Scott Rudin is producing at Sony, with screenwriter Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List, American Gangster) adapting the novel. Though a deal hasn’t been made, insiders tell us that Sony brass are delighted with the work Fincher has done on The Social Network, the Aaron Sorkin adaptation of Ben Mezrich's book about Facebook's founders. Meanwhile, the Larsson project has Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan on its wish list, although nearly every other A-list actress in town is Googling "Asperger's" and calling her agent in an effort to land the role of Lisbeth Salander, the lead character with "hair as short as a fuse" whose genius for computer hacking is matched only by her social awkwardness. Long-term installation at Dia Center for the Arts, New York City. September 2000-June 2004 With nary a whimper, an era will come to an end tonight. At 11:59 p.m., the elegantly utilitarian redbrick building at 548 West 22nd Street, the former home of the Dia Foundation for the Arts, will lock its doors. Most likely, it will never be an art space again. In a city with so little first-rate institutional exhibition space, and so much bad space, this building’s near-perfect 36,000 square feet will be dearly missed. Especially because there will always be the terrible feeling that it didn’t have to be this way — that institutional hubris, shortsightedness, and mismanagement created this sad situation. The closing is the grim symbol of a deeply misguided expansion era for many museums, one that is only now ending. The building on 22nd Street is a special case. For one thing, it was the very first gallery in Chelsea. (Today, there are more than 200.) Opened as the Dia Center for the Arts in October 1987, it began life with three spectacular shows of the German artists Joseph Beuys, Blinky Palermo, and Imi Knoebel. Dia was the brainchild of a visionary German art dealer, Heiner Friedrich, and his wife, Philippa de Menil. Dia hadn’t originally been meant to have an exhibition space in New York at all — it had, up until then, spent millions on spectacular projects like Walter De Maria’s Lightning Field in New Mexico. It helped Donald Judd buy a 340-acre former U.S. Army post in Marfa, Texas, where he created a private museum for his own work and that of several other artists he admired. Then in 2004, when the art business had never been more flush with money, disaster struck. A year after opening its gigantic new exhibition facilities in Beacon, intended to house a generation of artists like Judd, Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, and Richard Serra, Dia shut down the 22nd Street building. The decision came out of the blue. Nobody’s ever made it clear exactly why; the official line was that the building was unsuited to the large number of visitors it was drawing. It all happened fast, so there was no “Save Dia” initiative, no protest, no controversy. Nothing. It just closed. Michael Govan, then Dia Director and now in charge of the Los Angeles Museum of Art, was the man who made the decision. Losing the miracle that was 22nd Street cut to the heart of the art world. Even those still associated with Dia tell me — privately, on background — that they feel pain every time they see or think of it. Many people share those feelings. After the closing, the 22nd Street building sat vacant for years. It was sold to real-estate investors, its fate unclear. But then art came back to 548 West 22nd, albeit briefly. In 2009, a handful of intrepid art-worlders, including gallerist Elizabeth Dee and curator Cecilia Alemani, approached the developers, scraped together money to lease it, and reopened the building last March to house a project called the X Initiative. They presented twelve exhibitions and more than 50 events. More than 75,000 visitors attended. No one knows what the current plans for the building are. Looking on the bright side, Dia recently announced that it has secured the space directly across from its former home, and it is getting ready to erect a new building there of around 48,000 square feet. With luck this space will be a new beginning. Until then, spare a thought for 548 West 22nd Street. It’s a rare building that gets to change both the entire art world and an entire city neighborhood. Source: E! Online (US) - Top Stories | 12 Mar 2010 | 4:30 pm Your Taxi Driver Is Probably Stealing From You![]() Unless you are of the especially anal variety, you probably don't spend your cab rides closely scrutinizing the meter. Perhaps you're distracted by the repetitive offerings of Taxi TV, or maybe you're just concentrating all your efforts on not booting all over the place. Taxi drivers know this, apparently, which is why they've been conning the hell out of you for God knows how many years probably forever. See, a few weeks ago, one cabbie was fingered by the taxi authorities for repeatedly charging higher out-of-city rates for intra-city trips, to the tune of $40,000 extra dollars. Someone at the Taxi and Limousine Commission probably realized that this couldn't be the only guy pulling this scam. So they undertook a fleetwide review, and the results should make you mildly irate: "35,558 hacks overcharged their passengers at least once," but "about 3,000 drivers were repeat offenders, switching their meters to the higher out-of-city rate on trips within city limits more than 100 times each." Mind you that this is only for a 26-month period analyzed by investigators. There's no reason to believe cabbies haven't been pulling this same ruse since the dawn of time. And it's only because of those mandatory GPS devices that their scheme was uncovered. No wonder they fought so hard against it. 36,000 city cabbies overcharged passengers by $8.3M in widespread meter scam [NYDN] Read more posts by Dan Amira Filed Under: jerks, schemes, taxis Source: Daily Intel | 12 Mar 2010 | 4:24 pm What Would You Do If You Won $1 Million on “Antiques Roadshow”?Antiques Roadshow has long been one of the best shows on TV, and DEFINITELY on PBS. So does Donna Karan. Frankly, she thinks the entire system should be changed and that the public is ready for it. "I hate to say it, somebody’s got to take the leap of faith and deal with the June, July market," she told WWD. "Pre-fall shouldn’t exist, I’m sorry. Wrong. Let’s start there. We’ve got to bring clothes into season." Wait, no pre-fall? Whatever would we do without that ... sort of made-up season? According to Donna, we'd fold it into fall, and the rollout for merchandise would actually be when customers are shopping for fall items. That actually makes sense. Huh. The root of this problem, Donna contends, is that we're overloaded. We have too much staring at us, kind of like how we're all eating too much. You eat all of the food, more, more, more, more and more. It’s an abundance of nausea. It’s too, too much until pop! It’s going to pop. All of this stuff, stuff, stuff, stuff; it’s going to obliterate each other. The whole thing has to be rethought, completely.
