Click above for event stills
The last and final day at FICCI Frames didn't turn out to be as hectic and loaded with seminars as the previous ones, but certainly had quite a few high-profile dignitaries as speakers. It's safe to say it turned out to be a star studded finale of the three day event. Here are the highlights.
A panel discussion on 'User Generated Content' was an apt one following the discussions over evolving digital technologies over the past two days. The discussion was moderated by Neeraj Roy, CEO & MD, Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, had a panel of senior executives from technology developers and content providers - discussing the impact user generated content will have on different mediums. The panel also discussed the room for growth in this arena and the technological advancements that need to hand-in-hand to support content creation.
Like the previous two days, there was another session dealing with the television industry. It's nice to see that FICCI has been giving TV equal importance as the film industry. Moderated by Jagdish Kumar, President South India, Star TV Pvt. Ltd., the panel on "Where is the profitability in the TV industry" consisted of COOs, CEOs and MDs of the major TV channels. The panelists busted some myths about the TV industry's revenue turnover and then proceeded to discuss the prospects and avenues they are trying to monetize for higher profitability.
A discussion on film marketing was next, where the panelist shed light on the innovative strategies utilized in the past to those which are in play currently. The use of handheld platforms and internet was highly stressed upon, especially since the recent times have seen many films being released over the internet. The panelists found that to be a safer medium and also a great profit earning move. The future of digital-exhibition in Indian theatres was also brought up. With the lower costs of distribution, releasing films has become considerably cheaper and will aid smaller budget films to find a release.
A key note address by Uday Shankar, CEO of Star India - was thronged by delegates.
As we drew closer to the evening, the major highlights of the day began to roll out. The session on 'Film Industry Anti-Piracy Coalition Launch', with personalities like Yash Chopra, Harish Dayani, Siddharth Roy Kapoor and Sandeep Bhargava on stage brought out alarming facts and figures to establish the magnitude of losses suffered by the Indian film industry due to piracy - an astronomical amount of close to 20,000 crores. Many reports have stated that a major chunk of this money earned by pirates goes on to fuel terrorism and anti-state activities. The film industry, it seems has decided to come together and fight this evil along with the help of the government.
The next discussion on a key topic - 'Entertaining India in the Next Decade' was moderated by NDTV'S Vikram Chandra and the panel consisted of actress Vidya Balan, theatre personality Sanjna Kapoor, music composers Vishal and Shekhar and Yash Chopra. Together they painted an optimistic image of the future as they saw potential in emerging talent which is going to be supported adequately with evolving technologies. The internet according to all of them will make content much more accessible to the masses and hence change the scenario all together - but not in away where it would replace film and theatre, but instead create a new genre of entertainment.
The valedictory session had Ambika Soni, I&B minister of India and Ashok Amritraj giving the keynote addresses. Ambika Soni spoke about her opinions on the issues raised in the last 3 days of FICCI and also discussed the actions she will take to resolve those issues. Most importantly she elaborated on what will be the steps the government will take to combat piracy.
FICCI Frames concluded with an award ceremony, which honored various personalities from the Indian media industry. The winners included big names that were present personally to collect the awards - Amitabh Bacchan, Vidya Balan, Ranbir Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan. The award ceremony turned out to be a gala event, with music performances and short speeches.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 19 Mar 2010 | 6:04 am Priyanka Chopra to host Fear Factor - Season 3
Who is the fittest female actor in our industry? Tough call right? But who is the fittest female actor in Bollywood to host an action adventure show replacing Akshay? Well, the count comes down to just one and that is our very own Priyanka Chopra. With her pizzazz and fit body she sure seems just the one to fit into Akshay's shoes for Khatron Ke Khiladi - Season 3.
As you wonder why Akshay is even being replaced, then it must be revealed that the format of the show has undergone a change. Whereas it was 13 beauties as contestants and one hunk hosting the show in the first two editions, now it's going to be 13 guys and one beauty, ready to rein them and put them through gruellingly tough tasks. What's more the 13 guys are no ordinary persons but some popular National and International cricketers. Sounds fun doesn't it?
