Last Night on Late Night: A Tracy Morgan Story Showdown

We've covered the trend of celebrities telling stories about Tracy Morgan on late-night shows before, but the practice broke new barriers last night when both Chris Rock and Luke Wilson spun yarns about their Death At a Funeral co-star on separate shows. Wilson, a past offender, even managed to tell an entirely new story, indicating that this trend is far from over. Eccentric actors continued to dominate the evening when Jeff Goldblum paid a visit to Stephen Colbert on news that some cigarette filters may contain pig's blood, and there was an awkward moment on The Daily Show when Jon Stewart couldn't recall ever working with Steve Carell. Finally, Jimmy Fallon returned to Kate Gosselin's interpretive dance in excellent monologue joke. Watch our compilation to see what you missed.

Industry Roundup: Jack Black Plans to Rescue TV

Black Attack: Jack Black has signed a deal with Reveille that calls for him to produce scripted comedies for TV and the internet along with unscripted and animated projects. Black, who got his start on TV with Tenacious D, announced his return to the small screen like a superhero: "Don't worry TV...Help is on the way!" [HR]

Human Giant: Aziz Ansari's meteoric rise to stardom is about to hit its highest point yet as the Parks and Rec star is in talks to star in 30 Minutes or Less, an action comedy from Ben Stiller's production company. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), the film revolves around a junior high history teacher and a pizza delivery man who have to rob a bank after one of them is forced to wear a vest with a bomb on it. Danny McBride is rumored to be in negotiations to play one of the men tormenting these poor suckers. [HR]

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Sunken Battleship: Taylor Kitsch has signed on to play Hopper in Peter's Berg's "adaptation'" of the game Battleship. Kitsch will play Hopper, one of the lead characters in the action-adventure and a huge fan of tater tots. [24 Frames/LA Times]

Johnny Two Times: Universal has signed up Rowan Atkinson to revive his role as goofy British spy Johnny English in a sequel to the 2003 film. The sequel is a part of Universal's move away from edgy fare and toward relatively safe comedies. Now, you may be thinking "But the original Johnny English only made $28 million and cost $40 million to make." But you're forgetting the $133 million it made overseas. You always do that. [Variety]

Time to Attend: MGMT plans to launch a world tour in San Francisco on April 12, the same day their second album, Congratulations, comes out. The tour will take them across the western part of the U.S. and then over to Europe. For the sake of all you MGMT fans, we hope the live show isn't as strange as the album. [NME]

Glenn Beck and Al Sharpton Meet, World Remains on Axis

Last night, Glenn Beck had Al Sharpton on his show and the world didn't explode or erupt in a giant inferno. Nor were there any massive earthquakes or natural disasters. But there was a civilized discussion between two of the most hated men in politics. Maybe they got along so well because they didn't really talk about anything. The conversation centered mainly on how they disagree with each other but support the other's right to spread ridiculous opinions. They even largely managed to avoid awkward moments (exceptions: Beck thinking Sharpton is 75 and Beck attempting to equate Tea Partiers to Civil Rights activists.). But there's a lesson in this story and it's an encouraging one: if Glenn Beck and Al Sharpton can even find things to agree on, maybe there is hope for the rest of us after all.

Will Hollywood Please Blow Up This Bridge?

This beautiful little piece of architecture is the Friendship Trail Bridge in Clearwater, Florida. Shortly after it was closed due to fears of collapse in 2008, the bridge was scheduled to be rebuilt. But it soon became clear that the cost to rebuild would triple the $13 million it would cost to tear it down. Now, rather than shell out that $13 million itself, the city is hoping someone in Hollywood might be willing to foot the bill.

"See if there is anyone, any kind of filmers, that would like to come down and blow that bridge up for a movie," Pinellas County Commissioner John Morron said Tuesday. "And they would do it under their budget, and it wouldn't cost us a thing, or very little."

