Bryan Adams' most popular song went '18 till I die'. A statement that serves true for our very own Bollywood's talent house Aamir Khan, who till date can carry of the role of a college student with just as much ease as he did in his teen years in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. It's as if age surpasses him with each passing year. He has not only grown in years, the man has grown in talent too.
There is none like any him in our industry yet he humbly refuses any flattering title one might wish to give him. He is popularly known to do only one film a year and the kind that every fan of his waits with bated breath. His work is nothing short of a masterpiece but this perfectionist self is never satisfied. His zest to do better has made him a benchmark for quality in our industry, and Bollywood Hungama would take this opportunity to wish this phenomenon called Aamir Khan a very happy birthday. Aamir Khan's intellect is not a facade he puts on for his films but he is truly a man who knows exactly what he's talking about in all seriousness. To validate that is the fact that he has been invited to a highly prestigious summit in New Delhi today- the 13th March with none other than the esteemed Oscar Winning director James Cameron.
The Summit is being held on the subject of Reality v/s Idealism and will also see young Bollywood actors Asin and Ranbir Kapoor who would be the voice of the Youth of Bollywood. Asin would be speaking on how the youth can break free and think out of the box to bring change in a country that is much in need of it.
The two young stars will also be attending the exclusive gala dinner which will be addressed by James Cameron and Aamir and what makes all of this extremely special is the fact that only a select few personalities have been invited to this summit and dinner. Aamir in fact would also have the opportunity of bringing in his 45th birthday in the presence of stalwarts like James Cameron. Must say this is one occasion the actor isn't likely to forget in a long, long time.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 13 Mar 2010 | 5:29 am Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards win Indian RazziesStallone and Richards were not present at the gala, which was held in India's capital New Delhi on Friday night. First theatrical promo of Housefull is out and undoubtedly, it has got to an all around positive response. While the makers have done well by amalgamating class with mass in the First Look, they have also smartly integrated a shot from the film which features the three leading ladies - Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta and Jiah Khan - in a two piece bikini.
While the film does appear to be a good family entertainer in the offering, director Sajid and Co. have also proudly declared that Housefull will be Akshay Kumar's biggest opening film ever. Still, one can't help but pop a question - Was the bikini scene really crucial to the film? Also, was that integrated in the film so that recovering money becomes faster for its makers?'
"Housefull is certainly not dependant on the bikini factor to help it recover money", comes an outright denial from Sajid, "Yes, all my leading ladies are seen in bikinis as part of the song, but on a beach resort you don't expect them to come out of the ocean wearing salwaar-kameez. Also the way it has been shot is aesthetic and not vulgar by any means. Moreover, it has been choreographed by Farah who is known for her class treatment."
But still, there is a definite sex element that comes in! One wonders what made Sajid opt for it when during Heyy Babyy, he had clearly stated that he would never resort to any gimmicks or sex angle?
"You have to differentiate between something looking sexy v/s some one used as a sex object from the selling perspective", Sajid explains his point of view here, "In fact throughout it's narrative, Housefull doesn't have a single second of vulgarity in it."
Going back in the past, Sajid adds, "Same was the case with Heyy Babyy even though the film did have its share of hotness. It was required because the plot was set in Sydney and revolved around three bachelor friends for whom the only time pass was sleeping around. Still, family audiences went to watch the film and so would be the case with Housefull as well."
Well, one looks forward to that happening, with or without the bikini scene. With Housefull being the biggest entertainer in the offering soon after the conclusion of IPL, one can well expect Bollywood starved audience to hop into theaters and watch this Sajid Nadiadwala production that stars Akshay Kumar in lead along with Riteish Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani, Chunky Pandey and Randhir Kapoor. With music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Housefull releases all over on 30th April.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 13 Mar 2010 | 3:13 am Subhash K. Jha talks about Hide & Seek
So whodunit? Put a bunch of assorted dysfunctional men and women into a shopping mall, not to shop, but to get bumped off. And voila, the whodunit takes the characters to shop until they drop, one by one.
