"How many Bollywood horror films actually jolt?" - Sangeeth Sivan

Sangeeth Sivan Filmmaker Sangeeth Sivan is pleased that finally he has a horror film to his name. Though he has Sandhya (Jackie Shroff, Raveena Tandon and Ashutosh Rana) ready for close to a decade now, this horror flick has been lying in cans ever since then and never saw the light of the day. While Sangeeth did get recognition from successful films like Kya Kool Hain Hum and Apna Sapna Money Money, he decided to come out of his comfort zone and chose horror as the genre for his first production Click. "The idea was to jolt people at least twice in those two hours of Click", says Sangeeth in his trademark animated tone a day after the release of the film, "I am told that people are reacting at just the right junctures and as long as that is happening, I am happy." The film hasn't opened on a positive note at the box office though the reviews have been mostly positive with word of mouth (from whatever number of people who are watching the flick) encouraging. "For a film belonging to horror genre and that too with relatively newer faces, it is always difficult to get house full boards on the day of the release. I am happy though people are actually talking about the film now. I never intended to make a master piece but instead tell a commercial horror tale that has a definite storyline to boast", says Sangeeth in defence of the film. The double twist towards the concluding reels of Click is being much talked about and this is what is expected to entice audience to step inside the theatres. It is one of the newest ways that a story has been ended in a mainstream Bollywood horror film. Leave aside the shock value, it's the originality in the way Click takes a somersault towards the end that makes one forget the popcorn and SMS-ing and keeps one glued on screen. Really, one couldn't see that coming. "That was the entire idea; to tell something which couldn't be predicted by the audience. With all due respect to some of my counterparts who have 'horror hits' to their names, tell me how many of these films actually managed to jolt you? Personally, I wasn't taken aback in some of these films which have released over the last couple of years", adds Sangeeth in a matter of fact tone. In Click, just when one thought that you had cracked it all and got ready for the rolling of end credits come the double twist did make one all wide eyed. Really, these are the moments that make Click stand out from the likes of Phoonk, 1920 and Bhoot which were all good (and successful) in their own way but followed a set pattern. In fact the only similarity (to a little extent) in the end is with the one in Ram Gopal Varma's Darling but the fact here again is that not many have seen the Fardeen Khan - Esha Deol starrer. Hoping that word of mouth will succeed in taking Click to some distance, Sangeeth says, "The film should find patronage amongst the college students and youth in general. The feedback that I have received for the film is positive and that is encouraging enough."

SRK in middle of controversy once again, courtesy Lux Cozy

Click above for event stills No sooner that the controversy around SRK's comments on Pakistani cricket players has settled down, the actor finds himself in yet another controversy related to the IPL. This time round, it's the courtesy of inner wear brand Lux Cozy, of which, SRK is the recently appointed brand ambassador. The story goes that, since SRK is the brand ambassador of the said brand, it was rest understood as to they will be sponsoring the uniforms for Khan's T-20 team Kolkata Knight Riders, besides a monetary angle of course. All was well so far. Now the twist in the tale is that the Lux Company is owned by the Todi brothers (Ashok and Pradip). They are the same Todi brothers who were charged with apparently leading to the suicide of computer graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman, a Muslim, after he married Ashok Todi's daughter Priyanka, who was a Hindu by religion. This news had made it to the national headlines and remained atop for quite sometime. This 'sponsorship' move by SRK for KKR with the said brand has not been taken kindly by many. That's the reason why it has sparked anger in many people's heart. Not just that, since it has a religious pinch to it, a few religious bodies too have come in the forefront to express their opposition. In the lieu of all this, there has been a meeting that has been arranged which will include artistes, actors, dancers, writers, performers and also a few prominent names express solid opposition to the controversial tie-up. Watch this space for further development on this issue.

