bridge last September — Port Authority police instead waved him across, failing to uncover the two pounds of explosives hidden inside his car. Though this detail has been discussed among police and has caused increased tension between the Port Authority (which is tasked with protecting bridges, tunnels, and airports between New York and New Jersey) and the NYPD, according to the Journal, it has not been publicly revealed. The Journal floats one theory from a Port Authority officer that police didn't have a warrant, so they couldn't search the vehicle thoroughly as anything seized would have been inadmissible in court.

After more than 400 performances and three different casts, God of Carnage will close on Broadway on June 27, the producers announced today. The show opened in March of 2009 with the starry foursome of Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden and went on to win the 2009 Tony for best play. In its third cast now (which includes Lucy Liu and Daniels in a different role), the show hasn’t been able to match the commercial success of the initial run. [NYT]

Bloomberg’s Bermudan Life Explored by Times

The Times has cast its investigative eye at Mayor Bloomberg’s somewhat mysterious “life in Bermuda," positing that Bloomberg makes the two-hour trip down to his $10 million waterfront estate “about twice a month.” The mayor has taken great pains to keep the details of his visits to his vacation home a secret, as he “steadfastly refuses to say when he is on the island,” and has “blocked aviation Web sites from making public the movements of his private planes.”

When he's there, the mayor tips big (once leaving a $175 tip on top of a 17 percent automatic gratuity), golfs a lot (often playing fifteen hours over the course of one weekend), and dines regularly with Bermuda’s premier. The central takeaway from the story, though, is that the Bermudan population is fiercely loyal to Bloomberg, thinking about their country as a pit stop of sorts in the high-speed auto race that is the mayor’s life.

"Residents here view him as one of their own — as much a Bermudan as a New Yorker. They follow his battles against term limits and New York City crime, and argue that their island plays a key role in restoring his energy and helping him succeed in office. 'We provide him with a place to unwind for a day or two, and then go back to a very important job, not just to New York, but to the world,' said John Swan, Bermuda’s former premier and a frequent Bloomberg lunch guest.

The Times notes, as something of an afterthought, that there is perhaps something a bit disconcerting about a mayor who makes surreptitious (and frequent) trips out of the country — citing a time that he was most likely in Bermuda when a City Hall aide was hit by a car, “ordinarily an emergency that would prompt a mayoral visit” — but the article, from beginning to end, is ultimately as harmless as a mai tai sipped at the beach. The piece's final thought? "'He is the perfect neighbor,' said David A. Brown, who lives next door to Mr. Bloomberg. 'He is very respectful; he never makes noise.'"

Stephen Hawking: When Aliens Visit Earth, We’re in Trouble

"We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach. [Contacting aliens would be] a little too risky ... If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans." —Stephen Hawking, who believes aliens are out there, in his Discovery Channel documentary Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking, which aired tonight. Conan O’Brien returned to Universal City last night, the latest stop on his 32-city comedy tour, where he was greeted by some famous friends. Jim Carrey joined O’Brien onstage dressed as Superman for a duet of “It’s Not Easy to Be Me” (a parody of that Five for Fighting song you love so much). And Jonah Hill, Jon Hamm, and Aziz Ansari showed up for a famous O’Brien bit involving clips from Walker, Texas Ranger (the sketch has been rebranded "Chuck Norris Rural Policeman Handle"). O’Brien acknowledged the proximity to his former home throughout the show. “This is my first time back to Universal Studios since I lost my job," he began, "Sit back and enjoy an incredibly awkward show." And later, more amusingly: “Listen very carefully,” he told the audience, pointing in the direction of the NBC-Universal lot, “Bad ideas are being greenlit.” [Hollywood Insider/EW]

Lohan Reportedly Dropped From Next Film

For the past few years, the (essentially nonexistent) career of Lindsay Lohan has been something of a running Hollywood punchline — but now, especially in light of her endless litany of personal troubles, the whole thing is just getting sort of sad. The troubled actress was just dropped from The Other Side, a movie she was set to star in about a grad student working on a deserted island. The film’s writer/director, David Michaels, told TMZ, “Our team simply chose to move on from Lindsay and we'll soon be announcing a replacement.” Lohan will be appearing in the upcoming Robert Rodriguez film Machete, though who would really be surprised at this point if they announce her part has been cut? Pedro Espada Storms Off TV Set When Asked About Residence

Granted, he’s coming off a pretty awful week, but Pedro Espada did not exactly help his case this weekend, as the State Senate majority leader angrily fled the set of Channel 2’s Eye of New York mid-interview when Espada — facing state and federal charges for stealing $14 million from his Soundview HealthCare Network — was pressed about allegations that he really lives in Westchester (as opposed to in the Bronx district he represents).

