Last Night on Late Night: Donald Glover Describes Working For Tracy Morgan

Late-night fans know that anyone who has worked in a proximity to Tracy Morgan is required by law to tell a story about him but last night Community's Donald Glover had a fresh angle to his story: Tracy Morgan as your boss. Glover was hired as a writer for 30 Rock out of college and, according to him, the Morgan nonsequitors started on day one. On his show, Craig Ferguson dipped into another popular joke pool, and on The Colbert Report, Michelle Obama's brother Craig Robinson was forced to confront his eerie resemblance to the first lady (he was there to promote his book A Game of Character). Finally, David Letterman brought some much-needed perspective to the hullabaloo over the new iPhone, though it was the topic of his Top Ten. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Kate Bosworth and Leslie Mann Say Goodnight

Full Moon: Kate Bosworth and Leslie Mann have signed on to Goodnight Moon, a semi-autobiographical drama from Elgin James, the writer-director who formed a Boston area street gang before eventually ending up at Sundance Labs. Juno Temple and AnnaSophia Robb play young girls who run away to Los Angeles to “hook up with skaters and street kids” in the film. Mann will play Temple’s mom, who “works in a secondhand clothing store but whose best years are behind her,” and Bosworth will play Mann’s sister. Maybe it's just us, but we're thinking they may want to consider a title change here to avoid moms with tykes expecting an animated children's tale getting a rude, street gang surprise. [HR]

Snowfall: Brittany Snow (Hairspray, American Dreams) has nabbed the lead role in the upcoming indie drama 96 Minutes. The film focuses on two high school students who must “prove their toughness by committing a hijacking” in order to be allowed in to a gang. Snow will play a college student who would rather stay in and study than party, which - if we've learned anything from Hollywood - means Snow will spend the bulk of this film in glasses with her hair up. [Variety]

Invite Only: 50 Cent will head out on The Invitation Tour, a month-long outing that will begin on May 28 and include 19 shows in mid-size theaters across the country. His upcoming album, Black Magic, does not yet have a release date, though he has described the sound as "experimental" and "out of the box." And considering a lot of the venues are blues houses, we're hoping this means Fiddy will be breaking out some jazz piano. [MTV]

Duo Goes Giant: Writer Christopher McQuarrie and director Bryan Singer, who teamed up for The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, will join forces yet again for Jack the Giant Killer. McQuarrie is writing a draft of the fantasy adventure about a kidnapped princess at the center of a war between men and giants. The story follows a young farmer who is charged with leading a dangerous journey into the giants’ kingdom to rescue the princess. And good news, Jack, the title of your movie indicates things are probably going to go pretty well for you. [Heat Vision/HR]

Assignment Underway: Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore will star in the teen romance Homework, joining a cast that already includes Alicia Silverstone, Blair Underwood and Rita Wilson. The story follows a slacker high school student (Highmore) and a girl he’s loved from afar (Roberts) who “strike up an unexpected friendship,” which we’re assuming means she’s going to help him shape up and get into the college he never realized was meant for him, while he will teach her how to loosen up and be totally spontaneous. [Variety]

Hold On: The Hold Steady - whose new album, Heaven Is Whenever, is out May 4 - will be heading out on the road, making stops at venues across North America and Europe this summer. But you can get a head start on memorizing all the new lyrics and really impressing all your friends, as the album's already streaming online. [Pitchfork]

Enos Fit For Killing: Mireille Enos (Big Love) has scored the lead in the AMC drama pilot The Killing. The series is centered on the murder of a young girl and the subsequent police investigation, and Enos will play the lead homicide detective looking into the murder. After playing the oppressed twins Kathy and Jodean Marquart on Big Love, this role should seem downright cheery for Enos. [Deadline]

Kapur Takes On Everest: Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth) has signed on to direct a biopic of George Mallory, the famed English explorer who climbed Mt. Everest, with Julia Roberts attached as one of the producers. Mallory famously said “because it’s there” when asked why he wanted to climb the mountain; similarly, asked why he's directing this movie, Kapur said "because Julia Roberts is producing it." Maddow Mocks Supreme Court's Lack of Tech Savvy Via Puppetry

Whoever Obama nominates to fill the vacant Supreme Court seat, it would appear if he or she has even a rudimentary understanding of how text messages and e-mails work, the justice will have a significant leg up on his or her peers. Earlier this week, during a case examining whether or not a California police department violated the rights of an employee when it inspected personal texts sent and received on the individual’s pager, the justices revealed a serious lack of understanding of, well, pretty much all aspects of technology.

It began with John Roberts asking for an explanation of the difference between an e-mail and a pager (seriously)... and it devolved from there. On her show tonight, Rachel Maddow turned to finger puppets to help her lampoon the proceedings.

