Paris Hilton Doesn't Care About Robert Redford's Scorn, She Went to Sundance Anyway And Grabbed Some Swag

Three days after Robert Redford declared Paris Hilton and everything she represents — the "ambush marketers," swag, paparazzi, the general atmosphere of publicity in service of nothing but itself — the bane of his Sundance Film Festival, she was seen picking out free snow gear in Park City, blissfully unaware of being attacked, and unconcerned when told about it. "So many people use my name as an example for everything, good and bad," she said while browsing the Oakley Learn to Ride "gifting suite." "I can't get too upset about it." Besides, she didn't see his point: "I now have sixteen brands that I need to market and promote, so from the perspective of a businesswoman, I don't see anything wrong with it."

Hilton was in Park City for a film, too: She appears as an expert on fame in Adrian Grenier's documentary Teenage Paparazzo, which premiered at the festival. Yes, she partied, but it was to promote the movie. Duties fulfilled, she was determined to learn how to snowboard, or at least pose for some pictures looking like she was trying to. A skier since she was little, she claimed, Hilton had attempted snowboarding a couple of times at the urging of her boyfriend, The Hills' Doug Reinhard, without much success.

As she walked around the Oakley suite, Hilton subjected each item to a rigorous mirror test: lips glossed and pouted, hip cocked. In short order, she had collected white pants with a turquoise jacket; pink-framed goggles; pink-and-black leather gloves; and black-and-white men's boots, size 9.5 (she had whispered she was a women's size 11, but they didn't have any). She took a single sip of a smoothie from the lounge's co-sponsor, Muscle Milk, declared it "really good," and set it aside. Her publicist whispered in her ear. "She wants me to mention where we're staying," she said, and began reciting, "It's the St. Regis in Deer Valley. The rooms are excellent. Ski in, ski out, infinity pool, spa."

Clothes on, it was time to pick out a snowboard. "What's the best size for someone who really sucks?" she asked, laughing, then rejected one for being boyish green. "Can't I have something that's at least a little pretty?" she asked, pointing to a Roxy board with colorful swirls. Strapping in, she put a hand on her hip, beamed for the cameras (both Oakley's and her own) and squealed, "I got the pink one!" Hilton's "lesson" consisted of asking the pro one question — "How do I stop?" — and taking off before he could answer. Her balance was surprisingly good, aided by her arms outstretched like wings. Then she snowboarded straight into a giant orange net.

Mel Gibson vs. Josh Duhamel: This Weekend's Box Office Battle For the Bottom!

To truly understand this weekend’s opening-movie matchup of Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness and When in Rome with Josh Duhamel, you must first refamiliarize yourself with the concept of “tragic irony,” which Websters defines as “incongruity between a situation developed in a drama and the accompanying words or actions that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play.” Why do we bring this up? Because this week’s two big openers are a cop movie whose star is now best remembered for screaming drunken anti-Semitic slurs at a cop, versus a romantic comedy starring a guy dogged by rumors of philandering with an Atlanta stripper. Ta-da, tragic irony!

The result? Closely-held audience data by market-research firm Nielsen NRG that has been shared with Vulture shows that both Gibson’s and Duhamel’s films will run a distant second and third to James Cameron’s Avatar. Despite trying to mimic Fox’s sleeper hit Taken in both its posters and release date, Warner Bros.’ Edge of Darkness is both relatively unknown and unpopular with moviegoers — even when compared to its equally flaccid competitor, When in Rome. The NRG data shows that only 7% of people surveyed yesterday had what is called "unaided awareness" of Darkness (recognition of the movie just from its title); only 6% said it was their first choice film to see this weekend.

By comparison, Disney's romantic comedy with Duhamel and Kristen Bell has twice the unaided awareness (12%), but that doesn't mean people want to see it. Only 2% said it's their first choice. To put that in context, the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' Dear John doesn’t even open until next weekend, but it has “definite interest” from 37% percent of those surveyed, 10% more than Rome.

Ironically, the one thing that may actually help Gibson’s movie, say studio marketing chiefs, is young women Tweeting about how much they dislike When in Rome. Last September, for example, MGM had been forecasting a $15 million opening for its remake of Fame. “But when east coast girls started Tweeting that they didn’t like it, we literally saw it shut down across other [earlier] time zones,” said one production insider. "Those Tweets literally shaved $5 million off our entire weekend.”

