A large number of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi's evergreen melodies from the 1950s will be used in the Bollywood-inspired play 'Kingdom Of Dreams' featuring Vivek Oberoi, Isha Sharwani and Gauhar Khan. It will be staged in May at the newly constructed theatre in Gurgaon near Delhi.
Informs Javed Akhtar, "The first-half will have 11 evergreen melodies. The second-half will have 8-9 songs. We're still locking in on the final songs. There's dispute about some of the songs to be included."
Javed has been on stage before. "I had seen a lot of theatre; I've written Kaifi Aur Main. But that is not pure theatre. And besides I've hardly used my own words in Kaifi Aur Main. I've either taken excerpts from Shaukat Azmi's book or interviews on video. 'Kingdom Of Dreams' is unlike anything done on stage in India. The kind of facilities I was provided was mind-numbing. I've seen the theatre in Gurgaon. India has never seen anything like this. There will be horses and elephants running on and off stage."
In the meanwhile, Vivek left for Delhi on Friday for a month-long rehearsal with his two leading ladies Isha Sharwani and Gauhar Khan who play the princess and the gypsy fighting for Oberoi's attentions. Considering the fireworks that Gauhar generated with Shazahn Padamsee in Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year, there's bound to be a lot of behind-the-curtains excitement between Gauhar and Isha.
Says Vivek, "I guess I'm a very lucky guy. I got to woo three ladies in my new film Prince and now these two ladies in my play. 'Kingdom Of Dreams' is unlike anything we've seen in this country."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Mar 2010 | 5:09 am Jealous Lohan fights with clubber over male friend

Source: Entertainment - Google News | 23 Mar 2010 | 3:45 am Dibakar Banerjee to team up with Abhay Deol again
After the uproarious welcome given by critics to Love Sex Aur Dhokha, its director Dibakar Banerjee is teaming up with his Oye Lucky Lucky Oye hero Abhay Deol all over again, this time for a political thriller.
Says Dibakar, "It is a political thriller set in a state where a new government has been formed. It will again be in a new cinematic language. But it will be in the conventional format, not the digital format used in LSD. It's written by me and Urmi Juvekar who was my creative producer on LSD. She's one of the most politically savvy writers I know."
The political thriller will be set in an imaginary state. Says Dibakar, "The state has just formed after clamoring for statehood for a long time and now poised to get big economic sanctions. Then a political assassination happens."
Dibakar has decided to cast Abhay Deol in the political thriller. "Yes I want Abhay in the political thriller. But now because he has started his own production, we've to work out his dates."
About LSD Dibakar says, "I never expected so much praise. It's overwhelming. We thought some would get the point. And that would be enough."
But Dibakar regrets not fighting the censor board over its decision to remove all references to the caste factor in the first story of LSD. "I regret that. It completely diluted the story. We had no time to contest their decision. And also they were letting so much of the rest go unscathed. They explained to me that anything could happen if there were caste references in the love story. Mobs would burn a scooter, damage a theatre."
Now Dibakar hopes to see LSD become financially feasible, so he could have the freedom to make the films he wants to. "Ekta Kapoor has marketed LSD like a dream. It couldn't have been any better."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Mar 2010 | 3:29 am Yuvarani denies links with NithyanandaTamil actress Yuvarani has denied the allegations about her involvement in a sex tape with Swami Nithyananda. Vivek Oberoi is pinning his hopes on PRINCE. It's a crucial release for just everyone associated with this big-budget film. It's a solo hero film and the general perception is, only Aamir, SRK, Akshay and Hrithik can pull off a solo hero fare. It's a crucial release for debutante director Kookie Gulati. His career depends on how this film fares. It's an acid test for producer Kumar Taurani, who has invested a really big figure [40 cr., is it?] on this film.
Actually, people are wondering, would Vivek be able to pull off this 40 cr. gamble? "Yes, it's a gamble. But I have full faith in Kumar-ji [Taurani] and Kookie's abilities. They have made a fantastic film and I see no reason why this film wouldn't be lapped up in a big way. It's a paisa vasool entertainer, in my opinion," Vivek says.
Not many are aware, Vivek underwent a 6-month training in stunts to get it right on the screen. "Let me assure you, you haven't seen something like this before. I didn't want a stuntman to carry out those stunts. I wanted to do those myself, hence I decided to undergo the training for several months before we commenced filming. But, let me add, it's not an 'action fare', it's an entertainer with loads of thrills, interesting twists and turns and great music," Vivek clarifies.