This wouldn't be the first time a Florida town has enlisted Hollywood's help to blow up infrastructure. In 1991, Lethal Weapon 3 forked over 50 grand to film the demolition of Orlando's old City Hall. So in that same spirit, this seems like the perfect time to complete another trilogy. Someone call Michael Bay; it's time for Bad Boys 3.

Qatari Diplomat in False Plane Bombing Alarm

A passenger aboard a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C. to Denver was subdued by an air marshal tonight after doing something he shouldn't have been doing. Initial reports said he was trying to set his shoe on fire but now federal officials say he may have just been smoking in the restroom. To make matters even weirder, the guy is apparently a Qatari diplomat. [MSNBC]

Update: According to the Times, there was no threat. The guy was trying to smoke and, aware of his diplomatic immunity, decided to mouth off to the marshal.

Virginia Governor Admits That Slavery and Civil War Are Related

It's only been one day since Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell declared April "Confederate History Month" without mentioning slavery even once in his proclamation. Now he'd like a mulligan. Earlier tonight McDonnell's office put out a statement apologizing for the omission. In the statement, McDonnell acknowledges the evils of slavery and the prominent role it played in the Civil War, which he previously seemed to be denying. The statement also included the following text, which will be added to his proclamation.

WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history...

Glenn Beck Made $32 Million in 2009

Crazy is Glenn Beck's business and, last year, business was good. According to Forbes, Beck pulled in $32 million in the 12 months ending March 1. Most of the money was made by Mercury Radio Arts, the "entertainment company" that handles Beck's best-selling books, his lucrative website and his sold-out sweater concerts, all of which accounted for $30 million of the money he made.

Ever the capitalist, Beck isn't content with his current level of wealth. And since he doesn't really care about politics (he told Forbes "I could give a flying crap about the political process."), his plans are to make more money by rolling out more radio stations, selling more books and continuing the "never-ending quest to try to improve the quality" of what he's doing. At least that last one is a goal we can all support.

Cash from controversy: Glenn Beck made $32 M in the last year, says Forbes [NYDN]

American SuicIdol: Didgeridon’t Let Me Down

Oh, American Idol. No matter how awful your contestants may be, or how many times I may loudly announce that I am over and done with this season, we both know the truth. Much like homosexual cowboys in the 1960s, I just can’t quit you.1

And for good reason! Even your trainwrecks are sublime television. Take last night’s theme, The Beatles, where each contestant lent a hand in digging up the corpse of John Lennon and then publicly urinating all over him while Ringo stood off on the sidelines, crying. OK, we’re being a little harsh. Certain singers were alright! Casey James’ “Jealous Guy” gave me goosebumps… and not only because of the results of his amazing curl activator.

But Katie Stevens is still failing to impress me. Like, even drunk at karaoke I’d be flipping the pages of the song book with my vodka straw hanging out of my mouth in boredom. Andrew Garcia is still weirding me out with those eyes, and if I have to see Michael Lynche lick his lips one more gee-dee time… he’s almost taught me to hate mouths as a whole. And Siobhan Magnus WHAT HAPPENED? You were our absolute favorite!! And you’re starting to sound like a dying giraffe.

But nothing… NOTHING… could come close to by far the highlight of Idol last night: The Bagpiper Cameo from Heaven. I mean. It was just one of those glorious television moments that happen so rarely, but when they do happen, are so freaking precious. The bagpiper was the Titanic necklace of American Idol last night.

Here is a brand new American SuicIdol: Beatles Week Edition. People with epilepsy and/or irrational fear of didgeridoos might want to steer clear.

1 And the award for the timeliest reference of the day goes to…

Fergie Covers Elle; May or May Not Have Peed Her Pants

Check out Fergie’s knowing “Maybe I peed my pants a little” stare on the cover of the brand new issue of Elle, on newsstands April 14:

It’s that exact coy urination smirk that keeps us coming back for more Fergie. Oh, and the fact that she dates probably the hottest celebrity we have ever laid eyes on in person, the staggeringly gorgeous Josh Duhamel. This interview reveals a lot of things about Fergie that we previously were not aware of. For example, she has a pretty hilarious eating disorder…

On curbing her appetite:

“I’m not going to lie: There are times I play mind tricks on myself, like that the french fries are poison. With desserts, I’ll let myself have just one bite, but I’ll look like a freak when I’m eating it, like when I did Duncan Hines commercials as a kid, just savoring every morsel.”

