Industry Roundup: Emile Hirsch to Fight Aliens

Illegal Aliens: Emile Hirsch has signed on to star in the Summit Entertainment thriller The Darkest Hour, which is supposed to be similar to 28 Days Later. Hirsch will play one of a group of American kids, including Oliva Thrilby, stuck in Moscow with a bunch of invading aliens. The only thing worse than that is being stuck in Moscow with your parents. [Variety]

Tech Support: Chris Gethard, a regular at the Upright Citizens Brigade, is replacing Jon Heder in an upcoming Comedy Central series about an unemployed IT specialist who moves back in with his parents. Produced by Will Ferrell, the show's working title is Big Lake. Heder reportedly dropped out because of creative differences. Sounds like they couldn't resolve their Linux vs. Windows debate. [Live Feed/HR]

Ghost Story: Dennis Iliadis has found his next gig—directing Pay the Ghost, a supernatural thriller from Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Adapted from a Tim Lebbon short story, the film will focus on a couple whose son is abducted on Halloween. A year later, they begin sensing his presence in strange ways and start searching for him, only to discovering much more disturbing secrets. Sounds like something you should take a second pair of pants to. You know, just in case. [Variety]

They Have the Power: Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, the pair behind the forthcoming Predators remake, will write Columbia's Masters of the Universe. Finch and Litvak will develop the property from the ground up. Before Columbia picked up the movie rights for He-Man, Warner Bros. owned it and had a script that was described as "Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix meets Batman Begins,” which actually sounds pretty awesome. But that script is gone and we're now left to wonder if the new writers will find a way to squeeze Dolph Lundgren in. Fingers crossed. [Heat Vision/HR]

Dirty Deal: Delroy Lindo has landed a lead role in Fox's drama pilot Ride-Along. The Shawn Ryan-created show centers on a cowboy cop (Jason Clarke) and Chicago's first female police chief (Jennifer Beals), both of whom are hell-bent on cleaning up the city's streets. Lindo will play a politician well-loved by his constituents and suspected of dirty dealings. He'll shadow Governor Paterson for a few days to see how it's done. [HR]

Jay Leno Has the Oldest Audience in Late-Night

NBC has a lot to be happy about now that Jay Leno is back in his 11:35 timeslot. Not only have his average audience increased more than 50 percent over Conan's, but The Tonight Show is back on top of late-night ratings. But something else has gone up since the switch that NBC might not be so psyched about—the median age of a Tonight Show viewer.

The median age of a Tonight Show viewer has jumped more than 10 years to 56 years old. That's the oldest in all of late-night. Not that the other shows have much younger audiences. Letterman's median viewer is 54 while Jimmy Kimmel's and Craig Ferguson's is 52. Over on Comedy Central, Jon Stewart has a median viewer age of 49 and Stephen Colbert's is 37.

Republicans Won't Rule Out Filibuster of Court Nominee

On the Sunday talk show circuit this morning, Republicans said they don't expect a GOP filibuster of President Obama's next nominee to the Supreme Court but they wouldn't rule it out either. Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said as long as the nominee is in the mainstream there won't be any reason to use it.

Arizona Senator John Kyl echoed Sessions on ABC's This Week, saying a filibuster was "unlikely" except under "extraordinary circumstances." And Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, who was also on This Week, said the chances of a filibuster are "tiny" since it's "just about a certainty that [Obama] will nominate someone in the mainstream."

On the surface it might seem like this means there won't be any problems with Obama's nominee. But that probably won't be the case. Just because Sessions and Schumer are both talking about the mainstream doesn't mean they're talking about the same thing. A candidate who Schumer and Obama think is mainstream may be the second coming of Stalin to Republicans. The real question here seems to be whether the GOP wants another fight, which might go a long way toward energizing the base before the midterm elections but would also give Democrats more fuel to add to the "Party of No" fire. Whatever the answer, we're likely to find out soon. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy says the Senate should "wrap this up this summer."

