John Paulson Responds to Charges Against Goldman Sachs

On the heels of the SEC director's statement that hedge-fund manager John Paulson would not be charged with any wrongdoing for the 2007 deal it made with Goldman Sachs — in which the firm agreed to allow the hedge-fund manager to structure a bond both parties knew would fail, but neglected to mention that to the investors it sold it to — Paulson and Company has issued a statement.

It can pretty much be summed up as "Goldman's clients aren't our problem."

As the SEC said at its press conference, Paulson is not the subject of this complaint, made no misrepresentations and is not the subject of any charges.

While Paulson purchased credit protection from Goldman Sachs on securities issued under the ABACUS ABS CDO program, we were not involved in the marketing of any ABACUS products to any third parties.

ACA as collateral manager had sole authority over the selection of all collateral in the CDO, securities of which were subsequently rated AAA by both S&P and Moody's.

Paulson did not sponsor or initiate Goldman's ABACUS program, which involved at least 20 transactions other than that described in the SEC's complaint.

Technically, of course, they're right. They simply dangled the one thing in Goldman's face that they knew they couldn't resist— money — and let them fall all over themselves to get it. A lot of people got trampled, but it was Goldman that did the trampling, not Paulson. Incidentally, we hear Paulson and Company is short Goldman Sachs, now.

If John Paulson Had Been Nicer to Paolo Pelligrini, This Whole Goldman Thing Might Have Been Avoided

Paulson and Pelligrini.

Paolo Pelligrini was in a dark place when John Paulson hired him in 2004. He'd been fired — twice — divorced twice, and was generally down on his luck. "I was forty-five and had zero net worth," Pelligrini told WSJ reporter Greg Zuckerman in his book The Greatest Trade Ever. "And from my perspective, I had no prospects." But he was ambitious and smart, and when Paulson agreed to take a chance on him, he made it worth his while. It was Pelligrini who convinced Paulson of the existence of a housing bubble, and who, using the resources of the firm, was instrumental in helping Paulson make the trade that netted him billions and Pelligrini millions. You'd think they'd be grateful to one another and thrilled to work together again. But no. In fact, Pelligrini seems to have turned against Paulson. In December 2008, he left the firm to start his own hedge fund, and the two reportedly no longer speak. And today, CNBC reported that Pelligrini may have been the one to tip off the SEC about the unsavory, if not illegal, deal Paulson made with Goldman Sachs that led to securities charges being filed against them. If true, as Business Insider has noted, this would be a "major middle finger to his old boss," since it subjects Paulson to at the very least, increased scrutiny. Why would Pelligrini throw the man who plucked him from obscurity and made him a multimillionaire under a bus? Ego, basically. Pelligrini feels that Paulson has never given him enough credit.

Witness this rather poignant scene from The Greatest Trade Ever.

In January 2008, Paulson and Pellegrini visited Harvard University, their alma mater. Pellegrini was excited about the trip and looked forward to explaining to the students how the firm had anticipated the credit crisis. But when they got there and the class settled into their seats, Paulson approached the dais and addressed the group by himself, while Pellegrini watched from the back of the room. Later, Pellegrini helped his boss answer some questions from students, but it stung Pellegrini that he wasn’t invited to address the class. Paulson’s shadow never seemed so huge. “It was humiliating to me,” Pellegrini recalls.

Hell hath no fury like a hedge-fund manager scorned, we guess.

Schumer Stands Firm, Antagonizes Wall Street

Over the past twenty years, Chuck Schumer has received $7.7 million in campaign contributions from the securities and investment sector, more than any other non-presidential politician. So it's no wonder his supportive stance for the Senate's financial regulation bill has many on Wall Street outraged and accusing him of turning against them. But rather than try to appease his big donors, Schumer is taking a publicly defiant position, holding a Washington press conference yesterday to re-affirm his principles, and contributing a firm opinion column to the New York Post — a paper whose own editorial board had criticized his position. "In a situation like this, I believe you have to trust your internal gyroscope, resist pressure from both sides and find the proper ground," he writes. "Polling data show New Yorkers, both Republicans and Democrats, agree with this approach." Not that anyone ever doubted that for Chuck Schumer "polling data" and "internal gyroscopes" are the same thing.

Titus Andronicus Loves Weezer, Too

There were some notable MP3s released onto the Internet today, but since it’s right around closing time on a Friday, Right-Click feels it is much more appropriate to forgo any attempt to make salient, enlightening points about them and instead just throw up this YouTube clip and get out of the way: Vivian Girl’s Cassie Ramone and Titus Andronicus, in Philadelphia last night, teaming up to lovingly slay Weezer’s “Undone — The Sweater Song.” Look how much fun they’re having! And that’s only like the fifth best song on The Blue Album.

