Last Night on Late Night: Stephen Colbert Freaks Out His Stoned Audience

Last night, while the competition made facile references to Icelandic volcanoes and Woody Harrelson, Stephen Colbert managed to put together an excellent 4/20 bit intended to kill any buzzes in the audience at home. As a conservative on Comedy Central, it was really his only course of action. Craig Ferguson weighed in on the "holiday" in his monologue, and, in an elaborate Undercover Boss sketch on his show, Jay Leno learned that his writers may not like his monologues (the self-awareness apparently ended there, though, as the show opened with a reference to "Goldman Sucks"). Momofuku's David Chang stopped by The Late Show and was immediately embarrassed by the state of his mussels. Finally, Jon Stewart got sanctimonious with Fox News. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Shiloh Fernandez Wins Riding Hood Lead

In the Hood: Shiloh Fernandez (United States of Tara, Jericho) has nabbed the biggest role of his young career, winning the male romantic lead opposite Amanda Seyfried in the upcoming Girl With the Red Riding Hood, a “gothic horror re-imagining” of the children’s fairy tale to be directed by Twilight's Catherine Hardwicke. Fernandez, who tested for the part of Edward in Twilight, reportedly had to read seven times for the role of orphaned woodcutter Peter. Hopefully for Fernandez's sake, Hardwicke won't cast a second male actor who's younger, tanner, and buffer in this film of hers. [Heat Vision/HR]

Important Job for Mottola: Paramount has hired Greg Mottola (Adventureland) to write the screenplay for its adaptation of Leanne Shapton’s book Important Artifacts, a project that already has Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman attached. The book is a fictional estate-auction catalogue featuring the items and photographs representing a four-year romance between a male photographer (Pitt) and a food columnist (Portman). Mottola really needn't stress too much considering most people would probably pay $12.50 just to watch Pitt and Portman sit next to each other in silence for 90 minutes. [Risky Business/HR]

All in the Glam: Adam Lambert will be heading out on the Glam Nation Tour this summer, with the first stop scheduled for June 4 in Pennsylvania. “People won't be let down in the glam department; it'll definitely be something to look at as well as listen to,” Lambert said. Orianthi and Idol fourth-place finalist Allison Iraheta will serve as openers on the tour, while third-place finalist Danny Gokey will no doubt be staying far, far away. [MTV]

Duo Joins Stretch: Universal has signed on Rob Letterman to direct and Nick Stoller to rewrite its upcoming Stretch Armstrong project based on the Hasbro toy. The film, which is due in 2012, is being developed as a starring vehicle for Taylor Lautner. Conveniently, Letterman is familiar with the werewolf kind, having just directed Monsters vs. Aliens. [Variety]

Kylie Channels Goddess: Kylie Minogue has announced she will be returning with her eleventh studio album this summer. Called Aphrodite, the disc will be released on July 5 with lead single "All the Lovers" due June 28. Minogue said the album celebrates “her dance-floor roots” and that "Lovers" “gives her goose-bumps.” She was kind enough to release a 30-second snippet of "Lovers," and while it's not quite enough to judge by, there is definitely the potential for goose-bumps here! [Billboard]

They Spy: Peter Landesman, Brad Weston, and Graham King have sold an original pitch for a “next-generation spy movie.” Landesman, a journalist turned screenwriter, is aiming to explore “the deeper, more covert, more dangerous” world of intelligence that he says he was privy to as a journalist, hoping to reveal “a layer of operative and intelligence gathering that is virtually without oversight.” We have no idea what this means, but we have a hunch this will star a Peter Sarsgaard instead of a Matt Damon. [HR]

Coke Drama: Gregory Hoblit (Fracture) will direct and produce an untitled Castle Rock drama written by Frank Baldwin. The project follows an “au pair, a reformed Harlem drug dealer, three Princeton graduates, and a ruthless Chilean drug lord” who (of course) cross paths after a kilo of cocaine is stolen. Five dollars says this was pitched somewhere along the way as "Crash meets Traffic." [HR]

Backed by Gospel Choir, Jon Stewart Lets Fox News Have It

The latest entry in a predictably amusing back-and-forth between Jon Stewart and Fox News, Stewart brought in a gospel choir for tonight’s Daily Show to provide the backing vocals for his diatribe against the network. After Stewart initially went after Fox News’ Bernie Goldberg at the end of last week for making generalizations about liberals, Goldberg responded last night in an appearance on The O'Reilly Factor that Stewart doesn’t critique liberals in the same way he goes after conservatives: "You are not nearly as edgy as you think you are," he told Stewart over the airwaves, "You are just a safe Jay Leno with a much smaller audience."

