Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 21 Apr 2010 | 7:40 am Sendhil Ramamurthy has exactly 15 Hindi words in Ekta Kapoor's Shor
When this week American NRI actor Sendhil Ramamurthy flew down to Mumbai he had a shock waiting for him. His first Indian film It's A Wonderful Afterlife is being dubbed into Hindi.
Sendhil's thick but gracious American accent is a dead giveaway. He is not at all familiar with Hindi. And yet he will be seen spouting rapid fire Hindi dialogues in It's A Wonderful Afterlife.
He doesn't hesitate in expressing his displeasure. "I just heard about the dubbed version. I kinda hate it. I didn't know there was going to be a Hindi version. I'm surprised and not too happy to hear that I will be speaking in Hindi. I've heard myself speak in French, Japanese, Polish... and so many other languages that my serial Heroes was dubbed in. It sounds weird. It takes away from the performance. Now I'm about to hear myself in Hindi. I wish they just had Hindi sub-titles."
Sendhil's first Bollywood film Shor, produced by Ekta Kapoor, has him speaking in English. "My character is supposed to speak a smattering of bad Hindi in Shor. I have exactly fifteen words in Hindi in Shor. Trust me, I've counted them. I tried to get them to cut it down. I had thirty Hindi words to begin with. I campaigned to get them reduced by half. I must be the only actor in the world who has actually asked for my lines to be cut."
Sendhil says he doesn't see any incongruity in being a Bollywood actor who can't speak Hindi. "When I was here the last time my producer Ekta Kapoor had thrown a party for me to meet the Bollywood actors and actresses. When I apologetically confessed that I didn't speak in Hindi, they said, 'Neither do we.' I've to be realistic about what I can expect from my so-called Bollywood career. I can't play fluent Hindi-speaking hero. I wasn't born and raised in India. So a full-fledged Bollywood career is just not going to happen. But there're so many kinds of films being made in Bollywood."
Sendhil's second language is Kannada since his father is from Karnataka. "My mother is Tamil. My dad is Kannada. I can barely manage Kannada. I don't know Hindi at all. For those 15 words in Shor, I got a Hindi coach to tutor me and then I memorized them on my I-Pod. On my treadmill or while driving I learnt those fifteen words."
Speaking about the extensive media exposure, Sendhil says, "I do have a responsibility to promote a film when I am in it. And I've to rush back to start work on a new American television serial Covert Affairs from April 20. I wouldn't be in India for the premiere of Gurinder's film. I'm really disappointed. I wanted to be here for the premiere. I tried to accommodate it."
In Covert Affairs, Sendhil plays the male lead. "I get to play a character very different from what I play in Heroes. It's a childhood fantasy come-true. I'll be running around shooting guns. I don't only get to play out an action fantasy I get paid for it. I'm excited because I play an American CIA agent. It isn't an Indian character. I'm trying not to do culture-specific roles. It's very difficult.
Speaking on It's A Wonderful Afterlife, Sendhil says, "It's a fun film. I hope people will enjoy it. Nobody can accuse Gurinder of making the same film twice."
Sendhil is all praise for his co-star Shabana Azmi. "Shabana and I have kept in touch after shooting. My parents are her huge fans. When I was shooting with her in the UK they actually flew over from the United States to meet her. Shabana was so warm and generous with my parents."
Sendhil is married to actress Olga Sosnovska. "I met her in London at drama school. She's British-Polish. We have two children. I make sure the family travels with me when I'm shooting outside the US. They were with me the whole time in the UK when we did Gurinder's film. It's difficult to co-ordinate their schedules with mine. Luckily I've the means to fly them wherever I am."
Sendhil is pleased with his children's cosmopolitan upbringing. "They speak Polish with my wife. They go to a French school. And my parents speak to them in Kannada. So either my children are going to be amazingly cosmopolitan, or they'll just be confused. I'll let you know."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 21 Apr 2010 | 7:33 am "Akki brings the same on table what Kishore Kumar did with his comic roles" - Sajid
At precisely 5.52pm I call Sajid Khan. The mobile gets connected and pat comes the voice from the other end; "You were to call me at 6pm, right?" informs Sajid. I wasn't late. Early can be eerie sometimes, and that isn't funny. The funny man was up and ready to take my call in the next eight minutes. That's how punctual he is. No kidding! Funny man Sajid Khan is all set to release his 'film that will break all box office records' (as quoted) on April 30. That means Housefull. It's near impossible to think of a more talented character in The Indian Film Fraternity than Sajid Khan. He's excelled in so many disciplines it's almost absurd. Writer, Director, Anchor, Actor. We can go on and on. So what happens when a director like Sajid Khan takes over from the funny man Sajid Khan? Well, there is bound to be bountiful of laughter in the house full of rubber faced guys showcasing their white teeth in the dark room. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent chats up with the most gifted, creative, effervescent, sometimes eccentric and many times humorous talent of Indian Films, the director of Housefull, Sajid Khan, where he, believe it or not, came across as a serious raconteur talking about houseful of talents in Housefull and one of his best comic film - Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. There is much more. A serious conversation begins.