It's also revealed that Piggy Chops would be performing some of the stunts herself too. Basking in the excitement, Priyanka tweeted, "O now I can officially finally tell ya'll my secret. I'll be hosting Fear Factor 3 this season! That's 'Khatron Ke Khiladi'!! I'm tooo excited!" Well! She sure has reason enough to be.
KKK Season 3 that was initially going to be shot in South Africa will now be shot in Brazil and will also mark Priyanka's debut on television. With Priyanka Chopra and the renowned names from the cricketing world coming together, the TRPs will surely be touching new highs when this show goes on air.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 19 Mar 2010 | 5:57 am "I play a professor in Shaapit who helps Aditya in his journey" - Rahul Dev
With his chiselled looks and intense eyes, he makes for the ultimate bad guy; We are talking about the one and only Rahul Dev whose film Shaapit releases today. Bollywood Hungama chatted up with Rahul to find out more about his role in the film as well as his future plans in Bollywood.
Shaapit, which means cursed, is but obviously a supernatural thriller. Rahul tells us, "Yes Shaapit is a supernatural thriller. In the film I play the role of Pashupati, he is a professor. The thing is that the girl in the film is cursed while her boyfriend has to find a way to somehow annul this curse. That's where I come in as a kind of guide who helps the boy along in his journey."
While talking about the lead actor Aditya Narayan who is making his debut with the film, Rahul says, "You know, now that I've worked with Aditya, I think that he is by far the best newcomer I have ever worked with, which in itself is saying a lot as I have previously worked with 4 other newcomers, and he is better than all of them."
Talking about his forthcoming films, Rahul informs, "Post Shaapit, I have a film Ek Accident. In fact, we have just finished shooting for the film. In essence Ek Accident is also a kind of thriller, but different from Shaapit as it involves more of a psychological thrilling aspect."
One thing is for certain there is certainly lots to look forward to for fans of Rahul Dev who has quite a few interesting films lined up.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 19 Mar 2010 | 5:44 am "I am not a pseudo intellectual" - Tanushree Dutta
Comfortable with her skin, she oozed oomph in songs like 'Aap Ki Kashish', 'Mummy Ko Nahi Hai Pata', 'Hichki' to of course her flagship track 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne'. Just when it seemed that things were looking up for this Bengali beauty, she surprised many with her guest appearances in films like 36 China Town and Bhagam Bhag. While films like Risk and Good Boy Bad Boy hardly added to her profile or made audiences take her seriously as an actor, her Raqeeb (in which she had enjoyed an author backed role as a scheming seductress) tanked as well.
Some respite came in the form of Dhol but non-performance of Speed as well as Saas Bahu Aur Sensex meant that Tanushree Dutta ended up doing some serious rethinking about her Bollywood career. And then arrived Rokkkk where she resurfaced on the Bollywood scene after a hiatus.
Though the film didn't do much at the box office, Tanushree was noticed for her good performance in the role of a vulnerable young woman. Meanwhile, Tanushree promises that she is not taking a de-glam route for good in movies to come. Though her soon to release 'Apartment' also sees her playing the role of a victim, Tanushree is sure that sure that looking good for camera is definitely in.
Talking about being comfortable with her skin, what's her stand on exposing for camera in this new phase of her career? Given the fact that she films like Apartment and Rokkk have been intense, how is she ensuring that she is not entirely resorting to taking a de-glam route in her pursuit to give a serious account of herself?
"Please, I am not getting boring for sure. I am not a pseudo intellectual who wants to be an actress in commercial mainstream Bollywood cinema and still want to de-glam myself. Yes, my current crop of movies belong to different genre and treatment but it isn't as if I would suddenly have dark circles around my eyes or have the kind of make up that intentionally makes me look ugly. Sorry, but I am not allowing my eye lashes and make up to go anywhere," smiles Tanushree.
