Sonal Mehta to get 55 lakhs as out of court settlement for Rann

Ram Gopal Varma In spite of Ram Gopal Varma's loud protestations about the writer's claim being nothing more than an attempt to make mileage just days before his film's release, to avoid an impending stay order on the release of his Rann this Friday, Ram Gopal Varma has apparently been persuaded to make an out-of-court settlement with the writer Sonal Mehta. Though nobody is mentioning the sum, Mehta has asked for and apparently is likely to get a sum close to Rs. 55 lakhs as out-of-court settlement. While the film's producers have in principle agreed to pay up the compensation to avoid the film's impending released being delayed, director Ram Gopal Varma in a sudden outburst of indignation, is reluctant to cough up the substantial amount of money. According to him, this settlement would amount to succumbing to last-minute pressure tactics. The next court hearing is on Wednesday morning. But for all practical purposes Sonal who apparently produced SMS messages and e-mail in court on Monday to prove her charges that Rann was indeed based on her idea/script, has triumphed and will on Wednesday walk away with a hefty amount as compensation to facilitate the release of Rann. Co-producer Madhu Mantena says, "We're in the process of making an out-of-court settlement. But Ramu is dead against it. However, the prints of Rann have to be sent out and we can't afford any more delay." As for Ram Gopal Varma all he will say tersely is, 'The case is still subjudice and not going to be settled till Wednesday. On principle, I'm against this kind of compromise. But we have no time and cannot delay our release."

Arshad Warsi plans to produce films regularly

Click above for movie stills: Ishqiya Arshad Warsi is enjoying playing the role of a producer. The talented actor has already completed his first film, HUM TUM AUR GHOST, which is slated for a March release. The film was initially titled KAUN BOLA. "Yes, but HUM TUM AUR GHOST sounds cute. It evokes interest in the film," Arshad smiles. The film was completed quite some time back, but the release date was pushed forward intermittently. "That's because I wanted ISHQIYA to come before HUM TUM AUR GHOST. But ISHQIYA got pushed ahead because Vishal Bhardwaj wanted to bring KAMINEY before ISHQIYA. And KAMINEY got delayed due to the producers versus multiplexes strike. That explains the delay in the release of HUM TUM AUR GHOST," Arshad states. Arshad plans to continue producing films. "I enjoyed the process of making this film. In fact, I plan to produce films regularly. Whether I star in them or not, is besides the point," Arshad states confidently.

Hollywood biggies in 'Teen Patti'?

After winning accolades in PAA, Amitabh Bachchan will now be seen in two diverse films [RANN, TEEN PATTI], enacting equally diverse roles. While Bachchan enacts the role of a media moghul whose word is considered gospel truth in RANN, he enacts an equally challenging role in TEEN PATTI. It's a known fact that Sir Ben Kingsley also plays a crucial part in TEEN PATTI, but there are murmurs that Hollywood heavyweights such as Pierce Brosnan and Richard Gere also appear in cameos. "That's completely true. There's no reason why we would keep them under wraps if they were part of TEEN PATTI. But the fact is, they aren't," TEEN PATTI producer Ambika Hinduja tells me. Another news doing the rounds is that the film has gone over-budget, from Rs. 12 cr. to Rs. 20 cr. "Not true again. I'd like to clarify that the budget of the film was never Rs. 12 crores. Also, the film was completed within schedule and there was no question of the budget hitting the roof," Ambika sets the record straight.

Veer runs into trouble as HC issues notice to Salman, producer and director

Today when there are well above 250 films releasing every year in Bollywood, finding a unique concept can be a task, and every now and then, there are claims of copyright infringement being made. The latest film blamed for copyright infringement is Veer, and the makers of the film are accused of lifting some concepts from a certain book without any approval from its author. The Salman Khan starrer that released recently has been dragged to court for copyright violation by author Pavan Choudary. The plaintiff claims that the idea and concept that India should not be a 'Sone Ki Chidiya' but 'Baaj' (hawk) has almost been identically copied and adapted from his book 'Trilogy of Wisdom' and that the makers of Veer are using the same for their commercial gains. Justice V. K. Shali of Delhi High Court has since asked actor Salman Khan, the film's producers and also director Anil Sharma to file their response on the allegation levelled by author Pavan Choudary, who has sought damages of Rs. 20 lakh from them. The author also pleaded that the court should stay the screening of the film.

