Last Night on Late Night: Stephen Colbert Takes on Williamsburg

Stephen Colbert pulled no punches as he ripped into New York's most annoying neighborhood last night for its low census return rate. Colbert said the number of residents who had filled out the census was "less than the number... who have tattoos of mermaids with TVs for heads" and even held a brief interview with a hipster in his audience. That interview was still less strange than Tracy Morgan's on The Daily Show, where the 30 Rock star explained why Tobey Maguire owes him $75. In other non sequitur news, Chris Rock told Jimmy Fallon about the surreal experience of meeting Richard Pryor, a conversation that came from the disclosure that Rock is producing the new Pryor biopic. Rock had to remind himself which Wayans brother is set to play Pryor, but recognition never seems to be a problem for Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse — a blessing and a curse according to the stories of fan requests he told Jimmy Kimmel. Finally, Craig Ferguson managed to cobble together a solid joke from two tired monologue subjects: Jay Leno and taxes. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Lily Collins Cast Opposite Taylor Lautner

The Birth of Tayly: Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Phil Collins' daughter, will star opposite Taylor Lautner in Abduction, the upcoming John Singleton-directed film about a young man who comes across his baby picture on a missing persons website. Prepare to be hated by every girl in the country between the ages of 12 and 15, Lily. [Variety]

Jackson and Lutz Play Games: Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz are in negotiations to star in Deathgames, an indie action film about a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and “forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses.” Jackson will play the ringleader who orchestrates the games “from his computer lair” with the help of “twin ladies who see to his every desire.” Guys, good luck getting your girlfriends to see this one with ya! [Heat Vision/HR]

Uncaged Bird Sings: T.I.’s upcoming album, due August 24, now has a name. The rapper, who was recently released from prison, announced the LP will be called King Uncaged. Not one for subtlety, T.I. [MTV]

Hemsworth Gets Lautner Leftovers: Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) has been offered the starring role Taylor Lautner turned down in David Ellison’s Northern Lights. Lautner was offered $7.5 million to take the part, whereas Hemsworth is probably offering money to the studio for the role. [Deadline]

Real Life Drama: Curtis Hanson and Clark Gregg are in talks to direct and write, respectively, a movie based on the true story of a man who mysteriously arrived in a small Missouri town and cracked down on a group of meth labs… only to be found out as a bank security guard with a phony badge. The 36-year-old was federally indicted on 23 counts for impersonating a law enforcement officer. The original plan was to turn this into a comedy, which presumably was rejected when someone reminded everyone how that worked out for The Informant! [Deadline]

Lee's Flute Revived: Paul Maslansky is developing The Silent Flute, a martial arts feature written by Bruce Lee prior to his death in 1973. Studio Addresses Rumors of Eclipse Trouble

After stirring the excitable Twilight fanbase into something of a frenzy with news that, months after production ended on third film Eclipse, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and other cast members were returning to Vancouver to shoot new footage, the studio announced today that the movie “remains on schedule” and that these new scenes are “not technically reshoots but rather ‘pickup shots’… [that] are normal in the filmmaking process.” And rumors that director David Slate had disappointed the studio were also addressed: "The studio is very happy with Slade and some internally think this film could very well be the best of the three,” the spokesman said. Presumably they just want to add in more shirtless Taylor Lautner shots. [E!]

Oliver North: Obama's 'Core Philosophy' is 'Anti-American'

Lt. Col. Oliver North, just recently back in the country after his 21st visit to Iraq and Afghanistan, stopped by Hannity tonight and offered his take on the current tension between the Obama administration and the Israeli government. Asked by Hannity if Obama’s stance has “emboldened America’s enemies" and “shown our weakness,” North responded quite emphatically.

"This president [has shown a] willingness to be obsequious to our adversaries, to denigrate our allies, and essentially to walk away from the only real democracy in that part of the world. And no one can say he’s big on oil, because he’s not in the oil business, so what is it? It is his core philosophy of being anti-American.”

Shoeshiner Arrested For Burning Down Stand Twice, Returns To Work Next Day

Swain at work today.

As if the story of a 72-year-old shoeshiner arrested on two counts of arson for admittedly setting fire on two separate occasions to a Bryant Park three-seat shoeshine stand wasn’t strange enough - the Times and Post have reported tonight that the man, John Swain, was back at work today, the day after his arrest, shining shoes near Grand Central for $4 apiece. The Fire Department believes that Swain set the destructive fires on March 22 and April 6 out of revenge, as he apparently has harbored a 15-year-old grudge for not being permitted to work at the Bryant Park stand, which has notoriously stolen his business.