With her parents living with her in Mumbai and giving her all the moral support, Tanushree is looking forward to 2010 being a new beginning to her career.
"Yes, it is indeed a new beginning for me. The fresh bunch of movies that I am doing is much nicer in appeal. Also, they definitely boast of far better scripts that I have come across. Hopefully, I would now see much better response from audiences through these films", says Tanushree, Apartment is now ready for release and Rokkk has already seen good feedback coming my way. In fact recently I also had a Tamil release, Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai, to my name which worked well at the box office. I was thankfully very busy right through 2009 and no wonder; it really went fast for me. I am positive that the scenario would just turn out to be the same and perhaps even better in the months to come."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 19 Mar 2010 | 4:10 am Lahore is mostly watchable - Rediff

All through 2009, Shahid Kapoor was mighty occupied as he was working non-stop on multiple films. Other than his biggest money spinner till date, Kaminey, he also had work on Dil Bole Hadippa, Parmeet Sethi's Badmaash Company with Anushka Sharma and Chance Pe Dance for which he had to actually shoot twice after Genelia D'Souza came in for Jiah Khan.
With a welcome break coming his way between January arrival of Chance Pe Dance and his next release Paathshaala (scheduled for April), where he has an extended guest appearance lasting as long as 40-45 minutes, Shahid Kapoor is happy to come down to first gear from the fifth gear.
"There I was working non-stop on films where I was shooting, dubbing or promoting them. However, now that I am relatively free, I am enjoying every moment of it", says Shahid with a glee on his face, "It is a period of unemployment for me and though I won't say that it is a good thing for any actor, a momentary break is anytime welcome. At least this way, I can use this break to reflect on the work I have done and analyse myself."
Continuing in the same vein, he adds, "Hota aisa hai ki jab aap poora poora mahina kaam kar rahe hote ho toh all the time you have deadlines playing in your mind. As an actor, you can't leave anything incomplete and hence your concentration is totally on the film you are on. Apne liye aapko time hi nahi milta and there is no headspace either to think about anything else. It is just when you are in a situation like I am in today that your professional life goes from fifth gear to first gear and you start reflecting on the past, present and future."
The fact though remains that Shahid is picking up a solid rope in his career to take him to the ultimate destination in Bollywood. With his backlog almost through (with an exception of Milenge Milenge with Kareena Kapoor which has now been moved to June) and the shooting through for all the films that he had signed last, all his concentration is now reserved for Mausam which marks the directorial debut of his father Pankaj Kapoor.
"First and foremost let me clarify that Mausam is just a working title. The film's shooting begins in April and while I am shooting for this, I won't be working on any other film", Shahid gets serious as he begins to talk about the approach that he is taking for Mausam, "No, it is not that just because it is dad's film, I am giving it any extra attention. Instead, it is the kind of film which an actor should be doing in a single stretch without working on anything else. The script is such that as an actor, I have to dedicate all my time and presence to it. Its more to do with the subject and the character than anything else and you would see it for yourself once the film releases."
Meanwhile, he is quite pleased that Paathshaala is all set for 16th April release. ''Paathshala is small in comparison to some other films that I have done. However, though I am not a quintessential hero in the film, it isn't as if I have a special appearance, as has been speculated by some. I have a substantial role that lasts for 30-40 minutes in the film", clarifies Shahid.
Other than Ayesha Takia, who was last seen in Wanted, Paathshala also stars Nana Patekar along with child artists Swini Khara, Ali Haji and Dwij Yadav.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 19 Mar 2010 | 3:35 am The Hurt Locker: Heart didn't lockFor the first time in history, a lady got Oscar award too. New York-based American music composer Wayne Sharpe, best known for his award-winning background scores in Prakash's Gangaajal and Apaharan, now doing the background for Jha's Raajneeti, was down in Mumbai earlier this week to finalize a new version of the eternal national patriotic song Vande Mataram.
The inimitable poet Gulzar, going international for the second time after 'Jai Ho' in Slumdog Millionaire, will pen the lyrics for the new-age Vande Mataram.