"SRK has not changed one bit since I worked with him in Mohabbatein" - Jimmy Sheirgill

Jimmy Sheirgill It's been a week since Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan released and while the film is breaking records and earning praise for the performance of its main protagonists played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, three is yet another actor who is quietly basking in the adulation coming his way. We are talking about the talented and versatile Jimmy Sheirgill who once again excels in a strong character role playing SRK's younger brother. Bollywood Hungama's Nikhil Ramsubramaniam got in touch with Jimmy and spoke to him about MNIK and his forthcoming films. Read on! When My Name Is Khan opened last Friday, a lot of people were surprised to see you in the film since you were not seen in the promos at all. What do you have to say about that? Well...these things do not bother me. The strategy of who should feature in the promos and who shouldn't is entirely the makers' prerogative. Everyone knew that SRK and Kajol are the main protagonists of the film. Having said that, right from when I was offered the film, I knew I had an important role- that of Shah Rukh's younger brother and I am glad I took it up. It always helps being a part of such a big film. I have been getting tremendous feedback and am really thankful to Karan for considering me for this role. I knew I had an important role- that of Shah Rukh's younger brother and I am glad I took it up You have worked with some big directors like Gulzar saab, Aditya Chopra, Raju Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. How was it working with Karan Johar for the first time? I've wanted to work with Karan for a long time. In fact whenever we met, he used to tell me that when I have a suitable role for you I'll call you. So when I got a call for My Name Is Khan, I was really excited. As soon as I heard the script, I knew that I had to be a part of this film since the story had so much to say and plus it gave me an opportunity to work with Karan for the first time ever. You starred with Shah Rukh in Mohabbatein, which was among your first few films, almost 10 years ago. How was it re-uniting with him after such a long time? Shah Rukh has not changed one bit since the time we worked in Mohabbatein. I call him 'Superman' because there is nothing that is Impossible for him. He still exudes the same kind of enthusiasm and energy which he had almost 10 years ago and that is something which is truly remarkable. He is always concerned about the people he works with and was just like an elder brother to me on the sets. I call SRK 'Superman' because there is nothing that is Impossible for him. He still exudes the same kind of enthusiasm and energy which he had almost 10 years ago and that is something which is truly remarkable. Your co-star Soniya Jehan has also been appreciated a lot for her act. How was it working with her? Fantastic...not just Soniya, every member of the cast knew exactly what his / her role was and gave 100%. Under Karan's guidance, the whole unit was completely focused and yet totally at ease. A lot of actors shy away from doing supporting roles as they feel that it would affect their prospects of bagging a solo hero project. You, on the other hand, have been doing both solo hero films and multi-starrers simultaneously… You are right...Right from my early days; I never had any inhibitions about the length of my role or any insecurity of being over-shadowed by any bigger actor. Be it in Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai or Eklavya, I have always done roles which may not be big in terms of length but are big in terms of impact. I believe that a role should be exciting enough to hold my interest and that is the only criteria I look at before signing a film. Right from my early days, I never had any inhibitions about the length of my role or any insecurity of being over-shadowed by any bigger actor. You are currently shooting for yet another multi-starrer Excel Entertainment's Crooked. What kind of a film is that? Crooked is a superb thriller directed by a very talented new director Abhinay Deo. There are a lot of brilliant actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher etc... The film has quite a few parallel tracks running which are intertwined in a strange way. Since it's a thriller, I can't reveal much about the film but I'll say that I have a kick ass role. It's the kind of role I have never done before. Besides Crooked, what else do you have in your kitty? There is Johnny Mastana which is a gripping drama directed by Shoojit Sircar and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Dia Mirza etc. The film is complete and the producers UTV will be deciding on the release date soon. There is also Anjum Rizvi's Flat which is a very slick and stylish supernatural thriller starring Sanjay Suri and I. It is one of the most original stories that I have come across in the thriller genre. Besides these, I also have a Punjabi film Mel Kara De Rabba which should release sometime in April.