How punctual is Sajid Khan?
I've always been extremely punctual. This habit comes from watching movies in theatres at an early age. I was a cine-goer from childhood and I never wanted to miss any trailer before the film started. Somewhere it has helped me as a director too. All my actors swear by my punctuality. Yes, you cannot always be punctual due to bad and mad traffic and that's where courtesy comes in too. I'm courteous too. I've always maintained that.
The first ever Indian Film to go on Blue Ray was Heyy Babyy your previous film as a director. Now with Housefull, you've started the first ever HD Video Blogs. Is Sajid unique in many ways?
It's not the question of being unique. I like doing things which people will enjoy, just a little more, than just watching the film. I work extremely hard on the making of my films. I like to get it as real as possible rather than EPK's (Electronic Press Kits) where the cast and the crew just sit next to the posters and say good things about each other. That's a little outdated. I like doing grungier and real things. Housefull's HD Blog says a lot more into what goes on to make a film.
You said that somewhere you need to be stopped in your imaginative thinking. But how unstoppable were your actors?
Luckily, they all just shut their eyes and followed me. Slowly but steadily, they're all saying, "Thank you very much Sajid. We trusted you and you didn't f*** up." All my cast listened to me and heard me out completely. I've made them do some bizarre stuff in the film. Stuff that they've never done in their life and in films. There is non-stop humour in the film. Housefull is a never-before-seen kind of a film.

In the absence of commercial flights to European countries producer Sajid Nadiadwala has no option but to hire private jets to take the prints of his on-release summer comedy Housefull to England and other European countries.
The volcanic ashes from Iceland has floated all the way to Bollywood...and nearly crashed into one the most mammoth summer release.
Sajid Khan's multi-starrer Housefull which releases next Friday (April 30) is in delivery doldrums. As per release rules the delivery overseas has to be made a week in advance of the release day.
Since most of the air traffic to Europe was still shut on Tuesday (with no sign of a partial let alone full recovery of flights for some days to come) Sajid Nadiadwala is in a state of panic.
"This is most unforeseen," he said on Tuesday, stressed and sleepless running helter-skelter looking for non-airborne means of transporting prints of Housefull to Europe.
Said the harrowed producer, "In all my years as a producer I've never encountered such a crisis. There're about a 100 prints to be taken into the Europe. Air traffic has come to a standstill. I'm hiring private jets to carry the prints to the nearest city with an open air base. From there the prints will be taken to various European cities by train or road. I'm so desperate I'm ready to employ any means of transportation...planes, trains, automobiles, whatever is available."
The added expenditure incurred by the paralysis of air traffic in Europe is the least of Nadiadwala's worries. "It doesn't really matter how much money it would cost. The important thing is to get the prints to the European centres on time. Or else the entire overseas release would be affected."
The harassed producer won't rest easy until a solution to the transportation deadlock is found. "It's been one crisis after another for me. First the underworld threats then this volcanic eruption."
So stressed is Sajid that he hasn't been able to enjoy the completion of his next project Anjaana Anjaani.
Says Sajid, "Ranbir Kapoor had a wrap-up party for Anjaana Anjaani. But I wasn't able to attend because of these two back-to-back crises at my workplace. Now I'll celebrate only when Housefull is released properly everywhere."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 21 Apr 2010 | 7:09 am Now Malaysians can make Bollywood dreams come trueIf you love dancing and have Bollywood dreams, register with the just launched Bollywood Academy for Dance and Acting.Source: Entertainment News | 21 Apr 2010 | 7:02 am Leaked climax of Kites is incorrect: DirectorDirector Anurag Basu says he is offended and disturbed by the reported leak of the climax of Kites even though that is not how the film ends. Close to six months after the release of De Dana Dan, Akshay Kumar would now be seen in Housefull. A gap between two of his outings is a mini record in itself for Akshay who was seen in as many as five big films in 2009.
Now that the promos of this Sajid Khan directed family entertainer have caught full steam ever since they were unleashed first close to one and a half months back, one can't help but wonder if there are any similarities whatsoever with Garam Masala here. After all just like the Priyadarshan comedy which had Akshay Kumar juggling between three girlfriends, this time around he has an even bigger problem in hands with as many as three wives (Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan).