This would be the first attempt by a foreigner to modify and recreate an Indian patriotic song. Wayne Sharpe's new-age Vande Mataram would have a whole array of present day playback voices from Bollywood singing in the song.
The original Vande Mataram for the 1952 film was recorded by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Hemant Kumar. A. R. Rahman later did another version of Vande Mataram.
But Wayne's version of the timeless track for Raajneeti would be entirely different. Speaking before leaving for New York, Wayne Sharpe said, "I specialize in background scores. Now I'm doing my first Bollywood song for Raajneeti. It's a re-arrangement of Vande Mataram with my version of the tune. I think I'm the first American to do this. It'd be huge production with a big orchestra. We'd have a bit of the old melody along with some of the new one that I'm writing. There would be a whole cross-section of singers."
Wayne credits Prakash Jha with his Bollywood connection. "I met Prakash through a mutual friend in New York. He invited me to India to do the background music in Gangaajal. Now I'm doing a third film for him. My speciality is working on western sounds and combining it with Indian sounds. That's the radar I'd like to stay within."
Wayne is trained in western classical music. And that's the sound we'll hear in this version of Vande Mataram. He is a big fan of A R Rahman. "Rahman's score in Taal just changed my life. It was a major pinnacle for my career as a musician."
Wayne has also completed the background music in Sanjay Chouhan's Lahore. "I see Mumbai as a second home," said the New Yorker before flying out.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 19 Mar 2010 | 3:17 am Lady Gaga's racy Oz show shocks parentsMelbourne (ANI): Lady Gaga's Australian tour has left many parents chaperoning their kids to ask why the concert did not carry a classification to warn them of the racy routines the singer put on. Rahman won't be available for film scores during most of 2010. "It's a very tough schedule for me this year," says Rahman. "I'll be out of the country for five months which I've kept aside completely for the word tour."
The concerts will take Rahman to places he has never been before. "I essentially need time for my music, spirituality and family. Everything else is secondary. We'll be going to remote places in Europe, the Far East and America. I'll be touring from this month (March 2010).This would be my longest tour ever and I'm not thinking of any other work."
Contrary to reports Rahman turned 43 (and not 44) on January 6. "I was born in 1967, so it's my 43rd birthday. I am an old man now. Do I feel older? It's a good feeling. I'm heading towards the place where all of us are destined to .You are born and then one day, you die. So my policy in life is to do what I want to do today, not tomorrow. If I want to do good things in life I better do them now."
Rahman says he doesn't fear death. "I think about death every day. Last year I lost a couple of very close friends. I've been watching people close to me die from the time I was a child. Very early I lost my father and my grandmother whom I was very close to. So death is always been with me. It's the only certainty in life."
Rahman admits time management is a problem. "But you have to prioritize your time and do what you must. For example I know I've to be away for five months this year. So it'd be foolish of me to commit myself to anything until I finish my concerts."
Rahman says it's a blessing to work out of his home. "My family is always around me. I think that's what keeps me creatively charged. When I travel I crave to return. My kids are growing up. It's important that they see their father regularly. Or they'll soon start calling me Uncle."
Rahman has just done soundtrack for Tamil film directed by Gautam Menon. "Then I've Mani Ratnam's Raavan and Abbas Tyrewala's 1-800-Love. Also Shekhar Kapoor's Paani which is a very important film. I've recorded one song for it. After the Grammys, I'll look at other international offers. But with the world tour on will I have the time?Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 18 Mar 2010 | 8:19 am Subhash K. Jha speaks about Lahore
Combining sports and politics is not an easy thing to do. But then it's not that difficult either considering the two are inextricably intertwined specially in the Asian sub-continent where Pakistani cricketers are forbidden from participating in Indian sports events and Indians don't get visas to visit across the border.
Debutant director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan dares to visit the forbidden territory. Lahore is about sports and politics and characters from both the spheres getting embroiled in a terrible fight to finish.
