AA Khan talks about confiscating piracy DVD's of 3 Idiots

AA Khan Last weekend, SS Branch and Bandra Police along with AA Khan & Associates conducted a raid near Bandra station and seized over 2500 DVDs & CDs. The raid uncovered 69 DVDs of 3 Idiots, 500 DVDs of Avatar and 366 DVDs of Paa. The raids were a joint operation by police department and AA Khan & Associates. PI Tangad Palli from SS Branch, PI A V Chaudhri from Bandra Police station and 3 member team from AA Khan & Associates, headed by Mr. Dhanavade (Former Sr. Inspector) Field officer Habib Rehman Khan and Joseph were together in this operation. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Mr. AA Khan spills the beans on how this raid was made possible and an action against piracy which is the need of the hour. Congratulations for the great job done in getting hold of pirated DVDs. How exactly did you get a hint around this entire racket? Honestly this is a collective effort and the industry needs to come out and fight as a unit. We are doing our bit and need all the support we can get to eradicate this menace. We are hopeful that in the New Year we can sit across the table and think of ways to fight against the racket. To answer your second question we have a strong network of informers across the country. Whenever there are any movements regarding such activities we get tip-off by them and accordingly we execute our plans. At the same time I would like to add that the local police have been quite helpful and it would not have been possible without their continuous support. When you conduct a raid like this, what are the kinds of challenges that you face from the offenders as well as the bureaucratic that we unfortunately have? We execute everything keeping the system in mind. We have the support of the local police so there is no question of going against the system. Like I said without their support it would not have been possible to achieve what we have in the last couple of months. There were about 2500 DVDs seized. Don't you think that's a tip of the iceberg considering the fact that piracy is quite prominent all over? Piracy is prominent not only in India but all over the world. The findings of a study conducted by the US agency RAND brings out that the entire money generated through circulating pirated DVDs and CDs funds terrorism. In the month of December alone we have seized more than 25,000 pirated CDs and DVDs. So you can imagine the amount of CDs circulating throughout the year. This unfortunately amounts to a huge loss not only to the local film industry but also globally. Piracy also has a direct impact on employment. The employment loss due to piracy comprises of direct loss due to decrease in volumes of sales and loss of employment due to impact on production itself i.e. fewer records, movies, games etc. being produced. The total estimated loss of employment to the M&E industry due to piracy in 2007 - 08 is estimated to be 819,712. A raid like this is appreciable but honestly, such raids have been conducted in the past as well where a handful of DVDs are seized on one fine day. Still, in hundreds of nooks and corner in the country, pirated DVDs are being sold in open. How do you plan to curb that? Piracy always existed in some form or the other. But we are getting the facts and figures only now as there are industry body who are working together to bring this menace in the forefront. To curb piracy in the long run we will have to constantly work towards means and ways to fight it. The film industry needs to unite on a common platform to resolve this issue. Along with action from government agencies, the industry also needs to educate the common man about the impact of piracy on the world and how it is being used to fund terrorism. A proactive approach is needed to tackle piracy. The Government needs to realise that without their say we cannot eradicate piracy permanently. The US Govt. is taking keen interest and has recently allocated funds to fight piracy. Our local industry is also meeting up with the concerned ministry to get a similar support. So we can only hope for the best.

Katrina Kaif is the most searched Celebrity of 2009 on Bollywood Hungama

Katrina Kaif has done it again. Second year in a row, the femme fatale has topped the list of the most searched celebrities on Bollywood Hungama, overtaking Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and even Salman Khan! As far as films go, underwater adventure Blue, with Katrina in a cameo, topped over Ghajini, Wanted and Kaminey. When told about the results, an excited Katrina Kaif told Bollywood Hungama, "I'm so happy and privileged and I'm glad my well wishers have supported and stood by me. I m very happy to be voted everywhere. Its only because of my well wishers, I am here today. I hope you guys continue giving me such positive support as always." To feel the pulse of the die-hard film buff, we looked at what users searched on Bollywood Hungama in the whole of 2009, and came up with a bundle of surprises. Katrina over Kareena Kapoor and Blue over Ghajini. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, despite the highly successful Paa and Big Boss 3, could not find a spot on the top searched celebrities. The year 2009 was a battle of the sexes; a head-to-head skirmish between the old and the new Bollywood. In celebrities, the females had a clear lead. Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra were the most searched celebs on Bollywood Hungama, followed by Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor. The top searched movies were Blue, Ghajini, Wanted and Veer respectively. Blue garnered the maximum number of searches, a testimony to the expectations it had built up. SRK's My Name Is Khan generated enough curiosity to make it to the eighth spot. New age Bollywood cinema made its mark with Kaminey, Love Aaj Kal, Dostana and New York also making it to the top 10 searches of 2009. A few stars had a bad hair day last year. 'Khiladi' Akshay Kumar was the eighth most searched celeb on Bollywood Hungama, followed only by newcomers Asin and chocolate hero Imran Khan. Clearly, gorgeous girls and the tried-and-tested brand of mass entertainers found favour with our audience. We know that the real film buffs will have their own conclusions to make. So, here's the list of the top 10 most searched celebs and movies. Let us know what you think! Top searched celebs No. Artist   1   Katrina Kaif   2   Kareena Kapoor   3   Priyanka Chopra   4   Salman Khan   5   Shah Rukh Khan   6   Shahid Kapoor   7   Amrita Rao   8   Akshay Kumar   9   Asin   10   Imran Khan Top searched movies No. Movies   1   Blue   2   Ghajini   3   Wanted   4   Veer   5   Love Aaj Kal   6   Kaminey   7   Luck   8   My Name Is Khan   9   Dostana   10   New York