Obama at the GOP Retreat, In Under Two Minutes

President Obama addressed the collective House GOP at their retreat in Baltimore earlier today, spending most of his time alternating between calling the Republicans out for their purely political strategy of blanket opposition to basically everything he does, and trying to convince them to cooperate instead. After Obama gave his speech, he took questions from the assembled Republicans, effectively and confidently swatting away objections to his health-care plan and budgetary policies. But by the time it was over, he had clearly made little headway on the whole bipartisanship thing, however. Watch the most important moments in this two-minute montage.

Alicia Silverstone on Time Stands Still, her Clueless Legacy, and How Her Period Affects Her Love of New York

She's no longer a virgin who can't drive.

Alicia Silverstone is one of those actresses so inextricably linked with a role that it's hard to imagine her as anyone other than Cher from Clueless. And yet — and yet! — Silverstone's garnering great reviews for her performance in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Time Stands Still, written by Donald Margulies and directed by Daniel Sullivan; Silverstone plays the event-planner girlfriend of a much older magazine journalist, played by Eric Bogosian. We met Silverstone, now 33, at Pure Food & Wine near Union Square; in addition to acting, she's a big-time vegan and recently wrote a vegan cookbook. Over Master Cleanse-Tinis we spoke to her about being on Broadway and her Clueless legacy.

You were on Broadway eight years ago, with Kathleen Turner, in The Graduate. How is it being back in New York?
I spent the first week of rehearsals, every morning and every night, looking for an apartment. You know how people say New York is hard? It’s hard! My experience in the past was different. I had a driver. I was younger. It just felt easier. The whole thing has been super fun and super stimulating, but I feel like every day takes a ton of effort. It’s like, you think landlords would care about what goes on in their buildings. Oh, there’s a gas leak? They don’t care. It’s been hilarious and interesting. Not all hilarious though. When I had my period, I thought I was going to die.

At the beginning of Time Stands Still, your character, Mandy, has a bit of Cher in her—she’s bubbly and seems a little superficial.
You can compare the characters in that Cher was really well intentioned, but not really clued in to a lot of what was going on in the world. But that would be a simplification of Mandy. Cher was a teenage girl and Mandy is a professional person who runs entire events. She meets her lover at a launch party for a book on Darfur. Just like everybody, she’s had pain, but she’s not going to war. For comedy’s sake- — the play is a comedy — there’s the contrast between her and the other characters, who are more intellectual.

Do you get tired of people associating you with Clueless?
It’s actually really pleasant. This is really weird: I was getting waxed, and the woman doing it was in her 30s. She said Clueless was her favorite movie of all time, and she had just introduced it to her ten-year-old daughter, who now loves it. It’s kind of sweet that there’s this generation now sharing it with their kids — like how my mom and I were watching Thorn Birds together.

Is your husband here with you?
My husband is coming on Sunday. I miss him a lot. When I was younger, I could go a lot longer without him. He’s a musician—he’s doing an album with his band. But to make a living, he also does commercials, coaches little kids in basketball, and he does a radio show.

Did you grow up vegetarian?
No I was a total meat-eater, are you kidding me? I was 21, and when the word health came up, it meant, ‘Oh, you’re telling me to lose weight.' I had quite a bit of pressure about my weight and stuff. So I said, ‘Fuck you. I’m going to eat whatever I want. I don’t care.’ I just totally rebelled—I was anti-health. My love for animals is what saved me. And once I started eating vegetarian—after two weeks of not eating animals — my skin changed drastically, my eyes got really light. I had brittle nails with those white calcium marks. Those all went away. I started to get really slim. My body just went, ‘Whoo!’

Do you approach your job any differently now that you're in your 30's?

I've worked for so long, since I was a little girl. My homework in my life right now is to try to really rest. And not rest, like, I'm done, but rest, like, find the balance in your life so that each day is more beautiful and not a race to get to some place. There was a lot of unhealthy stuff in my life, a lot of unhealthy people. My attention since Clueless has been on family, relationships, activism, the planet, and my career. But then I started doing a lot of theater. And that's what I love. It's just this amazing magical thing that's just so stimulating and so real.

