Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 28 Nov 2009 | 6:45 am Johny has a very funny role in 'De Dana Dan' - Priyadarshan
They both are masters of the comedy genre. Priyadarshan has made over 60 movies (across various languages and genres) and is still counting. However, in Bollywood, he is known most for his comic outings. On the other hand Johnny Lever is Bollywood's longest surviving comedian, especially in the times when leading men have started enacting comical and villainous characters. A veteran of over 200 movies, he has literally seen it and done all.
However, in spite of both Priyadarshan and Johnny Lever being a part of the industry for more than 25 years, they never crossed path. Even though Priyadarshan films usually boast of at least half a dozen comic characters, there was never a place for Johnny Lever. There were regulars like Paresh Rawal, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav, Manoj Joshi and Shakti Kapoor in most of his outings but Johnny Lever was always conspicuous by his absence.
This is why it makes for an event of sorts when Priyadarshan and Johnny Lever join hands for De Dana Dan, the first film ever that sees the two together. Though the film has more than two dozen characters, hence being the makers biggest ever comedy, there is promise of a well etched out role for Johnny Lever who would finally be making a debut in a Priyadarshan setup.
"Johnny has a very funny role in De Dana Dan. He plays a professional killer who has never been caught", informs Priyadarshan when asked about the comedian's part in the film, "He dumps people with chloroform. The situation in the film is such that he has been assigned the responsibility of killing somebody but he gets a wrong identity. He starts hunting down someone whom he is not really supposed to kill. All his attempts prove to be futile and how he keeps failing all the time, brings in a lot of humour in the film."
One can't help but ask the film maker though as to what took him so long to rope in Johnny Lever? After all there would have been countless other opportunities where he could have fit in?
"Johnny is a superb actor and both of us coming together should have been something special", says Priyadarshan, "I wanted to give him a role which should disappoint neither him nor me. It should have been worthy enough. Finally, in De Dana Dan, I got a very interesting role for him. When you watch the film, you would see for yourself that how he actually enhances the original Hera Pheri team of Akshay, Suniel and Paresh."
Well, one really hopes so. After all the man can be trusted to stand tall in a massive crowd that comprises of Archana Puran Singh, Asrani, Chunky Pandey, Manoj Joshi, Rajpal Yadav, Tinu Anand, Sharat Saxena and Himani Shivpuri other than the principal star cast.Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 28 Nov 2009 | 6:38 am Parents should also act as censors: Asha ParekhFormer censor board chief and yesteryears actress Asha Parekh says parents should also act as censors, rather than banking on a government agency to do the job for them.Source: Entertainment News | 28 Nov 2009 | 6:34 am Penelope Cruz can't cook!

Source: Entertainment - Google News | 28 Nov 2009 | 3:00 am Subhash K Jha speaks on De Dana Dan
In our school days, we were taught about nonsensical rhymes which were incoherent jumbled words strung together trendily. De Dana Dan is a 150-minute long nonsensical rhyme. Its power to mock every rule of sensible and intelligent filmmaking simply infuriates and exasperates you to a point of complete breakdown of communication between cinema and art.
Art? Well, what do we call this piece of overcooked abomination straight from the prolific Priyadarshan's ever-active oven?
The characters are fairly funny to begin with. Akshay Kumar as Archana Puran Singh's slave-cum-driver is the portrait of anguished hilarity. He brings to his part of the servile toy-boy a kind of facile fury that flaunts an easygoing sense of self-deprecating comedy.
Sunil Shetty as Akshay's partner in the nonsensical rhyme scheme seems to enjoy the comicality initially... At least, he's relaxed until the frames begin to fill up with more characters than the Noah's Arc and the space-ship invented to save mankind in Roland Emerich's 2012 combined.
There're more characters romping in naked confusion in De Dena Dan than in any of Priyadarshan's over-crowded comedies. Two marriageable chicks (Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy, sharing equal footage, if you please) with secret lovers and their harassed fathers, Tinu Anand and Manoj Joshi, an avaricious father-in-law-to-be (Paresh Rawal) and his cretinous son (Chunky Pandey),a tart (Neha Dhupia) who is swilling to sleep with anyone who pays. And that includes poor Vikram Gokhale who
looks as put of place in the boisterous goings-on as Bhimsen Joshi at a Rakhi Sawant live-show.
