AFP - Layered chiffon tops and silky hemlines met shiny leather boots on the catwalk of the Tokyo Fashion Show this week in a blend of old-world femininity and edgy city themes.

Before he was stealing scenes on The Office and traveling time in hot tubs, Craig Robinson was a middle school music teacher and last night he told Jimmy Kimmel about his sure-fire way of getting his students' attention. It involved insulting them. On The Tonight Show, Marriage Ref host Tom Papa described working under another funny authority figure, but it sounded a lot less amusing since he apparently incurs Jerry Seinfeld's wrath whenever jokes are bungled (a not infrequent occurrence on that show). Finally, The Roots were challenged to improvise a U2-style song about an audience member on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and it was so good that Steve Jobs has probably already purchased the rights to it. AP - "Heroes" star Hayden Panettiere and her boyfriend, world champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko, received a chilly reception Friday in the Japanese fishing village of Taiji, where they called for an end to its annual dolphin hunt.

Hudson's Borrowed: Kate Hudson is in final negotiations to star in the romantic comedy Something Borrowed with Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love), John Krasinski (The Office) and Colin Egglesfield (Melrose Place). She’ll play Darcy, Goodwin’s best friend, who is in for a surprise when said best friend gets involved with her fiance. Don’t fret, Kate: Ginnifer's just used to the multiple wives thing. [Variety]
Someones Join No One: Tracy Morgan and Juliette Binoche (whom we can't believe Hollywood hasn't put in the same film until now!) are in final negotiations to join the ensemble cop drama Son of No One. The film stars Channing Tatum, playing a young cop with an “old secret,” as well as Al Pacino, Ray Liotta and Katie Holmes. One of the two will take over Terrence Howard’s role as a friend of Tatum’s, while the other will play a reporter - we’ll leave it up to you to guess which is which. [HR]
Werewolves N The Hood: John Singleton will direct Abduction, a thriller starring Taylor Lautner as a young man who sees his baby picture on a missing persons website. Shooting on the film - which sounds like a Tiger Beat version of The Bourne Identity - will begin July in Pittsburgh. [Variety]
Indie Veterans Get Dirty: Dirty Girl, an indie comedy from first-time writer-director Abe Sylvia, has scored some big names to round out its cast: Milla Jovovich, William H. Macy, Mary Steenburgen, Dwight Yoakam and Tim McGraw. The film stars Juno Temple (Greenberg) as a “high school tramp” who skips town searching for “the father she never knew” with a closeted gay guy (newcomer Jeremy Dozier) who is avoiding military school. We hope the dad is played by Yoakam - because how great would it be to track down your dad after 18 years or whatever and find out he was Dwight Yoakam? [Variety]
WondLalust: Paramount is making a deal to option the rights to The Search For WondLa, the first in a new children’s book series by Tony DiTerlizzi, who wrote The Spiderwick Chronicles. The series is about a human orphan girl raised in a “hi-tech subterranean home” by a mother who “happens to be a robot.” The girl, whose name is Eva Nine, has to go on the run with her “robot mother, an oversized water beast and a tall blue creature” when her home is attacked. What child can’t relate to such a universal tale? [Deadline]
Do The Dewan: Jenna Dewan (Step Up) and Joe Hursley (Fast & Furious) will star in the indie comedy Balls to the Wall, about a guy (Hursley) who wants to give his girlfriend (Dewan) the wedding of her dreams, so he takes on a second job as an exotic dancer. Good move, Joe; Jenna does apparently have a thing for strippers. [HR]
Don Heads South: Don Johnson is in negotiations to star in the ABC comedy pilot Southern Discomfort, about a “tough, hard-core conservative Texan” (Johnson) whose life is radically shaken up when his adult children move back in. With Ed O'Neill on Modern Family, and William Shatner attached to the upcoming Shit My Dad Says, cranky old men comedies are clearly having their moment. [HR]
Back To Black: The Black Lips are two recording sessions in to their fifth studio album, which will be out by late summer or early fall. The album doesn’t yet have a name, but the Lips have starting playing one song on the road that should make the cut, called "Raw Meat." Yum! [Billboard]