'Housewife' is 'a born-again virgin'

Danielle Staub, the polarizing star of "The Real Housewives Of New Jersey," is turning over a new leaf:

Dear Kelis,

You look like an ass. Don't take that the wrong way, but you look like a donkey in this costume, and it is purely owing to the clothes rather than your lovely figure. It pains us to break the news to you, because we and the rest of the fashion world covet those Alexander McQueen hooves shoes on your feet, and have sick dreams in the night about putting them on and trying to walk around the city in them. That said, we must all look up to you for wearing these shoes out and not falling down, a task previously accomplished by Daphne Guinness and Lady Gaga. Yet therein lies your problem: You are not Lady Gaga, and this attempt at avant-garde fashion doesn't compare to her get-ups. The ears crown of fake thorns on your head is like a sad attempt at Gaga's signature bird's nest for the face or unicorn hairdo. And the latex bodysuit is so close to your skin tone you look almost naked, which is how an animal might frolic through a field. And the gray tail — an astounding Über-trend fusion of gray hair and the ponytail braid — might make a great whip for unruly party guests, or lasso for the bartender when the open bar gets too hectic, but generally distracts from everything else you have to offer. Especially the shoes, which should be the stars of this ensemble. You don't have to try to one-up Lady Gaga's style to be successful! It might get you attention, but have confidence that your other gifts are worthy of shining more brightly.

The Sopranos + Where the Wild Things Are = A Video You Cannot Refuse

We don't know what we did to deserve it, but the Internet has been so very, very good to us this week. We were fortunate enough to have our Monday begin with a hilarious video of Brendan Fraser pointing and clapping his way through "Hollaback Girl," and now that it's Friday afternoon, the Internet gods have bestowed another choice gift upon us. Frankly, we can't believe that it took this long for someone to remix footage of James Gandolfini's character in Where the Wild Things Are with some of the more profane audio outbursts of Tony Soprano, but that doesn't mean that we're not thankful that it finally arrived. Audio, as you might imagine, is slightly NSFW, so be careful out there.

Why 'Ugly Betty' will be missed

Just when I thought the week couldn't get any worse, ABC decided to cancel "Ugly Betty."

Used to be, if you hitched your wagon to the right star when you were an assistant, you were pretty much set for life—or at least as long as you could take working in magazines. When your boss got a new job, you came with, often with a promotion. Eventually, it was implied, you'd end up high on the masthead. The mark of a true consigliere is that he (or she) doesn't actually want to be the editor-in-chief; the consigliere is happy in his or her role as trusted confidante and advisor, without having to deal with the responsibilities (and bullshit) that come with being top dog.

But at least in the magazine world, the model is crumbling. With fewer jobs to go around, everyone's looking out for number one—not necessarily number two. And so some consiglieri get stuck in the wilderness. I asked an ex-consigliere why he thought the breed was dying out. "If there are no great editors, there are no consiglieres," he said. Too true.

Mischa Barton's latest show, The Beautiful Life, was canceled two episodes into its run, but girl's back on her feet already, with a guest spot on Law & Order's greatest-ever spinoff. She filmed her appearance — as a prostitute named Gladys hiding a deep dark secret — last week, but the episode won't air until March 3. We know you can't wait until then, so click through to see Barton hanging with detectives Benson and Stabler right now.

Johnny Weir to Switch to Faux Fur After Death Threats

This week, figure skater Johnny Weir came under fire for wearing a costume with a tuft of real fur on the shoulder. His costume designer came under fire, too, which Weir found severely upsetting, yet not upsetting enough to renounce real fur outright. However, now that he has received hate mail and death threats, he's switching the real fur on the costume in question to a faux variety. He doesn't want the animal-rights people to mess him up at the Olympics, which is exactly why we suggested he make nice with them the other day. We've seen the havoc they wreak at Fashion Week, and he would have no chance of maintaining his poker face if they stormed the ice yelling, wearing suits that make them look like skinned rabbits.

Former Edwards aide Andrew Young's new book reports, among many other things, that when talking to his mistress, Rielle Hunter, Edwards was known to adopt a distinctly sexy phone demeanor.

From the Times excerpt:

Edwards always used the lawyer's trick of speaking in code so he could claim "plausible deniability" if it was ever needed. She would say she loved him and spoke so loudly that I could hear her on the phone. He would say only, "Me too." And if she asked him if he missed her, he would say, "That's correct" — pronouncing it "cohhhhhhrect" — but never, 'I miss you.'"

Ew. Mark Sanford's e-mails about his mistress holding two magnificent parts of herself in the faded glow of night’s light never sounded so good.

Crotch-rocketingly unimpressive.

The absolute key to taking a sick day is taking two.

