Last Night on Late Night: Jon Stewart Mocks David Remnick's Caption Contest

New Yorker editor David Remnick stopped by The Daily Show last night to promote his pumped-up Obama biography and at the end of the interview Jon Stewart turned his attention to the magazine's back page. You can probably fill in Stewart's punchline yourself, but Remnick seemed to enjoy the joke. Tina Fey spoke about her own comedic standards on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, telling of how she dismissed some sketches as "lies" in the planning phase of her return to SNL. Fellow writer Jennifer Love Hewitt visited Craig Ferguson but her appearance wasn't nearly as entertaining as the segments that bookended it: Michael Clarke Duncan reading from her memoir, The Day I Shot Cupid. Finally, Jay Leno teased Barney Frank about his clothing. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Diane Lane Joins An American Family

Modern Family: Diane Lane has signed on to star in HBO's Cinema Verite, a dramatized look behind the 1973 documentary An American Family. Originally airing on PBS, the documentary, which was like the Jon and Kate of the 70s, showed a family frankly dealing with divorce and sexuality. Lane will play Pat Loud, the family's matriarch, who asks her husband for a divorce on camera. Sounds super uncomfortable! [Live Feed/HR]

Big Momma's Big House: Faizon Love, Emily Rios, Portia Doubleday and Michelle Ang have all joined the cast of the third installment of Big Momma's House. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son will center on Big Momma and his son (Brandon T. Jackson) going undercover in an all-girls school. Love is set to play a security guard with a crush on Big Momma, while the other three will play students. Martin Lawrence, for his part, will make this face. [HR]

Dig Her Out: Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker has confirmed that she will release a solo album on Kill Rock Stars in October. Tucker is currently holed up in Portland recording the album, which she calls "more of a middle-aged mom record." We find this a little hard to believe, since middle-aged moms don't usually rock this hard. [Pitchfork]

Oh My Tosh: Even before the premiere of the second season of Tosh.0, the show has been picked up for a third season. Comedy Central announced yesterday that there will be at least 29 more episodes of Daniel Tosh telling jokes in front of a green screen, in addition to the 25-show second season. We just hope he doesn't run out of people for web redemptions. [HR]

Ex-Files: Hilary Winston, a co-executive producer of Community, has sold the film rights to her upcoming book My Ex-Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me. The book and the movie are about Winston's discovery that he ex-boyfriend wrote a novel in which she was represented by the "fat-assed girlfriend" character. Her book, which is non-fiction, will not be nearly as kind. [HR]

John Hodgman Teaches Keith Olbermann About Twitter

Up until last night, Keith Olbermann was a Twitter-hater (he even named the website the "Worst Person in the World" one time). But then, with two minutes left in his show, Olbermann overcame his disdain for the site and sent his first Tweet out to the world. True to form, it was overwritten and overwrought:

I give up. I was wrong. Young and foolish. Now my twitter-cot belongs to the ages. Behold: I tweet.

But just because Olbermann joined Twitter doesn't mean he understands it. To help him with that, he brought in professional funnyman John Hodgman, who was, as always, funny. For those of you who Tweet, watch this video and laugh. For you Luddites out there, take notes.

Networks Steal Another Party Down Cast Member

Not long ago, we lamented the exodus of actors away from the fantastic Starz comedy Party Down and toward network TV. Tonight there's news of yet another. Lizzy Caplan, who plays a struggling comedian on the show, has been cast in the CBS pilot True Love. To make matters worse, the limited description of the show provided by The Hollywood Reporter makes it sound atrocious: "Love is an ensemble comedy about four New York friends — Henry (Jason Biggs), Kate (Minka Kelly), Larry (Tyler Labine) and Connie (Caplan) — looking for love." Marty Markowitz Wants an 'Apple Store to Grow in Brooklyn'

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz loves him some Brooklyn, but he doesn't love the borough's lack of an Apple Store. Who wants to go all the way to Manhattan just to spend $1,500 on an iMac? Not Marty Markowitz. So in order to rectify this problem, Markowitz has made this video, which he hopes will convince Steve Jobs to bring an Apple store to Brooklyn.

