To start with, one honest confession: We are just sick and tired of listening to the statement that Ranbir Kapoor is the flavour of the season. That's the reason (and trust us, that is THE REASON) for us to not follow the rest, when it comes to describe the best. That's why we have twisted the statement as Ranbir Kapoor is the season of the flavour, be it the flavour of love or romance, this man is at it all! Well, if that wasn't enough, our man Ranbir is on the cover of the latest edition of MW.
In this issue, Ranbir talks about his journey into Bollywood and also the year gone by. He says, "It's been more than a good year. Not because of the fate of the movies but I worked all year round. I worked everyday. Wake Up Sid was a hit, Ajab Prem... was one of the biggest hits of the year, while Rocket Singh- SOTY is my best work so far, according to me." For the man who has seen only films and arc lights since childhood, he says, "The reel world is the world I've existed in. The outside world is the unreal world." While on the subject of Bollywood, Ranbir touches upon one of his most awaited films Raajneeti, about which he says "Raajneeti is the first grown up man character I play. Usually, so far, my roles have been that of coming-of-age boy. This film is a political, dark film and it was a complex part!"

The American press has gone ga-ga over Anil Kapoor. The Los Angeles Times writes, "The most promising (actor) this season is Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), president of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan, who is negotiating a peace treaty with U.S. President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones). He's regal and decent."
Says the Entertainment Weekly, "The dapper Hassan, played by the wonderful Anil Kapoor, who really should go by the name of Fantastic Sam because of his incredible head of hair..."
And the Hollywood Reporter just can't get enough of our Kapoor. "The best addition (to this season's episodes) is Anil Kapoor, best known stateside for his role as the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" host in Slumdog Millionaire." He plays an idealized version a Middle East leader with an Elvis-style pompadour on the verge of signing a historic peace agreement. It's a painfully standard 24 part, yet he owns each scene he's in."
Anil Kapoor is known to be such a thorough professional. So why are his co-stars in his just-premiered American series 24 upset with him? Anil, you see, got invited on the prestigious Today Show where none of the 24 actors, not even Keifer Sutherland, has ever been invited.
Explains Anil, "You see, 24 is series by Fox. And the Today Show is on a rival channel NBC. No actor from a Fox show is every invited on the Today Show. I guess I was an exception because after Slumdog Millionaire I'm seen to represent the Indian diasporas in the West. It's a humbling place to be in."
And Anil is trying hard to be humble. When Anil Kapoor left for LA last week, he had promised his family in Mumbai that he would bring back four episodes of 24 which premiered in New York. But he came back empty-handed.
Anil laughs in embarrassment, "I had promised them. And I'm sure Fox would've given the episodes to me. In fact they gave the first four episodes to every journalist beforehand with a secrecy clause. So I could've easily asked for the same because my daughters Sonam and Rhea and my brother Sanjay were all keen to see my television debut. But I just couldn't ask. I was too shy. Can you believe it?!"
And now the only way Sonam and the rest of the family gets to see Anil Kapoor's debut on 24 is if they download the episodes. Says Anil, "I believe the episodes can be downloaded. Also 24 will be telecast on our channel AXN, but few months later. I think episodes featuring me would be telecast much sooner."
Anil, in fact, is making efforts to bring the series to Indian viewers simultaneously with the rest of the world. Anil is very happy with the way his television debut was received. "It was overwhelming. I made sure that the Indian media was also invited on the red carpet. The impact of my appearance on 24 is yet to be gauged. But I guess the show will add Asian eyeballs to the already-popular series. See, you've to understand television in the US is not the same as television in India. There're big stars on American television who have actually refused to do movies."
Anil is now committed to do a film or two in India. "I've a commitment with Ashtavinayak for two films. Indra Kumar and Apoorva Lakhia are working on two ideas which I really like. I may do one, or both depending on how the projects scripts shape up. But before that I've two films
No Problem and Aisha as a producer. I need to concentrate on that."
