Last Night on Late Night: 'Steve' Colbert Interviews Gorillaz

Interviewing a cartoon band can be tricky so last night Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn dropped his animated persona to be interviewed by Stephen Colbert. Colbert, however, was enraged by the substitution, and Albern and Gorillaz animator Jamie Hewlett had to be interviewed by Colbert's own alter ego, the deferential liberal comedian "Steve" Colbert. Someone in a media studies graduate program is probably writing a thesis about the whole thing right now. Avatars also came up on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, where Jeffrey Dean Morgan discussed, well, Avatar and the ethics of finding Zoe Saldana's character attractive. On his show, Jon Stewart questioned Comedy Central's principled stance on the recent South Park episode featuring Muhammad, and finally, Jimmy Kimmel embarrassed Chace Crawford with a chart detailing his Gossip Girl character's sexual conquests. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Helen Mirren Teams Up With Russell Brand

The Queen and The Jester: Helen Mirren will star opposite Russell Brand in Arthur, Warner Bros.’ remake of the 1981 comedy. Mirren will play the longtime nanny of the title character (Brand), a boozy playboy who was portrayed by Dudley Moore in the original. Dammit, now we're going to have to actually see this. [HR]

Eisner's Escape: Breck Eisner (Sahara, The Crazies) is in talks to direct New Line’s remake of Escape From New York. The new version of the 1981 original has been in development for several years; Gerard Butler was originally attached to star but has since left for creative differences. Considering the story - in which a soldier-turned-criminal has 24 hours to find the president following the crash of Air Force One - seeing anyone but Kiefer Sutherland play this role is just going to be weird. [Variety]

More Monsters: Disney has announced that there will be a sequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc. to be released on November 16, 2012. No further details were made available, not even a title. Please Disney, anything but Monsters, Inc. 2: The Shriek-uel. [HR]

Portman Gets A BFF: Greta Gerwig, in her first role since her starring turn in Greenberg, has been cast in the upcoming untitled Ivan Reitman comedy opposite Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. Previously known as Friends With Benefits, the film explores the question of whether two long-term friends can have a sexual relationship without falling in love. Gerwig will play a “brainy friend of Portman’s character who is the first to recognize signs that Kutcher’s character has become smitten with her friend.” We doubt it took much effort on her part; she probably just had to check out his Twitter. [Variety]

Irons in Hood: Max Irons, Jeremy’s son, has been added to the cast of The Girl with the Red Riding Hood, the Amanda Seyfried-Shiloh Fernandez action film directed by Catherine Hardwicke. No word yet on who he’ll be playing, but if he’s a villain then he can call up pops (who voiced Scar in The Lion King) for some tips, which would be sort of cute. [Deadline]

Report Finds 33 SEC Employees Watched Porn As Economy Fell Apart

Maybe the Goldman suit was an attempt to distract from this. A SEC investigation obtained by CNN shows that as the country was in the midst of one of the worst financial crises of the past century, the attention of a number of SEC employees was on something else entirely: porn. The investigation summary reveals that 33 SEC employees and contractors - half of whom make upwards of $99,000 - viewed images of a pornographic or sexually suggestive nature during work hours on government computers over the past five years.

Perhaps the most amusing aspect all of this is the politicians who want to sound indignant but are hampered by having to use vague euphemisms. Rep. Darrell Issa, for example, offered this assessment: "It is nothing short of disturbing... Inexplicably, rather than exercise its existing regulatory enforcement authority, SEC officials were preoccupied... with other distractions." Yuck.