There's talk that the plotline is a mix of THE BOURNE SUPREMACY and GHAJINI. Vivek smiles, "It's not. There's no similarity with THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, nor is there anything remotely similar to GHAJINI. It's a novel thriller that doesn't borrow from any film, past or present. It's one of those films that we enjoyed watching in the 1970s and 1980s. It has that feel," Vivek adds.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Mar 2010 | 1:09 am "I am open to challenging roles" - Sunny Deol
Sunny Deol has is ready to embrace the changing scenario. Okay, let me explain. The actor, who has maintained a low profile all this while, has decided to turn aggressive⦠off screen, of course. More market-friendly and more media-friendly too. "Times have changed. It's important that the world knows what kind of work you do. It's all about making the right noise," Sunny confides.
He's shooting non-stop with dad Dharmendra and bro Bobby for Sameer Karnik's YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA in Punjab. "Gone are the days when people used to let the product do the talking. Earlier, in the 1970s and 1980s, my father and several of his contemporaries had multiple releases each year and most of them hit the bull's eye, without anyone devoting 20 days for promotional activities. Yet, those films drew audiences in hordes," Sunny reminisces.
So why has he, all of a sudden, decided to follow Aamir, SRK and Akshay's footsteps? "The initial weekend business plays a crucial part today. You need to work hard and make people aware of your film. Marketing and promotion have become all-important these days," Sunny states.
The actor has also decided to re-invent himself. A lot of people feel that the actor started repeating himself in film after film, which made a dent in the box-office earnings of his films. "That's true! But I am open to working in movies that have something different to say. The viewers aren't keen to watch the same stuff, which is why you find a spurt in storytellers keen on narrating fresh stories. I am open to challenging roles," Sunny emphasises.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 23 Mar 2010 | 1:06 am Shahid Kapoor disturbs Badmaash Company shooting - Oneindia

It's really hard to get back out when you've got under the skin of the character. But on meeting Arshad Warsi you'd not expect that. He leaves his character inside his vanity van when he talks about it. Outside, he is a much relaxed and a calm guy, someone who doesn't take his work seriously. On the flip side, you wouldn't even know how serious he is. "Would you like some biryani or sandwich?" Arshad asks me kindly. Biryani with Warsi? You betcha. I watch him eat silently for a few moments, one occasionally offering each other appreciative smiles from our respective seats. It's 3pm at the actors new and an almost furnished Andheri office. His next film Hum Tum Aur Ghost has him playing the lead man who can see dead people. What's more, he has also turned producer with this film. It's a film that only a man with a spring in his step, hope in his heart and some biryani on his plate could carry off. Arshad Warsi has all of those things and more. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent met the actor and found - good guys, bad guys, confused guys - when Arshad Warsi takes a role (as an actor and a producer and soon to be a director) he takes it seriously.
And didn't you think of any other ghost than Boman?
Apart from Boman being a bully, sweet, nice, cute chap, what he brings on the table is dignity. I like that about it. Whichever movie he is a part of, he makes it look classy. That's very important. But I also had an angel in my first draft. The film back then was titled 'I believe in Angels'. I wanted Nasseruddin Shah to play the angel. It was pretty much a special appearance. I was very clear that if Naseer would not act in the film, I'll take the character out of my film and that's how the Ghost was born. Welcome Boman!
Can we now talk to Arshad the businessman?
Don't even try to. He is very bad. He sucks. Yes, I have turned producer and this is my first production. I have treated Hum Tum Aur Ghost as my baby. I have nurtured it to the fullest. Very honestly, I am really bad when it comes to production. I am good in writing, acting, etc. I can't get into this number game. I have invested a lot in this film. There was 'no worries' and 'ok, get that', etc on the sets. There was always a 'yes' for an answer and that I need to change if I want to be a good producer. But Arshad the person doesn't need to change, Arshad the producer needs to learn. I've given too much love to my cast and crew and I made sure that everyone got everything on and off the sets.
Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 22 Mar 2010 | 9:13 am After Mallika Sherawat, it's Jacqueline's turn to wear lingerie over clothes
In her rather eventful but now almost extinct film career, Mallika Sherawat has indulged in quite a few on-screen acts that have resulted in raised eyebrows. One such act was in Ugly Aur Pagli where she had worn a two piece lingerie. So what was really shocking about this? After all she had done this in quite a few of her earlier movies as well. Well, the difference here was she had worn the lingerie 'over' and not 'under' her clothing! A rather funny (though short) scene, it wasn't much talked about since Ugly Aur Pagli tanked at the box office.
Circa 2010 and one can be rest assured that a similar act would be much talked about in weeks to come. Reason being that now it's the turn of Jacqueline Fernandez a.k.a Jackie, an entirely different personality as far as on-screen image is concerned, to be doing something similar for a film of hers. She has done that for Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai and rest assured, the results are out and out funny without even faintly touching upon the lines of vulgarity or even sensuality.
