Sunny Deol V/s Subhash Ghai: The two biggies engage in war of words

Sunny Deol is very upset with the way Subhash Ghai and his production house Mukta Arts have marketed Right Yaaa Wrong. Says Sunny, "It was always a good film. Mukta Arts has not been fair to it. They've publicized it like a small producer would have. For a large production house they really didn't seem to know what to do with the film. It was all talk talk talk... There were so many meetings and so many plans. But nothing happened. I'm fed up of all this empty talk. Now I only want to work on projects with a clear plan of action." Sunny feels Ghai was not interested in the film. "He didn't believe in Right Yaaa Wrong. And he was surrounded by advisers who were constantly trying to bisect and dissect the film. Filmmaking may be a team effort. But you can't have a team of people always providing inputs and advice. That only causes chaos and confusion. The film has to finally go by one man's vision. And that man is the director." Apparently, Ghai didn't allow the director Neerraj Pathak to do his work. "At the end of the day it's his vision that determines the end-product. You've to let the director do his job. Fortunately or unfortunately, I'm not the kind of person who interferes beyond a point. I can't sit and talk talk talk. I'm a man of action." Sunny accuses Ghai of releasing the film at the wrong time. "They kept saying they'd release the film at the right time. Finally they released it on the day the IPL matches started. How is that the right date? The truth is, they had lost interest in the film. But when they held trials people liked the film. Suddenly they decided to release it with haphazard publicity at a time when I'm shooting in Punjab. They were earlier supposed to release in December, then January...what was I supposed to do? Give up shooting and run around doing the publicity (for Right Yaaa Wrong) when they wanted me to? All big talk. The world is filled with big talkers." Sighs Sunny, "It's a changed industry. Nothing works the way it used to. A few films click, and that's it. I'm not interested in any kind of politics. And the directors ...we need good directors. The directors we (the Deols) have given a break to have run away after working with us. Everyone is into their own kind of cinema, not necessarily sensible cinema." Is Sunny talking about Raj Kumar Santoshi? "He was supposed to do a project with me again. I guess it wasn't meant to be. He will do films only where the economics are to his advantage. He doesn't have the b**ls to make the cinema he believes in unless the money is right. Who's doing the work they believe in? Imtiaz Ali made Socha Na Tha with our cousin Abhay Deol. Now that film is being remade over and over again in different packages. Anyway, if I was once bitten and twice shy I'd be called an emotional man. But if I was twice bitten and thrice shy then I'd be called a foolish man. Santoshi or anyone else makes films wherever there's money. What happened to creativity? I wonder! Filmmakers follow Friday trends." Sunny's second film as director The Man has been delayed for some time. Explains Sunny, "There're many reasons for it. It's a big-budget film. We're trying to find buyers for it. The film is 50 percent complete." Sunny is happy with the way their family film Yamla Pagla Deewana is shaping up. "It's a great story. And the film will rock. My dad, my brother and I are shooting in Punjab. They treat us like family here. As for my dad, nobody can reach the place where he is." Sunny is very proud of his cousin Abhay Deol. "He has the guts to do the kind of cinema he believes. Just like all the other Deols." On the other hand, Subhash Ghai reacts to Sunny's comments, "Mukta Arts is the worldright controllers and distributors of Right Yaaa Wrong. We weren't able to sell the film anywhere. There were no buyers. The set-up was not saleable. Our job was to give money for the film's making and therefore we were the most insecure people in the project. Sunny saab's reactions have to do with the way the film has been received .Why didn't he say all these things before release? I had gone to Sunny's home at least six times. We wanted to release it initially on November 30. But the stars, and I'm talking not just about Sunny but Irrfan, Konkona and Esha Koppikhar, had no time to promote the film. As far as my intervention in concerned, the director Neeraj Pathak himself came to me to ask for advice. I only advised him to increase the film's tempo. Is it a crime to give suggestions for a film where there're so many financial stakes? The film was started when there was a boom...big fruits were laden on the tree. When it was released the tree had dried up. All the cast and crew reaped the fruits. We the film's world financiers were left with no money. We sold the entire overseas territory for Rs. 20 lakhs. We spent Rs.1.5 crores on the publicity. But the actors were not available for the publicity. Sunny said he's too shy to do publicity. Look at Shah Rukh and Aamir how they promote their films. They hold their producers' hands and take them everywhere for a film's publicity. Instead of publicity for Right Yaaa Wrong, Sunny left for Punjab to shoot his film. Please don't blame Mukta Arts. Now why is Sunny getting agitated? He's a good boy. But he's innocent about the changing marketing strategy of cinema. Sunny needs to get real."

