Jha speaks about Lahore
Combining sports and politics is not an easy thing to do. But then it's not that difficult either considering the two are inextricably intertwined specially in the Asian sub-continent where Pakistani cricketers are forbidden from participating in Indian sports events and Indians don't get visas to visit across the border.
Debutant director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan dares to visit the forbidden territory. Lahore is about sports and politics and characters from both the spheres getting embroiled in a terrible fight to finish.
The script accommodates a great deal of the sporting spirit as seen in the perspective of Indo-Pak politics. Within that ambitious framework Chauhan weaves in the human relationships that make a leap for warmth and then stay stuck in semi-sterility. The film has too much to say on sports, politics and human nature. It isn't able to say all of it in a lucid language.
Chauhan has chosen a unique sport like kickboxing to spotlight the process of cultural assimilation that underscores all the perverse politicking that goes on at the surface level between the two countries.
The Indian and Pakistani coaches played by Farouq Shaikh and Sabyasachi Chakavarty are seen to be sportingly at loggerheads, a bit like the coaches in Yashraj Films' Dil Bole Hadippa, though Lahore takes the spirit of sportsmanship across the border with more seriousness of purpose.
In the boxing ring the game gets deadly when the Indian kickboxing champion Sushant Singh is delivered a deadly blow by his Pakistani opponent. A churning-point in the narrative arrived at in restrained rhythms.
This is where Chauhan's narratives comes into its own. The dilemma of the deceased kickboxer's younger brother Veeru (newcomer Aanaahad) to preserve his sporting spirit in the midst of high-voltage mutually-destructive Indo-Pak politics is built into the plot with architectural astuteness. Not all of the material outside the central conflict where Veeru forsakes cricket to pursue his slain brother's dream in the kickboxing arena, works on the scripting level.
Does Veeru only want to use the boxing ring to avenge his brother's death?
Though the characters falter in quantitative excess, the opposition of sports and politics and politics in sports is put into a persuasive perspective. The rest of drama tends to get tedious mainly because there are too many characters swarming the Indo-Pak map. We see people from both countries trooping in to scarcely record their presence in the plot before dissolving in the unresolved space that occupies the No Man's Land.
Veeru's romantic attachment to the Pakistani girl (newcomer Shraddha Das) is skirted across in a few scenes where they exchange veiled pleasantries. Passion is seriously forfeited in the flurry of squeezing in a large canvas of characters.
It's in the kickboxing scenes that the film exudes blood sweat and tears. The debutant Aanahaad and his opponent Mukesh Rishi reveal a skill in the ring that cannot leave the audience unaffected. The newcomer does well in the sports scenes but needs to brush up his skills in the emotional moments.
Of the rest of the cast Nafisa Ali, Ashish Vidyarthi, the late Nirmal Pandey and several other talented actors are wasted in sketchy roles. The film's surface is over-populated. But its inner life suggests a sincerity of purpose. Wayne Sharpe's background score and Neelabh Kaul's cinematography are first-rate. They add to the feeling of a film that goes beyond sports, but stops short of making a statement on life lived on the border of hostility.
Lahore is not only about kick-boxing. At times you wish it was.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Mar 2010 | 7:04 am Sunny Deol to star in Neerraj Pathak's political thriller titled Gannit
After a long hiatus from films, the man with the 'dhai kilo ka haath' returns with an action suspense film Right Yaaa Wrong. With mixed reviews ranging from an engrossing film to a less than moderate attempt, Neerraj Pathak manages to add enthusiasm to his voice considering the fact that he achieved what he wanted to.
However, post Right Yaaa Wrong, Neerraj Pathak, not being one to stay calm for long, has already begun work on his next titled Gannit. "Gannit is a political thriller based on the political scenario in U.P. at this moment. I have already approached Sunny with the concept of the film and he has confirmed that he will star in it. Apart from him in the lead, there are two other male leads who need to be finalized and three lead female spots that are vacant as well", says Pathak.
