Cower in Fear Before Your Master: Fox News Chief Roger Ailes

Don't worry, he doesn't want to go to your parties.

Our personal takeaway from today's must-read New York Times profile of Fox News head Roger Ailes, by David Carr and Tim Arango: be very, very afraid -- because even Rupert Murdoch comes across as terrified of the uber-paranoid evil genius who turned Fox News into the money-printing machine it is today. And don't let's even start on Murdoch's son-in-law Matthew Freud:

“I am by no means alone within the family or the company in being ashamed and sickened by Roger Ailes’s horrendous and sustained disregard of the journalistic standards that News Corporation, its founder and every other global media business aspires to.”

And that's from a guy described as "the most influential public relations executive in London," so presumably, he was holding back! The only part of this profile that wasn't frightening was this sentence: “I built this channel from my life experience,” Mr. Ailes, 69, said."

69! That's pretty old. Maybe after this profile trumpeting his domination of both media and politics to the world, Roger Ailes can call it a day and retire to Florida.

Harry Reid Apologizes for "Light-Skinned Negro" Remark About Obama in 2008

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized today for a remark he made in 2008, calling Barack Obama a "light-skinned" African-American who didn't have a "Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Wince! The remark was revealed in the book Game Change by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann about the 2008 race (of which we have an excerpt this week about the fall of John Edwards). Reid, who says he has already spoken directly to the President about this matter, apologized, saying:

“I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words. I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments."

Reid's remarks were made in the context of expressing his belief that the country was ready for Obama's presidency, placing Reid with then-candidate Joe Biden ("articulate and bright and clean") among politicians who have blundered into offensiveness while ostensibly attempting to praise the president with a classic "one of the good ones" well-intentioned, but totally undermining and racist statement. Old people, man. Will they ever learn?

The late-night hosts are milking NBC's Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien time-slot conundrum to the point of enough already, but at least last night we got a twofer when NBC's Carson Daly showed up as a surprise audience member on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live to ask about his NBC show, which, like Jimmy Fallon's, will presumably be affected by time-shifting. We promise this will be the last post about this today, as along with other late night watching Americans, we're meta-exhausted.

Conan Speaks! Hear O'Brien's Take on NBC Scheduling Snafu

Conan O'BrienWhat, did you expect him to come out guns a-blazin'? That's not Conan O'Brien's style! The always cool funnyman took to his Tonight Show stage Friday, and after avoiding...

Conan O'Brien devoted most of his monologue last night to The Troubles going on with NBC's late night programming, saying "I've been advised that until this whole thing is sorted out, NBC lawyers have asked me to refer to this program as The Sometime At Night Show with Some White Guy." Conan then addressed the rumors flying around about his and Leno's shows, including one that involves the two of them "joining the cast of Jersey Shore as a new character called 'The Awkward Situation.'" (It's kind of weird how the people involved in this keep mentioning that show!)

Just days after confiding to the Post that he watches TV, cries, and thinks about how he "dropped the ball as a man" since his arrest in October for attempted assault on his wife Marilyn, NY1 political reporter Dominic Carter is allegedly being investigated for yet another incident, according to the Post:

"A source said yesterday that Ramapo Town Police had been told Carter -- due to be sentenced Thursday for punching, choking and kicking his wife, Marilyn, in October 2008 -- again assaulted her in their Rockland County home."

Both Carter and his wife deny the allegations of another investigation, but Ramapo Town Police confirmed to the Post that they were "probing a new matter" and that a report was filed but will not be released for several days. Carter is currently on an indefinite leave of absence from NY1.

Rutgers Student Arrested for Newark Security Breach; Was 'Very Excited to Have a Real Woman'

Haisong Jiang, a young man in love.

After a week long manhunt for the fellow in the light-colored coat who hopped the security line at Newark Airport to kiss his girlfriend goodbye one last time, causing mayhem, evacuation, and massive delays, police believe they've found their man. Haisong Jiang, a 28-year-old Rutgers bio-medical research grad student originally from China, was arrested at 7:30 pm last night at his home in Piscataway, NJ, after police compared security footage of license plates to passenger lists and hunted him down. The New York Post talked to Jiang's roommate, whose explanation of Jiang's motives meshes nicely with our theory that the Newark gate crasher just thought he was in a romantic comedy:

"We know that he's very excited to have a real woman," Hui said. "His girlfriend is very upset. I think she will be here in two days to face this with him."

Jiang was released to his own recognizance around midnight last night and charged with defiant trespass, a “petty disorderly persons offense” that carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail. Sen. Frank L. Lautenberg of New Jersey told the AP that the charge was "a slap on the wrist," though some could argue that the most fault lies with the TSA agent who left his post. Jiang received a summons to appear in Newark Municipal Court next week, hopefully with his girlfriend in tow, where he will hopefully tell the Judge: "Your honor, if I am guilty of anything, it's of being a slave to love."

The late-shifting at NBC may send Jay Leno back to 11:35 and push Conan to midnight (or another network) but at least Jimmy Fallon isn't pissed about doing his show a half hour later. "I'll do my show at 3 in the morning," Fallon told New York Times reporter Bill Carter during a talk at the Times' Arts & Leisure Weekend last night. "I'm just happy I have a job." Fallon pointed out that his younger, DVR-loving audience doesn't watch him play beer pong with Betty White in real time anyway. "Time doesn't really matter to me," he said. "We're in a different age. Time is like... I don't even know what time 'Jersey Shore' is on. It doesn't matter - I'll see it." Unlike the rest of America, Fallon claimed he was actually rooting for the The Jay Leno Show.

"I wanted it to work. Obviously there are problems... too many talk shows? There might be too many." Fallon said he doesn't know any more than we do about what's going to happen to NBC's lineup - but he did get a phone call from Leno yesterday/Friday. "Jay said, 'Hey, just checking in.' He's always been great to me and he's a classy guy." Conan, on the other hand, has not called - and Fallon understands. "It's just a lot going on with the whole half hour thing and a lot of it is just messy stuff I'm so happy I'm not involved with."