Markowitz's pitch is two-fold. There's the part where he says Brooklyn is the creative and cultural hub of the world with "Mac-lovers everywhere—from Williamsburg’s indie musicians and the poets of Fort Greene to the artists and tech startups of DUMBO and the more than 30,000 visitors who attend our internationally renowned Brooklyn Book Festival." Then there's his better argument: "My God, even Staten Island has an Apple Store!"

Release of Jim Carrey's Gay Prison Comedy Delayed Indefinitely

I Love You, Phillip Morris, the Jim Carrey-Ewan McGregor gay prison comedy that's been floating around for what seems like forever, will float around some more as the company set to roll out the film has postponed its release indefinitely. Consolidated Pictures Group had first planned to release the film on March 26. That date was bumped back to April 30. And now April 30 has been bumped back to some undetermined date in the future. Perhaps it's too much to ask, but maybe this is what Jim Carrey needs to finally realize that he should be making funny faces or doing nothing at all.

Vulture Exclusive: Brad Bird in Negotiations to Direct Mission: Impossible IV

Insiders tell Vulture that Pixar mainstay Brad Bird (Ratatouille, The Incredibles) has overtaken the competition to direct Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible IV, and is now in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to do the film. A source close to the deal says that the talks hinge on Bird's mammoth quote: animation projects can take three years of work, and therefore the directors get paid much more, and considering Bird's last two films both won Oscars, his normal paycheck is even bigger yet. However, shooting and posting even a big-budget, CGI live-action film takes only a year or so. (In fact, this one can't take any longer; the studio has it slated to open May 27, 2011. ) Therefore, Paramount is hoping Bird will reduce his price accordingly.

Speaking of big-shot directors, executive producer J.J. Abrams, who directed M:I3, helped craft the M:I4 story. The screenplay was ultimately written by Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum (ABC's Life on Mars, Happy Town). We hear it involves spies.

Al Gore Is Not a Fan of Obama's Offshore Drilling Plan

Back in June of 2008, when Al Gore finally announced his endorsement of Barack Obama, the future president said, “When I am president I will be counting on Al Gore to help me lead the fight for a clean energy future here in the United States and around the world.” Now, nearly two years later, Obama has lost Gore's support thanks to his decision to expand offshore oil drilling.

In a Tweet sent out to his 2.1 million followers yesterday, Gore pointed to a post written on the website of his Alliance for Climate Protection that criticizes Obama's decision. In the post, the Alliance's CEO Maggie Fox wrote:

"We cannot simply drill our way to energy security. Americans are demanding a clean energy future that goes beyond drilling and incentives the technologies that are critical to building a 21st-century clean energy economy. What we need now is presidential leadership that drives comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation that caps harmful carbon pollution, puts America back to work, ends our reliance on foreign oil and keeps us safe."

In his Tweet, Gore called the post "great." When asked to clarify the former-VP's stance on the issue, his spokesperson said, "Former Vice President Gore did not release a statement, but the philanthropy he chairs did." That seems to confirm that Gore agrees with Fox, making this the first time he has publicly split with Obama on anything.

50 Cent: Robert Pattinson Could Totally Join G-Unit

In a recent interview with MTV, 50 Cent said that he's on the hunt for new people to join G-Unit. You see, his old lackeys Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo are too busy to go on tour with him and as we all know, rappers don't travel solo. So 50 is keeping his eye out for "talent that inspires" him and someone that "complements what [he does] with their own thing." Naturally, that led him to Robert Pattinson. "He has a big enough following to be the frontline," 50 said. " Twilight ain't no joke." We're not exactly sure what Pattinson would do in G-Unit, but he seems like he'd be a killer hype man.