"In fact we are still really a bit early in the process of finalizing things for the film and it will be a good 20 odd days before I come out with any official press release of sorts but this is all for now", while he further tells us about the shooting of the film, "Right now we are looking at starting the shoot for Gannit somewhere around May, while for the release, I am looking to finish the film in say about 6 to 8 months, so somewhere next year."
However, the one fact that plays on our mind is one Neerraj put to rest immediately as he talks about his producer, "Gannit will be produced by Red Carpet and Blue Moon Pictures together, while in terms of music we haven't got down to really discussing it thoroughly, but I think that once we have everything in place we will start with music as it will help us with a clearer picture of what exactly we want."
With this conformation, it certainly seems like Sunny Deol is all set at make a full fledged comeback of sorts which started with Right Yaaa Wrong, and will be followed by his home production Yamla Pagla Deewana and Neerraj Pathak's Gannit.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 18 Mar 2010 | 6:55 am I was quickly put in the 'hot and sultry' category: Tanushree

There have been aliens and there would be aliens. However, this is one alien who is bound to be loved, adored, admired and followed by one and all. We are talking about Jacqueline Fernandez a.k.a Jackie who plays an alien in search of love in her upcoming film Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai .
Though one looks forward to many more aliens like her landing on Earth, there is one trait about this alien which actually leads one to gasp in amazement. And that's not just due to the beauty factor but the very fact that Jackie is shown to be carrying her own spacecraft wherever she travels. Puzzled? Well, here is what director Milap Zaveri has to say about Jackie and her spacecraft.
"The film is targeted at kids and young adults and hence it was imperative that we bring on enough funny moments that would keep them engaged. For that, we worked a lot on Jackie's character and one such quality about this character is that she carries her own spacecraft wherever she travels. It does come in handy for her and while her friends on Earth, most notably Riteish Deshmukh, are quite baffled by how she makes it possible, it is this nice little trick that she has up her sleeves that makes it really work for her", explains Milap.
Well, the secret behind this trick is that Jackie comes with the power of shrinking objects due to which she can drastically reduce the size of the spacecraft and make it so tiny that it could well fit into her pocket. Later, on need basis, she can get it back to its normal self and choose to fly away, as required.
This is not all as she has some other fun gadgets that she carries with her.
"However, the intent was not to make a film which focuses on gadgets and special effects. This is not a sci-fi film but a romantic comedy. This is why we focused on scenes turning out to be funny rather than gadgets being noticed in a big way. In fact even the special effects have been kept at the minimum and we haven't allowed them to rule over emotions", assures Milap.
Well, given the kind of fate that some overtly VFX laden films have suffered in the past, Milap's cautious approach towards Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai is much understandable. Now as the film approaches its 9th April release, one looks forward to how it fares against Prince which is an action flick and is quite gadget-heavy as well as VFX laden right through its narrative.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Mar 2010 | 4:58 am Mohanlal, Resul receive D. He has been the heart throb of Bollywood for decades now, and the audiences have been witness to the varied characters he has played throughout his career, he is Salman Khan. The latest development is that Sallu bhai is all set to star in the remake of the south film Bodyguard.
The film which is being produced by Atul Agnihotri is still in the adaptation stages. However, Atul confirms saying, "Yes. Even though we are still adapting the script to fit the Bollywood audiences, we have confirmed Salman to play the lead role in it, while for the leading lady we are yet to decide and are keeping the options open."
The original, which was directed by Siddiqui, will have him behind the camera for the remake as well, says Atul, "As for the direction of the film, I have known Siddiqui for quite some time now. In fact, we were in talks when he was making the film down south. And now after it has acclaimed fame, I think there is no one better to direct it than him."
However, a little while ago there had been rumours that said that the rights for the film were with Boney Kapoor, to which Atul firmly states, "This is total rubbish. If there was anything like that Boney would have definitely told me, the rights for the remake have always been with me."
Further Atul tells us, "Right now, we are working on the adaptation of the film. Once this is complete, we will launch the making and finalize of the lyrics for the songs. Since most of the film has a lot of outdoor shoots, we are looking to start the shoot some where in the last three months of this year, while keeping in mind a tentative summer release for the film."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 18 Mar 2010 | 4:07 am Lily Allen embarrassed by fan

A lot is heard and said about monkey business. Mostly referred to in plain humour, seldom does it happen that 'monkeying around' takes any serious connotation.