“The frustration has been building up for a long time,” Don Ward, Swain's 42-year-old roommate and a fellow shoeshiner, said. “You’ve got to understand something: Out here, the competition is cutthroat, dog-eat-dog. If the other guy is taking your customers, he’s stealing your livelihood, and you can’t let that happen.”

Despite the seeming severity of the charges, Swain was released yesterday with just a desk-appearance ticket and a court date for May 16. When the Post accosted him at his stand this afternoon, he said, "This is none of your business. Step off. I have a right to be here.” So if you've ever been curious about what it's like to literally have your feet held to the fire, you know where to go.

Weinsteins Reportedly To Take Back Control of Miramax

The Hollywood Reporter has issued a report tonight that Bob and Harvey Weinstein have won back operating control of Miramax, the company they founded in 1979 and then sold to Disney in 1993 for $80 million. The studio had been soliciting offers via an internal process for the past few months, and the Weinsteins were rumored to have put together an offer of about $600 million with the help of a few financial backers. The deal has not been officially announced yet, however, and a Disney spokesman told the Reporter no agreement has yet been reached.

Easter To Blame For Unemployment

For the second straight week, the number of Americans filing claims for jobless benefits has increased, a bit of a downer after the whole 162,000 new jobs! excitement earlier this month. However, even though they blamed “volatility around Easter” for the increase in claims last week, the Labor Department again blamed the holiday (as well as Caesar Chavez Day, a California state holiday) for the uptick this week, rather than any, you know, economic reasons. Presumably next week's report will cite "volatility around Earth Day." [Bloomberg via Awl]

Obama Orders Hospital Visitation Rights for Same-Sex Partners

President Obama has granted hospital visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners of medical patients tonight, informing the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a rule that would prevent hospitals from denying these rights.

"There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital,” he wrote in a memo. “Yet every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides."

Gay and lesbian Americans are "uniquely affected" by the current relatives-only policy at hospitals, he went on to write, and "are often barred from the bedsides of the partners with whom they may have spent decades of their lives - unable to be there for the person they love, and unable to act as a legal surrogate if their partner is incapacitated."

The new policy will make clear that any hospital receiving Medicare and Medicaid funding must allow patients to decide who can visit them and will outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and other characteristics.

Thanks to Writing Side-Job, Obama Earns Over $5 Million Last Year

Barack Obama raked in a cool $5.5 million last year, the majority of which comes from sales of his books. He owed $1.8 million in taxes, but overpaid by $8,287 (well, he does save money on phone and internet bills). Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden made $333,182 last year, on which he paid $71,147 in taxes, meaning the Obamas gave about the same amount to charity in 2009 ($329,100) as the Bidens earned overall (this doesn't even count the $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize income the president donated entirely to charity). Here’s hoping Biden gets a cut on the sales of those 'Big F—ing Deal' shirts. [NYDN]

Kick-Ass Creator Ready to Kick Marvel’s Ass

Comic-book author Mark Millar, the outspoken creator of Kick-Ass, is furious with Marvel for allegedly ripping off his idea for a story in which vampires attack mutants. According to Millar's rants on his personal message board, he had planned a story involving vampire mutants and the vampire hunter Blade five years ago for Marvel's Ultimate Comics Avengers series, but the very same idea seems to be the basis of an Uncanny X-Men story arc set to be published two months prior to Millar's own tale. Since details concerning the X-Men story have been limited to teaser images featuring Blade and a vampire version of the teenage X-Man Jubilee, it's difficult to tell how much of Millar's paranoia is justified. The writer has since deleted his posts — though they have been preserved on Robot 6 — and announced that he has spoken to Marvel brass, who have promised to "fix" this situation. [Robot 6]

Patton Oswalt Loses Another Job

Just weeks after losing a part in Broadway's Lips Together, Teeth Apart, Patton Oswalt has lost his lead role in NBC's comedy pilot Beach Lane only three days after he got it. Oswalt had been set to play "James, a slacker given the job of running a small Hamptons newspaper who hires a renowned journalist (Matthew Broderick) to help turn the paper around," but James Hibberd says he was ousted after his first table read on Tuesday. Producers have offered him another, lesser role, but we presume he'll tell them where to stick it. Oswalt was great in Big Fan and everything else we've ever seen him in, so we're not sure what the problem could be. Did he recently get a big tattoo on his face or something?