Some manager at some point in my working career said, "If you're sick enough to take a sick day, you'd better be sick enough to take two." And by God his theory actually works.

No one believes that on Thursday you suddenly fell sooo ill you could barely dial the phone, but yet on Wednesday you were seen laughing like a glue-snorting hyena after your buddy in production sent you an action motion pic of the company tight-ass fellating a fax machine, to then have the audacity to return on Friday barely eeking out a weak-throated semi-cough, but ostensibly appearing with undeniable "fun for me and fuck you" crumbs mashed in the corner of your mouth. Naw, if you're calling out, you better do it with flair, sound like the second coming of the plague has infested your body, and perfect your waxy, depleted, "I spent two days vomiting my shoes" look once you return. Just limit it to two days, though, kids. If you go for three you'll need a doc note.

Hi Brian. Welcome to New York, the city you just walked through to get to my house. On the way, your feet trod over, and picked up, in no particular order, every species of feces, from rat shit to dog poop to horse dung to bum spoor, saliva from no less than 237,000 tubercular assholes who believe it is unhealthy to swallow their own goddamn spit, jism from people who like to fuck whores in their cars and then discard their used condoms on the sidewalk, rotted fast food, urine, industrial solvents, leakage from garbage bags, thousands of strains of e. coli, well, you get the drift. Now take off your shoes and shut the fuck up.

Speaking as a Jew, though not on behalf of all Jews, let me say that some Jews are meant to be in the show. And some are meant to run the show. That is all.

It's like a time lapse photo of Robert Moses sodomizing a city.

Limbaugh did actually say that, but it was after a meal at Red Lobster.

IT'S OVER! Now please to get your drink on.

Shia LaBeouf Knows What It Takes to Land a Job at Goldman [Method Acting]

Shia LaBeouf did tons of research in preparation for his role in Wall Street 2. He opened up a brokerage account with $20,000 and has seen his portfolio grow tenfold since then, thanks to the expert trading skills he's picked up along the way. And he's learned the secret to getting a job at Goldman Sachs, which he's now prepared to share with the world: "I talked to a lot of Goldman Sachs people, and one of the requirements of getting a job takes place in the first five minutes of an interview. They take you out to eat. The minute the menu hits the table, if you can't order within 30 seconds, you don't have the job." [DB]

Vinny From Jersey Shore to Maybe Go to Harvard Later

There was this grey area and they fucked the lot of us. They didn't fuck Jack White, but they fucked Gwen, fucked Johnny Cash and fucked Kurt ... It's just gross. More Designers Migrate to Milk This Fashion Week

A disturbing trend has taken hold of the Tents this season. The Kardashians are showing their Bebe line there next month during Fashion Week. QVC will stage a runway show in the Tents with an overly complicated seating and bathroom procedure. And though it's taking place in the Bryant Park Hotel, Spanx are showing their new women's and men's (yes, man Spanx are happening) lines during Fashion Week, too. So that whole geographic region of Fashion Week is going downhill. Bryant Park? Well, we can think of another kind of park it's calling to mind more and more lately!

So it makes sense that Milk Studios will have even more shows this season than last season, as designers increasingly choose to show there, where it's cool, instead of at the Tents, where it's less so. Milk will have 32 presentations and shows during Fashion Week, up from 25 last season. Additionally, Montauk's Surf Lodge is setting up a pop-up restaurant, "with chef Sam Talbot debuting new delicacies for a Thursday-through-Sunday menu," according to WWD. Gwen Stefani is hosting a cocktail party there. McQ by Alexander McQueen is showing there. BMW is sponsoring. And what's going to happen when Fashion Week moves to Lincoln Center in September? Fashion people seem to have an innate fear of uptown, so Milk's Fashion Week could grow even more.

"Where I come from, we believe in something we call a 40-day break after the baby," the unfamous mother of Matthew McConaughey's 3-week-old child tells Us magazine, who not only recorded these words but repeated them to us and now we are repeating them to you because we are too brain dead from reading them to do anything else. "You kind of respect all the hard work your body has just done and give it a break. For these 40 days, you really take it easy. By that I mean no sex, light, healthy food, no trips to the gym. Then, after 40 days, you are good to go." [Us]

Barclays Executive May Have Succeeded in Weeding Political Correctness Out of Kid’s Private School

Back in December, Hugh "Skip" McGee, the head of Barclays' investment-banking division, wrote an insane letter to the headmaster at his son's private school, the Kinkaid School in Houston, in which he demanded that two teachers, a female history teacher and a "gay female coach," be fired, along with the principal who supported their dangerous feminist notions. (Their crimes: suggesting that a performance that Skip's non-gay son and his football-playing friends were to perform in drag was "negative gender stereotyping" and telling girls in the class that belonging to the spirit club was pandering to the football team, respectively.) It seems like he got his wish — on two counts, at least — because this week, the school sent out a letter to parents announcing the resignation of Upper School principal Mickey Saltman and physical education director Cindy Gough.

