Long before the days of massive promotional campaigns and media appearances for film publicity, was the humble film trailer. Audiences retained their seats during the interval, awaiting the first look of the next blockbuster. And thus, a to-be-released film piggybacked on the one showing. All well and good.
Prakash Jha's much awaited multi-starrer Rajneeti's trailer was all set to be unveiled with 3 Idiots, which was one of the highlights of this week. However, reports now suggest that, in an apparent flip flop, the producers of 3 Idiots have decided against carrying the Rajneeti theatrical.
A spokesperson from Rajneeti's producers confirmed to Bollywood Hungama that the film promo will not be a part of the 3 Idiots prints which are being dispatched across the country. "Yes, it was communicated to us yesterday that the promo of Rajneeti will not be carried along with the Indian prints of 3 Idiots as planned before. But the overseas prints might have it." The reason being that the overseas prints have already been dispatched.

Her cat eyes draw you in her world of fame and fortune. Then you begin to understand how unfortunate you are not to have her in your life. Then your eyes open up and you see the reality that you're still interviewing her. Then you start to go red in fury, but for Celina Jaitley, she's been busy painting the town red after she won her first Best Actress Award at the Cairo International Film Festival. And it's a fact that the colour red has indeed proved lucky for her, thanks to her film Red, she got her first overseas agent, then went on to get her first English film and then again winning the Best Actress Award. With her striking good looks and talent, Celina has become Bollywood's most glamorous actresses. But not any more. For her latest film, Accident on Hill Road, due to release on the last day of this year, the leading lady has gained weight, cut her hair short looking completely de-glam and goes on to say, "People will now look beyond my glamour image and take me seriously as an actor." UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent got to chat with the lovely Celina on the challenges in portraying the real life characters on screen, her new hairstyle, her rapport with co-stars Farooq Sheikh and Abhimanyu, her instant international fame and her confidence that 2010 will bring her even more success and good luck than 2009.
First thing's first, your first ever award for an English language film as the Best Actor Female at the Cairo International Film Festival. Still in a state of shock?
Now comes the after shocks (laughs). I think there couldn't have been a better beginning than this. This is completely justifiable. The award is a proof of the fact that hard work does pay off at the end of the day, someday (laughs).
How important is it to be 'just' to your character in a film based on a real life incident?
The thing about real life stories is that you cannot act them out. You have to be it. Being true to the character was the most difficult part which, by the way, was American but has been re-adapted to India. Yes, there were a lot of issues to it but I feel that it is important for an actor like me to dabble in a diverse cinema and Accident on Hill Road is one of those films which is going to be a new genre all together. For me, this film is an entertaining experiment and I hope people enjoy it as much as I loved being a part of it.
The only way I could do the role was if I stripped every bit of Celina from me.
Even your hairdo makes you look different and de-glam.
Thank you. Yes, some actors have a glamorous image for so long that they can live in that image for the rest of their lives. I can also do that. But the actor in me wasn't satisfied and it was very difficult for me to prove myself. The only way I could do that was if I stripped every bit of Celina from me. That's what I did for this film. I stripped every bit of Celina in me, including my hair. The director of course, suggested that and I instantly agreed to do a different hairdo.
And you do seem to have put on a bit of weight too.
(laughs) Yes. Good observation. I've even put on a lot of weight for this film. I completely stopped working out two months before this film so that I didn't look muscular, toned, and just looked like a next door girl. I did everything I could to make this real life story come to life. It's been a difficult and an endearing task to make Accident on Hill Road.
How does it feel to be the senior most actor in the entire cast along with Mr Farooq Sheikh? And how much of a rapport did you share with your new co-star Abhimanyu?
It feels great. Abhimanyu, my co-star in the film is relatively a new comer but I feel he is one of the most talented actors we have today. He proved that in Anurag Kashyap's Gulaal. Actors like him don't need to prove themselves at all. I felt that the best thing about this film is that both, me and Abhimanyu and Farooq saab are three different identities. We're people who've made their identities in the film industry in a totally different way. In a film like this, all this works so well.
