Move aside. There is no room for artifice in Mahesh Manjrekar's latest work. A raw guttural gritty intense edgy mordant and finally devastating look at the world of the damaged and the ravaged; City Of Gold is as powerful in portraying a bereft working class as Molly Maguires was about Irish mine-workers. Except for the fact that there is no room for pretty visuals in City Of Gold.
Manjrekar portrays the opposite of the beau monde. That murky end of the spectrum where the shenanigans of the IPL brigade seem as distant as the promise of that pot of Gold at the end of the rainbow.
Manjrekar's chawl-life, captured on camera with merciless frankness by Ajit Reddy, is a bleak world of dreamers and losers who are often the one and the same. His heroes (if we may call the young characters that) are offered no hope of solace or redemption. This is the side of the slum that Danny Boyle missed when he made that clever adrenaline rush of splendid squalor in Slumdog Millionaire.
City Of Gold is neither stylish nor swanky enough to attract elitist readings of poverty. Fiercely radical in thought and intensely socialistic in execution the film plunges beneath the poverty line to emerge with characters whose despair is not an act for the camera. The sweat and grime, the corruption and crime are characters of their own in Manjrekar's teeming jostling chaotic world of abysmal nullity.
Mumbai never looked murkier and less inviting.
Taking a panoramic look at the lives of thousands of mill-workers in Mumbai who went on an indefinite strike in 1982 is like trying to hold the ocean in a teacup. Manjrekar in what could easily be rated as his finest most cogent work to date does just that. He holds a universe in the eye of the camera. Its world of the doomed and damned, no frills attached.
His return to fine form and the enrapturing energy level that sweeps across a multitude of lives without trivializing or sidelining any of the characters who come into camera range, are reasons enough to celebrate the joys of neo-realistic cinema. This cinema in all its grime and glory.
But wait, wait...City Of Gold not only marks the return of a storyteller who tells it like it is, without the comfort of shortcuts and shallow shindigs. It's also a macroscopic look at people who populate the fringes. Their silent screams of protest are seldom heard in cinema without their sounds being converted into some kind of vicarious relief and comfort for the audience.
Not for a second do we feel any comforting distance from the misery of Manjrekar's characters. The smells of scant cooking in the kitchen and the soundless noise of hearts and ribs breaking at given intervals swamp our senses creating an overpowering and riveting world of inequality and resentment.
Manjrekar shoots his characters' emotions in tight comprehensive close-ups but wastes no time shedding excessive tears over their lives. The editor (Sarvesh Parab) cuts the raw material with ruthless economy, leaving no room for humbug and certainly no space for commercial embellishments.
So the question, what happened to those thousands of mill workers who were overnight rendered bankrupt after the mills closed down? You will find some uncomfortable answers in City Of Gold. But most of the time you will be faced with questions about the quality of life we choose to hand over to those who are economically and emotionally weak.
Welcome back, Mr Manjrekar.
Would this film have worked without the actors who don't look like they are facing a camera? The whole battalion of characters flicker to life as though they were a part of an extended family shot by hidden cameras for a reality show to be aired at 'grime' time. Television actor Karan Patel as the youngest scion of Manjrekar's troubled family is a revelation. He portrays pain hurt humiliation angst compromise and anger with complete authority.

Long before Director invented Perversity , Billy Wilder made that tender film The Apartment...not knowing that some day far away in that madness on the look-out for method called Bollywood Jagmohan Mundhra would use that title and little else from Wilder's gentle movie.
Mundhra's Apartment reads like a frighteningly disembodied episode, neither passionate nor bloody enough to qualify as a genuine slasher flick, of a television mini-series built around the theme of suburban loneliness. We've seen many films on the theme of what Mumbai does to the outsider. This one, by its own subverted logic, shows the outsider, a mentally disturbed girl from rural Maharashtra, creating havoc in a neatly-arrange spick-and-span apartment block somewhere in downtown Mumbai.
Neetu Chandra is the life and death of this surprisingly-relaxed almost inert suspense thriller. She acts strange and with reason. Her character suffers from acute insecurities. Neetu Chandra makes her home in chic air-hostess Tanushree Dutta's home and resents the city girl's debonair boyfriend (Rohit Roy, seeming to enjoy his part).