Dillon, Texas Gets a New Hunk

Now that Taylor Kitsch has moved on to movie stardom, there's an opening on Friday Night Lights for a hunky, brooding type. Well, there was an opening. Grey Damon, who has appeared in Greek and 90210, has joined the cast for the show's fifth season. The notice for the role called for a "super, super hot guy" with a "dark, hippie, party-guy vibe" to play a character named Hastings Ruckle. Yeah, he sounds pretty amazing but let's get one thing straight, you can never replace Tim Riggins. [EW]

Williamsburg Thinks the Census Is, Like, Meh

In all of New York City, the neighborhood with the lowest census return rate is a place that NPR calls "the hipster enclave of Williamsburg." To find out why these cool kids aren't returning their census, NPR sent a reporter to an "honest to goodness record shop" in Williamsburg. These are the excuses he heard:

"I didn't see it."

"We still get mail from the past 30 people that have lived there, so it's like who knows if people are getting these."

"Laziness and, like, what's the point."

"I mean people would do it if they got like five bucks."

"What's the point to be counted if you don't count for much anyway?"

NPR goes on to say that it's not just the hipsters in Williamsburg not filling out the census, it's the Jews too. In fact, the Orthodox part of the neighborhood actually has a lower return rate than the tattooed part. Shirking civic responsibly, the first thing that Jews and hipsters can agree on.

Tiger Woods Wins America Back by Playing Golf

All Tiger Woods had to do to get people back on his side was whack a few golf balls. At least that's according to data from Zeta Interactive, a company that measures public perception by trolling message boards, blogs, and social-media sites. Released on Friday, the data shows that Woods's online reputation went from 51 percent positive before the Masters to 69 percent positive after the first day of the tournament. Affiliates Might Keep Conan From Going to Fox

Conan O'Brien and Fox are getting closer to completing a deal to bring the floppy-haired host back to TV but concerns from affiliates may derail the entire thing, the Hollywood Reporter says tonight.

Fox has already gotten concessions from Conan's camp, including an agreement to cut his salary and lower production costs. But Conan is insisting that Fox guarantee that all stations across the country will air his show. This requires consent from the affiliates, who are hesitant because they will lose money if they have to replace episodes of Seinfeld and The Simpsons with a talk show.

There are a few other sticking points in the negotiations, including Conan's desire to own the show rather than work as an employee for Fox and have it start at 11 p.m., 35 minutes before Letterman and Leno. But those issues will likely be settled easily and the only thing standing in the way of the world once again enjoying Conan's stupid little dances will be those evil affiliates.

Michael Steele Admits to ‘Mistakes’

In a speech in front of the Southern Republican Leadership Conference last night, Michael Steele admitted that he's made "mistakes" during his tenure as the head of the Republican National Committee. He also said that he had learned from these mistakes and warned Republicans that Democrats would try to focus on his gaffes, rather than issues.

"They love nothing more than for us to keep pointing fingers at me and others, instead of their radical un-American agenda and we shouldn’t fall for that trap,” Mr. Steele said. “I’m the first here to admit that I’ve made mistakes, and it’s incumbent on me to take responsibility, shoulder that burden, make the necessary changes and move on."

Steele was warmly received in one of his first public appearances since some members of the RNC started calling for his resignation. Still, that warm reception came from a less-than-half-full ballroom. Most of the attendees had already gone home.

James Cameron Finds Pandora on Earth

Before Avatar, James Cameron's efforts to save the world were limited to buying organic and driving a hybrid. But after the movie came out, he started hearing from people around the world who are encountering issues similar to those faced by the Na'vi. This has inspired him to expand his efforts from saving CGI worlds to saving the real world. Cameron recently made a trip to a part of Brazil where the government is planning to build a dam that would devastate indigenous communities who live nearby. Now the HMFIC is trying to stop it.

The dam is a “quintessential example of the type of thing we are showing in ‘Avatar’ — the collision of a technological civilization’s vision for progress at the expense of the natural world and the cultures of the indigenous people that live there,” he said.

Along with satisfying Cameron's desire to help, his trip gave him a chance to come up with ideas for the Avatar sequel. More important, it gave him a chance to paint his face.

Atheists Want to Arrest the Pope

Prominent atheists Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens will attempt to have the Pope arrested during a state visit to Britain in September, the Sunday Times reports today. The duo hopes to have the Pope charged for "crimes against humanity" for his part in covering up sexual abuse in the Catholic church. One obstacle they might encounter though, is the Pope claiming diplomatic immunity. Dawkins and Hitchens think they can get past that because he's not the head of a state recognized by the United Nations.

Dawkins, who may punch the Pope if he gets a chance, said, "This is a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence."