"Come on now, Sajid Khan would never copy anything", comes an immediate reaction from Akshay who is currently stationed in Canada and shooting for Anees Bazmee's Thank You, "As for the plot of Housefull, you have to seriously wait for the film to release and then find out that how a 35 year old man (the character played by him), who has never had a girlfriend before in his life, ends up in a very difficult yet entirely innocent three lady dilemma."
"You'll never guess how or why, so don't bother, because this can only be Sajid's magic mind at work", laughs Akshay.
Well, one tends to trust Akshay when he says that. After all along with Sajid, he has worked in Heyy Babyy, three years back which was the biggest ever hit for a debutant director at that time. One tends to ask the actor though that when Sajid came up with the idea of Housefull, was he game for it there and then or did he actually wait for him to come back with a complete bound script and then consent to the film.
"Na na, not at all", says Akshay in obvious fondness for the filmmaker, "My heart and soul is wherever Sajid's is. He had me completely sold on Housefull the first time he gave me just a solitary scene idea. That man is mad. He is not only the funniest guy that I have ever met; he also carries tremendous confidence with him. No one can touch him and even if you were to try and mess with his logic, he will whip the carpet from underneath you."
In awe of the positive energy that Sajid carries, Akshay adds, "He is someone who will never agree that the glass is half empty. Instead, he will fill it with rocks just to prove you wrong. Well, of course unless it's his sister Farah, he shuts the hell up. But then we all do when it comes to Farah!"
Now that the film is barely 10 days away from release, one gets an impression - as rightly conveyed throughout the promotion of the film - that Housefull is a 'class meets mass' affair. Is that the right way to describe it?
"I couldn't have put it better myself", smiles Akshay, "I know for a fact that kids are going to love it, boyfriends will totally get it, girlfriends will cry in all the right places, aunties and uncles will be on the floors, and mothers will be tickled pink. All said and done, if we can make the Queen of England laugh, I'm sure India will be in stitches. Well, see how Sajid Khan is rubbing off on me now (winks)."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 21 Apr 2010 | 3:27 am ‘I’m a happy citizen’After weeks of relentless pursuit, we pin down Bollywood’s highest tax payer, Akshay Kumar, for a quick q-and-a, long distance.Source: | 21 Apr 2010 | 3:26 am Kim Kardashian defends Twitter cat picLondon (ANI): Socialite Kim Kardashian has defended herself over her cat photograph, saying she didn’t harm the kitty by any means. With his film, Ravaan, coming up for release and promos being aired, Abhishek definitely needs a break from his hectic schedule and who better than wife Aishwarya.

Don't go by the on-screen image that she has gained ever since her debut film Nishabd released a few years back. If Jiah Khan, one of the leading ladies of soon-to-be-released Housefull is to be believed, she is quite an introvert and doesn't quite jump with joy when asked to wear revealing outfits. Not just that, she is candid enough to admit that though she would be seen in a two piece bikini in this Sajid Khan directed multi starrer, it isn't everyday in her personal life that she roams around in such an outfit even during a holiday.
"Really, ever since the release of Nishabd, whenever people think of me, they believe that I would be quite comfortable wearing sexy clothes. The matter of the fact though is that this is completely untrue", states Jiah whose only other release after Nishabd has been Ghajini where she hadn't quite indulged in skin show.
Still, even when it comes to the reel life, Jiah isn't quite comfortable exposing for camera. Even when a filmmaker approaches her with a 'demand of the situation', she needs to be fully convinced.
"The setting of Housefull is such that there was a lot of travelling required across the globe. Also, some of the key scenes are set on a beach and it was imperative that all we leading ladies got into swimwear. Now when you are on a location like this, you don't quite roam around all covered up, right? What else would young girls wear when on beach? You have to go as per the mood and setting. It is the practical way of doing things", details Jiah who consented to wear a two piece bikini after Sajid Khan gave her a detailed account of the situation in the film.
Though Jiah understood his point of view, it wasn't quite easy for her to slip into the attire on the very first go. She was hesitant to begin with and was wondering how she would be presented on screen.
"It was actually quite difficult for me to wear a bikini. I am pretty demure when I am not on screen", Jiah gives an account of her real self, "Would you believe it that in real life, and I don't really wear bikinis even when I am on holidays. Also, frankly speaking, I don't really have much experience with swimwear. So I had to depend upon the people from the costume department of Housefull to help me make the best choice."
"I guess somehow the Nishabd image has stuck by me", sighs Jiah, "The fact though is entirely different. If you come to my house, you won't find me roaming around in hot pants. That's not the way it works actually. But then people are in a different impression altogether and it is actually quite a task for me to make them understand that my reel life and real life are two completely different things. I am actually quite an introvert and not as 'bindaas' as I am perceived to be."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 20 Apr 2010 | 4:45 am Bipasha Basu signed up as brand ambassador for Dabur Real Activ
The very name of Bipasha Basu not just spells 'sexy', 'hot' and 'oomph', but also spells 'Sugar Free', 'Vi John Feather Touch', 'Gili', 'Fa', 'Aristocrat luggage'... to name a few.