Arizona Apparently Still Not Convinced About Obama's Birthplace

After several months of relative silence, the birthers are back, baby, and they mean business. The state House in Arizona has approved a bill that would require President Obama to show his birth certificate if he plans to run for re-election in the state; the proposal passed by a 31-29 margin and now will move on to the state Senate. According to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, only 58 percent of Americans said they were convinced Obama was born in the U.S. Despite the fact that a scanned image of his birth certificate was released in 2008, 20 percent of the poll’s respondents still believe the president was born in another country. Progress Made As Senate Committee Passes Derivatives Reform Bill

A proposal aiming to impose regulations on Wall Street’s complex derivatives system was approved by a Senate committee today, in hopes it will help to protect the economy from future collapses and taxpayers from the possibility of further bailouts. The bill passed by a 13-8 vote of the Senate Agriculture Committee (Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley was the sole Republican to vote with the Democrats in support of the proposal), and will now likely be merged with the financial regulations reform bill that will be debated by the full chamber. Sandra Bullock Asked to Return Her Razzie

Despite the fact that she got the Razzies arguably more press this year than they’ve ever received, Sandra Bullock has been targeted by the Golden Raspberry organizers. Apparently when Bullock arrived in person to accept her Worst Actress award last month, she accidentally took home the “prototype Razzie” instead of one of the five-dollar knockoffs the winners are supposed to get. Today, Bullock’s publicist issued a statement that, after the story leaked, she contacted the Razzies and was “told we had been given the wrong award.” She said they will be "returning the Razzie to them shortly." Well now that this is cleared up, we're sure Bullock has no worries remaining in her life at all. [E!]

Metro-North 'Bar Cars' Could Become Thing of the Past

The Metro-North Railroad line that runs from Grand Central Terminal to Connecticut is undergoing an overhaul that could mean the end of one of commuters’ most cherished havens: the bar car. Because of limited funds, railroad officials have said they can not promise that the new fleet of trains (which will replace the "1970s-era models") will feature bar cars, wood-paneled cars where commuters can purchase alcohol. They have already been fully phased out on the Long Island Rail Road and on many Metro-North trains to Westchester County, but that precedent is unlikely to mean much to dismayed Connecticut commuters: “The commute is so bad as it is,” financial worker Paul Hornung told the Times. “This is the one thing you can look forward to.”

Glee and Madonna May Join Forces Yet Again

On the chance that you didn’t get enough Madonna on last night’s Glee (there is no chance of this), it appears the hot Fox show will be teaming up with the Material Girl again come this fall. Show creator Ryan Murphy is in talks with Madonna’s camp to feature six more of the icon’s songs for an episode in the show's second season this fall, EW is reporting. It's rumored that fans will be able to vote on which of Madge’s songs will be included in the follow-up.

No doubt impressed by all the buzz Madonna has received from her partnership with Glee, Britney Spears appears to be angling for a similar all-Spears episode, as her manager attempted to rally fans this afternoon, urging them to tweet “#BritneyonGLEE” (which eventually became a "trending topic"). Quinn chastising Puck’s “Womanizer” ways? A Principal Figgins-Sue Sylvester "Toxic" duet ("he took a sip / from her devil's cup")? An ensemble "... Baby One More Time" in proper attire? As long as they spare us Rachel wailing "I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet a Woman," we're on board.

Ed Cox Admits It's 'Possible' Steve Levy Won't Get Enough Votes

State Republican chairman Ed Cox has publicly expressed his doubts that his hand-picked gubernatorial candidate, the impressively mustachioed Steve Levy, will get the necessary 50 percent of votes at this June’s Republican convention to earn a spot on the ballot. He responded to a reporter’s question at a Republican women’s conference by stating, “It is possible that [Levy] won't get 50.1 percent.”

This lack of confidence comes at a time when, the Post reports, “even some Republicans sympathetic to Levy are privately worrying his momentum seems stalled.” Cox’s camp has tried to downplay the comment since, claiming that - even though most calculations have Levy earning only about an estimated 25 percent of votes - the chairman still has “confidence that Levy will get 50 plus 1 percent.” Though considering the fact that Levy was a Democrat as of a month ago (not to mention that unfortunate “terrorist” Halloween costume pic), it probably wouldn't hurt for Cox to start making that confidence a bit more obvious.

Celebrity Volcano Slam Poetry!

Last night at Lincoln Center, literate celebs like Meryl Streep, Sting, and Gabriel Byrne regaled an audience by reading poems at "Poetry & the Creative Mind,” the eighth annual benefit for the Academy of American Poets. We caught up with Sting backstage and asked him to freestyle a poem about the volcano in Iceland that brought air traffic to a halt in Europe. He didn’t miss a beat:

Ash, ash
No cash
Less trash
Where’s my wife?

Turns out, wife Trudie Styer wasn’t standing so close to him — she’s stranded in London. “I’m in a lovely place and so is she, but we’re not together,” he said in between bites of pineapple. “That was the meaning of my poem — my rather terrible poem. It’s interesting that Mother Nature would throw something up to show us we’re not in charge.” But Sting’s keeping his cool (must be all that yoga). He says people should be “philosophical” about travel setbacks. “I was once stranded in a town in Japan called Fukuoka,” he said with a laugh. “You know that town? It’s aptly named.” He came down with a nasty bug and couldn’t leave his hotel for a month: “I vowed I would never come back. A year later I was back performing.”