When reporter Marcia Kramer kindly reminded him of an incident last year in which she showed up at his Mamaroneck home and (get ready for this) he put on an orange ski mask, held a baby in front of his face, and then sped off in a car driven by his wife, Espada got testy:

“I was not hiding from anybody. I've owned that home since 1991," he said. "This is not a mudslinging session. If you want to make it that, you can come hide in the bushes at my house and you repeat the same thing all over again. Human decency should prevail, even on this show."

After the commercial break, Espada stormed off the set — and it was caught on tape! It’s kind of fun to watch, though it would be more fun if he were clad in a orange ski mask with prop baby in tow.

Arizona Immigration Law Draws Ire of Sharpton, New York Politicians

A number of high-profile detractors spoke out this weekend regarding Arizona’s controversial new immigration law — which would make being an undocumented immigrant in the state a crime, and allow police officers to ask anyone “suspected of being an illegal immigrant” for documentation. Reverend Al Sharpton and New York–area Hispanic leaders are planning a protest involving "civil disobedience" when the bill — which President Obama has referred to as “misguided” — goes into effect in late July or August.

Senator Chuck Schumer and Mayor Bloomberg also expressed their disapproval. "We do need comprehensive immigration law in this country but not like this,” Schumer said, "This law is mean-spirited and I'm opposed to it." And leave it to Bloomberg to point out the potential financial repercussions: "As a country, America will be badly hurt if more states follow Arizona's lead. Foreign investment and tourism are critical to our national economy, and this new law sends exactly the wrong message to international companies and travelers." A nationwide rally is scheduled for May 1, with the New York City protest to take place in Foley Square.

Steven Seagal Accused of More Gross Stuff

A couple of weeks after a lawsuit surfaced accusing Steven Seagal of sexually harassing a former "assistant," an actress who worked with him twenty years ago has come forward with more nasty allegations about the former Lawman. The unnamed actress, who appeared with Seagal in the 1991 movie Out for Justice, says that she was only hired after Seagal burst in on her while she was changing and saw her boobs. Later, she says, he called her and asked her to "perform a sex act on him." Naturally, she declined. "Days later," she says, "I was fired."

The actress is also accusing Seagal of using beepers to summon other actresses to his hotel room where they would, we assume, run lines together. Seagal's lawyer and publicist both called the claims false and took a vague guess as to whom this actress might be. "I suspect she is a resentful onetime actress who has not become a major star."

Eliot Spitzer Isn’t So Sure About Andrew Cuomo

As a part of the Eliot Spitzer Image Rehabilitation Tour of 2010, the former governor sat down with the Times last week to talk about Andrew Cuomo, the man who seems poised to follow in Spitzer's footsteps from attorney general to governor. The big takeaway from the interview: Spitzer isn't much of a Cuomo fan. In fact, he thinks he's kind of a pushover who hasn't been hard enough on Wall Street and is too driven by politics.

On Cuomo's approach toward the financial industry: The AG's work has been superficial and he hasn't put in the "harder work that would have taken a bit more time, and would have been, frankly, a bit more disruptive to Wall Street."

On Cuomo's ability to tackle big problems: "I think the issue is, will he have the stomach to pick political fights or to pick fights that will have negative political consequences?"

On whether Cuomo will win his vote: "I do want to see who else will be in the race. I don't say that to slight him. He hasn't answered the hard questions yet about how he will govern the state, so I think it's fair to say, 'Let's wait and see.'"

A spokesman for Andrew Cuomo responded to Spitzer with a perfectly crafted burn: "The attorney general's record, credibility and honor speak for themselves, as do Mr. Spitzer's."