The Other Brothers Who May Stop the Weinsteins From Getting Miramax Back

Miramax Films' new owners will almost certainly be brothers — but it’s looking a tad less likely that their names will be Harvey and Bob. While the Weinsteins have made the higher bid to buy back their old studio from Disney ($600 million), it’s the $550 million cash offer from the three fully loaded Gores brothers — billionaires Alec (who owns Westwood One, America's largest radio network) and Tom (who rebuilds distressed companies and then flips them for profit) along with their merely multi-millionaire brother Sam (who owns Hollywood’s Paradigm agency) — that might be the most attractive. And insiders familiar with the bid say that the Gores are going in with a far bigger goal: They’re simultaneously bidding on the distribution company Overture Films, as well as the home-entertainment distributor Anchor Bay Entertainment, both owned by Liberty/Starz Media. If they land all three, they’ll find themselves with a fully self-sustainable entertainment enterprise.

Sam Gores, who’s representing his billionaire bros, declined to comment, but analysts put the combined value of Anchor Bay and Overture — the latter of which was founded in 2007 and has a library of fourteen films that include Brooklyn’s Finest and Law Abiding Citizen (and, almost poetically, Last Chance Harvey) — at $225 million. And the Goreses’ bid underscores just how serious the three siblings are about jumping into the media business with both (or is it all six?) feet: Miramax is an enduring brand with a huge library, and it could serve as platform for a fully integrated media conglomerate that could do much more than make and distribute movies. Insiders familiar with the Goreses’ grand plan tell Vulture that the three brothers plan to vacuum up similar film libraries and create a Miramax Channel on cable, much like the beginnings of HBO.

But far-reaching plans aside, sources tell us that what makes their offer more enticing than the Weinsteins’ higher bid is that it’s all cash. Tom Gores, with a net worth of $2.2 billion, and Alec Gores, with a net worth of $1.6 billion, are 147th and 220th on Forbes' list of richest Americans. That the Brothers Gores are liquid enough to simultaneously negotiate to buy a distribution company, home-entertainment venture, and a film studio is no doubt reassuring to Disney, who'd hate to see a deal unravel at the eleventh hour. Vulture hears that the Weinsteins have three partners: Supermarket magnate Ron Burkle is bankrolling half of the $600 million bid, and they’ve also recruited two capital funds, Fortress Investment Group and Colbeck Capital Management. Dealing with a group of investors only increases the odds that someone will pull out, so a surefire buyer like the Gores has to look enticing, especially when it’s a family that’s clearly planning to buy their way into Hollywood one way or another. Remember, MGM is for sale, too.

Future 'Harry Potter' ideas

J.K. Rowling celebrated Easter at the White House, reading to some kids and answering questions about the future of "Harry Potter". According to the The Washington Post, Rowling said she doesn't have explicit plans to write another "Harry Potter" tome, but she certainly hasn't ruled out the idea. "Maybe 10 years from now," she said. Eee! Even this possibility, no matter how slim, got us excited about the prospect of another book about the gang from Hogwarts. To help Rowling get started writing, we came up with some ideas for her next novel.

Palin, Gingrich Butt Heads on Being the Party of ‘No’

At her freedom rally with Minnesota Census fearmonger Michele Bachmann last night, Sarah Palin, using classic Palin syntax, said that she was fine with the GOP being labeled "the party of no."

"You know, here the Republicans have been getting criticized lately with this, this mistaken concept, I guess, sort of surrounding Republicans right now that they’re the Party of No. That we’re the Party of No. And we’re saying, ‘What’s wrong with being the Party of No when you consider what it is that Obama, Pelosi and Reid are trying to do to our country? So be it!'"

We're confused — is it fair to call the GOP the party of no, or not? In either case, former House speaker Newt Gingrich, without mentioning Palin by name, took an opposing stance in a statement released this afternoon:

"It's not enough to say no to the radical agenda of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. Tonight's speech will explain why real leadership requires Republicans to offer a compelling vision of safety, prosperity, and freedom that stands in vivid contrast to Obama's secular, socialist, machine now running Washington."

