"It's a wrong perception that my films are delayed" - Raj Kumar Santoshi [Part 2]

Rajkumar Santoshi Weekend collections of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani are out and it is crystal clear that Raj Kumar Santoshi is all set to have the biggest ever money spinner of his two decade long career. Not just that, even Ranbir Kapoor is enjoying the biggest opening ever of his career with the movie continuing its record journey. In the concluding segment of this 2-part interview with Joginder Tuteja, a relieved Raj Kumar Santoshi reacts to the digs taken on him by other filmmakers, delay in completion of his films, failure of Family and Halla Bol and how he is quite sure that Ranbir and Katrina are sure shot superstars just round the corner. Even though you are sticking by your ethics and passion and are one of the select senior film makers who are still around, doesn't it hurt that there are digs being taken on the pace at which you complete your films? At times it appears to be harmless fun but sometimes, it is also a little below the belt. Don't you feel like retaliating? I am glad you asked this question. Though I won't wish to retaliate per se but I definitely to want state some bare facts on the records to bring a turnaround in perception of few who feel/believe/speculate/assume that I take time in completing my films. If we go down the memory lane, one of my biggest and most ambitious films till date, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, took mere 120 days from the first day of the shoot till the release date. This included actual shooting, post production, marketing, promotion and release. Tell me how many big films like this have been completed in such speed. Moreover, my involvement with a project doesn't just end at the sets of the film. I know of so many out there who steer clear of a film once they are through the principal shooting. However, I am thoroughly involved in the background score, editing, mixing etc. The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, took mere 120 days from the first day of the shoot till the release date But isn't The Legend of Bhagat Singh an isolated example of a film being completed so fast? I can give you a lot more examples. Khakee was completed in 8 months even though Aishwarya Rai had met with an accident during the shoot. Also, there were other superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn as the part of the cast. Still, there were no delays. On the other hand, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, in spite of busy youngsters like Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, was completed in 8 months flat. Sometimes there is a gap between making two films which gives people an impression that a movie is taking a lot of time to be completed. However, the actors with whom I have worked over the years know that I shoot fast and finish the films on time. It's unfortunate that there is such a wrong perception around my films getting delayed. I am happy that other than great looks, Katrina also has an inherent quality of being a good and honest human being that reflects in her performance Have you ever looked back on the box office failure of Family - Ties of Blood and Halla Bol? Whenever I look back, I become surer that poor marketing killed these films. In today's times something like that is so important for your film to make it's presence amongst in the audience. People make choices based on what is made available to them. Neither Family nor Halla Bol reached out to audiences. Moreover, in case of Family, Amitabh Bachchan had fallen ill before it's release and hence there was a lot of uncertainty around the film's release. Moreover, no one was in the right frame of mind to talk about the film. What is ironical though is that till date I get compliments from people who watch it on satellite or DVDs. These films were far better than the rubbish which is churned out today. Rajkumar Santoshi Well, the story telling of your latest release was indeed comical. However, it must have required quite some thinking on your part to rope in someone like Katrina Kaif in a role like this, right? After all before New York, she was being billed as just Ms. Beautiful. I know her for last 2.5 years and have closely followed her progress as an actor, star and a professional. I had been hearing stories about her sincerity, discipline, punctuality and hard work. I saw it all for myself when she was roped in for the film. She was quite enthusiastic about the subject even though it required her to do something that she has never attempted before. Not many actors can carry off a role like this with élan but she did that. I am glad that my judgement paid off. She was very convinced herself that she could crack it well. I am happy that other than great looks, she also has an inherent quality of being a good and honest human being that reflects in her performance. Ranbir too has given an altogether different account of himself... It was such a pleasant experience to be directing this young boy; He too hadn't done anything like this before. Years back, I had enjoyed so much working with Rishiji in Damini. I still believe that the industry hasn't given him his due. Now Ranbir has played a role so well which required him to come up with an all around performance where he was required to display a wide variety of emotions. He is a definite star on way to be a superstar. Ranbir is a definite star on way to be a superstar There has been a considerable gap between Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani and your last release Halla Bol [Jan 2008]. Will there be an equally large time span before your next film arrives? That should not be the case (laughs). I was just waiting for the response to Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani. Now I can start putting together my next film in place which is pretty much in the pipeline.

"I would've done the love making scene even if Saif wasn't there in Kurbaan" - Kareena Kapoor