Hrithik Roshan tweets his fitness tips

Hrithik Roshan Gone are the days when you had to slog and sweat yourself in the gym to get a dream body like your favorite film stars. These days, if you want to 'ape' your stars and acquire a chiseled body like them, do nothing but simply arm yourself with an internet connection and a 'twitter' account! Sounds crazy? Well, the fact is that the 'Brand Ambassador of Dream Physique' department aka Hrithik Roshan, has been tweeting these days sharing all about health and fitness tips. We are sure that after reading this, all of you are going to immediately jam up the twitter server by logging onto it. But for the impatient ones, here's what Hrithik has to say (an insight) which includes his favorite health supplements and a few exercises, that will keep your entire body in trim shape! If you are a regular on his tweets, you will not be surprised if we call him Dr. Hrithik! But for the uninitiated lot, Hrithik has been giving health and fitness tips on Twitter. Sample this: * Tone ur thigh muscles. High reps low weight. Cardio, diet, n u should see results. If not- TRY HARDER! Whether 2 lose weight or gain muscle-get good sleep! Days when u just can't get yourself to workout, you are free not to. BUT GET URSELF TO THE GYM FIRST and decide THERE!! Run / walk (flat n incline) 1min each alternating, totally for max 15mins is good enough! My target-700cals per w/o (cardio+ weights) Don't forget legs- large muscle- promotes testosterone which helps increase overall muscle mass. RUN/walk when u can for cardio! My fav supplements-vit C, multivitamin, antioxidant, L-glutamine, omega 3 (never 6), creatine (only to bulk 4 short periods), Consistency is paramount! Keep changing your w/o everyday. Do something different, anything! Every time u get tired, do one more last set Don't forget to stretch/warm up! Don't lift too heavy. Min 8 reps per set. Keep w/o's short n intense 45min max... Hrithik states that 'Body doesn't grow in the GYM, it grows while you rest! He also adds that one need not splurge on protein supplements, since they are great if they are used in the right amount. Well, this Greek God personified also makes it a point to advice the 'grass root level basic mantra' of all times: Water! He validates this advice stating that it is water which is probably the only alkaline food in our diet! To get a first hand experience of the same, you can follow Hrithik on twitter @iHrithik. And yes...you can thank us anytime!

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Toh Baat Pakki

Toh Baat Pakki It's the other film this week Click that's meant to be a horror flick. But Toh Baat Pakki is a bigger horror than anything this week, or in any recent week. To think that the divine Tabu stars in it makes the blood boil. On paper the idea of playing the busybody housewife Rajeshwari who seems to have only one mission in life, namely to see her sister (newcomer Yuvika) married off, must have sounded like an exciting new character to explore for the brilliant actress. Alas, Tabu had not bargained for the mundane situations and the pedestrian dialogues that her character is put into. Baat Pakki is one of those tragic comedies that don't elicit a hint of humour. If Basu Chatterjee lost the plot, he would probably have turned up with this listless ode to the middle-of-the-road movies of the 1970s. This middle-of-the-roader gets stranded in the middle of nowhere. The plot is intrinsically bereft of ingenuity. The direction is plodding and strained most of the way Among the many problems that plague the plot is the lack of inherent drama in Tabu's character. Her character has no inner life, no motivating emotions except hatching silly match-making schemes for her giddy-headed sister to tie the knot. She first invites Sharman into her home as a tenant. Then Vatsal. Before a third tenant gets the suitor's suite we make a quick exit out of the theatre. Toh Baat Pakki Tabu plays the interesting-on-paper dreadful-in-execution housewife as part-schemer, part-dreamer but entirely annoying and avoidable. Unlike the shrew that Sridevi played with full-blooded passion in Judaai Tabu's Rajeshwari is a woman caught in annoying confusions of self-assertion. And she's not to blame. What do you do with a narration that has been shot on the sets erected in Ooty for Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani? The lingering condition of a hangover mixed with yesterday's leftovers stays with the film right till the bustling conclusion when all of Rajeshwari's match-making manipulation comes to fatuous fruition. Toh Baat Pakki tries hard to be charming and quaint. It lacks that lightness of weight that would have made the characters appear larger than life in an unstrained, unstained atmosphere. A pity, since the ethereal Tabu is hardly seen in any film. She tries bravely to get out of her dramatic space to deliver a broad satirical performance that screams for behind-the-scenes fine-tuning. She gets no support from her co-stars except maybe Ayub Khan who as her supportive husband plays a thankless part with warmth. Sharman Joshi as Tabu's sister's first suitor has done the goofy act lately in 3 Idiots. Here he has nothing new or appealing to add to his uninspired character. Toh Baat Pakki Vatsal Seth as suitor no.2 gives his clean-cut good-boy role a genial treatment. The second -half when Sharman pretending to be the bride-to-be's well-wisher tries to influence Vatsal against the marital alliance is suspiciously similar to Yash Chopra's Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. That at least had some derivative energy to sustain its silly romantic movement. Toh Baat Pakki is as inert at its centre as s clock that stopped ticking while you were sleeping. Avoid, even if you are a diehard Tabu fan. In fact please avoid IF you are Tabu fan.