As a parting shot I ask Anil how he manages to remain so fit at his age. "Aha! I was always lean and thin, much before it became fashionable. Was Ayesha Takia spotted in a burqa after marriage? Have her in-laws clamped down on her freedom to act in films? These are the rumours that one hears in the film industry.
Ayesha Takia is more amused than exasperated by the attempts being made to put her into the retired-actress' bracket after marriage.
The word being spread is that Ayesha has married into an overly conservative family where acting is perhaps not permitted. "I'm amazed at the games people play. The other day someone asked me if I've started wearing a burqa after marriage," laughs Ayesha. "Far from feeling clamped I now have the freedom to do a lot more things than before. My parents-in-law are cool about my business ventures with my husband and my film career."
"And that's so ridiculous," says Ayesha with a laugh. "Farhan and I went around together for five years before marriage. So there goes the conservative card. Suddenly after we make it official, I hear all kind of rumours including the fact that I'm out of Revathy Varma's film and that I've been replaced by some other actress."
Says Ayesha, "I've never felt the need to grab roles. I've got what I wanted. And it will continue that way. I always felt Wanted would be the first big hit of my career. Ironical that it should come now after my marriage. And I've got more to do in it than the leading lady in a Salman vehicle would be expected to. In fact I was blown away by the way I was presented. And why should I give up a dream role like the one in Revathy's film? She's new to the Mumbai industry and quite nervous about these controversies."
Revathy Varma and Ayesha's mother are very close friends. "Revathy comes home regularly. We all laugh at the way the casting is being questioned by people who probably have nothing better to do."
Ayesha now intends to focus on new business venture. "I started working in films when I was only 15. And I just realized I've been at it since then. I need to venture out. It's time to try out new things in life. Today a young woman has so many opportunities to do so many things. I'm fortunate to have a name and a face that's recognizable. I want to use that to my advantage and start a clothing line by the middle of next year."
Ayesha, her mom and sister Natasha are going to be partners in the garment business. Laughs Ayesha, "All three of us are very excited about doing the clothes line. We love fashion it's basically for the girls in the family."
Ayesha's husband Farhan will be there to help his wife and her family with the clothes line. "Yes, Farhan's there to help us women in every way possible."
Marriage hasn't changed Ayesha. "I'm the same. I always will be. Post-marriage I'm exactly the same. That could be because I was seeing Farhan from long before.
Psychologically, we were married long before. It would be an understatement to say that Arshad Warsi is one of the Indian Film Industry's best actors. He's had more comebacks than the proverbial boomerang. Well, at least, we can tag him the 'comeback kid'. Ask any of his fans their favourite Arshad Warsi film and you'll unanimously hear "Munnabhai" and his one sided love affair with his fans. But that's him and his tenacity that has served him for so long in Bollywood. Come Ishqiya on January 29 and opinions might just change. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel welcomes the new 'kaajal eyed boy' of tinsel town and chats about everything from raw cinema to raw sex, condoms to censor board, the wild Vidya Balan to the sexy Naseeruddin Shah and his soon-to-come most romantic moment: a journey from Delhi to Ladakh on his beautiful bike with his gorgeous wife Maria. What Ishqiya!
Everything is falling in place for you in Ishqiya. Is this the re-invention of the lost Circuit?
I don't know about that. I hope so. You know what? I like to work hard on characters. So far, touchwood, it did happen like that. People have appreciated me more in Circuit's role than in any of my other roles. Audiences have always liked whatever I've done but somehow they got stuck on to my one role. I hope that people like me in Ishqiya because I play quite a character in it.
Is 'Raw film' a new word to describe 'Polished cinema'?
I think so. You're right. You don't get to see this genre pretty often. You only get to see the regular fluffy stuff and then suddenly an Indian western flick like this happens which people stand up and take notice of. I'd call Ishqiya a 'western'.

The kaajal looks quite sexy on you boy!
