Raj Rajaratnam Needs A Place To Crash In The City

Picture 146.pngRaj Rajaratnam (and lady friend Danielle Chiesi) know that there is "not even a chance" they will do one day in jail, because they're innocent, and didn't do anything wrong. Given. Still, Raj-Raj has to pay some lawyers to prove it, and representation does not come cheap. That presumably has nothing to do with the Galleon founder recently selling his 60 Sutton Place South apartment, for $1.575 million. He could've needed to free up the cash for a lot of things, like the money to pay a few more analysts to be tased, but this time with an even more powerful gun, and to hire actors for his annual April Fool's Day joke (last year it was it was a dwarf pretending to be the Galleon's latest "small-cap" stocks analyst; this year is anyone's guess!). In any event, while the big man will probably be spending most of his time up at the house in Greenwich, he will need a place to stay when he's too drunk to make the trip home. Someone should help a brother out.

Podcast: Dreaming Of Plastic Crates In Haiti

On today's Planet Money:

We meet "Mango Man," Jean Maurice Buteau, who heads JMB exports in Port-au-Prince. Jean Maurice buys mangoes from rural Haitian farmers and sells them to the US. Unfortunately, between the mango farm and his office near the port, almost half the mangoes get damaged. If Jean Maurice could just get his farmers to put their mangoes in plastic crates, he could double his revenue and the farmers' income.

We take a look at why a simple idea like plastic crates, is in Haiti, not simple at all.

Because of his choice of pants, Zell, who was coming to give a lecture on the outlook of real estate, was barred from entering. Organizers thankfully came to the rescue, wrapping a "borrowed camel-hair dress coat" around his shoulders (how did that help the jean situation?), a trick that somehow worked wonders. Zell was able to give his lecture, said everything sucks and everyone went home happy, especially those in the audience who got a look at Zell's chest hair.

John Thomas Financial CEO, Defender Of Equal Rights For Wall Street, Most Likely Has Another Issue He'd Like To Address

Picture 143.pngA few weeks ago, John Thomas Financial CEO Thomas Belesis demanded respect for a group of people, the denizens of Wall Street, who, while labeled "different" from the rest of society because of their alternative professions, are still human beings who deserve to be treated fairly. Belesi did so by organizing a rally on his firm's trading floor attended almost exclusively by the people whose desks are there. He mostly spoke in broad terms, since this was the first event of its kind, and the organizers just wanted to get their name and cause out there. But now, let us get down to specifics. Wall Streeters should not be ashamed of what they do, or try to hide it behind closed doors for fear of judgment or backlash. For instance, before JB started JTF, he worked at place where strippers danced regularly on the trading floor, labia rings were sniffed, breasts were used as napkins, and junior employees mopped up their boss's jizz. But outside the halls of the firm, no one was allowed to talk about it. And not only that, but people actually got in trouble with the law for this sort of thing! And if you're Thomas Belesis, you're probably thinkin' "that ain't right."

'David's Lawn-mowing Efficiency Hierarchy'

Dan Larremore writes:

I just listened to the efficiency podcast with Matt LeBlanc, and grinned while Caitlin joked about David's lawn-mowing question at the end. You see, I too have asked that same question, and have struggled with the nagging feeling that says, "shouldn't you be more efficient with your time, and do something instead of trying to answer questions like these?" However, I have been inspired to actually think it through.
I think that no matter which pattern you mow in, when you're walking with the mower, you're going the same speed. Therefore, it all comes down to the turns. So, think about a rectangular patch of grass. I propose the following -- David's Lawnmowing Efficiency Hierarchy (DLEH. Rhymes with "blech" and sounds like a Yiddush suffix.)
1. The most efficient way to mow is the spiral: start from the outside and do the border, spiraling in to the middle.
2. Next, you have the long stripes: mow the long edge-the length of the rectangle-and then u-turn, and go back forth, striping the turf till you're done.
3. Next, the short stripes: same as long stripes, but this time you're going back and forth across the short distance.
4. Finally, the diagonal stripes: make strips starting at one corner, and going back and forth across the diagonal of the rectangle.Aesthetically, you're going to want to dial this one to 45 degrees.
4b. The Old Man "Keep Off My Lawn You Darn Kids" Deluxe Double-Diagonal Stripes: Do method 4, then do it again so the diagonals crisscross. Recommended for baseball outfields.
Since I heard you drew a diagram for Caitlin, make a rectangle for each of these on a sheet. Put an X where there's a right-angle turn, and a Y where there's a 180, for each of these methods. I have attached my diagram, taken from my Matt-LeBlanc-Whiteboard, and I think you will probably agree with my diagram. You can total the number of X or Y for each method, also shown in the diagrams.
Now, the real question is for comparing the spiral and the long stripes. Do you think two 90 degree turns take longer or shorter than one 180 degree turn? I think shorter, because the 180 you have to overshoot, and then turn, and then come back. Plus, if an edge of the yard is against a fence, that 180 can be a real beast up against the fence.
Therefore, I reason that Y < 2X, and so the spiral wins...for time. But clearly, the double-diagonal is the most visually attractive, and if you're like my mother, you drag the mower from the middle of the spiral when you're done with that method, ruining the aesthetic of the spiral even more.
A whiteboard illustration of mowing techniques

This Week’s Weird Jobs

Different jobs require different kinds of suits. Business suits. Pantsuits. A jerky suit. Birthday suits. Sex on a boat, wearing whatever you please. This week’s jobs cover them all:

1. Colorado: LOOKING FOR COMPETENT WORKERS

We are looking for competent workers.