American Idiot's Second Night Features Surprise Green Day Performance

Green Day made a surprise appearance at the end of tonight’s performance of American Idiot, after the show opened on Broadway Wednesday night. The band took the stage with the show's full cast, as some performers channeled their inner fanboys and took videos of themselves onstage with the band, while one cast member attempted to crowd surf. After beginning the encore set with “American Idiot,” the group went on to play “Basket Case,” which isn’t included in the musical. Considering the mixed reviews the show received, the producers probably are wishing the band would close out the show every night. [Arts Beat/NYT]

Green Hornet Release Bumped Three Weeks

After reports out earlier this week that Sony wasn’t pleased with the final cut of Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet, starring the unlikely trio of Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz, Deadline is reporting that the film's release date has been pushed back three weeks from its cushy Christmas slot of December 22 to Martin Luther King weekend’s January 14. The official reason for the delay is that additional time is needed to implement the film's “3D enhancements," which does actually make some sense considering Gondry's reported desire to shoot the film's fight scenes using construction paper. Plan for 34th Street Will Create 'Pedestrian Plaza'

The Bloomberg administration is making even more progress in arguably its most effective effort - its crusade for the city’s pedestrians - with ambitious plans for creating an automobile-free zone on 34th Street similar to the one implemented in Times Square. The plan is to create a “pedestrian plaza bookended by Herald Square and the Empire State Building,” which would be achieved by banning automobiles on the block of 34th Street between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas.

Crosstown bus routes will not be affected by the plan, as the proposal calls for an “experimental bus lane” through the pedestrian plaza, allowing buses to operate in both directions - and, in fact, the idea is that the notoriously slow crosstown bus system will be sped up. Though the 34th Street plan - which was initially proposed in 2008 - has now been accelerated, you can expect the usual mess of traffic and tourists when you have to trek to Macy's to return something for the next few years: the final design plans aren’t due until the fall of 2011, with the street not ready for use until the end of 2012.

Roman Polanski’s bid to be sentenced in absentia for his child sex case was denied by a California appeals court today, clearing the way for the fugitive director to be extradited back to the United States. With the dismissal of this appeal, Los Angeles prosecutors can now move closer to a sentencing of the director for the decades-old case; Swiss officials had said they were waiting for this ruling before deciding whether or not to extradite Polankski, currently under house arrest in Switzerland. Former NY1 Reporter's Sexual Harrassment Suit Rejected

After deliberating for just 40 minutes, a Brooklyn jury has rejected the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former NY1 reporter Adele Sammarco. Sammarco - who claimed she was the victim of inappropriate sex jokes and other forms of harassment (including an unwanted kiss from fellow reporter Gary Ramsey) and that she was fired in 2001 after she spoke up - had sued Time Warner and three of NY1’s executives for unspecified damages. Sammarco, 43, also might have some trouble finding another reporting gig thanks to this trial: NY1’s lawyer said on the stand the actual reason Sammarco was fired was that she lacked “ability and talent.” [NYP, NYDN]

Stewart Is Reportedly Wanted To Take Over For Jolie

E! News is reporting that the team behind the sequel to the James McAvoy-Angelina Jolie hit Wanted have set their sights on a surprising replacement for Jolie, who has backed out of the second film: Twilight’s Kristen Stewart. Though nothing is official, Stewart has reportedly met with the director of the series and would play a young assassin in the Fraternity, the secret group of which Jolie’s character was a part. The two actresses have more in common than you might think: Jolie and Stewart both have engaged in romances with high-profile costars; they’re both cool with being around blood (either in a vial as a gift, or as a byproduct of dating a vampire); and, of course, they both have six children. Blagojevich Looking To Subpoena The President

In news that is sure to just delight President Obama, lawyers for Rod Blagojevich, the indicted former Illinois governor, would like to subpoena the president to testify in Blagojevich’s corruption trial, which will begin this June. The lawyers argued in a motion filed today that Obama, alone, can shed light on the primary accusation levied against Blago - that he solicited gifts in exchange for an appointment to the seat left vacant by Obama when he was elected president.

According to the Times, the filing issued by the defense indicates Obama was “more tangled in the discussions over who would fill his senate seat than has previously been suggested.”

