Subhash K. Jha speaks on Tum Milo Toh Sahi

Tum Milo Toh Sahi Just for the pleasure of watching Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia together, this quaint and sincere look at love across three generations is well worth a dekko. Dimple Kapadia, exuding a warmth that pervades the screen plays a feisty Parsi woman who isn't deterred let alone defeated by attempts to dismantle her dream, namely a strategic cafe where Mumbai-wallahs meet like they still do in cafe's all over Kolkata for a bit of a brany pow-wow and buttery pao. It all adds up. The feisty Parsi lady and the cranky sullen unhappy-with-life lawyer (Nana Patekar) who helps her keep her property and not-so-promptly falls in love with the lady. You get the picture? Rajen Makhijana, Sameer Siddiqui and Kabir Sadanand's screenplay cruises the realm of the known but still provides elements of freshness in the way the predictable characters are framed and photographed. DOP Pushan Kriplani adds an afterglow to the already-seen characters' lives. You could feel the characters' feelings, if you care. There are three sets of people falling in and out of love, stumbling along that path to mutual fulfillment strewn with roses and pricks...The human kind as well! This is a film that finally exudes the scent and strength of goodness. The Dimple-Nana relationship is endearing in its nostalgic references. Both are in splendid form. The next generation's angst is represented by Sunil Shetty (restrained in a quiet but forcible way) and the surprise-packet Vidya Malvade. Tum Milo Toh Sahi Now why is our film industry not allowing this lovely actress to have her say? Director Kabir Sadanand gives all his principal actors room to blossom. And that includes the third generation pair Rehaan Khan and Anjana Sukhani who are just discovering life and love. The couple is fresh eager and raring to articulate their inner world. The storytelling is moody and leisurely, like a stroll down a beachside on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The narrative has no sharp dips and curves. But director Kabir Sadanand is able to hold all his characters together, giving them a life and sustenance that takes them beyond stereotypes but not far enough to make them memorable creatures of the romantic zone. Everyone from every generation wants a piece of that shimmering sky where love is more than just a Valentine's Day slogan. Tum Milo Toh Sahi is not as sharp in its sensitivities on love as could have been. Lekin tum dekho to sahi

Anupam Kher invited to speak at TED's first conference in Mumbai

Anupam Kher Anupam Kher is surely one happy man today. And he has all the reasons to be so. On one hand, while his acting academy 'Actor Prepares' is going great guns, on the other, he is someone who is one of the most sought after persons not just in Bollywood, but in all the arenas under the sun! The latest is in the form of an invitation from the prestigious TED, a non-profit organization, which holds an event in order to get many intellectual brains under one roof. While this event gets held every year in Oxford, UK, it was only last year that it found its Indian presence. Only recently, TED started TEDx, a program that allows professionals to share ideas that's worth sharing. This event is being held today in Mumbai under the aegis of 'TEDxMumbai', which will have around 160 people, consisting of professionals from all the walks of life, including scientists, executives and students. Talking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama from the venue, Anupam Kher said, "Basically, TED is a prestigious platform where people give their ideas. Somebody had heard me speaking at Barclay Bank's conference. That's when they approached me for TED. I was honored and surprised at this offer as TED forms a very interesting stage for sharing of ideas. Normally, only scientists and philosophers can be seen here. But here I was…an actor. This time round, it was not for acting, but for my belief in the 'Power In You', to which, I strongly spoke about the fact that the power in you is much more powerful that the person outside you." When we asked him about the overall experience of TED, Anupam just summed it up in two words, "Fabulous and rejuvenating".

Kangna Ranaut doing it her way in Hi! Blitz

Kangna Ranaut If there is someone who can look stunning in black and as well as in coloured, then, it's none other than Kangna Ranaut. And to get a real life experience of the same, you don't have to swim across the seven seas. All that you need to do is simply get your hands on the latest edition of Hi! Blitz. 'Steel Magnolias' is what the headline states about a never before interview. It is in this interview, wherein, she states all about the A-Z about her life. Full marks to the conceptualizer as well as the photographer for having presented Kangna like never before and maybe never after! She does go on record to say that, "It's shameful for me to be only 22. When I am in the middle of intense conversations with people, I avoid questions about my age. I have a mind of 45-50 year-old-woman, which is scary. I don't like to tell people my age. When I have conversations with producers and directors, it's at a very human level and that's how I treat people older than me. I can't connect with people of my age: for me they are way too young. In a way, I have accepted that I feel way too old." This is just a glimpse of what to expect in this edition of Hi! Blitz.