Note to Self: Do anything you have to do to get video of Fergie eating a bite of dessert. Be rewarded with infiniLOLz.

In other news, here’s Fergie talking about her perceived fugliness:

On criticism from gossipmongers:

“It has hurt me in the past when people say things like how ‘fugly’ I am or how horrible I look. I’ve had to learn not to give it such a high priority in life…. Look, when you’re trying to juggle all of this in your life, sometimes you’re not going to look perfect. I don’t have time to get a facial every couple of days.”

Pretty sure the facials aren’t the issue here, Fergs.

But perhaps the funniest Fergie answer, the answer that made us realize that those crazy Black Eyed Peas robo-hats she wears might actually be put in place to keep the “alien waves” out of her brain, was this…

On her relationship style:

“I’m a relationship girl, a romantic. When I was younger, I used to be the cheater. I’m not talking about going all the way—I wasn’t doing that in high school! But I’d have boyfriends, and then spring break would come around and I’d be a little bit naughty.”

You know… a relationship girl who was a slutty high school cheater. Josh, YOU DON’T HAVE TO STAND FOR THIS. You need someone who gonna treat you right.

Bristol Palin Abstinence PSA Will Make You Pause Before You Puke

Dear Young Sluts of America,

You’re young, you’re bored, your hormones are raging, and Bobby Van Jon just asked you to go on a drive with him in his van. What’s a young slut to do?

Well according to Bristol Palin, 50 percent of whoms blood is coursing with Sarah Palin’s DNA and mother of little Tripp, you should put your p*ssy on pause. Or so she instructs you to do, young slut, in her latest PSA which will not only make you not want to get pregnant, it will also make you resent your completely unfamous, useless parents.

Yes, without famous parents, being a single teenage mom is impossible. Like… you’d have to wear Gap jeans… and live in a studio apartment with just your baby.

Hol’ up. I currently live with 500 roommates and don’t even have a couch. What the ish? I need a baby ess tee ay tee. It’s my ticket to interior design minimalism! But yeah, this PSA is pointless with just a hint of self-satisfaction.

On the bright side… Baby Timberlands!! T_T

Hanson Has a Fever, and the Only Cure Is More Cowbell

Taylor Hanson scored some cool points for teaming up with James Iha and Adam Schlesinger in Tinted Windows, but that doesn’t mean he’s abandoning his main gig. Hanson’s coming back with a new album, Shout It Out, on June 8, and released their new single, “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’” earlier this week (this is no comeback, by the way: they’ve been churning the music out since you were not being forced to pay attention “MMMbop.”) How is it? Extremely competent! It’s a bright pop-rock breakup song, lots of big horns and moderately funky guitar. We would definitely rather hear this on the radio than, say, Train. Also, there is a whole bunch of what we are assuming is cowbell on the intro, giving us all the excuse we need to write the above headline.

Terry Richardson Would Like Men Willing to Pose Nude to E-mail Him

The new issue of The Journal contains a Q&A with Terry Richardson, whose purported sexcapades on shoots recently died down in the news. Richardson discussed everything from picking up girls at the gym to discovering the joys of sex — and the dearth of men willing to pose nude.

He loves shooting male nudes. Are YOU male and willing? Email him!

I love shooting guys. Some of my favorite pictures over the years have been the things I've done with guys. In a commercial context too, there's no hair or makeup with guys, which is great. I love shooting nudes of guys, but it's harder to get guys to do full nudes, I don't know why, but they don't want to show their junk. I love doing guys. If there are any guys out there that want to get naked you can email: model@terryrichardson.com.