"In the motion, Mr. Blagojevich’s lawyers seem to suggest that the president himself could point up contradictions in the testimony about whether he had sent 'emissaries' to Mr. Blagojevich with regard to who the White House would prefer fill the Senate seat."

Neither the White House nor the Chicago federal prosecutor’s office has commented on the request.

Are Lederhosen the New Jeggings? Say It Ain’t So.

If you thought jeggings couldn't be topped as the worst hybrid garment, think again. It seems that leather shorts are supposedly, despite their sweat-inducing qualities and overall cringeworthy-ness, the next big thing for spring.

The Wall Street Journal says that these shorts, which it likens to lederhosen (minus the front flaps and suspenders), have gained momentum after being worn by Rihanna and Miley Cyrus and popping up on the spring runways at Chloé, YSL, Emilio Pucci, Alice + Olivia, and The Row, which has a $1,100 pair that Bergdorf is naming its “key item” of the season.

And that alone wouldn’t be such a big deal. After all, not all ridiculous trends end up trickling down to the masses.

Then, to our dismay, we read that Zara is carrying a paper-bag–waist version with a relatively affordable price tag of $99.99, and now we fear pleather versions at Forever 21 and H&M are not far away.

"It's like a leather jacket," says Ikram Goldman, owner of MObama’s favorite Chicago shop, of the item.

Except not really, because leather and jackets, both cool-weather staples, go together perfectly, whereas leather and shorts don't.

While the article points out that designers are excited about this trend because they have finally created something that women don’t have in their closets, we’d like to point out that there’s an obvious reason for that.

Leaked: The Gaslight Anthem Are Still Catchy, Still Sad

The Gaslight Anthem, American Slang

Official release date: June 15

The Verdict: A good week for leaks continues today with the Gaslight Anthem’s third studio album, American Slang, hitting the file-sharing circuit. Gaslight fans will find it instantly recognizable, in a good, comforting, big-catchy-cleaned-up-punk-riffs and heartfelt-but-at-times-extremely-corny sing-along choruses kind of way. Everyone else will perhaps soon be forming their own opinions, as we can imagine the push from the Slang press rounds might well shove the New Jersey rockers toward mass exposure. The bad news? We’re a little concerned about front man Brian Fallon: Seemingly more so than ever before, Fallon’s obsessed with regrets, lost friends, broken hearts, missed opportunities, and just the general state of things plum done gone wrong (the chorus on “Old Haunts” goes “don’t sing me your songs about the good times/those days are gone and you should just let them go.”) Cheer up, Brian! You’re a young man who fronts a popular rock band about to release a great new album! Maybe your next album can have a song about how well you’ve stayed in touch with your buddies from grade school or something?

When we caught up with Martha Stewart on opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival this week, we wondered if she heard any crazy stories about the erupting volcanoes in Iceland. "None good," she told us. "I have a lot of friends in Iceland I haven’t heard from. Do you know the president’s wife, Dorrit [Moussaieff]? It’s been days and I’ve had no word. I’m sure they’re fine, but there’s so much ash. And I feel terrible for all those poor ponies who are stuck there. They can’t breathe!" See Robert De Niro, Jerry Seinfeld, and more in the Party Lines slideshow.

The New Bloomberg Businessweek: More Color, More Pages, and Soon, More Celebrity Writers

We just got our hands on a copy of the new Bloomberg Businessweek, and the redesign, at first glance, looks pretty substantial. The magazine is bigger, more thoughtfully organized, and does have a different look to it: but it's not an entirely different title than the one you know. It's still sort of the same outfit as the old Business Week, with the sleeves let out to compensate for the size of Bloomberg's bulging reporting and financial muscles. Here's what's new:

The sections: Everything before the feature well is divided into six color-coded sections (and there's a helpful index page which will lead you to key terms throughout the issue). The "Opening Remarks" section, which Josh Tyrangiel explains in his editor's letter is "a richly reported essay on one of the week's most important stories" (this week it's on Goldman Sachs and how it won't be cowed by the "theater of aggressive reform" in Washington), will likely be the cover piece from time to time.