(Laughs) The kaajal wasn't a problem to apply. But if you say I look sexy in kaajal, I'll have to appreciate that (laughs). I think putting the bronze and mud all over my body to make me look tan also had a bit to do with my sexy image in the film. 'Dirty' is the new 'Sexy' (laughs). I hope the kaajal becomes a fashion statement in India. I mean, you'll still find in Bhopal, men applying kaajal under their eyes. Kaajal really looks rugged and cool on a man.
We quite rarely see a beautiful face now-a-days. Vidya's beauty is too tempting, isn't it?
Vidya is raw in Ishqiya. She is a wild woman one dreams of. Vidya is a Lara Croft, she is a rockstar and that's her sexuality. In the film, she looks very desirable and stunning. As an actor she has done a phenomenal work in Ishqiya. She is subtle, to the point and stuck to the character. As a person, she is the most beautiful human being I've come across - warm, friendly, caring and a doll. It's very rare that you come across a girl like Vidya in today's time.
And it's very rare to come across an actor like Naseeruddin Shah too?
Absolutely right. He is a tycoon. I love working with great actors because it makes you work harder and better. Naseer saab does that. He comes in the frame and everybody is on their toes. You tend to succumb to his talent and energy. He has a great temperament and barely does he give a re-take. That's good because we finish quite a lot of work in less time and are not tired. He is an emperor.

Did you see a shadow of Vishal Bhardwaj in Abhishek Chaubey's direction?
From the first day of the shoot itself, I found Abhishek to be a very confident director. Abhishek just took over the proceedings from day one. He knows what he's doing.
Has your wife seen the film?
No. Maria hasn't seen the film and my kids are definitely not going to see the film. I think I'll have to delete the kissing scene and then show it to Maria (laughs).
Don't you feel that a lot of 'beeps' in the dialogues actually ruins a good scene?
I can't blame the censor board for what they chop. They are only doing what our society and our politicians are forcing them to do. I think the censor board is far too intelligent. They just have to follow certain norms and code of conduct. We are the ones who are the hypocrites. We latch on to the culture very rigidly and fail to get our point across. It's very naïve, silly and regressive to be offended by the word 'sex'. They should sell condoms openly and be open about the issue. It's like the more you stop something, the more people do it. There was a time when gold used to be smuggled left, right and centre. But when they cut the duties and all, nobody smuggles gold any more.
Ishqiya has gone lucky with the songsâ¦
Oh yes! They are topping the music charts. 'Dil Toh Baccha Hai' is such a different track that we felt only the older generation would like it. But the whole nation is going mad over it. It was shocking. It just shows that there is no limitations to get out some quality stuff. 'Ibn-E-Batuta' too rocks. It's my favourite number from the film.
Do you think the overseas audiences are ready to accept films of such nature and genre?
They better be. But I'm sure Ishqiya will be liked by the overseas audiences. The cultural levels of NRI's is much higher than the people in India. I've seen all the NRI's who are more Indians than Indians are in India. Yes, the film is a little bold but it shows you an India that exists. Ishqiya is real and not a fantasy.
Can you recall the most loveable moment you've spent or are going to spend with your wife Maria?
We've travelled extensively throughout the world. We are travel freaks and have holidayed quite a lot. I'll tell you something that I haven't told anybody. My most romantic moment is going to happen in some time. I used to go for a long drive on my bike. Now that I'm too busy with my work schedule, I've made up for the time I've lost on my bike. I'm going to travel from Delhi to Ladakh on my bike with my tent and Maria. That's so romantic. There'll be me, the vast landscape, open roads, beautiful weather, even beautiful bike and my dearest wife. We'll put up the tent; have coffee, chill, etc.
How much did you and Naseer saab swear on and off the sets?
(Laughs) Honestly, not even once. We never used swear words. Though, Vidya was abused a little bit (laughs). There are some words that are used so often in our daily lives that if we use them in our films, I feel, it's absolutely fine. So some swear words here and there is fine.