Both Gingrich and Palin will be among the high-profile speakers making appearances at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, traditionally a showcase of prospective Republican presidential candidates, which began today. Gingrich is giving his speech — "Becoming the Party of Yes" — tonight, with Palin set to take the stage tomorrow afternoon. Both are open to running in 2012, and it'll be interesting to see if Gingrich is setting himself up to be the "serious ideas" guy in contrast to the simple opposition of, say, Palin. No doubt Palin has ideas of her own as well, but there are only so many things you can fit on a hand.

Rapper Sam Adams Not As Good As Sam Adams the Beer, Sam Adams the Revolutionist

A few weeks ago the obscure Boston rapper Sam Adams — a 22-year-old Asher Roth knockoff who is the captain of the soccer team at Trinity — got some national press when his debut EP hit No. 1 on iTunes' hip-hop digital-album charts and accusations surfaced that he had doctored the numbers by purchasing the bulk of the sales himself. Billboard debunked the charges, but it was too late: The publicity from the nontroversy — the EP sold a completely ignorable 8,000 copies and topped some random chart nobody ever brings up, for goodness sake — was just barely enough to nudge Sam Adams into the sphere of our general awareness. Now, we fear, he may be coming to yours. Why all the severity? Because the video for his single “Drive Me Crazy” was just released, and, well … Look, we truly believe we’re open-minded enough to give even rap music made by the captain of the soccer team at Trinity a fair shake, so know it is without any inherent bias that we declare this absolutely putrid.

Jesse James Is Undoing the Hard Work of the World’s Best Couturiers

When stories of Jesse James's affair broke, James could be seen wandering in and out of his motorcycle shop every day wearing a pair of soiled overalls. And they weren't designer Ralph Lauren ones or couture Jean Paul Gaultier croc ones, they were from his own line of workwear that you can find at Wal-Mart, of all places. Writer Sean Macaulay pontificates at length about the implications of James's breakup overalls in the Daily Beast:

Jessegate is just the latest, and I would argue inevitable, setback in the centuries-long quest to gentrify overalls.

Did You See Our Cameo on High Society Last Night?

On last night's High Society, Daily Intel's Mike Vilensky was caught on camera listening to character/person Devorah Rose lay out the exposition for her pretend war with Tinsley Mortimer. Vilensky wrote about the event when it happened in the real world, and we were not surprised to see that that version of events had absolutely no bearing on how the conversation was depicted on the show. Intel Chris IM'ed with Mike about his big cameo on the show that will eventually end us all:

CR: So, Mike. You were on TV last night. Looking good!
MV: I was! THX! I was kind of like, "Wow, that's what I look like while I'm doing these things?"
CR: I always find it so strange to see one's self from the side, or an angle you don't normally see. I remember once Hermione was time-traveling on Harry Potter and she saw herself. Her reaction was, "That's what my hair looks like from behind??"
MV: That's just what this was like! Time travel. Back to last December, when Devorah Rose tricked me into appearing on her reality show.

