Paras Mhambrey trains Akshay Kumar for Patiala House

Akshay Kumar Akshay Kumar is taking his ace-bowler's role in a forthcoming film Patiala House dead seriously. Ever since he returned from his back-therapy in Germany, Akshay has been training rigorously under former test cricketer Paras Mhambrey. Currently working with the team members of the IPL's Mumbai Indians, Mhambrey has been taking time off to coach Akshay whenever possible. Akshay wants to continue training steadily and regularly so that his bowling skills are super-sharpened by the time he starts shooting. Says the Patiala House director Nikhil Advani, "Akshay has been training diligently and religiously. His coach Paras Mhambrey even joined him at Malshej Ghat for Farah's film. Because right after that our cricket sequences start in London." Advani's British sports co-ordinator Robert Miller who co-ordinated the hockey and cricket scenes in Chak De and Dil Bole Hadippa, respectively, is down in Mumbai right now finalizing the list of international cricketers who will play with Akshay Kumar in Patiala House. Explains Advani, "We're looking at international cricketers from all over the world…England, South Africa, Australia, Bangladesh…The fact that the IPL matches are on makes our job easier because Robert can meet and negotiate with a lot of international cricketers while they are here." The film also requires county-level and regional cricketers whom Miller will finalize once the big-name cricketers are finalized. Says Advani, "I basically need the cricketers from May 25 to June 5 for the various games that we'll be shooting in England. So we can work our schedules according to the cricketers' date diaries." This, admits Advani, is easier said than done. "I've a real uphill task ahead. And I've stopped sleeping with anxiety. But I've one expert cricketer on my team already. My leading man Akshay Kumar. You've to see how well he bowls now." Apparently, so bowled over is Akshay by his coach Paras Mhambrey that he now intends to request the former test cricketer to train his son Aarav as well.

"Prince is full-on entertainer like Race or Dhoom 2" - Vivek Oberoi

Vivek Oberoi His could well be termed as the rise from the ashes. Down, though definitely not out till about a couple of years back, things had started moving for Vivek Oberoi when he began work on Prince and Kurbaan. Though Kurbaan didn't turn out to be spectacular from commercial standpoint, it still managed to fetch him the kind of visibility and critical acclaim that he was hoping for. And now with Prince seeing the kind of a massive solo lead release which is traditionally enjoyed only by the actors belonging to superstar league, Vivek has all the right reasons to believe that finally he has a good platform from where he can only soar higher. In a tête-à-tête with Joginder Tuteja, Vivek talks about the great situation that he is finding himself in today with his career showing an upswing all over again. Vivek, are you satisfied with the buzz which has been created for Prince or would you have wanted it to be a little more? Honestly, I am over the moon with the buzz. The promos are a rage, especially on the internet. In fact I am told that on Bollywood Hungama itself, the promos have broken records in terms of number of hits. The music too is burning the charts in the UK, USA, UAE and of course India. So far it has been a dream and I only expect the momentum to reach its peak this Friday. Fingers crossed. There is no scare factor involved. We all are quite confident about the film's prospects While it is only a few hours to go for the release, even you would agree that Prince took taken its own sweet time to get to this point. What took the film so long to be made? Making a film of this quality and scale on an international level takes only three things: 1) Time, 2) Time and 3) more time (winks). Any quality product takes time and we all believe that Prince was really worth it after all! In the recent past, out and out action flicks like Luck and Acid Factory haven't quite worked with the audiences. Doesn't that make you a little scared about the film's prospects? The biggest advantage of Prince is that it has a great story at heart, an interesting screenplay full of twists and turns and a fresh premise. It is not mindless action in isolation. The awesome music is yet another bonus. So yeah, to answer your question, there is no scare factor involved. We all are quite confident about the film's prospects. Heist films too have seen mixed luck coming their way over the last few years. While Kaante has been the most memorable and successful of the lot, the technology and cinematic quotient too has taken huge leaps over last few years. Has Prince managed to take a step ahead? Prince is more in the full-on entertainer space of films like Race or Dhoom 2. The film is a great blend of global and local flavour. While the technology and action is truly international with a global look and packaging, at heart Prince is an absolute Bollywood style entertainer which qualifies for being a 'paisa vasool seetimaar' film!" There appears to be some really daring all around stunts happening in the film... Yes, we believe that Prince takes Bollywood action to another level altogether. In fact, it took me 5 months of rigorous training to be able to pull off those phenomenal stunts all by myself without using a body double. The stunts and action sequences in the film are surely going to set your heart racing! Prince is more in the full-on entertainer space of films like Race or Dhoom 2 The film has as many as three leading ladies - Aruna Shields, Nandana Sen and Neeru Singh. It must have been some experience to be surrounded by such pretty women... All three lovely Mayas are very integral part to the film's plot (smiles). There is a very interesting twist where in the midst of everything, Prince has to figure out that which one of these girls is stating the truth and which one is his true love - the real Maya. It was a pleasure working with my lovely leading ladies and they have brought great freshness to the film. Vivek Oberoi Prince arrives in the time period when no single film has worked at the box office. During last 6-7 weeks, there have been a couple of dozen box office disasters already. Do you really feel it is the right time, especially with IPL also in the running? On the contrary I feel that this is the best time for a film to arrive because Prince is the only big film releasing in April. Also, with diminishing interests in the IPL amongst audience, we hope they will come out and enjoy this mega treat - Prince - in the theatres. Last but definitely not the least Vivek, in a way don't you feel that life has come back full circle for you after so many years? Finally, you are being interviewed on your films and performance rather than what is happening in your personal life? Thank you for saying that (smiles). Yes, it is indeed a great feeling. I am so happy and grateful for this amazing change. I intend to keep it this way by only focusing on my one true love - Acting!