Do you find Naseeruddin Shah sexy?
I think he is a hot man. He is the kind of person who is intelligent and expresses his sexuality....and women find that really endearing.

The news that has been doing the rounds for sometime now is about the search for the heroine of Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder's flick Tees Maar Khan. The film has been in news since its announcement. First it was Akshay replacing SRK as the lead, followed by the 'namesake' casting coup, wherein Akshaye Khanna was roped in for the film.
As far as the heroine for the film was concerned, the rumor mills went overboard with names that ranged from Sonam Kapoor to Deepika Padukone and likes. But, according to Bollywood Hungama's confirmed sources it is neither Sonam, nor Deepika, because it is Katrina Kaif! When we spoke to Shirish to confirm the news, all that he said was, "I cannot say anything right now. I can only speak about it in a couple of days." Our source also went onto add that the trio of Akshay, Katrina and Farah have shot a cover page shoot for a daily (which is supposed to be out in a couple of days) to announce the coming on board of Katrina as Tees Maar Khan's leading lady.
With Katrina coming on board, expectations are bound to be sky-high about Tees Maar Khan, considering the hit track record that Akki-Katz have delivered in the past, like Namastey London, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng to name a few. What remains to be seen is that will Tees Maar Khan follow suit or will it create a new track record?
A freelance journalist and a budding writer Sonal Mehta has taken Ram Gopal Varma and the producers of Rann to court, apparently for breach of copyright.
Ramu hugely preoccupied with the pre-release and promotion of Rann says, "I first want to ask Ms Sonal Mehta one thing. Why has she waited till just a little more than one week before the release of Rann to make her claim? And secondly has she seen even one frame of Rann to decide the screenplay is similar to her idea?"
To his credit Ramu doesn't deny getting a story idea from Sonal Mehta. "She was a part of my production house 'The Factory', 4-5 years ago when I was making James. She came to me with an idea for a film on the media which I didn't like much. Still I said she should try to get a leading man to agree to do the film if she wanted to direct it. I didn't like the names she came up with. And there ended the project."
Ramu admits Sonal Mehta's claims came to him as a complete surprise. "But only to the extent that I had completely forgotten her existence. However, making such claims in the court days before release has become fashionable. This is her way of getting publicity. And I'm most happy if I can be of help."
Ramu's sarcasm apart, the producers of Rann, Madhu Mantena and Sheetal Talwar intend to counter-challenge Sonal Mehta's claim in court.
Says Ramu, "I'm not the least bothered. Because I know there's no truth to her claim. The writer of Rann is Rohit Banawliker. There can be a hundred takes on the media. I've made so many films on the underworld. Are they similar? Rann has nothing to do with this lady's idea." In his endeavour to promote his new film Veer, Salman Khan is going all-out to prove he's the new-age Manoj Kumar of our cinema
Suddenly, as it were, Salman has transformed into the perennial patriot promoting nationalism and brotherhood at any given cause.
According to sources close to the Khan, Salman will now be a part of the Republic Day parade on 26 January to not only participate in the event but also to comment on the whole concept of freedom and independence in the contemporary context.
According to a source, "This is Salman's golden opportunity to clean up his image. He wants to wipe out his anti-establishment image. He has made up with the media. Now he wants to project himself as someone who cares deeply for his country."
Producer Vijay Galani confirms Salman's presence and participation at the Republic Day parade in Delhi on January 26. Says Galani, "Salman will be seen live on a Hindi channel at the Republic Day parade talking about what freedom and independence mean to Indians."
Salman has been preparing extensively to hold forth in Delhi on 26 January. Says a close friend of the actor, "Salman is tired of being portrayed as the enfant-terrible. He wants a clean image. He's told his family and friends he'd like to set the right example for his younger fans."