Coco’s Production Company Is on the Move

Conan O'Brien and Warner Bros. Television are on the verge of signing a production deal that would complete his divorce from NBC. Conaco, O'Brien's production company, is still set up at NBC Universal through the end of the TV season (it even has one pilot in consideration at the Peacock). But once that deal expires, Conaco is expected to become part of Warner Bros. TV, sister studio to TBS. This means Conaco will be producing original programming for TBS, potentially giving us all a reason to watch before 11 p.m. [Deadline]

British Foreign Office Makes Jokes at Pope’s Expense

The British government is falling all over itself today apologizing for a secret memo leaked to the Sunday Telegraph that contains some novel ideas for what the Pope should do when he visits the U.K. in September. Among the suggestions: He should open up an abortion clinic, release his own line of condoms, sing a duet with the Queen, and, most amusing, roll around on the floor with children to promote healthy living.

The list originated from an official in the Foreign Office who sent it around the department. When his colleagues saw it, they flipped out. Now the Foreign Office has issued a strong apology, calling the note "a foolish document that does not in any way reflect U.K. Government or Foreign Office policy or views."

Apology or not, the Church is pissed. A Bishop in Nottingham called the proposals "appalling" and added that "it's outlandish and outrageous to assume that any of the ideas are in any way suitable for the Pope." We're inclined to agree. Except for the ideas for the Pope to set up a "training course for all bishops on child abuse," announce a "harder line on child abuse," announce "Vatican sponsorship for a network of AIDS clinics," "launch helpline for abused children," and a few others. The rest though, outlandish!

Barack Obama to Meet Billy Graham

Before heading back to D.C. from his North Carolina vacation, President Obama plans to have a prune-juice summit with 91-year-old evangelist Billy Graham. Neither Graham's spokesman nor White House spokesman Bill Burton said what Graham and Obama will be talking about, but Burton did offer a possibility. "It's a fair guess that they'll pray together," he said. Obama will be the twelfth president Graham has met or thirteenth if you count future presidents (he met Sarah Palin last year). Dragon Is Back on Top

People forgot to go to the movies in what turned out to be the lowest-grossing weekend of the year so far. How to Train Your Dragon claimed the No. 1 spot at the box office with just $15 million, while Jennifer Lopez's The Back-Up Plan took in $12.25 million: not stellar, although better than some research data predicted, and enough to come in second place, finishing ahead of Date Night's $10.6 million and The Losers' $9.6 million. Eliot Spitzer Doc Premieres at Tribeca: Joe Bruno, Ken Langone, and Roger Stone Dance on His Grave

Last night, the most anticipated film of the Tribeca Film Festival opened — and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The unfinished Untitled Eliot Spitzer Project, directed by Oscar-winner Alex Gibney, felt like a comeback — and an onscreen wake, as Spitzer’s antagonists Joe Bruno, Ken Langone, and Roger Stone danced on Spitzer’s grave, even as Client 9 struggled to raise himself from the dead.

The doc is a ricocheting, lowbrow-to-highbrow recap, veering from tabloid headlines and prostitute interviews to lofty campaign ads and reflections on the economic crisis. There’s also little in it that has not already emerged via Rough Justice, the biography by Gibney’s collaborator Peter Elkind. “Angelina,” the woman that Elkin and Gibney assert was Spitzer’s real main squeeze at the Emperors Club, was in the documentary — but only in spirit. Gibney hired an attractive actress to read her transcribed descriptions of liaisons with the former governor (“no black socks”) and accounts of her sketchy FBI interviews. Spitzer himself did not attend — but Republican operative Roger Stone did, telling the Post afterward that the film was “completely biased” — no surprise, since Gibney hints heavily at a conservative conspiracy. (Also in attendance: Darren Dopp, the Emperors Club’s Cecil Suwal, Peter Elkind, Mort Zuckerman, Nora Ephron, Nick Pileggi, and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.)

Also not in attendance or onscreen: Ashley Dupré, who refused to participate because she wanted editorial control. In an e-mail to the AP, she explained, hilariously (given her Post romance column and regular appearances on Fox): “I didn't think it was smart to participate after what I've seen with editing … I think everyone is trying to move on with their lives and by me participating in their project would only open old wounds.” In the film, Gibney suggests that Murdoch and News Corp. have been counter-programming Spitzer’s comeback with Dupré’s media appearances. In the post film Q&A, Gibney suggested that Dupré “saw this as a personal opportunity but was being used by people with a political agenda.” Still, it wasn’t all bad news for Dupré: Fellow escort Ashley Youmans praised Dupré’s “perfect coochie.”

