"I am a terrible businessman and a very good producer" - Arshad Warsi

Arshad Warsi Yet another actor has joined the bandwagon of making films. Arshad Warsi, after being a part of the industry for close to a decade and a half, now has his first ever production - Hum Tum Aur Ghost - ready to hit the screens in a few hours from now. As the anxious producer-actor waits to gauge audience's reaction to his much romantic comedy with an element of 'ghost' thrown in, Arshad also maintains that 'for someone like him' in the film, Hum Tum Aur Ghost is quite expensive! In a free wheeling chat with Joginder Tuteja, Arshad talks about the making of the film, his differences with director Kabeer Kaushik and the no-compromise stance that he adopted when it came to the film's cost. So after the success of Ishqiya, has Arshad also become a '5 crore ka hero'? [Laughs] I hope so. Woh alag baat hai ki koyi de nahi raha hai! On a serious note though, I never ask for an amount like that. Having said that, as per insiders and trade calculations, I do deserve this amount. Let's see, perhaps success of Hum Tum Aur Ghost would further firm up these calculations. Perhaps someone else in my place may not have spent so much but then the requirement of the film was that we did not hold back on expenses In fact for a first ever film of a newly turned producer; Hum Tum Aur Ghost does appear to be an expensive film. Yeah, for someone like me in the film, it is actually quite expensive (smiles). Still, I do feel that there is a minimum amount that should be spent on the making of a film. I have done that and a little more in fact. All said and done, my actors are very happy. They are very proud of the film. See, the fact is that I don't cut cost and when people would watch the film, they would understand that we have actually spent good money. Perhaps someone else in my place may not have spent so much but then the requirement of the film was that we did not hold back on expenses. (Laughs) This is why I keep telling everyone that I am a terrible businessman and a very good producer. Arshad Warsi Well, the promos do have a certain quality feel to them. I knew that they would fetch a very good response the moment final edit was ready. There were two stages in which audience reaction had to be gauged. Once when the song promos were out and two when the talkie portions started playing. When you air the songs, audience basically get an idea on how much you have spent on the film. In addition, it's the newness and the freshness factor that is conveyed. However, the tougher part is to actually trigger an enhanced curiosity level in the audience; they should be interested enough to step into theatres and that can be made possible only if your talkie promos are cut well. Thankfully, the response has been very positive there and people are commenting that Hum Tum Aur Ghost is appearing as a 'mast' film. Still Arshad, don't you feel that the promotion could have been a little more aggressive and on the face? See, promos and publicity material is not in my hand; it is in the control of Studio 18. The way they have planned it all, they feel it is proper and if they feel it is proper then I have to be okay with that. My liking or not liking the way film is pitched is not in my hands. For my next film though, I would like that to be in my hands. I do feel though that the promotion could have been a little more aggressive. I do feel though that the promotion could have been a little more aggressive It was heard that you and director Kabir Kaushik differed on a few points during the making of the film. Did that lead to a lot of heartburn as well due to so much exchange of ideas and opinions? Heartburn would be too harsh a word though the fact is that I couldn't let go if something was not going as per my vision. If anything like this happened then I used to explain to Kabeer the feeling of the film again. See the thing is that Kabeer ki sensibility aur hamaari film ki sensibility mein kaafi difference hain. He has made films like Seher and Chamku while Hum Tum Aur Ghost is in a When Harry Met Sally zone. Inn dono genres mein connection bahaut door ka hai! Arshad Warsi So do you have any regrets? Well, I took Kabeer for Hum Tum Aur Ghost because this script has some very dramatic scenes. There are some very delicate relationships in the film and people who have seen the film do comment that how could we actually think about these well crafted scenes. Ours is the kind of film which is very delicate and had to be shot well. If not, then that could have led to a disastrous situation. Now the matter of the fact is, and let me put this on record, that Kabeer is very good at handling such delicate scenes. On the other hand when it came to humour, there were Boman and me sitting there to ensure that things fell well in place. We wanted romance to be real and humour to be of the kind which is not conventional. I think that people would be able to see it the way I had envisioned it all. I took Kabeer for Hum Tum Aur Ghost because this script has some very dramatic scenes While executing this vision of yours, weren't you ever worried that for a film with a title like Hum Tum Aur Ghost, audience may be left confused if it is a complete family entertainer or a horror film? This is where the designing of posters and the font of your film's title comes into picture. This is something which is really required for effective marketing thing. Just this first look pretty much tells you what the film is all about. If only a different font would have been used, the same film could have looked liked a horror tale. However, I am positive that no one is thinking that this is a horror film because in all the interviews I have given and the press conferences that I have attended, only 2%-3% have thought that Hum Tum Aur Ghost could be a scary film. Arrey yaar, we have also got a U certificate for the film so doesn't it just say it all? Moreover, my image is such that people know yeh horror movie nahi banaega!