CR: But the problem was, the way they edited it was nothing like the way it happened. Particularly with regards to what you wrote afterward.
MV: Right, which is probably why they didn't even show or read the whole item.
CR: Why don't you remind us of exactly what went down.
MV: Well I showed up at The Four Seasons restaurant for this benefit in hopes of some free tartare and I was like, "OMG, Devorah Rose. Friend of Bethenny, lover of underage P.C. Might as well talk to her." Immediately she was all "Would you mind talking to me on camera?" and I was actually like, "Um I kind of would ... this wasn't my reality show outfit ... but okay, whatever, fine." And the light was ON.
MV: I ran through a few questions like "Are we on a reality show right now? If so, which one?" And she kind of ignored those and made this face like, "Wow, what a total NOOB this kid is, mentioning a reality show while he's on one! Jesus ... " But then she basically segued into how she hates Tinsley Mortimer, like, pretty much out of nowhere.
CR: You never mentioned Tinsley's name?
MV: Never! And generally you have to kind of bargain with celebrities before they start bad-mouthing other celebrities.
CR: Well, to be fair, on the show it did seem like she was insanely going after Tinsley for no reason, out of the blue. But they characterized our item as though you had bought into her act. When in fact the item was specifically about how transparent and fake it was.
MV: Totally. And also, right, I did that whole kind of standing awkwardly and smiling and nodding agreeably thing ... I wasn't going to stop the woman
CR: Yeah, you have to do that monkey act for people sometimes. It's so degrading. Once I did that whole shtick with Lauren Bacall when I had no idea what she was talking about, and she picked up on it and bitched me out in front of all these people.
MV: It's generally my reporter M.O. though. Maybe my M.O. in most of life, come to think of it. In any case, Devorah didn't really care if I was listening; I think she just wanted to make sure we printed something mean she said about Tinsley at any cost.
MV: And later, I interviewed Tinsley, who was like "We were never friends. She used her time on camera to try and further her own fame." (I'm paraphrasing ... ) Which is what our item conveyed. The whole thing seemed contrived and ridiculous.
CR: You know Devorah has been texting me about this.
MV: Ha! I'm jealous that she texts you! (Can she get us P.C.'s number?)
CR: She's warned that we'd be on the show, and then gave the whole, "At the end of the day, it's just entertainment ... simply a TV show" line. Also I got a press release about Devorah last night, from a publicist.
MV: Woman is truly committed to this quest for fame.
CR: From the release:

"Devorah is living proof that women have brains behind the beauty and can be both sexy and intelligent since she is a mainstay on the social and editorial scene in her everyday role as Editor-In-Chief of the highly acclaimed Social Life Magazine. The new reality show, while highlighting the spurious social scene of high life Manhattan, is cleverly laced with humor and irony, and Devorah believes it will expose a lot of socialite myths by taking viewers behind the velvet ropes to witness the drama up close so they can make their own judgments."

MV: Wow! Brains AND beauty!
CR:

It seems that no matter what you read lately - newspapers, magazines, blogs - everyone wants to know what Devorah Rose is doing! Dubbed by the NY Post as the real-life ‘Blair Waldorf,’ this beautiful, multi-talented, dazzling young woman is a household word around New York’s elite social circuit as well as for her cameo appearances on ‘NYC Prep’ and ‘Real Housewives of New York City.’ Not just for New York anymore, Devorah is branching out on the national circuit as a co-star in the new CW Reality Show ‘High Society.’

MV: She is truly amazing.
CR: I feel like she's Bethenny Frankel without the quips.
MV: Or the pregnancy
CR: Just wait …
MV: I am almost flattered to have been a pawn in Devorah's games ... she's really something.
CR: I don't necessarily relate to her goals. But she's a New Yorker, that's for sure. She'll stop at nothing.
MV: Her acting chops could use some work. This may be a losing battle for her. But she is not heading toward obscurity without a good fight!
We salute her?
CR: I suppose we do.

Here Is a Portrait of Alan Greenspan in Chaps

It's not a photograph, unfortunately (or, we guess, fortunately), but a painting, conceived of and commissioned by London-based hedge-funder Scott Walters and brought to exquisite life by portraitist Nathan James. Walters explained the heavy symbolism within to Business Insider thusly:

"He is meant to look like a confused old man, unsure of where he is going, riding the bull market (the bull) all wrong," he says. "He is looking over his shoulder, not into the past but into the future..ie. he is clueless of how it should be done." The flying pigs represent hedge funds, "capitalist pigs," that are meant to "remind you of the inherent greed in our business...They are flying because they were able to navigate the markets in tumultuous times, unabated, and stuffed with cash regardless of the insanity Greenspan helped create." The bear, sitting openly and rather plumply in the grass nearby, "signifies that he can't see it coming."

And the chaps?

"I used to work horses on a family cattle ranch in Utah, trust me, you need heavy chaps ... so I threw them on him for realism and a nod to my childhood."

Realism.

Demi Moore Half-Confesses to Plastic Surgery

Demi Moore, 47, tells the new issue of British Elle she used to be so obsessed with her figure that she'd bike 35 miles before breakfast. But the actress, who previously denied much-discussed apparent Photoshopping to her W cover, now eats pasta and even popcorn and sticks to yoga and Pilates.