The build-up is a little too slow for a slasher-movie (apartment gone to the devil!). By the time the payback is on, we are much too distracted by the trivial atmospherics and incidental characters played by guys and women who seem to have been rejected in fashion shows in the first round itself. These are people probably pronounce 'champagne' with the gee.
The four principal characters hold together the unhurried plot. Anupam Kher as Tanushree's poet neighbour is an engaging diversion. Other distractions like a tacky item song and intermittent song breaks choreographed like a high-school function are a huge impediment.
It's Neetu's show all the way. The girl knows how to hold an expression without looking like she was doing it for effect. Wish there was more to hold up her performance. Most of the time she performs in a vacuum.
Lately Jagmohan Mundhra made film like Provoked and Shoot On Sight which had a point to make. In Apartment he strolls back into the province of the pointless.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 24 Apr 2010 | 3:45 am "I will marry very soon," Lakshmi GopalaswamyPopular South Indian actress Lakshmi Gopalaswamy is now basking the success of the movie Aaptha Rakshaka. A little more than a year after Chandni Chowk To China,
Deepika Padukone is pairing up once again with Akshay Kumar in Housefull.
This is a first for her where she would be seen with a lead hero again since
she is yet to face the camera with Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan
and Farhan Akhtar after Om Shanti Om, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Love Aaj Kal and
Karthik Calling Karthik respectively. Joginder Tuteja catches up with the
young woman who is all set to have an eventful journey ahead this year starting
with Housefull which is conveniently the most awaited film of the current
reason.
Sajid has always maintained that he along with Sajid Nadiadwala, Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh have been friends for years. How did you end up making a place for yourself in this gang during the shooting of Housefull?
In fact at no point did I feel left out or disconnected even though I know that Arjun and me were the only new ones in the group. Everyone else had actually worked together in some outing or the other. The bonding happened once we went to London. We all used to hang out, eat together and rehearse scenes with each other.
You must have sense some familiarity with Akshay at least to begin with. After all he is the only actor in your short career so far with whom you are doing a second film (after Chandni Chowk To China).
That's right. I am very fond of him. He is a great professional and a great entertainer. In fact I had signed Housefull when I was working with him in Chandni Chowk To China. I remember that it was during the film's shoot in Bangkok when Sajid Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala came to sign us.
Tell me honestly Deepika, the moment you started work with Akshay in Housefull, did you ever discuss about the under performance of Chandni Chowk To China?
Yes, we had such conversations. However, what was the content of this conversation is something that should remain only between the two of us (smiles).
Another film of yours which underperformed in the recent times was Karthik Calling Karthik. Didn't that overtly disappoint you? See, I am glad that people appreciated my performance and also happy that critics had kind words to say. Producers too were happy with the overall outcome of the film so no, there are no regrets.
In case of a family entertainer Housefull, you must be having a far better comfort feel about the eventual outcome of the film, right? I think Sajid (Khan) is good with this genre. I remember watching Heyy Babyy and enjoying it tremendously. What I liked about the film was that despite its comic treatment, there was a lot of emotional depth to the narrative. The film had some meaning after all. The same holds good for Housefull. From an out and out commercial family entertainer like this, you would definitely come out feeling quite good. There is drama, action, romance and above all a beautiful bond of relationships right through the course of the film. It is a film that you would come out loving and enjoying. Even though the
film is a comedy, the content has a lot of soul to it.
Really?
Yes, there was laughter throughout and the best part was that Sajid himself has such a great sense of humour. He creates comedy as per an actor's personality. At the end of the day, comedy is all about timing. A lot of times it happens that something may seem quite funny on paper but when actors perform them, the impact may not be as desired. On the other hand, the situation could also be vice versa when due to an actor's effort, a scene may turn out to be extremely hilarious.
Talking about the commercial aspects of Housefull, rest assured one can say that it is a solid blockbuster in the offering. You too share similar sentiments about the film's acceptance amongst the audience?
Well, I wish that for every film of mine. After all when I sign a film, I do so only because I believe in it. As for Housefull, I know for sure that it is a very good film. What works and doesn't work on a particular Friday is something that no one would ever know. However, given the right kind of ingredients that Sajid has brought together in the film, I don't see any reason why it would not be considered a huge film and take a very good
start at the box office.