After Sarah Palin’s eight-episode reality series, Sarah Palin’s Alaska (let’s hope that title gets jazzed up before the show hits the air), was officially announced earlier this week, the only question remaining was which Discovery Company network would get the great honor of airing the “docuseries.” The lucky winner announced today? David Paterson has no doubt been sitting pretty while the health care behemoth has monopolized the headlines and - more importantly - stolen away the attention of his BFFs at The New York Times. But the Times wasted no time getting right back to its favorite topic tonight now that the health care bill is behind us.
The paper is reporting that the governor allegedly helped to draft a statement last month that he hoped Sherr-una Booker would endorse, according to three unnamed Times sources. In this statement, Booker - who had accused Paterson aide David Johnson of assault - would have said she was not the victim of any physical harm and that the breakup was “unfriendly but not violent.”
The Times says Booker refused to sign the document after it was e-mailed to her by a mutual friend of Paterson and Booker, explaining she would not endorse a “lie.” Paterson was "disappointed" by Booker's refusal to sign the statement, according to the paper, though it is not clear exactly how much he knew at this point.
"It is unclear, however, if at the time he was told that she had characterized it as “a lie,” the people with knowledge of the administration’s handling of the episode said. It is also unclear if Mr. Paterson then knew all of the details of what Ms. Booker had told the police was a violent assault on Oct. 31 in the Bronx apartment she shared with Mr. Johnson."
Of course, Paterson’s conduct in the case is currently under criminal investigation; but frankly, he's probably more scared of the Times reporting staff at this point.

After a 16-month stalemate, government authorities and developer Larry A. Silverstein have reached an agreement on the construction of two new skyscrapers at the ground zero site, which together will cost up to $1.6 billion. The Port Authority will provide about $1 billion of the funding necessary for the first tower, a 64-story building set for completion in 2013. As for the second building, if Silverstein can raise $300 million and secure the necessary leases, he will then receive an additional $600 million from the state, city and Port Authority for that building. If he can’t scrounge up the money though, then he will construct a simpler five-story building on the site (also by 2013) and, erm, figure out how to build a tower there later.
In return for the government funding, Silverstein will have to share profits for the first building, should it be successful, with the city.
“Today’s agreement between my company and the Port Authority will accelerate the rebuilding of the World Trade Center,” Silverstein said in a statement. “This is great news for New York.”
Of course, not everyone thinks the generous funding for the two towers, which will primarily be used for office space, is such "great news."
“I’m glad the stalemate appears to be over, but I’m not convinced that this is the best deal for the city,” said Jonathan Bowles, director of the nonpartisan research firm Center for an Urban Future. “It’s far from clear to me that public money should be used to build two office towers. If the market does not support these buildings, why should government step in?”
The parties involved will have 120 days to negotiate the details of the deal.

AP - It was the summer of 1946 when a young and war-fatigued J.D. Salinger reached out to another writer whose career had also been shaped by war, a writer he had arranged to meet while both had been in Europe.

“It is the end of an era,” Carolina Herrera, a close friend of Patrick McCarthy's, told the Times of his departure from WWD and W. McCarthy, editorial director of both publications, will stay on through the end of the year, but doesn't know what he'll do after that. Calvin Klein also sang his praises:
“There were times when I got bad reviews in Women’s Wear Daily,” Calvin Klein recalled in an interview this week, “but at least I always felt their criticism was written fairly, because that’s what Patrick McCarthy did.”
In a 1997 New York profile, McCarthy revealed his special way of dealing with the outsize personalities the industry is famous for. "Bite the hand that feeds you," he said.
“Never stop biting it. And you know what? It will feed you more.”
Once, he decided to call out Sarah Jessica Parker in WWD for attending so many fashion shows. She called to complain and he printed her response.
Meanwhile, Stefano Tonchi is preparing to start at W April 12. He met with the staff yesterday, made a few jokes, and expressed his admiration for McCarthy as well. A source described him as "very charming." Others say he revealed plans to boost W's online presence, and that his focus first and foremost will be the editorial content. You know, the stories it's so easy to forget are in so many fashion magazines. He also plans to meet with each staff member individually.