"My mom didn't flinch even when I stripped on screen" - Maradona Rebello

Maradona Rebello Young Maradona Rebello had to do some very strange and unconventional things in his debut film Pankh, like getting smooched by a man and go completely nude in front of his screen mother, played by Lilette Dubey. Confesses Maradona, "It's been a harrowing time for me. I've given the role everything because I believed in the film. It's the story of a pushy mother and a male child who's pushed into the movies dressed as a girl. My character grows up confused about his sexuality. I had to do many things that didn't come naturally to me because I'm a straight guy I had to kiss a man, get pushed around by him." Worst of all was the cross-dressing scenes. Shivers Maradona, "When I came on the set in a dress wearing stocking and lipstick my director Sudipto-da freaked out. He was so apologetic. He asked everyone to leave the sets. I told him to chill. But in the nights I just couldn't sleep. I was harrowed. Luckily my parents supported me. They saw the film and loved my performance. My mom didn't flinch even when I stripped in front of my screen-mother." The character has changed Maradona's life. "I know I'm straight. But playing a guy confused about his sexuality can shake you completely." The boy can breathe a sigh of relief about his second film Dunno Y ... Jaane Kyun."Here I'm completely straight. In fact I'm straight in Pankh as well. But throughout the film I had to keep trying to prove to the world that I am not gay." Maradona Rebello At the climax of the film Maradona had to take off all his clothes and show his screen mom Lilette Dubey he's a man. Explains Maradona, "Right through the film she keeps taunting me that I am no man. Finally in a fit of rage I had to undress and show her that I am a man. It was a very difficult scene to do. Fortunately Lilette Dubey made me very comfortable. Before the scene she hugged me and said it'd be fine. And it was." Worst was the plight of being kissed by a man. "My co-star Amit Purohit had to kiss me right here at Marine Drive. Luckily it was the night and not too many people were around." Ironically, in his second film Maradona has an affair with his sister-in-law married to his gay brother. "I can't reveal much about the part. But I got to work with screen divas like Zeenat Aman and Helen. Not bad for my second film." As for being accepted as a gay role-model after the release of Pankh Maradona says, "Why not? If people of either sex find me attractive I'm fine by it as long as I remain happily heterosexual in real life."

"Only the person who wrote Laila Majnu should be upset with me" - Dibakar

Dibakar Banerjee Dibakar Banerjee won't be starting another film till next year. He needs to take the rest of the year off to get to know his new adoptive baby Ira. "Otherwise she'll never be able to accept me as anything but an alien in her life. At the moment she's 7 months old. I want to spend some months with her and become an integral part of her life." Movies can wait. "I won't be starting another film till next year. I need to be home, to let my daughter get used to my presence around the house." Reacting to the charge by short-filmmaker Abhay Kumar that the first segment of Dibakar's film Love Sex Aur Dokha is similar to Abhay's short film Udaan Dibakar says, "Of course there are similarities! My film and his have adopted the age-old traditional Laila-Majnu format where boy meets girl, they fall in love, elope and get killed by irate parents. If anyone should be upset with me it's the person who wrote Laila Majnu." Dibakar points out that so many Hindi films have borrowed the star-crossed love format. "Raj Kapoor's Bobby...Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak...there was even a film featuring Farooq Sheikh and Deepti Naval Ek Baar Chale Aao...Yeah I saw Abhay's film and it's certainly similar to mine." A refreshing change from the denials that filmmakers serve up when charged with similarities to another work. Adds Dibakar, "If you look at my other film Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, some shots were taken from the way Martin Scorsese shoots his scenes. It's the way we all function as filmmaker. There have to be sources of inspiration."