Creaking and groaning under the weight of thunder-statement De Dana Dan is like a jabbering juggernaut hurling with its fast-talking, constantly-moving army of characters into a region of utter chaos. The scream... sorry... screenplay throws forward a gaggle of incoherent gags which suggest that the melee of characters are more distressed by their financial than emotional condition in life.
Soon, we, the audience cease to figure out what the characters are up to or how they are inter-related, if at all.
Just go with the flow, boss. At times, literally because, at the climax we've the characters swimming and spluttering in a flood of water let loose from a bombed terrace- tank in a luxury hotel.
Who planted the bomb? Is it the funny hitman Johnny Lever with chicken curry on his face? Or the funnier assassin Asrani roaming around the hotel trying to hard sell a corpse in a coffin?
All this, mind it, is supposed to be the summit of hilarity. The jokes depend almost entirely on the actors' ability to say the atrocious lines as though they mean it. Some like Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal succeed. Others don't.
Oh well, you win some, you lose some. At the end of the day, this comedy of incredible mistaken identities and monstrous errors of judgement coaches us on the meaning of 'slapstick'. Everyone slaps the person closest to him or her regardless of the reason or the repercussion.
Zany or just plain witless? You decide.
If this is the present and future of mainstream Hindi entertainment then we need to some serious thinking on the way a coterie of super-successful directors and actors have re-defined entertainment to a state of utter inanity.
De Dana Dan is not a film. It's a series of skits strung together to convey a sense of baggy fun and frivolous entertainment.
No harm done. But, what is the point?Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 28 Nov 2009 | 2:28 am I can't go around asking for roles: Neha DhupiaNeha Dhupia has been around for more than six years now and has done films as diverse as "Mithya" and "Julie".Source: Entertainment News | 28 Nov 2009 | 1:41 am Farhan Akhtar to bond with Hrithik, Abhay in sister's filmMale bonding has always been a strong theme in Farhan Akhtar's career as a director and actor and so he is now excited about starring along with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol in sister Zoya Akhtar's new film.Source: Entertainment News | 28 Nov 2009 | 1:38 am Parents should also act as censors: Asha ParekhFormer censor board chief and yesteryears actress Asha Parekh says parents should also act as censors, rather than banking on a government agency to do the job for them.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 28 Nov 2009 | 1:02 am 'De Dana Dan' is just nonsensical entertainmentFilm: 'De Dana Dan'; Director: Priyadarshan; Cast: Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, Sameera Reddy; Rating: *Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 28 Nov 2009 | 1:02 am Megan Fox gifts sports car to boyfriendHollywood actress Megan Fox believes in pampering her boyfriend Brian Austin Green -- she has just gifted him a sports car.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 28 Nov 2009 | 1:01 am I can't go around asking for roles: Neha DhupiaNeha Dhupia has been around for more than six years now and has done films as diverse as Mithya and Julie. Onir has found a supporting hand in Mira Nair. The filmmaker was completely sold on I Am Omar, a short film belonging to I Am feature - a collection of four stories that Onir is building. Mira loved the concept and after watching I Am Omar, she complimented Onir for his efforts. She also offered any help that the young filmmaker would require in international circuits and especially singled out Rahul Bose for his superb act.
"Mira saw the film in the MIAAC film festival at New York and loved the film. All of us were there - Sanjay (Suri), Rahul (Bose) and I - and she made it a point to let us know that she found the film quite a moving experience. In fact she particularly praised Rahul for the realism that he brought to his character", says Onir whose Sorry Bhai was also screened in the same festival.
I Am Omar is a story that exposes the nexus between the police and male sex workers to harass gay men by using article 377. Other than this film festival, I Am Omar was also screened in quite a few universities all over USA in the days gone by.
Other than Rahul, I Am Omar also stars Abhimanyu Singh and Arjun Mathur (of Barah Aana fame) who has already worked with Mira Nair in a short film.