A Perfect Addition to the Half-Hooker Economy: Chelsea’s New Hotel for Models

UrbanDaddy newsletters are such a Friday-afternoon treat. Today's came with the subject line "Models. A Hotel. You." Oooooh! Us, REALLY? Well, technically no, not us, really, but models, really. And rich men who want to ogle them, really. The half-hooker economy expands its reach in the hospitality area from nightclubs to Fashion 26, a new Wyndham Hotels gimmick conceived to reel in fashion models. Models, agencies, and designers get discounts on the 280 rooms, and the hotel doesn't charge extra if agencies want to cram extra girls into a room. So they can theoretically put as many girls in one room as they want.

UrbanDaddy knows what this is really about. Not models, but men who want to be near them. And they are gloating:

Chilled champagne upon arrival. A concierge with 8pm reservations at Minetta Tavern. Bath towels folded into animals.

Yet you've always felt something was missing from your hotel experience. Something like ... fashion models.

Parading through the lobby. Bikini-clad, sharing an elevator to the rooftop sunbathing deck. Having pillow fights in the room across the hall.

... If all goes according to plan, you'll be able to wander over after a night at the Ainsworth or Black Door and pull up a seat in the lobby bar, where you might find girls kicking back in Converse All-Stars, comparing tan lines and celery stick recipes.

Pish posh — models have neither tan lines nor celery stick recipes. But this is a mildly interesting addition to the half-hooker economy. Whereas in nightclubs models don't have to pay up front to get through the door, here both parties have to pay to stay. Does that make the models (or their agents) self-employed half-pimps?

Melania Trump Is Completely Devoid of Personality, Paper Reports

Have you ever wondered what Melania Trump, the third wife of Donald, is actually like? She must have some kind of personality, right? You don't move to America from Slovenia and have an international modeling career and marry a famous, hugely flamboyant real-estate mogul without having ambition or drive, or, you know, some thoughts. So what is she like? What goes on behind those piercing eyes? The Times' Douglas Quenqua looked into it over lunch at the Trumps' gilded apartment and as it turns out — and keep in mind, this is not an opinion or a "take," the Times is a serious new organization, they just report the facts — the answer is nothing. Absolutely, straight-up nothing.

Indeed, she is not one for self-reflection. Asked if a person ever gets used to living among such opulence, she replied, without irony or humor: “Yeah, you get used to it. Yeah."

So, now you know.

Is Mad Men Half Over?

Noooooo.

The world really will end in 2012! This week, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner reportedly announced that the show won't go beyond six seasons. Weiner is said to have "unceremoniously" revealed the news at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, where he participated in a Q&A Tuesday night. Weiner's fixed-end-date decision (which he's hinted at before) is similar to those made by the creators of The Sopranos and Lost. While it's hard to imagine a Mad Men–less summer and early fall, it's even harder to contemplate Don Draper disco dancing at Studio 54, now isn't it? [Weekly Blend]

Not Having a Prenup Is a Great Reason to Try to Work Things Out

This week, the 76-year-old, miraculously eight-times-married Larry King filed for divorce from his beautiful wife, Shawn Southwick. Later in the week, we learned that there was no prenup for their 1997 marriage — meaning that Southwick could go for half of his estimated $144 million fortune. Then today came headlines that the couple is attempting to reconcile. "Sources intimately familiar with the situation tell TMZ, Shawn and Larry both say they love each other and both would like to figure out how to work things out, but there's one little thing standing in the way," TMZ writes. "Shawn believes Larry is still shtupping her sister." Still, the pair is meeting with a marriage counselor on Monday. Now, the prospect of losing half of your money seems like a pretty good reason to try to work things out. But presumably Larry already knew he didn't have a prenup with her. So maybe this is true love? Or maybe Larry talked to CNN and realized the renewal prospects for his multi-million-dollar multi-year contract, which is up in roughly a year, weren't as promising as he may have thought.

James Ivory on The City of Your Final Destination and What It Means to Be a ‘Merchant Ivory Film’

James Ivory is synonymous with a particular kind of film; usually a period piece, often a romance starring Anthony Hopkins and/or Helena Bonham Carter, and pretty much always immaculately produced. His latest, The City of Your Final Destination, may not be a period piece, but it does have Anthony Hopkins, and it is, on some level, a romance. The film also marks a poignant crossroads for the Berkeley-born American filmmaker: It was the first made entirely without producer Ismail Merchant, Ivory's longtime partner, who died in 2005. Ivory recently sat down with Vulture to talk about the difficulties of adapting Peter Cameron’s novel, missing Merchant, and about what constitutes a “Merchant Ivory film.”