Tonight, Stewart offered his rebuttal in which he picked apart Goldberg’s attack and called Fox “the lupus of news,” building to an expletive-filled outburst and exuberant dance (you just have to see it).

Susan Boyle’s Memoir Dream Becomes Reality

Susan Boyle will (finally!) tell the world her story in an upcoming memoir called The Woman I Was Born to Be, which is due to come out this fall. “I’m writing this book to try to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and I hope it will benefit other people,” Boyle said. And if that is the kind of metaphor to be expected in the book, I think it’s safe to say that she is not going to surprise us with Faulkner-like prose to match her Dion-like pipes. [Music Mix/EW]

Doormen and Owners Reach Agreement, Avert Strike

The city's Trumps and Van der Woodsens can breathe a sigh of relief. The union representing about 30,000 New York City apartment building doormen was able to come to an agreement with the owners of more than 3,200 apartment buildings late tonight, averting a strike that was set to start at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. The talks went down to the wire, as the owners finally agreed to a new four-year contract that will increase the total pay of the doormen by nearly 10 percent without cutting their benefits, according to a union official. Negotiations have been taking place for several days, with the main point of contention being the owners’ demand that the doormen and other workers share some of the cost of their medical and dental benefits.

Michael Douglas’s Son Sentenced to 60 Months in Jail

In happier times.

Cameron Douglas, Michael Douglas’s son, will be heading to prison for five years, despite the best efforts of his famous father, who wrote a handwritten note to the judge asking for leniency and claiming his son is sober now. Cameron, 31, was arrested in June 2009 on charges of conspiring to distribute meth and cocaine, and could have faced up to ten years in jail. When announcing the ruling in Manhattan Federal Court today, federal judge Richard Berman said that many of the letters he received portrayed Cameron as a victim: “Get over that idea,” he said. Cirque du Soleil Annouces Plans for Michael Jackson Show

As anyone could probably guess, in terms of Michael Jackson tributes, last year’s concert documentary film was certainly not going to be It. Jackson’s estate and Cirque du Soleil have announced plans for a “concertlike” arena tour launching next year, which will be followed in 2012 by a permanent Las Vegas production of the show, which will feature the patented Soleil acrobatics accompanied by Jackson’s greatest hits, as well as some never-before-heard tunes. No title for the show has been announced yet, though they're obviously going to go with "Man in the House of Mirrors." [MTV]

Charges Levied Against Fourteen Alleged Gambinos

Fourteen alleged members of the storied Gambino crime family — including current boss Daniel Marino — have been indicted on charges that include murder, racketeering, prostitution of minors, and trying to locate and intimidate a sequestered jury, in cases that span “literally decades of criminality,” the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Manhattan said today. "Today, the Gambino family has lost one of its leaders, and many of its rising stars have now fallen," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. "We will continue to work with our partners at the FBI to eradicate the mafia and to keep organized crime from victimizing the businesses and the people of this city." [CNN, NYT]

Though Sex and the City 2 won’t be out for another six weeks, a surprising number of fans are already clamoring to secure their seats for Carrie and friends' latest adventure. White House Not Exactly Thrilled About Former Counsel’s New Gig

After it was revealed last night that Greg Craig, President Obama’s former White House counsel, is now representing Goldman Sachs, the White House offered a fairly measured response to the news this afternoon.

“I’m not going to characterize the White House’s feelings on jobs that members of the administration take after they’ve left the administration,” White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters. “We weren’t consulted about the particular position, but that’s not something that we would have a heads-up on necessarily.”

