Industry Roundup: Cybill Shepherd to Play Love Hewitt’s Mom

Shepherd Teams With Hewitt: Cybill Shepherd will star alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt in an upcoming, untitled Lifetime original movie. Shepherd will play a body waxer at a salon who learns that her daughter (Hewitt) is working as a prostitute to make ends meet. "This is totally my Pretty Woman," Hewitt was overheard telling an In Touch reporter she paid to meet her for lunch. [HR]

Carey Says 'WTF': Drew Carey is developing a hidden-camera show for CBS tentatively called WTF which, in this case, stands for “Wow That’s Funny!” Carey and others will “wreak havoc in public places” on the show, as the group will “pull benevolent pranks on deserving citizens” in a flash mob-esque fashion. In response to this premise we say "STFU" which, in this case, does not stand for “Shut the Funny Up.” [HR]

Thune in Right Lane: Nick Thune will replace Patton Oswalt in Beach Lane, the NBC comedy pilot starring Matthew Broderick. Oswalt had been originally cast in the role but was let go after the table read. As if getting the heave-ho wasn’t embarrassing enough for Oswalt, he now has to deal with being replaced by a comedian whose most prominent on-camera role so far is playing what was billed as “Alison's Friend” in Knocked Up. [Deadline]

Crossed Gets Go-ahead: Garth Ennis’s apocalyptic horror comic-book series Crossed will be adapted for the big screen. A first version of the script has already been written by Ennis and is now being shown to directors. Similar to the way in which Kick-Ass was funded, the project will be independently financed and produced by Trigger Street Productions, a decision they may be kicking themselves in the ass for after seeing this weekend’s box-office returns. [Variety]

Retired Works for Network: TV Land has picked up the pilot Retired at 35, a multi-camera sitcom starring George Segal and Johnathan McClain. The series follows a young businessman (McClain) who decides to leave the pressure cooker of New York City for his father’s (Segal's) Florida retirement home. The show also stars Jessica Walter (Arrested Development) and Casey Wilson (Saturday Night Live). This guy’s decision to move to a retirement home makes even less sense knowing he’s electing to live where Lucille Bluth hangs. [Deadline]

Air Travel in Europe May Resume Monday

After a four-day reign, the volcanic ash that has blanketed the skies of Europe looks to be subsiding, and authorities are hoping that close to 50 percent of grounded Europe flights will operate Monday, according to the European Union. The disaster has already cost the airlines at least $1 billion so far in lost revenue, and the airlines are pressing for “an immediate reassessment of the present restrictions” after several major airlines flew successful test flights without passengers over Europe today. Times: Top Goldman Executives Were Actively Involved in Mortgage Unit

According to a Times report out tonight, top executives at Goldman Sachs played a key role in overseeing the mortgage unit now being targeted by the SEC. Though company vice-president Fabrice Tourre was the only one named in the suit, there were reportedly many others who were aware of the development of the “Abacus investment” mortgage deals, the Times says, based on interviews with eight former Goldman employees who, of course, wished to remain anonymous.

“Senior bank executives played a pivotal role in overseeing the mortgage unit just as the housing market began to go south,” Times reporter Louise Story writes, “… Executives up to and including Lloyd C. Blankfein, the chairman and chief executive, took an active role in overseeing the mortgage unit as the tremors in the housing market began to reverberate through the nation’s economy. It was Goldman’s top leadership that finally ended the dispute on the mortgage desk by siding with those who, like Tourre and [Jonathan] Egol, believed home prices would decline.”

Spokesman Lucas van Praag has maintained that senior executives were not involved in the deals under investigation, and Tourre and Egol declined to speak with the Times for the story. With this, news of the upcoming $5 billion bonuses, and rumors of imminent charges from Germany and the U.K., it's not the greatest Sunday for Goldman.

Final Lost Cast Photo Potentially Reveals Clue

With just about a month left until the Lost series finale (a month, you guys!), there is really nothing on the Internet that Lost fanatics aren’t scouring for potential clues. Over the weekend, the final Lost cast photo was released (check it out here) that (SPOILER ALERT), curiously, includes a character who has just recently died (well, in the island universe, at least), Ilana, but doesn’t include a character who at the moment figures quite prominently in both the island and flash-sideways worlds: Desmond. Like most things relating to this show, this would probably make us anxious if we understood what it meant. [The Live Feed/HR]

MTV Has Nothing to Do With Jersey Shore ‘Imitations’

In light of recent reports of the development of everything from a Boston edition of Jersey Shore (tentatively called Wicked Summer) to a Persian-American brand (which is, yes, referred to as the "Persian Version" in the leaked casting notice), MTV has set the record straight and clarified in the Times that the network is not involved in any of these so-called imitations. Despite this news, the new versions will use the same casting director as Jersey Shore, Doron Ofir, which means the world's great hopes for a Bostonian "Situation" or a Persian JWOWW need not be extinguished. Pope Meets With Abuse Victims for First Time

We've all been there.