Are You Ready to Free Your Ankles From the Constraints of Skinny Pants?

Fall 2010 looks from left: Balmain, Derek Lam, and Gareth Pugh.

For too long, putting on pants has been a chore. For years we have squeezed our feet in and out of the tiny opening at the bottom of a skinny leg, and taken them off only to invariably leave the pants turned inside out. What a bother! Maybe that had something to do with the world's busiest people, like Lady Gaga, giving up on pants entirely. But for fall, flared legs are back. They popped up on the fall runways of Derek Lam, Balmain, and Gareth Pugh, to name a few, where ankles breathed once again! Are you ready for a new cut of pant, or do you want to wear leggings and skinnies for life? Thoughts, fears, laments, pleas all welcome in comments.

Barneys Co-op Draws Ire for Its Name

Face-off of the co-ops.

Barneys Co-op and members-only grocer Park Slope Food Coop are in a scuffle over the use of the term "co-op." It seems that after Barneys’ announcement that it would be bringing its spinoff store to Cobble Hill this fall, the market’s general manager, Joe Holtz, turned a bit territorial. He claims that the retailer misuses the word and dilutes his brand image, one that he’s been cultivating for the Coop’s 37 years of existence. “It’s a new thing having a co-op in Brooklyn that’s not a co-op,” he told The Brooklyn Paper. “There is something wrong with that.”

Holtz says he hasn’t decided whether he’ll bring the issue to court on the basis of New York’s “Cooperative Corporations Law.” (The document states that “The term ‘cooperative’ … shall not be used as, or in, a name except by a corporation defined in this chapter,” though a couple of lawyers in the article describe the law as “arcane” and “antiquated.”) Either way, Barneys doesn’t seem too worried. “The year 2010 will be our 25th anniversary since opening the co-op,” a spokeswoman told the Paper. “We’ve been using this phrase for a long time.” Plus, the brand name is trademarked. Were Holtz to pursue his vendetta, such a violation is considered a misdemeanor — meaning Barneys would have to fork over a maximum fine of $500.

Economics 101 With Dr. Kevorkian

At last night's HBO Films premiere of You Don't Know Jack, the new movie about infamous assisted-suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian, we talked to the 81-year-old (who is played in the film by Al Pacino) about what is going on in America today. Despite (or perhaps because of) the eight years he spent in prison, from 1999–2007, for second-degree murder, Kevorkian has some very specific ideas on how to solve our nation's problems:

What’s your opinion of the health-care reforms that President Obama just passed?
I haven’t been following it very closely, but it’s not going to solve the problem. Availability isn’t going to do much.

Why do you think that?
It doesn’t do much to lower costs, as far as I know. There’s a better way to do it, they just won’t do it that way. Everybody should pay for health care, and therefore you should tax everybody a little, and the fairest way is to tax profits. So that if a person has more money one year over the last year, then he pays ten percent of that excess. So that everybody pays equally. And all the corporations and everybody pays that way, and many corporations are going to pay billions, see. And that way, you cover everybody fairly.

Interesting concept.
See, no one’s ever brought that up. You have taxes on excess profits of corporations, but not on human beings.

So you think each individual should pay 10 percent.
If you have less income this year than you had last year, then you pay no extra tax, or equal, but you pay no extra. But if you have more — let’s say you made 20 percent more this year. If you had $100 more, you would pay 10 percent of that, so you would pay $10 tax extra. Nobody would miss that, because it’s out of your profits. 10 percent is nothing. But 10 percent out of a corporate profit tax, making, like, the oil industry and the pharmaceutical industry, you know, doctors’ income, there could be enormous profits, and that way everybody’s covered.

But many individuals don’t have “profits.” They just collect a salary, and if they make more it’s because they got a raise in salary.
They’re still going to enjoy the raise, but a tiny fraction of it goes to the common fund. Nobody can blame anybody for being more heavily taxed that way. And no one’s going to miss that little 10 percent of an excess profit.