Click above for more movie stills She is known as 'Size Zero' of the Indian Film Industry. So we decided, let's just call her 'Half a Bagel'. She is slim, sleek and sexy. Kareena Kapoor is taking Bollywood by storm since a year, and taking the paparazzi by frenzy whenever she is spotted with boyfriend and actor Saif Ali Khan. Off screen, Kareena, popularly known as Bebo in Bollywood, exudes a smaller-than-life, self deprecating persona. She always looks hopeful about her future, whether it's family, films or Saif Ali Khan. She is unique. She has the sort of untouchable star quality about her. In person, she is quite remarkably beautiful and lean. So lean that she seems almost to be a trick of perspective. The directors she's worked with routinely comment on her flexibility. The actors comment on her dedication and passion for films and her boyfriend comments, ''She is very adaptable to the different worlds our directors create for her.'' Such is the respect this actress gets delivered. Since her new life with beau Saif has begun, and she is carefully selecting the right scripts coming her way, Kareena Kapoor has blossomed into the most talented and versatile actress of her generation. She is so real that she doesn't even hesitate to say, ''Why don't journalists ever ask Charlize Theron or Halle Berry, why they do a love making scene in a movie? Why is it always have to be us?'' when asked her about the intense love making scene with Saif Ali Khan in Kurbaan. Now that's what we respect about this bold Indian woman. But the lady doesn't stop there. ''When a viewer sees Kurbaan, they're not going to go back with just the kiss'', she adds. On her way to the Heathrow airport to catch her flight to Dubai, where both, 'Saifeena' (that's their new combined name) are busy promoting Kurbaan, Devansh Patel gets lucky to be talking to the Indian phenomenon at the right place at the right time - the phenomenal princess Kareena Kapoor. By the way, the time I spoke to her was half past midnight. The promos of Kurbaan reminds us a lot of your elder sister Karisma in Fiza. How intense can you get as an actress? Well, Kurbaan is an intense film, its cutting edge and gripping too. Kurbaan is a new wave of cinema that's coming along. All our characters are intense; it's not just only me. Yes, my role of Avantika is the most powerful. So, you'll be surprised with our strong cast when the film hits the theatres. Kurbaan I hope our sweet London journos haven't been asking you the same cliched questions, have they? You know what? Everybody has been asking me more or less the same questions (laughs). So I hope you ain't going to make this one cliche like your London colleagues. So how complex is Avantika, the role you play, in the film? Avantika is a simple girl. She maintains her integrity very well in the film but is being used as a pawn in a huge game being played around by the terrorists. We've tried to keep Avantika real and at the same time, commercial. The role isn't a documentary types because let's not forget, it's a Karan Johar film. Kurbaan is a movie with a lot of repeat value. Kurbaan is a new wave of cinema that's coming along Films have a shelf life of three days now. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It's a hit or a flop. You'll be surprised that a lot of movies are declared a hit on a Friday itself. But sadly those movies are not really a hit. Today's all about perception and a lot about your PR. But some movies are going to do well even post Monday as well. Films like Love Aaj Kal, New York and Wake Up Sid have done well. The real test of films begins on the fourth day of their release that is a Monday. Unfortunately the media doesn't like to believe that. That's the test we all have to pass. Kurbaan falls under a category which has good music, good story, meaning, soul, good production house, good actors, etc. I'm sure and we hope it has a longer shelf life. You think KJo is drifting away from his usual rom-coms? Would you expect a Kurbaan coming from a Dharma Production? The whole idea is that when you are in a creative field, be it a producer, be it an actor, etc, we all have to experiment, we all have to discover and we all have to do different stuff. I don't think Karan Johar really wants to be a mediocre producer or a director. He has always pushed the envelope and he has always made great movies. If Karan doesn't do it than who else will? Kurbaan How did you react on Saif's quote stating that he sees a lot of Sharmila Tagore in you? That's a great compliment from Saif. Sharmila Tagore was one of the only actresses in Indian cinema to strike a balance between doing parallel cinema and doing a commercial entertainer. She has done Mausam and an Evening in Paris. I'd like to believe that I can also do an Omkara and a Kambakkht Ishq. I have constantly been doing roles in which I don't get type cast and I'm sure that the directors and the filmmakers know that now. Love making scene cannot get easier than this, can it? An off screen couple getting intimate on screen. Actually, to be honest with you, I would've done Kurbaan even if Saif wasn't there in the film. I would've stuck to the script which was given to me. I'm sure he would've done the same. So of course, this love making scene is a bit over hyped because we are an off screen couple. But I know one thing. When a viewer sees Kurbaan, they're not going to go back with just the kiss. The kiss isn't important. What's important is our message of the film. What's important are the thrilling moments in our film, etc. Why don't journalists ever ask Charlize Theron or Halle Berry why they do a love making scene in a movie. Why is it always have to be us? Our love making scene is done with aesthetically in a very classy manner. Sharmila Tagore was one of the only actresses in Indian cinema to strike a balance between doing parallel cinema and doing a commercial entertainer Let me see if you can get three out of three here in this quick rapid fire. Ok, let's play. I'm sure it'll be exciting Saif Ali Khan's first film as an actor? I think his first film was Parampara. You got the first one. Now what was Saif's name in Omkara? That's simple. Langda Tyagi That's two on two. Here's the big one. Saif's first film with Akshay Kumar? His first film with Akshay was Keemat I'm sorry to say but you get 2 out of 3. His first film was Yeh Dillagi Oh yes! Never mind. Better luck next time. What is Kurbaan? Kurbaan is a pain of intense emotions.