This is what happened during the shooting of Sajid Khan's Housefull where a monkey plays a key role in a funny fight sequence. Though the film does boast of an A plus setup with the likes of Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal and Jiah Khan towering the cast, it was the pint sized monkey that demanded most attention. Reason? Its Hollywood roots. This is the same monkey who is nothing less than a star after having worked in a mega blockbuster like Pirates of the Caribbean. No wonder, 'starry' tantrums were at its peak during the shooting of Housefull.
Laughs Sajid Khan, "It was as amusing as it gets. My first film Heyy Babyy was a multi starrer and it went along so smoothly. People asked me that how would I handle my three heroes and three heroines in Housefull but I used to laugh it away wondering what was the fuss all about. After all most of the cast members are my friends first, and have immense faith in me and each of them was quite clear about his or her role in the film. This is why I always believed that the shooting of Housefull will go on smoothly. Little did I know that of all characters in my film, it would be a monkey that would end up throwing so many tantrums."
For a highlight sequence in the film, Akshay Kumar gets all troubled due to this monkey which snatches Deepika's mobile and runs away. In the incidents that follow, Akshay gets all beaten up by the monkey; so much so that there are multiple slaps that he ends up receiving with tell tale marks all over his face. While Akshay was sport enough to live with the on-screen humiliation, all for the sake of his audience and the fun that the sequence promised, it seemed that the monkey had other ideas. He wanted to give that 'perfect take' and the makers of Housefull had no choice but to give in to the demand.
There was an entire cast and crew at a location on London where they were paying lakhs by day and here was a monkey, correction - a star monkey, which needed at least 15 days to get into the 'skin of the character'. So it took its own time to get trained, get into a completely perfect state of mind to 'act' with its co-stars and then arrive on sets.
So is it just a monkey that found itself to be in constant spotlight or is there anything more that Housefull has to offer, as far as its non-human cast is concerned? Well, for audience, it indeed seems that there is a promising entertainer ahead once Housefull releases with its mega stars that include human beings as well as animals. As for the rest, watch this space for more developments as the film readies itself for a 30th April release.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Mar 2010 | 3:31 am Well Done Abba is the best days of my life: Boman IraniThey say that when actors reach their forties, they've either turned themselves into superstars or are thrown out of the business. If you've wondered why Mumbai is becoming shooting-hostile and why filmmakers prefer to shoot away from the city, here's an answer.
Shooting at public places in Mumbai is getting prohibitive to the extreme. This, Apoorva Lakhia discovered when he needed to shoot Hide 'N' Seek in a shopping mall in Mumbai.
"I was told the rental charge at a city mall would be Rs 2.5 lakhs per hour! It was more economical for me to shoot in Bangkok's Sony Mall. It's quite understandable why more and more units are shooting away from Mumbai."
Apoorva finally shot in a mall in Ahmedabad. "We had to shoot for 21 days and we were given permission to shoot from 11 pm to 6 am. And thereafter in the basement for a couple of hours every day...all this, mind you, for Rs 50,000 per day. Compared to this throwaway rate (which I got partly because the mall is owned by a friend of mine), the Rs. 2.5 lakhs per hour that I was asked to cough up in the Mumbai mall is a joke."
Lakhia feels Mumbai needs to get realistic about shooting rates in public places.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 18 Mar 2010 | 3:23 am Vivaan Bhatena, the new dada of DadagiriThe show has got a rowdy name but Bindass and Endemol India have come up with a very noble idea for their third season of Dadagiri. FICCI FRAMES had a quick start on Day 2 and though the turnout didn't seem as high as a day 1, there were an interesting set of sessions. The highlights-
The first keynote of the day was delivered by Ronnie Screwvala of UTV, where he shed light on the future of the film industry.