Nana Patekar embarrasses Ranbir Kapoor

Nana Patekar That they got along like a house on fire during the shooting of Raajneeti is a well-known fact. And the main reason for it was their frank and forthright nature. Both Nana and Ranbir call a spade and don't care for the repercussions. During their long schedule in Bhopal, Nana and Ranbir had many meals together (to which no other member of the crew was invited) and discussed all things cinema from Raj Kapoor to Mehul Kumar. But the fact that Nana's blunt speak could cause Ranbir public embarrassment had not been foreseen by the younger actor. So it happened on Saturday in Delhi during a public event for Raajneeti. In front of media persons Nana declared Ranbir had no faith in the last film that starred Ranbir and Katrina, namely Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. For a minute there was a stunned silence among the stars of Raajneeti, especially Katrina who tried not to look anxious and embarrassed. Laughs Prakash, "Yes this incident did happen. A media person asked Nana if he feels Raajneeti would be a success. Nana rightly replied there's no predicting the box-office. That Ranbir had no faith in Ajab Prem …which was such a success. You know how Nana is. He speaks from the heart. " Though Ranbir seemed quite cool with Nana's heart talk one wonders what the Ajab Prem... director Raj Kumar Santoshi feels about it.

Bollywood reaches Macau Hotels

Making it a first of sorts, Studio 18 has pushed the envelope on emerging rights by licensing the Hotel VoD rights of five top TIFC films for China & Macau - JAB WE MET, WELCOME, SINGH IS KINNG, KIDNAP and GOLMAAL RETURNS. The globalisation of Bollywood and the enormous tourist traffic in China is expected to trigger an uptake of these titles. While Hollywood studios are known to place their blockbusters in hotel rooms for customers to pay and watch, Bollywood content had not made any significant breakthrough so far. Conventionally, films sourced by established hotels in the region comprise adult and non-adult content from US, China, Japan, Europe and Korea. TIFC's Indian titles will be placed on the interactive entertainment system of bedrooms in three of the topmost hotels of Macau - Venetian, Sands Casino and Four Seasons. Remarked Tanuj Garg, Head of International Business, Studio 18, "This initiative with our preferred content aggregator is in line with our continuing endeavour to create new and unconventional revenue streams for the organisation's library titles and keep their monetization active."