You’re from Michigan. What do you think about the current state of the city of Detroit?
It’s a dying city, if it’s not already dead. The bankruptcy of the auto industry hurt it very badly, also. But then, that was due to inept leadership, lack of foresight. And yet, they make billions for lack of foresight. There’s no fairness in the system; the greed has putrefied what feelings of compassion and good we had for society. There are many problems with Detroit; one of them is charity for people who could work, but won’t. And that’s got to stop. And if there are no jobs available, then you can’t blame them. But you’ve entered the era now, unfortunately, of almost insoluble problems, because the population is expanding at a rate where it’s difficult to keep them employed.

Jobs won’t absorb all the people.
No. And you can’t create jobs fast enough, and if you do, it's artificial, like the census. That wasn’t anything to brag about as an increase of employment; that was charity. And we’ve entered the period now — you see this last crisis we went through that scared everybody, there was a solution, but nobody would like it. I could solve it in a minute by cutting the population in half, and now you’d have a job for everybody.

But how could you cut the population in half?
That’s the point; you can’t solve it easily. But it tells you don’t increase your population so fast, because all you’re going to do is compound the problem. You’re cutting out jobs and at the same time adding people for more jobs. These are hard problems to solve, but the solutions are not as easy as they’re trying to make it sound. They’re painful, and people don’t like that.

That’s a constant problem for politicians.
Politicians by definition are lying people. How can you trust a lying person? I know I’m generalizing with broad strokes, but everyone knows something’s wrong with our society. Then you’re frustrated because they can’t put their finger on it, and that leads to anger. People are outright angry. They’re not sad or depressed; they’re angry. Given enough time, the future of humanity on this earth is not very rosy. You’re first going to destroy nature, you’re going to then destroy species, and then you’re going to destroy yourself. We have to protect nature whether we want to or not, because nature will always survive, even if it’s tattered, but a human species tattered will not survive without nature. See? And politicians just overlook that.

OPEN THREAD: Are People Watching Top Chef Masters?

I really enjoy Top Chef Masters. Michelle really does not enjoy Top Chef Masters. We argue about it in our office. Men and women have such different perspectives! Long story short, we’re both getting nine sitcoms next week. But I digress.

To me, Top Chef Masters is the Thursday Night College Football Game to the NFL that is Regular Top Chef (or RegChef, as I call it to people who ask me what I’m talking about). Meaning, Top Chef Masters isn’t as exciting as regular Top Chef, and you’re not gonna be as invested in the people involved or even the outcome, but it’s still better to throw on tv on a random night than most other stuff. The chefs are theoretically more skilled than their RegChef counterparts, so the college/NFL analogy is reversed in that regard, but I enjoy the concept of high-profile chef-owners being forced to go back to the basics (the basics, meaning, the new Lexus Basixx SUV).

There’s obvious drawbacks to Masters — Michelle hates Kelly Choi, and while I don’t entirely disagree, I’m really not that picky about the voice that tells me the amount of time a particular competition will take (athough this week’s episode, where Kelly was the sole Quickfire judge because grilled cheese is so “near and dear to her heart”, distinctly reeked of “no budget remaining”). I also hate that the critics don’t actually criticize the dishes, but always couch their comments with “Clearly you were going for this, cause you’re awesome and know what you’re doing, but it juuuuuust barelllllyyyy missed an eeentsy eeentsy little bit I’M SORRY! I’M SORRY! I know you’re awesome. 750,000 Stars – that puts you in third place.”

So my question to the masses – Are people watching Top Chef Masters? Do people enjoy it or at least enjoy making fun of it, or just flat-out not care? Is it worth a brief weekly Recap? Those Recap Photoshops take our 12-person design team months and cost millions, so I don’t wanna Recap it if no one’s gonna care (although our design team should be a little more free now that Avatar’s done). Leave your Masters thoughts in the comments, if you have any.

Derek Blasberg Has Scratched a Lot of Famous Backs, and They Are Scratching Back

The onslaught of Derek Blasberg press continues in the style section of the Times today, with a lengthy profile of the writer, which finally begins to explain how a boy with a dream can go from his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, to the big city and acquire so many famous friends. He ostensibly should be in the news because he has a new book out called Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady, but that's not necessarily what makes him interesting. Blasberg, an editor for V and Style.com and a freelancer for numerous other publications, can be seen regularly out on the fashion-party circuit chumming it up with his famous pals. The Times's Eric Wilson hit the town one night with Blasberg, fellow fashion scenester Leigh Lezark, and Lezark's partner, Geordon Nicol.