But Sting wasn't the only celebrity in attendance we forced to improvise poems about the volcano. Here are the rest!

Two years of ash
And not a bird in the sky
Only the ones
that you can eat inside
Matt Dillon

Who could have predicted you
White cloud of ash
Full of beauty and of terror
A reminder to us
That we do not own
the universe surrounding us
Gabriel Byrne

Grim and dark
The ash cloud
So many stranded
Boats in the harbor
Cloud settles
Send in the Navy

Keep Bartering That Chicken, Sue Lowden

Apologies in advance for the high volume of Nevada-related stories today, but this couldn't be passed up. A couple of weeks ago, a video made the rounds online of Republican Senate candidate Sue Lowden suggesting that one way to deal with soaring health-care costs is to barter with your doctor. Predictable laughter from political bloggers ensued. But then a strange thing happened. The Lowden campaign didn't backtrack. It didn't claim the line was taken out of context — a tactic often used whether or not it has any credibility at all. It didn't claim she'd misspoken (some suspected she simply meant "haggle"). Instead, it doubled down.

Speaking to a local newspaper yesterday, Lowden said:

"I'm telling you that this works. You know, before we all started having health care, in the olden days, our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor. They would say I'll paint your house," she said. "[That's] what people would do to get health care with their doctors. Doctors are very sympathetic people."

"I'm not backing down from that system," she added.

Hey, if it worked for the Great Depression, it's got to be a good system for right now. But don't just take Sue Lowden's word for it. What about a real doctor, one who has bartered so often that it's clear he'd prefer any payment except money. Luckily, the Lowden campaign found a letter to the editor from one such man, and sent it out to reporters today.

And yes, Mr. Leno [Jay Leno had apparently made a joke about this], I have bartered with patients — for alfalfa hay, a bath tub, yard work and horse shoeing in exchange for my care.

There. Proof. Bartering works. Now how many bales of alfalfa hay will it take to cover our liver transplant, exactly?

Tucks Pads and Stoned Movie Reviews at Vanity Fair’s Tribeca Film Festival Party

The Tribeca Film Festival officially opens tonight with a gala premiere at MoMA for that gritty, low-budget monster flick Shrek 4. Last night, though, was the festival's first real gathering of fancy people: Vanity Fair's annual preopening outdoor cocktail party on the steps of the State Supreme Courthouse. It was a time for bold names to gather, laugh, and pass on rectal-care tips: While we were talking to host Graydon Carter, director Barry Sonnenfeld approached and pressed what looked like a Handi Wipe into Carter’s hand, but it was a Tucks Medicated Pad for hemorrhoid relief. “Take it,” Sonnenfeld said to Carter. “It’s like a romp through a field of daisies on your ass.” Carter, for his part, regifted the wipe as soon as Sonnenfeld walked away. “He does that at every party,” he said with a chuckle.

The rest of the party played out much the same — old friends joking with old friends, and talking little of the film festival they’d ostensibly come to celebrate. Tribeca Film Festival founder Robert De Niro stood against a pillar at the entrance, greeting all those who dared to say hi, including Mayor Bloomberg, Jerry Seinfeld, Martha Stewart, Anna Wintour, Christy Turlington, Brian Williams, Darren Aronofsky, Denis Leary, Tom Freston, Queen Noor of Jordan, Ray Kelly, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Ron Perelman. André Balaz joked that he always loves this party because it’s a chance for most of the guests “to see this beautiful courthouse not in the context of a divorce.” As if to counteract the building’s famously bad mojo, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld didn’t need a marriage ref as we grilled them about movies.

NYM: Today is 4/20, the unofficial day for pot smokers. What movie should one watch while stoned?
Jessica: I can recommend Full Metal Jacket. I know that from experience.
Jerry: What I would recommend is — I don’t do it anymore — but when I was a kid, The Honeymooners. That was my favorite, because of Jackie Gleason. Those wild gestures, they’re just so much bigger than in life. You’re like, ‘Whoa, this guy is crazy!’ [Cracks up.] That’s what I’d recommend.

Patricia Clarkson was one of the few people there with a film to promote, the travel love story Cairo Time, the filming of which had afforded her a magical seven weeks living in the titular city. “Everything was real. When my ass was on the pyramids, my ass was on the pyramids,” she said. “The only thing that wasn’t wonderful was seeing what comes out of a camel, but that’s a conversation for a different time.” John Leguizamo was there as a juror in the Tribeca All Access category, which seeks to find the next great urban filmmaker. Leguizamo gave an impromptu guide to filmmakers on how to win his vote: “[The movie] has to be really fucking funny or really depressing. Like, Precious was really, really depressing and I loved it. Anything else is forgettable. Oh, and I love [documentaries]. I always cry. Did you see The Cove? I dare you not to cry during The Cove, with the cute baby dolphins and the blood. And I cry during anything with kids and health issues. Anything with third-world children, I guarantee I’ll be crying — probably because I fancy myself a third-world child.” The apex, he suggested would be for one of these urban filmmakers to put dolphins and third-world children into their movies. “I don’t know how you’re going to keep a dolphin in the projects, but good luck. If you got that movie, it would win.”