One senses that this film was a very personal project for you. There’s even footage in the film from one of your earliest films, Venice: Themes and Variations.
This film was something that Ismail and I wanted to do, very much. I felt that after he died and I had finished with The White Countess, I would just go on with our plans and do it. The footage in the film, it’s some of the footage I had in my thesis film at USC, and it’s sort of there accidentally. We had another plan, to use some marvelous footage taken in the thirties at the particular houses we had filmed in, but the family didn’t want to let us use it. So I finally gave up on the idea and decided that since the film has a lot to do with Venice and memories of Venice, that I’d just use the footage from my own film.

This was the first film you produced entirely without Ismail Merchant, your longtime partner. What was that like?
Well, I miss him, very much. But it was a well-run production down in South America. It was a pleasant place to be, though it was very hot. Many of us had worked with Ismail before, and it had always been a great joy when he came on the set, so obviously we remembered that. But apart from that, I just felt that I had to get on with this film.

Your films have always been notable for the presence of actors from very different traditions, with very different styles.
I think I was, in a way, brought up to do that, from our films we made in India. Those actors were from completely different traditions. Some actors came right out of the Bollywood film industry. Mixed with them were other actors, like the Kendals from Shakespeare Wallah. And we were always working with people from different nationalities, with different accents, in English. It was always something I had to do, whether I liked it or not. And sometimes it’s not easy, particularly because of the accent situation.

How do you do it? When other directors try that sort of thing, they usually wind up with actors who look like they’re in different movies.
That happens in our movies, too. I’ve seen things in our films years later and thought, “Well, that actor is really in another universe.” Some of the films we made in the seventies I think of sometimes like that. I hadn’t sorted it all out yet.

Are you hands-on with the actors?
It’s my responsibility to listen to them and to see what they’ve brought and not start tearing it to bits — to let them present it. I can never imagine sometimes what they’re going to come up with. When we were doing Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, Paul Newman gave us a characterization that was so unlike anything I’d have expected from him. Paul Newman came out of another world, out of Hollywood, an utterly different milieu than a Kansas City law office in the forties. But he really surprised us there. And it totally came out of his father. His father was like my father, in the way they reacted to life, even in the way they dressed.

Do you feel like sometimes your work gets pigeonholed because of some of its surface elements — people will say something is “like a Merchant Ivory film,” just because it’s a period romance or whatever?
I do feel that. We are pigeonholed in exactly that way — “like a Merchant Ivory film.” I mean, I think of a Merchant Ivory film as very well written and very well acted and visually beautiful. [Laughs] I don’t think of it as a Merchant Ivory film just because it has old cars or carriages and long dresses in it.

Is there less interest in your films today from the industry?

It’s more that the industry was very interested in us for a while, after Room with a View. People saw that we could take $3.5 million and make $75 million from it, as if we had some kind of secret formula. That’s what they thought. They were willing to bet on us for quite a while. Even right up through The White Countess, which was financed by Sony. If you think about it, though, that was a very strange story, not your usual box-office thing. I do think they’re still interested in what I would want to do.

Apple to Fix Ticketing Business?

Apple recently filed a patent that reveals the company might be working on a concert-ticketing system that would allow users to buy event passes in iTunes and redeem them by showing their iPhones at venues. If the company actually released such a thing, it would give them a shot at monopolizing both recorded and live music, and still nobody would complain, because Apple's system would be sexier and way less terrible than Ticketmaster's. Patricia Field Isn’t That Sad That Ugly Betty Is Over

Patricia Field is looking at the bright side of losing her costume-design gig on the canceled series Ugly Betty. “I enjoyed it, it was great. I was satisfied with it, it’s over,” she mused when we ran into her this week at the premiere of the HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack. And she’s even a little relieved to be able to concentrate on shorter projects. “Actually, I’m trying to ease up a little on that everyday go-to-work thing with movies and TV shows. So I’m kind of happy it’s created a little time for me to not be crazy. Because I was pretty crazy; I was doing Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, and every other thing,” she said.