Well, now for a little homework. Simply pick up a pen and a paper and take down one more name. 'Dabur Real Activ' happens to be Bips' latest endorsement catch! In other words, Bipasha Basu has been signed up as the brand ambassador for Dabur Real Activ.
These days, it looks like Bips is one actress who has gone all out to be a health and fitness freak. First, it was her workout DVD, then came the Sugar Free thingy, and now comes Dabur Real Activ. Any guesses as to who is having the last (healthy) laugh now?Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 20 Apr 2010 | 4:20 am "Rani is my favourite actress" - Vidya Balan
In Delhi, Vidya has been shooting outdoors on the streets from dawn till 10.30 pm. And she is exhausted.
"There's no time to do anything. By the time we wrap up, all I want to do is crash out for the day. Sadly my sister stays in Gurgaon (on the outskirts of Delhi) and I haven't been able to meet her. She's a wife, mother and a jobholder. By the time she comes from work it's too late for us to meet up."
This is Vidya's first opportunity to shoot a film in Delhi. "I love the wide open spaces the broad streets and the crowded lanes. Rani and I have been shooting outdoors. Since she's my favourite actress from the immediately-senior generation, I am happy to be sharing camera space with her."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 20 Apr 2010 | 3:23 am Madhur Bhandarkar denies making film on IPL or Lalit Modi
Madhur Bhandarkar has slammed rumours making the rounds that he is going ahead and making a film on the life of Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi. Though these rumours had started close to six months back (around the release of Jail), they had died their natural death with the filmmaker coming up with an instant denial. However, now with more spice added to the entire affair courtesy the current situation that Modi and ex-Minister Shashi Tharoor have found themselves in, there was a buzz in the industry (yet again) that Bhandarkar may well begin work on the script and revive the film shortly.
Says a well placed industry source who has been closely following the progress of the entire episode surrounding the film (which supposedly also carries the title The Commissioner), "At one point in time, this film was a definite possibility since Lalit Modi was already in talks with Shailendra Singh from Percept. In fact Singh had also suggested the name of Madhur and there were talks of a big star being roped in to play Modi. However, Madhur never showed any interest since he was busy working on a couple of other scripts and wanted them to come on floors. He is surprised that tongues have started wagging all over again even though he had made his stand clear long time back."
Well, tongues had started wagging because of a very important development. There is confirmed news around Madhur's production house Bhandarkar Entertainment going ahead and registering titles like Cricket Politics aur Cheergirls and Cricket Politics and Models. No wonder, buzz was bound to become stronger as content of both the titles come quite close to what's actually happening in the life of Modi.
"Registering a title doesn't equate to a film being made", says a senior associate from Bhandarkar Entertainment, "These are mere insinuations and that's about it."
What does the man of the moment, Madhur Bhandarkar, have to say about the entire episode?
"Well, for the record, let me state once for and all that I am not making any film on Lalit Modi or IPL. Period. These are just baseless speculations which carry no substance whatsoever", says Bhandarkar without mincing any words, "I don't know why this news has started making the rounds all over again. I already have things on my plate to be taken care of. There are two scripts that are almost in the final stages and I would rather expend my energies there rather than begin something afresh."
Guess this should stop the tongues wagging now!Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 20 Apr 2010 | 3:08 am Hrithik and Barbara shooting in Maldives today
Barbara Mori who quietly arrived in Mumbai on Monday morning left on Tuesday morning with Hrithik Roshan to shoot an ad campaign for Provogue.
The Roshans wish to keep her visit to a city that the Mexican actress now knows so well, as low-key as possible until she returns from the Maldives on April 22 for a series of press interactions in Mumbai.
Hrithik wrapped up the final few days of his shooting with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Guzaarish before Barbara's arrival. Both Hrithik and his wife Sussanne gladly played Barbara's host on her arrival on Monday.
Speaking on her current visit to India, Rakesh Roshan said, "We don't want to create any unnecessary hype about her presence. But we do want to make it clear that we didn't sign Barbara for Kites because we needed any Caucasian girl. Barbara is not just a pretty girl. She is an amazing actress. You have to see her in Cosas Insignificantes where she had shaved off her hair. She is an outstanding dramatic actress."
Barbara spent Monday in Mumbai with the Roshans and left early on Tuesday morning for the Maldives, prepared to return to Mumbai to a barrage of questions on her friendship with Hrithik which, apparently she is ready to tackle.
She leaves Mumbai on May 2 and will join Hrithik for the US premieres of Kites.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 20 Apr 2010 | 3:02 am