Burton reiterated the president's ethics policy, though, which restricts former White House officials from lobbying for two years after leaving office — conveniently for Craig, who was a top adviser to Obama during his campaign and left after a year — it does not ban former officials from offering guidance to clients with "business or other interactions with the federal government."

Uh-Oh: B.o.B. Raps Over Vampire Weekend

Have you somehow managed to avoid B.o.B.’s sappy hit single “Nothin' On You”? Congratulations! Also, you can go ahead and give in now — the kid’s got a lot more where that came from. To wit: Yesterday we pointed your attention to “Airplanes Pt. 2,” blessed by the radio gods by both a maudlin earworm hook from Paramore’s Hayley Williams and a verse from Eminem; now comes “The Kids,” another leak from B.o.B.’s debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, out next week, and it sounds like Mr. Ray’s outdone himself. With the help of fellow potential breakout star Janelle Monae, B.o.B. goes in over Vampire Weekend’s “The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance,” singing the chorus himself and everything, and crafting another high-water mark in his chosen field of scrubbed-clean non-rap. The dudes in Vampire Weekend had to sign off on this, right? Why did they?

Are Lady Gaga’s Stage Panties Getting Skimpier?

Lady Gaga performed in a white lace bodystocking adorned with some white straps and other frippery in Tokyo today. She wore what was essentially a less elaborate red version of this outfit — a lace body stocking but with a thong underneath instead of on top — at Fashion Week last September performing at Marc Jacobs's after-party. She's been wearing plenty of bottoms lately — pants, skirts, what have you — as you can see in Gaga Daily's photo archive. But are her performance panties getting skimpier? She wore a thong under her polar bear coat in "Bad Romance" and no panties under her fishnets in the "Telephone" video. Her Grammys leotard was noticeably skimpier in front and back. It may be too soon to say that Gaga is, in fact, showing more of her lower quarters onstage, but it felt like an Important Question to raise. And it gives us an excuse to show you her new avant-garde thong, which might or might not be made out of toilet paper.

Richard Fuld: Lehman Brothers Was ‘Risk Averse’

We didn't watch Lehman Brothers' Richard Fuld testifying to the House Financial Services Committee, but after reading Michael Corkery's live blog at DealJournal, we almost wish we had. For a hearing about an obscure accounting tactic, this thing had it all! Ferocious attacks from grandstanding congressmen! Tears, from Matthew Lee, a former senior vice-president at the firm. And stony, amazing defiance from the man of the hour, Richard Fuld.

We particularly enjoyed this exchange:

Fuld declares: "We were risk adverse."

Rep. Charlie Wilson whispers: "How can you say that."

Fuld: "I know I walked right into that."

Fuld: Our commercial real estate investments were conservative, but they were victims of "terrible timing."

That makes sense.

Simon Doonan Is Getting to Know Brooklyn Before the Barneys Co-op Opens in Cobble Hill

Barneys creative director Simon Doonan thinks that Brooklyn is a natural location for a new Barneys Co-op store. “Every girl I work with lives in Brooklyn,” he said at the SCAD Style Étoile Awards last night. “Everybody at the Observer and at Barneys, all my colleagues are in Brooklyn now.” The new Barneys Co-op is near the Jonathan Adler boutique on Atlantic Avenue, and the couple went to check it out on Sunday. “We were in the BK, in Crooklyn,” Adler said. “Yeah, we’re totally down with the ‘hood,” Doonan added, although they felt a tad out of place. “We felt so self-conscious about not having facial hair,” Adler admitted. “I wondered why Jonny stuffed me into a little baby stroller before we went out,” said Doonan. “He said, ‘I have to pretend to be a single-mother lesbian over here.’”

While they disagreed with New York’s assessment of Park Slope as the city’s best neighborhood, and insisted that Greenwich Village, where they live, is tops, they’re bullish on Brooklyn. Adler says his store there is doing very well, and Doonan thinks Brooklyn is “groovy” and can’t wait for the Co-op store to open there. “Next to Trader Joe’s! Hello! Bonjour!”