"Well Done Abba is one of the most challenging films I've done" - Boman Irani

Boman Irani They say that when actors reach their forties, they've either turned themselves into superstars or are thrown out of the business. But what would you call an actor who has got into the business of acting in his forties? What would you call an actor who has redefined the word superstar in his own right? And what would you call an actor who has won, not only critical acclaim and awards in his mid forties and fifties now, but has also won the respect, recognition and a rare grandiosity from his fellow co-stars? There's more! A rarity which makes this big man Boman come to tears when Dia Mirza once asked Irani to give her away to her future husband. We call it 'bidai'. A true father in every sense, Boman Irani is known amongst his female co-stars as 'Pops' or 'Abba'. The first time I met him in London, the actor came across as so effortlessly charming that you almost expect him to be carrying a briefcase full of vacuum cleaner parts to assemble and demonstrate. For me, he had perfected the salesman's patter, the direct eye contact, the firm but respectful handshake but yet an aristocrat who was sitting right next to me speaking effortless English like the Duke of Kent. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent talks to the father figure, the God Father and the respectful Boman Irani over the phone to know more about his love for cinema, love for his fellow co-stars, love for Shyam Benegal and Minissha Lamba and love for one of his most challenging roles in Well Done Abba. Didn't we say it's difficult to dislike a man like Boman Irani? After Dance India Dance show, everybody on Facebook and Twitter has started calling me 'Abba' Am I talking to a god father? Am I talking to a 'paa' which actresses can't get away with or am I talking to a man who is simple loved by the entire film fraternity for no rhyme or reason? No, no. What are you saying man? Dia Mirza is giving me a bad name (laughs). Seriously, I'm touched. Minissha calls me 'Abba' and after this Dance India Dance show, everybody on Facebook and Twitter has started calling me 'Abba' too. There is a lot of affection that is added to why these people call me 'Abba' or 'Pops' or more. This love keeps me going. What about the emotional factor Boman? We hear that Dia Mirza wanted you to do her 'Bidai' ceremony when she gets married in the near future? Yes, it is an emotional journey. It's not a small thing. I am giving away the girl for the wedding, a father who is giving away his daughter for the wedding. Its immense responsibility and respect involved in doing so and I accept it with great humility and am almost moved by it. Let me be really honest here. It's very moving and touching of Dia to address such a responsibility. Boman Irani Critics who've seen Shyam Benegal's Welcome to Sajjanpur say that Well Done Abba has turned out even better than his previous work. Yes, I think so too. Welcome to Sajjanpur was a lovely film too. But Shyam Benegal has taken this one to an all time high. You need to see it to believe it. We also hear that Well Done Abba isn't getting a theatrical release in the UK in spite of the film getting a standing ovation at last year's London Film Festival. It will happen in a week or two after it has released in India. Not as yet. Well Done Abba is one of the most challenging films I've done since a while It clearly indicated that either the overseas audiences do not want to watch Boman Irani and Minissha Lamba or a film like Well Done Abba... I do not agree with your statement. At the moment, we are concentrating on the theatrical release in India first because films like Well Done Abba need to be monitored well. I disagree with you that there isn't an audience for a cinema like this. Yes, there is. It isn't a trial and error strategy. Well Done Abba is a small film and I do believe that there will be a great response to it. People all over the world are craving for a good cinema to hit the theatres which is entertaining too. Well Done Abba falls in that domain. You've mentioned the word 'challenging' a lot of times when you've been speaking about Well Done Abba. Please elaborate. Well Done Abba is one of the most challenging films I've done since a while. Yes, it is because it's a Shyam Benegal film and audiences have never seen me in a portrayal like this before. You have to be on the top of your game to be ready to do a Shyam Benegal film. More so because it's a lead role. Secondly, it's a challenge because the role I portray of Armaan Ali is a very simple character. He is a driver and how to make the driver exciting enough was the tough task. Challenge is to make the driver more watchable. The situation that I was put into was challenging as Armaan Ali came out to be a larger than life person even though he was a driver. There isn't any heroic deed which I do but the fact that my role is an every man's role makes it interesting. Boman Irani When Indian cinema is venturing out into different cinema these days with films like Ishqiya, Paa, LSD, Road Movie, Dev D, etc, do you think there is a high scope of such films taking over our so called commercial pot boilers? Yes, I do so. You're right. I completely agree with you. On the flip side, if we say that such kind of films you just mentioned doesn't have any audience or commercial value, how can we explain the success of Khosla Ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry, A Wednesday, Page 3, etc. In fact, Welcome to Sajjanpur turned out to be UTV's most successful film last year. If there is no audience for a cinema like these, I'd like to believe that there isn't an audience for any kind of cinema. Munnabhai MBBS was a loser of a film when it opened. It turned out to be a cult film. Khosla Ka Ghosla was in the cans for three years after it was made. After its release, it turned out to be one of the most critically acclaimed films. Well Done Abba promises to deliver intelligence, entertainment and diverse cinema. Let's