Salman Khan to star in Ready remake directed by Anees Bazmee

Salman Khan, Anees Bazmee Bollywood seems to be back to its remake trend, the current one being remaking south Indian superhits in Hindi. Anees Bazmee is doing just that with the south hit film Ready. The original Telugu film that starred Genelia and Ram will be now remade with Salman in the lead. Speaking to Anees we learn, "Yes. I am doing the remake of the south film Ready, and have also confirmed Salman Khan to play the male lead in it. However, as for the leading ladies, I cannot speak about it now, as it's really too early and we haven't decided on it as yet." Further he tells us, "As for the film itself, there is a long way to go as we still have to complete the scripting process since we want to retain some of the original while changing the rest to suit the Bollywood audience and hence the title as well is still awaiting to be finalized." What about the rest of the cast of the film? "In terms of other cast members again I would say wait a little longer and all shall be revealed," signs off Bazmee. Ready remake will be produced by T-Series.

In fact, we had confirmed Sonam and Akshay way back, but then, there is this really important and pivotal role which needed to be filled. And that's when we decided to have Bobby Deol play the said part." When quizzed for more details about Bobby's part in the film, Anees firmly states, "Right now, it's really early to go about talking about the character of any of the actors in the film. Sajid Khan dedicates Housefull to 7 directors who inspired him

Sajid Khan Sajid Khan is dedicating his second directorial venture Housefull to the seven filmmakers who have inspired him the most. Says the excited director, "It came to me in a flash this week that there are many directors to whom I owe my career as a filmmaker. I short listed the seven directors who have made the maximum impact on me. And I'll be putting in a credit card thanking them in Housefull." The lucky 7 are Manmohan Desai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, K. Raghvendra Rao, K Bappaiah, Narendra Bedi, Prakash Mehra and Blake Edwards. Says the enthusiastic director, "These are the directors who have most inspired me, provoked me into becoming a movie director. I love masala movies. And these directors made the films I can never get tired of watching. I had dedicated my first film Heyy Babyy to all the girls who agreed to make guest appearances in the title song." Sajid is aware some names in his list of 7 would surprise people. "But I feel someone like Narendra Bedi who made Jawani Diwani and Adalat shaped our commercial cinema. Both me and my sister Farah are hardcore commercial directors." Though Farah has started directing her film Tees Maar Khan, Sajid is keeping as far away as possible from his sister's project. "I haven't read her script. She hasn't read mine. Though we'd give our lives for one another, we're two different individuals. She is extroverted. I am more into myself. I like to spend my evenings alone at home watching films every evening." Sajid's greatest joy these days is exchanging Bollywood trivia with Boman Irani. "Boman and Viveck Vaswani are the most knowledgeable movie people I know. Add me to the list. If Boman was not an actor I'd still be friends with him just to share movie info with him."