Sunday’s Brooklyn sojourn, Doonan said, was for scoping, looking at the façade, thinking about it, and looking at the neighborhood. “It would be really fun to do something completely bananas with that façade. You know, like Salvador Dalí’s museum in Barcelona, he covered the whole front of it in Spanish bread. Something insane like that, I think they would love that in Brooklyn.” “But,” Adler told us, “it’ll probably just be ironic-facial-hair-and-baby-stroller themed.”

Yale Publishing Course Will Be International, Business-Oriented

Former Yale University Press Publishing Director Tina Weiner saw an opportunity when two senior advisers to the recently defunct Stanford Publishing Course approached her, hoping to find a new home for their storied program in New Haven. Sensing that there would be a hole in the market without Stanford's program, Weiner convinced Yale officials to take it on under the aegis of their burgeoning international-studies program. We spoke with Weiner about the new Yale Publishing Course, which will debut this summer at a time when many see the journalism and publishing industries in a steady decline.

So, where did the idea come from?
It was clear that people who went to [the Stanford program] thought it was amazing, and was really something that they weren't getting somewhere else. There are lots of entry-level courses on publishing, teaching people how to do specific skills. Lots of people who were a little further in their career found that there was no place they could go where they could get really in-depth discussions and not just panels.

So, this was proposed to you by Robert Baensch and Martin Levin, from the Stanford program?
I knew both of them for many years as Yale University Press's publishing director. They said, "We would love to move this to the East Coast. On the East Coast we think we could get many more people from New York and it would be much more attractive to foreign attendees, because they could also combine it with a visit with New York and publishers there." Yale does a lot of leadership programs, training programs, and international programs. I thought this could fit in with that.

Can you describe what it will be like?
I'm not sure what Yale faculty will be participating, but there are a lot of people from the publishing world who have signed on. We're having Kevin McCean, who is VP and editorial director of Consumer's Union. We're having Cyndi Leive, editor-in-chief of Glamour. We're having Dick Stolley, who was senior editorial adviser for Time Inc for a long time.

And it's a week?
We condensed the course to a week because we heard people didn't want to be away from their office for so long. That's why it's in summer, too. It's really jam-packed. The meals are meant to be when you discuss more. We wanted like, total immersion.

Talk to me about journalism and publishing at Yale in general. The school just launched an undergraduate-journalism initiative, and is developing a publishing course at a time when a lot of people say the field is shrinking.
Yale doesn't have a school of journalism, as you know. But I was looking at the Yale alumni database, and there's huge numbers of people involved in journalism and publishing and media. I'm not the one to speak to that particularly — I brought this because of my background in publishing. But I think one thing that is absolutely true is that Yale is more and more seeing itself as a global university. And this outreach to foreign publishers is another manifestation of that reaching out. Ultimately we hope to have some scholarships for publishers in developing nations.

But I'm wondering how you see this fitting in to the transitional stage the industry is in right now.
Well, when I talk to the speakers and stuff, they're addressing that. There'll be sessions specifically not about the past and not about now, and not about looking to the future. What we're trying to do is to prepare people to think about how you might do things in three years, when things will be totally different.

Why now?
We're starting this year, it's quite a tall order to do that, because we wanted to build on the momentum of the Stanford course. Also, we thought that this year more than others — though I think it's true increasingly every year — is the year of transition. There's all this new and very rapid change in digital delivery. It's also coming at a time where the economy is so difficult that you really have to rethink yourself.

What's the size?
We're thinking about 80.

Any significant changes from the Stanford program?
It will be a little more business-oriented. I think there's going to be more international content. … Yale has Yale University Press, which is a fabulous publishing house, so Yale has always been involved in publishing. It is a natural fit.

Hello From Your New Vulture Blogger

A vulture calling attention to itself.

Hello! It's nearly the end of my first day and I rudely have yet to do what people are supposed to do at the beginning of their first day: introduce themselves. Let me fix that. I'm Willa Paskin, and I'm the new blogger here at Vulture. I'm more psyched than Bill and Ted, more tickled than Elmo, more jazzed than Charlie Parker, more pumped than Christian Slater — and, obviously, more prone to tortured turns of pop-culture phrase than Entertainment Tonight — to be joining the crack team of experts here. Before joining Vulture I worked at Radar, BlackBook, Double X, and Variety, and before any of that, read books, listened to music, hoovered up movies, and watched lots and lots and lots of TV (including this and this and this). I'm looking forward to blogging for you. Let's have some fun.