You're pretty optimistic about bringing in your New Year, 2010, with a success smile from Accident on Hill Road?
I pray for that...and a lot of people are telling me that 2010 is going to be even better for me than 2009. I am really looking forward to it. At the end of the day, it's about appreciation, whether the film does well or not. This is one of those films where I believe that I'll receive appreciation for my work.
I don't know what the box office result of An Accident on Hill Road is going to be but I'm sure people are going to love everyone's work in the movie.
After A.R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty, it's Celina Jaitley on the international podium receiving an award. Do you think that your flight has finally taken off now?
All I know is the fact that my flight was always in air. People refuse to acknowledge it, which is fine with me because I'm ready to work over and over again till I prove myself. As an actor, I've started making my mark. People will now look beyond my glamour image and take me seriously as an actor, thanks to the Cairo International Film Festival.
You best performance you once mentioned came out from the film Red. With your latest release, here's wishing you 'Paint the town red Celina'.
Thank you so much. But to be honest with you, Red was a commercial attempt to a parallel cinema and though it may not have done well at the box office, it gave me my first English film, it's the film which got me my overseas agent. Sometimes, lessons come in disguise of failure. Director Nikhil Advani is in a fix. The shooting of his new film Patiala House started yesterday, December 21. And he has still not been able to find the right face to play the junior Akshay.
The scenes are part of a flashback where Akshay's screen father Rishi Kapoor interacts with his son at age 17.
Says Nikhil, "I've to find someone who looks and behaves like Akshay. His personality is too strong in the audiences' mind to sign any teenager. I've to get someone who resembles Akshay physically and who can act, because the scenes are very important. I'm in a fix."
One option, as reported earlier, is to hold an all-India talent hunt. But Nikhil is not in favour of it.
Says Nikhil, "The talent hunt is an option. But I don't much care for it. It's cumbersome and would attract too much attention. I'd rather go by Akshay's cousin if he agrees. Every time I ask, he smiles. If this doesn't materialize, then we'll reluctantly have to launch the talent hunt."
Nikhil also needs an actor to play the young Rishi Kapoor. "But that won't be such a problem. The physical resemblance is not that important here. Didn't Saif Ali Khan play the younger Rishi Kapoor convincingly in Love Aaj Kal? We need an actor of about 35. I plan to cast someone unknown."

A lot of release dates are likely to change. While the makers of RANN have decided to shift the release by one week [it was slated for release on January 22 along with VEER, but is now shifted to January 29], the makers of TEEN PATTI have also decided to shift the film from January to February. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley, TEEN PATTI will hit the screens on February 26.
Interestingly, three more films are slated for release on February 26: KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK [Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone], ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? [Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sen Sharma] and SHAAPIT [Aditya Narayan]. While James Cameron's Avatar is creating ripples at the Indian box office queuing up for the visual spectacle, many would be unaware that that an Indian company was part of a team that worked on the awe-inspiring visual effects of the film.
Mumbai based vfx house Prime Focus has contributed a number of shots to stereoscopic 3D film. The movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver, features numerous stereographic and 'Holotable' displays, animated graphics, immersive environments and other visual effects created by Prime Focus.
A team of 90 artists which worked on making Avatar a visual spectacle was spread across Prime Focus' Los Angeles, Vancouver and Winnipeg facilities, with President & Senior Visual Effects Supervisor Chris Bond and Visual Effects Producer Chris Del Conte driving the project out of the LA office. The bulk of Prime Focus' work was done for the film's Bio lab and Ops Center, the bustling hub for military operations and one of the key environments in the film.
"Our experience working with stereoscopic 3D material, both on the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D and through our proprietary View-D technology, more than prepared us for Avatar," said Bond.