"You will find variations in journalism & some of it has gone to its zilch" - Gul Panag

Gul Panag It is a natural gift of the human psyche to be able to terrify itself and by qualification learn how to terrify others in order to control them through manipulation by fear. The new barons are those from the Press and the Media....and of course, director Ram Gopal Varma. Read on. Their control over the minds of the populace is greater now than at any other time in the earth's history. Media communication is the latest power in the history of suppression and like all suppressive devices it appears to offer that which it deprives you of; freedom of speech and interchange of information. Today, the power of the media moguls has grown in tandem with the increasing innovation and effect of communication technologies. Today, the Media barons built an industry of immense wealth and power and refined their persuasive methods to a fine technological pitch. Today a well-oiled intelligence gathering machine of global proportions is run by a 'new aristocracy' which has established the industry as a multi-national controller of the minds of ordinary people. To make matters more interesting and intriguing, Ramu's Rann is all set to enhance the media's position and produce an unseen oligarchy of immense power. The film, which deals with the media, politics and industrialist nexus is all set to release on January 29 with a battle-cry of one-upmanship. For starters, Gul Panag, who will be seen in Rann opposite Riteish Deshmukh, voices her opinion on the film, the political nexus, journalism and the question to which we all are looking an answer to: Will we ever know the truth? Has journalism gone to its zilch now? Not just journalists, but most of us have preconceived notions. They are fine, as long as you're in the business of reporting facts and making opinions. When your job is to report facts and only facts, and leave the people to form their own opinions, if you come from a point of view where you already have a preconceived notion, then you can imagine how much objectivity there's going to be in that kind of reporting. As a nation, we are a very prejudice lot, judgemental; we live in a society which believes in poking their nose in other peoples business. But the question is: Where do our reporters come from? The answer is: From the same society. So yes, you will find variations in journalism and some of it has gone to its zilch. You will find variations in journalism and some of it has gone to its zilch But our readers are to be blamed too. Right? They prefer Page 3 girls over credible columnists That's how it is. That's how the people are formed and are evolved. But the same people do read Vir Sanhvi and Shekar Gupta columns, the two most credible writers we have. But the fact is, whether you like it or not, we do flip the entertainment pages first. They are more interesting. Which is why, if there was an amalgamation of entertainment that actually tries to make a difference, we'd have achieved our objective. But we don't let that happen. People come with a preconceived notion that just because we come from the entertainment world, we have no interest in anything else. As an eye grabbing section of the society, from the CEO's to the doctors and lawyers, everybody opens the entertainment pages. If only there was a little bit of effort put in by the fourth estate, in trying to see what these people really want to do and stop painting them with the same brush of disdain and condescending thoughts that they look at them with, there might be some good that comes out of it. Coming back to the film, how convincing does Rann look? I don't know. The beauty of all Ram Gopal Varma films is that the action is always happening outside the film. That's his style of cinema. He talks about something and then something happens outside. In the film, you'll just see the before and the after. That is indeed for an extremely evolved audience. You're not spoon feeding the audience with what's going on, which is great. Rann is Ram Gopal Varma's attempt to highlight the nexus that does exist between the politicians, media house and the industrialists. Top political parties have interests in the media houses, allegedly, which is quite visible by the fact that they don't really cross a particular barrier when it comes to reporting about the politicians. In reference to industrialists, so many of them own a large stake in publishing houses, electronic channels. Thus biased news looks convincing to all of us. The beauty of all Ram Gopal Varma films is that the action is always happening outside the film So in an all male dominated section of films, media, politics and industrialists, how significant is Rann for you? Not so significant. I mean, you cannot super-impose a woman in a film like Rann, except for the fact that Suchitra Krishnamurthy who works in a news channel in the film. But it's not about significance. It's about my gut instinct and when I heard the story, this was the film I wanted to be a part of. I've always admired Ram Gopal Varma. The more time I spend with a director like him, the more I understand how intelligent he is. Rann is not a story of domestic lives. It's a story about people's work place. Gul Panag Do you think politics inspires the media? Yes. 80% are our news stories are linked to what's happening in Delhi, after all, that is the power centre of this country. And that is something that each one of us is involved in. That's a single time thread that involves every single Indian because we elect these people, we put them in power and they are our servants. So yes, politicians are public servants and we need to keep track of what they're doing. If we don't know what's happening in our country, we are failing as a democracy. Politicians are public servants and we need to keep track of what they're doing And how safe is our India now? As safe or as unsafe as it was before. It is not possible to protect against terrorism when the perpetrators of terror are ready to kill themselves. It's just not possible. We can only contain the damage that they inflict. You spend a fortune, buy a page and the news is yours. All we need is more customers, right? Well, that's pretty much what it is. A lot of leading newspapers sell their space. But that's business. Music takes a front seat in any of RGV's films Yes, he does have a very good ear for music. I think music in a film like Rann brings out the feeling of nationalism and patriotism. It does evoke a very strong emotion, which is why I really liked the banned song: 'Jana Gana Rann'. What's interesting is the fact that we all relate to what's going on. You're a writer yourself. Why don't you voice your opinion through your writing? For me, it's really when I feel like writing, I write. Not otherwise. Honestly, I don't enjoy the pressure of deadlines. That's why my blog comes to rescue. I wrote 600 words on my blog from the airport just because I felt strongly about something. You've got such a gorgeous smile and look beautiful that you can surely anchor any news channel. Thank you. But I think there is always room to be heard if you're lucid in your own thoughts. Most people don't know what they're talking about which is why they don't make sense. It's also the way you speak that's critical. I've been to places where extremely eloquent people have spoken but they are just so boring to listen to but what they are saying is so interesting but not how they're saying it. I think there is always room to be heard if you're lucid in your own thoughts Will we ever know the truth? I'm reading a very interesting book at the moment called 1984 by George Orwell. It's about a system where truth is obliterated. Even the past has been altered to suit the present. There was this move to alter history text books to favour Hinduism. So there has always been an attempt to super-impose what you think is favourable to you. Gul Panag Not from Gul Panag's point of view, will Rann work for a citizen of India? Today, films are actually a function of economics. You make a film at a certain budget. No matter what people said about Agyaat, it worked because of the shoe string budget it was made on. Technically, the film worked. You make a Blue and it doesn't work. Rann is not made on a tight budget, it's not an extravagant film, it's not gone over its allotted days of shoot and it got packed up before the actual time of pack up. Eventually, there is a market for a film like Rann but it may not be the entire country. As long as the budget is tight and the right people watch the film, the film will work. There is a market for a film like Rann but it may not be the entire country As long as Ram Gopal Varma is there, controversy is bound to happen Controversy is as much media created as supported by the person in the centre of a controversy. If you refuse to comment on a situation and are not easing it out, you're increasing the controversy. Define Ram Gopal Varma in one word I can say intelligent but that'll be too simple. I'd say, very discerning. He is not a guy you can make small talk with.