This happened in the car:

“I’m going to Thailand on Thursday,” says Mr. Nicol, his eyes barely visible beneath a Peggy Moffitt haircut.

“But that’s for the operation,” says Mr. Blasberg, teasing him.

“Are you going to St.-Tropez?” Ms. Lezark asks.

“For Louis Vuitton?” Mr. Blasberg replies.

“Chanel,” she says.

“Yes, yes,” Mr. Blasberg says, excited, though his plans are not set. “Are they making you work?”

By work, he means to ask whether Ms. Lezark will be spinning for her supper next month at the runway show for Chanel’s annual resort collection, which is presented in a different port of call each year, or whether she is among the many fabulous people who are being hauled on Chanel’s dime to the French Riviera just to show up for the event. People like him, he means.

Lezark was among the numerous celebrities at Blasberg's book party at Barneys, which was hosted by Chloë Sevigny, Vogue's Lauren Santo Domingo, and Pop editor Dasha Zhukova. Wilson writes that at this party, Blasberg was evidently "greatly admired" by all kinds of fashion people, from Tinsley Mortimer to makeup artist Pat McGrath to photographer Terry Richardson. Not to mention Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Giovanni Battaglia.

But how did Blasberg acquire such a coterie of famous buddies? It's simpler than having a knack for air-kissing — by being nice, that thing that most people who write for the Internet have long forgotten how to do. Years ago, Blasberg was thought to be the writer behind Socialite Rank, which he wasn't, but he's still upset by the association. Wilson writes:

Having been unfairly accused, he said, he won’t write anything bad about anyone, which helps to explain why so many companies are eager to court his favor.

... But then, few writers have penetrated the social world as deeply as Mr. Blasberg without knowing the fear that the party could end with the stroke of a pen.

“It would be easier to write that all the girls were smoking in the bathroom, or to say that everyone was bored or social climbing,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone wins from those kinds of stories.”

Well that's not necessarily true. People who stifle cubicle boredom by reading blogs don't necessarily want to read about sunshine and butterflies and rainbows and how great people born — or married to — money look at fashion parties. Sometimes they want scandal! A silly story about someone wearing the same dress as someone else and being catty about it! Someone who simply wore something hideous and grossly expensive! Sometimes people want to know that the lives of the people who are supposed to be perfect are in fact as imperfect as their own, perhaps more so. That's where those people may "lose" reading Blasberg. But they will not expect or hope for, say, Chanel to fly them to and put them up in St. Tropez for the next fashion show. Or for Chloë Sevigny to host their book party. We don't.

Paul Krugman and Andrew Ross Sorkin Disagree on Even the Tone of Their Conversation

The other day, a fight broke out on the website of the New York Times that in retrospect, was probably a long time coming. In one corner, we had Paul Krugman, the thoughtful, paunchy Nobel Prize–winning economist. In the other, Andrew Ross Sorkin, slick young reporter turned bestselling author. At issue was Sorkin's characterization of Krugman's opinion, in the dark days of 2009. Sorkin wrote in his DealBook column that Krugman said that the country should "nationalize the banking system." Krugman disagreed, loudly, on his blog. He had written, he said, that some banks should be nationalized, not the entire damn system. Sorkin then disagreed with that, as though Krugman didn't know his own mind. Today, public editor Clark Hoyt stepped in to mediate, and found that, unsurprisingly, the two men disagree on basically everything, from who was in the right to what the definition of nationalization is to the tone of their own makeup conversation.

According to Hoyt:

Krugman and Sorkin told me that they talked Thursday. Sorkin said the conversation was “very cordial.” Krugman called it “not much fun.”

On the question of who was right about Krugman's opinions about nationalization, Hoyt sides, obviously, with Krugman. He doesn't say who he believed more with regard to the level of friendliness present in the two men's conversation, but personally, we think we'd take Krugman's word for it on that one, too.

Were the Fall 2010 Runway Castings Really a Turning Point?

Tennant, Hume, and McMenamy walking Calvin Klein.