Moore tells UK ELLE's May issue, "The irony is that when I abandoned that desire to dominate my body, it actually became the body that I'd always wanted."

It's also possible that she embraced the desire to just stop trying and pay for it already. "I have had something done, but it's not on my face," she said, before sort of taking it back. "You know what? Maybe one day I'll go under the knife." Oh, Demi. People don't become rich and famous so they can hold back from that sort of thing.

Tariq Ramadan: I Would Not Teach in the U.S. Now

Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan is tired of talking about being barred from the United States. In 2004, he was all packed up and ready to move from his home in Switzerland to begin a tenured teaching position at University of Notre Dame when his visa was revoked by the U.S. government under George W. Bush. The stated cause was a donation he made to a Hamas-linked charity, but at the time he made the donation, the U.S. had not officially linked the group to terror. This January, Hillary Clinton issued an order that enabled him to get a visa and return. He's back in the country for the first time since then, and in New York for one day of his whistle-stop tour. Elegant and refined in a blue pinstriped suit, the professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford talked to Intel over lunch today in a Soho bistro, in the middle of a day of wall-to-wall interviews.

What do you hope to do while you're here?
I'd like to carry on the work I've been doing, to create a collaboration between western countries and Muslim majority countries. Honestly, I'd like to get beyond this story of being banned from the U.S.

Were you ever given a proper explanation for why your U.S. visa was revoked?
No, never. They were trying to find something to keep me out. First they said it was the Patriot Act, that I had links to terrorism. Then it was that I gave money to a group that supported terrorists. But I gave the money before that group was blacklisted. I should have known? They said it was retroactive. It was silly. I condemn violence and terrorism. I never got from them the true reason.

Your grandfather Hassan al-Banna founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Do you recognize the Muslim Brotherhood of today — which some would characterize as separatist and violent — as the organization he started?
As with any group, there are trends and there is historical context. My grandfather started the group as a reaction against colonization in Egypt. The group split in 1949 and became something completely different. I disagree with what it has become.

In recent years do you feel the chasm between the Muslim world and the West growing wider? Or coming together?
Well, I disagree with the characterization of a "Muslim world." I refer to certain countries as Muslim majority countries. There is a great deal of misunderstanding and misperception between them and the West — on both sides. There is a great deal of mistrust on both sides. Obama's election brought hope — he is intelligent, perceptive — his speech in Cairo showed that he knew how to communicate with Muslims. But there's been very little change on the Israeli-Palestine conflict. The settlements carry on. Obama has the vision and the words, but does he have the power? This is problematic. It seems he is limited.

What do you find to be the most alarming misconception about Islam?
That it is a violent and expansionist religion, a colonizing force. This puts people on the defensive. It keeps people from listening, in a peaceful way, to what Muslims have to say. And Muslims need to take more responsibility for this misunderstanding — many of them are doing things in the name of Islam that we have to condemn.

How can we, as you say, create a collaboration?
We need to have intellectual empathy for one another. Communicate in a way that people can understand; this is the true bridge. Also we need to increase democratization, but stick to our values. For instance, don't talk about supporting human rights but forget them when we're dealing with petrol monarchies with money.

How can New Yorkers act on this?
These misunderstandings will be solved in the streets, in daily life. Far from national controversies, it is our daily life that determines how we feel about people or groups. Open up doors to diversity of cultures, and not just by eating their food or dressing like them. If you want something to change, take action and educate yourself. Be a creative citizen, not a victim. This is how we are effective, and how we will change the world. Look deeply to understand each other. Give meaning to your life and don't just sink into a consumerist way of life.

Would you ever come back to the U.S. to teach?
No. Maybe as a visiting professor. I'm very happy at Oxford.

Tariq Ramadan will be on a panel at the Cooper Union tonight to discuss "Secularism, Islam and Democracy: Muslims in Europe and the West."