Lane Bryant Says ABC and Fox Didn’t Want to Air Their Lingerie Commercial

Plus-size label Lane Bryant created a commercial for their new Cacique line of lingerie, which the label claims Fox and ABC agreed to air but then didn't really want to. Lane Bryant suggests they have an unfair issue airing images of curvy women in lingerie, while they have no problem with Victoria's Secret's racy ads. The company posted a little rant on their blog, alleging that ABC "restricted our airtime" and refused to air the ad during Dancing With the Stars. Meanwhile Fox, they say, "demanded excessive re-edits and rebuffed it three times before relenting to air it during the final ten minutes of American Idol, but only after we threatened to pull the ad buy."

The post continues:

"Yes, these are the same networks that have scantily-clad housewives so desperate they seduce every man on the block — and don't forget Bart Simpson, who has shown us the moon more often than NASA — all in what they call 'family hour.' ... Does this smack of a double standard? Yep. It does to us, too."

Bryant says the networks had a problem with the cleavage in the ad, which you can watch below. We don't see that it's much different from a Victoria's Secret ad. The girls don't have fans blowing in their faces or vampy shadow effects or sexy jazz hands or aggressive synchronized walks like VS ads do. Sure, they have bigger bosoms. But as far as raciness goes, it doesn't feel more shocking than anything else on TV. The tans and styling on Dancing With the Stars could probably use more toning down than this commercial.

Keira Knightley Doubles Chances of Appearing in an F. Scott Fitzgerald Adaptation

Keira Knightley's face is going to be all over the popular fiction table at Barnes and Noble. The actress — who has already appeared in adaptations of Pride & Prejudice and Ian McEwan's Atonement, and will soon star in adaptations of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go and Claire Messud's The Emperor's Children — is said to bethe front-runner to play the female lead in a film based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night, a novel about a marriage disintegrating in the South of France. Matt Damon (fifteen years Knightley's senior, for those keeping track of age differences we're supposed to ignore at home) is the desired male lead.

As there's only a script and no director attached, it's unlikely both Knightley and Damon will make it into the final project — if the final project gets made at all. (The pair may end up on the next version of this list though!) But between this film and the Fitzgerald biopic The Beautiful and the Damned, which Knightley is attached to star in as Zelda Fitzgerald opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, the actress should get a chance to play a high-strung, mentally unstable woman in an unhealthy relationship with an alcoholic who either is, or is loosely based upon, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Former Gawker Editor-in-Chief Gabriel Snyder Hired to Run Newsweek Website

Just before their latest re-launch, staffers at newsweek.com were informed that they had yet another new leader: former Gawker Editor-in-Chief Gabriel Snyder. Snyder, who was fired seemingly out of the blue from Gawker in a staff shake-up in February, will be executive editor of the site, reporting to Mark Miller — right-hand man to Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, and the recently appointed head of all things digital at the magazine. The website of the storied magazine — which itself went through a major overhaul last year — has undergone several shifts of focus and leadership over the past sixteen months. In January of last year, longtime editor Tom Watson was replaced by outside hire Will Tacy of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune to oversee the website revamp. In June, Tacy was out and Newsweek senior editor Devin Gordon was in. Gordon is out this month and headed to GQ, to be replaced by Snyder under the oversight of Miller.

To: The Staff
From: Jon Meacham and Mark Miller

We are thrilled to announce that Gabriel Snyder, Gawker’s former editor in chief and a journalist with broad experience in print and digital media, is joining us as Executive Editor, Newsweek Digital. Gabriel helped transform Gawker from what was a guilty pleasure for a Manhattan-centric audience to a vibrant source of real news and information, doubling Gawker’s audience. Gabriel also has been a senior writer at W magazine and at Variety where he covered the film industry. A native of Tennessee, Gabriel began his career as a media reporter at The New York Observer after graduating from Yale in 1998.

In our conversations with Gabriel, we have been impressed not only with his sophisticated knowledge of Web technique and Internet philosophy but with his understanding of the mission and potential for the soon-to-be re-launched Newsweek.com and our growing stable of digital offerings. Day in and day out, Newsweek’s digital staff has performed heroically, often in very difficult circumstances. Working with us, Geoff Reiss, Dan Klaidman, Carl Sullivan, Kathy Jones, and the rest of our editorial team, Gabriel will help us ensure that the outstanding journalism we produce every day reaches the biggest, most effective audience.

