Tough times bring out the best

Wage freezes and the threat of redundancies may have made the workplace a more daunting place in the past 12 months, but employees in the Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For have shown they still have time to think of others. For the first time, overall staff satisfaction ratings at the top employers in Britain have fallen, but the single area in which scores in our survey have risen is for how these firms engage with charities, the environment and their communities.

Forgiven debt sometimes isn't taxed as income

Also: How canceling a card dings credit, and which online FICO score is right?

Dear Liz: I lost my job 18 months ago. I am 61 and have back pain that keeps me from standing more than 15 minutes or sitting more than two hours before I have to lie down, which limits my job prospects. I arranged a short sale of my home a year ago to avoid a foreclosure, and recently received a 1099-C form from the lender for $99,000 of forgiven debt. Please warn others about this!

A big year for generous tax breaks from Uncle Sam

Rule changes for filers can dramatically affect your return, but they come with caveats.

Tax season usually leaves Americans grumbling, but you might have a few things to smile about this year, thanks to a bout of generosity from your dear old Uncle Sam. ¶ Desperate to kick-start the sputtering economy, Congress last year passed a stimulus bill that threw money at anyone willing to buy homes, cars, solar water heaters, energy-efficient air conditioners, refrigerators -- even golf carts. ¶ Why? Consumer spending is believed to account for about two-thirds of economic growth, so legislators were giving Americans reasons to spend. ¶ Add expanded credits for financing college, better breaks for casualty losses and charity, and you've got the makings of a great year for tax filers. ¶ The trick will be finding the credits and dealing with the rapid-fire changes that have even tax experts flummoxed.