Bipasha Basu celebrates birthday with family, John missing from celebrations

Delhi girl Bipasha Basu returned to her roots to bring in her birthday on January 7. "This was my first birthday in Delhi. I've very special links with that city. I was born in Delhi. So when I got a chance to be in the Capital for my birthday I grabbed it. To make it even better it was seriously cold in Delhi. I love the winter weather." Bipasha's soul-mate and hopefully her lifelong companion John Abraham accompanied her to Delhi. "It was the Auto Expo and as you know John loves anything on wheels, but hates birthdays. So he was just happy being around some of the best cars in the world." The couple flew back to Mumbai in time for Bipasha's family birthday lunch. "It's an annual ritual on my birthday, and one I won't miss for the world. This time one of my sisters was not here for my birthday. She's studying. We really missed her. But my parents and my other sister, brother-in-law and nephew were home for my birthday." John was not invited to the family lunch. As far as birthdays go there's a serious problem between Bipasha and John. While John hates birthdays and all the accompanying rituals, Bipasha loves every bit of the attention of her birthday. Hence, while John went into hiding on his birthday last month (December 17), Bipasha basked in all the attention. "John runs the other way when it comes to cutting cakes. I spent my whole birthday cutting cakes with different groups of family members and friends. I couldn't take all the calls and SMSes. But I answered all of them on the day after my birthday. When I returned from Delhi my house was filled with flowers. You've no idea how wonderful flowers look in a newly-renovated house. My home was fragrant and attractive. My two sweet maidservants had arranged all the bouquets all over the house." Bipasha is hoping for a productive year. "There isn't much work happening. The scripts floating around are mostly mediocre. I can't bring myself to do sub-standard work. Hopefully I'll sign something exciting soon. But I'm certainly not sitting at home. I'm constantly on my toes doing one thing or another, too busy to twiddle my thumbs."

Subhash K Jha speaks about Dulha Mil Gaya

Dulha Mil Gaya There is only one reason why this hideous satire gone awry can be tolerated for a bit. Sushmita Sen playing the broadly satirical hugely self-important chic but self deluding shimmer just...simmers on screen! Dazzling in spite of her fluctuating weight, in-sync with her character in spite of a script that doesn't seem to know its mind, and utterly oblivious of the bustling mess that first-time director Mudassar Aziz has created, Sushmita just has so much fun with her character. Sadly no component in the plot supports Sushmita's unique ability to create a woman who is simultaneously sexy and cerebral. How the hell did Mudassar Aziz think he could pass off this exotic but idiotic echo of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1969's Pyar Ka Sapna as a contemporary take on commitment-phobia in times of serious pubbing? There are some interesting sporadically-touching moments in the mish-mash of chaotic comic timing and misguided social message. Watch Sushmita in that moment when all her cynicism about the validity of the sweet innocent village girl from Amritsar dissolves in fleeting close-up. That moment is worth more than the entire film. Dulha Mil Gaya seems to endorse garishness in place of glamour, hedonism rather than a high-life and a ceaseless stream of awkwardly-written jumble of scenes that would probably be rejected in a halfway decent American sitcom on the haughty heiress and the incorrigible playboy. Ms Sen is every inch the haughty heiress. But how much of the rest of the cast ranging from the teakwood Fardeen Khan to the over-the-top Howard Rosamayer (playing the whiny effeminate 'man' Friday) can she control? One expects the screen to light up when 'guest' star Shah Rukh Khan turns up in the second-half. Tragically the anarchic humour of the second-half dips to all all-time low, leading to a manufactured, fractured climax that even the most diehard romantic would find hard to stay awake for. Dulha Mil Gaya Yes, the first-half has its interesting interludes. Shimmer's first encounter on flight with Samarpreet (Ishita Sharma) the poor lost bride looking for her playboy husband in Trinidad, crackles because of Ms Sen's patronizing preening. No one can do the la-di-dah benign bitch's act better. The way Shimmer takes the bereft Samarpreet under her wings, could have been done with more restrain and panache. The gaudy interiors (what was the art director Leela Chanda thinking?) just don't match with the natural scenic splendour of the Trinidadian outdoors. Artificiality is the middle-name for this wacky wedding on speed. Most of the time we get the feeling that the crew of this film went to Trinidad to party with noisy music for company. Someone forgot to carry the script for this corny Caribbean cruise. Debutant director Mudassar Aziz seems to have shot the excruciatingly screechy film remembering the scenes by heart, though we don't much heart in any of this auto-pilot parody. Largely unbearable even for the diehard Sushmita Sen fans.