Competent workers to do what exactly? Oh right–work.

2. Texas: Aviation English Instructor

ESL instructor needed to assist with teaching Aviation English to Scandinavian students, ensuring that students achieve a minimum of FAA required ICAO level 4 Operational English. Must be able to use working curriculum, formulate and execute lesson plans, and communicate effectively with multiple flight instructors and management staff on an on-going basis. Flexible schedule and reliable transportation required. Salary dependent on experience.

If you think that “here mit de boome shooten!” and “reeght crussveend depertoore-a” are legitimate ATC commands, please do not apply.

3. Indiana: Jerky Distributor Wanted

Gourmet Jerky at its best! Very established company. Part-Time, commission only, slow starting income….. but unlimited income for the right person. Email me for details….

“Jerky distributor” is one of those job titles you’d best leave at the door before singles night.

4. CA: Sex for rent – live on a boat!

It’s that simple – older gent looking for some simple companionship. Get back to me for details.

PS. It’s a dinghy. PPS. It’s moored in the San Pedro shipping port. PPSS. I wear dirty speedos. It’s worth free rent, I swear.

5. OR: Personal assistant to naturist couple

Successful, well-established couple, mid-30s (she’s a film editor, he’s a novelist) seek a shared personal assistant to cover a wide range of tasks and responsibilities, some related to work (scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, categorizing and responding to incoming e-mail, etc.), and some to personal matters (shopping, organizing the apartment, various other day-to-day needs, ). No children; no pets. We’re not certain exactly how many hours per week we require, but it will not be less than 20, and we’re prepared to guarantee 20 as a minimum, at $20-25 per hour. We’re looking for someone enthusiastic, intelligent and self-motivated who is also an excellent communicator.

There is one other element (as noted in the headline) that applicants need to be aware of and comfortable with: We are both naturists and accordingly often go nude in our apartment. There is no sexual aspect to this at all nor any element of exhibitionism, merely a matter of personal comfort. Anyone who works in our home simply needs to be prepared to see both of us fully or partially naked at various times. This is not an unpleasant sight (we are both entirely ordinary looking, neither staggeringly attractive nor especially unattractive) and should quickly become routine – but obviously this would not be a good position for anyone who is uncomfortable around nudity. (You do not have to go nude yourself at any time, though of course you’d be welcome to if you wanted. You merely have to be comfortable with our doing so.)

If you’re interested in the position, please send your resume and a brief note describing your interest and any relevant previous experience you’ve had.

These guys probably telecommute. I’m never going to look at telecommuters the same way.

Happy Friday!

World markets hit by China rate hike, weak EU data (AP)

Left wing protesters hold a banner in front of the Greek Parliament, in central Athens, on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. World markets lost some early gains Thursday as investors were cautious about European leaders' promise to help Greece handle its crushing debt load. The 16 eurozone nations said they were ready to take 'coordinated measures' if necessary to support Greece. However, European Union President Herman Van Rompuy gave no firm offer of financial aid to Greece, and insisted that Greece hadn't asked for any. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris)AP - European and U.S. markets fell Friday after China tightened its monetary policy to cool off growth and official figures showed the eurozone's recovery from recession nearly stalled in the fourth quarter.

Morning Report: Eurozone Economy Barely Budges

By Caitlin Kenney

Good morning! Here's what we're reading:

-- Europe's Recovery Almost Stalls as Germany Stagnates
Bloomberg reports:

The German economy stagnated in the fourth quarter after recording 0.7 percent growth in the previous three months, while Italian GDP fell 0.2 percent. France's economic expansion accelerated to 0.6 percent from 0.2 percent. Greece today revised down its data for GDP for the first three quarters of 2009, indicating its recession was deeper than earlier thought.

-- U.S. Retail Sales Topped Forecast in January
The Associated Press reports:

The Commerce Department said Friday that retail sales increased 0.5 percent last month, the best showing since November and higher than the 0.3 percent increase economists had expected. Excluding autos, sales rose 0.6 percent, also better than expected, with strength coming from a surge at general merchandise stores, a category that includes big national chains like Wal-Mart.

-- China Orders Banks to Raise Reserve Ratios
The Financial Times reports:

Reserve requirements for Chinese banks will increase by 50 basis points from February 25, the central bank said on its website, to 16 per cent for large commercial banks.

-- Economists Expect Shifting Work Force
WSJ reports:

About a quarter of the 8.4 million jobs eliminated since the recession began won't be coming back and will ultimately need to be replaced by other types of work in growing industries, according to economists in the latest Wall Street Journal forecasting survey.