The theme of Salman's Republic Day comments in Delhi would be, 'Do Not Misuse Your Freedom.' Sonu Nigam recently recorded two songs free for Krishan Chaudhery & Sunil Thadani's upcoming film Joker. The film, to be directed by debutant Vikram Tuli, deals with a father-son relationship. When Sonu heard the script of the film he got very emotional and returned the cheque due for his song recordings.
The recording took place at Spectral Harmony Studio in Andheri on January 17, 2010 and the two songs he recorded were 'Shukriya' and 'Loorie'.
Joker will see Rajeev Khandelwal and Prachi Desai in lead roles. The film goes on floor in February and it will be Bollywood's first film to be shot start to finish in New Zealand.
Aamir Khan is on a roll. After the runaway success of 3 Idiots, news is out that Bollywood superstar has signed up as the brand ambassador of UAE's Etisalat, India's latest telecom entrant.
The deal was reportedly inked before the release of 3i at Rs 30-35 crore for a period of 3 years. Etisalat will follow Aamir's other endorsements - Coca Cola, Tata Sky and Samsung.
Etisalat has been the telecommunications service provider in the UAE since 1976, while Etisalat DB Telecom India, previously called Swan Telecom, is a new telco set up jointly by Etisalat and DB Realty, headquartered at Mumbai.
Purru Raajkumarr has a small but hugely significant pivotal role in the film Veer. Purru has always been known for choosing his roles very selectively, content even if they are smaller in actual footage, but ensures that he leaves his mark, be it a Mission Kashmir, or a Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, or an LOC or even an Umrao Jaan. Senior directors have invested their confidence in his understated talent (as opposed to his father's flamboyant expression- a natural comparison). But Puru's performances are so very memorable in his independently developed style.
Veer obviously is a huge multi-star cast film and is probably one of the biggest films ever made, by a director who was responsible for making the biggest hit film of the last decade. Says an elated Purru, "Just being a part of this film has been extremely fulfilling. The chance to work with Salman Khan, who not just me, but my entire family loves. There's a cast like Mithun dada, Jackie Shroff and Sohail Khan too. I play Mr. Shroff's son, which I was extremely ecstatic to play. It's great to have a very handsome looking screen father. And who's a Class Act. A brilliant performer. So obviously, I feel very privileged." Adding cheekily, "And dare I say, on screen, this pair (Jackie and me) looks pretty good!"
Progressing with his role, Purru reveals, "The movie is also the story of the clash between the Pindaris and the state. My character has been given to believe that it was the Pindaris who had cheated my father on certain issues and had cut off his hand. And I am operating from a certain sense of vengeance. Rather, of avenging my father's injustice and dishonour, to put it more nobly. It's a completely positive role. My character has a particular sense of arrogance, about him being a prince. This is, remember, from the 1870s and the kings did not mingle with commoners and the lower classes. Besides avenging his father's disgrace, and besides being very hot blooded, his sense of right and wrong are in blacks and whites. There are no grey areas. He has been told to do a particular job by his father and shall bring it to fruition, this is his only aim. He doesn't bring his own mind to it because that's what his father has told him. And this boy has a great depth of character, seen in the love he has for his family."
Speaking of the difficulties in developing the character, Purru says, "It's very, very difficult by virtue of simple arithmetic. There is no time. You don't get adequate screen time to develop it so one does try to add things in gestures and movements, bring certain character traits in the personality which will portray far more than the written word or descriptive. Like there's a song sequence which I'm a part of, and there are no dialogues in that. Its pure emotions I've relied on to convey certain dimensions of my character. So, this aspect makes such roles very challenging and by the same parameters also very fulfilling when you've done it to satisfaction. These are the bonuses you get which make the journey too much fun."
And Salman Khan as a co-actor was a dream to work with according to Purru. "Salman bhai was so good; I was comfortable from day one. They were all very kind, Salman bhai and Sohail and all of them. It was like a bunch of friends working together. Mr. Anil Sharma again is very easy to work with, very calm and composed. He explains the basic idea of your scenes and walks away and lets you do your thing. And a big film like Veer comes with a load of stress for everyone, not just the production. There are timelines which need to be met always. Naturally, the producers are on tenterhooks because it's very easy for such an epic film to go over-budget. And all actors are also simultaneously working on other projects, so there are a lot of logistics that have to be worked out. Under that kind of pressure, completing and delivering a product as big as this is in itself a huge thing."