Field’s ongoing projects include consulting on advertisements, collaborations with accessories brands, and, of course, her store. “I have many things going on, so this is just letting me do it and take a breath in between.” And this entrepreneur, who landed on top of the fashion heap after starting out catering to drag queens in the Village, is now looking east. “I’m really into spreading out into China. I’m starting to do that; it’s good,” Field told us. She’s already done the costumes for one Chinese movie called Go Du Lala, Go, directed by the Chinese actress Xu Jinglei. But we won’t be seeing a House of Field boutique in Beijing any time soon; Field says she’s mainly focusing on collaborations in China for now.

Investors Salivating Over Bankrupt Rock & Republic

Rock & Republic recently filed for bankruptcy, but it plans to keep operations running as smoothly as possible. They've hired some fancy suit-wearing types to get their finances in order and recruit some new investors. Those fancy suit-wearing sorts of people are reportedly all kinds of eager to invest in the label. Meanwhile, the label plans to refocus on its core apparel.

"We’re slowing the expansion of diffusion lines. The brand is what we need to protect and we need to improve our shipping record in our branded goods. The problem was our senior lender put a crimp in that,” [chief restructuring officer Geoffrey D. Lurie] said.

Rock & Republic's core apparel centered around $200 jeans, which the recession mostly pushed to the sale rack, ushering in what seemed to be a new, perhaps lasting age of affordable denim. But with their diffusion lines on hold, Levi's launching $200 jeans, and Hudson launching $995 jeans, that age sadly may not survive its infancy as the economy shows signs of recovery.

Marvin Traub, who was recently hired as strategic adviser to Rock & Republic, said many candidates have shown interest in investing, since the brand has "a personality and a niche of its own." Traub was spotted this week having lunch at the Harvard Club with Michael Kramer, CEO of Kellwood Co. Traub was coy about the meeting, saying only that they "were talking broadly about business." Sure. We can just see them in there, relishing the seats they paid exorbitant dues to sit in, conspiring to revive the overpriced denim movement. The Harvard Club — founded for people used to ridiculously overpaying for everything — would be the nexus of such conspiracies.

Does Being Gay Help You Get Into College?

According to the Times, which profiled gay college-recruiting events for its "Education Life" section, it doesn't. "Being gay does not lend an advantage, and the embrace is not universal inside admissions offices," writes Josh Schwartz. But more and more students are including gay story lines in their admissions essays, and there are a lot of scholarship programs specifically for LGBT youth. The very existence of gay-targeted recruiting events raises the question: When schools pick and choose candidates for a "diverse campus," including giving different weights to race, economic status, and geographic background, where does being gay fit in? If we'd written this story for the Times, that is what we'd have wanted to know.

Party Lines Slideshow: After an SNL Panel, Lorne Michaels Says Betty White Is Finally Ready to Host

At the Academy of Television Arts & Science’s panel discussion, “An Evening with Saturday Night Live,” moderated by Jimmy Fallon, Lorne Michaels clarified the backstory on how he ended up casting Betty White to host the Mother’s Day edition of the show on May 8. He said he’d actually thought about casting White as early as February, when she was at an Academy event honoring Don Pardo, and “she was unbelievably funny and charming, a real strong presence. The Facebook campaign [to pressure Michaels into getting White to host] was just beginning, and then it started gaining momentum, and we were all aware of it. The audience cast it.” And then Michaels called White — as well as Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, Rachel Dratch, Molly Shannon, and Maya Rudolph — and a Mother’s Day Special was born. (Jay-Z will be the musical guest.) But, honestly, why had it taken THIS long for White to get her first hosting gig on SNL? “I’m sure we offered Betty White the show in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, as well,” said Michaels, wearily. “And she’s 88 now, so, um, she’s ready.” See more from SNL cast members in our Party Lines slide show.

Penelope Princess of Pets Trailer: Kristen Schaal Is International Now

Last summer we told you about Penelope Princess of Pets — a web-series created by and starring Flight of the Conchords' Kristen Schaal, playing a girl who can talk to animals — getting picked up by England’s Channel 4. We had totally forgotten about it until just now, when the show’s trailer, fulfilling its inherent life-purpose, reminded us. Turns out Channel 4 actually paid for a production cycle and isn’t just airing the original shorts, although all oddball aesthetics and general lo-fi-ness appear to have been maintained. The only significant addition is an awesome one: The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt is playing a member of Parliament that the animals are telling Penelope to kill. Ok, here’s the question, then — can we infer from Penelope getting a full-on series order that England’s current television-production community is really weird? Or, considering that they have to import quirky alt-comedy, are they, perhaps, not weird enough?

Penélope Cruz, Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow Wear Gap on the Cover of May’s French Vogue

Shot by Inez and Vinoodh.