Then the rest of the short, Economist-style pieces are divided into sections called "Global Economics," "Policy & Politics," "Markets & Finance," "Companies & Industries," "Technology," and "Enterprise." These are almost entirely supplied by Bloomberg's massive host of reporters. The feature well looks pretty similar, though deeper (and it's set to expand), and there's a new "Etc" section in the rear that features more lighthearted workplace and consumer pieces.

The Staff: Looks like Tyrangiel has beefed up his staff with a number of contributors from the now-defunct Portfolio. We spotted Sheelah Kolhatkar's name on the masthead, and Karl Taro Greenfield's byline in the feature well, as well as a column by Michael Lewis — who is among the first in a wave of high-profile writers we hear the magazine is courting. But the Journal reports that as of now, there are only three full-time staff writers based here in New York.

The Look: First things first, the cover now has "Bloomberg Businessweek" on it in all the same size font, with teaser boxes across the top of the page. Inside, there's more color and a lot of text — though the layout is slightly different, at least that feels somewhat the same between the two versions. Creative director Richard Turley came onboard from the Guardian and the use of color and sense of momentum will ring a bell to readers of the London paper. There are also surprises littered through the text, like tiny "Bottom Line" summaries at the end of dense news items.

The Size: It's bigger. According to The Wall Street Journal, there will be a minimum 66 news pages each issue, where there used to be about 55. As a result, combined with increased ad pages, the magazine feels significantly heftier.

Woody Allen Names a Movie Early for Once

In a break from standard protocol, Woody Allen has revealed the name and details of an upcoming project before its completion. The director's Midnight in Paris will star Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Carla Bruni and center on "a family traveling to the city for business, including a young engaged couple that has their lives transformed throughout the journey. The film celebrates a young man's great love for Paris, and simultaneously explores the illusion people have that a life different from their own is better." As you know, Woody typically waits to see the finished product before giving it a name — if it's good, he'll give it an attention-getting title; if it's bad, a less flashy one — so he must have either felt confident about Paris's potential (pretty bold name, we think) or just stopped giving a crap altogether. Either way, this one sounds okay to us.

Mickey Rourke to Play Dog-Loving Genghis Khan?

Cross your fingers that this one happens: Mickey Rourke says he's hoping to star as Genghis Khan, because, among other reasons, Khan dug canines. "One of the things I like about Genghis Khan was his love of dogs," the chihuahua lover told the Orlando Sentinel. "The Mongols used dogs in battle, and dogs rarely made it out of the battle. But in one instance, in this script, he orders his men — ‘Hold the dogs back.’ He was looking out for the dogs. I like that.” [Wrap]

Mayor Bloomberg Insists Tax Loophole Is Fine Because Cayman Islands People Are Nice

Things got a little awkward today as the press continued to question Mayor Bloomberg on his foundation's practice of routing its money through overseas tax havens. First, one reporter asked how Bloomberg can't know about this stuff when he signed the tax forms. Bloomberg insisted he'd never done such a thing, then upon being told that he had, he admitted, "If there are tax forms that I signed, I signed." Well, there are. But Hizzoner also defended himself by pointing out that business is global now, and besides, "people in the Cayman Islands are very nice people," so it's okay. [Daily Politics/NYDN]

Should There Be a New York Menswear Fashion Week? Michael Bastian Thinks So, CFDA Is Iffy

Thom Browne's Spring 2010 collection, shown in New York.

With the American menswear market absolutely exploding over the last five years, it’s getting both designers and industry types scratching their heads as to whether New York should show a little patriotism and host its own menswear Fashion Week.

WWD explored the matter, explaining that the common reasoning in favor of a New York–based week, separate from the women's schedule, involves the time lapse between Europe's spring men's shows in late June and the Americans showing both men's and women's in September, which makes it difficult for menswear designers that stayed back home to make the deadline for European sales.