What shines through is Purru's pride in this film and the confidence that it's yet another window to a beautiful sunrise! It takes a brave man to be an actor, and Purru is no less than Veer!
After having won the heart of his audience with his boyish charms in the bubble gum romantic caper Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, the Gen-Next star Imran Khan is all set to repeat history by capturing the 'readers' hearts by being the cover-boy of the lifestyle magazine 'andpersand'.
If looks could kill, then, this romantic dude would be behind bars for killing the hearts of all the ladies globally, merely with his smile. Getting him to pose in front of the camera today wouldn't have been as easy around a year back. Imran, in his own confession, says "One year ago, if you had asked me for a cover shoot, you would be spending all the time convincing me to look into the camera." Some words those are. Talking of words, Imran also goes onto add that, "Abhay Deol suffers at this more than I do. He is constantly angsty and we hold epic debates on movies. In fact, Anurag Kashyap and Abhay call me a 'Gaddar' every time we meet, saying I am a traitor who strayed from their path of good direction". When one talks of Imran, how can his lady-love be far behind! Talking about his girlfriend-turned- fiancée Avantika; he says "I don't believe in the 'we're just friends' theory. Avantika has been a huge support in my life. How can I dismiss it to keep a certain image?" Lastly, one 'word' from us - Imran looks like a million bucks with those 'specsy' frames!
As we said earlier, some words those are! Imran Khan is definitely the flavor of the season and is undoubtedly here to stay!
In a film industry that is plagued with piracy and other forms of creative and financial vandalism, the downloading of Sudhir Mishra's unreleased film Tera Kya Hoga Johnny nonetheless comes as a rude shock.
The director, shooting his latest film in the freezing winter of Delhi, took time off to speak exclusively to Bollywood Hungama.
"Suddenly the news of my film being downloaded has become bigger than the film itself. This, I must admit, comes as a rude reminder of what lies ahead for our film industry. It's not just piracy. The internet is where we need to look for trouble sources now."
Sudhir was busy shooting on Tuesday. "When I finally heard about my film being on the net, I checked it out. This is not the full and final version of Tera Kya Hoga Johnny. It's a very rough cut. I'd advice all netizens to avoid watching the illegally download version because that's not my film."
Trying hard to keep the annoyance and anger out of his voice, Sudhir refuses to play the blame game with the film's co-producer Tutu Sharma.
"All I'll say," says the tightlipped critically acclaimed director "is that the film did not get leaked out of my office. What has already happened must be avoided in the future. But we aren't letting this go. Complaints have been filed in two police stations of Mumbai and with the Google authorities. This must not happen again."
Sudhir, however is confident that the unfinished version on the internet won't jeopardize the film's prospects. "After Slumdog Millionaire, the West is looking with much curiosity at the slum culture of Mumbai. I had no plans of doing an English version of Tera Kya Hoga Johnny. But everyone who saw it in New York suggested I do it. Every frame in my film has been shot in the slums, lanes and gullies of Colaba in South Mumbai."
Tera Kya Hoga Johnny is an episodic story of a street -child name Johnny. Mishra got an actual boy from the streets of Kolkata to play the lead and even unofficially adopted the boy who now lives with the director.
Neil Nitin Mukesh who features in one of the episodes was blamed for the film's two-year delay in release. It was said that Neil didn't want the film to release because of his minuscule role.
"Now at least everyone should stop blaming me," smirks Neil. "It was said that I delayed the film by refusing to dub for it. Arrey! The film was in sync sound, so there's no question of not dubbing. I'm very proud of Tera Kya Hoga Johnny."