Which 4/20 Album Release Is the Most Pot-Referencing?

It's April 20, the day marijuana fans shirk more responsibility and smoke more pot than they otherwise might on a typical day. Also, by SHEER COINCIDENCE, it's the release date of new albums by music-making reefer aficionados Willie Nelson, Cypress Hill, and Devin the Dude. But if you're going to put down your pipe and drive to a music store on 4/20, you'll want to be sure that whichever CD you pick up is packed with tacky weed references. So which of today's new albums has the most?

Willie Nelson, Country Music
Pot References: Is this the same Willie Nelson who did Larry King Live high last week? There's lots of bluegrass here, but no grass. On a close listen, we detected not even a single oblique marijuana shout-out. Check out this tragic missed lyrical opportunity, from "Ocean of Diamonds":

Some people drink Champagne out under the stars,
While others drink whiskey leaning over a bar.
But all that I need, dear, to make me feel fine,
Is to know that your love will forever be mine.

Suggested alternate ending for the above verse: "... Is a huge bag of weed." (It's funnier if it doesn't rhyme.)

Score: Zero pot leaves.

Devin the Dude, Suite #420
Pot references: This morning, Devin told Vuture he'd been waiting six years for April 20 to fall on a Tuesday so he could release a date-appropriate pot-themed album, and he definitely made this one count. See that cover art up there? It certainly captures the feel of these laid-back tracks, most of which follow days in the life of pot-smoking Devin. Still, it's slightly unforgivable that "Ultimate High" is not really about marijuana.

Score: Five spliffs.

Cypress Hill, Rise Up
Pot references: Plenty on just about every track. Songs like "Light It Up," "Pass the Dutch," and "K.U.S.H." are as stupid as you'd expect, and practically every jam here features both vaguely metaphorical marijuana mentions ("How high can you get?" etc.) and completely literal ones for potheads too stoned for Cypress Hill's tricky wordplay. Best of all, Rise Up features interstitial banter from Cheech & Chong (who, by chance, have a movie out today).

Score: 10 million blunts. (Winner!)

Ben & Jerry’s Unveils New Flavor, Bonnaroo Buzz, On Incredibly Appropriate Day

Behold, Ben & Jerry’s new flavor, Bonnaroo Buzz (click to make biglike):

A Bonnaroo-themed Ben & Jerry’s flavor with the word “Buzz” in it released on 4/20? Ya coulda just dropped the pretense and called it Eat This, Potty McPotpot (Pot). Is it even ice cream, or just hollowed-out containers for transporting pot made up to look like ice cream? [Mental Note: Market these.]

The flavor (allegedly) blends “Light coffee & malt ice creams with whiskey caramel swirls & English toffee pieces”. Yeah? More like, “pot”. (Ohhh! Ben & Zingers!)

Ex-Employee’s Suit Against Prada Japan Gains Momentum

Rina Bovrisse

Rina Bovrisse's legal complaint against Prada Japan, who she said asked her to fire employees they found unattractive, has turned into a full-fledged lawsuit. Two former Prada Japan employees "who received the same harassments" are joining her in the suit. Bovrisse wants a public apology from Prada, a pledge not to continue the alleged discrimination, and money for psychological trauma and legal fees.

Bovrisse says Prada Japan called many female employees "aged, ugly, fat, bad body shape, bad teeth, disgusting, and not cute," and tried to get them to quit. A source also told us she was thisclose to landing a job with Prada Japan, but never did because someone in the office didn't like the way she dressed and did her makeup.

The trial begins May 17. Bovrisse's lawyers said Prada offered Bovrisse around $107,000 in severance but she turned it down to fight for a public apology.

The Rodarte Sample Sale Is Actually Kind of Affordable!

