Make it Easy on Yourselves and Just Surrender to Valentine's Day

Valentines Day, as you may already know, is a movie coming out on February 12 that stars everyone. Literally everyone: Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Jessica Biel. Even Taylor Swift is acting in this movie (and that's only like half the cast.) Watching the trailer for Valentine's Day, a new version of which just came out, you might feel feelings of annoyance, irritation, and that special kind of rage reserved for industries that you know are trying to manipulate you. This is completely understandable. All reasonably critical Americans should be insulted by this movie's existence, but it's time to just let it go. We're living in the post-Love, Actually world, now, and we're going to have at least one movie like this per year until they stop making money, which will probably be after we're all dead, because even the people who claim to hate these movies the most, with their cheesy-lazy montages, lovesick adorable children, and casts of thousands of big-name stars lured to the film by the promise of just a few hours of work, still find a way to hate-watch them eventually (and sometimes, even on opening weekend.) So go forth into the next two months of aggressive marketing and publicity for this movie with the knowledge that yes, you are too smart to fall for gimmicks, but that as with a certain controversial holiday, people who hate Valentines Day are even more annoying than people who love Valentines Day.

ABC Orders Pilot Based on Danny Wallace's Awkward Situations for Men

Men: they're huge these days! Yesterday ABC announced an early pilot order for an experimental-sounding new comedy based on Danny Wallace's (Yes Man) upcoming book Awkward Situations for Men:

"The project, from Warner Bros. TV and Heydaycq Films, is inspired by Wallace's upcoming book "Awkward Situations for Men" and follows him as he moves to the U.S. with his wife, only to discover that his everyday behavior clashes with American values and gets him into trouble."

So, like a British Curb Your Enthusiasm? We'll take it, then!

January Jones Will Return to Mad Men

In an interview with E! Online this week, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner confirmed that Betty will continue to be a part of the Mad Men story in Season 4, saying "I don't like spoilers, but you will find out that January's contract has been renewed." Not a surprise, but good to know. [E! Online]

Murder Weapon Missing in Bizarre UWS Case

That seemingly Tarantino-penned horrific killing spree on the Upper West Side that has perplexed New Yorkers this week has taken another strange turn: NYPD spokesmen now say that ballistics tests show that the semi-automatic pistol recovered at the scene was not the weapon the gunman Hector Quinones used to kill two of the victims (the third victim's throat was slashed), and that they think Quinones stashed it or someone else came to pick it up. But Quinones would have had to have stashed it before falling to his death with his pants down while trying to escape the murder scene, so it's a strange turn indeed for this sad, bizarre story.

Film and Creative Writing student, soap opera actor, and performance artist James Franco returns to host SNL again tonight, the last show of the '00s. Will the man of all seasons do a solid, goofy job like he did last year? Will Cameron Diaz show up again for no apparent reason at all? We'll have to see, but after the parade of children who have hosted so far this season, it's nice that they hired a grown man to finish out the aughts.

James Cameron Knows He's a "Difficult Director"

Yesterday the New York Times' Carpetbagger blog posted excerpts from a Hollywood Reporter video round-table discussion with top filmmakers about studio test screenings and how they mess up their movies. The best part came at the end, when James Cameron's fellow directors hazed him a bit over his reputation as hard to work with:

Hollywood Reporter: Would it bother any of you if the studios thought of you as a “difficult” director?

Mr. Reitman: James?

Mr. Daniels: James?

Mr. Cameron: I was waiting for that. (Laughs.)

Snowed-In Senate Has Breakthrough on Health Care

The Senate says they won a pivotal vote today from longtime holdout Senator Ben Nelson, Democrat of Nebraska, who will become the critical 60th vote needed to pass the Senate's health care bill on to the House, but not before a few concessions were made to Nelson:

"Mr. Reid’s amendment includes major restrictions on abortion that were intended to win support for the bill from Mr. Nelson. Under Mr. Reid’s proposal, health insurance plans are not required or forbidden to cover abortion services, but there is a major exemption that would give states power to prohibit abortion coverage in the insurance markets, or exchanges, where most health plans would be sold.

Mr. Reid’s amendment also includes a substantial increase in federal contributions to Nebraska’s costs of providing Medicaid coverage to the poor."

The compromise was reached after many hours of negotiation with Sen. Nelson.