"This happens during the title song 'Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai' where Jackie goes for a shopping binge along with Riteish Deshmukh and his buddy Vishal Malhotra. Since she is an alien from Venus, Jackie doesn't have any clue about what's the kind of clothing worn on Earth. While she tries out dozens of outfits one after another, she also ends up wearing lingerie over her T-Shirt and Jeans", informs first time director Milap Zaveri who didn't require much persuasion in convincing Jackie.
While the filmmaker claims that there was no awkwardness whatsoever from Jackie's end, one wonders what was his leading lady's take on the entire episode? Being a Miss Sri Lanka means that she has been required to wear revealing outfits on stage and ramp. However, since a scene like this could go either ways, wasn't Jackie worried about the final outcome?
"All I could hear myself was scream - 'No, no, no'", laughs Jackie when reminded of the 'incident', "What a genius Milap is, isn't it? Asking his leading lady to wear a pinkish-red lingerie over her clothes! Now can you beat that? Really, I wasn't expected to agree on doing something like this in the first mention itself."
"Anyways, Milap and me have a great understanding", Jackie gets serious here, "If at all there was something that I was uncomfortable with, he would immediately scrap it. Really, if I was serious about not doing this scene, he would have not uttered a single word. However, all said and done, I decided to go for it and see how it turns out on screen. Later after canning the shot when I saw myself on the monitor, it all looked so cute and funny. I told Milap there and then that I was cool with it being retained in the film."
Similar sentiment is shared by Milap who wanted Jackie to be comfortable more than anything else. He says, "Since Jackie's character is so innocent in the film and the scene has also been shot in a manner that it is very cute than anything else, there was no sense of discomfort for anyone. Also, since she is fully clothed in the scene, there is no obvious attempt at spicing up the proceedings. In fact I am sure that kids as well as adults would just laugh it away as the character's ignorance than an attempt to hog attention."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 22 Mar 2010 | 7:02 am After Sanjay Dutt, it's 3D animation Bird Idol for Jyotin Goel
In a career spanning more than two decades, film maker Jyotin Goel has directed only three films - Inam Dus Hazar (1987), Zahreelay (1990) and Safari (1999). Incidentally, each of the three films has featured Sanjay Dutt in the lead. However, Jyotin Goel has now moved on and for his next film, he has chosen animation characters instead of opting for 'real' actors. The film is titled Bird Idol (an obvious inspiration from hugely popular 'Indian Idol') and tells the story of a bird which enters a namesake competition.
Says Jyotin Goel, "We are aiming at the family audience as a whole for Bird Idol because animation films have a wide spectrum worldwide. I am sure this movie will not just be loved by children but also their family members. It is a heart warming beautiful story which will melt their hearts."
Made in 3D animation, Bird Idol is presented by Warner Bros. The First Look of the film was unveiled over the weekend gone by with the poster showing a menacing bird with four innocent looking birds atop his head and nose.
"The creative thought behind the First Look poster of our film is based on a saying by the famous director Alfred Hitchcock", informs Goel, "He had once said - 'The more successful the villain, the more successful the picture.' It has inspired us as we have shown the biggest possible villain in our poster whose name is 'Dhamki'. He is surrounded by four other characters including the hero 'Hummy', his love interest Surili and their two other friends."
Lasting 100 minutes, Bird Idol has music composed by Sangeet Haldipur & Siddharth with Shaan & Kailash Kher lending their vocals.
"We have tried to illustrate the victory over evil by means of music", continues Goel, "The film is not based on the human kingdom but portrays the melodious world of birds and their attempt to explore life from an unusual standpoint. It is a journey into the lives of birds as they soar over dense jungles and major cities, hence gaining a point of view of the world that is hilariously different from ours."
The story of Bird Idol revolves around a bird called 'Hummy' which is not happy with the bird music and is greatly impressed by human music. How he introduces human music to the bird music by entering into a competition called Bird Idol (and in the process puts himself and his parents into trouble) is what forms the crux of the film.
Bird Idol is all set to enjoy a solo release on 23rd April.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 22 Mar 2010 | 6:56 am LSD director Dibakar Banerjee mistaken for actor Rajit Kapoor
Dibakar Banerjee was in Kolkata on Wednesday. Groups of people who saw him disembark at the airport mistook him for actor Rajit Kapoor (of Shyam Benegal's Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda and Mammo fame). The identity-crisis continued all over the city throughout the day even when he introduced himself as a director, people wanted to know if had switched from acting to direction.
Says Dibakar, "All my life I've been mistaken for Rajit. Even our voices are the same. So I'm not surprised. Many years ago when Rajit Kapoor was doing the serial Bhyomkesh Bakshi on Doordarshan, I was often mobbed by fans who thought that was me. "
Dibakar was in Kolkata to promote Love Sex Aur Dhokha. And everywhere Dibakar had to explain he wasn't Rajit Kapoor.
