Subhash K Jha speaks about Raat Gayi Baat Gayi

Raat Gayi Baat Gayi Somewhere on the second-half of this slightly seductive jigsaw about a one-night scam, filmmaker Sudhir Mishra shows up as Neha Dhupia's father who drops in to have a chat with his sullen sultry daughter on the way to the airport. Little does the stoic Mishra know beti-babe has two men stashed away in a cupboard in the living room that looks consciously like a prop on a stage-set. Quirky sex comedies are allowed their moments of eccentricity. Last time we saw a benevolent patriarch stop over in transit was Sanjay Dutt in Rohit Shetty's comedy All The Best. Maybe at this point Shukla deliberately wanted to introduce an element of staged comedy. After all, isn't the world a stage? Shakespeare got there first. But hell. Saurabh Shukla is panting from behind to catch Sheakespeare's comedy of 'errors' in a modern context. Saurabh Shukla (who can be quite a funny-guy on demand) has made a quirky sometimes-crisp sometimes-placid look-see at marriage and infidelity. The seductively - paced work is set at a party hosted by a loud Punjabi clueless woman (played with much gusto by Navneet Nishan) whose amiable husband Dalip Tahil we soon come to know, is cheating on his plump wife with the svelte seductress on the block played by Neha Dhupia who seems to invite more male attention than is healthy for any girl with a respectable appetite. And we aren't talking about her tummy. Tahil isn't alone. Vinay Pathak (playing the goofy slightly stupid and undiplomatic regular guy once again) is cheating on his wife Anuradha Menon (the hilarious Veejay Lola trying hard not to be funny, and succeeding) by checking out porn on the internet. "At your age?" tut-tuts Tahil before himself being caught with his pants down. Though nothing much up at his age. But our main potential philanderer is Rahul( Rajat Kapoor, as suave in his sleaziness as ever), married to the sullen Irawati Harshe who befriends the all-round resident siren (Dhupia) at a party , gets drunk and then forgets whether he actually did anything naughty or not. Hangover, anyone? Raat Gayi Baat Gayi "I can do it even when I'm drunk, no problem there," Rahul (Rajat Kapoor) says vainly to his porn-fed pal. One of the problems here is that everyone speaks in Hindi because…well, they're part of a Hindi film when they're characters who would be comfortable in English. Having said this and that, the characters seem to be effortlessly conscious of their authentic bearings. None of the performers strays from the not-so-straight and borrowed path of betrayal, deception and infidelity. The Rahul-Mitali marriage has a twist in its tail at the end. It doesn't shock you. It just makes you sigh. Saurabh Shukla's direction embarks on a journey through one night of steamy sensations. The revelations are hardly shocking, just diverting. Stylishly cut (Sankalp Meshram's editing is amazing in its austerity) the material's chic movement doesn't quite justify the content. But the narrative has moments that spill out the acerbity underlining urban marriages which are at best functional and at their worst, lies told to keep up an appearance of domestic smoothness. The film exudes the scent of intelligence and competence. The actors all know their jobs. Most of them have earlier been through this kind of sexual-moral dilemma in some form or the other. The cutting edge is missing. But the proceedings never get cumbersome.

Wishing Vidya Balan a very happy Birthday

Vidya Balan She is the epitome of 'V'ulnerability, 'I'ndian-ness, 'D'earness, 'Y'outh, and 'A'ttitude. For those in the know, will surely know whom we are referring to. But for the uninitiated, she is the one and only Vidya Balan, who celebrates her birthday today. Not many know that this Gen-Next's Dream Girl started her affair with the camera with the Malyalam movie 'Chakram', a film in which she was paired opposite the southern superstar Mohanlal. And as far as the ad world is concerned, it was the Surf Excel commercial that paved the way for the 'Excel-lent' actress into the silver screen. And the resultant of this was the Pradeep Sarkar directed Parineeta, a film that gave Bollywood its very own Superstar in Vidya Balan. Vidya repeated the success of Parineeta with films like Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Guru, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Heyy Babyy and the more recent smash hit Paa. Vidya has everything that is required of a Diva. In other words, it becomes totally needless, to say that Vidya is definitely a Diva in the making. Friends, please join Bollywood Hungama as we wish this Diva named Vidya Balan, a very happy Birthday, by posting your wishes below:

Faces 2009 - A look at B-towners who rocked this year

Amitabh Bachchan It was a relatively quiet year for some of the icons of showbiz. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek spent the year shooting Mani Ratnam's Raavan in the wilderness. John, Bipasha, Preity and Shah Rukh also had a quiet year. Saif Ali Khan made waves with Love Aaj Kal and then vanished during the second part of year. So who were the most visible faces of the year? Big B: He took a large chunk of the year off to be with his friend Amar Singh, faced a thundering failure in Aladin. But Amitabh Bachchan bounced back at year-end as the 12-going-on-80 prematurely aged child-man Auro in Paa. Then there was his return to television with Bigg Boss. Once again at year-end the question is not, how long will Mr. Bachchan continue to surprise us, but what will he do next? Buzz is, AB Corp Ltd, back in booming business with Paa will be producing a film that will star all the four star-Bachchans together for the first time. In the meanwhile, Paa director Balki took off for the mountains for a 10-day retreat to write yet another startling role for Mr B. After courting Tabu and Progeria in Cheeni Kum and Paa respectively, what next? Balki knows best. Ranbir Kapoor Ranbir Kapoor: So okay at year-end Ranbir's most precious film and the performance he was proudest of in Rocket Singh- Salesman Of The Year failed to take off. Rocket aborted but the guy proved unstoppable with two back-to-back hits, both with weird kinky titles - Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, both featuring Ranbir in author-backed roles. The quota of conviction and credibility combined with a star presence that we thought went out of vogue with Rishi Kapoor, makes Ranbir the most dependable star-actor of our times. He won't bend to break the rules. He will just do what he wants, regardless of repercussions. All through the year he remained in the news for his breakups, linkups, and what-not though he swears he has no interest in being newsworthy. Neither did Tiger Woods. katrina Kaif Katrina Kaif: Ek Katrina thi, lakhon deewane the...could be the song this wholesome lissome winsome win-all lass could sing to her grandchildren. With 3 blockbusters New York, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and De Dana Dan to her credit Katrina left the female competitors far behind. At year-end she suffered a bout of ill health but was on her feet soon enough. You can't keep a lucky-charm down. Pritam Chakraborty: Every year it's the same story. The hot-hit machine. Practically every chartbuster of 2009 was Pritam's. No wonder he can't stop grinning from year to year. Pritam scored bull's eye with songs in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Tum Mile, De Dana Dan , New York. The birth of a baby girl ensured that the goofy smile never left Pritam's face. Akshay Kumar Akshay Kumar: He ran into some choppy weather during the earlier part of 2009 when three of his purported blockbusters Chandni Chowk To China, Tasveer 8 X 10 and Kambakkht Ishq under-performed. But the second-half of the year with De Dana Dan and the singular honour of carrying the Olympian torch proved to be the high points of Akshay's year. He's all set for a year of big events ahead. AR Rahman: He went off to get the Oscar for us. Came back to a cluster of pending assignments and then is now off to get the Grammy for his Slumdog Millionaire. Not since Pandit Ravi Shankar has an Indian musician made such a grand impact globally. It would be no exaggeration to say that when it comes to our music, Rahman is the global 'band' ambassador. Salman Khan Salman Khan: With Wanted, Salman proved that the old-fashioned larger-than-life hero still ruled the roost. Salman's spate of non-starters at the boxoffice were quickly forgotten as he single-handedly revived the sagging fortunes of Boney Kapoor's production house. The film had no star value except Salman. As though to prove he sells solo, Salman's home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna with the hot-and-happening Kareena Kapoor tanked during Diwali. Vishal Bhardwaj: While he lit up the pubs with Dhan Te Nan, his latest stab at direction Kaminey got the nation's critics swooning in ecstasy. Yup, Vishal Bhardwaj clicked in both capacities as a music composer and a filmmaker. On the home front, Vishal's wife Rekha made headway as a playback singer of substance. This Bhardwaj sure has come a long way.