"JKSAH was RGV's idea of love story of a girl from Venus" - Riteish Deshmukh

Ritesh Deshmukh There are love stories and then there are love stories. So what's so different about Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai? Well, it's the baby born out of Ram Gopal Varma's head of thoughts. A one line idea then executed by writer director Milap Zaveri. Don't get scared. It's not a scary love story. A girl from Venus comes in search for a guy from the Earth. That's a one liner. Got it? So how can there be diversity in a film like JKSAH? The answer is - Riteish Deshmukh. It's not about his comic timings and intelligence as an actor. It's about him doing hundred comic roles and yet be different and loved by all in his hundred and first film. That's Deshmukh. He is a darling. He can make you smile and laugh at the same time. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel gets into a quickie with Riteish to know more about the film, Milap, and Jacqueline of course. Streets of Mumbai have people asking - Jaane Kahan Se Aaya Hai. This is your solo film after a long long time I don't think any solo film can be a re-invention by an actor. Yes, it is the truth that after a long time I'm doing a solo film. It just happened that everything fell in place. JKSAH was a solo film I always wanted to be a part of, not that I wasn't offered earlier. I didn't feel that some of the films I got offered were the right kind of solo projects. You need the right kind of an idea first. Milap had that intact. Milap Zaveri is a good writer and keeps on challenging himself first which in turn becomes challenging for us actors too What's so challenging in doing a comic role again and again, and how can you be so different? The most challenging comic performances come from how that performance is written in the screenplay. When you see a different performance, you will always see a different writing there. Milap Zaveri is a good writer and keeps on challenging himself first which in turn becomes challenging for us actors too. How different or same is Milap the writer and Milap the director? Milap Zaveri is a very good writer and a good director too. It's the craft of that man that is bigger than everything. There is no comparison between Milap the writer and Milap the director. They both are the same person and so you cannot compare them two. And what about the girl from Venus, Jacqueline Fernandez? (Laughs) Well, if she is from Venus and is so beautiful, than we definitely want more gorgeous faces from Venus to come down to Earth and enter Bollywood. We also hear that she is the next Katrina Kaif of Bollywood It's not about whether she is the next Katrina. Whether it is Katrina or Jacqueline, both are hard working actresses and have proved themselves. Eventually, everyone who makes a place for themselves in Bollywood is hardworking and audiences have accepted them here. Once the audiences give the green light to them, I don't think that anybody has the right to comment on whether they are here to stay for good or not. Ritesh Deshmukh You are improving as a dancer too. (Laughs) I won't say much on this question but the fact remains that it's only my choreographers who think that I am a good dancer (laughs). And how does Boman Irani fit into the film? It is spooky but the fact that this is the first time we have used an actor as a part of the promotions than in the film. Boman is not a part of the film. We wanted to design a promo with Boman. Even the promo idea was given to us by Ram Gopal Varma. But why not? I requested Boman to be a part of the promo and he agreed. That's good marketing Riteish No, I think it's not only about marketing, is it? It's a fresh idea put in to promote your film. Either it could've been someone else. When you have a Boman Irani doing a small part in the promo, it's very easy to relate with for the audience. It was a promo only to convey what the film is all about. Boman is a fantastic actor and there was no one who could've pulled it off like him. You get tricked that he is a part of the film. Many from the film fraternity think that you always play a safe game. When you do a Rann, that's when you take risks... Riteish Deshmukh is just an actor. He is not a safe player nor is he a risk taker. My job is to act. As an actor, I agree, that I want to do everything. But the real risk takers are the producers and the directors and the writers. And when they think of casting me, that's another risk too (laughs). For Rann, it was RGV's conviction and belief that I could pull that role off. Yes, Rann was a risk but it paid off well. Riteish Deshmukh is just an actor. He is not a safe player nor is he a risk taker And Aladin too Correct. It was. You're right. I am glad that I did Aladin. It didn't work is something different but I enjoyed being a part of Aladin. Sujoy Ghosh took his biggest risk by making the film. But it paid off when it came to the treatment and acting. It was a role that Mr. Bachchan and I will never ever get to perform in our acting career now. Do you think that the films are failing at the box office because of its writing or its direction? I think we need to have good writers and the same people should be given a chance to write different stories. I don't think that it is the writing that is failing us at the box office. It can be a bad direction, bad acting, bad editing, etc. It's a mix of all. There are so many instances in Bollywood when a good writing is screwed up by a very bad acting. JKSAH is...? ...is a love story out of this world.

"I play a whimsical, flamboyant and audacious character in Raajneeti" - Arjun

In Raajneeti, Arjun Rampal is cast as Ranbir Kapoor's zany flamboyant elder brother. The brotherly camaraderie spilt over from the screen. And the two guys were often seen chilling together on location in Bhopal including playing pranks on Katrina Kaif, though on screen they were required to be emotionally and geographically distanced from one another. Chortles Arjun, "I don't play the conventional 'Bade Bhaiyya'. It's the toughest role of my career. I had to be larger-than-life but not over-the-top. This man I play is whimsical, flamboyant and audacious. He can do anything. His kid-brother has gone abroad to study. My character has stayed back in India to create his own unpredictable world. He's in own space, though not spaced out. " Arjun was guided by his director Prakash Jha in interpreting the character. "Rock On which took my career to another level and got me National award was a dream role. I got to play a rock star! This man in Raajneeti is completely alien to me. He's a man who does the unthinkable. Do I expect another National award? No performance can be tailored for recognition." Arjun will also be doing unthinkable things in Anubhav Sinha's Ra.One where he plays the arch-villain. The main antagonist opposite Shah Rukh Khan, though he isn't required to talk about it. But before that there's Housefull which Arjun says was a laugh riot. "But it also has very emotional moments. As a director, Sajid Khan is so wonderfully clued in to what his actors can do. I worked with Farah and now her brother Sajid. Both were fun." Such was the joy of working with Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan and the whole cast that Arjun has forgotten he injured his back during the shooting of Housefull. "It was yoga and physiotherapy that helped heal my back completely, "says Arjun Rampal. "I was working out at the gym when I suffered a massive slipped disc. I was required to lose considerable weight so as to not burden my back." On a more cheerful note Arjun has lately been shooting with Kajol and Kareena Kapoor for Karan Johar's adaptation of Stepmom. He says he enjoyed being sandwiched between two women who light up the screen. "While Kajol has always been my favourite actress, Kareena is more a buddy. Kareena and I started our careers almost together, so we both bond as colleagues' friends and fans of Kajol." In Stepmom, Arjun stars as Kajol's husband and Kareena's lover. "It's wonderful to have two such gorgeous actresses as my co-star. But honestly, today I'm confident enough to create my own space in a film."