A highly engaging panel discussion underlining the need of the hour of the Indian film industry - good screenplays. The session The Screenplay: Indian Cinema's Missing Link was moderated by Ben Rekhi. The panel constituted prolific writers like - Javed Akhtar, Kamlesh Pandey, Steven de Souza and Vijay Krishna Acharya. The lone producer amongst these writers on the panel was UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapoor. The writers expressed concern over the shoddy treatment Indian screenwriters are given by the producers, who do not realize the importance of a good screenplay. Everyone on the panel agreed that the prime reason for the high failure rate of Indian films was essentially, poor scripts. The sooner the producers and writers come together on the same platform to create well written screenplays the better for the film industry.
MJ Akbar gave a standalone keynote on the current state of Indian journalism and print media. His talk was in relation to the impact of advertising, politics and changing consumer needs on the news content. In his opinion the major decisions regarding the content in today's age are not necessarily influenced by advertising, but the 'board room'. The media and news industry today has grown immensely and with the high volume of money at stake - the business honchos in board rooms will have the upper hand in influencing content. He shared his views on how a newspaper can develop its credibility in spite of external pressures. His speech also drove home the point that the emergence on new media forms wouldn't cannibalize the existing news media available as each one has its distinct properties, and that newspapers are here to stay for a very long time.
A session on VFX, discussed the global perspective, upcoming trends, and future of the VFX industry. The panel consisted of VFX experts like EyeQube's Charles Darby, Visual Effects Society's Tim McGovern, Kerner's Eric Edmeades and Autodesk's Bruno Sargeant.
A session on filmmaking opportunities abroad and co-productions was helpful in dispensing information on the supporting infrastructure available for filmmakers to film abroad. Also, the Q&A that followed was enlightening to all those from film production background as the experienced panel was able to answer their questions to T.
Like yesterday, another seminar focusing on the current trends in Indian television content was held, titled Through The Looking Glass: Has Indian Television Matured? The seminar was moderated by Anil Wanvari, founder of IndianTelevision.com and the panel consisted of heads from different broadcasting houses. The session emphasized on the changing viewing patterns that are influencing content creation.
The Great Film Debate: Do Film Reviews Matter? was the topic under discussion at yet another panel discussion, which proved to be the most entertaining and peppy discussions yet. Moderated by Julian Alcantra of Corona pictures and his panel consisted of renowned Hollywood film producer - Lawrence Bender, filmmakers - Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar, critics - Rajeev Masand and Komal Natha, and business journalist - Vanita KOhli Khandekar. While Lawrence Bender, maintained a calm stand that reviews are influential and helpful for a film but cannot necessarily affect its success, Karan Johar on the other hand took the opportunity to vehemently criticize the film critics in our country and imposing that their reviews can never affect a film's success. Anurag Kashyap believed that 'good-ratings' in reviews do help low budget films like his own, as they prompt the audiences to go visit cinema halls and check a new movie out. The discussion raised the necessity of having trained film reviewers who had an understanding of film aesthetics and could comment on a film in a constructive manner, even if they had negative opinions. Amongst the other questions that came forth during the discussion were whether film reviews are biased, as it's often the case that publications and television channels that are media partners of films and the reviewers have to maintain a warm relation with the filmmakers for other stories.

Sunny Deol is very upset with the way Subhash Ghai and his production house Mukta Arts have marketed Right Yaaa Wrong.
Says Sunny, "It was always a good film. Mukta Arts has not been fair to it. They've publicized it like a small producer would have. For a large production house they really didn't seem to know what to do with the film. It was all talk talk talk... There were so many meetings and so many plans. But nothing happened. I'm fed up of all this empty talk. Now I only want to work on projects with a clear plan of action."
Sunny feels Ghai was not interested in the film. "He didn't believe in Right Yaaa Wrong. And he was surrounded by advisers who were constantly trying to bisect and dissect the film. Filmmaking may be a team effort. But you can't have a team of people always providing inputs and advice. That only causes chaos and confusion. The film has to finally go by one man's vision. And that man is the director."