“Angelina” may have spoken to Gibney before anyone else — but she reveals that multiple journalists were calling her on her cell phone during Dupré’s tabloid run. She also said that she believes a lot of her johns were so much “nicer” than her real dates that she “stopped dating in the real world. My standards were lifted.” She is now a commodities day trader.

But the real stars of the film were undoubtedly Langone, Roger Stone, and Joe Bruno, who can barely contain their glee. Langone, especially, cannot hold it in — or let go. He says the worst thing Spitzer did was to make him “defy my faith — because I can’t forgive him.”

Spitzer himself is political and careful — never revealing more than the basics, and refusing to say much at all in the doc that he hasn’t said elsewhere, and just as carefully. But his most hilarious responses were in response to stories about his legendary temper. “I hope I didn’t say that,” or “those may not have been my words,” he said disingenuously, and repeatedly. On the “fucking steamroller” comment, he explained that he had “been listening to James Taylor” and that it was “honestly meant in good humor.” It’s that blatant Clintonian doublespeak, which stops so very far short of full disclosure that it will make it hard for anyone to trust that he’s ever being truly forthcoming, and which will make his resurrection that much harder.

Saturday Night Live Recap: Gabourey Sidibe Is Not Precious

Gabourey Sidibe is a boundless ball of energy. She has shown that over and over again in her talk-show performances, red-carpet interviews, and appearances on The Soup. And dammit, it's infectious. Everyone loves Gabby and that Valley Girl accent of hers. Including us. We were psyched when she landed SNL hosting duties and were hopeful that she would be able to harness that energy and her wide-eyed enthusiasm to put on an awesome show.

We're going with yes. Sure, Sidibe flubbed some lines and wasn't able to do much with weak characters (the Jamaican nurse in the Suze Orman sketch), but overall she gave a super-charming, enthusiastic performance that could have won over even the most hardened Gabby hater (assuming such a vile creature even exists).

The charm offensive started with the musical monologue, which was just like her, energetic and fun. And it addressed a topic that the entire episode would drive home: she's not Precious (capital p) but she is precious (lowercase p). Our post-monologue buzz was quickly killed by sketches based around impressions of Suze Orman and Steve Harvey; from there the rest of the show had its ups (the "Digital Short," "New Alarm Clocks," Stefon on "Weekend Update") and downs ("Public Employee of the Year").

But before we get into the best and worst of the night, let's talk MGMT. We get not wanting to play songs from old albums, especially when you just put a new one out, but it seems like they really missed an opportunity to hook some new fans last night. Not that "Flash Delirium" and "Brian Eno" weren't fine (they were totally fine), but if they had played "Kids" or "Time to Pretend" we can't help but think that a lot of people watching last night would be more likely to remember who that band with the bug-eyed guitarist was.

Best
First a nod to the "Digital Short," which was so strange yet so delightful, and "New Alarm Clocks," which provided the best line of the night ("Wake up, you got a boner about nothing"). Those were good, but "Crazy Lady Yelling From Window" was the best. SNL takes a lot of crap for being poorly written, but this sketch was anything but. It was inventive, original, and damn funny. Sidibe nailed "Mrs. Johnson," a grumpy old lady who first comes across as crazy but is soon revealed to be a savant with encyclopedic, or maybe that should be wikipedic, knowledge of the world.

Worst
Is SNL even trying with the cold open anymore? If they are, they should try harder. Each week, it seems, Fred Armisen's Barack Obama impression is supposed to carry the whole sketch. But when he's talking about something as mind-numbingly boring as financial reform, that's a hefty task. This week's went a whole 75 seconds before even attempting a joke. That's like 75 years in TV time.

If the fifteen-second commercial for Betty White's episode is any indication, we're in for a real treat in two weeks.

Lindsey Graham Backs Away From Climate Bill

Sure he helped write it, but that doesn't mean Lindsey Graham has to support the Senate's climate change and energy bill. The South Carolina Senator announced yesterday that he will stop participating in negotiations with John Kerry and Joe Lieberman on the bill because Senate Democrats have delayed its unveiling (which was supposed to happen tomorrow) in order to focus on immigration reform. And with that, Democrats have lost the only Republican who was willing to work with them on climate change and energy reform, leaving them to go it alone. It's starting to seem like they like it better that way.