"Success of HTAG would be a redemption for Arshad and Me" - Dia Mirza

Dia Mirza Dia Mirza is super confident about the prospects of her latest release Hum Tum Aur Ghost. Someone who is not known for making tall claims before the release of any and every film of hers, Dia's confidence (and hopes) comes with a reason. After all it would be four long years since the release of Alag (2006) that Dia would be seen as a solo lead and that too in a film which belongs to rom-com genre. Though she has worked in films like Acid Factory, Kurbaan, Kisaan, Jai Veeru, Krazzy 4, Cash, Shoot Out At Lokhandwala, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd and Lage Raho Munnabhai in the interim, she was either one amongst half a dozen other characters in the film or was being seen in a special/guest appearance. However, Hum Tum Aur Ghost is a film which could well be a major calling for Dia and bring her the kind of acclaim, recognition and success that she pretty much deserves right from the early days of Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and Tumko Na Bhool Payenge. In a candid conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Dia Mirza talks about the reasons for her confidence in Hum Tum Aur Ghost and how the success of the film would be not just a professional but also personal achievement for both Arshad and herself. I sincerely feel that it is me who has benefited out of working in Hum Tum Aur Ghost In your near decade long career spanning three dozen odd films, there have been countless occasions where you have stepped into a project as a friend. Is Hum Tum Aur Ghost also one such film where your friendship with Arshad resulted in you signing the film? On the contrary I sincerely feel that it is me who has benefited out of working in Hum Tum Aur Ghost. I think this is one of the remote instances where I have felt that as an actor, I have laid my hands on a great opportunity. (Laughs) Of course when it comes to remuneration, Arshad has the right to say that 'thoda kam kar do' and I can do that as well. However, beyond that working in this film has been an honest option. What really made you so excited about the film? Because Arshad has written a great story. Also, he backed it up with an apt technical team. Whether it is music, cinematography, set design, costumes, and the works, there was no compromise whatsoever. I knew from the beginning that it would be a sound film for sure. I had this confidence that even if the end product would turn out to be half of what was put on paper, it would be great. Thankfully Hum Tum Aur Ghost has done beyond that, hence turning out to be a win-win situation for all of us. You have been heard stating that the character of 'Gehna' that you play in the film is quite heart warming. How do you bring that aspect of a character on screen? (Says promptly) By being what I am in real life. I believe that I have this inherent trait of being really warm and genuine to people and this is something that I have brought into this film as well. I guess this is a gift and I really acknowledge and cherish it. Moreover, I think that I am being equally loved as well, as I realize after doing smaller parts in bigger films and continuing to get all the love. This is something that assures me of all the warmth that I have got over the years. Arshad's writing in the film has made sure that Gehna is quite endearing And this is the warmth that spills on screen as well? Exactly. My contribution to Hum Tum Aur Ghost has been enhanced due to this very facet of my personality. Arshad's writing in the film has made sure that Gehna is quite endearing. So even when she is fighting, people love her. The idea was to make Gehna as lovable as possible and that reflects on screen. Dia Mirza The saying is that a good film always works. However, when there is such huge competition like six movies in a single week and IPL also underway, doesn't it become too big a risk? I have a belief and I will put it very simply - As an audience, there have been so many occasions when I have seen the promo of a film and decided there and then that whether I would want to see it or not. After that, whatever be the kind of marketing or promotion kick that film may see, it very seldom changes my opinion. I am a big believer in the saying that the first impression is the last impression. Now given the kind of response that the first look and promo of Hum Tum Aur Ghost got, I know for sure that there is a set of audience out there who have made up their mind to watch the film. Post that, destiny would come into play. Well, but box office is a scary place after all... Hum Tum Aur Ghost may not get an earth shattering opening but I am also sure that it would be respectable for sure. It is a safe film and already in a very positive zone. People want to go and watch a warm movie. These are the times when there is a dearth of happy and refreshing films and Hum Tum Aur Ghost fills in that space. Yes, I know that there are other films also releasing this Friday. One of them is Well Done Abba which has my dear friend Boman (Irani) as the central protagonist. I would really want it do well and meanwhile also hope and pray that Hum Tum Aur Ghost also turns out to be good. Honestly, I can't wait for the film to become a success because then it would be redemption for Arshad and me. It would prove yet again that if you have a good content, you can comfortably strike big and enjoy a home run.

Big B gets Lifetime Achievement Award at 4th Asian Awards ceremony

Amitabh Bachchan There's nothing that can rightly be called as a well deserved recognition for one who dedicated his life for cinema, to cinema and with cinema. But a Lifetime Achievement Award does come close to doing just that. The legendary Amitabh Bachchan was recently awarded yet another Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th Asian Awards ceremony in Hong Kong. Speaking about the same on his blog, Bachchan says, "It just got over! The pride and passion and honour of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 4th Asian Awards ceremony here at the Exhibition centre in Hong Kong." He continues, "To be honest, I had never expected it to be the way it was - the organization, the protocol, the discipline and the efficiency, all in place and all done with great aplomb and grandeur. There is nothing quite as satisfying as a system that works. And to come across a dictum on the city of my present habitat that proclaims 'Hong Kong - the city that works!' is no off the cuff floozy remark. Tonight it demonstrated that it actually lives up to its reputation. Thank you Hong Kong, thank you Asian Film Awards for the respect and honour that you bestowed upon me, an honour that I shall cherish and remember fondly always." This adds yet another feather to Big B's hat.