DQ Entertainment to animated short films inspired by Charlie Chaplin

DQE, the Animation, Gaming, Live action production and global distribution has announced the development of a series of animated short films for television in collaboration with French production companies Method Animation and MK2. DQE, Method Animation and MK2 announced the production and worldwide distribution and exploitation of an animated version of 104 six-minute episodes inspired by the legendary film icon Charlie Chaplin's Hollywood films. DQE and Method Animation are committed to preserving the sense of humour and the emotional values present in all of Charlie Chaplin's 70 films, all the while bringing out the quirky, burlesque and comic tone of the character he created. With a global production budget of approximately Euro 8 million, the first series will be developed in colour creating a timeless atmosphere and a unique look, blending early 20th century with present time, allowing for younger generations to identify with the Charlie Chaplin character. In keeping with the spirit of Chaplin, the short episodes will be presented without dialogue, giving enough space for the full scope of the famous character's talents in pantomime. Completing the picture, putting particular emphasis on the choice of music and the sound design, will add to the laughter and emotion of the adventures of the legendary tramp. Tapaas Chakravarti, Chairman & CEO of DQ Entertainment (International) Limited and DQ Entertainment Plc said, "This is history in the making as the partnership with MK2 and our own long term co-production partners Method Animation, Paris, will bring the legendary entertainer Charlie Chaplin back to life in a fantastic 'Animated Avatar'. The 3 companies will keep the legend of Charlie Chaplin alive and these large number of short films in hi-end 3D Animation will delight the 21st century kids and the families again as they will witness the legendary entertainer in his new Avatar."

Akshay Kumar sashays with bevy of beauties in L'Officiel

Many attempted it, only a few succeeded, while many others are still trying, hoping against hope that they will succeed someday or the other. We are talking about 'The Unravelling of Akshay Kumar', which, incidentally, also happens to be the subject of this issue of L'Officiel! For those who wanted to know the 'real' Akki as compared to the 'reel' one, this issue definitely serves as one helluva' of a Bible! Well, Akki, in this free wheeling interview, speaks about the five things that he just cannot live without. Instead of playing a spoilsport, we shall be generous enough to mention three of them, which include Akki's mother, his son Aarav, wife Twinkle Khanna... and the rest of the two can be read in this glorious issue. Akshay, also talks about his idea of celebration, his take on fatherhood, his New Year resolutions, his attempts to save the planet, his take on those who rejected him during his struggling days etc... All in all, as we said, this issue is a must-must buy this season and you know the reason...Akshay Kumar!

