What will be Joaquin Phoenix’s first role after his return from self-imposed bearded strangeness? Edgar Allen Poe, of course, in a film adaptation of Daniel Stashower’s The Beautiful Cigar Girl, which seems to be appropriately dark.
No word yet on which director will be rapping on Joaquin’s trailer door, or if Joaquin will be doing some rapping of his own for the film. According to a new study men were more likely to sell stocks at the bottom of the market than women during the financial crisis, based on I.R.A. account activity in 2008-2009 at Vanguard, the mutual fund company. It's for the same reason that men have to ask women out on dates and never stop to ask for directions (and other universal truths about men and women). “There’s been a lot of academic research suggesting that men think they know what they’re doing, even when they really don’t know what they’re doing,” said John Ameriks, head of Vanguard Investment Counseling and Research and a co-author of the study. Women, on the other hand, appear more likely to acknowledge when they don’t know something — like the direction of the stock market or of the price of a stock or a bond.
Researchers have found that activating the nucleus accumbens — a brain region that is stimulated when you eat delicious food or look at an attractive person — can affect financial risk-taking. When young Stanford men were shown pictures of partially clothed men and women kissing, he said, that region of their brains was activated. And when they were then given financial tests, the men became more likely to “make high-risk gambles.” Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel Elizabeth Warren doesn’t bat an eye at porn, and she certainly doesn't unload stock at the bottom of the market. Yes, Karl Rove once got a bloody nose from a girl in his neighborhood because of the Nixon sticker on his bicycle basket. And in the most recent excerpt from his memoir, Courage and Consequence, we see why he was so easy to pick on. He was a quirky little guy! He found a like-minded group of peers on the debate team — "his tribe" — and learned to use research, color-coding, and references to esoteric political figures to crush his opponents.
His campaign for student assembly was also beyond sophisticated, which in high school means that he used jocks and “babes” to win the election.
To review: sticker on his bicycle basket, elaborate color schemes, and hot, platonic girl friends. We’re thinking it, but we won’t say it. Sorry you got beat up, Karl. Mel Gibson and Bill Monahan, the screenwriter behind The Departed, are currently hammering away on what might be Gibson’s last film ever: a Viking epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Gibson cited the need for a Viking movie because “it’s something the audience hasn’t seen in a long time.” Over 50 years have passed since Kirk Douglas’s The Vikings, and apparently The Thirteenth Warrior doesn’t count because, well, it starred Antonio Banderas. People close to Gibson brushed off the suggestion that this film would be his last. He's probably just taking a page from Brett Favre's playbook to make sure the film is extra, extra epic. The Authority doesn’t intend to spend any money installing or maintaining the high-speed access, and the company that wins the bid will get to decide if and how much passengers will have to pay. The plan is a micro-stimulus of sorts, allowing commuters to get more work hours into their days, but if this is any indication nobody really has to worry about that.