Nation Does Not Think Biden’s Outburst Was a Big F—ing Deal

When Joe Biden dropped the F-bomb a few weeks ago, it was more hilarious than insulting. This is, after all, Joe Biden we're talking about. When he does things like that, you can't help but shake your head, chuckle, and say something like, "Aw, Joe!" And then maybe buy a commemorative T-shirt. So confirms a Fox News poll showing 57 percent of registered voters did not find the incident offensive, compared to 37 percent — including this nerd — who did. The latter number kind of makes sense, actually: It's pretty close to the 35 percent who, in a 2006 AP-Ipsos poll, claimed they never, ever use "fuck" or its many versatile derivatives in conversation. Everyone else seems to figure that if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for Biden. Doesn't mean they'd necessarily use it on live television at a signing ceremony with the president, of course.

Condé Nast Stole Elle’s Publisher for Food Titles

Tom Florio.

Carol Smith headed publishing at Elle as the senior vice-president and chief brand officer of Elle Group for the past eight years. However, Condé Nast just stole her away from Hachette Filipacchi Media for a newly created position that reports to Tom Florio. Last year Florio was promoted from publisher of just the magazines that fall under Vogue's purvey (Vogue, Teen Vogue, and Men's Vogue) to also overseeing Condé Nast Traveler and Bon Appétit. Under Florio, Smith will serve as vice-president and publishing director of Bon Appétit and the Gourmet brand.

Some wonder if Florio hired Smith simply to squash his competition. As Vogue's greatest competitor, Elle reeled in 2,082 ad pages last year compared to Vogue's 1,988 pages (though this doesn't necessarily mean Elle made more money on those pages). Insiders tell WWD that Florio was overheard saying of Smith's appointment, "The best offense is a good defense."

During Smith's tenure at Elle, where her name appeared above Robbie Myers's on the masthead, the magazine sponsored Bravo's Project Runway, and later aligned itself with MTV's The City, making it the No. 1 fashion magazine as far as extracurricular reality-television projects go. (Isn't it funny how no one mentions Stylista in connection to Elle anymore? It's like a bad dream the industry mostly seems to have forgotten.)

Florio wants Smith to help him "build a significant food group" and tap into the category's television potential. He told WWD, "Carol is a brilliant media executive and I think when she looked at the growth potential of this food category at a time when it’s hard to find growth anywhere, she got turned on — she liked it." Smith explained her decision to jump ships a little differently:

“My contract was coming up for renewal and I never saw myself going anywhere. I love Elle and thought I’d retire here, but then I had a drink with Tom. He said, ‘Could you ever see yourself doing for food what you did for fashion with Elle?’” Smith recalled. “I had never even thought about it….Then I started to think, you know, what’s the difference between food and fashion? Not much.”

She's right — just look at Bravo. They've built an entire network on shows that are all essentially the same, but also completely different, and most of them revolve around food, fashion, and people who like food and fashion. Elle creative director Joe Zee is sad to lose his colleague. "I was told 2010 is the year of change. Change at ELLE today and I am heartbroken about it," he tweeted about the news.

As someone who always looked younger than his years, it was the moustache, maligned as it may be depending on fashion trends, that got him some respect, he says. ANTM Recap: André Leon Talley Has a Cane and He Knows How to Use It

Last night on America's Next Top Model, André Leon Talley brought a cane to the judging. Why? So he could brandish it at bad models, that's why! Not only did André brandish his fabulous new accessory at the bad model contestants, he also directed its wrath at Tyra Banks, who didn't know the French words for "doll" and "bad doll" (or "dreck doll," as Talley prefers to say these days). The challenge involved the girls looking fake and posing on Canal Street, making for such a clever tie-in to the counterfeit-goods industry. Too bad The City already did a Canal Street episode. See Talley's cane in action in this week's montage of his best moments from last night's show.

