Freida Pinto to play Greek priestess in Tarsem Singh's War of The Gods

Ever since she made her debut with the film Slumdog Millionaire, Freida has been creating waves from the film's victory at the Oscars, to her being signed on for Woody Allen's next. She is certainly going places. However, the latest news is that Freida has been signed on for yet another Hollywood film War of The Gods. While Freida has completed her shooting Woody Allen's You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger opposite Josh Brolin and Naomi Watts, and Israeli film Miral, which has been directed by Julian Schnabel, she will be working in War of The Gods which is based on Greek mythology and will be directed by Tarsem Singh. It begins production in April. The story revolves around the warrior Theseus, who leads his men into battle with the Greek gods to defeat evil and the other elder gods in order to save mankind. Freida who plays a Greek priestess in the film, portrays Phaedra, an oracle priestess who joins Theseus, to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting. The film which is scheduled to go on floors this April is being produced by Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang Prods, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment and Relativity topper Ryan Kavanaugh.

April 9, release date of JKSAH, is lucky for Milap and Riteish

6 years ago, on April 9, 2004, Riteish Deshmukh delivered the first hit of his career- Masti. While the film was directed by Indra Kumar, Milap Zaveri was the man behind the story, screenplay and funny dialogues of the film. Now exactly six years later, Milap Zaveri makes his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai starring Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles and as luck would have, it the film releases on the same date April 9. Milap, who is eagerly awaiting the response to his maiden directorial venture, hopes that history repeats itself. "Riteish and my first hit as a team was Masti which released on the 9th of April. Now, 6 years later, once again we have our film Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai releasing on the same date. For us, 9th April is a really lucky date and we hope that history repeats itself yet again on this date." Looks like Milap and Riteish have taken luck on their side and hopefully, it'll do the trick for Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai.

"Crook is based on racial discrimination" - Mohit Suri

The Bhatts have been known to make films that revolve around social issues. With new blood in terms of the young director Mohit Suri, they promised to instil their films with views that have changed over time. Mohit, who is currently shooting for his next film Crook which stars Emraan Hashmi and newcomer Neha Sharma, chatted with Bollywood Hungama about the film. He also explains why the content borders on sending out a social message. Read on to know more. What is the film Crook all about? Well, Crook is basically about this guy who constantly looks for better prospects abroad and wants to go there. It's based on what's happening in Australia and how he manages to cope with the situation once there. It encompasses the new trend that western nations are the place to go for a new job and also to make your life, and such other situations. There is a lot of drama et al, with the protagonist taking a stand against some racial issues that the film is based on, but in the end if you look at it closely there is also a love story angle twisted into the plot. But still I wouldn't say that there is any kind of social message in the film as there is no solution to this nor have we come up with one as yet. Crook is based on the racial discrimination happening in Australia with a love story I the background. Why Emraan? I guess Emraan was my first and only choice for the film's lead actor, the reason behind this is that I have always said that the two of us share a good camaraderie since we almost grew up together. We quite literally understand each others point of view and thinking process. He's a great asset to me as a director and I seek his help when needed the most. Who is playing the female lead opposite Emraan in the film? For the lead actress, we settled on Neha Sharma, she's basically from the south and has done a couple of films out there but in terms of Bollywood or rather Hindi language cinema, this is going to be her debut vehicle. Neha Sharma, who will be making her Hindi language film debut is paired opposite Emraan. What's Emraan's character like in the film? Emraan as I said plays the main protagonist in the film; he plays this guy who's based in Mumbai, who thinks that the best way to make it in life is to head west. With this in mind he ventures to Australia. He is also the kind of person who doesn't mind cutting corners and stepping on people toes so long as it takes him ahead. He even goes so far as to cheat and get into underhand dealings to progress. As the film is based on what's happening in terms of racial discrimination there, it's about how the protagonist copes with the situation and takes a stand in the film. Most of the film will be shot in Melbourne and Mumbai as these are the places where everything is happening. Where all are you planning to shoot the film? We were and are doing the recce of the film here in Cape Town. While I have already settled for Melbourne as that's where the entire heart of the problem was, here in Cape Town I am shooting some action bits of the film and yes of course in Mumbai. Basically Melbourne and Mumbai is where the film is based, that's where the main protagonist spends most of his time and most of the shooting is also done here. So, when are you looking at releasing the film? Most of the film will be shot in Melbourne and Mumbai as these are the places where everything is happening. In fact I am looking at wrapping the entire shoot schedule by May, because I shoot non-stop. So latest that it will go on till is the end of June. However, once the post production work is done I don't like to indulge into the deciding of the release dates and promotion of the film. For that I leave it to the Bhatts. I think that the producers of the film are the best judge to decide about the where, when and why of a film's release. Who is doing the music of Crook? For Crook, we have Pritam doing the music of the film. This time however there is a bit of Punjabi tadka to it. This in itself is something really new for me as I have never really done Punjabi music in any of my films and I haven't done the entire hip hop mixed with Punjabi variation before. In Crook, in terms of the music, I am trying to mix the UK artists with the traditional Mumbai artists, so I am trying something totally new and different. What's your schedule like for this year? Planning any other film after Crook? I can't tell you right now, because I am the kind of person who works on one thing at a time. So right now I am doing Crook and I like to focus my entire attention on doing it, so others will just have to wait.