Gabriel formally begins work on May 3 but will come in soon to meet folks. He will report to Mark Miller. Please join us in welcoming him to Newsweek.

House Ethics Committee to Possibly Uncover More of Eric Massa’s Original Sex Moves

The House Ethics Committee has decided it wants to know more about Eric Massa's unique, sexual-harassment–heavy management style, and is opening "a full and complete investigation." We wish. Alas, because Massa stepped down in a classic disaster of a resignation, the committee doesn't have the authority to look directly into the shenanigans of the salty old sailor anymore. (The Washington Post picked up the slack recently with some more revelations about Massa hitting on a bartender at a soldier's funeral.) But it's still possible that new information could emerge as the Committee focuses instead on what other members of Congress knew and when they knew it, and whether they acted appropriately in response. Specifically, do any of them know what snorkeling is yet?

Just When You Thought Siobhan Magnus Couldn’t Get Any More Annoying…

This happens.

Photos have been released of American Idol contestant Siobhan Magnus from various productions at Barnstable High School in Massachusetts, including The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of Penzance, The Music Man and Beauty and the Beast. We started this season with such high hopes for Siobhan, we really thought she’d be the only saving grace on the show. But week after week, her nasal, grating ways have turned us from fans into cans as in “Cans you please stop singing?” (Genius.)

But whether you love or hate Siobhan, it’s pretty safe to say she looks terrifying in LSD-inspired cat makeup likely done by a high schooler. Speaking of which, is she a millionaire? Or does the dude who did the makeup in Norbit teach at Barnstable? Because some of the work below is astoundingly professional. Unless that actually is Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood

Dan Goldstein, Atlantic Yards’ Last Holdout, Steps Aside for $3 Million

The head of the group that most vocally and effectively fought against Bruce Ratner in his efforts to develop the Atlantic Yards into a stadium and residential and shopping complex, has caved to the developer and agreed to sell his condo. Daniel Goldstein was one of the last seven holdouts in the way of the $4.9 billion dollar project, even though he had technically already been evicted and was being forced to sell by a court ruling upholding the state's right to seize the land under him by eminent domain. As of this morning, he was the only person left living on Pacific Street in Prospect Heights. He confirmed to the Times that he'll receive $3 million for the condo, for which he paid $590,000 in 2003. In exchange for that huge amount, he's also agreed to a "a modified form of the speak-no-evil agreement that Forest City has required of those it buys out." That means he can no longer be spokesman for the group Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn and can no longer stage rallies against the project. But he is, at least, allowed to attend them. When he's not shopping for an awesome new apartment, that is.

Gabourey Sidibe Breaks Precious Stereotype By Pulling Gun on Andy Samberg

While all of you were watching Ryan Phillippe reenact whatever scene it was in Stop Loss when he bombs somewhere, I was far away on the Best Cruise Ever in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. And from what I have read since returning from surf to turf, Ryan should not quit his day job, which I believe officially is cheating on his wife while looking super-male-slutty pouty doll-face at the same time.

Annnnnyway, this coming Saturday is a highly-anticipated episode starring Oscar nominee and subject of much unwanted criticism by a-holes far and wide, star of Precious Gabourey Sidibe. Gaby is a curiosity in Hollywood: Despite her looking like the complete opposite of every.single.actress working these days (including Ryan Phillippe), she’s also super famous after only being in one big movie.

But judging by this promo reel with her and Andy Samberg, she might be really funny! Look! She’s pulling out guns and flirting! Gavel bang and sold. Gaby, put Howard Stern to shame and please do well. SNL writers, do not f**k this girl over.

Iggy & Lou Lou Fashions Porcelain Into Wearable Art

To Irene Grishin-Selzer, the Australian sculptor and designer behind ceramic jewelry line Iggy & Lou Lou, a necklace ought to be more than just an accessory. Her pieces are meant to be worn as amulets and talismans, she says — "like personal treasures and little art objects that express your identity." It's an appropriate philosophy, considering the meticulous nature of her design process. Each limited-edition pendant and charm is hand-printed by Irene and her partner, Peter Selzer, then kiln-fired up to four times to achieve a vintage-looking patina. The pair creates just one collection a year; the most recent, Love Bandits, is darkly romantic, featuring tiny cameras, pistols, intricate masks, and gemstone-studded skulls. This season she collaborated with Karen Walker for her spring 2010 show, creating a series of pendants inked with Walker's "runaway girl" icon. I’ll Stand By Brendan Fraser

The other day my friend Pat texted me and asked, “Does our Brendan Fraser support extend to Furry Vengeance?” To which I replied, “The answer is obviously yes.” I realize that this is not a popular stance. However, similar to the Oasis connection, Pat and I share a deep, unwavering support for Brendan Fraser, whatever his missteps, whatever his faults. Why? How? Love is blind. It just senses a kindred spirit in another and is drawn to it. But believe me. My love for Brendan Fraser has been tested time and time again. Most recently, by Furry Vengeance.