He may or may not get checked out by men in the locker room.

Sometimes while I'm working out I've felt like I'm being cruised a bit. At the gym, I don't fuck around, I don't take showers there, I grab my shit and get out. But some dude grabbed my friend's dick in the showers. My friend was like, "What the fuck are you doing?" I live close to the gym, so I come home to shower.

But he picked up a girl at the gym once.

You know, I never have. I was talking to a girl there a lot but she had a boyfriend. I've never gotten any gym action. Actually, that's not true, years ago i did. I would talk to this girl all the time and then asked for her number. Later, we hung out and ended up going to her place, and were fooling around and I realized her body was a mess, she didn't work out. I asked her "What's up, you work at the gym, don't you work out" and she was like, "I work at the gym but I don't exercise." There is nothing wrong with not exercising but i was a little disappointed, it's like false advertising.

Not all shoots go spectacularly well.

Sometimes you meet people and it's not that you don't get along, but you're just not vibing. At times, there's just not much energy and it can be anticlimactic. When that happens I just try to do something simple, like lean them against a wall.

Drugs and alcohol prevented him from enjoying sex.

I don't think I started having sex until I quit drinking, because when I was drinking and taking drugs, I preferred getting loaded to having sex. I was a late bloomer, because once I got sober I was like, "Wow, sex is awesome, this is crazy," and then it became like a drug. You become addicted, like a sex addict or whatever, and I did all of these photographs because it was new for me. I've grown out of that phase, which was coming out of working through live and just tripping out.

Wait, he called himself a sex addict?

Yeah, like David Duchovny, just kidding ... No, I don't identify myself that way. Sex is intense. Sex, food, drugs, shopping, alcohol, the gym, plastic surgery, collecting art, there are all of these things that people get a rush from or become obsessed with. Sex then was never an addiction but a kind of obsession, and it was fun. It was all during the day and there were people everywhere and the energy was incredible. To me, it was like a happening.

Spitzer: ‘I’ve Never Said I Would Never Consider Running for Office Again’

"I love politics," Spitzer tells Fortune editor-at-large Peter Elkind, who asked him whether he'd consider a run for public office this year. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld Prefers to Call Her Friends ‘Elegant’ Rather Than ‘Classy’

Julia (right) with Pop editor Dasha Zhukova.

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld was hesitant to call her group of friends classy last night — even though we spoke to her at the launch of Derek Blasberg's new book, Classy. "All my friends are pretty classy, I guess. No, I don't want to say classy. All my friends are pretty elegant with good manners," she said. Her favorite (classy, if you will) trends for spring are khaki and military-inspired styles, which she wore last night. "And, uh, enough with black," she continued. "Like, you should mix black with colors. But not all black. It's too sunny out for black — you have to have color."

Simon Doonan doesn't consider the cast of Jersey Shore classy, but forgives them since they're "at least fun." "I love the Jersey Shore. It's great," he told us. "I met Vinny and Pauly D at a party, and [my husband Jonathan Adler] and I were so excited to meet them that I think we scared them to death, 'cause we were just fizzing and squealing like demented fans." But Doonan didn't freak them out too much. "My sister-in-law, fortunately, was there and she's very busty and sexy, so it made it okay. She was there to kind of decoy them a bit, so they weren't so terrified," he explained. "I said, 'I love you. I've written about you in my column. You're so great.' I said, 'Do you know the New York Observer?' And they didn't."

Zac Posen, meanwhile, was excited for the 24-hour pop-up shop Target will open next Thursday to celebrate the launch of his collection for the retailer. "I am the 24-hour party," he said when we brought it up. He won't stay for the whole thing, but said, "I'll find ways to come in and out," he assured us. "I'll be reappearing at many different moments."

Will Steve Cohen Settle?