The AP wonders if "older" models are "the new black" since we saw a handful of older, established, recognizable faces on the fall 2010 runways. Calvin Klein for instance cast Kristen McMenamy, Stella Tennant, and Kirsty Hume. Prada cast Victoria's Secret models Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Giles Deacon also cast Ambrosio. Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa reiterated that he chose older models because he wanted the cast to represent the women who actually buy his clothes, who are not 16-year-olds. His show opened, however, with Jac, who is 16.

Still, Nian Fish, creative director at fashion-show powerhouse producer KCD, says designers, stylists, casting agents and modeling agents all collectively heeded the call to put forth a healthier image.

"This is fashion coupled with compassion," says Fish, who helped the Council of Fashion Designers of America launch its health initiative back in 2007. "But I think the compassion came first, and then the fashion suited these bodies. I loved seeing these bodies in Prada. We're always looking for trends at Prada, and seeing Victoria's Secret girls on the Prada runway woke up a lot of people about what a women should look like."

We loved seeing the Victoria's Secret models on the runways too. It was refreshing. But they also stood out so much because they were still the exception.

"I had been away from fashion shows seven or eight years, other than Victoria's Secret," says Ambrosio ... "It was really nice to participate. It was surprising because, for such a long time, designers were only using girls that weren't so sexy, whose bodies were less curvy."

Sexy, curvaceous figures seem to be on the rise, but the vast majority of girls walking that we saw were still super-skinny and super-young.

Courtney Love Makes A Valid Point

It’s just Crazy Person Valid Point Day here! Crazy like a smart fox! This one comes from Courtney Love, when asked about the possibility of Robert Pattinson being cast as Kurt Cobain in the upcoming biopic of the musician:

“Isn’t that so stupid, who would cast him? That’s just wrong, no offence (to Pattinson)…I watched the ‘Twilight’ stuff very, very recently and I get it, it resonates with the teenaged girl in me, I understand epic love of that nature; I write about it all the time…But isn’t that silly?”

I agree! It would be silly! And she doesn’t even really need to explain why it would be silly, it’s just logically silly somehow. I really hope this is the start of me being on the same page as Courtney Love. Can you imagine being able to totally get everything she says and be like, “Yeah, of course. That makes sense.” That would be so cool. Just taking it to the next level. Courtney Love Logic. CLL. That’s a thing. I just made it a thing.

Goldman Sachs Pleads Alan Cumming to Continue to Take Their Filthy Lucre

After actor Alan Cumming revealed in our 21 Questions that he had taken his money out of Goldman Sachs in protest of their behavior leading up to and during the crisis, he got an interesting e-mail, he writes in the Huffington Post today:

A couple of hours after the NY mag piece went online I received an email from Goldman Sachs saying they had read the piece and reminding me of the amount of cash I had made whilst my money was with them, despite the financial crash. This of course just reminds me of why I moved my money in the first place. It was not so much the fact that I lost a lot of money when the financial crash happened. I did, so did a lot of people. And of course, before then and since, I made money with Goldman Sachs. But the reason I moved my money was that I felt it was the only way I could demonstrate to them that I did not approve of them, that I felt they were out of touch and indeed today they just proved that again.

No word on whether or not the missive came from Lloyd himself. But let it never again be said that this firm doesn't care about its clients!

Spitzer Compares Himself to Icarus

On the very top of the list of things we would never do if we were ousted from statewide office in a giant prostitution scandal (bear with us) would definitely be sitting down and working with a documentary filmmaker to go over the whole thing. That Eliot Spitzer collaborated with investigative producer Alex Gibney for an untitled documentary is completely beyond our comprehension. That he allowed himself to be filmed in dark shadows, growling out quotes with eyeballs that were lit to look like dark pockets of soullessness — well, that's the icing on the cake. And then there's this quote, about how high he was flying in 2006 when his path to the governor's mansion was almost totally assured, and when he started patronizing the Emperor's Club prostitution ring:

"Were things as good as they could get from a political perspective? I suppose that's right. And the only metaphor I can think of is Icarus. Those whom the gods would destroy, they make all powerful."

That — that's like the salt on the icing on the cake that Magnolia uses so that you are in pure bliss for half a block as you walk away from the shop but by the time you reach West 4th, it's actually silently murdered a very deep, important part of you.