Now that's some confidence. (Laughs) No, I'm not confident out of arrogance but due to the very fact that the film has right content. It has a tremendous repeat value. By now everyone knows about the letter that Sajid wrote to all us actors where he stated - 'Welcome to the biggest hit of your career'. I have neatly filed it in my office. I am longing to open it after 30th April.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 24 Apr 2010 | 3:35 am Kuch Kariye producers to sell their own musicThe film makers came up with a novel idea to market the film. Tamil superstar Vikram, who makes his debut in Hindi films with Mani Ratnam's Raavan, is a traumatized man.
While in the Hindi version of Raavan he plays Aishwarya Rai's cop-husband Dev, in the Tamil version he plays the brutal outlaw Veera. With both the versions being shot simultaneously, Vikram was constantly running in and out of the two completely different characters, makeup and languages, sometimes within half an hour.
Says a source, "It got really taxing for him. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the same character in two languages, Vikram had to go from Raavan in Tamil to Rama in Hindi after every shot. At one point he almost lost the plot."
One day the film's dress designer Sabyasachi Chakraborty had dropped in on location to discuss Vikram's look and clothes. Vikram was informed by Mani Ratnam's assistant that he needed to sit with Sabyasachi to discuss his look with him for the film.
When the two of them met both began to give their viewpoints to each other about how the character played by Vikram would dress up in the film.
Says Vikram, "Within half an hour discussing the character's look, we both realised that something was terribly wrong. I wanted my looks to be simple and minimalist so that I didn't have to change much from the way I am. I suggested to Sabyasachi to keep my skin- tone black. On the other hand, Sabyasachi was keen on a suave and clean look. And was very was confused as to why was I was giving such a strange brief." Sabysachi felt Vikram's look couldn't be dark, and told Vikram that if he was so keen on a dark look then maybe he could try and do something dark but formal.
Laughs Vikram. "I suggested a dhoti. Sabyasachi got really worked up and told me it was no longer funny and asked me him if I was really sure about my character Dev dressing like a rugged rustic character. That's when both of us realised the confusion. I was talking about the looks of Veera (the outlaw character) my character in the Tamil version and Sabyasachi was talking about Dev (the cop) the character I'm playing in the Hindi version."
Explains Vikram, "In the Hindi version it's Abhishek Bachchan who is the outlaw character. And the fact that I'm playing two opposite characters in the two versions had caused the confusion."
Though exhausted by the effort Vikram thoroughly enjoyed the unprecedented challenge of playing two characters at the same time in two languages.

Neil Nitin Mukesh is injured from head to toe. And it's not faked for the camera. He has raw wounds and bruises all over. Neil can barely talk.
Doing traumatic parts has become a part of Neil Nitin Mukesh's acting karma. Just when he thought he had gotten over the ordeal of being strip-searched and jailed in Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail, Neil is now in the thick of the worst possible physical and emotional trauma.
For his role in Lafangey Parindey which he is currently shooting from 11 in the morning past-midnight at Yashraj Studios , Neil is required to get out on the streets and fight man to man with his adversaries, a la Vinod Khanna in Gulzar's Apne and Nagarjuna in Ram Gopal Varma's Shiva.
"Except for one detail," Neil corrects, as he winces in real pain. "There's nothing fake about the fists of fury that fly in Pradeep Sarkar's film. It requires the rawest of physical violence and it can't be faked. So if you see me now I'm covered with welters, wounds and bruises all gifted to me every day while shooting this, the most dangerous film of my career."
Luckily Neil has moved out of his South Mumbai home to Powai for the duration of the shooting of Lafangey Parindey. "Otherwise if my mother saw what I look like she would have freaked out. I'm getting physically hurt every day. I'm covered in bruises. Because I am light-skinned the hurt marks show up bright red on me within seconds. I look... alarming!! Even to myself in the mirror!"
Neil has temporarily packed off his makeup man. "I don't need Aseembhai to paint on fake blood. My stunt director Shyam Kaushalji is doing a very good job of making my bruises and lacerations look real...because they are real."
This isn't Neil's first tryst with danger. "Shyam Kaushalji is someone I really respect. I touch his feet every morning although he really puts me through the most dangerous situations. In New York, he made me run across a street with speeding cars. In Aa Dekhen Zara he had thrown me off the 18th floor. But nothing had prepared me for what Shyamji has in store for me in Lafangey Parindey."