"Getting Miss Sri Lanka crown involved hard work" - Jacqueline Fernandez

Jacqueline Fernandez Ex Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez has pretty much made India as her home. Arriving in the country three years back to try her luck in Bollywood, Jackie (as she is fondly called) bagged Aladin and Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai. As she gets ready to involve herself neck deep into the promotion of this romantic comedy where she plays a beautiful alien and has Riteish Deshmukh opposite her, Jackie admits that her struggle is nothing when compared to that of her dad who worked relentlessly for 20 years before turning as successful as he is today. "My dad is his own boss and this is what makes me so happy today. He achieved what he wanted to be and that's inspiring enough for me to keep working hard in the industry. When I look at where he is today, I feel so proud of him. It took him a long 20 years to get to a position from where he can call the shots and earn respect", says Jackie who is the daughter of a Sri Lankan dad and a Malaysian mother. Jackie's dad had his own event management company which has handled some of the biggest concerts in the recent times. However, the fact is that he had actually started on a humble note as a DJ many years ago. "My family has grown up on music, rock-n-roll and parties", Jackie gets nostalgic here, "For my dad, being DJ was just a hobby to begin with. Later when he started getting popular, he got invited for parties, shows and weddings as well. Eventually he started getting so busy that managing it with a day job became increasingly tough for him." This was the time period when Jackie saw him lesser and lesser with every passing month. "I don't even remember him eating", Jackie gets emotional here, "He would come really late in the night, sometimes at even 3 AM. He used to take a quick nap and was gone again at 6 PM. He was working hard for our family and was maintaining such hectic schedule for years at stretch. Eventually he took to entertainment profession full time." No wonder, Jackie feels that in comparison, she didn't have to go through such gruelling journey. "Yes, getting Miss Sri Lanka crown was hard work but ever since then, it hasn't been as tough as my dad's journey", Jackie says fondly here, "He is probably the hardest working man I have ever known and it would be tough to emulate his perseverance and attitude." She is also happy that her parents never drew any boundaries for her, as far as her personal and professional life was concerned. "I had to never ask for any kind of permission from my parents", says Jackie, "Yes, like any concerned parents they would advise me. However, they never held me back on any decisions that I took. They have always completely trusted me." Jackie would soon be seen in Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai which has debutant director Milap Zaveri at the helm of affairs. She plays the role of an alien who comes from Venus to Earth in search of love. With music by Sajid-Wajid and lyrics by Sameer, this co-production of Mukesh Talreja and Nikhil Advani releases all over on 9th April.