Penélope Cruz guest-edited next month's French Vogue, which has three different covers. On one, she appears alongside Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, and Gwyneth Paltrow (who can smile the biggest, apparently); all ladies appear to be wearing tees from Gap's (Product) Red collection. On another cover, she poses as the other half of Bono's face, and on the third, she toplessly embraces Meryl Streep. This is a surprising, very Hollywood direction for a magazine that loves models so much.

Gossip Girl Has Become the Person You Always Thought She Was

This week's Gossip Girl brought all our characters together with a wedding (finally, a plausible excuse for them all to be at the same event), but the episode's events forced our players, and you, commenters, apart in heart. There was much debate over Blair and Chuck's demise, Lily's terrible lying skills, and cultural stereotypes. However, you did all agree on your love for Cyrus Rose. Give that man more episodes, writers! Anyway, on to your best comments, compiled this week by longwayfrombrooklyn.

Realer Than Vodka by the Bucket at a Traditional UES Wedding
• Eleanor "I was going to get them a Vera Wang cake knife" Plus 3 for excruciating thoughtlessness. — iheartintel

• Chuck standing next to amazon model type reminds us all just how short he is. short and hairy. like a hobbit. but still hot. Plus 5 — chuckbassismybabydaddy

• Also Plus 5 for Eleanor still treating Dan like a cater waiter. Eleanor is the best. — twinsfindme

Plus 100 for Cyrus's return. Plus an additional 100 for any one episode focusing largely on Cyrus, Dorota and Eric. Plus an additional 100 for that very episode featuring no Vanessa, and plus yet another 100 for Chuck's line about Nate and Serena debating whose hair is shinier. They really do write this for us now. — purpleandgreen

• How is it that Cyrus Rose has the best hair on this show? WTF, is the CW too poor to employ hairstylists?! — legallybecks

• At least 5 references to Blair's bulimia in this episode: Zofran, actual use of the word vomit, Blair coming out from her bathroom, staring at the buffet, being late to the pre-wedding ceremony, what else? Plus 5 because at least we didn't blink and miss it. Now bring it back as a full-blown storyline sometime in season 4, ok? — signaturescarf

• chuck's crying scene in the dream is completely over the top and fake. Such an accurate representation of those old timey movies back when people thought the signature of a good actor was being as insanely dramatic as possible. plus 50. — pepsimax

• Of course what really matters to Chuck is whether Jack and Blair actually had sex; the fact he just used the supposed love of his life to get his hotel back, all the while trying to make it sound as though she wanted to have sex with the guy who almost raped his stepmother is completely irrelevant to him at this point. Plus 20, because he is a hormonal young boy, after all. On the other hand, minus 50 because I thought Chuck was better than that. —awakebeauty

• Jenny wears a dress stolen straight out of Serena's closet at the reception while she is trying to steal her man. Plus 2. — rip_chair

• And is it just me or did they style Dorota's hair like Blair's just so when they had their "heart to heart" moment, they could look like sisters. Albeit one WASP sister to one Polish sister but whatever plus 5 — spelumbia

• While Palm Beach is a believable place for William van der Woodsen to visit, it also contains one of the largest populations of gossipy old-money women in the world. There's no way someone wouldn't have spotted him or Lilly at Cafe Boulud or the Breakers, and everyone in the Upper East Side over 60 would know where they were. Plus 5, because bad boy Carter's informant is probably his Grandmother. — omgsammiches

• Rufus really spent an entire episode brooding in his apartment like a scorned housewife, trying to play private investigator with nothing but a land line phone, all four of Lilly's last names and a waffle iron at his disposal? And in that awful sweater...did he learn nothing from Bart Bass, his PIs and swanky leather dossiers? Sigh. Plus 10 for the realism. — vanderlicious

• Dan and Blair share a moment, and then, after an awkward pause, Blair says "your ice is melting". Plus 3 because being Blair's acquaintance is a lot like being on thin ice; its alright for a moment but linger too long and you'll drown. — chloehannah

• Chuck apparently wears topsiders and a hip flask to bed. Plus 10, because, well, clearly. — cellardoor

Faker than Blair and Dan. Just, No.
Minus 1,000,000 for Blair suggesting that being with Chuck is what makes her hate herself. This coming from the girl who has been a bulimic for years, desperately tries to control everyone around her, has to beg for her parent's attention, and is constantly competing with her best friend. I'm sorry Blair, but you've hated yourself for a lot longer than you've been with Chuck. And if you don't love yourself... at least HE does. :-(sorry, I'm just a little bitter about the current storyline... Josh Schwartz is seriously trying to break my black, little heart with all this angst. — nurseluvbass