Hema Malini rushes to Goa to capture carnival, then travels economy class to Bihar

Hema Malini It's been a hectic time for Hema Malini. She's been producing a film for her daughter Esha under impossible weather conditions and back-breaking schedules in different parts of the world. Last week she had to rush with her cast and crew to Goa to shoot the carnival there. Said Hema, "The Goa shoot was not supposed to happen now. But we needed to shoot the carnival which was held from February 13-16. So we preponed the schedule that was to happen later in the year and rushed to Goa last week. Now we'll have to go back to Goa later." On Saturday, Hema had to travel from Goa to Patna for a dance recital which she had committed to perform before the unscheduled Goan trip. However, she hadn't bargained for being put in what Shashi Tharoor so picturesquely described as the 'cattle classes'. Giggles the danseuse-actress, "There was no business class in the flight to Patna. I had to sit in economy. I didn't mind at all. But the people around me seemed to be very distracted. I felt concerned for them." Hema had around 300 pairs of eyes gazing at her. "I don't know why they needed to stare. You say because I'm beautiful? No. I never believed I was. My mother always taught me to stay grounded. I never started believing I was someone special."

Brief overview on why Amendments to the Copyright Act has created such a stir

While the Ministry of Human Resource & Development is working on the amendments to the Copyright Act 1957, several issues and concerns have been raised and discussed in print, media and on the Internet that is based on speculation and has created a cloud of uncertainty, anxiety and concern for people in the Media & Entertainment Industry and more particularly music companies and owners of copyright in music and films. Most concerning speculations that have spread in the industry are regarding amending the copyright laws to make them oriented selectively in line with certain (though not all) western jurisdictions and Bollywood Hungama believes that we as committed members of the Industry, must distinguish the Indian situation from that of other countries. Even within the developed world, there are very significant differences between the copyright laws and traditions of different countries. Creation, Production & Promotion of Music: The Indian Experience vis-à-vis the West Most music in India is primarily made for and promoted by films/movies (cinematographed films). The film producers in India commission various creative artistes (music composers, lyricists, singers) and a song is recorded at the instance of the film's Producer (or producer of a music album). Selection of such a team of creative artistes is also mostly by the producer of the song/album and often the songs are written based on the script/story or situation of the film from which the composers of music and lyrics draw heavy inspiration. Thus, the Producers/Music Companies who commission the making of such music/songs control and determine greatly the creative nature of the final output/product. Not only does the producer/music company bear the cost of the recording of the song (that includes substantial payments to such creative artistes), the producer spends large amounts of money on the shoot of the film with which such song is synchronized, its promotions and publicity that includes promotions by way of hoardings, print in magazines and papers, broadcast visual songs on Satellite TV channels and Radio and digitally over mobile and telephonic platforms and Internet. Unlike many developed countries, where the business model whereby music is brought into the market is different, i.e. the artist takes his work to a music publisher; Indian industry remains primarily film-driven. Unlike developed countries, where the creative inputs in terms of music and lyrics are generally given by the same artist, and often such artist makes the investment of the recording and promoting his music, in India the Producer himself identifies talent and proactively chooses and goes to the artist whose works he will promote through his films or otherwise. Further, where in most countries usage, in a film, is only incidental, and in fact it is the song that makes a film popular, unlike the case in India where the film promotes the music in it. This system has evolved historically on the basis of economic realities in India. Popularity of music and songs The Indian experience, and also the global experience, shows that the popularity of music/song of a film is not entirely based on the creative inputs of such creative artistes (composers of lyrics and music), but very substantially on the promotion that the artiste gets from those who invest in him. It is the producer of the film who spends large amounts of money on the glamorous sets and locations and ever increasing amounts of monies on popular actors on whom the songs are shot and picturized coupled with tireless promotion and publicity plans to make the song/music get public attention and popular among masses. In reality it is the efforts of the producer and the music company that makes a song heard and noticed by public and when liked, such songs become popular. Also, the duration of footage in a film (with 4-5 songs) form a substantial portion of the film and the proportionate cost of shooting of the song today runs in several crores. Thus, it is the producer who shoots the songs creatively and aesthetically selecting the popular actors, sets and locations and the music company who subsequently spends crores on promotion of the music album across all platforms (FM Radio, Satellite TV, Mobile and Internet) and also spends on manufacturing of compact discs/cassettes/dvds and distributes it across all corners of the country and thus, after investment of crores of rupees, a song becomes heard by the masses and if liked then popular. It's only then that such creative artistes who have collectively contributed in a song as commissioned by the producer also get their fame. While the creative artistes (composers, lyricists and singers) are paid at the time of recording of the songs, the producers and music company who subsequently acquire copyright takes many years to recover the investments made on such songs/music before they break even and start to taste the fruit of their investments. Such creative artistes on the other hand from the popularity of the song/music attained by tireless efforts and investments of the producer/music company, get opportunity and profit from public performance in shows, events, but they do not share any share of their profits with such producers/music company on whose behest such song was created, recorded and made popular. The most prevalent business models in the Industry today reward such creative artistes at the time of commissioning such music albums and thereafter upon recoupment of investments a fair share of profits from the music companies/producers. Again, by way of example, we feel that the present system of compensation to composers, writers and performers is in their interest giving them security of agreed compensation regardless of the success or failure of the film-it must be borne in mind that the majority of films are not successful. The entire risk at present is borne by the Producer. Alternative royalty-based non-assignable rights models, if imposed by law, are likely to do away with the present up-front payment system: being bound to pay royalty from the first day of exploitation without recouping the costs incurred, the Producer will be less willing to make a substantial up-front payment. The result will make the artist dependent on factors beyond his control affecting the success or failure of the film, and also dependent on the accounts rendered to him periodically by the Producer (or the Producer's successor-in-interest), and that too for the entire term of copyright. This can only lead to disputes. Unconsidered intervention in existing market arrangements and market structures can have highly unpredictable consequences. It may hence be preferable to allow the law of contract, of competition and of copyright to evolve through judicial decisions and through the development of new business models in response to changing technologies, than to risk unresearched amendments to the law.