For the first time since the sexual-abuse scandal came to light months ago, Pope Benedict XVI left the Vatican today to meet with a small group of victims of sexual abuse by priests. The pope was reportedly brought to tears during the meeting in Malta, where he met with eight Maltese men who said they were molested by priests when they were children living in a Malta orphanage. According to the Vatican, the pope “was deeply moved by their stories and expressed his shame and sorrow over what victims and their families have suffered.”

“He prayed with them and assured them that the church is doing, and will continue to do, all in its power to investigate allegations, to bring to justice those responsible for abuse and to implement effective measures designed to safeguard young people in the future,” the Vatican statement continued.

It would appear the scandal is taking a visible toll on the pope, as he was spotted briefly falling asleep at mass this morning after the meeting.

Headlining Coachella, MGMT Leave the ‘Kids’ at Home

We’re all familiar with the searing disappointment of a band inexplicably not playing that one song you love during their show. Well, now imagine the concert is the monster of all concerts (Coachella), the band one of the buzziest there is right now (MGMT), and the song (“Kids”) one that Rolling Stone named as among the top 100 songs of the decade. The Brooklyn-based duo played most of their less-accessible second album at the music festival today, yet chose not to play one of their three hits, angering tweeting fans and bloggers alike. Remains to be seen if fans will be getting another apology, or if, as they said about response to their second album, they just "don't give a shit." [Idolator]

Bill Clinton Says He and Hillary Are ‘Too Old’ for Supreme Court

A week after the White House shot down rumors that Hillary Clinton was being considered for the vacant Supreme Court seat, hubby Bill said today neither he nor Hillary would be right for the job for one reason: They’re too old.

"I'd like to see [Obama] put someone in there, late 40s, early 50s, on the court, and someone with a lot of energy for the job," Clinton, 63, said on ABC’s This Week today. “And I don’t think that [I’d] be a good choice.”

He said that while his wife, who is 62, would be a “great” Supreme Court justice and “at one point in her life she might have been interested in it,” he said that she would agree with his advice for Obama “to appoint someone 10, 15 years younger.” Additionally, Clinton said, Bill and Hillary would rather be “doing” things, as opposed to sitting in a boring ol' courtroom all day.

“She’s like me, you know, we’re kind of doers," he said. "We like being out there and doing things, rowing our own boat and making changes we could see happen.”

So in yet another display of his Clinton-ish powers, Bill managed to essentially call his wife old and the Supreme Court lazy in one interview without coming off like a total schmuck.

Gay Superheroes Fly Into New York City

According to today's "Sunday Styles" section, it's easier to be a gay comic-book fan now than ever before. It's not just that society is more accepting of gays and nerds, but gay comic-book fans are finding they're not alone — like those who regularly attend Skin Tight U.S.A., a "costume-fetish party" at the Stonewall Inn. The party provides a chance for regular guys to dress up like superheroes and hang with like-minded dudes in "muscle-cuddling garb often leaves little to the imagination." And today it provided the Times with a chance to explore the gay comic-book subculture.

They are coming out, loud and proud, in blogs, peer groups, Web comics and more, simultaneously pronouncing their sexual identity and their devotion to comic books.

Just when we were about to write this article off as an attempt by the Times to manufacture a subculture of gay comic-book fans who dress up like Batman and prowl the streets of Manhattan, it turns into a pretty interesting take on gays and lesbians in comics. But that's kind of disappointing, because who wants to talk about interesting things when you've got this guy.

Did TBS Strong-arm George Lopez Into Supporting Conan?

In the six days since TBS announced that Conan would make the cable network his new home, George Lopez, that other guy with a late-night show on TBS, has gone out of his way to welcome Conan. Not only did he pretty much beg Conan to join TBS, but he said he emphatically declared himself a member of Team Coco. You can't be much more supportive than that.

But since this is show business, it can't all be wrapped up with a nice bow. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that "Page Six" is now reporting that Lopez was basically strong-armed into moving his show to make way for Conan. According to the report, TBS told Lopez, who wasn't keen on moving his show, that if he didn't welcome Conan his show would be canceled after this season. Even worse, TBS has made it in Conan's interest for Lopez to fail since Coco's company gets to develop new programming if Lopez Tonight is ever canceled. TBS has denied the report, and we'd like to think it's not true either. The budding bromance between Conan and Lopez is downright adorable.