"Aamir Is God" - Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor has a lot to celebrate. Her film 3 Idiots is a runaway hit. And Kareena decided to run away to Delhi to be with her sister Karisma for New Years. Sounding more relaxed than she did recently, Kareena took time off from the very special family gathering to speak. "I've been running around frantically promoting my film. And then I was ailing for a week. I decided I had to be well for the festive season. Christmas was a very very special occasion for my mom and sister. But we never get to be together for the occasion. This time I was adamant. I made sure I took time off from work so all us girls could spend time together. My mom and I were here in Delhi to spend time with my sister and niece." Laughs Kareena, "Karisma and I don't get to spend that much time together. She has her home and husband in Delhi. My career takes me all over the place. Mom cribs we're never together. This year-end reunion was something we had promised ourselves from long before." In Delhi, Kareena is over-whelmed by the response to her new film. "Everywhere I go I am swamped by compliments for the role. The length of the role didn't matter. I'm just glad to be part of a historic happening. When Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir asked me to be part of their film I jumped at it. I knew the film would be special because of Raju and Aamir, and I was right. As far as our cinema is concerned, Aamir is God." Reacting to the opinion that Kareena hardly has anything to do in her new film Kareena says, "Who says I've nothing to do? I'm very part of the main drama .Would the story forward if you remove my character? " Kareena is specially pleased by the compliments she has received for her pairing with Aamir. "Everyone thinks we look good together. I think Aamir and I make a fantastic pair. I'd love to do another film with him immediately, this time I don't want share him with other pivotal characters." In fact talks are on with two leading filmmakers including Mani Ratnam who is apparently all set to revive his Aamir-Kareena project Lajjo. A R Rahman and Gulzar have even recorded the songs. Looking back on the year Kareena feels happy about the response to her performances in Kurbaan and 3 Idiots. "Both films are very precious to me. Kurbaan was intense, 3 Idiots was more fun. In 2010 I did films with all the Khans.... Salman, Aamir, Shah Rukh (I had a song with him in Billu) and of course Saif."

Bollywood folks pick the worst film of 2009

Yesterday, we went across the B-town and found that 3 Idiots was the unanimous choice when it came to the best that 2009 had to offer. The closest contender was Paa while Avatar led from the front when it came to Hollywood flicks. However, it was quite a divided opinion when it came to the worst of 2009. Quite a few names popped up, some big (Delhi 6, Chandni Chowk To China), some small (Dil Bole Hadippa), some relatively unknown (Videsh - Heaven on Earth, Victory) and a few completely irrelevant (Deshdrohi). There was also an emotional angle involved with a filmmaker or two criticizing their own effort (Sikandar). Read on: Ramesh Taurani - Victory, which came at the beginning of the year, stays on to be the worst film of 2009 for me. Shirish Kunder Shirish Kunder - (Smiles) Yes, there is one movie which is really the worst for me. Still, I can't name it since it's been made by people known to me! Kalki - Worst of the year was Billu (Barber) because it was just a series of music videos and nothing else. Sajid Khan Sajid Khan - Worst movie of the year was Delhi 6. Really, I had a lot of expectations from the film but it turned out to be such a disappointing fare. Hasnain Hyderabadwaala - The worst film of 2009 is Dil Bole Hadippa. Really, what were the makers thinking? Audiences were taken for granted that the protagonist out there won't be able to differentiate between a girl and a boy despite a different physicality and voice. Jagmohan Mundhra Jagmohan Mundhra - I have to pick two films here - Chandni Chowk To China and Kambakkht Ishq. Rituparna Sengupta - There is nothing really which is worst for me because every movie has some effort going in there. Ruslaan Mumtaz - Blue is the worst movie of the year Piyush Jha Piyush Jha - Even though I directed it, I believe worst film of the year was Sikandar. That's because no one saw it and the media totally ignored its significance. Perhaps that happened because Sikandar didn't have stars/big backers/comic entertainment. Whatever is the reason, the fact is Sikandar was ignored, and that is the real truth. Sonu Sood Sonu Sood - (Smiles) Even as the entire year is through, I still can't decide on one worst movie. Maybe I have missed it. Suneel Darshan - 2009 started with its worst film Chandni Chowk to China It was a 'directionless' disaster that disrespected the viewer's sensibility. Sadaa - You are asking me about the worst film of the year? You know what; there have been so many that I don't even care to remember. Boney Kapoor Boney Kapoor - Preity Zinta's Videsh - Heaven on Earth was the worst that 2009 had to offer. Robby Grewal - Worst of the lot would be Deshdrohi (the film had a staggered release across 2008 and 2009) Ananth Mahadevan - If I pick one WORST FILM of the year, I might just stir up a hornet's nest. For, another one might cry out that it was more deserving. So let sleeping dogs lie! Aanand L Rai - For me, the worst movie in 2009 was Delhi 6. It was a very fine concept and from a rock solid director. Still, it failed. Hansika Motwani Hansika Motwani - I don't really wish to pick and choose the worst film of the year because for me every movie is good. I know what are the kind of difficulties that we actors go through so it would be wrong on my part to say that this or that movie was bad! Tusshar Kapoor - Worst of 2009 would be all those films that were released during the strike. Ha ha ha! Kunal Deshmukh Kunal Deshmukh - Chandni Chowk To China was the worst film of the year. What a waste of effort. They could have done so much with the film but that was not the case to be. Raksha Mistry - Isn't it ironical that the first film which I saw in 2009 stays on to be worst for me? I am talking about Chandni Chowk To China. Maybe I was expecting a lot from the film's association with Warner Bros. But then it neither had any locations of China nor Chandni Chowk. Worse, it had no story!