• Serena to Chuck: "Buy her those Louboutins at Saks to let her know you're sorry." No, Serena. You go to the Louboutin boutique on Madison between 75 and 76. It's like ... a block away from you AND sans smelly tourists pawing over shoes they can't possibly afford. Minus 5. — vandymike04

• Dorota is all "It is most important tradition for happy couple to walk down aisle me and Vanya, or else marriage is jinx forever." And then just because Blair and Chuck can't do it, the tradition is abandoned? I don't think so. What about the happiest couple to ever grace Gossip Girl: Cyrus and Eleanor?! Minus 10. — uesallstar

Minus 15 for Blair causing a scene and interrupting Dorota's wedding. Not even the Queen B in her pre-emasculated glory days would pull such an utterly gauche and heartless move. It's not like Serena's getting married. — rebeccarose2004

• Elliot's not bi. Has his girlfriend ever seen him dance? Jesus. — blairismygracekelly

Minus 5 for Lily getting busted for not being at Canyon Ranch. For one thing, she'd have realized the flaws in the plan and counteracted them (she's practically a professional at lying). Also, I imagine it wouldn't have taken Rufus three episodes (a week and a half?) to see through it. — emmyloser

• Nate is the first person Blair confesses the truth about her break-up with Chuck to? Doubtful! What girl wants to discuss the problems in her new relationship with her ex-boyfriend? Minus 10. — kindalikenateandlittlej

*Minus 10* - Blair asking for drugs to keep herself from vomiting. Please, any quasi-recovering bulemic looooves a good excuse to puke. — legallybored

Minus 5 for chuck's story line. It's like they decided to hire the screenwriter for Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I can understand that the powers that be (PTB) decided to go in a different direction and show Chuck can be vulnerable and has a heart, but that's not why anyone likes Chuck Bass; making him pathetic and naïve makes no sense. It would be like Serena cutting her hair, stopped wearing heals, started wearing dresses below the knee, and never showed cleavage. — zola1439

• I don’t care if it’s a dream sequence, Chuck would never imagine Blair in an outfit she’s already worn. It’s sacrilegious. Minus 3 — enliven

Minus 10 because nate seemed to understand not only the howard hughes reference but blair's way of saying "i whored myself out" without really saying it. archibald isn't that smart. — astorwaldorf

• Its seems odd that Vanessa is MIA this episode. A Polish-Russian wedding honoring the hired help seems more up her alley than any of the other wasp-y events she was forced to attend as Dan's date. Minus 5. — melodyr

• Because I really wanted to see Chuck and Nate’s fight end in a kiss. Minus 5 because it didn’t. — suenue

• There's no way Lily would be secluded in a hotel room with her ex husband for weeks on end and answer the door, in the middle of the night wearing a white granny sweater and school marm bun. Minus 20 because it would be a silk teddy with questionable stains or their dirty sex sheet. — kdow3

Minus only 1 for ridiculous cultural stereotypes at "eastern european wedding",because it was funny. At least for me (I'm belorussian). Trashy pop-song and vodka did not seem fake, thou. — tihii_omut

Minus 6 for Georgina not crashing the wedding. a) Like Blair, she has a weakness for weddings. Or more specifically in Georgie's case, wreaking havoc on wedding days. b) She still needs to get revenge on "Prince Alexei" (Vanya) for whisking her away from the UES. c) In the most recent several episodes, there has been an ongoing theme of role playing. In Gossip Girl world, Georgie practically INVENTED role playing! — blair215

Minus 500 for no new episode next week. I was under the impression, Josh Schwartz, that we were to run uninterrupted until the finale. — merriweather

Security Had to Protect Zac Posen in the Stairwell at His Target Party

“I haven’t shopped at Target for myself, but I would now,” said Selma Blair, who obviously got to skip the several-blocks-long line to get into last night’s Zac Posen for Target party kicking off the 24-hour pop-up shop. (By the time we left, the queue stretched around the corner of Eighth Avenue and halfway down 34th Street.) Ginnifer Goodwin claimed to be more of a Target veteran: “Target’s kind of my go-to for everything, to be honest. Toilet paper, Zac Posen, everything.” She doesn’t have much patience with mobs, though: “I am easily overwhelmed, so if things start gettin’ bananas then I’ll just go online and order it.”