Arshad Warsi to get Rs. 3 crores for Golmaal 3?

He's in. He's out. He's finally....in! After the producers Ashthavinayak, apparently, agreed to pay him a whopping Rs. 3 crores to be part of the third segment of the ongoing Golmaal franchise, Arshad Warsi finally agreed to do the film. After frantic negotiations the deal was finally cut on Monday. And yes, Arshad has condescended to be part of Golmaal 3. His 3-crore rupee fee should be higher than every member of the cast barring Ajay Devgn. Even higher than Kareena Kapoor who has a 3-film deal with the producers. Says a source, "Arshad after Ishqiya was adamant on his fee. The producers tried to convince him to take a much smaller fee arguing that his co-stars Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor and Kunal Khemu (who replaces Sharman Joshi) were accepting a far smaller fee and if Arshad was paid 3 crores, the other actors would feel short-changed." Arshad stuck to his guns. Stories came out saying the actor, now hot at the box-office after Ishqiya, did not like the script of Golmaal 3. Says Rohit, "We were really keen to have him in the film. And yes the price has been worked out between Arshad and the producers. So he's on." Strangely though, even after Rohit confirmed Arshad's presence in Golmaal 3, Arshad was still in denial. Said the actor, "I am not sure yet. They've been after me for some time now. But I'm not able to make up my mind. I need to give time to my own production Hum Tum Aur Ghost. So I don't know how I'll manage the dates." However, sources from Golmaal 3 insist that Arshad is in at a staggering fee (for a non-lead actor). The other actor like Arshad who has started acting pricey after a hit (3 Idiots) is Sharman Joshi who was reportedly asking for Rs 2.5 crores. He turned down the third part of Golmaal through his secretary. Says Rohit Shetty, "Even before the scripting of Golmaal 3, Sharman sent me a message through his secretary saying he had other plans. I immediately looked for a replacement and am very happy with Kunal Khemu. Any regrets about Sharman? None at all. In fact we met at the airport recently and there wasn't any mention of Golmaal 3." With Ishqiya and 3 Idiots, Arshad Warsi and Sharman Joshi seem to be determined to move into the big league. Both actors are aiming to play the main lead. Without naming anyone Rohit Shetty says, "There're lots of very talented actors out here who are fabulous side attractions but can never be the main course." We can safely assume whom he is talking about.

He shot into immense fame with his smash hit song 'Allah Ke Bande', so much so that it had almost become the national anthem of the country. We are indeed talking about Kailash Kher, one of the most mellifluous singers of the recent times, who is simply on a roll. After having churned a million hit songs, Kher is now all set to make his presence felt on the international music scene, as he has now got into collaboration with the international musical sensation Khaled (of 'Didi' fame). The resultant was nothing but sheer magic, which will be heard and felt as the 'anthem that will be associated with the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2010'. Shazahn Padamsee signed up as brand ambassador for Skechers

When you have parents who are already superstars, it's but obvious that the spotlight will refuse to move away from you. Same is the case with Shazahn Padamsee, one of the front runner actresses of the Bubblegum generation. After having made her impressive debut in Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year, Shazahn, surely is on every director's wish list. The good news for all the 'Shazahn-ites' (need we say who they are!) is that this pretty girl has been signed up as the brand ambassador for Skechers, one of the leading shoe manufactures globally. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Shazahn confirmed saying, "Yes, I have been chosen as the brand ambassador for Skechers. I have shot for a print ad, which will be out soon." One of our confirmed sources added that the reason why Shazahn was chosen was the fact that 'The company needed a fresh face that can express a thousand emotions with even uttering a word. And also that the said brand was a thousand times careful while choosing their first Indian brand ambassador as its one of the most premium and respectable brands globally. And after scrutinizing many names, they finally zeroed down on Shazahn. And it is indeed a big-ticket ride for the actress also.' With this deal, Shazahn joins the likes of Britney Spears, Ashley Simpson, Brandy and David Cook, who also endorsed Skechers.

Fashion designer Rohit Bal suffers heart attack

Well-known fashion designer Rohit Bal suffered a heart attack yesterday. The designer has since been admitted to Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon. Bal, 42, suffered an attack at his Defence Colony residence and he was soon rushed to the hospital. Apart from designing for many Bollywood celebrities, Bal also has international clients like Uma Thurman, Cindy Crawford, Pamela Anderson, Naomi Campbell and Anna Kournikova to name a few. Besides, he is also the brand ambassador of Omega watches since 2001 and has ventured into the hotel business by launching two restaurants - Veda and Cibo - in the capital. Bollywood Hungama send out its prayers for his speedy recovery.