From the letter, which was obtained by DealBreaker:

This week, Upper School Principal Mickey Saltman announced his decision to retire at the end of the current school year. While I had hoped Mr. Saltman would return to Kinkaid for the coming school year, I respect his decision fully. Mickey Saltman has served Kinkaid with great distinction for twelve years, and his career in education-first (and always) as a teacher, then as a department chair, and finally as a principal at two first-rate independent schools-spans nearly fifty years. At Kinkaid, he has led a superb faculty with skill, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, and he has served as a wonderful role model for our students.

Additionally, Cindy Gough recently announced her decision to resign from her position as Director of Physical Education, Athletics, and Wellness effective at the end of the current school year. Ms. Gough has provided strong, energetic, and thoroughly positive leadership to the school over the last four years, contributing significantly to the Department and to the school, and all of us are deeply grateful to Ms. Gough. We will miss her very much, and we wish her well in the future.

Now, Skip just needs to get that history teacher to cut the "Women Get The Right To Vote" chapter out of the texbook, and everything at Kincaid will be ship-shape.

Evan Lysacek Is Vera Wang’s New Figure-Skating Muse

The fashion world of male figure skating is particularly fraught, having a much-mocked reputation for sparkly unitards, not to mention Johnny Weir’s fur debacle. But World Champion Evan Lysacek, whom we profiled in this week’s magazine, has paired up with designer Vera Wang to try to create a more fashion-forward image for the sport. Wang, a former figure skater herself, who also designed costumes for Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan, has taken Lysacek on as her newest ice skating muse. She designed the sleek mock tuxedo he wore during his World Championship win.

We visited Wang’s showroom during a fitting with Lysacek, in which he tried on two different outfits: one, a black unitard with silver bejeweled snakes, and the other, also all black but covered in subtle sequin stripes and anchored with feathers near his hands. “Evan has such a great eye,” Wang told us, as she studied Lysacek, standing with his arms outstretched. “It’s much more complicated than you’d think,” she said. “You have to make sure he can move and bend and all the pieces stay anchored on.” Lyacek was flanked by two tailors, pinning another snake to his costume. “Vera’s been such a good mentor to me, and she knows so much about skating,” said Lysacek. “As far as our style, we kind of have the same aesthetic and taste in clothing, the same thought about movement and character. We almost had too many ideas. These are the ones we started working on when we first started together, and now they’re now finally ready,” he said.

Wang tries to attend Lysacek’s competitions herself to make last-minute adjustments, but if she can’t go, she sends one of her trusty tailors. “My worst nightmare is that something goes wrong with the costume that makes Evan fall or get distracted,” she said, which is why the tailors spend extra time securing the feathers to Lysacek’s sleeves. “If I have to wear something, I’m going to wear something a top designer would do for me,” said Lysacek, gazing proudly at Wang. Johnny Weir's "Poker Face" routine can't quite top that.

Taylor Lautner’s Less-Buff Twilight Co-Stars Are Upping Their Game

Ever since Taylor Lautner miraculously went from total weakling to strapping, eight-abbed man-beast during the short break between the shooting of the first two Twilight movies, his male co-stars have been inspired to play catch-up. Last night we ran into Peter Facinelli, who plays Carlisle Cullen (Robert Pattinson's dad) in the series, at an absurdly long-named event in Los Angeles (Calvin Klein Collection & L.A. Nomadic Division Event in Support of L.A. Arts Month and ALAC, in case you were wondering). "I'm really excited about Eclipse — we did a lot of training for that movie, like six weeks of fight training," he told us. "It was funny because it became almost like an in-house competition and everyone was always in the gym or working out. Sometimes we’d work out like three times a day. One time, I was in my apartment and I was going down to do my workout, and the elevator doors opened and Kellan Lutz was [in there] doing push-ups. I was like, 'Okay, Kellan, you win! You win the competition!'"