Just when it seemed that the bitter, two-decade divorce war being fought between Steven A. Cohen, the billionaire hedge-fund master, and his ex-wife Patricia couldn't get any worse, yesterday she expanded her claims and upped her demands in a refiling of a previously withdrawn suit. She wants a part of his company, SAC Capital Advisors, which invests over $12 billion, and last year made Cohen himself some $1.4 billion, of which at most $150,000 ended up in the bank accounts of Patricia and their children. It's an extravagant ask — mostly designed to grab attention, especially Steve's — but the kind of opening volley that sometimes leads to a rational working-out of differences.

The outlandish ask is obviously an opening gambit, leading to a final resolution of their differences (although given the tortured history of their post-marriage relationship, it is very hard to imagine that anything would be really, truly final). But that, at any rate, is what she said she wants.

"I don't understand why he doesn't settle," I said to her one day over tea while reporting my recent feature on the pair. "From your mouth to God's ears," she said.

And it might happen, partly because Patricia is hitting the secretive hedgie where it could hurt. Does he really want to have claims that twenty years ago he cheated his ex out of her rightful share dragged through the courts, with all the discovery that such a thing would entail?

Patricia believes that Steve is the type to settle. It's a matter of character. As she wrote in an e-mail obtained by New York Magazine, "He'll blow wind for a time to see if he can get away with it but there is no way he is ever going to allow himself to be forced to sit there and be deposed." According to Patricia's study of her ex, "based on his history he always settles," she wrote. And she views settling as rational. "What will he say, 'Yes I screwed her and my children, but I'm afraid, Your Honor, that the statute of limitations has run out'? That might suffice for a car salesman," she wrote.

For Steve, settling might be rational. After all, the publicity around the suit "affects my business," he recently told a friend — "investors ask me." And he could write a check "of any size," as Patricia puts it. A settlement would be little more than a rounding error.

But rationality, in short supply in any divorce, seems to be nonexistent in this one. Patricia's humiliated; Steve's insulted. She's had to request and, as she sees it, sometimes beg for money. As he sees it, he's been generous with her, providing $400,000 in child support and education and other expenses in some years — and she never, ever says thank you.

So, for the time being, Steve insists he wants a fight, and Steve can be a brutal fighter. As a first tactic, he may go after her attorney, Gaytri Kachroo, claiming she should be sanctioned for filing a frivolous suit, as he did with Patricia's previous attorney. Then, despite Patricia's view, Steve's advisers say he will contend that the statute of limitations long ago ran out. Her claims go back to their divorce settlements twenty years ago. "This will never get to court," one of his advisers told me a few weeks ago.

That's not necessarily Steve's view. For him, it's not about money and it never was. "I want a court decision," he told an associate a few weeks ago.

Man Arrested for Threats Against Nancy Pelosi

Instead of just silently wishing doom and despair on her, like many of Nancy Pelosi's critics, one Northern California man threatened the Speaker of the House directly — calling her dozens of times at her homes in California and Washington, even speaking with her directly and issuing a threat that if she ever wanted to see her home again, she should back down on health care. This news comes on the heels of charges filed against harassers of Senator Patty Murray, a Democratic senator from Washington, and Representative Eric Cantor, a Republican. Three's a trend, everybody!

You Might Be Great At Basketball, 10-Year-Old Kid, But Can You Buy Beer? Yeah, That’s What I Thought.

I’m terrible at basketball, as I am at most things, so the fact that this 10-year-old kid is way better than me doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Kids are good at stuff. I write words into an internet thing. Diff’rent strokes for kids and pokes, ya know? That’s not an expression anyone’s ever said? See, I suck at those too.

It’s YOU who should be embarrassed that this kid is way better than you at basketball. And if you also suck at basketball, I’m not talking to you either, I’m talking to Dwight Howard, who is standing right behind you.

At least I’m still better at stuff than this kid. That’s about it.

30 Rock Parent Company Kabletown Gets Its Own Website

Kabletown, the 30 Rock-based cable giant and new parent company of Sheinhardt/Universal, has launched its own website: www.kabletown.com

Looks like Ajira Airways has some company in the fake-websites for companies mentioned in shows we watch department.