Admittedly, we were skeptical of Rodarte's cash-only sample sale, which kicked off today. With projected prices ranging from $40 to $4,000, we envisioned racks of damningly expensive singed chiffon and webby knits, each item costing several months' rent. Instead, reports from the front lines are gleefully positive. Dresses and shoes start at $300, leather jackets are $500 to $2,000, and a slew of skirts and tops are in the $80-to-$100 range. Even the extra-frugal among us can snag a tote for $40. Hurry over: The sale ends tomorrow at 7 p.m. [Racked NY; Mizhattan]

Tanning Linked to Addictive Behavior, Again; Dree Hemingway Named Face of Ferragamo Fragrance

Dana Lorenz Pairs Her Pearls With Barbed Wire

Dana Lorenz is the pretty-punk jewelry designer behind Fenton/Fallon and J.Crew's most recent collaborative jewelry collection. Trained as a painter, she started out creating necklaces for herself and friends, layering strands of pearls and Swarovski crystals with spikes and chains. The designs first caught the eye of Alexandre Plokhov (of the now-defunct label Cloak), who asked her to design a line of accessories for his menswear show in 2005. The collection's pieces attracted the attention a buyer at Barneys, and demand grew. Her jewelry has since appeared on the necks of a slew of A-listers and celebs (including Michelle Obama herself, last year).

The J.Crew collaboration sprung from a serendipitous meeting with creative director Jenna Lyons, after Lorenz was "coerced" by the First Lady's unofficial stylist Ikram Goldman into attending a dinner party at designer Maria Cornejo's apartment. "It was one of those times I was like, 'I cannot go to a party right now — I look like a shlub.'" But she went, and met Lyons, who inquired about her piled-on necklaces. And now the Fenton/Fallon for J.Crew collection, which launched earlier this month, showcases her penchant for mixed-material statement pieces, with Swarovski crystals and hand-dyed ribbons blended with silver, gold, and brass chains. (New pieces for J.Crew will debut in May and June.) We caught up with Lorenz to talk about her counterintuitive style, new shopping philosophy, and pursuit of the ultimate luggage set.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?
I kind of do a punk- or goth-inspired version of things you'd typically get as a classic graduation gift. It might start with an I.D. bracelet or a single strand of pearls, but then I'll add leather barbed wire or biker chains.

What kind of person wears your designs?
Every time someone comes into the store and buys something, they're wacky and amazing. It's someone who's strong and has a point of view.

Who are your favorite designers?
I love Gripoix jewelry for Chanel, and costume jewelry from the late eighties and early nineties. I also love people who are designing jewelry that is totally opposite from what I do, like Phillip Crangi and Eddie Borgo.

Where do you like to shop in New York?
I'm probably the No. 1 customer at Saint James uptown. I'll wear a Saint James hoodie with like, 30 necklaces.

How would you describe your personal style?
Jackie Onassis mixed with Iris Apfel.

What trends do you like right now?
I love that we're getting back to classic clothing. I'm a crazy eclectic person, but you'd be shocked by the preppy things I buy for myself. Sometimes designers project their crazy onto something completely different than themselves.

What trends are you ready to see retired?
I've decided I'm not buying anymore cheap things. I'd rather save up and buy one amazing piece from Barneys than buy twelve to fifteen things on lower Broadway. Those pieces never see the light of day. I'll look at them two weeks later and I'm like, "This is revolting." I want to buy things that are really worth it.

What's one item you're saving to buy?
A chocolate brown crocodile Birkin bag — but I'll be dead before I see that. I'm actually saving up for a really amazing luggage set. I want a full set, even the pieces that you never see people use anymore, like the makeup case with the mirror. I'm trying to be more formal.

What should every woman have in her closet?
I love a great white shirt. Steal your boyfriend's amazing white shirt, and even if you break up, keep buying it. I go to Brooks Brothers ; I always monogram my shirts.

What's something you never leave the house without?
Lipstick — I have like, 50 shades. Right now I'm wearing Nars Viridiana, which looks like Rum Raisin from the nineties.