SRK gets Moon crater named after him

Shah Rukh Khan For those who thought that the fans of Tollywood (Tamil film industry) were one crazy lot, we are sure that this piece of news will just not be a 'Moonwalk' (quite literally) for them. Its general knowledge that Shah Rukh Khan is called the 'King' for reasons enough that will fill all the pages of an Encyclopedia book. And the fan following that he has is nothing short of hysteria. Well, if that wasn't enough at all, there is a piece of news that is bound to make you sit up and take notice. The news is that one of SRK's biggest fans had purchased (you read it right) a piece of land in SRK's name on Moon. And the good news is that, the International Lunar Geographic Society (ILGS) has now approved of the same. The crater in question is located on the moon's Sea of Tranquility and is the largest of the four Arago craters, positioned directly south of the main crater. It is said that the crater was named after SRK on his 44th birthday in November last year, and was only recently approved by the International Astronomical Union following a spate of petitions from SRK fans worldwide. With this, SRK has proved quite literally, as to what 'feeling over the moon' really means. Way to go, SRK!

Madhur Bhandarkar joins Twitter

Madhur Bhandarkar While the likes of Gul Panag stay on to be the trail blazer in evangelising Twitter in Bollywood, last one year has seen a horde of Bollywood celebrities waking up to this networking tool. Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Mallika Sherawat are some of the many regulars on Twitter. Now Madhur Bhandarkar has succumbed to the Twitter mania as well. The man has created an account for him and can't help singing praises about it ever since he joined. "I used to wonder what was so special about this entire 'Twitter' talk before I was introduced to it. I can't help but being hooked on to it ever since I joined. I guess in Bollywood, especially for us filmmakers it is really something that one can't escape from", says Bhandarkar who is quite a regular now and has been sending out half a dozen tweets a day. He can be found at mbhandarkar268. "I am sure Twitter is going to be really beneficial in days to come", says Bhandarkar, "It's a great way to stay connected to your friends, followers and cinema enthusiasts in general. This is just the right way to get instant feedback and reactions from people once they watch a film of mine or anyone else. In the fast paced life that we live, this is turning out to be a blessing."