“What ends up happening is selling shuts down in August, then we show, and a lot of accounts come back and want to add things that came down the runway, and it’s actually too late,” explains Michael Bastian, who shows Stateside, but also has production in Italy, which makes things a bit easier. “So we do pay a price.”

At the same time, Bastian, a former fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman, says he’s staying put, headache or not.

“I feel New York is the right context for what I’m doing. I’m resolute that I will stay here. Whatever effect it has on my business, I accept,” he says. “I think it’s important to stand up and be part of New York. What I’m doing should be seen in the context of others with this American point of view. It would be weird to show between Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli— that ’s another planet.”

That “planet,” however, is one that many American designers are willing to inhabit, including Adam Kimmel, who shows in Paris, John Varvatos, who has shown in Milan for three seasons, Marc Jacobs, who is rumored to start showing a menswear collection in Milan, and Thom Browne, who shows his two collections for Moncler in Italy and will move his namesake show to Paris this June.

“Again, unless there’s a real demand for it, it would be a difficult thing to build, because you wouldn’t be guaranteed the right designers would participate,” Steven Kolb, the executive director of the CFDA, explains to WWD. “How would you layer marquee names with the emerging designers so it’s fully representative? That’s been the challenge.”

Although, we think, a challenge worth fighting. While the majority of American menswear designers still show in New York (over 50 showed this past fashion week, including biggies like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein), the news of major tastemakers in the men's market like Marc Jacobs and Thom Browne fleeing for Europe is a little troubling.

And with the depth of talent working so hard to put the U.S. on the map — think Robert Gellar, Patrik Ervell, Richard Chai, Band of Outsiders, Shipley & Halmos, Victor Glemaud, etc. — it's only right to reward them with something they can call their own.

So, what do you think: Does a New York Men's Fashion Week make sense?

Journalist Expects Lloyd Blankfein to Just Open Up to Him Right Away

This morning at Cooper Union, the Guardian's business correspondent, Andrew Clark, ran into and attempted to engage Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, without much success. Here's how it went down.

Walking alongside him, I asked: "Mr Blankfein, has your company done anything wrong?"

The Goldman boss was having none of it, striding onward without a sound. I tried again: "Mr Blankfein, what do you think of the SEC's charges against your company?"

Still no response.

Well no wonder. Clearly, the guy's game was entirely off. You can't just come at the CEO of the biggest and most fearsome financial company in the world with an attack. He needs to be coaxed. Maybe with a small treat, or a little scratch behind the ears. Andrew Ross Sorkin knows what we're talking about. So we thought we'd reach out to Clark, you know, journalist to "journalist," to suggest that maybe he should have tried a different approach.

Did it not occur to you to hug Lloyd? To try cracking his hard veneer with love instead of anger? Because I think that might've worked.

Subject: Re: my question is this

Not sure how Lloyd would have reacted to that. There were many jumpy White House secret servicemen around and I didn't want to risk a fracas.

Meh, wimp. This kind of thinking is precisely why the British don't have an empire anymore.

Katy Perry’s Hemline Goes Both Ways

At the annual American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers awards in Hollywood last night, Katy Perry wore a dress by Manish Arora. Hillary Clinton Would Still Really Rather Skype

Nobody, except freaks, actually likes flying. But Hillary Clinton really doesn't like flying. We can tell, because whenever she talks about the downsides of her job as secretary of State, she doesn't mention "We can't stop Iran from getting the bomb" or "Afghanistan is a quagmire" or "The Israelis and the Palestinians are hopeless." She mentions air travel. In fact, she can nearly recite her gripe by memory at this point. From Newsweek last December:

What I have found hardest to balance is the amount of travel that is expected today. One would think that in an era where communication is instantaneous, you would not have to get on an airplane and go sit in a meeting. But, in fact, it's almost as though people are more desirous of seeing someone in person.