The script accommodates a great deal of the sporting spirit as seen in the perspective of Indo-Pak politics. Within that ambitious framework Chauhan weaves in the human relationships that make a leap for warmth and then stay stuck in semi-sterility. The film has too much to say on sports, politics and human nature. It isn't able to say all of it in a lucid language.
Chauhan has chosen a unique sport like kickboxing to spotlight the process of cultural assimilation that underscores all the perverse politicking that goes on at the surface level between the two countries.
The Indian and Pakistani coaches played by Farouq Shaikh and Sabyasachi Chakavarty are seen to be sportingly at loggerheads, a bit like the coaches in Yashraj Films' Dil Bole Hadippa, though Lahore takes the spirit of sportsmanship across the border with more seriousness of purpose.
In the boxing ring the game gets deadly when the Indian kickboxing champion Sushant Singh is delivered a deadly blow by his Pakistani opponent. A churning-point in the narrative arrived at in restrained rhythms.
This is where Chauhan's narratives comes into its own. The dilemma of the deceased kickboxer's younger brother Veeru (newcomer Aanaahad) to preserve his sporting spirit in the midst of high-voltage mutually-destructive Indo-Pak politics is built into the plot with architectural astuteness. Not all of the material outside the central conflict where Veeru forsakes cricket to pursue his slain brother's dream in the kickboxing arena, works on the scripting level.
Does Veeru only want to use the boxing ring to avenge his brother's death?
Though the characters falter in quantitative excess, the opposition of sports and politics and politics in sports is put into a persuasive perspective. The rest of drama tends to get tedious mainly because there are too many characters swarming the Indo-Pak map. We see people from both countries trooping in to scarcely record their presence in the plot before dissolving in the unresolved space that occupies the No Man's Land.
Veeru's romantic attachment to the Pakistani girl (newcomer Shraddha Das) is skirted across in a few scenes where they exchange veiled pleasantries. Passion is seriously forfeited in the flurry of squeezing in a large canvas of characters.
It's in the kickboxing scenes that the film exudes blood sweat and tears. The debutant Aanahaad and his opponent Mukesh Rishi reveal a skill in the ring that cannot leave the audience unaffected. The newcomer does well in the sports scenes but needs to brush up his skills in the emotional moments.
Of the rest of the cast Nafisa Ali, Ashish Vidyarthi, the late Nirmal Pandey and several other talented actors are wasted in sketchy roles. The film's surface is over-populated. But its inner life suggests a sincerity of purpose. Wayne Sharpe's background score and Neelabh Kaul's cinematography are first-rate. They add to the feeling of a film that goes beyond sports, but stops short of making a statement on life lived on the border of hostility.
Lahore is not only about kick-boxing. At times you wish it was.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Mar 2010 | 7:04 am Sunny Deol to star in Neerraj Pathak's political thriller titled Gannit
After a long hiatus from films, the man with the 'dhai kilo ka haath' returns with an action suspense film Right Yaaa Wrong. With mixed reviews ranging from an engrossing film to a less than moderate attempt, Neerraj Pathak manages to add enthusiasm to his voice considering the fact that he achieved what he wanted to.
However, post Right Yaaa Wrong, Neerraj Pathak, not being one to stay calm for long, has already begun work on his next titled Gannit. "Gannit is a political thriller based on the political scenario in U.P. at this moment. I have already approached Sunny with the concept of the film and he has confirmed that he will star in it. Apart from him in the lead, there are two other male leads who need to be finalized and three lead female spots that are vacant as well", says Pathak.
"In fact we are still really a bit early in the process of finalizing things for the film and it will be a good 20 odd days before I come out with any official press release of sorts but this is all for now", while he further tells us about the shooting of the film, "Right now we are looking at starting the shoot for Gannit somewhere around May, while for the release, I am looking to finish the film in say about 6 to 8 months, so somewhere next year."
However, the one fact that plays on our mind is one Neerraj put to rest immediately as he talks about his producer, "Gannit will be produced by Red Carpet and Blue Moon Pictures together, while in terms of music we haven't got down to really discussing it thoroughly, but I think that once we have everything in place we will start with music as it will help us with a clearer picture of what exactly we want."