Resort? I believe there should be a separate going-away area in each store. Take a part of a store and create that energy. But don’t make the whole store into shorts and sandals when it’s snowing out. The consumer already told me that doesn’t work because the most successful product we did for resort are cashmere sweaters — wear-now.
Resort screwed up spring. And then pre-fall screwed up spring. Everything screwed spring up. Spring got sort of caged out. I’m saying to reinvent spring again, reinvent fall again, reinvent the season we’re designing for.

His latest, Mother, is a thriller about a mother who becomes obsessed with proving her somewhat slow, grown-up son’s innocence after he’s accused of a grisly crime. Like The Host, it’s a film that manages to takes its story in strange, surreal directions even while satisfying on a purely genre level. As such, it also recalls Bong’s 2003 film Memories of Murder, which first put him on the map of the international festival circuit. Mother, however, is a leap forward for the filmmaker, in its expansive ability to juggle thriller, drama, and comedy, while offering a remarkably sensitive character study; the titular performance, by the veteran Korean actress Kim Hye-ja, runs through a stunning range of emotions before the film’s impossibly haunting finale. Bong sat down with us during last year’s New York Film Festival to discuss his latest masterpiece, his fondness for genre, and what he thinks about an American Host remake. Even though Mother goes in some very strange directions, it still manages to work as a genre piece. How do you strike that balance? The incident set off a round of speculation that landed on, of all people, David freaking Geffen. Personally, we were outraged. At the delivery of the information, which in itself seemed a naked publicity ploy for an album that otherwise, let's face it, no one would care about, but also because as far as big reveals went, finding out one of the world's greatest love songs was written for a foppish music executive was more disappointing than finding out that Thomas Pynchon is just a regular ol' Zabar's customer. But then! Carly denied that Geffen was the David mentioned at all. "Someone got a clue mistaken for another mistake!," she said, cryptically. And now, she has told Vanity Fair whose name she did whisper. "I said “Ovid” [emphasis ours] both front- and backward together on the CD, and it came out sounding like “David’ to some, I guess. But I meant it as an allusion to metamorphosis, and that this group of songs was rechanneled into a different cockroach. Kafka? Coffee? Clouds? I know it’s boring, but that could be good!"

Jay Baruchel may best be known as the tall, skinny dude in Judd Apatow’s posse (he starred in Undeclared and Knocked Up), but the majority of his career has actually taken place outside Apatow-dom. Baruchel, an Ottawa native who still lives in Montreal, started acting at 12, starring on Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark and Canadian series My Hometown; since then, he’s kept busy playing everything from a confused young actor in Tropic Thunder to a spectacularly obnoxious bully in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. None of that likely prepared him for his most recent role in She’s Out of My League, an American Pie–esque comedy in which he plays Kirk Kettner, an airport security man (considered a “5” on the looks scale) who somehow ends up with a hot blonde who loves him. Baruchel spoke to Vulture about hanging with Nicolas Cage and what it’s like to be labeled a “5” on posters around the country. So, I’m curious as to how this movie was sold to you. “We need a slightly unattractive, but also kinda attractive guy, and you’re our man!”? Listen to this: Hong Kong-bound Continental Flight 99, a twin-engine Boeing 777 with 301 aboard, was 300 feet up at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when it smacked into a gaggle of about 10 Canada geese, aviation sources told The Post. The pilot told controllers the geese hit the left wing of the craft, which was fully loaded with fuel for the 16-hour flight. "He said the whole left side of the aircraft was banged up, the wing got hit, and possibly an engine," said Ray Adams, a Newark air-traffic controller on duty at the time of the incident.
