"Radio is for class, not mass audience" - Sonal Sehgal

Sonal Sehgal Radio arrives in a couple of days from now and along with Shenaz Treasuryvala, Sonal Sehgal is one of the two leading ladies opposite Himesh Reshammiya. In a conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Sonal is happy to declare that Radio is a film made mainly for class audience, how she can very much relate to the subject of the film and whether the film actually goes on to narrate ground reality. Looking at the storyline of Radio, it seems to be pretty much exploring the complexities in today's relationships. Is that true? Absolutely. In fact I see something like this happening all around with me with my friends. When the film's script came to me, I was like 'wow, finally there is somebody who is making a film like this'. The film makes a statement that 'Wake up guys, smell the coffee'. Radio comes with the kind of subject that everybody is waiting for. Something like this has never happened in Bollywood. It tells people to take a real look into relationships. Radio comes with the kind of subject that everybody is waiting for How much do you actually relate to the film's subject? Very much. In the film, my character Pooja gets divorced with Vivaan (Himesh Reshammiya). But still, there is no love lost. They are still friends. In today's relationships, there isn't anything black and white, well, unless you have been a part of some really dirty break up. Nobody centres his/her life around love any more. Relationships have become like a habit. It's not like after a break up, you never see that person's face again. It's not that hardcore. It happens that two months after a break up, you feel a little low and instinctively call up your ex-girlfriend or boyfriend because that's a person you have actually shared quite some time with. The intention is not to get back to that person. It's just that this person has also been a friend for such a long time and it takes time for a relationship to fade away. Himesh says that unlike his previous two films that were targeted at masses, this one is a complete class affair. Do you agree? Of course Radio is a classy affair. See, Radio is a contemporary enough subject and the luxury of such a relationship, as evident in the film, is for classes. Look at masses; for them it's primarily about meeting ends. On the other hand, Radio is about complications, social networking sites etc. In fact, masses may not really understand what we are discussing here. This is something that we have been very clear about even during our entire promotion because we didn't want to give a wrong impression to people. Perhaps my cook may come to me tomorrow and say that 'Ma'm, hamein to samajh hi nahi aaya ki picture kya thi'. I am prepared for that because the movie is mainly for classes. Radio is a classy affair Radio is a two heroine setup with Shenaz as well. Like any other leading lady, even you would have wanted to ensure that you both get even footage, right? See, both of us have really well etched out characters due to which none of us are counting our minutes on screen. One has to be mainly worried about whether your character is sound enough or not. Since it is, I didn't feel insecure at all. This is why there was no competition. If anyone of us had to think so, then first and foremost we should have worried about Himesh as a competition. Everybody has his own place and each one works because of other. Sonal Sehgal But when two good looking women come together, there is bound to be some competition? Aah, you are hell bent on creating a war here (laughs). When I say there was nothing wrong between Shenaz and me, it's a fact. You may question on our dressing style and all. Perhaps one can even sit and fight that why are my clothes different from hers. But then look at it this way, my character is mostly seen in the house while Shenaz is in a radio station. So obviously I would be in my tank tops and shorts while she would be more dressed up. (Smiles) I can't fight with the director that why have you given her a pretty dress. One has to think logically. I can't fight with the director on why he has given Shenaz a pretty dress Talking about dressing up, the current crop of females is quite uninhibited when it comes to skin show. In fact it has almost become a part of an actress profile. Any boundaries that you have set for yourself? For me, it is not about skin show but wearing something in which I am comfortable enough. Take for example Katrina Kaif, she has not worn a bikini till date but she does wear shorts. Look at the kind of impression that she has managed to make over last few years. The ground reality is that people in big cities do wear tank tops and shorts so it's not a big deal at all. Other than Radio, you also play the main lead in Nagesh Kukunoor's Aashayein (with John Abraham). Didn't you ever feel like beginning with a conventional love story? When you are not a star child and don't come from a filmy family, you don't really sit down and decide on what you pick and choose from. Having said that, I have been a huge fan of Nagesh Kukunoor right from his first film so Aashayein was indeed a good beginning. Of course, God always has a better plan and after Radio, I am sure there would be many more positive outings. One can't deny the fact though that Radio has too much of competition around. The film follows De Dana Dan, comes along with Paa and is followed by Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year. Well, in that case, all the best to all of us (laughs). I am sure there are enough people out there who want to catch different kind of cinema. Other than that, 'kismat' is something that no one can fight and compete with, so why worry? Let's wait, watch and hope for the best!