In case you haven’t seen the trailer (weird) here it is:

Yes, I know: He screams “Miley Cyrus” instead of “Holy Effing S” when danger in the form of a boulder appears. But who knows what I’d say if a boulder were rolling towards my car? I’ve never been in that situtaion so I cannot honestly say that I wouldn’t yell “Miley Cyrus.” And then there’s Brooke Shields, you know, falling from bed (lolz). And the animals are basically Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone with their preternatural ability to construct elaborate booby traps.

HOWEVER.

I still hold Brendan Fraser dear. I guess you could chalk it up to nostalgia: Encino Man and School Ties, but why didn’t he lose me with the Mummy franchise, let alone George of the Jungle, Blast from the Past or Bedazzled? Because I’m proud of him. He is a bankable movie star and where other, perhaps better looking actors fail, he suceeds. Yes, on looks, sort of,  but mostly charm. Save for some mis-steps a la Extraordinary Measures (I ask you, who WOULDN’T want to work with Kerri Russell and Harrison Ford?) he’s just been laughing all the way to the bank for a while. And he seems like a nice guy that I want to laugh with. Like, he doesn’t take himself too seriously (obviously) and he doesn’t care what’s fashionable or hip, he just wants to make a fun romp of a family movie and sometimes venture into some more serious God and Monsters-y territory when he feels so inclined. Admittedly, I will not see Furry Vengeance. Although, who knows where a lonely Friday night will take me. I haven’t seen a lot of his movies. But I love that other people do. And if there’s someone I wish all the best to, it’s my bf, BF.

I feel almost compelled to write a disclaimer that the views in this post are not indicative of everyone here at BWE, let alone any one at all, save me and my friend Pat.

Alessandra Ambrosio Lands the Fall Moschino Campaign

Alessandra Ambrosio is having quite a season. The 29-year-old model opened the Victoria's Secret fashion show, which was nothing unexpected. But then she walked for Prada, Giles, and Louis Vuitton in Paris, which was. That kind of commercial high-fashion crossover is rare for a model. And her rep just confirmed to us that she landed the fall 2010 Moschino campaign, styled by Anna Dello Russo, the fabulous fashion director of Japanese Vogue, who gave us a splendid packing lesson during Fashion Week. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin shot Alessandra on April 15 in New York. But the campaign ought to start more talk about how curves are back. Alessandra is perfect for a season that's all about boobs.

"The Losers" Premiere (Fashion Wire Daily)

fwd108=Fashion Wire Daily - Everyone was a winner on the red carpet at the premiere of "The Losers" at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Tuesday, April 20, especially the film's six leading actors. Zoe Saldana, the lone female in the cast, belied her on-screen tough-girl role by spreading hugs and kisses to the guys that make up the comic-book-based title characters.

Christian Siriano Is Dressing Someone for the Met Ball

Good news! The Met Ball is on May 3! This year the Gala, which celebrates the Costume Institute's new exhibit on American fashion, is sponsored by the Gap. Oprah is a chair, along with Gap designer Patrick Robinson. Few details have emerged about who will dress whom, but Fashionista wonders if Robinson will dress any attendees in Gap. We're inclined to predict not since this event is all about being as fancy as you can be, while the Gap is decidedly anti-fancy. And yet Vera Wang is designing for David's Bridal now, so you never know.

But we should see something by Christian Siriano on the carpet — he tweeted that he's working on a dress for the ball. It would be so great if Christina Hendricks went and wore him again as a big "Eff you" to everyone who turned up their nose at the Siriano creation she wore to the Golden Globes. While it remains unknown who Siriano is dressing, we at least know it's not Oprah, who WWD reports will wear Oscar de la Renta. From this very small amount of intelligence, it sounds like Gap may still be free for an exclusive if Anna Wintour wants it.

LOST RECAP: The Last Recruit – Or The LOST Recruit? BOTH.

This is a Recap of Lost Season 6 Episode 13 entitled “The Last Recruit”, originally airing April 20th, 2010. Spoilers and complaints within. Also, “spoilerplaints”, a new spoiler/complaint animal hybrid that I’m working on. Some serious Dr. Moreau crap goin’ on over here. That happens in that movie. Whoops! Spoiled that too!

Well, that episode was a bit of a…

After the teaser last week, this was Lost’s crazy Willy Wonka boat ride of doom? Claire meeting lawyer Ilana and Jack going for a swim? The episode was essentially a 50-minute alley-oop pass to an ok slam dunk in the last one minute, and while no individual part was exceptionally painful, no individual part (outside the final minute) was exceptionally make-me-give-a-sh*t-ish either, and given that we’re four episodes from the end of one of the craziest shows ever made, I was expecting crazy-straw levels of crazy and received mere half-order of Little Caesar’s Crazy Bread crazy. Which is not, despite the name, actually very crazy. It’s a little crazy, but not like too too crazy.

