Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 15 Feb 2010 | 6:17 am Akshay does a John Travolta in Action Replayy
By now its common knowledge that Vipul Shah is all set to take a trip down the retro lane with his Akshay Kumar- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Action Replayy. However, what did catch us by surprise was when we saw this picture of Akshay in a complete retro rock star look from Action Replayy.
Apparently, Akki's look in this particular dance number is modeled on the lines of John Travolta's in the cult classic Grease. Akshay, who is a huge John Travolta fan, was more than happy to step into this get-up for this special song sequence with Ash. The duo thoroughly enjoyed practicing the dance steps of the disco era for this particular song.
An elated Akki, who thoroughly enjoys listening to retro music, said, "The 70s was full of energy, that's the reason why retro is hip. There is something about the fashion and music of that era which makes it so funky even today and perhaps it will always be that way."
With Akshay and Ash bringing together a sizzling chemistry in this electric number, filmmaker Vipul Shah must be surely grinning from ear to ear. After all, it looks like he has a winner on hands.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 15 Feb 2010 | 6:13 am DVD Review: Zindagi Ek Safar

THE FILM
This is truly criminal. A DVD of a documentary on the life of none other than Kishore Kumar arrives on stands and that too completely unannounced. Worse, it is either not available or not even prominently displayed at any of the stores, whether major retail outlets or petty shops which pretty much tells the tale. What a pity because this is
actually a rare piece of work which was made two decades ago after the death of Kishore Kumar. Directed by Sandip Ray, son of Satyajit Ray, Zindagi Ek Safar is a documentary that was hardly seen by many when it first arrived but it definitely deserves a dekko when made available on a DVD. Alas, the presenters (Moser Baer)
themselves seem to be under confident about the product that they have in their hand and have made no effort to market or promote it all.
Since the film is two decades old, there is a disclaimer at the very beginning stating - 'The video from which this copy was obtained is old and extremely rare but is the best available material'. This hardly matters though because it's the 'content' that does the talking here. Taking a viewer through the personal and the professional life of Kishore Kumar, the best part is that other than being a documentary on his life 'after his death', it also turns out to be biographical at a few places because the subject in question, Kishore Kumar himself, is seen and heard at number of junctures.
Sandip Ray has put quite some effort in making this film and it is visible in the way he has procured clips from not just Kishore Kumar's earlier interview (in conversation with Lata Mangeshkar) but also some of his own home videos. An easy part is to get hold of songs and scenes from the current crops of films but stepping into the library of the 50s and the 60s and bringing to fore some lesser heard songs and lesser seen scenes definitely makes for a rare viewing. This is where Ray scores because he gives his viewers something to really cherish for years to come.
So what one gets to see is Kishore Kumar's rise from being a singing actor to someone for whom singing became a full fledged career in decades to follow. It may have well become a boring documentary had Ray followed a 'lets talk business' approach. However, he spices it up by sharing quite a few anecdotes about the personal and
professional life of Kishore Kumar that makes this DVD much more than just a 'paisa vasool' moment. This is where commentator Ameen Sayani comes handy as he adds on his personal touch to make the viewing interesting.
In this endeavour of his, Ray finds the goodwill shared by Kishore Kumar come in handy as the entire industry comes forward to talk about the man that he was. Right from his brothers Ashok Kumar and Anup Kumar to colleagues like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle to composers like Rajesh Roshan and Kalyanji Anandji - everyone has at least one interesting incident to share about Kishore Kumar, the eternal entertainer. Meanwhile there are also superstars like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna, who share their professional relationship with Kishore Kumar and what makes the copy further interesting is to see these actors as they were 20 years back when the video was made.
However, the best is reserved for the points where R.D. Burman remembers Kishore Kumar. No melodrama, no overly emotional moments - it is plain fun when Panchamda gets into his casual avtar and narrates number of interesting moments that he shared with Kishore Kumar. Yet again, the DVD becomes interesting not just for Kishore Kumar but also the fact that the current generation gets to see and hear Panchamda as he was. On the other hand Kishore Kumar's immediate family members like wife Leena Chandravarkar and son Amit Kumar succeed in taking viewers through an emotional ride.
From the current generation, Shah Rukh Khan too comes up with more than just a byte and this is where the DVD seems compromised because it is just an added snippet shot before the release of Om Shanti Om. A tribute from Shaan also looks a little unwarranted and how one wishes if Ray would have just stuck to his original video before re-shooting it with some celebrities from the current generation.