Sunil Shetty skips pa-in-law's 80th birthday for Goa Film Festival

Sunil Shetty It was, after all, his first ever film festival. Sunil Shetty who attended the 40th International Film Festival in Goa on Saturday for the screening of his new film Red Alert, has reluctantly chosen to play the professional instead of a family man for once. Explains Sunil, "I had to choose between attending my screening in Goa and going for my father-in-law's 80th birthday celebration in the US. My wife and her entire family, who are like my own family, is there. I am like a son in my wife's family. Moreover, ever since my father-in-law lost his wife he hasn't been himself. It was a heartbreaking decision. But one that my wife helped me to make." Sunil's father-in-law turns 80 this week. And it is a very special occasion especially for a family-oriented man like Sunil. "But I had to be in Goa for the screening of Red Alert on Saturday (28 November). The film was a sell-out at all the screens in Goa. The film is being recognized at international film festivals. I think the goras are very keen to know about the naxalite movement. They've heard about other forms of unrest across the world. But naxalism is new to them." Sunil is also excited because he has never attended a film festival before. "Goa is my first film festival. Can you believe it? In all these years I've never been to a film festival in my life! I wasn't there earlier this month at the South Asian International Film Festival in New York where I won the Best Actor Award for my performance in Red Alert. This time I had to be there for my festival." Sunil whose realistic performance as a naxalite in Red Alert is getting him critical applause is also pleased with the response to his just-released no-brainer De Dana Dan. "It is a full-on paisa-wasool Priyadarshan film. And we've all given our sweat and blood to it." Sunil had a major accident while shooting the climax which kept him bedridden for months. "The chest region is still not fully healed. But like I said De Dana Dan was a whole lot of fun. Then I've another comedy Anees Bazmee's No Problem coming up. I think I am finally done with making mistakes in my career."

Karan Johar signs Rensil for next film with UTV

Karan Johar Notwithstanding the box office failure of Kurbaan, Karan Johar, Rensil D'Silva and UTV Motion Pictures would be making another movie together. In fact, work has already begun on the scripting of the film and Karan has declared that the trio has a point to prove this time around. "At Dharma Productions, one of the prime virtues is that of loyalty. Our track record shows that. I have never doubted Rensil's capability even though the film hasn't worked at the box office. This doesn't stop me from having him direct another film for my production house. Similarly, our association with UTV has been great too. I am thrilled with the kind of support they gave to Wake Up Sid and Kurbaan. This is why it is imperative that we all come together again", says Karan Johar. After Kurbaan, Karan admits that quite a few lessons have been learnt and he is sure that they won't be repeated. He comments, "With our next outing together, we have to prove to one and all that we can come up with not just a critically acclaimed film but also a commercial success. I have in fact already told Rensil to go ahead with his next film. I am sure he would be rocking again and come up with a quality outing." Kurbaan, although a well made film, saw some brickbats coming it's way due to it's serious theme and stark execution. Looking at the film's fate, is the team of Karan, Rensil and UTV looking at playing safe and coming up with an out and out commercial outing? Or are they still going to follow an offbeat route? "It is not in Rensil's DNA to play to the gallery", smiles Karan, "He is not into quintessential routine Hindi cinema. Yes, he would be making something unique this time around too though the bottom line would be to keep things commercially viable for sure."

It's bonus time: Akshay-Katrina rain song back in De Dana Dan

De Dana Dan The inevitable has happened. Owing to popular demand, 'Gale Lag Ja' - the rain song and dance number featuring the lead pair of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif - has been added to the film's narrative. Though this much hyped song had created quite some buzz en route to the release of De Dana Dan, it was chopped off from the final copy of the print since it was adding to the film's length. However, the makers of De Dana Dan were open to the idea of incorporating the song as an added bonus if audiences demanded so and the film worked at the box office. With weekend collections being quite strong worldwide, the final call was taken around bringing back the song in the narrative. Confirms Ratan Jain, producer of De Dana Dan, "We were clear that the song would be added only if the film did well at the box office. There was no point doing that if (God forbid) people wouldn't have been going into theatres. Now that the weekend collections are out, we know that there would be repeat audiences for the film. For them, it would be another incentive to watch the film again while for the first timers, it's an added bonus." Since the film's running length is a little less than 3 hours already, would the incorporation of song be of any further impact? "No", says Jain, "The length of De Dana Dan is still the same. To compensate for those 4-5 minutes of the added song, we have edited an equal duration of a few scenes from the film." 'Gale Lag Ja' would now appear in the first half of the film at the point when Akshay calls Katrina to the hotel in order to share the kidnapping plan and then run away with the ransom amount. Meanwhile, Ratan Jain is ecstatic with the kind of collections that the film is showing with every passing day. "Saturday and Sunday were far better than Friday while Monday was more or less similar to Friday, which is superb", he says, "Normally, films fall quite rapidly on Monday but we have stayed on very stable grounds. The collections are superb overseas as well, whether in UK, Gulf or elsewhere. In India, we have seen Rs. 23 crores coming in just from the weekend which is superb. All our distributors are very happy and we are all set for a bountiful first week."

