What will be Joaquin Phoenix’s first role after his return from self-imposed bearded strangeness? Edgar Allen Poe, of course, in a film adaptation of Daniel Stashower’s The Beautiful Cigar Girl, which seems to be appropriately dark.

The book weaves together the story of Mary Rogers, a clerk at a tobacco store frequented by popular writers who was found horribly mutilated in the Hudson River, and Edgar Allan Poe, who used the events surrounding Rogers' murder to pen his story "The Mystery of Marie Roget."

No word yet on which director will be rapping on Joaquin’s trailer door, or if Joaquin will be doing some rapping of his own for the film.

According to a new study men were more likely to sell stocks at the bottom of the market than women during the financial crisis, based on I.R.A. account activity in 2008-2009 at Vanguard, the mutual fund company. It's for the same reason that men have to ask women out on dates and never stop to ask for directions (and other universal truths about men and women).

“There’s been a lot of academic research suggesting that men think they know what they’re doing, even when they really don’t know what they’re doing,” said John Ameriks, head of Vanguard Investment Counseling and Research and a co-author of the study. Women, on the other hand, appear more likely to acknowledge when they don’t know something — like the direction of the stock market or of the price of a stock or a bond.

Men are also likely to trade more often than women, while women are simply more risk-averse. It all has to do with pornography and motherhood and the cave-man brain:

Researchers have found that activating the nucleus accumbens — a brain region that is stimulated when you eat delicious food or look at an attractive person — can affect financial risk-taking. When young Stanford men were shown pictures of partially clothed men and women kissing, he said, that region of their brains was activated. And when they were then given financial tests, the men became more likely to “make high-risk gambles.”

Before the dawn of history, aggressive risk-taking might have given men an advantage in finding mates, she said, while women might have become more risk-averse to protect their offspring.

Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel Elizabeth Warren doesn’t bat an eye at porn, and she certainly doesn't unload stock at the bottom of the market.

Click here to read 'Rep. Eric Massa Tickled His Staff. Is That Normal?'

Yes, Karl Rove once got a bloody nose from a girl in his neighborhood because of the Nixon sticker on his bicycle basket. And in the most recent excerpt from his memoir, Courage and Consequence, we see why he was so easy to pick on. He was a quirky little guy!

He found a like-minded group of peers on the debate team — "his tribe" — and learned to use research, color-coding, and references to esoteric political figures to crush his opponents.

For example, we were obsessive about preparation. We wanted better research and more of it than any of our competitors (a habit I still have to this day). We spent a small fortune on 4-by-6-inch cards on which we wrote our information in precise block lettering or typed it with a small manual typewriter we had scored at a secondhand sale. We then meticulously arranged the cards in giant boxes behind dividers that made possible the quick recovery of facts, quotes and authorities. I developed an elaborate color scheme to help us pluck just the right card at that special moment to confound the opposing pair of debaters.

His campaign for student assembly was also beyond sophisticated, which in high school means that he used jocks and “babes” to win the election.

As my name was announced over the sound system, we fired up a VW convertible, flung open the gym doors, and drove the bright Bug into the packed arena with a basketball hero in the front seat behind the wheel and me in the back waving to the crowd, flanked by two attractive girls ... a VW driving across the gym with the nerd in the back between two babes brought the students to their feet cheering and laughing and made my remarks almost unnecessary. I won.

To review: sticker on his bicycle basket, elaborate color schemes, and hot, platonic girl friends. We’re thinking it, but we won’t say it. Sorry you got beat up, Karl.

Mel Gibson and Bill Monahan, the screenwriter behind The Departed, are currently hammering away on what might be Gibson’s last film ever: a Viking epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

"I saw it in my mind back when I was teenager. Seriously, it’s the first movie I wanted to make. And I think it will be the last film I direct. It’s the thing I have been going toward, in a way, since I was young, and I think when it’s done I may be finished.”

Gibson cited the need for a Viking movie because “it’s something the audience hasn’t seen in a long time.” Over 50 years have passed since Kirk Douglas’s The Vikings, and apparently The Thirteenth Warrior doesn’t count because, well, it starred Antonio Banderas.

People close to Gibson brushed off the suggestion that this film would be his last. He's probably just taking a page from Brett Favre's playbook to make sure the film is extra, extra epic. Viking epic.

MTA Planning High-Speed Internet on Medium-Speed Metro-North and LIRR Trains

The MTA announced a scheme on Friday to bring high-speed Internet to passengers on Metro-North and LIRR trains, filing a request for proposals from private companies. The Authority doesn’t intend to spend any money installing or maintaining the high-speed access, and the company that wins the bid will get to decide if and how much passengers will have to pay. The plan is a micro-stimulus of sorts, allowing commuters to get more work hours into their days, but if this is any indication nobody really has to worry about that. [NYP via Gothamist]

MGMT Already Apologizing for New Sound

Congratulations is out April 13.

MGMT's Ben Goldwasser apologized for “Flash Delirium,” the first single to come out of the duo’s sophomore album, Congratulations. "When we first wrote that song, we were laughing so hard," Goldwasser said. “It's not a single, but we thought it was a good way to entice people to listen to the whole record. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think it's completely weird and not what they were expecting. I'm sorry." Apologizing for the first single doesn’t exactly bode well for the rest of the album. Violent Bathroom Beating After Dance-Floor Snub Ends in Arrest

Lafrem didn't speak to reporters.

The complete psycho who followed a woman into a bathroom at bar in Hell’s Kitchen to beat her and strip some of her clothing after she refused to dance with him minutes earlier is now in police custody. Mbarek Lafrem, a 30-year-old construction worker from Pennsylvania, was apprehended after a fellow construction worker identified Lafrem in a police surveillance video that was circulating on the news.

Video was captured of Lafrem leaving the bar shaking his hand in pain, ostensibly from this:

The victim, 29, a pediatric nurse at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, suffered a fractured nose, eye socket and skull and required 50 stitches to her face as a result of the assault.

Lafrem was also caught on tape stopping into a bodega to steal a beer later that night, hopefully his last ever. He is charged with two counts of assault and one count of attempted rape.

Focus in the capital will turn toward America’s children on Monday, when President Obama sends his blueprint for education reform to the Hill. Obama will aim to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which came to be known as No Child Left Behind in the Bush years. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan called Bush's policies "utopian."

"What this plan recognizes is that while the federal government can play a leading role in encouraging the reforms and high standards we need, the impetus for that change will come from states, and from local schools and school districts," Mr. Obama said during his weekly radio address. "So, yes, we set a high bar — but we also provide educators the flexibility to reach it."

Also on Monday, Michelle Obama will appear on the cover of Newsweek with an article, “My Fight Against Childhood Obesity.” The magazine ran a cover story about educational reform last week.
