Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 6 Feb 2010 | 7:07 am "Padma Shri will make Saif evaluate his worth" - Sharmila Tagore
A leader of a factional political party feels Saif Ali Khan is a 'tapori' and unworthy of getting a Padma Shri.
But the proud and protective mother Sharmila Tagore thinks a recognition of this sort is well deserved for her son.
Says the lovely actress, "I've become fond of Saif as an actor. And I look forward to seeing what he does next. This kind of a recognition encourages an artiste to better himself. Even if you lead a relatively carefree life, a Padma award makes you sit up and say, 'Hey, I've to live up to this. It isn't a film award I'm getting here. The government is recognizing my efforts, and I better live up to expectations.' The Padma Shri will make Saif evaluate his worth and make him think of what the country expects him. I think it's a great pat on the back."
Speaking of awards and recognition in general, Sharmila opines, "The National Awards must have their own identity free of Bollywood domination. It's very important for regional cinema to get its recognition. Now that Antaheen has won the National Award for Best Film it will get a renewed shelf life. Such recognition means a lot to regional filmmakers. You know when Manik-da (Satyajit Ray) made his first film Pather Panchali he had to pawn his wife's jewellery. Nothing has changed, really. Even today a regional film is made on a meagre budget. The National Award means a lot to regional filmmakers."
Speaking for herself Sharmila feels her recognition as an actress has come more from regional cinema than Hindi. "Barring a Mausam for which I got the National Award, most of my prestigious recognition has come from Bengali cinema. Even now, the Bengali film Antaheen in which I play a cameo got the National Award for Best Film. I got a lot of opportunities to work in wonderful Hindi films like Devar, Anupama, Aavishkar and Grihapravesh. Definitely, these were forward-looking films, having said that the regional cinema has so much longevity."
Sharmila feels nostalgia often dictates recognition and adulation. "Zohra Sehgal got a Padma Vibhushan this year. When you're around for a certain period of time, people do love you. All said and done, we Indians are a very sentimental people."
Nowadays Sharmila chooses her films carefully. "Maybe one film at a time. Otherwise I get tired. Getting things done through the Ministry as the chairperson of the censor board is not easy. Also, my work with UNICEF and other organizations gives me more satisfaction. I've a one-to-one with younger people. All this is a strain on 24 hours. Today I'm a more kindred citizen. I also like to travel. Right now as I talk to you I am gazing out of my window in our home in Pataudi and I can see peacocks all over garden. I wouldn't like relinquish this pleasure for more work on hand."
Speaking on her work in cinema being recognized Sharmila laughs, "My self-worth doesn't come from what other people say about me. Recognition or the lack of it doesn't run or ruin my life. Even if it doesn't come I still have a wonderful support system. It's enough that some people like me. I know I'm not in the same league as Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. But when I walk into a room I only feel good vibes. My fulfilment comes not from awards but from watching the peacocks frolicking in my garden in Pataudi. Not that I don't take my work as an actor seriously. I do. Earlier when I didn't like an end-product I dissociated myself from that film. Nowadays you are contract-bound to promote a film even if you don't like it. I find that kind of enforced professionalism to be restricting."Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 6 Feb 2010 | 6:44 am Anurag Basu about his differences with Rakesh Roshan over Kites
Anurag Basu and his producer Rakesh Roshan don't see eye-to-eye on Kites, so much so that the director says he has no inkling when Kites is releasing.
Says Anurag, "I'm just a technician on the film, just like the cinematographer or editor. I know as much as anyone else who has worked on Kites. But I've heard the film is being released on May 14 or May 21. I don't know which date it actually is. But I'm happy it's finally being released."
For the first time, Anurag Basu openly admits there were differences with producer Rakesh Roshan. "I wouldn't call them creative differences. Because we were both creating the same film and moving in the same direction. But yes, Rakeshji's vision of cinema is quite different from mine."
There were constant arguments between the producer and director about how the film was to be shot.
Explains Anurag, "See, Rakeshji was not just the producer of Kites. He's also a very big director with a vast experience as filmmaker behind him. He naturally had very strong opinions on how the film should be shot."
Anurag has learnt the hard way never to make a film for a producer who's also a director. "It's all fine now. Over and done with. I just hope all the hard work is worth the effort."