Big B, Abhishek upset with tabloid claiming Ash's 'pregnancy plans are delayed'

Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan Being a celebrity comes with its share of perks and also controversies, not forgetting the ever prying eyes of the media and the rumour mills that never fail to function. The latest to be hit by this is the Bachchan family. Just recently, a popular tabloid carried reports about the Bachchan bahu regarding her health issues. The tabloid stated that Aishwarya, who has apparently been trying to conceive for a while, is suffering from stomach tuberculosis and hence is unable to conceive. The paper has gone so far as to say that the Bachchan family has since covered this up by adopting the stance of 'it will happen when it has to' which has enraged the senior Bachchan. Big B expressed his anger on his blog, stating, "I write to you today in deep anguish, pain and disgust. This article is completely false, completely fabricated, unsubstantiated, insensitive and of the lowest quality of journalism there ever was. I am the head of my family. Aishwarya is not my daughter-in -law; she is my daughter, a woman, a lady in my house and home. If anyone will speak derogatorily about her, I shall fight for her till my last breath. If you have something to say to the men in the house, Abhishek or me, I shall bear it. BUT ... if you shall make injudicious remarks on the women in my home, I shall not tolerate it!!!" He continues, "I am too incensed and angered by the contents!! Not a single portion of the article is true!! I have much to comment upon on this, but shall hold on till another day." While Abhishek too has been very upset about this and is displaying his discontent on the matter through his tweets since yesterday, calling the article totally baseless.

Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif in Dibakar Banerjee's next

Imran Khan Imran Khan proved himself a man of the masses when recently he shot a cola ad with Kalki Koechlin shot by Dibakar (Love Sex & Dhokha) Banerjee. The ad, a slice-of-life love story about two strangers' chance encounter on a crowded streets of Mumbai shot over 2 days last month, had hordes of fan descending on location. Imran dealt with the situation like a pro, mingling, signing autographs, posing for photographs. The BEST bus hired for the shoot became his home for two days. Says Banerjee who's making his next feature film with Imran, "Seeing the discipline and drive Imran invested into the ad, I'm more than convinced I'm ready to work with mainstream actors." Banerjee who has so far done three feature films with actors like Abhay Deol, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher, is looking to cast Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. Apparently, Imran was lost to the rest of the world for those two days when the ad was shot. Says Dibakar, "We shot the ad on a relatively lonely stretch of road in Malad. But the news that Imran was shooting spread and fans would swoop down every hour. Considering the tight schedule Imran would either quickly hide in his vanity van until the fans left or meet them in a very friendly manner." The BEST bus had character actors as Imran's co-passengers and Imran was soon friendly with all of them. Says the director, "All I can say is, Imran won more than a busload of fans in those two days. At the moment, I'm busy putting finishing touches to my release Love Sex Aur Dhokha. But right after that I'll get to work on the Imran project."