Another question being asked of the director was, who was the star on whom a sting operation was performed in the third story in Love Sex Aur Dhokha.
There are three stories in Love Sex Aur Dhokha all ripping the curtain off the masks of civility that we generally wear. Says the film's director, "The first story is entitled Superhit Pyar. It stars newcomers Anshuman Jha and Shruti as a caste-differentiated couple. The second story is entitled Paap Ki Dukaan. It's about a real-life MMS scandal."
It's the third story Badnaam Shohrat about a sting operation carried out against a film star which is likely to create the maximum furor.
Is the stung star (played by Harry Pangri) based on Shakti Kapoor? "Not at all," says director Dibakar Banerjee.
However, sources insist it is Kapoor whom the third story is modeled on.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 22 Mar 2010 | 6:37 am Anjaana Anjaani negative stuck in US; Nadiadwala bringing it through direct flight
Producer Sajid Nadiadwala is spending sweaty sleepless nights. The entire unit of his film Anjaana Anjaani came back from the US. But the negative stock of his shot footage is still in the US, awaited a flight. This startling eventuality because there was no direct flight from San Francisco to Mumbai before Monday.
Anything can happen in transit. Agrees Sajid, "It is risky especially for an Indian film and that too for a producer with a name belonging to a particular community. But I had no choice but to wait till Monday for the shot footage to be sent from San Francisco to Mumbai .That's when there's a direct flight from San Francisco to Mumbai."
According to Sajid, connecting flights are too risky. "If the footage had to change flights the risk of misplacement would be far greater. So I'd rather brave a delay and let my film come on a direct flight."
In the meanwhile, as Monday creeps up on Sajid, he contemplates in his head the possibility, remote as it is, of even a part of the film being lost. "There's nothing we can do if even part of the footage gets damaged or lost in transit."
The precious cargo is insured. "But what good would the money do to me if the footage doesn't reach Mumbai intact?", reasons Sajid.
Anjaana Anjaani is at the moment kept in film lab in San Francisco. This is the first that the unit has returned without the film. Hopefully, all the labour that Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra have put into Anjaana Anjaani would reach Mumbai safe and sound.
Until then Sajid Nadiadwala and the entire unit are on tenterhooks.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 22 Mar 2010 | 4:34 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about Shaapit
There are good spirits and bad spirits waltzing all over the place. All we have to do is reach into the past and pull out the relevant ghoul and voila, we are into the realm of the spooky-cool.
Vikram Bhatt's Shaapit has a certain coherence and clarity generally denied to the horror genre. Bhatt, a past-master at creating the shiver givers treats the material on hand with affection and respect.
Shaapit is one of those rare horror thrillers which are not designed simply to scare the yell out of viewers. The research on spirits and ghosts that underlines the story of a boy in love and his effort to liberate his object of adoration from a 300-year old family curse includes scholarly interpretations of witchcraft, sorcery and other spiritual know-how.
While this knowledge-ability is an advantage it also dampens of the spirit. While on the one hand you appreciate the trouble taken to transport the horror genre beyond pedestrian scares, the effort to entrust an academic dimension to the terror often hampers the free flow of the fear.
Shaapit has a whammer of a climax when Aditya Narayan must submerge the ashes of an evil spirit (played by the articulate Natasha Sinha) who tries to stop him every 'witch' way. The flying objects in this case are not members of the audience trying to find a way out. There are genuinely riveting moments in the plot, shot with the compelling and persuasive genre-defining enjoyment.
Pravin Bhatt's cinematography exudes an enchanting expertise. The film is shot in accentuated orange, yellow, black and grey hues that create a feeling of hushed expectancy and tentative beauty. The narrative is energized by a rush of riveting episodes all meant to create a spiral of suspenseful segments in the ongoing spook-opera known as How To Save Your Beloved From Evil Spirits.
In Raaz Vikram Bhatt had created the reverse energy. Bipasha Basu had rescued her husband Dino Morea from the clutches of a sexy spirit.
Aditya Narayan looks a little to raw and inexperienced to do a rescue the damsel in distress. He has a screen presence which could be better cultivated. He has good support from a friend (Shubh Joshi) and Rahul Dev playing an occultist academician. The new girl Shweta Agarwal would have made a better impact with less makeup. Tragically there is absolutely no sexual energy between the pair. That kind of kills the whole intention underlining the guy's rescue operation.
Vikram Bhatt, always a neat compact and straightforward storyteller, moves in two time zones. The art and décor for the sequences of palace intrigue 300 years ago suggest more papier-mâché than authenticity.
But the film is well-mounted and packaged with sincerity. Yup, the ghoul can be quite cool.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 22 Mar 2010 | 3:24 am