"I Am Omar is a 25 minutes short film and we are looking to create a widespread awareness around it before I am ready with the entire series", informs Onir, "I Am Abhimanyu and I Am Megha are also complete. Now I am left with I Am Afia which should be wrapped up soon."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 27 Nov 2009 | 11:54 am Mahesh Manjrekar gets creative with 'City of Gold'After two years, Bollywood filmmaker-actor Mahesh Manjrekar has returned to direction with crime thriller "City of Gold".Source: Entertainment News | 27 Nov 2009 | 11:53 am Aamir Khan not to sign new films for one more yearAamir Khan, who is currently busy promoting "3 Idiots", has decided not to take any new acting assignments in 2010 because he wants to concentrate on his three home productions.Source: Entertainment News | 27 Nov 2009 | 11:34 am Focus group screenings and divine blessings for Radio
Radio arrives on Thursday, 3rd December, instead of seeing a conventional Friday release. While the makers are executing promotional plans for the last few days before the film hits the screens, they have already hosted some hush-focus group screenings. While Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots was pretty much in news for the similar 'feedback-seeking' exercise that was done a few weeks back, Himesh and Co. have already held three such screenings since 21st November.
Ishaan Trivedi, director of Radio that stars Sonal Sehgal and Shenaz Treasuryvala as the leading ladies confirms, "We wanted to be quiet about the whole affair rather than making it a media event. The purpose was to get some genuine feedback and hence select people, from all walks of life, were invited to comment on the final product."
As turned out to be the case, the film was given a Thumbs Up by the urban youth (the film's target audience) that appreciated the manner in which the film dealt with today's relationships, where issues like chemistry and compatibility are pretty much in the forefront.
"I was clear about one thing that I didn't want anyone to go unnecessarily gaga about the whole affair", confesses Ishaan, "There is no point in doing that because the real junta will anyways announce their verdict once the film hits the screens. So, I invited some of my closest friends and colleagues to watch the film and be extremely blunt about what they felt."
Meanwhile, Himesh Reshammiya is doing his own to ensure that Radio gets it's due at the box office. While he is happy about the profit zone that the film has entered, courtesy all the pre-release rights bringing in the moolah, he is also travelling to Shirdi for the blessings.
"I would be visiting Shirdi on the day Radio releases. Thursday is anyways Saibaba's day so it can't get more auspicious than this", confirms Himesh, "I am praying to God that the film works for all of us."
Confident about the prospects of the film which would be seeing a limited release even in multiplexes, Himesh comments, "We have tried to do something very fresh with the subject, treatment and lingo in the film. I have tried to be as natural as possible and Ishaan has done a fabulous job. Moreover, Vivan's character is someone with whom audiences can easily relate to. I have complete confidence in Radio clicking with the audiences."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 27 Nov 2009 | 10:49 am Aamir packs vada pavsDuring a film promotion recently, Aamir didn’t think twice before stepping out and getting a few vada pavs packed for the day ahead.Source: | 27 Nov 2009 | 10:41 am Vivek’s getting the bluesAkhabru from the unit of RGV’s Rakta Charitra tells me that Vivek Oberoi is getting the blues. Farhan Akhtar is delighted to have Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol as his co-stars in Zoya Akhtar's new film.
"Having two friends like Hrithik and Abhay Deol to do this male bonding film with me is a blessing. Abhay, I've known from the time he stepped into my role in Reema Kagti's Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. I get along famously with both of them. So shooting this male-bonding film with Hrithik and Abhay in Spain should be loads of fun."
Continues Farhan, "Hrithik has been a true friend from the start. He not only did that cameo in Zoya's Luck By Chance, he also agreed to accommodate Zoya's new film. I start directing Don 2 from September 2010. And Zoya's film had to be completed before that. Hrithik adjusted his dates accordingly.
Male bonding has always been a strong theme in Farhan's career as a director and actor.
"That's true," admits Farhan. "But no one will say Zoya's film with Hrithik, Abhay and me is in any way similar to my Dil Chahta Hai or to Rock On. Zoya's is a different zone of male bonding. I've done just one scene with Hrithik in Zoya's Luck By Chance. Now I've a chance to do a whole film with him. Both Hrithik and Abhay are actors I admire greatly."

Sammir Dattani seems to be on a high these days, ask him why and he says
"It's this buzz in the air!"