talk about the humorous side of Shyam Benegal When I started working with him, I didn't know about it myself. It is such a revelation to see a man like Shyam Benegal so full of ideas, has so much to say, he is always talking on the mike, and has a fun side to him after the pack up. When you meet him in social gatherings, he is simple and quiet. But at work, he is like an animal that is raring to go. He belongs on the sets and is hell bent on making cinema that I and you will enjoy. He isn't like an elderly statesman who tells people what and what not to do. That's one of the reasons why I came to London with him to promote Well Done Abba last year. He is a man with whom you want to desperately spend some time. Minissha is at her best in Well Done Abba Minissha Lamba is at her best ever in Well Done Abba. She is climbing the ladder of success slowly but surely. Are these the right statements to make? I think your statements are very accurate. I've worked with Minissha Lamba before in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd but this one is ten notches higher. It's unfair to say that Minissha Lamba is the surprise package of the film because that's where you're giving a back handed compliment. I truly feel that every actor learns and grows stronger and better by each passing film and Minissha is at her best in Well Done Abba. She is on the same run. She has a very big role in this film. It's a huge one actually because she is expected to deliver a performance of stature and she's done it. Everybody wants a piece of Boman Irani. Is Mr. Irani getting too delicious? How can you expect me to answer a question like this? (Laughs). I can't say, "Yeah yeah. I am hot right now. Come and have me". Come on man! Yes, you're right but I can't answer a difficult question like that. Yes, I am busy like a bee in Bollywood in my last six years. It's just that with each passing year I'd like to believe that I've grown as an actor, I'd like to grow my respectability and I'd like to be challenged a little more. That's what I want and that's what I am looking for. Boman Irani Sameer Dattani, the underdog. Is he not a one trip pony? He certainly isn't a one trip pony. No one is. When Mr. Shyam Benegal cast him, he was a learner. Today, he has passed out with flying colours. He is a young man and started out slowly. Well Done Abba has been a huge learning experience for Sameer. He has come out wiser, more confident and has learnt the craft of acting even better after doing a film like this. He is doing a Karan Johar film as we speak and that only shows growth for an actor. If directors are giving him time, I'm sure we should too give him time to prove himself. Well Done Abba in one word please. There can't be a word to describe a film like this. You're asking difficult questions here. Don't make me do that. I can speak volumes about this film but to speak in a nut shell about this film rather than one word, Well Done Abba is the best days of my life.

Priyanka in but no more Katrina, Deepika, Vidya and Anushka in JKSAH

Debutant director Milap Zaveri has been forced to drop his big plans of roping in a dozen odd big names from the industry in his feature film Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai. Till about a fortnight back, he had made his intentions very clear about getting Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan and Anushka Sharma for a shot or two in his 'alien love story'. It all seemed just perfect and apt as well since his film has a Bollywood background with Riteish Deshmukh playing an assistant director and Ruslaan Mumtaz enacting the role of a superstar. This is why; it wasn't difficult to justify the presence of numerous leading men, ladies and other filmmakers in Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai. However, as is the current situation today, Milap would have to be content with half his wish list turning out to be true and the reason behind this is an age old issue - date problem - something that has always shown its ugly side ever since the inception of Bollywood. "Really, all these women were so nice and supportive of me right from the time I had requested them to come on board. Verbally, there was an understanding that they would feature in the film. But then I was the man in hurry, though for all the right reasons. Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai goes for Censors this Friday and I had to get the final cut ready. I couldn't have afforded to delay that by waiting for any further shoot. Though everyone from Katrina and Deepika to Vidya and Anushka did assure me that they could be available at a later date, I couldn't have waited further. Ultimately, I had to let go", says Milap who is hurt due his shattered dream. Meanwhile, there was silver lining in the form of Priyanka Chopra who readily gave her shot for Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai soon after her return from US shoot of Anjaana Anjaani. Though it has just been a few days since she landed in Mumbai after a marathon shoot of her Siddharth Anand directed film, Priyanka was game to shoot for the guest appearance. "Isn't that fantastic? Now, I have at least half my wish been granted. Along with my beautiful alien (Jacqueline Fernandez) and the looser-in-love (Riteish Deshmukh), I have some great folks like Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Sajid Khan, Boman Irani and Amrita Rao as a part of my very first film. As for the rest (Katrina, Deepika, Vidya and Anushka), I will make sure that they are in the film's premier at least. By no means can I afford not to have them connected to Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai in some way or the other", smiles Milap. Also starring Ruslaan Mumtaz, Sonal Sehgal and Vishal Malhotra in principal roles, Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai has music by Sajid Wajid and lyrics by Sameer. Presented by Warner Bros and a co-production of Nikhil Advani and Mukesh Talreja, the film releases all over on 9th April.