The Boeing circled at least four times around Exit 8 near Old Bridge and Hightstown during the fuel dump — leaving passengers with little to do but pray for their safety while the pilots went about their preparations. "It was a whole flocking family of geese," Scott said. "Members of the flight crew, who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the incident, said they had seen a single-goose strike before. Never a flock."

Apparently, Facebook posts planning the bum-rush were seen by the police and 1,500 officers were sent to monitor the event. Then, while Metallica rocked without incident, things outside got hectic, with the police using water hoses and tear gas, and the rioters responding by taking apart a wall for more effective brick-throwing. Over 160 arrests were made and eight people, including four cops, were injured. While Vulture hopes everyone makes a full, speedy recovery and is very explicitly anti-riot, we can’t but help but wonder if some metalhead Colombian 12-year-old just had the best night of his life. By now it should be clear to all that our nation's politicians are among the horniest creatures on earth. If they're not cheating on their wives, they're hitting on pages or tickling staffers. With this is mind, two potential candidates for political office this year, madam Kristin Davis and adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, should probably fit right in. In fact, candidates with professional sexperience be they prostitutes or porn stars are nothing new in American elections. They're usually wildly unsuccessful, but hey, it makes things a little more interesting at least, right? A couple of nights ago, Jose Peralta, the Democratic nominee for Hiram Monserrate's former State Senate seat, told a Queens gay group that if they can't get him elected next week, well, they're probably never going to get married. “If we are not victorious on March 16 then everybody will sort of fill up their chests and say it was a lot of hot air,” Peralta said, referring to the vow of gay-rights groups to punish Democrats, such as Monserrate, who voted against the same-sex marriage bill. “I think that’s why March 16 is the litmus test.” Right if a guy with the backing of the entire Democratic establishment can't figure out a way to defeat a disgraced alleged girlfriend-slasher, it's the gays' fault. Anyway, it's really a moot point since a new Siena poll out today shows Peralta with a commanding 60–15 lead over Monserrate. (Phew.) Source: Yahoo! News: Entertainment News | 12 Mar 2010 | 12:47 pm The Project Runway Designers Channel the Elements![]() This week on Project Runway, the designers had to create a look inspired by one of the four natural elements — earth, fire, water, or air. There are only eight contestants left, thank God, as now we actually know who’s who, and each person is becoming a distinct personality. Take Amy, quiet but super-competitive, or Ben, sweet and devoted to his handsome hubby. Actually, it’s kind of remarkable how nice the entire bunch is. Sure, Maya’s pretty annoying, but she’s definitely not vindictive; there’s really no villain this year. As Jay put it: “We’re like the Victoria's Secret Wonder Bra — we lifted each other up.” Ah, spoken like a true gay man, associating bras with support, as opposed to, you know, breasts. This week is the “Garnier Challenge,” yet another nonsensical promotional tie-in, which has nothing more to do with hair than any other challenge we’ve seen. We’re going to stop harping on this stuff, because it’s pointless to complain. Project Runway will never be the same show as it was on Bravo. There, we said it, and now we can all move on with our lives. So the designers have different elements to interpret (Jonathan’s “Air is laughter” wins the award for most, um, creative), and everyone decides to GO ALL OUT and create THE GREATEST element-inspired dress ever known to man. Which basically means they all almost run out of time. Amy ends up screwing herself with ambition, creating a black rain-bucket jumpsuit, which we’ll break down more in the slideshow. It was a noble effort, and she gets points for trying, but: not good, Amy. Not good. The guest judge this week is Roland Mouret, an actual contemporary designer, whose "RM" line is a celebrity favorite. He has the best stink eye, reminds us of Pepé Le Pew, and is generally hilarious. On to the runway show, where we’re dazzled by earth, wind, and fire, but, unfortunately, none of its fun disco songs. Knowles in her stiffest performance yet. But why let Beyonce ruin what could possibly be the best female prison product placement commercial of modern times? If you think that opening the video up in a women’s prison with Gaga writhing around behind bars while in the nude in between making out with the other lady inmates seems cutting edge, let the numerous product placements throughout assure you that, no, in fact, it’s just one long lady-loving infomersh. From Virgin Mobile to Diet Coke, from Wonderbread to Polaroid to Miracle Whip (seriously?) (yes.), even Q-Tarantino’s Pussywagon gets an appearance. Thankfully, Queer Eye’s Jai Rodriguez also gets to product place his face as a local newsanchor. Gaga says the video was inspired by Tarantino, but it ends up feeling like a poor imitation. Love the girl, but between the ads and Beyonce, we fear this “Telephone” video may have been a slight misstep in an otherwise fabulous run. Language and “adult situations” might not be safe for work, unless you’re a female prison guard, in which case congratulations, this is your time in the sun, soak it up!