The Best and Worst of April Fashion Magazines

This month's issues included many spreads where the models looked dead or close to it. And isn't April, the beginning of spring, supposed to be a celebration of life? Things blooming and cute baby things being born? But that's why magazines hire models: They look just as good morose as they do vivacious. French Vogue put deathly looking girls in hula skirts and Prada. Lula shot models as though they'd died in a pillow fight. And British Vogue shot a "private dancer," who looked pale and passed out on a chintzy bed. See those photos, Heidi Klum wearing nothing but cream, and more from the April magazines in the slideshow.

Nadya Suleman: I feel guilty every day of my life

For Nadya Suleman, being in the spotlight is a double-edged sword. The media have invaded her privacy and turned her into a carnival attraction, she told Oprah Winfrey on Tuesday. But Suleman also acknowledges that the media has also become a source of income for her, a single mother of 14 children.

Do you watch those graphic PSAs?

A razor blade sitting in a blood-splattered bathroom sink. A bacteria-infested toilet seat that wouldn't be welcome in a gas station. Open lesions and gray, jagged teeth peeking out from behind chapped lips. These are images that have become hard to ignore in some parts of the United States.

Jake Gyllenhaal and I Have Same First Childhood Memory; Leads Me To Believe We Have a Future Together

The older we get, the hazier our childhood memories grow. But there is always that handful of important first memories as living beings that are burned into the deepest of brainfolds and that have remained firmly in place despite years of college-level art history index cards, lengthy revenge lists, and alcohol consumption. For me, those few memories are as indelible as the “The Crossed Bison” painted on the walls of the 17,000 year old Lascaux Caves (officially the first time my art history degree has been used in a work capacity, also or ever. Thanks Memory.). Like the time I discovered that, as a giant baby, I could crawl out of my crib with the ease of an pre-pubescent Eastern European Cirque De Soleil veteran. Or singing “Goldfinger” at the age of 4. (Which should settle that argument about whether or not Fag Hags are a result of their environment or naturally born that way.)

But there is yet another memory that has always stayed with me, perhaps because it was the first time I first became a self-aware smart kid, Little Man Tate-meets-Terminator style. (Have I also mentioned what a humble child prodigy I am?) Somewhere around the age of 3 I began learning how to write. There I was, marker in hand, construction paper poised like one of Whoopi’s brand new urinary napkins (what?), when I wrote my first word. My name, “MICHELLE”, in all caps. It was surprisingly legible, save for the letter E’s, which rather than featuring a minimalist’s average of 3 horizontal lines, opted for a more jazzy hundred and fifty or so. They were little mustache combs turned on their sides. To me, they were perfect and, more importantly, correct.

So you can imagine my surprise as I crack open this month’s GQ featuring a fine-looking Jake Gyllenhaal to find this first paragraph:

Jake Gyllenhaal’s very first memory is of sitting on one of the striped blue window benches in his families kitchen. He is trying to draw the letter E. He has managed the vertical line to the left without a problem. Likewise, he has drawn the upper and lower horizontal lines in the conventional manner. It is with the middle horizontal line that he rebels. Just a single line between? He doesn’t see why, and he refuses to go along with it. Instead, he fills in the gap with maybe a hundred horizontal lines.

“It didn’t make any sense to me,” Gyllenhaal remembers, “that there would be only one line.”

OK, so, I guess here is my question: Am I right to be mind-blown? Because, really, even if many children have done this in their lifetime, how many of them remember that moment? Is it hundreds? Thousands? Or, as I might gladly suspect, only me and Jake Gyllenhaal? Could this be the reason we ended up in the same college the same year? Or could it just be that I’m trying to forge yet another bridge from my heart to his?

Last question: Are people who remember drawing the letter E with many lines also as creepy as that last sentence might indicate that I am? Because, if so, TTYCall Me, Gyll.

And yes, feel free to share your first childhood memory in the comments, because at this point, we are like family.

So The New James Bond Movie…Wait, No, Now We’re Talking About A Broccoli Woman

Did you just read the headline for this blog post?  You did, didn’t you?  And probably it made you a little confused.  You might have read it and then by the end of the headline you were disoriented and maybe even a bit angry.  Well, that’s exactly how you would have felt if you read part of this Huffinton Post article (Bold lettering and the word “motherf**king” added for emphasis):

Producers say work on the next James Bond film has been halted indefinitely because of uncertainty about the future of distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. Producers Michael G. Wilson and [motherf**king] Barbara Broccoli say development of the movie was suspended after MGM failed to find a buyer.