Video: Behind the Scenes of D&G’s New Manty Campaign Shoot

This is Dolce & Gabbana's new manty campaign. The label's Gym & Underwear line is dedicated to the World Cup, and the ad stars Italian soccer players Antonio Di Natale, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Claudio Marchisio, Federico Marchetti, and Domenico Criscito. A new behind-the-scenes video of the shoot reveals that capturing moments like these requires a dedicated team of greasers, who spray the men down with cans that resemble fire extinguishers (huzzah!). Also key are the stagehands who show the men how to tilt their heads just so.

Russell Brand Makes A Valid Point

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Russell Brand said:

“The top of the hit parade would look very different if teenyboppers were exposed to heroin. It would weed a lot of them out…I don’t think Justin Bieber could handle [the late Pink Floyd member and addict] Syd Barrett’s habit…A lot of people in their journey to rehab overdose, and then, perhaps, we would be spared their awful music. It’s Darwinian. It’s the law of natural selection.”

I believe this is what is called “taking the piss” in the UK. Sort of. I was not aware that natural selection depended on how one reacted to heroin. I guess I’ll stop working out. Also, there is no doubt that Bieber could not handle Syd Barrett’s habit. No one doubts that. Let’s hope we never find out. It’s all fun and games until you’re Pete Doherty.

Think Americans Would Buy Bruce Willis’s Fragrance?

Just what you've always wanted to happen finally happened! Bruce Willis signed a fragrance deal with the same German company that did Heidi Klum and Leona Lewis's scents. It's unclear what it will smell like, if jet skis will figure into the ad campaign, or if the scent will be sold here, or just abroad. [StyleWatch/People]

(AP Photo/William Morrow)AP - "City of Lost Girls" (William Morrow, 297 pages, $24.99), by Declan Hughes. To those for whom the word Ireland evokes rocky shorelines, misty moors, fairy tale castles and welcoming country pubs, the crime novels of Declan Hughes can be a jolt. His is an Ireland of mean Dublin streets peopled by organized criminal gangs, thuggish police and the occasional homicidal maniac.

Target Sets September Release Date for Tucker by Gaby Basora Collaboration

A look from Tucker by Gaby Basora's collection.

Target confirmed the release dates of its next two designer collaboration lines for its Go series, which spotlights young designers. Designer Gaby Basora of Tucker, which is known for its prints and blouses, will release a line of coats, dresses, and lingerie on September 10. Earlier rumors said the line would launch this summer, but seeing how the retailer pushed it back to the very same day as Anna & Co.'s Fashion's Night Out, perhaps Target plans to hype the occasion with FNO events. Like a New York pop-up shop! Target loves to open those in New York, and it would be nice, since Basora opened and closed a Tucker store in the Lower East side last year.

Target also announced a partnership with Temple St. Clair Carr of the jewelry line Temple St. Clair. Carr uses a lot of gold, diamonds, and gems in her designs, so it will be interesting to see how she tailors her aesthetic for the mass market when her collection hits stores on August 29.

And, don't forget, Zac Posen's Target collection goes on sale tonight in New York (and everywhere else next week) at the 24-hour pop-up. Review the collection here.

Scott Stapp’s “Marlins Will Soar” Is Exactly As Terrible As You’d Expect, To Nine Decimal Places

Songs that have their lyrics re-worded to be about sports certainly don’t require Scott Stapp’s involvement to be terrible, but Scott Stapp’s involvement simply reassures many times over that they will be terrible.

Here’s Scott Stapp’s tribute to the Florida Marlins to the tune of “You Will Soar,” retitled, “You Will Marlins”. Or “Marlins Will Soar”, or something:

Video: Iceland Has A Scottish Enemy

And he’s wearing a Hooters hoodie. I bet those cost a lot. It’s really committing to Hooters to get the hoodie instead of the t-shirt. In conclusion, this man is the BEST.

I love the way he says “I hate Iceland” the second time in a more sheepish manner. It’s so cute! You know, in a not cute sort of way.

I feel bad for Iceland. Totally not their fault that a volcano erupted weeks ago, only now disrupting flights in the UK. I want to hold Iceland and tell it that it’s not it’s fault like Robin Williams did to Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting.

Just like that.

Thanks, Buzzfeed!

SLEEP-DEPRIVED RANTS: Best Cruise Ever Meets So-So-Est Airport Terminal Ever

It’s currently 10:26 AM in sunny Miami, Florida. Yes, 28 years ago in a hospital not far from this very airport in which I digitally pen this missive, my giant 9 lb 11 oz body sprung forth from my Mother, and only a few hours ago, my still giant *sneeze* lb body found itself back in the nest, spending a few days with the Collins Srs. before heading over to Tampa where I am embarking on the Best Cruise Ever, a 4 day concert aboard a Carnival Cruise ship featuring the likes of 3 Doors Down and Lifehouse, among hundreds of thousands of others.