With this conformation, it certainly seems like Sunny Deol is all set at make a full fledged comeback of sorts which started with Right Yaaa Wrong, and will be followed by his home production Yamla Pagla Deewana and Neerraj Pathak's Gannit.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 18 Mar 2010 | 6:55 am Film about salt fields of India makes it to Ann Arbor FestivalA short experimental film by Shambhavi Kaul titled 'Scene 32' has made it into the competitive category in internationally renowned 48th Ann Arbor Film Festival of USA being held March 23-28. There have been aliens and there would be aliens. However, this is one alien who is bound to be loved, adored, admired and followed by one and all. We are talking about Jacqueline Fernandez a.k.a Jackie who plays an alien in search of love in her upcoming film Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai .
Though one looks forward to many more aliens like her landing on Earth, there is one trait about this alien which actually leads one to gasp in amazement. And that's not just due to the beauty factor but the very fact that Jackie is shown to be carrying her own spacecraft wherever she travels. Puzzled? Well, here is what director Milap Zaveri has to say about Jackie and her spacecraft.
"The film is targeted at kids and young adults and hence it was imperative that we bring on enough funny moments that would keep them engaged. For that, we worked a lot on Jackie's character and one such quality about this character is that she carries her own spacecraft wherever she travels. It does come in handy for her and while her friends on Earth, most notably Riteish Deshmukh, are quite baffled by how she makes it possible, it is this nice little trick that she has up her sleeves that makes it really work for her", explains Milap.
Well, the secret behind this trick is that Jackie comes with the power of shrinking objects due to which she can drastically reduce the size of the spacecraft and make it so tiny that it could well fit into her pocket. Later, on need basis, she can get it back to its normal self and choose to fly away, as required.
This is not all as she has some other fun gadgets that she carries with her.
"However, the intent was not to make a film which focuses on gadgets and special effects. This is not a sci-fi film but a romantic comedy. This is why we focused on scenes turning out to be funny rather than gadgets being noticed in a big way. In fact even the special effects have been kept at the minimum and we haven't allowed them to rule over emotions", assures Milap.
Well, given the kind of fate that some overtly VFX laden films have suffered in the past, Milap's cautious approach towards Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai is much understandable. Now as the film approaches its 9th April release, one looks forward to how it fares against Prince which is an action flick and is quite gadget-heavy as well as VFX laden right through its narrative.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Mar 2010 | 4:58 am Salman Khan to star in remake of Bodyguard
He has been the heart throb of Bollywood for decades now, and the audiences have been witness to the varied characters he has played throughout his career, he is Salman Khan. The latest development is that Sallu bhai is all set to star in the remake of the south film Bodyguard.
The film which is being produced by Atul Agnihotri is still in the adaptation stages. However, Atul confirms saying, "Yes. Even though we are still adapting the script to fit the Bollywood audiences, we have confirmed Salman to play the lead role in it, while for the leading lady we are yet to decide and are keeping the options open."
The original, which was directed by Siddiqui, will have him behind the camera for the remake as well, says Atul, "As for the direction of the film, I have known Siddiqui for quite some time now. In fact, we were in talks when he was making the film down south. And now after it has acclaimed fame, I think there is no one better to direct it than him."
However, a little while ago there had been rumours that said that the rights for the film were with Boney Kapoor, to which Atul firmly states, "This is total rubbish. If there was anything like that Boney would have definitely told me, the rights for the remake have always been with me."
Further Atul tells us, "Right now, we are working on the adaptation of the film. Once this is complete, we will launch the making and finalize of the lyrics for the songs. Since most of the film has a lot of outdoor shoots, we are looking to start the shoot some where in the last three months of this year, while keeping in mind a tentative summer release for the film."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 18 Mar 2010 | 4:07 am Is Goundamani really dead?Goundamani is a Tamil film actor and comedian.