That's very close to what she recently told Esquire, save for an added poignant and slightly unintelligible observation about the human condition:

"It wears you out," Clinton told Esquire in a story for the May issue of the magazine. 'The jet lag, the dry air on planes, the whole 'If it's Tuesday, I must be in...' kind of thing.'" ....

"But you would think, in the world in which we live today, that with instantaneous communications, that you wouldn't need to travel as much."

"But, in fact," Clinton explained, "you almost have to travel more, both because everybody knows you can get on an airplane and get to where they're expecting you, but also because it's almost as if the virtual reality cries out for the real relationships need to be affirmed."

Not Hillary, though. Unlike the diplomatic lightweights around the world who relish the chance to meet such a high-profile political celebrity in person, Hillary does not cry out for the warmth of face-to-face interaction. She just wants some freaking couch time.

Madonna Shoots Dolce & Gabbana Campaign in Harlem With Another Inappropriately Younger Man

Earlier this week, spies spotted the makings of Dolce & Gabbana’s fall 2010 menswear ads being shot in a bar in Little Italy. Now, it seems the crew has moved uptown — to Harlem, in fact — to shoot Madonna for what Stefano Gabbana has confirmed on Twitter is the long-rumored fall womenswear campaign!

Paparazzi swarming the shoot captured Madge strolling the streets, locking elbows with and cuddling up to a much younger man — most likely around the same age as Madonna's on-again-off-again 23-year-old boyfriend, Jesus Luz — who carries a few nets full of onions (how very Italiano of him!).

This new campaign is a slight variation from the spring 2010 ads, in which Madonna played a sexy Italian housewife, unconvincingly sweeping floors, washing dishes, cutting tomatoes, and eating spaghetti while dressed to the nines in Dolce.

This season’s ads have her sporting the same cleavage-enhancing necklines and cross necklace from last season, albeit all in a more urbane setting.

In any case, we think this cougar thing is getting a little out of hand. This kid is clearly in his 20s, he's a studly model, and we know what happened the last time those components mixed with Madonna. Jesus, come get your girl.

Hitler Would Like You To Stop Making Hitler Reaction Videos

When we first heard the news earlier this week that Constantin Films, the studio behind the German-language WWII film Downfall, was working with YouTube to shut down the scores of “Hitler Reacts To” videos that have sprouted up online, we here at BWE.tv breathed a sigh of relief, thinking we’d finally be able to put one of the internet’s most annoying memes comfortably in the rear view mirror. Sadly, yet expectedly, this news only resulted in more Hitler reaction videos sprouting up.

In response, our crack video guru, Mr. Pete Schultz, put together the following video, one that we’re hoping will be the final nail in the “Hitler Reacts To” meme coffin. Danke schoen.

Times Pushes Overalls Trend

Overalls at the Diesel Black Gold fall 2010 runway show.

Today, the New York Times put its chips down on overalls. It's true that designer variations of OshKosh B'Gosh for grownups are becoming hard to ignore. We spotted Jesse James in a pair several weeks ago, Katie Holmes went shopping in some recently, and Magdalena Frackowiak rocked Ralph Lauren's version on the cover of Russian Vogue in February. Jean Paul Gaultier also showed some made of crocodile skin during Couture Week, while Diesel Black Gold featured them on the fall runway. Okay, but what does it all mean? The Times falls back on that old standby of trend-parsers everywhere, the economy: "Perhaps recession solidarity is behind overalls percolating on the street and trickling down from the runway." Fug Girls: Predicting Tonight’s Project Runway Winner

From left: Looks from Emilio, Seth Aaron, and Mila

When it comes to picking the Project Runway winner, we're on a bit of a hot streak, but that could easily come to an end during tonight's season-seven finale. Sure, we've got our guesses as to who will emerge victorious — Seth Aaron, Mila, or Emilio — but we're way less invested in that than we are in whether Tim will deliver a bracing bitch slap to Emilio, whom he appears to dislike with a fervor usually reserved for Crocs. We suspect that Our Lord of Erudition is too classy to get out his claws, so here's hoping the odds we're about to lay on the contestants' chances are more accurate than our daydreams. (Warning: If you aren't planning to peek at the finale collections yet, look away! This contains spoilers.)