But a funny thing happens when you spend too much time with your parents — in my case, 5 straight days. My brain seems to revert back to its unformed infantile blob state. Perhaps it’s the constant bickering, nagging, nit-picking, and picking-up-after-me-ing. Or maybe it’s the endless Cheesecake Factory salad trough that has been placed in front of my mouth since I landed. Maybe, adorably, there’s some sort of chemical being excreted by my parents’ new kitten Minky, who makes for an adorable if not petite Lutzy replacement.

(Live-blogging Side-note: A gigantic old man who looks like a child molester — no offense sir — just sat next to me and coughed directly onto my hands and laptop. Tuberculosis, nice to meet you.)

I’m still trying to piece together the exact reasons I missed my flight to Tampa this morning. It seemed so simple: Leave the house, get to airport, sit in seat, fly. Go to bed at 2 AM, wake up at 5. But what ended up happening was this: I woke up at 6, scrambled to get everything together, slapped my eyeliner on like Hatsumomo in Memoirs of a Geisha, broke my favorite pair of sandals (my cruising sandals!!) after attempting to jam my giant flesh canoes betwixt its delicate straps in a yet-to-be-scene giant-footed episode of Minute to Win It. Undeterred, I grabbed the suitcase my Mom loaned me for the cruise (a sturdy black box she bought in a flea market in Florence from the illustrious luggage brand known as “Suitcase”… as in, the logo on the outside says “Suitcase” in what I’m pretty sure is Comic Sans), and rolled it with extreme difficulty (damn “Suitcase” wheels) to my fathers awaiting car trunk. Then, my Dad hit the special “T-Birds” button on his Mercury Milan, causing it to spit fire and blades to shoot out the sides of the tires, and we were off to the airport. Making great time! Until the traffic.

The saga continues ahead, along with photographic proof of my parents + Cheesecake Factory obsession.

It is due to these many reasons — my own stupidity, traffic, parental brain-blending, general malaisiness — that I arrived at the terminal too late. Flight closed. Couldn’t check in my luggage (“Excuse me? Do you not see that I have a genuine “Suitcase” brand suitcase on my hands?”), and was, alas, left stranded in Miami until the next flight at noon. If this was an episode of The Amazing Race, this would be the part where they cut away to commercial and play the “They’re f**ked” synthesizer music.)

But things aren’t all bad! Nope, no they ain’t. Look at me! On the internet… at the airport. For the low low cost of $9.95. Other bright sides include: Not having to toss my lip gloss at security, leaving my wallet at the check-in counter, having to leave the terminal to get wallet, again not being forced to throw out my gloss when I had to go through security again, and did I mention that I have Tuberculosis now? Fatastic.

So here I sit, on 3 hours sleep, praying to stay awake long enough to eventually fall overboard on the Best Cruise Ever. (My mother’s sign off on my call earlier, said with grave seriousness: “Michelle, one last thing. And listen very carefully: Do not lean on the railings.” Gonna pre-cog myself on this one and say “Too late, Mom.”)

Oh, and by the way, evvverything is making me laugh right now. Like this comment on ONTD, this video of a corgi playing with an Ipad, the U.S. Constitution… I’m really having a time. (Kill me.) Anyway, I gotta go text my single boo Larry King before my second flight takes off.

Stay tuned this weekend as I update the world live from the Best Cruise Ever via Twitter and this very here blog. I’ll be hosting a lot of fun events on board, including a Male Wet T-Shirt contest and a Cannonball Competition (“So Much Fun You’ll Crack Your Own Head Open!” — Failed Cannonball Contest Slogans). I already miss all of you so much I am crying by Gate 26. (JK it’s Fattie von Blue-Sweater-Vest-Stein’s spittle oozing down my face.) Just pray this flight takes off before the Icelandic ash makes its way over to the Gulf Coast. xoxo

**Cue the assh*le commenters reminding me that this is a pop culture blogggguhguhhhh now. In the immortal words of Bethenny Frankel to Jill Zarin-Fabrics: “Get a hobby.”**