There's a Santa Claus with a hatchet in hand running around the deathly-still, sparkling -clean, spotless and eerily blood-thirsty mall. By jove! The polished surfaces of the mall glisten with a glorious promise of gore. This, we've got to see.
Luckily the unravelling of the mystery of the murderous mall is not a disappointment Hide & Seek packs in a punch.
Srikant Saroj's camera stalks the corridors with a restless energy. The whole project seems to have been conceived and designed so that an emptied-out shopping mall could be used as a venue for some hardcore scares. Hide & Seek offers a terrain of mild terror, more in the thought (dark empty mall, no exit) than execution.
Once the sextet of helter-skelter friends-turned-enemies is clamped shut in the lap of shivery luxury the plot thickens in rapid fire motions. The characters include a North-Indian- hating Marathi politician (ahem) played rather loudly by Arjan Bajwa and a nerd turned beefy film star played by Ayaz Khan, who create a stifling circle of tension, some of it palpable, others, pale.
On the whole, the mayhem-in-the-mall holds together, generating a mix of the hazy crazy and sometimes just the lazy.
On occasions the characters are driven into postures of terror more by exterior forces (scared people running in an empty mall is a great turn-on) rather than by a genuine sense of plotting urgency. The most heart-in-the-mouth moments feature debutante Amruta Patki caught alone in a movie theatre and later cowering in a ladies toilet as Santa With The Axe('axe' no questions he tells no lies) stalks her down the squeaky-cleanwashroom.
So what's Hide & Seek really about? Is it about 6 'high' school friends (everyone is high on some unnamed drug or the other) who once got caught in a party plastered with jealousy intrigue rape and murder? Or is it just mayhem in a mall caught on camera that knows how to zig-zag through the serpentine corridors without knocking into hard surfaces?
Either way the film offers interesting possibilities of high anxiety. Debutant director Shawn Arranha displays skill and control in a way the individually aggravated characters are kept in check when they come into contact with one another. The performances are enthusiastic, Purab Kohli being particularly interesting to watch as a mentally disturbed young man who thinks love is just a wish away.
Some of the acting does get over-the-top although the director seems to avoid excess as much as he can in a film belonging to genre where gore is glory.
Grant the film a few extra points for inventiveness. Also for a slasher movie the slash-and-maim quotient is minimal. And the end-game where we the audience are played with as much wicked relish as the characters, is the kind of twist amateur whodunits revel in.
For an evening of chills this one is sufficiently equipped. But don't look for much more in the haunted shopping mall than meets the eye.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 13 Mar 2010 | 3:12 am "Amelia could've been up for at least 5 Oscar nominations" - Mira Nair
Mira is mutedly miffed about how her latest release the ambitious Amelia about the first woman pilot, was handled by its distributors Fox Searchlight. "Yes, the film could've been up for at least 5 Oscar nominations. But my distributors had other bigger films to look into."
Mira admits the reviews for Amelia in the US were unfavorable. "Except for some publications like Hollywood Reporter, the reviews were pretty harsh. I guess it was partly a territorial thing. When as an Indian abroad I make a Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding or The Namesake, the international critics accepts them warmly and wholeheartedly. But when I do what's normally considered a big Hollywood film it becomes a matter of territorial suspicion in the West."
Mira says Amelia was a tough film to make. "We had to go back and recreate the era to which Amelia Earhart belonged. The planes she flew had to be authentic. We had to get actual planes of the kind that Amelia flew in the 1930s. Was this the toughest film I've made? Not really. Vanity Fair, Salaam Bombay or Moonsoon Wedding were equally challenging. In Amelia, I wanted generate an adrenaline-rush for the audience as though they were sitting in the cockpit with Amelia."
Hillary Swank plays the lead. "She's amazing!" sighs Mira. "A fantastic actress. She has an uncanny resemblance to the original character. I mean she could've been Amelia Earhart. I didn't pick her. The producers picked her. The project came to me with her already on broad."