Seth Aaron Henderson: 3 to 1.
Though parts of Seth Aaron's collection remind us faintly of Jeffery Sebelia's winning looks from 2007 — with a hint of Gwen Stefani's Plaid Period tossed in for good measure — his clothes are beautifully constructed, and his work in black and white feels younger and more modern than Mila's does. We must admit that we're not sure what the deal is with the proportions on some of his dresses and we're super tired of people showing latex leggings as tights, but Seth Aaron's collection boasts something valuable the others lack: It actually looks like it'd be fun to wear.
View Seth Aaron's complete collection.

Mila Hermanovski: 6 to 1.
Mila's retro aesthetic sometimes seems like less of a signature than a crutch, but frankly, it's tough for any designer to get this far without SOME discernible trademark. That said, to us, Mila's line veers toward being too familiar and even a tad stodgy, with some pieces resembling a theoretical Narciso Rodriguez for Talbots collection, and others looking like forgettable, incidental items in an ad for tights designed by Lindsay Lohan. And her only foray into color, while a lovely enough hue, seems perfunctory, with the whole effect being as if her model's boobs are in traction. Still, the judges loved the pieces they previewed when advancing Mila into the finals and didn't even seem to think the fingerless gloves looked desperate. Can't say we agree, but hey, maybe fingertips are the new black this year.
View Mila's complete collection.

Emilio Sosa: 10 to 1.
It's hard to be unbiased here. We still feel like Emilio should have been auf'ed for that insane, hideous bathing suit he made from metal washers and hot pink twine back in episode seven. Also: Emilio is so dismissive of and jerky to Tim, which makes us root against him automatically. However, we do have legitimate reasons for thinking he's unlikely to win. His collection's royal-blue-and-red color palette is nearly identical to the color story Rami Kashou showed several seasons ago, for which he was raked over the coals by the judges. Worse, Emilio's clothes are kind of snoresville: perfectly acceptable for something you'd buy at Macy's for a last-minute job interview, but lacking the creative verve you'd expect to see in a winning collection. Also, what's with the prints he makes using his own name? You're not Louis Vuitton yet, dude. Maybe try to aim for Christian Siriano first.
View Emilio's complete collection.

On a Mountain of Skulls, In the Castle of Pain, Vigo The Carpathian Lives On

Success. I am the proud owner of my very own Vigo The Carpathian painting. However, I’m sorry to say, it appears that the link has been taken down. I can only pray that you guys took my advice and printed it out before it was too late.

Not moments after I found the link yesterday, upon Michelle’s urging, I went to the 26th floor of the Best Week Ever Spaceship to print Vigo. I opted to print it on canvas to make my Vigo experience more authentic. I used 90 percent of my monthly printing budget. My monthly printing budget is $100. I’ll wait while you use your calculator.

When the nice printing lady saw what I wanted to print she said, “Oh, this famous painting. I’ve printed this out at least ten times in the past month for some guy.” What?? Also, what??? I pressed her for more information, like, who is this person/my soulmate,  but she wasn’t very forthcoming. Apparently there’s a printer-printee relationship similar to a doctor-patient one. Then she gave me a check up.

THEN an hour later when I went to pick Vigo up (it takes a while to print a 24×36 inch  hi-res image onto canvas) two dudes were there, saw my painting and said, “That’s exactly what we were going to print just now!” What in the world?! Has Vigo possessed us all, completing his intended task? Are we just all on the same Ghostbusters 2 page? Is this what Jung meant by the collective unconscious? Did I just unnecessarily drop a pretentious reference? Can I do whatever I please because I’m the one with the Vigo painting? Either way, Michelle is going to frame it and hang it in her apartment. But for now, we’re enjoying it here.