Click above for event stills Touted as Asia's largest global convention on the business of entertainment for the past decade, FICCI FRAMES has returned in its 11th edition this year. It is being held over three days, from March 16 - 18. Here is an overview of the turn of events on Day 1. An illustrious inaugural session was held in the presence of high-profile dignitaries like - Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra, Shahrukh Khan, Karan Johar, Katrina Kaif, Harsh Mariwala and Louise Sams. The ceremony was followed by keynote addresses by Shah Rukh Khan and James Nicholas Gianopulos (Chairman and CEO, Fox Filmed Entertainment Ltd). While James shed light on the emerging scope of 3D technology and the importance of Fox's expertise in film distribution, Shahrukh stressed that Bollywood has a lot to learn from its 'experienced cousin - Hollywood' in order to bloom as a film industry. -  The inaugural session was also the platform for two book launches, The FICCI-KPMG Industry Report and the other on Entertainment Law. -  Issues raised on the dias by other dignitaries included the need to curb piracy and to gear up to celebrate the hundred years of Indian cinema in 2013. The inaugural session was followed by the following seminars, panel discussions and master class. Here's a list of the highlights: A keynote by Sir Martin Sorell (Chief Executive, WPP Group) on the changing trends of the advertising industry. Followed by a keynote by Nikesh Arora (President of Global Sales Operations and Business Development, Google Inc., USA), who spoke about the impact Google's Android and Nexus One will have on consumer behavior, tele communication and mobile content. A panel discussion on 'How real is Reality TV? How can one create winning content?' was moderated by Sidhharth Basu. The panel, consisting of television programming heads, managing directors and CEO's, shed light on the emerging trends in reality shows. The discussion drew comparisons between fiction and non-fiction content that lead to a debate whether soap operas are going to be a thing of past. The panel discussion 'Indian films going global: Can our films really crossover?' was thronged by a lot of delegates and lead to interesting discussions and revelations. Moderated by Karan Johar, the panel consisted of noted actors Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Irrfan Khan, Vijay Singh (CEO, Fox Star Studios India Pvt Ltd.) and Franck Priot (Deputy Director, Film France, The French Film Commission). While Rahul Bose was believed "Indian films will never crossover as the decision was always dictated by the producer's interests", Vijay was more optimistic, citing the success of My Name is Khan. Franck shared the tactics used by the French film industry to get their films noticed and also stressed on the importance of support from the government to get films to crossover. A highly specialized and rather serious discussion on the 'Innovations & growth in M&E sector: Digital and others' took place within a panel comprising of leaders of the digital media. The discussion was moderated by Marco Vernocchi (Global Managing Director, Media & Entertainment Practice, Accenture). The discussion brought forth the latest strategies being employed to generate content for the changing digital media platforms - particularly mobile devices and also efforts to contain piracy. The experts shared examples of recent success stories to paint an optimistic picture of the digital platform. A screenplay writing master class was conducted by renowned Hollywood screenwriter Stephen de Souza who shared a few tips that would help a writer refine his script. The session lead to a fairly long and interesting Q&A session, which many attendees found to be one of the most satisfactory sessions throughout the day. The evening concluded with a Networking Cocktails & Dinner event accompanied by entertainment that included a couple of fashion shows and dance performances.