However, these are just minor blemishes in the DVD which has dozens of songs and scenes featuring Kishore Kumar that make for a nostalgic viewing. Add to that the spice around his numerous love affairs, alleged eccentricities and the sheer uniqueness that he brought around and Zindagi Ek Safar turns out to be a not-to-be-missed affair.
PACKAGING
DVD of Zindagi Ek Safar comes in a very ordinary and not-to-striking packing which is quite unfortunate since a documentary film like this deserved to be presented in a much better manner so as to attract maximum eye balls. The dull cover layout doesn't help the cause either. Sad.

Akshay Kumar's deadly stunt atop a plane in Khiladi 420 many years ago is still quite famous. Now Akshay is all set to do yet another action sequence in an airplane in Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan.
Bollywood Hungama spoke to Farah who seemed all excited at the prospect of shooting this scene. "Yes...you heard it right. We have constructed an actual Jumbo Jet at Film City for a very important sequence in Tees Maar Khan. The scene is Akshay's introductory shot in the film. Akki, who plays a smart-alec, is being taken captive in the airplane and how he outsmarts everyone and plans his escape forms the crux of the scene. He will be seen doing some really funny yet deadly action stunts in this particular scene. The scene also features popular VJ Mia along with her Chihuahua dog."
On being asked the cost of constructing a huge airplane, Farah said, "I can't reveal how much it exactly costs but yes, it did cost us a bomb. It's a beautiful Jumbo Jet with plush interiors. Our art director Sabu Cyril has done a fantastic job. In fact, if anyone wants to use a Jumbo Jet for a shoot they can contact me."
This huge comic-action sequence is going to be shot from March 1st onwards.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 15 Feb 2010 | 5:38 am Book Review: Karl, Aaj Aur Kal
This is a book which is 'not' meant to be read in one go. Reason being that it is 230 pages of never ending jokes and the best way to enjoy jokes is to space them out. No, it isn't as if reading more than 20 pages of 'Karl, Aaj Aur Kal' is harmful by any means but then why not extend the humour to number of days rather than exhausting all the joy in 3 hours flat?
Did I say joy? That's right, joy, and this is what contemporary India's master of comedy, Cyrus Broacha, brings to immense measure in this tale of two youngsters who go by the name of Karl and Kunal. This time around he dons the hat of a story teller and brings in so much humour throughout his book that it is difficult to control laughter at any given point during the reading. A word of caution though - This is the kind of book which is enjoyed most if you are fond of Cyrus Broacha brand of humour. Which means that nothing and no one is spared, including Cyrus himself.
So what one gets to hear are jokes on opposite sex, age, race, nationality, profession, politics, art, Bollywood - well, just about anything and everything that one can think of. For those who are willing to catch the joke when thrown on him and still laugh at it, 'Karl, Aaj Aur Kal' is the one to be referred. The good part also is that even though quite a few (in fact most of them) jokes cross a certain limit, they do not sound offensive as long as taken in a right spirit. Also, majority of them are absolute originals that make one believe that cracking jokes comes inherent to Cyrus. Certainly, a gift indeed.
Coming to the content of 'Karl, Aaj Aur Kal', Cyrus gets cracking from the very beginning. Establishing his protagonists Karl and Kunal as the eternal losers, he comes up with a classic rags to riches story that had too less of a struggle and quite a lot of luck factor involved. So here we have two young boys who have an average growing up years of bunking classes, watching films, savouring food and enjoying pornography. It is this setting which takes Karl and Kunal from school to college and then dramatics. Soon they find themselves doing bit roles, only to graduate into B Grade heroes and later, with the blessings of a much senior actor Yusuf Khan, even lead roles. Wine, dine and women follow with Karl and Kunal turning into national celebrities. With a blossoming acting career, politics follows and no sooner had it all started seeming to be a dream, an opportunity of stepping into the shoes of a Prime Minister too beckons for one of the protagonists.
It is this basic plot on which Cyrus Broacha goes on to spin a momentous tale that is full of wit and relentless sarcasm. Dozens of reference points from the past and present are made, most of them (actually all) being fake and written about in order to get the right effect. The way Cyrus phrases his sentences also tells a lot about the person that he is, hence managing to bring his own self into the characters. Whether it is metaphors or real life references, Cyrus scores and though purists may argue that his sense of humour is crude, the fact remains that he consciously allows it that way and doesn't make two bones about it.