Correction, one part was exceptionally painful: “Looks like somebody got her voice back.” Wrapping up the dumbest, most unnecessary subplot in the show’s history with the dumbest, most unnecessary expository line possible? That line single-handedly undid whatever was gained from the Writers’ Strike. Next week’s episode better open with a graphic Locke/Widmore knife fight or an even more graphic Kate/Sawyer sex scene, cause you’re in my doghouse right now, Lost. F*ck that expression, I literally own a doghouse for whenever I’m mad at shows and physically place those shows into it whenever they make me mad, so if anyone’s all like “hey where did the show Lost go?” tell them the show Lost is sitting in my show doghouse for tv shows.

Alright, enough complaining, let’s get to the Recap:

Wait one more complaint — did anyone have any doubt that Jack was gonna jump off that boat? Lost set it up as the exact totally minor mid-episode plot twist everyone was expecting, then he jumped off the boat and it wasn’t really a big deal, then he swam to shore very very easily and that wasn’t a big deal either. Were we supposed to be captivated by swimming? On a show with ghosts and monsters and God fighting the Devil and immortal Spanish slaves and parallel universes and shooting babies? Literal doghouse, is all I’m saying.

Control-V – Alright, enough complaining, let’s get to the Recap:

CRAP THAT HAPPENED ON THE ISLAND

Jack and Locke pick up where they left off last week, discussing their respective ghosty grievances, with DarkLocke explaining that he needed RegularLocke’s dead body brought back to the island for him to inhabit (what’s the opposite of a twist? Straightening? Standing still? Whatta stand-still!) Man In Black says Locke was foolish for believing the island had a purpose for him, based only on the flimsy conjecture that the island miraculously restored his ability to f***ing walk, and tells Jack that he only took the form of Christian Shephard to help the group find water and to broaden his repertoire of impressions for his SNL audition (he also took the forms of Lady Gaga and Tiger Woods).

Locke then square-dance handoffs Jack to Claire so they can go over how they’re brother and sister (another stand-still! What is this, 42, the inverse 24?) Locke reassembles the group but is soon approached by Zoe from Team Widmore demanding that he return what he took from them (read: brothah), and if he doesn’t, she’ll blow up some trees, and who doesn’t love trees? Locke’s like, “Here we go.” and the show goes to commercial. Thrills abound.

Locke also pulls Sayid aside (asayid?) and tells him to execute Desmond, and Sayid tells Desmond he has to do it because Locke promised him he’d bring back his long lost love if Sayid followed his every word, just like Smokey promised Richard last century (he and Sayid now gain admittance to the Suckerz Club, the least exclusive club on the island.) Sayid later tells Locke that he went through with it, which I’m sure he did, cause Lost always kills off major characters offscreen midway through episodes.

Sawyer meanwhile pulls Jack aside and tells him he has a deal with Widmore to double-cross Locke, and needs Jack to somehow, some way pull the remaining important non-demon characters away from the group. Jack agrees, then yells “HEY HURLEY, SUN, FRANK AND WHOEVER ELSE ISN’T EVIL NOW, LET’S GO OVER HERE” but Claire’s like “Waiyytt, I smeyell a dingo!” and follows them to Locke’s boat.

The group of significant non-evil characters boards Locke’s boat and plans to sail to Hyrda island and force Widmore to sub them back to land, but Claire’s like “Hold it right theyah, I’m still evil!” and Kate’s like, “Hop on board, I’ll take you back to Aaron so you can creep him the f*ck out instead of us” and she agrees. While on the boat, Frank sees come canned food (or is it Eko?), leaving Jack to whine to Sawyer that he’s not sure they’re doing the right thing by leaving the island, surely marking the first time anyone has ever faced this dilemma in the history of the show. Sawyer’s like “Then why don’t you jump off my boat, Doctor Doubts?” and Jack does, and surprisingly lands in the water, managing to not f*ck it up.

When Sawyer’s party does arrive at Widmore’s island, Zoe says “I know these guys, it’s cool” and everyone lowers their guns, then she’s like “Psyche it’s not cool deal’s off!” and everyone raises their guns again. They then bomb Locke’s island locale, presumably killing a bunch of the extras in red shirts (so many Easter eggs, I’m gonna make an Easter omelette!) and Locke Forrest Gump-carries Jack to safety. Awww, he has a heart after all! Maybe Widmore is the evil one? Maybe no one is expressly “evil” and everyone’s interest falls somewhere in between, as we’ve been arguing in this space all season?

We’ll find out next week during the Lost Willy Wonka blueberry scene.

CRAP THAT HAPPENED OFF THE ISLAND

The flash-sidewayses began to converge this week, with the episode no longer focusing on one individual and instead jumbling together the characters’ alternate realities into one giant Lost Girl Talk song. The freshly run-over Locke smiled through his whole ambulance ride:

…Probably because he’s havin’ some IslandVisions. He’s rushed to the same hospital as pregnant-and-shot Sun, and the two ride side by side on gurneys, causing Sun to have some IslandVisions. And which spinal surgeon is called in to operate on Locke? Who do ya think? Dr. Ana Lucia, of course. IslandVisions!