Sanjay Gupta-Suparn Verma join hands for 'Avatar' inspired 3D horror flick

Sanjay Gupta Avatar has done the trick. Not just has it created havoc at the global box office, it has also made many a filmmakers smell the coffee. The action adventure saga has registered its place in history as one of those films that has changed the very dimension of filmmaking. No wonder, Bollywood has also felt the impact, so much so that producer Sanjay Gupta has taken an early lead and announced his next film with director Suparn Gupta. Belonging to horror genre, this yet untitled 'live' film would be made in 3D format. This is not all as the duo wants to use the same technology with which James Cameron created Avatar and found worldwide recognition coming his way. Says Sanjay Gupta, "James Cameron has shown the world that what was being created till date is now so passé. It's time to move on, to explore newer opportunities, to touch new horizons. One has to move out of the comfort zone and one has to do it fast. This idea was brewing in Suparn's mind for quite some time and I was pretty much on board to produce the film for him." Traditionally, horror hasn't really made inroads in Hindi cinema in the way quintessential romantic film or an action drama has. Moreover, Sanjay Gupta has been known for making slick action flicks for last decade and a half. In such times, a step into horror genre and that too in 3D technology does sound a little too ambitious. "Today with the kind of all around acceptance that Avatar is getting all over, I am convinced that audiences are pretty much ready for the 3D experience", says Gupta in a confident tone, "However, we also need to pull up our socks when it comes to the technology that we use for capturing the frames. It has to be cutting edge and futuristic. Avatar has shown us that way and we have all the right intentions on bringing in that technology to Bollywood for the first time ever." Suparn Verma For writer-director Suparn too, the film comes like a shot in the arm. His last release Acid Factory, which was made in collaboration with Mumbai Mantra, had turned out to be a mammoth disappointment at the box office in spite of quite a few decent reviews coming it's way. Just when one had thought that after his debut effort Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena and now Acid Factory, his direction career had come to naught, an offer like this extended by Sanjay Gupta must have been heartfelt. Apparently, this is not the first time that Suparn is dabbling with a horror subject. As a writer of diverse films like Zameen, Chhal, Janasheen, Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai? and Karam, he has dabbled with quite a few subjects. However, horror is something that was always his first love. In fact the very first script that he wrote belonged to horror genre and it was just incidental that he didn't film one. However, with the first decade of the new millennium coming to a close, he truly believes that horror is certainly in. "The script on which I am currently working is entirely different from the one I had written close to a decade back. However, that 'keeda' of making a horror flick remained. One man who has made a difference to my career as a writer is Stephen King. Look at the volume of work he boasts of. He has written a phenomenal 100 odd films and across genres. Can you beat that? It is people like King who make you feel so small in comparison. We lesser mortals are just starting off", says Suparn in awe. The film is expected to roll after April 2010 and the cast along with the title would be announced in due course of time. For Suparn, the film is a huge responsibility since he has to get it just right in his third film. Any lessons learnt from his first two efforts? "Yes, quite a few lessons have been learnt but one thing is for sure that there won't be any collaboration with Mumbai Mantra", he laughs away.

"The gesture of sucking Arshad's thumb was so raunchy" - Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan Vidya Balan who never touches alcohol shot for special risqué number entitled 'Ibn Batuta' in Ishqiya with her co-stars Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. Says Vidya, "We shot the song last month after the entire shooting was completed. I don't drink and I had to act sozzled along with Naseer saab and Arshad." The track will be used in the opening and credit titles of Ishqiya. Says Vidya, "Arshad is a fab dancer. And Naseer saab was having a ball dancing to the song Vishal Bhardwaj had composed. I think the last time he danced was for 'Oye Oye' in Tridev. But you can't tell. He's so good. Both the guys were having so much fun, and I had to join in pretending to be totally drunk." The song came out so well that the director Abhishek Chaubhey was thinking of using it in the narrative. But since it didn't fit in, 'Ibn Batuta' will now just be part of the credit titles. That isn't the only daredevil thing Vidya has done in Ishqiya. This has to qualify as one of the most sensuous things a mainstream Hindi-film heroine is seen doing in any movie. In what Vidya Balan describes as the most blatant come-hither gesture she has ever seen any actress in Hindi cinema make, in Ishqiya she was required to take Arshad Warsi's thumb in her mouth and suck on it suggestively. Each time she did so in the rehearsals, Vidya would burst into uncontrollable giggles. And Arshad would join in. Recalls Vidya, "Fortunately, Arshad is a friend. We've gotten along well from the time we did Lage Raho Munnabhai together. I don't know if I'd have been able to do a scene like putting my co-star's finger in the mouth if it was some other actor. That gesture of sucking Arshad's thumb was so raunchy and sexy, and that's so not me, I couldn't connect with it all." That sense of non-connectivity, says Vidya, runs through her character in Ishqiya. "I play this rustic voluptuous woman. All my weight-loss happened after I did this film. I had to look filled up for this part. In Ishqiya, everything from the way I wore my saree to the way I looked at men, was alien to me. The role exposed me to a new way of interpreting a liberated woman. My character in Ishqiya may not know about feminism. But she's truly liberated." Vidya is now looking forward to the release of Ishqiya in January. "The director Abhishek Chaubhey had to constantly keep giving me a pep talk. Quite often I was stuck because of the language and content."