And that’s about as far as it’s possible to get when you read that article because for the rest of all time ever you’re distracted by the idea that there is actually a woman named Barbara Broccoli.  Obviously “Broccoli” is a hilarious last name to have, but the alliteration with “Barbara” is just perfect.  Barbara Broccoli.

But I’d also like to know what’s going on with this James Bond movie.  I never will, though; never ever.  And that’s all because this article didn’t properly prepare me to see such a ridiculous name.  Perhaps with some warning I would have been able to continue reading.  Here are a few possible ways the sentence introducing Barbara Broccoli could have been written so as to not be so jarring:

“Producers Michael G. Wilson and — just so you know the following woman is named a vegetable — Barbara Broccoli say development…”

“Producers Michael G. Wilson and some woman whom will we not name here for reasons of national sanity say development…”

“Some man and a woman were all like…”

See, all of those would have worked, and we would have been able to get through the rest of that article like normal people instead of having to do an hour of research to find out that her father was Albert R. Broccoli who has a slightly less funny name but produced some of the older Bond films.

How To Date Christina Hendricks

In the current issue of Esquire, really hot person Christina Hendricks gave some tips about what she looks for in a man (Oh I got a tip for ya, if ya catch my drift… Use half and half in your omeletts instead of milk, then after making that omelette I’m talking about my penissssss).

Even though she’s married, let’s take a second to go through Christina’s dating advice on the likely chance that she’ll get divorced tomorrow and swing by the BWE offices aching for a rebound (she wouldn’t be the first Mad Men co-star to do so, *WIIINK* at Duck Phillips). Give us the boobboob, Christina. Er, lowdown:

We want you to order Scotch. It’s the most impressive drink order. It’s classic. It’s sexy. Such a rich color. The glass, the smell. It’s not watered down with fruit juice. It’s Scotch. And you ordered it.

I’m usually a beer drinker, but I have nothing against Scotch, it’s enjoyable, I’d just kinda feel like an a-hole if all I ever ordered was Scotch, particularly if I kept talking about how classic and rich it was. But no big deal, diff’rent strokes, right? You’re pretty, we can make this work.

Panties is a wonderful word. When did you stop saying “panties”? It’s sexy. It’s girlie. It’s naughty. Say it more.

Uhhhmm, I don’t recall ever saying “panties,” not because I’m against it or anything, but I’m just rarely ever in a situation where I’m called upon to address female underpants by name. I mean, I can make an effort to say “panties” should that situation ever come up, but it’s really not gonna be often, unless I really go out of my way to slip it into arguments about Avatar.

To recap: You want me to sit there sipping Scotch, talking about your panties? And how thick would you like my molester mustache to be?

What else?

Stand up, open a door, offer a jacket. We talk about it with our friends after you do it. We say, “Can you believe he stood up when I approached the table?” It makes us feel important. And it makes you important because we talk about it.

Yeah, sure, I’ll stand up when you approach the table – IF WE’RE ON THE TITANIC. Call me ungentlemanly if you want, but if one of my nonbillionaire friends randomly stood up for a girl when she went to the bathroom at a restaurant, I’d never stop making fun of him. I wouldn’t even finish the dinner, cause I’d be using my mouth solely for the purpose of ridiculing him.

I mean, I realize this was a standard social custom at one point in time, but so were monocles, and so was slavery. Are you saying you want me to stand up when you approach the table, holding a monocle and yelling at a slave? I’m just not sure I can do that, Christina. I’m really trying my best here, but if we’re gonna make this relationship work, there’s gonna have to be some give and take.

No man should be on Facebook. It’s an invasion of everyone’s privacy. I really cannot stand it.

This clearly just isn’t gonna work out, Christina. I’m sorry. Please stop crying, you’re embarrassing both of us. Hey, guess what? PANTIES. Eh? Cheerin’ up a little bit? Yeahhhh. But seriously, I’m not gonna f*** you ever. That is what I have decided.