Kabletown’s mission statement:

At Kabletown, we respond rapidly to the speed of change. We have a team of well-trained technicians eager to assist our customers. For example, if your “box is being weird” or “the thing just keeps saying ‘boot’” or “the DVR won’t stop recording ‘Top Chef Masters’ even though I hate it,” we will be there. We know you have a choice when it comes to your cable provider. Let Kabletown bring entertainment to you, because you bring entertainment to Kabletown. Maybe this slogan doesn’t make a lot of sense, but consider that our slogan guy, Gary, was in the hospital when he came up with it.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d almost think they were making fun of a real-life corporate cable entity… Does Musselman’s have a cable service? It’s probably that. Take THAT, Musselman’s cablesauce!

Check Out Good Housekeeping’s Photoshop Job on Michelle Obama

Good Housekeeping, Sean Gallup/Getty Images

Michelle Obama appears on next month's Good Housekeeping cover looking not quite herself. Absent are any fine lines everyone knows she has. Her dimples have also been dimmed, while her hair looks almost plastic (as you can see, they had to cut out her head to fit it over the Good Housekeeping logo, and didn't soften the edges). The lighting is also off on her face, our resident retouching expert notes, suggesting the magazine may have put Michelle's head from one shot on her body from another shot. Good Housekeeping could be forgiven for not keeping up with fashion trends (retouching is out! Haven't they heard?), but this is Michelle Obama! Our First Lady! People know her skin isn't the same texture as a Barbie doll's, and they probably don't want it to be. We have celebrities for that.

Suzanne Rae Gives Silk and Chiffon a Fringe-Trimmed Flourish

While most young designers spend years as interns and design assistants before setting out on their own, Suzanne Pelaez, the Brooklynite behind the young label Suzanne Rae, opted for a more direct route. After rebuffing her acceptance to medical school to attend the year-long AAS Fashion Design program at Parsons, Pelaez spent just six months each at Costume National and Morgane Le Fay before launching her own label. "Truthfully, with my first collection, I just wanted to see if I was capable of doing it," she says. "And now here I am." Her fall 2010 collection is her sixth to date.

Pelaez's sources of inspiration range from "the concept of the boudoir to Native Americans to the fifties housewife," she says. "It’s as if each collection of mine is a sort of thesis on a different topic, involving history, philosophy, sociology, and design." The resulting designs are confident and feminine. With her liberal use of cutouts, ruffles, and fringe, Pelaez aims to be "progressively thought-provoking," she says. Suzanne Rae is manufactured entirely in the garment district — an increasing rarity — and is stocked at Eva and Jumelle. Click ahead to see more looks from her spring 2010 line.

Jonathan ‘Lord of the Hair’ Antin Reinvents Self With New Show!

It was a devastating time for Bravo when Blow Out, which chronicled the life and times of hairstylist lord Jonathan Antin, went off the air. He was astoundingly passionate about doing hair — his and others' — and no matter how much he ran himself ragged making hair goo and $600 house calls, he always looked fresh from a chemical peel. He returned to Bravo as a judge on Shear Genius this season, but it's not the same as watching him run around the country raving over how good it feels to wash his hair with bottled water. But those joyous moments could return to the screen again!

Jonathan tells StyleList:

I have a new line coming out called Jonathan Antin Hair Care, I'm opening a new Jonathan Antin Salon and I just signed a deal for a new TV show. I'm reinventing myself!

Hopefully he uses the term reinvent loosely, because we love him just as he is.

We instantly join Des waking up in the clutches of Zoe (aka “Fake Tina Fey” – Every Commenter Ever) with no Previously On Lost segment (how’d they get on this island??), waking up disoriented and asking for Penny and joking “Wouldn’t it SUCK if I was on the island, where I promised myself and Penny 600 times I’d never go again?” Charles Widmore quickly greets him and explains “Good morning, son in law I’m underwhelmed with, you’re on the island! You’ve been WIDMORE’D! I’m shooting the pilot for a new elaborate island-related prank show.”