“Bananas” was an apt description for the party itself, where clothes flew off the racks and revelers shot each other dirty looks when they inevitably bumped each other with their huge shopping bags. We spotted Mena Suvari being ushered in by several handlers as she looked longingly toward a rack of bathing suits and protested, “But I want to shop!” The VIP area wasn’t much of a refuge, and Michelle Trachtenberg stormed out past us exclaiming, “I mean, do people not wear deodorant?”

Model-turned-designer Coco Rocha gave Posen a huge hug and chatted about the wedding dress he’s making for her. “I’ve never been a girl that knew her wedding dress — you know how girls plan their wedding dresses? That wasn’t me. So I showed him one thing that I loved, but that was it. I never imagined myself in a dress like that. And he put it beyond — he just went for it. And he collaborated with James [Conran, her fiancé] — James does paintings, and so James is helping a little bit to make the sculpting ideas.” Her dress was actually the last thing she thought about when planning her nuptials, which will take place in France in June. “And he still needs to find a suit,” she said, pointing toward her fiancé.

Zac Posen himself could be seen flying back and forth to the dressing rooms with hangers full of clothes and various guests on his arm, but when he disappeared for about twenty minutes, we finally found him giving an interview in the building’s only quiet spot: the stairwell. His publicist was on the verge of a coronary (“People are leaving and he needs to get back out the party!”), and security was unprepared for the lockdown measures that became necessary when news spread of Posen’s location. When several paparazzi crowded into the emergency-exit doorway and started snapping pictures, Posen’s publicist snapped and lunged at their cameras. “Get out! You can’t be here!” she yelled, swiping at their lenses. Put off by the fierce affront by a slender, designer-clad blonde, the photographers slunk away. Back inside the party, Posen breathlessly exclaimed, “We live in the souk! Listen, this is my quote for the night — we live in the souk. We work, we play, we create, we pay, we get paid. It’s all part of the hustle and bustle that builds our country, and it starts in New York.”

‘Noise Musician’ Lee Ranaldo Wishes There Was More Silence in New York City

Name: Lee Ranaldo
Age: 54
Neighborhood: Tribeca
Occupation: Musician-Artist-Writer. He'll be performing April 28 at Santos Party House for the Film-makers' Coop Benefit Concert, in a lineup including Laurie Anderson, Tony Conrad, and Erik Friedlander.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
Lou Reed (all of the above).

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
Frankie's 457, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, last month. Solid, down-home, and delicious, with very little pretension.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
Read the New York Times, mostly.

Would you live here on a $35,000 salary?
For a family of four, that would be pretty hard, I'd say. Can certainly be done, although not in Manhattan anymore.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
August Osage County.

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Not usually. My kids like to, though.

What's your drink?
Americano Mezze/Misto "Americino" is my own phrase for it — a twelve-ounce Americano with steamed milk plus foam on top.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
We eat at home more than 50 percent of the time.

What's your favorite medication?
Band-Aids.

What's hanging above your sofa?
Sofa is not against wall, only air hangs over.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
A good cheap haircut can be had in New York, still, for 10 or 15 bucks. On the other end, above about about $200 is going overboard, to me, but people do ...

When's bedtime?
One a.m., give or take an hour or two.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
I have great memories of the old Times Square — wouldn't have missed being here to see that place for the world — but I can also deal with the new Times Square in the overall scheme of N.Y. City 2010. I don't spend much time there, other than gawking at the lights. I don't mourn the old, romantic, dirty Times Square, although it was more unique.

What do you think of Donald Trump?
He's part of the development history of a town ripe with developers who've put their stamp on the city over hundreds of years, oftentimes without the vision to have the city's best interests at heart.

His hair creeps me out.

What do you hate most about living in New York?
Sometimes the lack of silence gets me down — odd for a "noise musician" to admit.

Who is your mortal enemy?
As a cyclist, it often seems to be the motorized vehicles that clog our streets.

When's the last time you drove a car?
I rarely drive, but this past week I put 1,050 miles on a rental driving with my family through southern Utah, Arizona, and Nevada — Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Route 66, Las Vegas.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
Perhaps a much-needed reality assessment across the board? Everyone I know feels things are a bit tighter, at best, and that they lost a lot.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
N.Y. Times, hands down.

Where do you go to be alone?
It's easy to be alone in the city — walking, cycling, just about anywhere.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
Loving this city and loving living here.