And Hitchens, who one could imagine kicking the Pope in his holy jewels, said: "This man is not above or outside the law. The institutionalised concealment of child rape is a crime under any law and demands not private ceremonies of repentance or church-funded payoffs, but justice and punishment."

Smoking on Planes Isn’t Really That Rare

Smoking on an airplane has been banned for twenty years, and the punishment for breaking this rule is a fine of thousands of dollars. Given that, it takes a special type of jerk to smoke on a plane. And surprisingly, there are a lot of these jerks. In the last five years, the FAA brought 696 cases against people caught smoking on planes, and that just includes those, like Qatari diplomat Mohammed Al-Madadi, who get caught. Most of the FAA fines aren't public, but in 2004 it was revealed that one woman was fined $3,300 for lighting up in the air. Considering that that's about the price of a pack of cigarettes, the fine doesn't seem like much of a deterrent.

Carter, who was nominated for an Emmy in 2007 for her work on Desperate Housewives, was at her best when she was delivering a strong dressing down. This one, from Designing Women, was particularly awesome.

Saturday Night Live Recap: The Triumphant Return of Tina Fey

There were a lot of reasons to think last night's Saturday Night Live would rise above the show's typical uneven fare and be funnier and more consistent than what we're used to. First, Tina Fey hosted and Tina Fey is professionally funny. Second, SNL had been on a four-week break, so writers had time to come up with killer sketches (that's the idea at least). And third, Justin Bieber was the musical guest and he's just funny to look at. So, when the curtain went down and the show was over, did it live up to those not-exactly-lofty expectations? Yeah, it did.

Much of the success of last night's SNL was due to Fey, who was in every sketch with the exception of Fred Armisen's cold open mocking people afraid of the Census. She also brought SNL something it's lacked lately — a strong female presence. This isn't meant to slight the female cast members, but last night's SNL, with its "Brownie Husband," "Women's News," and "School Dance" sketches, seemed particularly like it was made by ladies. Remember, bitch is the new black.

A few of the show's big players didn't get much screen time this week. Kristen Wigg appeared briefly as Aunt Linda, a "Weekend Update" character that we once enjoyed but are now inclined to give two "Oh, brothers" and a "Sheesh." Bill Hader was equally absent, showing up in a sketch meant to make fun of Tiger Woods that really just made fun of golf and in the final sketch of the night. Meanwhile, Kenan Thompson debuted a badass Al Roker who parties with tabloid strumpets in between Today show segments. On to the best and worst sketches of the night.

Best
Tina Fey channeled her inner Liz Lemon for the night's most successful sketch, "Brownie Husband." Not only does it speak to a real-life fantasy (brownie companionship), but it is fantastically gross. This sketch also showed, right off the bat, that Fey was willing to go completely over the top for laughs, always a good thing for an SNL host. Also, we hope Duncan Hines was watching because we could really go for some “rich fudge and emotional intimacy.”

Fey's reprisal of her Sarah Palin impression was a close second to "Brownie Husband" in the race for best sketch of the night. The impression, as always, was spot-on, as were the examples of shows that would play on the Sarah Palin Network. By the way, network executives, we'd totally watch Todd!

Worst
It's been about twelve hours now since "Lolene" ran and we've got no idea what was going on. The idea of a nine-inch hooker is much more sad than funny and the dialogue made it even more of a bummer. Beyond that, the special effects removed the audience from the equation and created an awkward pacing, something you'd like to avoid at the end of the night.

Vulture Exclusive: Starz Developing a Spartacus: Blood and Sand Prequel

Vulture has learned that Starz is developing a six-episode miniseries prequel to its freshman hit, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, in order to keep the series' momentum after its star, Andy Whitfield, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma a month ago and production on a second season was indefinitely postponed. The series (the finale of which airs next week) has been Starz's first original-series hit, averaging a million viewers each week; the network green-lighted season 2 a month before it even premiered, but now, with Whitfield in treatment, Starz finds itself with empty sets, actors, producers, and writers very expensively standing by. A prequel (Gladiator Babies, perhaps?) would keep the sets and creative staff productive, while holding on to the original show's fans. Network execs are now in Cannes at the annual MIP TV international programming marketplace, looking at other options, but this spin-off is looking like a tempting bet to fill their January hole. More as this story develops.