Prime Focus designed displays for the Op Center's Holotable over which the film's main characters discuss their missions and plans to mine a valuable mineral found on the planet Pandora. In one key scene, the film's protagonist Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Col. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) bring up a three-dimensional hologram of the 'Home Tree,' where the Navi, Pandora's indigenous population, live.
The Prime Focus VFX team also created displays called Immersives that provided a 180-degree stereo perspective, allowing military personnel to control air traffic flow in 3D. Additionally, Prime Focus contributed CG helicopters, buildings and atmospheric elements seen from the Ops Center and Commissary windows in several sequences.

Get set for an epic take in the offing. This year's most anticipated release, 3 Idiots, has a running length of close to 3 hours. Taking audiences through different locations in the country and across time zones, this Rajkumar Hirani film is in fact his longest ever when compared to his earlier two efforts - Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai.
"That's true," confirms Hirani. "Both the films in the Munnabhai series were under 2.5 hours. However, 3 Idiots required a longer duration. I am not worried about the length factor though."
Well, even for audiences it should be pretty much the case of ' all izzz well'. Longer stories, if told well, have traditionally worked quite well at the box office. Some of the biggest classics in the history of Indian cinema like Lagaan, Sholay and Mughal E Azam have all crossed the 3 hour mark. Yes, those were the times when only single screens ruled and hence the revenue earned through a larger number of shows wasn't a criteria for a film's length. However, the fact remains that the biggest ever grosser in the history of Indian cinema, Ghajini, lasted for a couple of minutes over 3 hours.
Says a trade follower, "I am aware of people's expectations where they want to see more of an actor or a director, if their body of work over the years has been impressive enough. Remember those Amitabh Bachchan films in the 80's? Or the ones directed by Subhash Ghai? Each of them was mandated to be magnum opus and it was an unwritten rule that their films have a running length of at least 3 hours. Similar are the expectations from an Aamir Khan film today."
His comments do see good validation if one looks at every film that Aamir has done in the current decade. The running length of Dil Chahta Hai (180 mins), Lagaan (225 mins), Mangal Pandey (165 mins), Rang De Basanti (150 mins), Fanaa (170 mins), Taare Zameen Par (165 mins) and Ghajini (180 mins) has been close to 3 hours or even more.
"At the end of the day, it's the story and the story telling that does the trick, not the film's length. Yes, we have seen audiences rejecting What's Your Raashee? due to its length of close to 3.5 hours but also because the film dragged at places. Seeing Hirani's work over the years, the length is a non-issue and one truly believes and hopes that the screenplay holds audience's attention. 3 Idiots is carrying great vibes, the holiday season is on and the festivities would be in progress well into the New Year. I don't see any reason why anyone would even think about the length factor," concludes the trade expert.

Katrina Kaif has had three big hits in 2009. A track record that none of her peers can begin to equal in these times of creative and box office recession. That isn't all. She has just been declared as the sexiest Asian actress by a leading Asian website from London.
But the girl remains grounded, so much so that she refuses to budge from her abode in a bustling part of Mumbai. "I know I've been reading about relocating my home. I admit I've looked at a few properties. But nothing seriously. Though it's a little noisy on my street I'm too attached to the place I stay in. I'm also too lazy to make a move. Yes I'll need a bigger place when my sister Isabelle joins me. But right now she's studying acting in the US. There's still time," yawns Bollywood's hottest and sexiest girl.
So is she planning to move home? "Not at all. I've always wanted a home by the sea. But I love my current home too much. So no plans of moving"
No plans of signing any new films yet either. "It's very sweet of directors to mention my name in forthcoming projects. I feel privileged. But I haven't said yes to anything new. At the moment I've cut my workload by half because of my ill health."
As for being designated one of Asia's sexiest women by Eastern Eye Katrina laughs, "Me? Hot and sexy? Nah. People should see me at home. I'm painfully unglamorous. Just another working girl making a living."