And once he starts speaking you can almost feel that 'buzz' too because he just can't stop talking. There are many reason for his excitement, firstly is the Dubai Film Festival he will be going for.
Says Sammir, "Right now I'm looking forward to going to Dubai for the Film Festival on December 9 where Mr. Shyam Benegal's Well Done Abba is being screened. To be part of a film by Shyam Babu is any actor's dream come true. The experience was fabulous the people were fabulous and I got chance to shoot with one of my favourite actors of all time, Boman Irani."
Well Done Abba is the second film to bring Sammir and Minissha Lamba together. "I had a guest appearance in Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate with Minissha. For Shyam Babu's film, we spent a lot more time together. Minissha is extremely sweet and genuine. But working with Shyam Babu? Now that's something else!"
That's not all; there is more reason to the excitement, which happens to be the shoot for Karan Johar's I Hate Love Stories with Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan. Speaking about the Karan Johar (Dharma) experience, Sammir says, "Yes the shoot in on full swing in Mumbai but all I'll say is, this is the most comfortable unit I've worked with since my debut with the Rajshri's Uff...Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai. The director Punit Malhotra knows exactly what he wants. And Sonam is loads of fun to work with. We are all pretty much a bunch of youngsters on the set having fun and working very hard at the same
time."
Sammir was constantly in and out of Mumbai as he'd been shooting in 3 cities. "Sometimes I wake up in the morning not knowing where I am. I was in Chennai shooting with Shreya Saran for a film. For this film we were travelling to and fro from Mumbai to Chennai to a place close to Vishakhapatnam where there was no airport. Then I had to rush to Jodhpur for a longish stint of Percept Pictures 8. Now I'm back in
Mumbai for IHLS."
He adds laughing, "You know what I can't sleep without unpacking my luggage no matter what time of the night I reach my destination. People around me think it's an OCD, but I say I'm just plain organized! Lately with my schedule each time, I unpack I wonder why I even try, because soon it's time to pack again. I think I'm going to
at least try to learn how to live out of a suitcase for a change!" As though waking up in a different city every other day was not enough, Sammir underwent a series of spooky experiences while shooting in a Fort in Jodhpur for Percept Pictures' supernatural
thriller 8.
"I don't know what it was; maybe it was the atmosphere of the place or just the atmosphere on set that I carried with me to my room. But I'd constantly feel a presence in my room and caught myself scanning the room a number of times just to make sure it was just me there. I'm not superstitious but when I heard one of the king's dancers had died in that room, I demanded a change."
"I know every other place from forts to schools have such legends, but if am working on a horror film I'm not carrying a part of it back with me just in case the dancer girl decides to haunt me for life, just because I decided to share her room," laughs Sammir.Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 27 Nov 2009 | 8:46 am No DTH premiere for Hook Ya Crook: David DhawanDirector David Dhawan dismisses as "baseless" media reports that his film Hook Ya Crook won't release in theatres but would instead arrive directly on DTH. The December issue of Vogue India sees a striking Kareena Kapoor all in white, with signature kohl lined eyes looking more than just beautiful, pretty or sensuous, in fact she looks confident, enthralling and a complete superstar. It's what's behind the picture that makes this Kareena Kapoor cover page special than the one she did before with Vogue. The editor herself says, "When Kareena did her first Vogue cover with us; she was coming into her own and was clearly on the cusp of stardom. But the Kareena on the cover of our December issue is a full blown star - a more confident and grown up version of that girl before. Whether she is modelling the season's most glamorous party dresses or making candid confessions on her life's essentials, she does it with a spontaneity and spirit that is as beguiling as dazzling."
In conversation with Vogue, Kareena shares her love for food, Saif and her family. If you're wondering what's different, here's an excerpt to give you the drift, talking about Saif and herself, Kareena said, "Saif and I are mirror images. Like me, he's a bit eccentric. We are very similar and that works for us. Of course, if both of us are in a bad mood, then I have to be the mature one, even though he is 10 years older. I think that's a woman thing. That's why we are so special." Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif share blockbuster chemistry in the De Dana Dan steamy number 'Gale Lag Ja'. But for all
the eager fans hoping to soak-in the fireworks, there's a twist in the tale. "I am keeping the song away for a little time. It will come in the theatres maybe after three or four days. It's my bonus," says director Priyadarshan who is very confident that the film will strike Platinum at the Box Office.