Desmond reacts to the news as anyone would: By instantly beating the crap out of Widmore, also known as “Season 4 Bennin’ It”. Widmore’s men calm Desmond down, restrain him, and beat him up a little bit for no damn reason, then prepare their box o’ electromagnetism, which they accidentally test by setting off once and frying some extra. Widmore is confident Desmond can withstand the electroride, according to “everything I’ve heard about you,” presumably because Desmond has his constant and can withstand time travel, or possibly because the show wouldn’t randomly kill off an actual character in that lightbox.

A bright light flashes, and a completely unfazed Desmond wakes up in a flash-sideways collecting his luggage at LAX, hits on Claire a little bit (waaait a minuuuute…what about Penny? Are they not together in this reality or something, cause that would be SOOO SIDEWAYS). If we thought Sawyer’s flash-sideways was Opposite Day, hoooo-boy, was Desmond’s life different — let us count the ways:

  • Desmond is single and unaware of Penny’s existence.
  • Desmond not only works for Widmore, he’s Widmore’s most trusted employee.
  • Desmond is worthy of sharing Widmore’s scotch (after Widmore drank his billion-dollar pirate juice in front of Des back in Season 2).
  • Desmond is black.
  • Desmond calls everyone “sistah”.
  • Desmond wears his shoes on his head and hats on his feet and all the buildings are upside-down.

The episode took one of Lost’s occasional “What is this, Sex And The City?” unsubtle turns, spelling out Desmond’s situation so explicitly, it might as well have been half F-words: His limo driver notices he isn’t wearing a wedding band, then Widmore points out “You sure have the life! No attachments! Isn’t that different that who you might’ve been in another life?” But alas, Desmond has no emergency contact at the hospital. FROWN FACE.

Can the cosmos get Desmond to rent The Family Man in time for him to realize he needs to be with Penny? Find out after the jump:

MORE LIKE DRIVE-RECKLESSLY-SHAFT

Desmond’s first task in his new reality? Widmore needs him to babysit a bassist who choked on heroin and just got arrested. Lemmie guess…Charlie? Aw, no way, it’s Keamy again!! Didn’t see that coming.

Desmond grabs Charlie from the copz, and the two proceed to re-enact a classic viral video:

However, Charlie’s flagrant badittude isn’t just a record label mandate to make him seem like the bad boy in Driveshaft — he’s seen visions of his true love in some other world and knows she’s real, and no longer buys the whole flash-sideways charade. Desmond only half pays attention, until Charlie wheels their car into a salmon hatchery or something, and as Desmond is rescuing him from the water, he sees clips from Season Two of Charlie holding up “not Penny’s boat” written on his hand.

Des is taken aback by the vision, but decides “no big deal, I’ll just get a nice, non-memory-inducing MRI to calm me down and forget about this whole mess,” but during the MRI his other-world memory goes apesh*t, and he vividly recalls being with Penny, then hits the MRI panic button and storms out of the hospital in pursuit of this character. For some reason, the MRI technician isn’t Walt.

MEET THE HAWKINGS

Desmond arrives at a musical event for Widmore’s son, and at Widmore’s request has to explain to Mrs. Widmore (who is Rose) that Driveshaft won’t be performing as planned. Mrs. Hawking/Widmore/Hawkmore cares a lot less about this bad news than she cares about knife placement, which surprises Desmond, but when Desmond then overhears that someone named “Penny” is coming to the event, he tries to read the guest list and Mrs. Hawking flips her all-knowing-lid. It turns out, she probably did care about the lack of Driveshaft, but needed to get Desmond away from there as quickly as possible.

Hawkmore tells Desmond that whatever he thinks he’s doing, to stop doing it. Demond’s like, “You mean shaving?” She answers, “No, all this time travel, Penny-finding business — you have no idea what you’re getting into and you’re not ready to see the list yet.” She drops in the Lost “Whatever happened, happened” catchphrase (they’re trying to spin that phrase off into an SNL movie), and leaves Desmond shaken and confused yet again, just as he was in the other reality when he tried to buy a wedding ring from Mrs. Hawking and she was like “NO RING I KNOW EVERYTHING STOP THIS TIME TRAVEL BS!”