Aal Izz Not Well between Chetan Bhagat and the makers of 3 Idiots

Chetan Bhagat 3 Idiots may be breaking Box Office records by the day but that hasn't kept the film and its makers far away from a controversy. Few days after the release of one of the best films of 2009, popular author Chetan Bhagat (on whose best selling novel '5 Point Someone' the film is based) and Vidhu Vinod Chopra have engaged in a war of words. Chetan is apparently upset at the way the makers of 3 Idiots have been trying to keep him and his book out of the limelight. Anyone who has read '5 Point Someone' and watched 3 Idiots will surely be able to identify the many direct similarities between the two. Yet the makers have been going around the town saying that the film is completely different from the book. In fact, early this week at a press conference in Bangalore, Vidhu Vinod Chopra accused Chetan of seeking unnecessary publicity and needless to say the best selling writer has not taken this remark too lightly. Chetan has come out in the open and spoken about this issue in his official blog and here are the excerpts of the same: "The 3 Idiots story credit issue has been making some noise now. The news is coming out in bits and pieces, and I think it is important I clarify a few things. Yes, clearly, the makers of the film have been unfair and thousands of my readers have been saying so. I am aware of this, and this is not an issue that has 'just come up'. I've been grappling with it for two years, but kept silent about it. The only reason it has surfaced after the movie's release is because Five Point Someone has a few million readers, and when you copy a popular story claiming it as 'original' and 'completely different', people are going to find out. People did, and so did a lot of media journalists. Pre-release, the makers made press statements like the movie is only 'very loosely', '2%-5% inspired by the book'. After release, those who have read the book and seen the movie (and frankly, I think those are the only people who have the right to comment) find the film to be an adaptation of Five Point Someone (FPS). The setting, characters, plotline, dramatic twists and turns, one-liners, theme, message - almost all aspects that make up the story are from FPS. Yes, there are some changes, any adaptation requires that - but it is no way an original story. Leading movie critics have privately admitted to me that the film is 70% the book. Still, don't take my word for it - go read the book, watch the film. Chetan Bhagat I, frankly, was shocked to see this. This is because I was also fed 'this is an original movie' line a lot. I wanted to see the final script - it was never shown to me. I wanted to see the film before release - it was not shown to me (even though trials had been done for people). What's more, the makers had called me to their office and pressured me several times to withdraw my 'Based on a novel by' credit, which was by contract. They told me they'd replace it with something like 'initiated by' - a credit that doesn't exist anywhere in the world. I still told them that if the film is indeed original, I'll happily withdraw the credit, but somehow the promos don't tell me so. I asked them to show me the film and they fell silent. Ten days before the release, I was called into their office. They said 'we should be friends now'. I said I am always up for friendship, and the success of the film is good for me as well. They also said, and I quote verbatim 'even though this is an original film, we have given you a great credit, right upfront. After all, we love writers and a king should treat another king with respect. You are family'. I believed them. Then I went for the premiere. My family sat in the theatre shocked, as sequence after sequence came from the book. 2%-5% means 3-6 minutes, and I had told my family to look for the few FPS moments and note them. However, there were so many that it became impossible to keep track. The plot line was same - people meet at ragging, the first class with definition of machine, the friends separate, Alok (Raju) moves with Venkat (Chatur), Ryan (Rancho) helps Alok's father, Alok rejoins group etc etc. From Alok (Raju) jumping to stealing the papers and calling out from Cherian (Virus') office - the book came alive on screen. I was surprised and happy that FPS has made it in such a grand way. However, my family had not spotted my credit in the beginning (there was none) and they were feeling let down. A screenplay associate credit to VVC had a prominent upfront placement. The story credit was not shared with me. And yes, all the office talk of a 'king treated like king' was a white lie. I knew they had played with me, and that 'based on a novel by' credit, which they were legally bound to give would be hushed away at the end - with the clear intention of making sure people miss it. And indeed, it came after the junior artists and still photographer of the movie, and zoomed away fast. My own mother missed seeing my name, and for that she cried after seeing the film. I told her it doesn't matter, as people know FPS. But yes, that hurt me a lot. I went up to the makers after the premiere, and they said it is a hit so chill and forget about it. I guess I could, but it is hard. Only a writer or a creative person knows how this feels. I am one of the lucky ones that people have read FPS. Imagine the fate of other writers in Bollywood. Anyway, I came home and thanked God for making my story reach so many people. Chetan Bhagat Upon the film's release - my mailbox and twitter account, literally became flooded. Fans and readers wrote stunned mails. They had seen the makers' interviews which had denied FPS links and they missed seeing the credit on screen. I kept quiet, though I did send a message to the makers telling them audience reactions. They did not respond. Soon media journalists saw the film. They called me and said they have to do a story on this as they are on my side. I tried my best to avoid them. However, when one journalist from Delhi called, and asked me how I felt about the credit. I used one word - I said 'strange'. And that's when the news exploded. This, my friends, is the story. Meanwhile, the makers have accused me of seeking fame - when clearly it is the other way round. They've taken my story to make fame for themselves, and shut me out of it. I know my readers will spot it immediately. However, the film also reaches millions of other people who do not read books - and they deserve to know who wrote the story. And that is why I am talking about this issue (and I admit for people who've read the book, they may wonder it's so obvious so why I am going on about it). Some people have told me that I should keep silent. I did try to be silent but didn't work. Also, people say this is how Bollywood works. Sorry, I disagree. Not all Bollywood works like this. There are a lot of good people too. And every event like this helps change things for the better. And that is what I am all about anyway. I urge you to not believe me at face value. Read the book, see the movie - and like the movie says - think for yourself and decide." Whatever be the outcome of this clash, one thing is certain that Aal Izz certainly not Well between Chetan Bhagat and the makers of 3 Idiots.

"What were Jaideep & Shimit thinking while doing Rocket Singh?" - Abbas Tyrewala

Abbas Tyrewala Abbas Tyrewala who directed one of 2008's biggest successes is also a writer of great repute, having written among other things, the prophetic dialogues of Munnabhai MBBS and the screenplay of Maqbool. Abbas went to see the latest Yashraj production Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year not only as a writer and director but also as an eager fan of the films that the banner comes out of. "I love Jaideep Sahni's writing and Shimit Amin's direction. But what were they thinking while doing Rocket Singh? Where is the payoff in the screenplay? Where is the hero? Ranbir plays a timid Sardar who steals phone lines and computer hardware from his work-place to start his own business. And we are supposed to accept him as a man of integrity! Would he be able to start his own business if it wasn't for the nefarious support he gets from his work-place? In other words the 'hero' resorts to those very underhand tactics that he claims to abhor and takes the help of that very organization which has disgraced him!" Most damaging of all, Abbas couldn't see a hero in Ranbir's character. "The boss (Manish Chowdhary) is so over-the-top he belongs to another sensibility altogether, calls Ranbir a 'bastard' several times, humiliates and disgraces him publicly. We wait for our hero to have his revenge on the boorish boss. I completely believe in the old-fashioned Hindi film formula where the hero gives his tormentor tit for tat. But Boss, where's the comeuppance for the villain? In fact the story comes across more as the boss' redemption story as the hero's." Abbas is now more than sure what he wants to do with his own hero John Abraham in 1-800-Love at the end. "I want my hero to either win or die at the end. Not a hero whose fight for the right simply peters out to a dead-end." In fact Abbas's disappointment with Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year has given him a renewed creative strength. "I now know exactly how my hero's journey to end. I'm an old-fashioned storyteller. And we've at heart a very traditional audience. They want to see the hero triumph at the end, not walk away from the villain as he makes an apology speech."