Kites was taken away from Anurag and given to Hollywood director Brett Ratner to be edited. Anurag was none too pleased with the unexpected shift of power in the creative equation.
Significantly, Anurag doesn't feature in any of the publicity and marketing of Kites.
Says the director, "I still maintain I had no creative differences with Rakesh Roshanji. When I didn't have any hesitation in walking out of my first directorial venture Kuch Toh Hai when I had differences with my producer Ekta Kapoor, why would I not do the same with Kites if necessary, when I've proved myself as a director with Gangster and Life...In A Metro."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 6 Feb 2010 | 6:34 am SRK: Will talk to Thackeray if invited

'Sense And Sensuality' screams the headline of the latest edition of Verve. There just couldn't have been any apt headline than this one as it talks about the 'Sense-ible' and 'Sensual' Vidya Balan, who is doing a fine act of balan-cing her personal life and professional life these days. Way to go, Vidya!
Coming back to Verve, Vidya has never looked so gorgeous before. In her own words, the southern seductress goes onto admit, "I always felt that I could be a temptress and a seductress, but people didn't really want to see me like that. I am a very passionate person... there is no midway for me." There are certain things that this PYT has spoken about which really makes you sit up and take notice. Like this one - "I would have made love to a tree if I had to, because I was driven by the passion to prove a point... for every moment that I had considered giving up on my dreams. I wasn't going to get intimidated by anything or anyone." And when asked about her idea of romance, the subtle lady that she always is, smiles her trademarked smile and blushes saying, "I feel that there is nothing more romantic than standing in a room full of people and there is a silent communication taking place between the two of you."
Well Vidya, we are tad impressed with your ideas of romance. And with Valentines Day just around the corner, we are sure that all the lovelorn birds will surely be searching rooms that are full of people.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 5 Feb 2010 | 6:36 am Kites unreleased promo leaks out on internet
Bollywood is facing a strange dilemma these days. Gone are the days when the filmmakers got scared due to only one villain that hampered their film- the pirated CDs & DVDs of the film. These days, the internet seems to be giving sleepless nights to the filmmakers, with certain parts of a film or sometimes the film getting "leaked" out on the internet.
Just a few days back, it was the entire print of Neil Nitin Mukesh's unreleased film Tera Kya Hoga Johnny that found its way into the cyber space. The latest victim of online piracy is Rakesh Roshan's Kites. This Hrithik-Barbara-Kangna starrer has been in the news since the time it was announced. The filmmakers are now in a sticky situation because the unreleased promos of the film have been leaked out on a popular video sharing site yesterday, courtesy the handiwork of certain miscreants! On an official level, the promo was specially made and scheduled to release with My Name Is Khan, internationally.
The latest update is that the producers have been successful in taking the promos off the site.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 5 Feb 2010 | 6:07 am Birthday Boy Abhishek BachchanAbhishek started his career in 2000 in J.P.Dutta's film Refugee but got the taste of success from 2004 film Dhoom. Since then he has given many big hits to the box office.Source: merinews: Entertainment News Articles | 5 Feb 2010 | 5:08 am "With SRK and Kajol, you automatically gain so much awareness" - Karan Johar
Though Karan Johar's confidence level speaks volumes about the final product that the team of My Name Is Khan has in hands, there is a strong observation that the promotional strategy execution so far is relatively low key. This sounds surprising because typically for any major film, whether it is a Karan Johar-Shah Rukh Khan film or any other big film for that matter, there is always some on-your-face publicity that happens for weeks at stretch, if not months. This is why can't help but question Karan whether it has been a conscious call by his marketing and promotional team to keep things low for MNIK?
"Not really", promptly replies Karan, "We haven't consciously decided to do any such thing. On the contrary I have done maximum marketing for this film when compared to my two films like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The whole idea is to keep things sensible than let them go way beyond a prescribed and self controlled limit."
Commenting on the 'herd mentality' (in his own words) of many a filmmaker who has gone overboard with the marketing and promotion of their films in the recent past, Karan wishes to stay away from over-marketing. "What does it all add to eventually", he questions, "The entire window of marketing has changed today. Earlier, it was as simple as TV promos, followed by interviews and voila, your film is right there in theatres for people to watch. But today, so much seems to be happening for every other film."