Bollywood hits back this IPL

The challenge Bollywood is all set to hit back. And how! A couple of years back when Season One of Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket competition kick started, not many were prepared for its might. In fact the only film which succeeded in a major way despite the onslaught of the cricket matches was Emraan Hashmi starrer Jannat. Yes, the film was well made but its success was also primarily due to the fact that this film from the house of Bhatts dealt with match fixing and betting, something which was quite contemporary at its best. However, Bollywood pretty much realised that with matches beginning from 4 PM in the evening and wrapping up around 11 PM in the night, it was futile to bring any new releases in theatres while the tournament was on. This is the reason why in 2009 there were no biggies announced in the duration was IPL was scheduled. It was a different matter that this time period also saw the stand off between producers and multiplexes which led to a total draught of movies in theatres. However, it was quite clear that even without the strike, no filmmaker with crores riding on his project would have dared to bring it up in theatres. Comments an insider, "Yes there was this waiting period but then it only led to double trouble. First and foremost there was no software made available to theatres which means that Bollywood wheels stopped moving for a couple of months, hence bringing the incoming of any revenue whatsoever to a complete halt. It was a standoff of the worst kind as let aside A grade projects, even B grade films opted to wait in the wings. Secondly, soon after the closure of IPL (and subsequently the producers' strike), there was an avalanche of film release." A bad phase It was the survival of the fittest (and the biggest) due to which road was cleared first for biggies like New York, Kambakkht Ishq, Luck, Love Aaj Kal, Kaminey, Life Partner from June till August. This was followed by a total break down of machinery as an entire backlog of smaller and medium budget films, which would have otherwise released during the period of stand off, started jostling for space. "It was a really bad phase", continues the insider, "Things took a turn for the worse as regardless of the anticipated (poor) fate of their products, filmmakers started releasing their films in piles. It wasn't a matter of two, three or four films releasing in a single week. The average stood at half a dozen films a week for number of weeks in succession and it wasn't a surprise to even the makers that not many out of them managed to survive even beyond the first weekend. Flops and disasters were the order of the day and it took a Wanted to bring industry out of a slump." However, the damage had been done, quite a few filmmakers had turned broke, industry (which had already lost hundreds of crores due to IPL and strike) lost a lot more over the three months gone by, many actors came back home with their dreams shattered and Bollywood in general struggled to survive from its darkest phase of the current decade. The fight back This is the reason why things seem to be taking a turn for the better this year with Season 3 of IPL already on. Bollywood has smartened up and it is not allowing itself to be exhumed in the manner of the year gone by. It is making best use of the six weeks made available for itself before IPL concludes and biggies start making the round of theatres once again. However, smaller and medium budget films aren't willing to be steamrolled later in the day when audience would have a choice to pick between the top stars/banners and them. So let's have a dekko at how Bollywood release calendar looks as of now. With the fickle nature of the industry, this could pretty much go through a modification in weeks to come but as of now, most of the films mentioned are confirmed for arrival on the said date, hence summing up to be an astonishing 30 odd releases in March and April! March While the month of March began with the release of Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?, Road, Movie, Rokkkk & Thanks Maa, the others that followed were Right Yaaa Wrong, Hide & Seek, Na Ghar Ke Na Ghat Ke, Do Dilon Ke Khel Mein, Swaha & Trump Card. Recent releases also included Shaapit, Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Lahore and Idiot Box. However, there hasn't been much respite, as far as release calendar is concerned with weeks to follow being quite jammed packed as well, next week seeing half a dozen releases - Hum Tum Aur Ghost, Well Done Abba, Mittal V/s Mittal, Prem Kaa Game, The Great Indian Butterfly and It's a Man's World. April With a stuffed March out of way, one would have expected that April would be lighter due to IPL getting into a further exciting stage. Well, the rush is lesser here but still seeing larger number of film releases than a regular month. 2nd April would mark the arrival of Sadiyaan, Tum Milo Toh Sahi and Pankh. The week to follow becomes even more challenging with Prince, Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, Apartment and Maalik Ek fighting it out. Says Milap Zaveri, the young man who makes his debut as a director with Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai, "I am confident of my film because it is the first of its kind love story between a boy from Earth (Riteish) and a girl from Venus (Jacqueline). There is loads of comedy, music and romance! Also 9th April is lucky for Riteish and me as our first huge hit Masti (which was written by Milap) had released on 9th April in 2004." Tanushree Dutta, who is the leading lady in Apartment, is also extremely confident. "If a film is good then audience will certainly go to watch it in theatres. I am very positive about my film. In any case cricket and movies are two different things. Yes, in the past there have been instances when films haven't released during the cricket season but then that could be because they were not supposed to be released then. Those who love movies will go for them regardless of cricket or any other event." This is the reason why the makers of Phoonk 2, Paathshaala and Muskurake Dekh Zara aren't overtly worried about arriving on 16th April. The week to follow though just has a single release, Bird Idol, which is an animation flick. However, once IPL is through, Bollywood is all set for a big weekend ahead with Housefull releasing on 30th April. Hope No wonder, trade is hopeful this time around. Says a trade follower, "Amongst three, four or five releases which are hitting the screens every week, there is at least one notable release which is expected to take in moolah. Now this is a far better situation than the one we evidenced last year when films of the likes of Meri Padosan, Detective Naani or Team - The Force were rejected at the title stage itself! Of course there are multiple releases all through the IPL as well which means it would be the survival of the fittest. Still, at least films are giving each other a chance."

Deepika - Imran bonding big-time on sets of Break Ke Baad

Deepika Padukone, Imran Khan Deepika Padukone who's in Delhi to shoot for Danish Aslam's Break Ke Baad was hit by a strong current of deja vu. Just a year ago she was in Delhi shooting for Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal. Even there her co-star Saif Ali Khan had his lady-love Kareena Kapoor along, so that Deepika had voluntarily kept to herself. "Not this time!" reports a source from Delhi. "Imran and Avantika have made Deepika feel most welcome and a part of their circle. In fact Deepika is completely at home hanging around with Imran and Avantika." A private person by nature and known to stay aloof Deepika has for the first time become so gregarious during shooting. Says the source, "During the shooting of Love Aaj Kal, Deepika barely exchanged anything beyond a hello with her co-star Saif in London and Delhi. Even with Neil Nitin Mukesh whom she just shot with Deepika was polite. But with Imran, Deepika is at her warmest, thanks to Avantika who has gone out of her way to make Deepika comfortable." "You're taller than me," was Deepika's first reaction when they started shooting together. Imran Khan and his fiance Avantika landed in Delhi a day before Deepika. Says producer Kunal Kohli, "Deepika and Imran shot in and around Delhi's streets from Wednesday. Everywhere they were greeted by mobs. Avantika has been a big support for Deepika.