"National Award is about making all those guys proud who've stood by me" - Arjun Rampal

Arjun Rampal Arjun Rampal is sitting quietly with his wife Meher in his mammoth balcony. Then he gets a beep on his mobile and tries to reach for the phone kept on his coffee table. His eyes pop out. Meher gets a bit worried by seeing the expression on her husband's face. He gets up and replies to the text and awaits the reply from the sender. Meher again asks, "What's the matter?" And yes, the second time around, Arjun had to answer. "I've just won the National Award". Both start yelling and screaming, jumping with joy. It was the afternoon they'll cherish for the rest of their lives. God Bless! But hey, the excitement wasn't limited to them two. On the same night, Arjun invited some of his close friends to be a part in his celebration for winning the highest honour in the field of acting. The stampede included Rock On pals, Farhan Akhtar, Prachi Desai, close friends Chunky Pandey with wife Bhavna, Saif Ali Khan popped the champagne bottle in grand style, there was Sohail Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sajid Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, and many more who rocked till four in the morning. The next day, I meet him at the same place, the same balcony where the breaking news was heard. Arjun Rampal looked like nothing had happened the previous night, like there was no National Award news which he read on his blackberry. Rampal looked the same as before - calm, composed and controlled. And that's what makes him Arjuna: a warrior who never gave up, a warrior who fought till the end and a warrior who believed in seeing the one and only one eye of the fish...which he calls...the passion for cinema. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent met the warrior who won and will keep on winning - Arjun Rampal. So, has it all paid off in the end huh? A National Award at the age of thirty five plus and working for almost a decade now. Yeah. My mother always used to tell me that there is no substitute to hard work and perseverance. You keep going at it and do not stop. You continue even if you haven't hit your goal. I think, it's about sticking to what you've always wanted to do, loving it, and giving it that respect and honesty. I think that was the phase when Rock On and many other things were happening in my life. I was not doing films and was waiting for the right ones to come. I've done enough of mediocre films and it's time to move ahead as I've had enough of that. I've done enough of mediocre films and it's time to move ahead as I've had enough of that Has success found a new meaning today? See, success and failure for me are like husband and wife. Both are hugely overrated. How many light bulbs did Thomas Edison blow before he got the right one? (Laughs). But the thing is, he stuck to it because he wanted to create a light bulb. If he had given up on that, who knows, we would've waited for the bulb for another decade. That's success. I don't do films for more money or awards. I do it because I love doing them. Just like Arshad is known for his single best performance in Munnabhai, you too are known for in Rock On. I'm sure people are going to talk about you and the film for another decade. Well, let's hope I break that mould with my next film (laughs). Once I've done the film, it's gone and I don't live in it any more. I've nothing to do with it. Arjun Rampal But I'm sure you must've re-lived the Rock On days yesterday? Yes, of course I did. The feeling of having won the National Award is still sinking in. It's like my sins being washed away. It's like all the bad stuff I've done is being forgiven. That's the kind of honour you feel when you win an award like this. It's like the revival of your confidence and your beliefs of whatever that you want to do and say, "I just want to do the right stuff and work with the right people". I don't want to compromise now. That also means that I'll be doing far less work now (laughs). The feeling of having won the National Award is still sinking in. It's like my sins being washed away. It's like all the bad stuff I've done is being forgiven You seem all set for a big innings now. Yes I am. I don't want my career to be like a dice, that you're rolling it and sometimes a six or a one would come. I should roll the dice in such a way that only six should come. That's the kind of effort that should go into it and will stay with me for life long. Come March, you'll be walking to receive the award from the hands of the President of India. Can you believe it? I think it'll be the most humbling moment and a memory which will be cherished forever. I'm looking forward to March and am excited about it. But then, I'm still an actor and I'll still be making mistakes and will have to come back to the drawing board and learn how to remove those mistakes. Will Arjun Rampal be taken ten times more seriously now? The seriousness of anything and everything will reflect from the kind of work one keeps doing. It took me a long time to understand my craft and realise that this is the kind of work I want to do. I wasn't scared of pushing the envelope. To sustain, you need to be serious about your work. I am serious about my work and I won't work with people who are not serious about it. I want to work with people who are passionate and as committed and dedicated to giving you what you are going to give back. Serious filmmakers have always taken me seriously and that's why they've never given up on me. My fans too have stood by me and have taken me seriously and that's been encouraging. It took me a long time to understand my craft and realise that this is the kind of work I want to do You've worked with Priyanka Chopra who has also won the National Award. Yes. She was great in Fashion and many congratulations to her. What was really wonderful about this National Awards was the fact that the top three films winning awards were commercial films; they were successful films with commercial actors and were big releases. They swept the National Awards because they were different in their content and were pushing the envelope. Plus, these weren't the films that came in the bracket of small films with budgets of three to four crores. I respect the National Awards more now because they've started to take commercial cinema seriously. Arjun Rampal How much would you love to curse Abhishek Kapoor for not coming to your party and for loving him to make Rock On? (Laughs) I love him too much and I'll never curse him. Gattu wasn't here because he was on a flight to Goa on the day I kept a party for selected friends to celebrate my National Award. I think I'll fly down to Goa tomorrow and party with him. I'm so proud of him and he's the guy who truly deserves this. He is the same guy who sits at every award function and says, 'Damn, I didn't win the Best Film Award'. But today he has won the National Award for the Best Film. That makes up for everything. I'll only curse Gattu if he doesn't do Rock On 2.