Investment banker John Utendahl got a new job as the vice-chairman of Deutsche Bank, which sent out an effusive press release announcing their new hire. Among the usual stiff hosannas from people at the firm (“John is a trailblazing entrepreneur who has earned the trust of countless clients across corporate America," said the Deutsche Bank CEO), the release contains a quote from a client of Utendahl's — Keith Sherin, the CFO of General Electric.
It's pretty mushy:
"John has an incredible network of relationships with key institutions and clients, and his ability to systematically develop business and bring banking and investment solutions to these institutions through these contacts is truly impressive," said Keith Sherin, CFO and Vice Chairman of General Electric. "His depth of financial product experience across many asset classes has led to GE successfully investing with John. We have used his products and services for many years and we look forward to continuing that association going forward."
The Street points out that it's highly weird for a client to be quoted in a press release, especially one who is not a client of the firm:
Deutsche Bank appears to be saying: "'Hey folks, you can expect us to start doing lots of business with General Electric"
But the real question is, what's Utendahl's girlfriend, Tyra Banks, going to say? One thing is for certain, we wouldn't want to be on Sherin's side of those expressive eyes.

Whatever you did for lunch on Tuesday, if you weren't at the Mercer Hotel, you did the wrong thing. Karl Lagerfeld was spotted there yesterday morning. As André Leon Talley later blogged, he was the Kaiser's dining companion the day prior:
Karl Lagerfeld arrived promptly for lunch Tuesday at the Mercer lounge for his usual carpaccio, smoked salmon, and red snapper with grilled vegetables. I hadn’t been privy to Lagerfeld’s witty conversation in two years. Impeccably dressed, he wore skintight Chanel black jeans (that at first glance look like intricate French lace), dark shirt and tie from Hilditch & Key, and an antique set of Suzanne Belperron sapphire and calcédoine pins worn as tie bars.
His attention to detail brings a tear to the eye. It's what makes his ANTM judging as spectacular as his blogging!
Talley confirms Karl is in town to shoot the fall 2010 Chanel campaign. But what else would he be doing running around downtown with a camera and a model dressed in furry raver boots? In other news, Karl plans to show his cruise collection in St. Tropez in May. Talley also asked about Chanel's couture clients:
There are still the Americans — Jayne Wrightsman, Marie-Josée Kravis — who have Chanel suits delivered in those great white matte Chanel boxes, but the new clients are women who might order 26 couture looks in half an hour. No names, but they come from the Middle East.
Crap, that is a lot of money. Like, they could probably save Haiti.

The New York Post reports that Emanuel Ungaro shuttered its Madison Avenue boutique in an effort to stop bleeding money. Apparently the label racked up reported debts of $25 million in 2004 when it was owned by Salvatore Ferragamo. Silicon Valley venture capitalist Asim Abdullah bought the label in 2005, but it's been unable to financially recover. An investment group reportedly approached Abdullah about buying the label, but a source said "all bets are off" following Lohan's runway debut in October, which the Post reminds us "included pasties and microskirts that bared models' buttocks."
Lohan confirmed a few weeks ago that she was no longer working for the label. But according to the Post, she wasn't a great expense to it anyway: Sources claim the label paid her in clothes instead of cash. Problems reportedly arose when Abdullah, a software engineer, decided he wanted a younger client base for the label and brought on Lohan, forcing out designer and editor darling Esteban Cortazar.
Sources tell the Post that the Plaza is trying to get people to rent spaces in its underground mall by telling them Ungaro is moving in. But it's hard to see how leasing a space in the Plaza would help Ungaro, since fewer people would shop there than ever. They may as well open up in the South Pole.

Watching these tabloid celebs toil at their fake jobs, without addressing the fact that they're, you know, really famous and rich, felt increasingly inane. Or: "A lot of these kids have found themselves and have certainly embarked on different careers and different paths," as creator Adam DiVello puts it in EW.
Even so, we'll actually miss watching as Audrina tries to rid herself of the Justin lovebug, Spencer lies about becoming a better person, and the She-Pratt meddles in everyone's life. So we'll end this post with a plea to those who've given up on the show: Please watch this final season with us! (We'll be recapping our way through, as usual.) We don't want to go it alone. After the final episode we can raise a glass together, toast to the memories, and then be thrilled to get the hell out of Dodge.