Desmond leaves the event but is approached by Hawking’s son Daniel Faraday, now Daniel Widmore the musician, who tells Desmond that he too had visions of his phantom true love and describes seeing Charlotte and instantly knowing that he loved her, just as Charlie loved Claire and Desmond loved Penny and Widmore loved Ben (just make-up sex already, you two). Daniel shows Desmond a book of ultracomplex physics equations that he wrote down after the Charlotte visions, which explain in more complicated math than he’s capable of knowing (he’s writing in tongues) that he once set off a nuclear bomb, and that indeed, everything in this reality is kind of…off (uhhhh, we know dude, we saw Slightly-Less-Creepy Dr. Ethan).

Daniel tells Desmond where to find Penny — Daniel’s half-sister! — and Desmond meets her in the same stadium he once met Jack, thus marking a massive improvement in this reality. He chats with Penny briefly then immediately flashes back to the island just long enough to encounter Sayid, who murders some of his handlers and tells him “these people are dangerous, come with me” and Daniel complies, exuding an apathy similar to that of Charlie in the sideways-flash. Desmond flashes back to the stadium, learns that he fainted in front of Penny, and kicks sideways destiny in the balls by asking her out for a coffee. Penny agrees. Destiny!

In the final shot of the episode, Desmond asks George the limo driver to take him to the coffee shop, and asks if George can get him a copy of the Oceanic flight register. Why? “I just need to show them something.” LOST. Now I just need something to wear, amIright?? LOST AGAIN.

WHAT WE MAYBE LEARNED

– Desmond appears to be unstuck in time again by the episode’s end; no one else was fainting in their flash-sidewayses when the show jumped back and forth, and no appeared to learn/retain information from the flash-sideways into the island reality or vice versa aside from a vague, isolated detail here or there. As Widmore guessed, Desmond appears to be the only one who can do something about rectifying the two realities. I thought it would’ve been up to Hurley’s Dad – way off on that prediction.

– There’s a connection between people in the flash-sideways seeing their “true loves” and having visions or memories of their island lives. It happened to Desmond, Charlie, and Daniel, but what about Locke, who lived his entire flash-sideways with his loving wife and didn’t appear to have any island knowledge? Was this because his wife was never on the island at any point? Or is his true love actually, like, Ana Lucia? Also, note that Sawyer’s flash-sideways cut off just as he saw Kate; maybe we’ll learn that this triggered something? Other than a BONER! High-five!!! Did I mention I have a fifth grade class in my office right now and I’m trying to get them to high five me for my Lost writing? I thought I mentioned that in the italics up top.

– When Des tells Claire “I’ll bet it’s a boy,” does he actually subliminally possess this knowledge, or is it just a random small-talky throwaway line? If it’s not the first thing, then blow me, Lost producers.

Overall, as one would expect from a Desmond episode, last night’s ep was extremely entertaining, at least enough for me to overlook the Oliver Stone level of subtlety in explaining Desmond’s life situation. Plus it’s a bit of a “careful what you wish for” scenario; we’re always clamoring for things to be explained more clearly, so we shouldn’t complain when the producers do exactly that. Next week, Damon Lindelof’s gonna open the episode by standing at a podium reading off the things that are different in Hurley’s flash-sideways life with a Powerpoint presentation, ending with “Alright, now on to the episode.” Unfortunately, this will set off an internet firestorm of “but was that actually the producer reading to us or has that not happened yet?”, but, well, we’re Lost-watchers — this is the life we’ve chosen for ourselves.

Only five episodes to go, with Hurley on deck — thoughts on last night’s episode? Theories? Questions? Predictions? Leave ‘em in another comments section, brothah (no, this one).