Another Paterson Proposal Fails to Impress [Politics]

151442

Gov. David Paterson could probably save $2.1 million a year by not having 200 state troopers assigned to protect him.  Instead, he recently proposed that New York legalize "mixed martial arts" (or ultimate fighting, the "sport" that features two people beating each other to a pulp inside a cage)—a move Paterson says would generate $2.1 million a year in additional tax revenue. It turns out that most New Yorkers aren't ultimate fighting fans: According to a new poll, 68% of state voters say they're opposed to the idea. Too bad the pollsters didn't ask if people would be more inclined to support the proposal if the matches involved politicians in Albany. That could be a real moneymaker! [NYDN]

Sallie Krawcheck Is a Wildly Famous Celebrity, According to Sallie Krawcheck

Okay. In the past few years, a number of executives on Wall Street have become household names, and Lord knows we have done our part to ensure that Lloyd, Jamie, and Vikram emerge as the Christy, Claudia, and Naomi of the financial crisis. But now other executives, lower down the totem pole, are making perplexing claims as to their fame. Specifically, Sallie Krawcheck, the Citigroup wealth-management chief who left for Bank of America after a tiff with CEO Vikram Pandit.

While it is true that journalists and bloggers and people in the financial community may be familiar with Krawcheck's story, the Fortune story that once upon a time dubbed her the "last honest analyst," etc., it is hardly what you would call "popular knowledge," which renders the following claim she made to the Times "Business" section highly suspect:

“I don’t think I set foot in a restaurant where some woman did not come up to me and thank me for getting knocked around and going back in,” Ms. Krawcheck, 45, recalled in an interview at Bank of America’s corporate office in New York. “It was unexpected and quite fantastic.”

Now. We're fans and admirers of Ms. Krawcheck and appreciate the cracks she's put in the glass ceiling and what have you, and we don't mean any disrespect, but the fact is, this is a lie. She is a Wall Street executive, not J-WOWW. We sincerely doubt that she is unable to set foot in a restaurant without getting mobbed by admirers, unless by "restaurant" she means the BofA cafeteria. So take it down a notch, sister. And don't even think about trying out for cheerleader next year.

New Yorkers Don’t Think Cage Fights Are the Way to Close the Budget Gap

Part of Governor Paterson's proposal to close New York's $7.5 billion budget gap is to legalize and tax mixed martial arts — more awesomely known as "ultimate fighting" — which has been banned in the state since 1997. As our colleagues at The Sports Section wrote earlier this month, the argument is that the sport isn't much more violent than boxing, and could rake in $11.5 million per event for the government. But a new Marist poll shows that New Yorkers are overwhelmingly not in favor of the idea. A lowly 22 percent, in fact, approve of Paterson's plan, while 68 percent are opposed. If our athletes are going to beat the shit out of each other, they should do it wearing gloves, like civilized people.

Kate Moss Was Just Kidding About Those Gray Streaks

Kate Moss went to a party Wednesday night with freshly dyed gray streaks in her hair. But apparently those weren't permanent. Yesterday she was spotted leaving the Balmain boutique in Paris with her hair entirely back to blonde. Given her fleeting attachment to the gray highlights, maybe fashion freaks won't run out and copy them as they do Moss's every style statement. This would be a relief because, as with shorts and tights, it remains to be seen whether gray highlights can truly do the average person any favors (though we're going with probably not). But perhaps it's worth noting this: She has been spotted out in white jackets at least three times over the last week. She and Mary J. Blige have more in common than we thought!

Back to blonde for Kate Moss as she ditches her unflattering grey highlights after just one day [Daily Mail UK]

TrumpTown? [Real Estate]

151437

On Monday, the owners of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village gave up control of the sprawling apartment complex after defaulting on its loans. (Tishman Speyer and BlackRock paid $5.4 billion for the property at the height of the housing bubble; it's now worth less than half of that.) Now the Post reports a bidding war is breaking out as various real estate companies look to take over control of the complex, and—as if Stuy Town residents haven't suffered enough the past few months—one of the contenders is none other than Donald Trump. Important Info About Penis Dot Net

This may be the greatest and most urgent email we’ve ever received to our tips line:

I left the last part in just because “LLC” makes me laugh. The Penis.net people are making sure to maximize their tax-exemptions.