Apparently, Ghai didn't allow the director Neerraj Pathak to do his work. "At the end of the day it's his vision that determines the end-product. You've to let the director do his job. Fortunately or unfortunately, I'm not the kind of person who interferes beyond a point. I can't sit and talk talk talk. I'm a man of action."
Sunny accuses Ghai of releasing the film at the wrong time. "They kept saying they'd release the film at the right time. Finally they released it on the day the IPL matches started. How is that the right date? The truth is, they had lost interest in the film. But when they held trials people liked the film. Suddenly they decided to release it with haphazard publicity at a time when I'm shooting in Punjab. They were earlier supposed to release in December, then January...what was I supposed to do? Give up shooting and run around doing the publicity (for Right Yaaa Wrong) when they wanted me to? All big talk. The world is filled with big talkers."
Sighs Sunny, "It's a changed industry. Nothing works the way it used to. A few films click, and that's it. I'm not interested in any kind of politics. And the directors ...we need good directors. The directors we (the Deols) have given a break to have run away after working with us. Everyone is into their own kind of cinema, not necessarily sensible cinema."
Is Sunny talking about Raj Kumar Santoshi? "He was supposed to do a project with me again. I guess it wasn't meant to be. He will do films only where the economics are to his advantage. He doesn't have the b**ls to make the cinema he believes in unless the money is right. Who's doing the work they believe in? Imtiaz Ali made Socha Na Tha with our cousin Abhay Deol. Now that film is being remade over and over again in different packages. Anyway, if I was once bitten and twice shy I'd be called an emotional man. But if I was twice bitten and thrice shy then I'd be called a foolish man. Santoshi or anyone else makes films wherever there's money. What happened to creativity? I wonder! Filmmakers follow Friday trends."
Sunny's second film as director The Man has been delayed for some time. Explains Sunny, "There're many reasons for it. It's a big-budget film. We're trying to find buyers for it. The film is 50 percent complete."
Sunny is happy with the way their family film Yamla Pagla Deewana is shaping up. "It's a great story. And the film will rock. My dad, my brother and I are shooting in Punjab. They treat us like family here. As for my dad, nobody can reach the place where he is."
Sunny is very proud of his cousin Abhay Deol. "He has the guts to do the kind of cinema he believes. Just like all the other Deols."
On the other hand, Subhash Ghai reacts to Sunny's comments, "Mukta Arts is the worldright controllers and distributors of Right Yaaa Wrong. We weren't able to sell the film anywhere. There were no buyers. The set-up was not saleable. Our job was to give money for the film's making and therefore we were the most insecure people in the project. Sunny saab's reactions have to do with the way the film has been received .Why didn't he say all these things before release? I had gone to Sunny's home at least six times. We wanted to release it initially on November 30. But the stars, and I'm talking not just about Sunny but Irrfan, Konkona and Esha Koppikhar, had no time to promote the film. As far as my intervention in concerned, the director Neeraj Pathak himself came to me to ask for advice. I only advised him to increase the film's tempo. Is it a crime to give suggestions for a film where there're so many financial stakes? The film was started when there was a boom...big fruits were laden on the tree. When it was released the tree had dried up. All the cast and crew reaped the fruits. We the film's world financiers were left with no money. We sold the entire overseas territory for Rs. 20 lakhs. We spent Rs.1.5 crores on the publicity. But the actors were not available for the publicity. Sunny said he's too shy to do publicity. Look at Shah Rukh and Aamir how they promote their films. They hold their producers' hands and take them everywhere for a film's publicity. Instead of publicity for Right Yaaa Wrong, Sunny left for Punjab to shoot his film. Please don't blame Mukta Arts. Now why is Sunny getting agitated? He's a good boy. But he's innocent about the changing marketing strategy of cinema. Sunny needs to get real."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 17 Mar 2010 | 5:00 am Zeta-Jones wants to remake first film with DouglasHollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has expressed a desire for a remake of her first onscreen role with star husband Michael Douglas in 1989 black comedy War of the Roses.Source: | 17 Mar 2010 | 3:54 am Penelope Cruz on cloud ninePenelope Cruz is on cloud nine.