De Dana Dan is a very important film for Akshay considering that his last four releases of the year, Chandni Chowk To China, Tasveer 8X10, Kambakkht Ishq and Blue have failed to add luster to his career. But the positive reports carried by De Dana Dan may just help him end the year on a high. "I believe I'm a part of Akshay's success. And I strongly believe that he has always stood with me and I've paid him back. This time also I'm 100% sure that I'll pay him back. I have had only one actor like him in my life and that is Mohanlal. He never asked me any time what are you doing with me. He never even asked me what the story of the film was. When someone trusts you like that then you have to pay it back. I have tried hard to do that and I hope God will be with me," says Priyadarshan.

De Dana Dan releases today and Akshay Kumar is happy to talk about a variety of topics revolving around him, his work and his personal life. Whether it is his superstar status, underperformance of Blue, friends in the industry, the games people play, the Friday suspense, diplomatic stands, detractors - Akshay talks about all of this and a lot more in a candid conversation with Joginder Tuteja.
Even though Blue and Kambakkht Ishq took a very good opening, there have been questions around your superstar status. Doesn't that bother you?
There will always be questions around my 'Super Star' status. This honour/ label doesn't come with a box of marshmallows and a trophy; this label comes with a few slaps from some rotten fish and a dead mouse in your bed nearly every Friday.
Talking about opening, Blue took a very good start when it released this Diwali. In fact it was one of the best ever. However, by your own high standards, it underperformed. Have you tried analyzing the reason?
Oh, I could analyze the movie until the cows come home. No movie is perfect, even the best ones for that matter. I know what could have been better and I know what to work on but as of now, that's between the director and his actor. To my high standards it was Bollywood's best attempt at an underwater adventure and no one can take that away from the film. The rest, I agree, is questionable, but that entirely depends upon whether you are the type to walk into a theatre and rip movies apart for the sake of it. Or whether you just like to enjoy good cinema!
Meanwhile, you don't seem to be having too many friends in the industry though. It seems like they are waiting for a movie of yours to crash so that they can attack you. Any thoughts?
Let's be cognizant of the fact that no one is anybody's friend in this industry. It's impossible actually, and everyone knows it. People befriend people to get somewhere in life. This is not a dig, it's purely human nature. "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine, now come over for dinner while I charm you and your wife" - this is how every industry works.
Source: BollywoodHungama.com Features | 27 Nov 2009 | 3:14 am Aamir Khan takes one year break, won't sign any films
It looks like it will be another year at least after 3 Idiots and his own home productions Dhobi Ghat and Delhi Belly before Aamir Khan will sign another new film.
Since the release of Ghajini in December 2008, Aamir has not signed on the dotted line for any project. In fact Aamir had decided to take one full year off after Ghajini to rejuvenate himself. After the tough physical and emotional preparation for Ghajini, Aamir just wanted to relax and spend time with his wife and children.
That's precisely what he has done for the last one year. But now Aamir would be taking one more year off. This next one year would be devoted to putting his three home productions in order.
Says a source, "Aamir had earlier decided to take one year off. But now he has decided to extend his sabbatical by one more year. Filmmakers who have approached him with projects have been told that Aamir intends to take approximately one more year to supervise the post-production and final look of the three films that he has produced in 2009, namely Abhinay Deo's Delhi Belly, Anushka Rizvi's The Falling and Aamir's wife Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat."
Aamir feels, all three projects need serious fine-tuning and have been delayed because he has been busy finishing and promoting 3 Idiots.
Says the source, "The only way Aamir feels his three productions can be completed and released in 2010 is if he sets aside all his own acting assignments to look into them. So he isn't signing any films in 2010 either."
Says the source, "It requires guts to say no to the best roles going around in Bollywood, and at a reported fee of approximately Rs 30 crores per film. But Aamir suffers no security pangs about not signing films. He told a friend he will work at his own pace, no matter what the temptation or provocation to take on extra work may be."Source: BollywoodHungama.com News | 27 Nov 2009 | 3:04 am