Mickey Rourke Claims Pet Parrot and Russian Vacation As Business Expenses

"[Y]ou have to do what you need to do to get a handle on your guy. I felt I needed to know where [my character, Whiplash] spent a lot of years, and in this case that was in a Russian prison. So I wanted to see what that was like for myself. I didn’t tell Favreau I was going. I went over there for a few weeks and I went to the prisons in Moscow and I met with a prisoner who had just got out after 12 years … I tried to incorporate the whole Russian philosophy. I spoke to Favreau and I told him, ‘Well, I’d like to be able to speak Russian in the movie, I’d like to be able to use a Russian accent when I had to speak English and I also wanted to have a pet.'" —Iron Man 2 star Mickey Rourke [Inquirer]

"I love working with him. He's my favorite actor to work with, and the only complicated thing is to find the right project." —Angelina Jolie on Brad Pitt [EW via HuffPo]

"[I]t’s in 4D. Not only does it require special glasses, it requires a special helmet. And electrodes and a thing you have to put in your mouth so as to not bite off your tongue. We’ve gone past Avatar. … It’s almost as if you can taste, touch, and smell the Schmucks." —Paul Rudd on his upcoming Dinner for Schmucks [Popwatch/EW]

"It feels so vindicating, the idea that everything the studios hated … is what everyone likes. Every studio said we had to lose Hit Girl if we were going to move forward with this thing, and Hit Girl is by far the most popular thing in this movie. And some of the notes we had were like 'If you are going to keep Hit Girl, make her 25 years old, cause you can’t have a child doing this stuff, no bad language, and don’t have her kill anyone. And if she kills anyone, she must regret it later.' Just stupid notes." —Kick-Ass writer/producer Mark Millar [/Film]

"I remember in the first draft I read, there was, like, one dinner. So, much to my ultimate chagrin, I said to [director Ryan Murphy], ‘There’s just not enough eating! It is called EAT Pray Love.’ Of course, there I am stuffing my face in Rome every other day. I gained seven pounds in Italy." —Julia Roberts [Popwatch/EW]

“It felt really weird kissing someone else as Bella. I was like, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ It was a really strange experience — as it should have been." —Kristen Stewart on kissing Taylor Lautner, a.k.a. werewolf Jacob, in Twilight: Eclipse [Popwatch/EW]

"It was a really tough crowd. I'm still struggling with my throat and I'm sucking these sweets to try and help me through. But yeah they were tough. I heard they were a little pissed off, I understand. I still loved it though, I just love being back on stage. Thank you so much for coming, I hope you enjoyed it." —Whitney Houston on her shaky England concert [Mirror UK]

"My big concern was, 'She's way too good looking!' I was like, 'You need to gain weight, and the goal is to blow people's image of you into tiny little pieces. I'm going to make you look bad at every turn.'" —Meet Monica Velour director Kieth Bearden on the movie's star Kim Cattrall [Daily Express UK]

"[I]t made me laugh a lot to hear her say 'cunt' a lot. It's very funny." —Kick-Ass star Christopher Mintz-Plasse on co-star Chloe Moretz [io9]

Nicolas Cage Buys A Pyramid Tomb, Because He’s Nicolas Cage

National Treasure? More like, His Real Life Treasure!

TMZ has learned Cage recently had a 9-foot tall pyramid-shaped super-tomb built in a New Orleans cemetery — with the expectation that it will be his final resting place.

It’s unclear why Cage chose a pyramid-shaped building — but it’s probably no coincidence that there happens to be a pyramid-shaped symbol on the poster for his classic film, “National Treasure.”

This raises one painfully obvious question: Why WOULDN’T Nicolas Cage buy a pyramid tomb to bury himself in? Name one reason why Nic Cage would not do this. You can’t, can you? Because he’s Nicolas Cage, and this had to happen, and if anything I’m shocked it took him this long after a second treasure-related movie to purchase an advance tomb based on one of the elements in that treasure movie franchise that can be used to bury oneself in.

He’s also altering his will to leave his entire fortune to Snake Eyes.

Good Morning To You Too, Internet

PHILADELPHIA — A New Jersey man is facing charges after police say he intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl and her father in the stands during a Phillies game…

Police say Clemmens made himself vomit on an off-duty police captain and his daughter after a companion was kicked out for unruly behavior.

Ever have that feeling where you wake up suddenly in a panic, wondering if maybe this’ll be the day you go over to the internet and find out it’s no longer there, or it is there but everything’s suddenly not the worst thing ever? I had one of those this morning after I woke up from an awful nightmare where my friends and were hanging out outdoors in the really nice weather, being really active and feeling really good about ourselves. WHEW! Thank God that was short-lived.

Glad to see everything’s still normal, dudes are stil forcing themselves to vomit on off-duty cops and their daughters as revenge for getting in trouble for unruly behavior, and we can proceed with wasting our lives as scheduled.