Amelia is Mira's biggest film to date. "A true epic in scope. We're shooting around the world. It's about Amelia Eahart who pretty much pioneered aviatrix. It starts in the earlier years of aviation. My film goes from the 1920s to 1937 when she did her final flight around the world and ultimately disappeared."
Mira recorded the background score for Amelia in London. "It's been done at the Abbey Studios by Gabriel Yared who did The English Patient and so on. It's such an exhilarating experience to work with such amazing talent."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 13 Mar 2010 | 3:11 am "Tarantino asked me lot of questions about Indian cinema" - Resul Pookutty
Resul expresses a sense of disappointment about the experience of attending the Oscars for the second time. "I realized unless you're nominated there's no fun in attending the Oscars. This time I was just a spectator and to that extent I got to meet a lot of interesting people including the best-actress and best-director winners Sandra Bullock and Katheryn Bigelow who were absolutely charming."
Clearly the highlight of the evening for Resul was to meet Quentin Tarantino. "I am an absolute fan. And I had to tell him how I liked his Inglourious Basterds. When I spoke to him Quentin turned out to be a great guy with a warm sense of humour. He asked me a lot of questions about my work and Indian cinema."
To his surprise Resul was recognized at the Oscars this year as the guy who did the sound for Slumdog Millionaire.
Says Resul, "A year has passed. But the impact of Slumdog at the Oscars lingered even this year. That maybe because no film this year did a clean sweep at the Oscars like Slumdog did last year."
On Friday Resul left for Oman where he and the Big B were going to honoured by the government.
Behind the much-publicized visit to the Oscars this week the maverick sound recordist Resul Pookutty had a far bigger mission to accomplish.
On Wednesday Resul closed the deal for his second major international film after Slumdog Millionaire which is a film starring the hot and saleable Joaquin Phoenix of Walk The Line and Gladiator fame.
Speaking from Manhattan New York on Thursday morning Resul could barely contain his excitement. "It's my second international film after Slumdog. It is an honour. I couldn't he happier because I am doing a period film. It is a very special challenge because I've to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854."
Throwing more light on the project Resul says, "It's an adaptation of a haunting thriller entitled The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower. It is based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allen Poe which happened just months before his death. Joaquin Phoenix plays Edgar Allen Poe."
The film to be directed by Henry Miller will be shot in the US this summer and Resul needs to wrap up all his work in India before he devotes three months to the project.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 13 Mar 2010 | 2:31 am Kareena Kapoor too tied up for TwitterIt has been a wonder for the people from the industry as well as fans that even though a majority of Bollywood is on Twitter, Kareena Kapoor continues to evade the microblogging site.At Shahrukh Khan’s press conference for Ra.1, she wasSource: Oneindia.in - Entertainment | 13 Mar 2010 | 2:11 am Harman, Kareena named worst actors at Golden Kela awardsBollywood actor Harman Baweja was named worst actor and Kareena Kapoor got the worst actress title on Friday night at the second annual Golden Kela awards, a spin-off on Hollywood's Razzies.Source: Entertainment News | 13 Mar 2010 | 1:50 am "Yes, I am single" - Amruta PatkiIn this year's release Chance Pe Dance, Shahid Kapoor's character was shown as a struggler who doesn't have enough money to decide about his next meal. Coming April would see Jacqueline opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt spreading the 'Wow! The story goes that the ad filmmaker of Pepsi commercial had Ranbir and Sanju baba in tow but was on a lookout for a face that is not only fresh but compliments Ranbir and adds the much needed glam factor to the commercial. Nikhil Advani being a good friend of the ad filmmaker showed some promotional videos and scenes of his upcoming production Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai. Says a source, "The makers were blown away by Jackie and insisted that they wanted her in the ad." So convinced were they about Jackie that when the dates of the commercial and the promotional video of the film were clashing, the makers adjusted their dates to suit Jacqueline's.