Kate is in the custody of Sawyer after having been read her Sonofabitch rights, and while they’re waiting for the Feds to come lose her again, Sawyer flirts with her, seems to remember her (visions!) and gets called out for letting her go at LAX when Kate realizes he must not have wanted anyone to know he was in Australia. Miles and Sawyer have to put the Kate matter on hold to go ambush Sayid in his home, as they’re the only two detectives in L.A., and manage to capture him instantly with the ol’ America’s Funniest Home Videos hose gag:

They were gonna have Sawyer kneel down behind Sayid’s knees and have Miles push him a little so he’d fall embarrassingly, but they played it by the book and went with the hosetrip. On the way to the police station, they also got him on a “homosaywhat?”

Elsewhere, Desmond is kicking his island matchmaking up another creepy notch, intentionally bumping into Claire at the Adoption Center And Also Ilana’s Legal Practice Building (named in honor of the philanthropist John Adoptioncenterandalsolana’slegalpractice) and tossing out his flimsiest story yet: He just so happens to be meeting a lawyer who owes him a favor and Claire is visiting an adoption agency with no one there and should meet his lawyer friend first to get some representation, even though this will make her miss the adoption agency appointment she was there for in the first place. She agrees, apparently unaware of this last obvious fact, and OH NO the lawyer is Ilana and she’s looking for Claire because Christian mentioned her in his will! Vis–wait not yet!

Jack arrives at the office building with his piano genius son, meets Claire for the first time, she’s gettin’ visions, he then gets called into the hospital to operate on Locke and now HE’S gettin’ visions!

Jack’s gettin’ visions, Sawyer’s gettin’ visions, Sun’s fine and she’s gettin’ visions, Vision from The Avengers is gettin’ royalties — things are visioning up nicely for the alternate reality.

So where do they go from here? Probably the island, I’m guessing, cause that’s the place in the show. There’s my analysis for the week.

On the plus side, everything is converging on both sides of the realitycoin, and the island is set up for a big time bloodbath next episode, so I’m confident my doghouse will soon be vacant. Then I could put a dog in it instead of a tv show, and then I’d have a dog, which is awesome. Good episode!

Episode thoughts? Theories? Questions? Predictions? Favorite/Least favorite parts? Leave ‘em all in the comments. Quiet comment board last week, Losties — only four episodes left, so speak now or forever hold your Lost. (My wedding vows)

Time to Check Out New Watches in Our Latest Shop-A-Matic

Clockwise from top left: Zaz Metal Mesh by Nooka, Pink & Green Timex 80 by Timex, Estremo by Brera Orologi, Gold Bracelet Watch by Michael Kors, and Disco Chain Wrap Watch by La Mer Collections.

While we love the look of stacked bracelets, the simplicity of a watch on a bare wrist is suddenly refreshing. Whether it's an oversize men's timepiece or a bright neon number, watches can be an underrated accessory, often seen as a mere de-facto gift for fathers and boyfriends. So why not skip piling on the bangles this spring and try one on? In our latest Shop-a-Matic, we found 115 watches for men and women that range from retro-inspired digital styles to classic investment pieces. The full selection is here but click ahead to see our favorites.

Zaz Metal Mesh by Nooka
Price: $395
Why We Like It: A clear face gives the illusion that the time is displayed directly over the wearer's wrist and is guaranteed to start conversations.

Pink & Green Timex 80 by Timex
Price: $50
Why We Like It: Timex has reissued their classic digital watch from the eighties in a multitude of hues, and this sorbet-colored one reminds us of eating Popsicles while watching Jem & the Holograms in our youth.

Estremo by Brera Orologi
Price: $795
Why We Like It: Black-on-black detailing is sleek and edgy, but a scratch-resistant face and the ability to be submerged 100 meters underwater make this investment piece worth its price.

Gold Bracelet Watch by Michael Kors
Price: $195
Why We Like It: A bold navy face is an unexpected detail on a classic gold bracelet watch and adds an eye-catching dose of color when peeking out of a shirt cuff.

Disco Chain Wrap Watch by La Mer Collections
Price: $108
Why We Like It: Forgoing bracelets may leave wrists feeling naked, but these pewter chains mimic layered bangles and will toughen up any sweet spring frock.

Even In Times of Volcano Disaster, The British Remain Calm

Teen Vogue’s Andrew Bevan is one of the thousands of people stranded in Europe right now due to the volcanic ash spewing out of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland at the moment. But wouldn’t you know it? The fine people at Andrew’s hotel in London had the courtesy to pass him this note (along with a free drink), which just goes to show that if you’re going to be stranded anywhere during a natural disaster, London along with their extremely calm, docile population is the place to be:

Yet more proof that this last week or so has spawned thousands of sentences with the word “volcano” we never thought we’d see.