Which brings one to the question that what exactly is the target audience for 'Karl, Aaj Aur Kal'? Well, first and foremost it is the entire fan base that Cyrus enjoys. Turning over the pages of the book is akin to Cyrus talking himself and this is where the familiarity factor sets in. Secondly, the book should find popularity amongst the youth. Rest assured, don't try reading it in a public place lest you end up bursting out laughing at number of junctures. Believe me; it is embarrassing to say the least because I personally experienced that myself while reading it during my recent air trip.
This is a book to be read in private so that you can enjoy your 'bursting out laughing' moments the most. Really, 'Karl, Aaj Aur Kal' has ample funny moments that you can actually pick any page at the given moment and it would surely make you giggle away at the least.

Darsheel can't believe he's a superhero at the age of 12. "Zokkomon has been a very hard film to shoot, much harder than Taare Zameen Par. But it was worth it. I get to fly in the air, over buildings, save and rescue people. I felt like a true hero," says Darsheel delightedly. "What's more I had my own special really cool costume, like Superman's cape... even better."
Does Darsheel realize he's one of the youngest superheroes in the world? He chuckles, "I do realize that. But after Taare⦠I had to prove to the world that I can do better, no? So I had to do a really special film."
Darsheel says his studies were hard to keep up with because of the long hours of training and shooting for Zokkomon. "My teachers used to come on the sets, so I wouldn't lag behind in my studies. It was really tough doing this film. But finally worth it. Because my friends will see me flying through the air. I can't wait."
What would Darsheel's friends and girlfriend think of him playing the super-hero?
"The question on the girlfriend is a personal one," says the mature superstar. "As for my friends, they'd probably freak out. I'm enjoying the thought of being the youngest superhero in the world."

There was a strong rumour in the industry last week that Abhay Deol who is on a high after the accolades and fair amount of profits for Dev D was having second thoughts on doing Zoya Akhtar's film with Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan.
"Abhay," said a reliable source, "wants to do only solo-hero projects."
When questioned Abhay doesn't deny that he has indeed so far sought out films where he is the only male lead. "And why not? From my first film Socha Na Tha to Dev D most of the films that I've been doing so far have offered me a chance to be on my own. Why not use the cinema space to create your own rhythm and pace when you are getting the opportunity? Having said that, I'd be foolish to turn down something like Zoya's film. It does have three heroes, yes. But all of us have strong interesting and equal roles. That's why I agreed to do the film."
Abhay also reminds you that he has done an ensemble cast before. "I did Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd directed by Reema Kagti. And thoroughly enjoyed myself."
In fact in Honeymoon... Abhay had stepped into a role earmarked for Farhan. A fact Abhay says he wasn't aware of when he signed the film. That's where his friendship with Farhan began. Abhay admits if he wasn't friendly with Farhan and Hrithik he would've had a tough time deciding whether to do the project. "So yes, for all practical purposes I will be doing only solo-hero films. Even Aisha is a solo-hero film," says Abhay, and never did the film's leading lady Sonam Kapoor's father Anil Kapoor think she's the film's 'hero.'
Abhay finishes Anil Kapoor's Aisha and goes straight into his home production Basra and Zoya Akhtar's film with Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar.
Abhay hopes to spend most of 2010 in Mumbai working around the clock in three new projects which includes Zoya Akhtar's road movie. Abhay who has taken a sabbatical from his new home-life in New York, is also all set to do a full-on potboiler.
For now he's also done with modern literary adaptations. First Dev D which was a punk-version
"Provided I get one that I like. I can't just hop genres for the heck of it. But yes a typical conventional commercial film does seem like a good idea right now. And by the way I've done the song-and-dance routine in my first film Socha Na Tha."
New York is now Abhay's second home, "I've made friends there. But not too many. I don't make friends easily. Whenever I get lonely I fly down to meet my sisters in California. I'll be working away from New York during most of the film. But I'll hardly be in Mumbai. I'll be traveling to shoot through most of 2010."
About the welding course in the US, Abhay confesses he didn't attend the classes too regularly. "But yes I can weld stuff. So the course wasn't a waste."
Any hopes of winning awards for Dev D? "Not really. I've never really won any awards. I've managed to make a decent career without them," Abhay ends wryly.![]() Indiainfo.com | Shahid Kapoor throwing tantrums?