Reflecting on the state of affairs, Karan goes on to challenge excessive marketing for a film. "My question is why? Is that really required when the window of marketing is changing for so many movies? Today, best awareness is created in the last 2-3 weeks of the film's promotion. Just because the world out there is probably doing something like that for 2-3 months instead, I should not be blindly following them, right?"
Meanwhile he also has his own take on affairs when it comes to added hype and buzz around the film.
"When you have actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol working in your film, you automatically gain so much from the awareness front because audience out there knows the worth of these actors. Also, given their track record and popularity that they have gained over the years, you are not required to show any desperation as a filmmaker to gain any added attention. After all audience is aware about the people associated with the film and how this team has delivered in the past. These are the very factors that make me comfortable about the box office reception to MNIK", says Karan.
Well, with just a week to go for the film's release, it isn't going to be a really long wait to see what My Name Is Khan eventually goes on to say. The answer would be loud and clear on whether a controlled promotional strategy worked for the film, if the love story indeed turned out to be the most integral part of the film's narrative and last but certainly not the least, whether the film actually delivered what it promised? After all with such reputed names involved, My Name Is Khan hardly has any room for errors and who other than Karan is a best judge for that.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 5 Feb 2010 | 3:29 am "Am I really 34? I feel I'm 23; that was my age when I entered movies" - Abhishek
Abhishek who turns 34 on today doesn't feel his age at all. "Am I really 34? I feel I'm 23. That's the age that I came into movies. I feel the same anxiety and excitement facing the camera this birthday for Abhinay Deo's film as I did for J.P Dutta saab on my 23rd birthday."
The year begins with the shooting of Abhinay Deo's film and ends with Prabhu Deva's film, a first for Abhishek since it would be his first full-fledged action flick.
"I've done action films like Zameen, Dhoom and Run. But nothing like what Prabhu has planned for me," says Abhishek excitedly. "Yeah it's a wonderful year. And I better make sure I don't let my family myself and my audience down."
This has got to be Abhishek Bachchan's busiest year ever. He's just wrapped up Mani Ratnam's Raavan and is in the process of wrapping up Ashutosh Gowariker's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se. He's now shooting for Abhinay Deo's film tentatively titled Crooked. Abhishek then jumps to Tarun Mansukhani's Dostana 2, followed by films with Rohan Sippy's, Abbas-Mustan, Anees Bazmee, Neeraj Pathak and Prabhu Deva...all to be released, shot or completed before the year is through.
Phew! So has Abhishek turned into a certifiable workaholic? Even on his birthday on Friday Abhishek was shooting. And his birthday was brought in on the sets of Crooked. "What to do? If I can't be with my immediately family for my birthday I can at least be with my extended family on the sets. I'm shooting round-the-clock. It's not a time when I can afford to be lackadaisical. Not when I've done television for the first time and discovered a terrific connectivity with the audience. The response to my TV show 'Bingo' has been overwhelming"
His television debut has boosted Abhishek's confidence. "I want to dedicate my 34th year to consolidating my career as an actor and building my rapport with the audience. I know I've the most exciting range of directors and assignments this year."
The last year Abhishek had a thinner work-load. He was shooting Raavan through most of the year. "And for a Mani Ratnam film giving up the experience of doing a variety of other roles is definitely worth the while. 2010 is relatively crowded with no space. And I'm enjoying every bit of it," says Abhishek emotionally.
Today Abhishek feels he is more equipped to face the camera than before. I remember shooting with J.P. Saab for my debut Refugee when I was 23. I was so raw and inexperienced. Today I'm in a position to contribute actively to the process of making the films that I am in. And I do. If I am not comfortable enough with a director to participate in the process of creating a film I'm working in then I won't work with him."
After doing a serious bone-cruncher with Salman Khan, Prabhu Deva is all set to direct Abhishek Bachchan in an out-and-out action film. The film will have the kind of stunts that Abhishek or for that matter any other Bollywood actor, has never done.
The preparations are on. But Abhishek isn't talking about them. "Every year I try to make sure I'm working on my birthday. I don't know why. But to me shooting on my birthday is very comforting. Of course I love spending the day with my family. And as soon I pack up on Friday evening, I'm rushing home to be with my parents and wife. But it wouldn't be a happy birthday for me if I'm not working. Every year since I started my career in 1998, I've made sure that I'm shooting. Only last year I missed shooting on my birthday because I was in New York promoting Delhi 6.