"I'm pretty certain, Ranbir will win National Award for Raajneeti" - Prakash Jha

Prakash Jha Though he hasn't received any National award this year, Prakash Jha just can't stop preening over the fact that his Raajneeti features the maximum number of National award winners in its cast, Arjun Rampal being the latest. Says Prakash, "When I heard Arjun had won the National award for Rock On, I was ecstatic. He is fantastic in my film. But it's Ranbir I'm most hopeful about. I hope, in fact I'm pretty certain, he'll win the National award for his performance." Ranbir plays an US-educated scion of a political dynasty who has to reluctantly return home to shoulder his family's duties. Says Prakash, "This film will take Ranbir to another level. In fact everyone is outstanding in the film. And why not? I've a line-up of National award winners in the cast, from Naseeruddin Shah and Nana Patekar to Manoj Bajpai and Ajay Devgan." Incidentally, Prakash can't stop preening over the fact that his Raajneeti is the biggest multi-starrer since Sholay. "I think it'd be impossible to get so many stars under one roof for any other director." As for Katrina Kaif, Raajneeti in many ways is her film. "The girl has breathed fire and passion into her role. From the way she metamorphoses from a young vivacious girl to the way she walks to give her public speeches as a politician. Audiences won't be able to believe the transformation of Katrina Kaif. I won't be surprised if both Ranbir and Katrina win National awards," says Prakash confidently.

Kangna, Farhan, Arjun, Madhur on their National Award triumph

Kangna Ranaut's parents burst into tears when they heard their daughter had won the National award for best supporting actress in Fashion at the 56th National Awards announced on Saturday. Said Kangna on Saturday, "There's a mini-celebration in my house, though my parents were crying when they heard about it. At 23, I seem to have cracked the highest cultural award for the country. What more can I do? I should just pack up and go back to my home in Himachal now with my parents." Kangna was also very happy for her co-star Priyanka Chopra who is the USA. "I messaged her to say how happy I was for both of us." Equally euphoric was the mood at Arjun Rampal's home. "I didn't know about me winning the National award for Rock On until the executive producer of my new under-production film Stepmom called and told me to put on the television. Winning a National Award is a dream come true. It's also scary because now I've to go further up the scale of excellence. Everything I do will be compared with Rock On." Farhan Akhtar the leading man and producer of Rock On which won the National Award for Best Hindi Film was amazed at how far the film had come. "I had now put Rock On completely at the back of my mind; what with all the hectic promotion I'm doing for my new film Karthik Calling Karthik, pre-production to my sequel of Don and my sister Zoya's next film. Suddenly the National Award reminded me of how far Rock On had come. I'm very proud of my director Abhishek Kapoor and my co-star Arjun Rampal. Incidentally, debut films are lucky for me. I made my directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai and my acting debut in Rock On." Madhur Bhandarkar who personally didn't win any National Award was very happy for his two actresses in Fashion. "I'm really happy for Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut. Altogether this makes 11 National Awards for my cinema."