Price is Right Lesson #1: Never Take the Money

Having been an avid fan of The Price is Right for many, many, many years (every year I’ve been breathing), there are a few rules of thumb I’ve picked up along the way. Always put your Plinko chips in the middle. Bid conservatively. And when they offer you a small sum of money instead of a car, never, ever agree to it.

This rule has never been better exemplified than on this morning’s episode. Meet Corey. Corey is super handsome. Corey has always been a really lucky guy. But Corey decided not to test fate when playing The Bee Game for the chance at winning a PT Cruiser (the preferred vehicle of out of work London taxi drivers everywhere). So instead of seeing if he’d be driving away in novelty car bliss, he did the “right” thing and took the cash.

And then… this happened:

So there you have it, readers. Don’t be a p*ssy. Always, always go for the car.

In other news, my crush on Corey was still pretty real — after all, now the guy was $1,800 richer after taxes — that is until Drew asked him who he wanted to say hello to by the Big Wheel:

Someone, please CafePress me a t-shirt that says “I Wanna Say Hi To My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and Kenny.” Kenny, if you’re out there, Skype us ASAP.

See the Look Book for Lindsay Lohan’s Expanded 6126 Line

Lindsay Lohan's line of leggings will expand this fall to include actual clothing, such as dresses and jackets, and alleged clothing, such as sparkly booty shorts with attached suspenders. An extended look at the book reveals stuff that looks perfectly suited to Lohan. Although the over-the-knee boots feel a little dated, at least they're not a style that would lead to thigh spillage. But most designers got over that tarty stuff for fall 2010. See more at In Style. [In Style]

Fat Elvis Impersonator Can’t Believe He Dated Mischa Barton

Ugh, Brandon Davis. The man made famous for being the first bacon-wrapped human being to comment on the color of Lindsay Lohan’s pubic hairs has now moved his lardmouthed pursuits to publicly attack ex-girlfriend Mischa Barton.

By now, you’ve seen the photos of Mischa donning a pair of high-waisted (high/wasted) yellow jeans. Flattering they weren’t. But you know, in a way it’s refreshing to see a celebrity who isn’t put together by a stylist. What would this world be like without our share of hot messes?

Yes, we can all agree these pants/that shirt were not a great idea. But the LAST PERSON ON EARTH who should have any opinion about what other people look like is Brandon Davis. And yet, his Twitter:

As my internet friend Claire Zulkey points out, “@BrandonDavis14 Hey d*ckhead. Get it right. It’s ‘heifer.’” Sssssnap!

Can someone please fill me in on who raised this guy? Because two people who could produce the most worthless people on the planet — Brandon and his brother Jason “Gummi Bear” Davis, the posterchild for overweight sweaty privileged cokeheads — should either be shot or immediately cast on Dancing with the Stars.

Brandon, do you even have any idea how worthless you are? Or is because you know exactly how worthless you are that you act in the way you do?

As far as Mischa is concerned, don’t worry girl. You might be completely out of your mind, but we’re on your side. And just because you’re still the same nutcase we fell in love with years ago, here’s a GIF to keep handy when you’re feeling down:

I Fear For The Day The Situation’s Abs Become The Slightest Bit Imperfect

I pre-emptively sympathize with The Situation from Jersey Shore for the one day in the future when some paparazzo snaps a photo of him shirtless with his abs looking the slightest bit imperfect.

It may not happen for many years. It may not happen for many decades — he may well be floating around shirtless coming out of our televisions on Jersey Shore In Space IMAX 3-D Brought To You By Future Justin Bieber Company in the year 20XX with his abs still looking amazing. But eventually, TMZ or some post-apocalyptic TMZ Gossip Cyborg is gonna snap a photo of his abs the moment they become in any way flabby (probably in his 90s) and post it all over the space internet with space headlines like “The Situation Is That The Situation Has Let Himself Go!!!” and the pics will go space-viral and our Martian Overlords will all have a good laugh levitating around their office Gleepxnorff coolers. They will then discuss last night’s episode of Seinfeld 2.

Who can handle that kind of ab-pressure? For now, THISSSSS GUYYYYYYY:
