Champagne Market Still Flat

By Daniel Costello

Our friends at Marketplace did an interesting and timely story this week about how the bubble in the Champagne market has collapsed this year -- prices are down 50 percent to 90 percent.

Sales numbers for the important holiday season won't be out until February but it seems many Americans will be toasting the New Year with a cheaper champagne cousin: sparkling wine, especially the increasingly popular Prosecco.

One interesting tidbit: while there was a global champagne shortage as recently as 2007, so much of the tony bubbly went unsold this year that a large stock had to be sent back to France in recent months.

In late July, Goldman Sachs, one of the firm's largest trading partners, challenged Financial Products' numbers, asserting that Goldman's calculations showed a significant drop in the swaps' value. "They are not budging and are acting irrational," Tom Athan, a Financial Products executive, wrote on Aug. 2 to Forster after a tense conference call with Goldman employees. 10 Financial Resolutions For The New Year

As 2009 winds to a close, time has once again come to make your new year’s resolutions. If personal finance is important to you, you undoubtedly wish to set financial goals for yourself in 2010. Even the most money-conscious among us can certainly improve their finances in a variety of aspects, and with the fresh mindset that the new year brings, there is no better time to begin closely examining this area of your life and resolving to make some changes for the better. Below are ten resolutions to consider as we enter a new year.

Build On The Goals You Met Last Year

Image 1

A new year is a great opportunity to set new, ambitious financial goals. If you met specific goals in 2009 you should be very proud, but you should not take that as an excuse to slow down or stay at the status quo. Rather, build upon these goals and continue to improve. If you’re saving for a new home by allocating a specific amount of money per month to a down payment, up that amount by 3% or so. If your goal was to cut unnecessary spending and funnel the savings into an investment account, try to expand this policy to other areas of your life.

Beef Up Your Retirement Plan

Image 2

Saving for your retirement is one of those financial goals people tend to put off, figuring that they have plenty of time to consider it later in life. Often, this mindset can be dangerous, as retirement time comes quicker than most people anticipate, and by that time it’s too late to begin saving. Safeguard against this danger by increasing your retirement savings significantly this year. This need not be an arduous or complex task. One proven way of beefing up your retirement account is to increase your 401k contributions by 2-3%. This might not seem like a whole lot, but over time those extra contributions add up to a lot, and you will probably not miss such a small amount of money if you make the appropriate allocations. If you’re lucky enough to work for a company who matches your contributions, that 2-3% becomes a growth of 4-6%. Such discipline can truly set you up for a better future down the road.

Create an Emergency Savings Account

Image 3

You don’t need an article to tell you that financial crises strike at unexpected moments. Unfortunately, most people don’t plan for such emergencies, and are thus caught with their pants down when disaster hits. Often, the money needed to cover these situations comes out of other financial accounts, such as savings or investments, which ends up setting you back significantly in your financial goals. This year, pledge to be prepared. Create a separate account dedicated to surprise expenses (such as a huge car repair or a busted water heater) and begin squirreling away money into it. Resolve not to touch this money unless it is absolutely needed. The next time your washer or stove breaks, you’ll be proud that you don’t have to dip into the “new car” account to pay for it.

Cut Down Your Debt

Image 4

Getting out from under debt is one of those very unsexy things in life that never seems very rewarding in practice. No one wants to send hundreds of dollars a month to a credit company in exchange for a number on a piece of paper getting smaller. When deciding to make significantly more than a minimum payment, almost any other fun purchase looks more rewarding in the moment. However, eliminating your debt will open many future doors for you financially. Without that pesky credit card bill due each month, you can use that money for things you really want, such as retirement savings or home improvements. This year, make a resolution to pay two or three times the minimum monthly payment on all your debt. This will enable you to eliminate whatever debt you have twice or three times as fast. When you no longer see bills coming to the house, you’ll be glad you had the discipline to pay it all off.

Look For Used Products When Purchasing Expensive Items

With so many options to buy quality used electronics these days, it only makes financial sense to explore these options when buying big ticket items. If saving money is important to you in the new year, check out websites like CraigsList and Ebay before dropping thousands of dollars on a brand new flat screen or surround sound system for the house. Often, you’ll find the same products you were going to buy new for huge discounts, only because they have been used a few times by their current owners. Many times these items are indistinguishable from new ones, and the money you save will go to much better use.

Stay On Top of Your Credit Score

Your credit score is an important thing for you to know. Having good or bad credit can greatly influence the financial decisions you ought to make. For example, if you have any negatives on your credit report, you should work to clear those up, either by quickly paying off old debts or contacting the company to work out some kind of payment plan. Raising your credit score will help you to get significantly better rates on any future loans. No longer will you have to consider going hat in hand to a place that promises “Bad credit, no credit, no problem!” Conversely, if you have excellent credit, you can begin thinking about the feasibility of a new loan for home improvement, or perhaps financing a new car. In either case, staying on top of your credit score is important for intelligent planning and spending this year.

Assess Your Finances More Closely

Most people stay on top of the big financial burdens and responsibilities they have. It isn’t very common to totally space out on your mortgage payment or electricity bill, and if you do you most likely need to get your income under control. The problem is, many people stop tracking their finances beyond these big recurring bills. It is comforting to think that the money you spend on fast food, electronics and clothing doesn’t really warrant tracking, since you can still pay all of your bills on time. Quite the opposite, staying on top of your daily spending can do wonders for your financial life. If you make a conscious effort to record where all of your money goes, you will likely be surprised at how much of it is wasted and could instead be saved. This year, try to assess your finances closely and use your findings to eliminate needless spending. The savings you accumulate from this practice can no doubt be put to better use.

Begin a Sensible Investment Portfolio (Or Expand Your Existing One)

After the recent market crash, there have emerged two kinds of people. The first type became very frightened of the market in general after what happened. These people refuse to invest, nervous that they “might loose it all because its just too risky.” The second kind of people are the savvy investors who looked at the down market and saw opportunity. These people went right ahead investing intelligently, understanding that the market always corrects itself, and when it does they will rise with it. In 2010, try to be the second kind of person, the one who intelligently invests regardless of the recent crash. This not to say that you should carelessly throw all of your savings into a couple of choice stocks. Rather, dedicate a reasonable portion of your income into a broad portfolio of stocks and index funds. This advice especially applies to the under 40 audience. Wise investors recommend that this is the time in life where it pays to invest aggressively, because you stand to gain the most and lose the least. Saving money in a bank account and accruing interest is better than nothing, but don’t be afraid of the market, for it can earn you far more per dollar than almost any other standard savings available.

Set Long Range Goals

It’s all well and good to set short term financial goals such as “I want my savings to grow 10% this year.” Often however, this isn’t enough. Long range goals are just as important as short term ones. Long range goals are less specific than short range ones, as the scope of your finances cannot be precisely predicted ten years from now. Thus, long range goals are things like, “I want to make sure I have $500,000 saved for retirement by age 50.” You should have an idea as to how you can make this happen, but the specifics of the plan will inevitably change with the ebb and flow of your income. Having long range financial goals helps put your entire financial future into a broader context, and can facilitate more prudent decisions regarding spending and saving over the length of the plan. This year, ask yourself where you want to be financially five, ten and twenty years down the line. Use these ambitions to formulate your personal long range goals.

Set Specific Targets For Your Savings

Image 10

One of the biggest deterrents to building a robust savings account is the lack of any specific targets that you are saving for. It can be hard to psychologically motivate yourself to pour money into a savings account simply for the sake of having a lot of savings. Combat this demotivating pit-fall by dividing your savings account up on paper into specific targets for the money. For example, if you would one day like to own a boat, get a new condo, and finance a new car, you might rank these targets in order of importance and dedicate percentages of your savings to them. The new boat may occupy 25% of your savings, and as you add money to the account you will begin to see your dreams come closer and closer to fruition. Keep track of how far away you are from purchasing your targets on paper. This will be very motivating to you, and you will begin to see the money you don’t put into savings as money that could have gone to that new condo or car, rather than some nebulous label such as “savings.”

Midwest Economy Growing Stronger

By Daniel Costello

More businesses in the Chicago region were expanding in December than at any time in the past 16 months. That's according to the The Institute for Supply Management-Chicago's Business Barometer.

The business activity index rose to 60 percent from 56.1 percent in November. It's the highest reading since August 2008 and was stronger than many forecasts.

Readings above 50 percent indicate expansion, and below 50 percent indicate contraction, suggesting business activity is increasing.

The national Institute for Supply Management manufacturing index will be released Monday, and the ISM non-manufacturing index a week from today.

Your Next Business Trip Could Come with a Full Body Scan

One reason Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab went through the security line undetected was that nobody saw the bomb in his underwear. As a result, some airports, including all Dutch airports with US-bound flights, and Chicago’s O’Hare airport, will start using full body scan machines as part of their security protocol.

Although the machines are expensive and controversial–nobody wants full-body scan pictures of themselves to end up on the Internet–the TSA is still planning to employ more scanning, or WBI, machines. At present, there are WBI machines at 19 airports in the nation.

Under current protocols, the TSA will give you a choice as to whether to walk through the machine or receive a pat down. Which would you choose, considering the WBI images below?

Morning Report: GMAC To Get New Bailout; Fewer Finished Xmas Lists

By Daniel Costello

The Treasury Department plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that it will give GMAC Inc, parent company of Planet Money sponsor Ally Bank, around $3.5 billion in additional capital, on top of $12.5 billion already received since December 2008, sources told The Detroit News.

The announcement, expected within days, will coincide with GMAC taking additional steps to absorb losses related to its mortgage operations, these people said. The cleanup is designed to return the Detroit-based finance company to profitability in the first quarter of 2010, according to the paper.

The new capital will likely allow GMAC to avert placing its ailing mortgage unit, Residential Capital LLC, or ResCap, into bankruptcy, the newspaper reported, citing these people.

"As we have previously stated, GMAC has been conducting a strategic review of its business and evaluating options to address the challenges at ResCap and the mortgage operations," said GMAC spokeswoman Gina Proia in an statement.

The U.S. Commerce Department is reportedly set to impose preliminary anti-dumping duties on imports of steel grating from China.

The duties were imposed after Chinese steel-grating imports surged to $91 million in 2008, up from $8.8 million in 2006, reports cited the U.S. Commerce Department as saying Tuesday.

Dumping is the practice of selling a product in a foreign market for less than either the price in the home country or the cost of making the product as a way of gaining long-term market share.

U.S. trade officials assigned a preliminary duty of 145.18% to all Chinese steel grating, except those from two producers -- Ningbo Jiulong Machinery Manufacturing Co. and Sinosteel Yantai Steel Grating Co. -- whose product will reportedly only face a 14.36% duty.

Steel grating is commonly used in flooring applications, such as walkways and platforms.

The Commerce Department will make a final ruling in April, the reports said.

And an unprecedented 22 percent of U.S. consumers said they did not finish their Christmas shopping this year as fewer discounts kept many wallets closed, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

While nearly 63 percent said bigger deals were needed to loosen their purse strings, about 11 percent blamed bad weather that hit the U.S. East Coast and Midwest on the weekend before Christmas.

In a typical year, 82 percent to 88 percent of consumers complete their holiday shopping.

Light-Emitting Wallpaper to Replace Light Bulbs?

lightbulb
Image: EcoFriendly Tips

Energy-saving lightbulbs may reduce carbon output, but there’s something twice as efficient in the works: Wallpaper. A Welsh startup has received more than $500,000 from the UK government-backed Carbon Trust to produce light-emitting wallpaper. The Financial Times reports:

The (Carbon) trust has given a £454,000 grant to Lomox, a Welsh start-up company, to accelerate the development of its “light emitting wallpaper”. The material, which uses organic light emitting diode or OLED technology, runs on very low voltages and is twice as efficient as today’s energy-saving bulbs.

It could reach the market as soon as 2012, said Ken Lacey, chief executive of Lomox. Other companies are investigating OLED technology, either for flat displays or for room lighting but have not succeeded commercially because of high costs and short operating lifetimes.

Patents filed by Lomox overcame both problems, Mr Lacey said. Manufacturers would apply its light-emitting chemical on to wallpaper with low-voltage electrical connections: “It gives a very natural, sunlight-type of lighting with the full colour range.”

This invention is both useful and game-changing. It reminds me that the next wave of brilliant startups may well come from the sustainability sector. As management guru C.K. Prahalad stated in the Harvard Business Review, “sustainability is the mother lode of innovations that yield both bottom-line and top-line returns.”

What other game-changing, useful inventions are in the pipe?

Business Travel Essentials : Optimize Your Biz Trip

While not most business travelers live out of suitcases George Clooney style, we still do have to travel several times a year when conference calls and Webex just don’t cut the mustard. Traveling around the clock, attending conferences, meeting clients, making presentations and closing deals are necessities and this kind of lifestyle, even if only for a week, can be incredibly exhausting.

Life can be hectic and stressful for workaholics and can drive us over the edge if we do not carefully organize our business trips. To help biz travelers make the most of your trip, cut down on exhaustion and get the most relaxation you can while on the road, we’ve listed out some things that we think can be very essential and should be compulsorily carried by all business people who travel. Again, this is not just to increase their productivity while traveling, but also to make traveling lives less stressful and more relaxing.

  • Constant Connectivity : Businesses need constant connectivity these days. Any interruption in a business person access to the interne can affect his or her business negatively. Laptops, netbooks:, and smartphones are all standard accessories of a business person today, but what is the use of all of them if there isn’t a way to connect to the Internet when you are traveling? The MiFi is a small device that acts like a modem that can convert your cell phone into a secured Wi-Fi network.

    Mifi

This one item has to be part of a business traveler’s toolkit because with this, even a Blackberry can be transformed into an Internet workstation. Better yet, using the Mi-Fi can cut back on hotel Internet expenses and airport web expenses, and you never have to be dependent on Panera or Starbucks Wifi again.

  • Battery Backup : Since most traveling business people live out of laptops & netbooks just as much as they live out of their suitcases, constant usage can drain the laptop batteries all the time. Most times, these people do not have access to an electrical outlet, or they simply don’t have the time to charge their laptop batteries. The same goes for mobile phones, and when they lose their battery charge on their net books and mobile phones, the whole world can look lost to them. This is why it is essential to carry battery backups in the form of extra batteries is important for any business traveler that does not want to get cut-off from the rest of the world while traveling.
  • Reading Material : Good business magazines are a business traveler’s best companion. Reading business magazines not only helps pass time when you are hopping airports and waiting for long hours at the gates, but they also keep your business knowledge updated and your creative mind constantly churning out new ideas. Most successful business travelers have regular magazine subscriptions to Fast Company, Fortune or Inc. anyways, so the mags will be the first things into the suitcase when packing for the trip.
  • Do Not Iron : Wrinkle free clothes and comfortable shoes & slippers are definite musts in a biz traveler’s travel tool kit, and easy to pack into the carry on. Since the constant travel will leave no time to give your clothes for a laundry wash and iron, and since there’s no way you’re going to iron your clothes when you are traveling, it’s better to pack your suitcase with wrinkle free clothes if you don’t wish to attend your business meetings in shabby, wrinkled clothes. One suit, some wrinkle free khakis, a couple of shirts and a change into your t-shirt & shorts should be enough.
  • Protect Your Feet : You’re also going to spend a lot of time in your shoes, so emphasis must be given to comfort as against style if you don’t want to end up with blisters and tired and painful feet at the end of the trip. Cole Haan and Rockport both make shoes that are comfortable and present well. When you get back to your hotel, always be sure to change into your slippers (or bare feet) whenever you don’t have to be in your shoes. This lets your feet breathe and you will find that it also takes a lot of stress off of you. Some hotels also rent sneakers to use in the gym. This may or may not be the most sanitary option, and may not be an option if your have size 16 feet, but bringing one less pair of shoes on a one week trip can really lighten the load, especially if you want to get in some exercise in between lunch at Chilis and steakhouse dinners.
  • Lighten Your Load : Disposable underwear is very important to keep your personal hygiene on level with your outward appearance. Underwear can get pretty cheap and its better to pack a bunch of them if you want to avoid the wait for laundry service, or if you don’t want to spend time during your hectic schedule washing your underwear in the sink John Candy style.
  • Pamper Yourself : Take advantage of hotel amenities like your robe, slippers & order extra pillows for your room. Use your hotel time as pampering time to relax and recharge, while even hitting the jacuzzi or grabbing a massage if you have a chance. If I’ve learned one thing from James Bond movies, it’s that when 007 checks into a hotel, one of the first things he’ll do is take a long bath, shave and order room service. If you can, take advantage of your stay and conserve your energy for your meetings and mad dashes to the airport.
  • Bag it Up : A comfortable & nimble bag for your laptop is as essential as comfortable shoes for yourself. Since your laptop is going to get through all the grinds of travel just as yourself, protecting it by giving it a nice and comfortable laptop bag will only ensure that your sidekick does not conk of in the middle of your journey. Make sure that your iPod is loaded with your favorite music and videos if you don’t want to end bored on flights that don’t have the latest in music and video or in hotel rooms in far off lands that don’t provide any sort of entertainment.
  • Stay Strong : Constant travel can upset your circadian rhythm and cause you severe jetlag, keep Melatonin at hand to set your sleep patterns right and to avoid jet lags. Also drink plenty of water, every chance you get. Though energy drinks are available almost everywhere nowadays, having several 5 hour energy drinks in your suitcase will ensure that you don’t feel tired or end up sleeping during an important biz meeting. I also eluded to exercise earlier. Sometimes on the road you just don’t have time to hit the hotel gym, nor do you have room for the gym shoes and extra clothes. To keep up your routine, here are some easy workouts to do while in your hotel room.

If you’re a biz traveler, and if you have a toolkit that has all the above items, rest assured, you’ll never miss an appointment, and feel tired or stressed making business on the go. What else do you take on the road?