Saurabh Shukla sets the record straight for Raat Gayi Baat Gayi

Actor-writer-director Saurabh Shukla surfaces with his new directorial assignment RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? after a hiatus. After almost five years, to be precise. "I was disheartened after MUDDA and CHEHRAA. I didn't want to make movies just for the heck of it. But I will make up for the lost time by releasing three movies back to back, starting with RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI?," Saurabh smiles. Just recently, RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? was honoured at the South Asian International Film Festival in New York. "I was thrilled," he doesn't hide his feelings, but is quick to add, "I wish to clarify, RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? is not a 'festival film'. It's a film that the audience of today can relate to instantly. In fact, the term 'festival film' doesn't exist anymore. Even hardcore commercial films are showcased at distinguished festivals." Reportedly, there are similarities between RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? and THE HANGOVER. "The two films are poles apart. I'd also like to clarify that I started RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? much before THE HANGOVER was made. In fact, there's an interesting story behind RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI?. The seeds of this film were sown at a party that I attended long back. I was feeling terribly bored and kept staring at people aimlessly. The next morning, I narrated the episode to Rajat [Kapoor], who suggested that I write a story revolving around a party. That's how the story of RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? took shape," Saurabh states. Incidentally, RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? will be the last release of his year. The makers plan to release the film on Thursday, December 31.

It's Thursday for 'Radio'

Himesh Reshammiya has decided to release RADIO on a Thursday, instead of a Friday. "The numbers 4 and 8 aren't lucky for me. KARZZZZ was released on October 17 last year, which totals to 8. I was dead against releasing the film on that date and my worst fears came true when KARZZZ flopped. That's why I decided against releasing RADIO on December 4 [Friday]. Instead, we will release the film on the evening of December 3 [Thursday]," Himesh explains his stand. Himesh is now eagerly awaiting the response to RADIO. This time, Himesh is keen on pleasing the multiplex junta. "You need to accept the fact that the booty comes in from the multiplexes. You need to have the mandate of this segment of moviegoers, if you want to play a long innings. That's precisely why RADIO is targeted at this segment," he states. Wasn't KAJRAARE supposed to be his third release? Reportedly, Studio 18's ISHQ UNPLUGGED will be his fourth release. Has Himesh put KAJRAARE on the backburner? "Definitely not! KAJRAARE is already complete and in all probability, will be my fourth release. It's a big film, it has been shot at several exotic locations and is a full on commercial film. We decided to bring RADIO first to create a strong base at plexes," Himesh reasons.

Shilpa's diva look for her wedding reception

The journey was one from being the famed Bollywood diva to being a faithfully wedded wife of businessman Raj Kundra. After the wedding took place in truly Manglorean style at the Khandala bungalow of Shilpa's friend Kiran Bawa, the doors were left open for a grand reception in Mumbai's swanky hotel for the bigwigs of Bollywood and the corporate world A truly high fashion, yet festive event, Chandni Dev at Bollywood Hungama shows you what Shilpa had hidden away especially for this one. "Here comes the bride" echoed the air in the plush interiors of Grand Hyatt hotel in Mumbai that was destined to be the venue for the reception of the Kundra couple. Shilpa walked in hand in hand with Raj looking every bit the beauty she truly is. Tarun Tahiliani, must be one proud designer at that moment. The friend that he is, he designed an exceptional outfit in gold on the brief given by Shilpa herself. At the mehndi ki rasam, the sangeet and the wedding itself, Shilpa wore nothing but traditional attires, keeping in with sentiments of the events, but she was clear that she wanted to go in for something more western yet nothing too out of line for the main reception. Tarun designed a complete fusion outfit for Shilpa, in a beautiful colour of champagne gold, that went on too accentuate her skin tone beautifully. It wasn't exactly a saree and neither was it really a gown, but it was rather a combination of both. A two piece outfit, the top was a swarovsky encrusted bodysuit with a duchess style flowing sari gown that showed of Shilpa's perfectly toned body and curves to perfection. Having worn heavy kundan jewellery throughout the earlier ceremonies, Shilpa went for a welcome change and complimented her dress with a diamonds and rubies neckpiece and earrings. Keeping with the Punjabi traditions, Shilpa sported the traditional red chuda in her hands. Just like all of Shilpa's outfits and trousseau has been designed by Tarun Tahiliani, Raj's sherwani's for the events were done by Nikhil and Shantanu. For the reception as well, Raj looked like a perfect partner in a black Sherwani designed by the duo. Even sister Shamita looked pretty in a blue sari designed by Manish Malhotra in his typical bling style. A star studded evening brought an end to a big fat Manglorean-Punjabi wedding. It may have been an end to all the rituals involved but for the couple, it's only a beginning. Like they say in a truly Bollywood style "Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost".