Instead, she’ll be judging a chic fashion-film competition, alongside famously black-clad fashion writer Diane Pernet from a Shaded View on Fashion.

The contest, dubbed A Shaded View on Fashion Film 2010, is hosted by TalentHouse.com and open to all makers of fashion-, beauty-, and style-themed films of varying length. The winner will get to have his or her film screened at what will be the fourth annual a Shaded View on Fashion Film event next year.

So what do filmmakers have to do to get past the discerning eye of Tavi?

“There has to be a strong concept — it can't just be about looking at how shiny and pretty the clothes and models are because to me that feels like a TV commercial,” Tavi tells British Vogue. "There are some specific aesthetics I am really into, but the most important thing is that they have something to say and meet their goal in projecting a message."

Submissions must be received by July 15 and will be shortlisted by a public vote from July 20–23. After Tavi and Pernet make their final decision, a winner will be announced August 12.

In other news, Tavi celebrated her birthday on her blog today by posting a naked picture of Maggie Rizer surrounded by balloons from 1998, which was only two years after Tavi was born.

God, we're old.

Oh Sheep Pig, You So Crazy.

Editor’s Note: Last night, after a long hard day of blogging, I returned home to find that the term “Sheep Pig” was the number 1 search term on Yahoo.com. “Sheep Pig,” as in “Look at that them there sheep pigs!” I proceeded to watch a video about “sheep pigs,” which told me that 3 new sheep pigs were sent to a zoo in England. That’s all well and good, but something irked me deeply. This Sheep Pig… I had seen him before.

So I took to the trusty Google to find out why this Sheep Pig seemed to be hoofing his way deep into my past.

And then I found it.

What follows is a blog post written almost exactly one year ago. It features my thoughts on the original sheep pig, not to mention a pretty special Sheep Pig photoshop by yours truly. Please note that my feelings on Sheep Pig have not changed in the 12 months that have followed.

Would it be wrong of me to say this Sheep/Pig hybrid, who we have adoringly named Sheeppig, is almost a little sexy?

SHEEPPIG-1.jpg

Do you not see it? Maybe a little Sheeppig photoshopping will help…

The f*ck me heels, the long, shapely legs, the luxurious bounce to his sheep curl… Admit it, Sheeppig is kind of hot:

SHEEPPIG-2.jpg

Come on now — This Sheeppig gives you a case of the ol’ Swine Flus… of the crotch. (No? Sorry.)

The real travesty here is that she sold for under $400, which seems like a regular damn bargain if you ask me:

SHEEPPIG-3.jpg

By the way, she has a name…. it’s Elizabeth. But according to Stephen over at Urlesque, she looks less like an Elizabeth and more like a Scott:

The XX Make Me DiZZy

This is basically just a post to introduce anyone who hasn’t heard of the band the xx to…the xx.  What, have you been living under a ROCK where they don’t have what the kidz listen to with the jazz music and such? Anyway, they’re young and talented and British and all that. Their new video for the song “Islands” came out the other day, and if you’re the type of person who loved/loves the teacup ride or the one where the floor drops out and you’re stuck to the wall spinning around and around and around then you’ll like this. If you’re like me and HATED those rides, you’ll likely be dizzy. But it’s a great song! Do watch! Cheerio!

What Caused This Healthy Dog To End Up In A Flowery Wheelchair?

Aww, what’re you doing in that flowery wheelchair, little pup?

The disturbing truth, after the jump:

Oh. It’s a perfectly healthy dog that played an injured dog in The Backup Plan, and Jennifer Lopez is dragging it along the red carpet in a flower-filled wheelchair to promote said mid-April throwaway romantic comedy.

I actually now feel worse for that dog than I did when I thought it was missing its legs.