"I haven't credited Simple as 'Late' Simple Kapadia" - Kabir Sadanand

Kabir Sadanand Dimple Kapadia's deceased sister Simple who was doing her star-sister's costumes in Tum Milo Toh Sahi until she was too unwell, is credited in the film for her work. But not as a posthumous presence. "I haven't credited her as the 'Late' Simple Kapadia. Because to us who were among the last fortunate folks to have spent time with her, she never went away. Her laughter and her joie de vivre remains with us. Though Pooja Chabria took over Dimple's clothes after she was unwell, Simple would was still a part of the whole procedure," says director Kabir Sadanand emotionally. Kabir didn't allow any pictures to be taken when Simple would come to the sets. "I didn't want the world to see her on a wheelchair. Even though she was ill, she insisted on coming to the sets and spending time with us. When we'd ask about her health she would turn around and say, 'Who's ill around here?' Her spirit carried us forward to the end of the film." Director Kabir Sadanand who was making Tum Milo Toh Sahi right at the time when his leading lady Dimple Kapadia was facing the worst crisis of her life. Her sister Simple was dying. Says Kabir, "But not once did Dimple bring her grief to the sets. Not once did we get to feel the enormity of her suffering. Every day she was in and out of the hospital and on the sets on time ready to face the camera." Even when Simple was gone the show went on. "Dimple doesn't believe that the world needs to know about her suffering. She internalized all the pain that she felt about Simple's condition," says Kabir.

Subhash K. Jha speaks on Sadiyaan

Sadiyaan It is deliciously ironical that during the week that our tennis queen Sania Mirza announced she would marry in Pakistan, comes this film where the young desi pair threatens to get married and move to Pakistan. Life often imitates art. And art is often a close companion of kitsch and melodrama. Kitschy melodrama is attacked by purists. But there's something to be said about a good old-fashioned melodrama like Sadiyaan where the biological and foster mothers, played by Hema Malini and Rekha respectively, vie for a son's love and attention and outdo each other in the sacrificial arena. They don't make screen -moms like Rekha and Hema any more. Raj Kanwar induces great dignity into the tussle between the modern-day Devaki and Yashodhara. Yup, there's something to be said in favour of nostalgia. Just see how Hema Malini, Rekha and Rishi Kapoor light up the screen in this surprisingly-watchable-in-parts ode to fugitive parenthood. Cleverly veteran director Raj Kanwar who in the past has made some very successful melodramas, focuses on the older generation in the second-half so that the story of young love gets a strong back-projection. Sadiyaan has its heart in the right place even when it, the heart rests in callow place. The courtship between the two newcomers in the first-half lacks a virile force. The rituals of romance are rather routine. As a matter of fact the cynics can accuse the scriptwriters of investing too much heart into this tale about the pangs of Partition that tore India into two messy halves more than sixty years ago. Sadiyaan We've had some remarkable Hindi films on Partition ranging from the classic Garam Hawa to the extraordinary-in-its-own-rights Gadar Ek Prem Kahani. Sadiyaan is not quite in the same league. It isn't lacking in emotions .Nor does the narrative miss out on putting the right punctuation marks in every sequence. What prevents the film from taking wings is also the quality that lifts the film above the culture of prevalent puerility. Sadiyaan has that fast-fading quality called tehzeeb. To get to that core of genteel emotions one has to forego the fast-food pleasures of contemporary commercial cinema where any shot that lasts more than 5 seconds is considered distracting. Sadiyaan revels in lingering moments and interactive dialogues that speak of mythology in a semi-historical context. The main actors lead the narrative gracefully into a heart-warming conclusion. The dialogues by Javed Siddiqui convey a cutting edge touching long-forgotten chords and opening wounds of history's failings that never healed without getting involved in polemics. Anshul Chobey's camera sweeps over the idyllic innocence of Amritsar with a panoramic grace. Sadiyaan The debutant Luv Sinha conveys a rawness and innocence that go well with his character. His dialogue delivery and body language need fine-tuning. Time always takes care of the rough edges. That's what this film is about. Trust the strong stalwart cast to steel and steal Raj Kanwar's engaging screenplay. Rekha and Hema Malini as young Sinha's two screen moms are a study in contrast. Rekha is exuberant and restless and quite an antithesis to her husky mysterious characters. Hema is dignity and restrain personified. Her arrival after intermission signals the film's most watch able portion. As for Rishi Kapoor, has he ever let a film down? The narrative follows old-world conventions like comic relief (between an Indian and Pakistani domestic help) and a Mujra (performed spiritedly by Neetu Chandra) during the wedding. But it's the irony at the core of the plot that sweeps us over the glitches and hiccups. A Hindu mother decides to find her adoptive son's biological Muslim parents so he can marry the girl of his choice. Sadiyaan appeals at a very basic level. They don't make too many movies like these any more.
