Balki has put on hold plans of his next feature film until his wife Gauri Shinde, whom Balki met in the advertising world, makes her first feature. "She isn't going to rush her script. And I'm willing to wait," says the director.
Paa is one of the biggest contenders for awards this year but 3 Idiots bagged the Screen popular awards for Best Director and Best Film.
Ask Balki if he cares. In fact he didn't even want to attend the awards. "In all these years in advertising I never went for awards function for excellence in ad-making. Naturally, I thought I'd extend the same attitude to filmmaking. However, Mr. Bachchan and Abhishek wanted me to accompany them for the Screen Awards so I went. It wasâ¦.fun! I was thrilled for Amitji, Vidya Balan, the child artiste who played Vishnu and Arundhati Nag."
As for Balki missing out on the awards for Best Director and Best Picture, he shrugs, "It just means more people saw 3 Idiots than Paa which I gladly accept. I saw 3 Idiots too and had a good time. I thought Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor were fantastic."
Balki is in fact thinking of working with Kareena, after having extracted such outstanding work from Tabu in Cheeni Kum and Vidya Balan in Paa. "I'd also love to work with Deepika Padukone," says Balki enthusiastically.
So would Deepika feature opposite Big B in his next? "Why not?" shoots back Balki. "It all depends on how far you stretch the boundaries of conventionality in cinema. For me there's no point in making feature films if I don't push the envelope. I might as well continue making ads."
After two hugely unconventional successes, Balki is no mood to sit on his laurels. He has already started work on his next film, a comedy written for the Big B in mind.
Shedding light on the laughter that would emanate from his third feature film, Balki says, "Cheeni Kum and Paa were both humorous takes on what people saw as serious issues. But I never set out to make issue-based films. They just happened. I just want to entertain the audience intelligently. My comedy won't be slapstick or situational. 3 IDIOTS is setting new benchmarks in the international market, especially America. Inspired by its superb run in the Overseas territory, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani are toying with the idea of releasing an international version of the film.
The international version will be released after a couple of months. Whether it will be dubbed in English or released with sub-titles [like all Hindi movies do] is yet to be decided. But what the makers are sure of is, it will be released in a condensed format. The film will be trimmed for the international audiences. Big B, Dharmendra and Yash Chopra have confirmed their presence at the 16th Lions Gold Awards. Heralded by the Lions Club of SOL - Mumbai, the second largest club in the world, the proceeds of the awards will be sent to a senior citizen home in Karjat. To be held on Jan 14th 2000 hrs IST onwards, the awards will see a bevy of film personalities walk the red carpet and will be Webcasted LIVE on Bollywood Hungama.
We spoke to Raju Manwani, Multiple Council Chairman, Lions Club, to get an idea of what to expect from the Lions Gold awards this year.
The Lions Gold Awards is in its 16th year. What's special this time around?
The 16th Lions Gold Awards are really special for us because it is the first time Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra and Dharmendra will be attending. Besides, the attendance from the film industry is very good. Secondly, the media, including Bollywood Hungama have also connected very well with us. Your awards are unique because instead of private pockets, the proceeds go to charity.
Yes. All the funds raised through sponsorship of the event will be donated to our Senior Citizens Home at Karjat, which is a cause connected to our heart.

How are the awards different from other industry awards?
Unlike nominations and a jury in case of the other awards, ours is a declared award based of voting by 46 thousand members of our Lions Multiple (group).

After partying the whole night to bring in his birthday on Saturday night, Hrithik took a much-needed break from the shooting of Guzaarish on Sunday to spend his birthday with his wife and sons.
This was the actor's first demand for a holiday from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film. The director gladly complied and shot solo scenes with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
For the party on Saturday night, Hrithik and his wife Sussanne personally called every one of the guests.
Hrithik intends to take a long break after Guzaarish to recover his energies. While he has two other projects this year, there seems to be no sign of the next Krrish film with his father Rakesh Roshan.
Has anyone noticed? Hrithik Roshan hasn't made a movie with his father Rakesh Roshan since 2006 when they did Krrish.
And now it seems unlikely that the most successful father-son filmmaking duo of Bollywood would come together in 2010 as planned earlier.
Says a source, "After he finishes Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, Hrithik has already allotted dates to two other films - Zoya Akhtar's road film with Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol and Vishal Bhardwaj's next which begins in the second-half of 2010."
Where does that leave Rakesh Roshan's plans of making the third part of Krrish? Says a source, "Hrithik is not sure about the feasibility of the Krrish series any more. Not after James Cameron's Avatar. He wants the project to go through a budgetary scrutiny to see whether they can create effects comparable with Hollywood's Avatar and 2012. Otherwise what is the point?"
Rakesh Roshan doesn't deny the fact that Avatar has indeed put a brake on all his plans to make Krrish 3. "I saw the film in Los Angeles. And it certainly made me sit up and re-think about Krrish. But I don't think it is impossible to create effects on a par with Hollywood. We need to budget Krrish 3 intelligently."
As far as starting Krrish 3 goes, Rakesh Roshan admits there's no immediate chance of it taking off. "I am not even thinking of directing my own film until our production Kites is released on May 14. Only then will I seriously start planning my directorial project. For now the next film I direct is Krrish 3. But it may change if I'm unhappy with the script."
What the patriarch of the Roshan empire leaves unsaid is that the father and son Roshan have sat together and discussed the feasibility of doing a lavish big budget film in the light of Avatar and other Hollywood extravaganzas dubbed in Hindi.
Hrithik has made it clear to his dad that there's no point in doing a Hollywood-styled special -effects film unless there's scope and space for the desi counterpart to make an impact at the box office.