After Kites, Teen Patti gets a Hollywood editor

Click above for movie stills First it was Anurag Basu's Kites which got an editor Brett Ratner from Hollywood to put together the material after the Indian editor Akiv Ali (a regular on Anurag's films like Gangster and Life In A Metro). Director Anurag Basu was none too pleased with this creative meddling. But there was little he could do. Now it's Teen Patti which has roped in the services of a Hollywood editor over and above the desi editor Kaushik Das. Hughes Winborne who has edited the Will Smith starrers The Pursuit Of Happyness and Seven Pounds and also won an Oscar for his editing in Paul Haggis's Crash has done the 're-edit' of Teen Patti. Explains the director Leena Yadav, "We needed that international sensibility to be placed on the footage. We sent a subtitled print to Hughes. But he soon did away with the subtitles. He got all the Hindi jokes and punch lines." Why was it felt that a Hollywood editor would be able to give Teen Patti the global cut? Explains Leena, "It's really about getting the rhythm right. The Western audience has a different pace for movie viewing. That pace worked beautifully in my film." An international editor was not all that Teen Patti got from abroad. The film also imported a stunt co-ordinator. It was a sight to behold when the petite female director Leena Yadav decided to direct the Big B in some of his toughest stunts in the post-Zanjeer era for Teen Patti. The German stunt director Armin Sauer who has worked with global biggies like Matt Damon in the Bourne Supremacy and Ralph Fiennes in The Constant Gardener had been called to supervise the stunts. Leena let go of all stops and made sure she pulled the punches as hard as Armin. "These stunts that Mr. Bachchan has performed are very real, very raw. Not for a second was I allowed to feel like a woman on the sets. Agreed there were a lot of men on the set and two intimidating stalwarts like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley. But any director regardless of gender would have felt equally intimidated by these two stalwarts." It's generally said that female directors have a much tougher time directing a film than their male counterparts. Leena says she has never had to suffer because of her gender. "Not once did I feel I was disadvantaged by my gender. On the sets, my authority was never questioned. Whether it was legends like Mr. Bachchan and Sir Ben or the newcomers, they all surrendered to my vision."

"Today, a leading lady has to go beyond the glamour quotient" - Deepika Padukone

She has played a Diva and a bubby girl in Om Shanti Om, a confident single working woman in Bachna Ae Haseeno, an independent girl who takes some time to listen to her heart in Love Aaj Kal and a model/fighter in Chandni Chowk To China. Now in her Friday release Karthik Calling Karthik, she gets into a different zone altogether as she plays a bindaas city girl in Karthik Calling Karthik who likes to go party hopping, comes with urban sensibilities and doesn't mind getting her on-screen boyfriend (Farhan Akhtar) drunk. While one waits to see the depth and impact of the character of Shonali Mukherjee that she plays in the film, what is quite apparent is the entirely non-filmy style that she has adopted for the film. Was that a conscious effort on her part? "Yes, performances in Karthik Calling Karthik were meant to be very real and relatable. That was the requirement of the film and the characters. This is why you see that even Farhan's performance is very real in the film. I too had to adapt to a different acting style which was quite a task actually because I was also working on Housefull around the same time. Now the genre of Housefull is such where there had to be a lot more enthusiasm in my performance. On the other hand, Karthik Calling Karthik is a little understated", describes Deepika who is one of the busiest actors around today with close to half a dozen films at different stages of production. Other than Karthik Calling Karthik and Housefull, she would be seeing the release of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se (Abhishek Bachchan), Break Ke Baad (Imran Khan) and YRF's untitled film (Neil Nitin Mukesh) over next 12 months. Meanwhile, there are also a couple of other projects that may be green lighted by her soon. With films belonging to different genres in the anvil, Deepika has Karthik Calling Karthik as her first ever thriller. One can be rest assured that this must have been a new experience altogether for her to move out of quintessential Bollywood heroine mode and indulge into something which belongs to a different sensibility, right? "Well, not really", Deepika disagrees here, "Even if you take my last release Love Aaj Kal, it wasn't really the sort of film where there was a quintessential heroine and hero. It was treated entirely different. Besides that, the fact is that the kind of films which are being made are not what there used to be say, made 10 years ago." Giving a short take on the change that has happened in the presentation of leading ladies today, Deepika says, "I can speak for myself for sure that I won't be seen as a part of a film just for a song and dance routine. I guess most would agree that today when a girl is brought into a film, she is there for adding much more to the plot and narrative than just the glamour quotient." Well, with the film ready to arrive in just a few hours from now, it would be interesting to see the 'difference' that Deepika has indeed brought around in Karthik Calling Karthik which is carrying good vibes. With music by Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy and lyrics by Javed Akhtar, the film releases all over this Friday i.e. 26th February.