Dragon Takes Box Office Yet Again

How to Train Your Dragon made $20 million this weekend, enough to claim the top spot at the box office and barely beat out Kick-Ass and its $19.8 million haul. Date Night finished the weekend in third place with $17.3 million, and Death at a Funeral was just behind with $17 million. Clash of the Titans rounded out the top five with $15.7 million. Chuck Schumer and His Special Sandwich

This monstrosity of a sandwich is what Senator Chuck Schumer's staff calls the Schumwich. It's his fave. The ingredients are roast beef, banana peppers, pickled jalapeños, extra onions, extra tomatoes, two layers of pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard on Italian bread. And if staffers don't get it right, they can prepare for a tongue-lashing. Schumer is serious about his extra pickles and has been known to yell at aides: "Did you ask for extra pickles? Did you watch them put them on, or did you not focus on it?" Scary. [NYP]

Top Bronx Detective Accused of Sexual Harassment, Sending Schmaltzy Texts

NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Gabriel, the top detective in the Bronx, is in trouble for trying to win the love of Detective Dawn DelValle-Sanchez with, among other unwelcome advances, Twilight-referencing texts. DelValle-Sanchez has accused Gabriel of sexual harassment for his inappropriate obsession with her cleavage and repeatedly rubbing her neck after she suffered a herniated disc. When DelValle-Sanchez got mad, Gabriel evoked Edward and Bella to set things right:

"I ask for ur forgiveness and another chance (Think Bella forgiving Jacob)"

"I will accept any penalty; hard labor, probation, a time out. ... Do werewolves kill humans just like vampires?"

We're not sure what's worse, the official trouble he may get in with the NYPD or the fact that the entire force now knows how familiar he is with Twilight.

Conservatives Zero in on Elena Kagan E-mail

Former Harvard Law School dean Elena Kagan hasn't even been nominated for the Supreme Court but conservatives already have a line of attack planned. It centers on an e-mail Kagan sent four months after she landed the gig at Harvard. The topic: the presence of military recruiters on campus, which violated the school's anti-discrimination policy. But if Harvard banned the recruiters it would risk losing federal funding for the entire campus. Here's what Kagan wrote:

"This action causes me deep distress," Kagan wrote that morning in October 2003. "I abhor the military's discriminatory recruitment policy." It is, she said, "a profound wrong — a moral injustice of the first order."

It's hardly inflammatory and it's not a unique opinion, but it's enough to rile up the right. The president of one conservative think tank said Kagan's reaction seems "fit for something like the Holocaust" and that, "if she is the nominee, that is an angle that I would press." We're betting there are a lot of conservatives who agree with him. As long as everyone on talk radio and Fox News can find one line of attack, especially if it paints Kagan as an un-American opponent of the military, they've got a chance of derailing her nomination. Of course, she hasn't even been nominated yet so they should probably get back to digging though all of the other potential nominees' trash.

Foes may target Kagan's stance on military recruitment at Harvard [WP]

Saturday Night Live Recap: Ryan Phillippe Has Muscles

Quick, without looking at that picture, can you remember who hosted SNL last night? Give up? It was Ryan Phillippe. We almost forgot too. On a night that saw the appearance of characters old (Target Lady) and new (Mort Mort Feingold), Phillippe was almost an afterthought. He didn't appear in the weak cold open that was dominated by Kristen Wiig's giggly Bjork impression and he didn't do much in his own monologue, which we've almost completely forgotten in our excitement about the possibility of a "What Up With That?" movie. The few memorable moments the host did provide occurred when he was able to show off his muscles. No wonder Phillippe has been missing for the past five years; he was working out! We would have never guessed it, but Phillippe totally gave Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Lautner competition for the title of buffest host of season.

Phillippe getting to host SNL has struck us as odd ever since it was announced, but at least we knew he would bring with him a few MacGruber sketches, since it's the film version of the 20-second sketch that he's promoting. Oops, we were wrong. There was no MacGruber in a night that could have used some explosions. Not that it was all bad—"ESPN Classic," "Shake Weight" and "Hip Hop Kids" were well done, but the rest of the episode was what SNL is these days: mediocre, providing just enough laughs to keep the audience watching but never enough to send milk pouring out of noses.

Then there was Ke$ha, whose performances weren't very good musically, which is totally fine. No one expects a good musical performance from Ke$ha. They expect a song you can make fun of and an entertaining performance. She provided both of those, even if her astronaut dancers and tribal, glow-in-the-dark paint reminded us of Lady Gaga and how much weirder she would have made the performances.

Best
Though the commercial parody of the Shake Weight was spot-on and our love for "ESPN Classic" hosts Pete Twinkle and Greg Stink continues to grow and Father Swimcoach Scoutmaster was an inspired, if disturbing, character, SNL's visit with the Thrilla Killa Klownz was our favorite sketch of the night. Not only did Bobby Moynihan and Phillippe look just like I.C.P., but the lyrics to their song “Magical Mysteries” could have been ripped straight from the song they were parodying, the magical "Miracles." The timing of this sketch was right on and because of that it has a chance to live a second life on the internet, which can't really be said of any other sketch from last night.

Worst
Not even Andy Samberg's perfectly-awkward impression of a mumbling teenager could save "Teen Talk," and its one joke ("What? I can't hear you"). While we like the idea of a fat, bald producer sitting in for the host of a touchy-feely advice show, this sketch never seemed to go beyond that initial idea. Since this isn't the first time we're seen it, you can, unfortunately, count on seeing it again.