Though Neil is unwilling to reveal the plot, Lafangey Parindey is about rivalry among bike gangs of Mumbai. It requires Neil engage in serious and authentic fights on the streets. Says Neil, "Fortunately I'm not a stranger to these kind of raw gutter-level combats. I may come across as soft spoken now. But I've gone through my share of campus fights during my college days. In fact I've a fierce temper problem. So far I had kept it in check. But now in Lafangey Parindey I'm disturbed to see the violent ill-tempered side of me emerging effortlessly."
Then Neil adds, "What surprises me is the deep dark angry side to Dada's (director Pradeep Sarkar) personality. Who would have thought the man who made Parineeta and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag had so much anger and violence in him?"Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Apr 2010 | 6:49 am Karan Johar at war with RGV - Oneindia
Source: Entertainment - Google News | 23 Apr 2010 | 6:06 am Dilip Mehta's Cooking With Stella scores at LA
"The Gala opening of the festival with our film at Los Angeles was a smashing success." So says Dilip Mehta, the director of Cooking With Stella.
Speaking from LA, Mehta says, "It was a sell-out screening and the party that followed at the Cabana Club was unbelievably riveting. The entire venue was packed to full capacity with great India cuisine and the bartenders kept every glass brimmed."
The response to the film at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles was overwhelming.
Says Mehta, "The huge theatre was packed. The audience was enormously supportive and so fully understood the many layers of our film. Even in the darkness I could make out the smiles and hear the laughter!"
After the screening there was chaos. "We were mobbed by strangers following the screening. This is always gratifying because they give honest opinions since they don't have an axe to grind with you. The verdict was that they loved the film; they loved the dialogue and the fresh storyline because it was unlike the usual masala dished out and they loved Seema, Shreeya and Lisa's convincing performances. The compliments were many, many, many," signs off Dilip Mehta.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Apr 2010 | 6:02 am Apartment: Movie ReviewThe builder of this Apartment has nothing to offer, neither good location, nor design forget about beauty and aura. She is someone who can rightly be called the 'Eternal Sunshine Girl', for her smile is something that simply makes everyone's day come alive. Even though she hails from a small town of Himachal, in no time, she has made an impeccable mark in the Bollywood. She is none other than Kangna Ranaut, the girl whose name is on everyone's lips ever since she said 'Cheese' to the 70mm silver screen.
Kangna was the topic of every discussion for the fact that she just got a National Award for her superlative performance in the smash hit film Fashion. If our sources are to be believed, then, after having endorsed FMCG like Levis jeans etcâ¦, Kangna has now been roped in as the brand ambassador of 'Alcatel Mobiles'. Our source also added that "The said company, after making its mark initially in the market, was out of the scene for a long time now. But, it's going to bouncing back big time. That's the reason they have roped in a 'Hot Property' like Kangna Ranaut, as they feel that Kangna's persona and her face-value are simply enough for the company to attract the attention that will set the ball rolling for them. The ads too, have been conceptualized in such a way that it's going to be boosting the company's image big time." The (re)launch of the said brand of mobiles will happen around the late this year.
Well, all that we can say is that, here's looking at you, Kangs!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Apr 2010 | 5:44 am Akshay Kumar's flirtatious ways inspire Imran - Oneindia
Source: Entertainment - Google News | 23 Apr 2010 | 5:13 am Zayed Khan to endorse Pan Bahar
The very mention of the name Zayed Khan brings to our memory a very suave gentleman with stylish mannerisms. Zayed's histrionics can be 'witnessed' in his diverse roles in films like Main Hoon Na, Blue... to name a few. Even though this Khan is yet to make his place under the sun in the tinsel town, he has already started making waves in the ad circles.
Bollywood Hungama's confirmed sources said that Zayed Khan signed up to endorse the pan masala brand called 'Pan Bahar', which has the tagline 'Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayi'. With Khan coming on board with this product, one really wonders about the Khan-fixation that the said company seems to have. Readers maybe aware of the fact that, prior to Zayed Khan coming in, it was the late Feroz Khan and his actor-son Fardeen Khan who were the 'promoters' of the brand. Sources say that the promoters and the owners of the company are very close to the Khan family. And added to that, the officials felt that Zayed is one guy who can carry the image of the brand effortlessly. Hope that this association does wonders to both, Zayed as well as 'Pan Bahar'!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Apr 2010 | 5:12 am Live Chat: Lara Dutta today at 1330 hrs IST