Also, the difference between 1 million Google searches for “penis” and 2.2 million Google searches for “penis” is astronomical — I had no idea there was such a wild month-to-month swing of amount of times people type “penis” into Google. I guess it depends on the weather — in the summer, it stays light out late, so I’m outside a lot, but in the winter, there’s literally nothing else to do besides going home and typing penis into Google.

Also also, our company would be interested in penis.net “for obvious reasons”? Which obvious reasons would those be? My overwhelming gayness or just my general enthusiasm for penises? If we’re gonna do business together, some clarity would be appreciated.

So yeah, long story short, anyone know a good place to get “CEO, Penis.net” business cards printed up?

Penny Arcade Will Buy a Panhandler Booze If It’s Cold Enough

Name: Penny Arcade a.k.a. Susana Carmen Ventura
Age: 59
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
Occupation: Performer and writer of performance, theater, poetry, and essays. She’ll be reading from her career retrospective, Bad Reputation, next Wednesday, February 3 at Spoonbill and Sugartown Booksellers, and Thursday the 4th at the St. Marks Bookshop Reading Series at Solas.

Who's your favorite New Yorker, living or dead, real or fictional?
It is a tie. Jonas Mekas, John Vaccaro, Taylor Mead, John Giorno, Judith Malina, Dorothy Day, Emma Goldman, Bina Sharif, Edgar Oliver, Diana Vreeland, Sister Helen Keliher, Bobby Beers, Wallace Shawn, and Sarah Schulman.

What's the best meal you've eaten in New York?
Chanterelle, July 2008.

In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job?
I think, talk out loud to myself, make myself laugh, play music, dance around, do research, answer/write e-mails, and eventually put it onstage.

Would you live here on a $35,000 salary?
Of course, most artists in New York live on much less than that.

What's the last thing you saw on Broadway?
Passing Strange, the musical by Stew that transferred to Broadway from the Public Theater. It won a Tony for Best Book. Douglas Durst came close to bringing my play Bad Reputation to Broadway in 2000 ... Is it time yet, Mr. Durst?

Do you give money to panhandlers?
Yes, and I use my intuition case by case, and don't question what they use the money for. "Oh, they will just buy booze," some people complain. It's 10 degrees below zero! What would you buy if you are freezing and homeless?

What's your drink?
Pellegrino mineral water.

How often do you prepare your own meals?
I try to eat at home five to six days a week … I love to cook from scratch for myself.

What's your favorite medication?
Dr. Joseph Bonovoglia’s NeuroSoma treatment at Columbus Circle Physical Therapy and Wellness.

What's hanging above your sofa?
A red wall full of paintings and photographs, a black crow, and a glass mausoleum containing the ashes of the artist Jack Smith.

How much is too much to spend on a haircut?
N/A. My friends cut my hair.

When's bedtime?
I go to sleep on a continuum around the year … right now it is 4 a.m.

Which do you prefer, the old Times Square or the new Times Square?
The real Times Square! Obviously the old one … not the new Disney Epcot version!

What do you think of Donald Trump?
Donald Trump is the twentieth century’s P.T. Barnum! He has made full use of
the adage "A sucker is born every second!"

What do you hate most about living in New York?
The suburbanization of New York and the loss of distinct neighborhoods.

Who is your mortal enemy?
Mediocrity, cowardice, and people who lack personal integrity.

When's the last time you drove a car?
August 2009, when I drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco and back on Highway 1.

How has the Wall Street crash affected you?
Not at all.

Times, Post, or Daily News?
I scan all three dailies. It’s my grown-up version of the back of cereal boxes!

Where do you go to be alone?
Herald Square at 5 p.m., Grace Church in the afternoon, Wall Street on Sunday mornings.

What makes someone a New Yorker?
A real New Yorker has a personal relationship with the streets of New York.

Matthew McConaughey Classes It Up on the Beach For Once

Nothing Is More Romantic Than Awkwardly Proposing At The “When In Rome” Premiere

Congressman Steve Israel Declines to Join In On the Ford-Gillibrand Fun

A spokesman for Democratic Congressman Steve Israel — who was, er, persuaded by the White House earlier last year not to challenge Kirsten Gillibrand — says that, despite some calls for him to change his mind, Israel is "definitely not going to run for Senate." At the same time, according to the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, Israel also commissioned a phone poll in recent weeks and "[n]o one could explain to us why Israel would poll if he wasn't re-thinking his decision not to run."