"My girlfriend cried throughout Jail" - Neil Nitin Mukesh

Neil Nitin Mukesh Neil Nitin Mukesh's love interest is no longer kept out of view. That the girl in question, Priyanka Bhatia, is very much part of the Mukesh parivar which became evident on the night of November 2 when at the Fame Adlabs at a private screening of Jail. Priyanka was prominently present alongside Neil's parents and brother Naman. Neil's mother and girlfriend sobbed uncontrollably throughout. "Priyanka and my mom were hysterical with grief. They weren't looking at just a character being put through a traumatic time. To them it was someone who they both love in pain in front of their eyes," said Neil. Neil admits Priyanka is an integral part of his family. "My parents and her parents don't only know and like one another, we also visit each another's homes constantly. More than lovers we're friends first. There's a comfort level in our interaction that makes us very relaxed with one another. We don't have to hide anything. We meet openly and are very proud of one another. There's no pressure for marriage on either side. When it happens, it happens. The marital status on the passport would hardly alter anything between us." Priyanka has done a course in fashion designing. Neil is open to the idea of Priyanka designing his clothes for his films. "I'd love that. But it should happen on its own. Neither Priyanka nor I want to pressurize anyone to use her skills. But if it happens, I'd be very happy to be dressed up by her." Another happy happening is the fact that Neil's colleague Ranbir Kapoor's film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani released on the same day as Neil's Jail. Says Neil, "Ranbir and I are of course competitors. But there's no negative rivalry between us. Our respective fathers would kill us if we behaved like two brats fighting for the same roles. I'm proud that Ranbir's and my grandfather were very close friends. My father and Ranbir's father adore each other. Ranbir is like my younger brother." So is Neil saying Ranbir is no competition? "Of course he is!" rejoins Neil. "I'd want Ranbir's film to do as well as mine. Fortunately, Jail and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani look like the North and South pole." Last week, all of Neil's forthcoming directors saw Jail at Yash Raj Studios "David Dhawan. Abbas-Mustan, Kunal Kohli and Ken Ghosh saw the film. I think they liked what they saw. So I'm safe in their films."

Imtiaz Ali to direct Ranbir?

Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor Ranbir Kapoor has arrived with a bang! First, WAKE UP SID made people notice his abilities as an actor and cultivated a strong fan-base for him. Now, the stupendous business of AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI has made people realize that Ranbir has it all to be the next superstar. In fact, Ranbir has joined the Premier Club, hobnobbing with SRK, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor, whose films have, consistently, opened very well at the ticket window. The latest news doing the rounds of the industry is, Imtiaz Ali, the celebrated director of JAB WE MET and LOVE AAJ KAL, has signed Ranbir for his next film, which will be produced by the Mehtas of Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision. "I am still deciding on the story of my next film," Imtiaz informs me, "Sure, I did meet Ranbir earlier. I met him recently too. 'Paa', 'Paa', 'Paa' everywhere

Amitabh Bachchan is an incredible actor. His body of work proves it. The actor continues to surprise you to this date. Yes, we're talking about his new film PAA. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that PAA is the first film, after GHAJINI, which has aroused such reactions from all quarters - the industrywalas as well as the paying public. The veteran actor's look is being widely discussed [and praised] by one and all. PAA has become a hot proposition overnight, soon after its very first promo was unveiled. The distributors are super-excited, the exhibitors are waiting to lay their hands on the film and the moviegoers are waiting with bated breath to watch the superstar transform into a kid. Not many are aware that the production reins of PAA have been handled by Abhishek Bachchan himself. "It was a great learning experience," he tells me. Abhishek seems to have learnt the ropes pretty fast, since the first thing he did, before the film went on floors, was to keep the economics of PAA in check. "Making an economically viable project is most important in today's times," Abhishek says. The film hasn't cost its makers a fancy amount, despite the presence of A-listers such as the Big B, Abhishek himself, Vidya Balan and Paresh Rawal. PAA is produced by AB Corp and Sunil Manchanda and directed by R. Balki.

"Run time of Radio is 2 hours and not 3" - Himesh Reshammiya

Click above for more movie stills On Monday morning, Himesh Reshammiya and others associated with Radio were in for a surprise. They woke up with a news break which declared that the running length of Radio was 3 hours. In the times when shorter movies are ruling the roost and anything above 2.5 hours is considered to be nothing less than sacrilege, it was but natural that a news item like this was a cause for worry. More so because it had no truth to it. Fumes Himesh, "This is figment of someone's imagination. Radio spans 1 hour 55 minutes, not 3 hours as a section of media is indicating. It is plain lie and malicious. I have no clue where did this come from." With the declaration coming from the horse's mouth, hope the rumour mongers would now have to think of something better. Directed by Ishaan Trivedi, Radio stars Sonal Sehgal and Shenaz Treasuryvala as the leading ladies. The film releases all over on 3rd December.

Rishi Kapoor honored by Russian Government for contribution to cinema

Rishi Kapoor Love story between Russia and Kapoor 'khandaan' has spread across generations. Decades back, Raj Kapoor was the most popular Bollywood celebrity in this part of the world. Now, it's the turn of veteran actor Rishi Kapoor who is being showered with this love and affection. He is currently in Russia where he is being honoured by the Government for his contribution to cinema. The highlight of the event would be the citation and diploma that Rishi Kapoor would receive for his efforts over the years. Confirms an elated Rishi Kapoor on the eve of his trip to Russia, "Obviously, I am quite happy with Russian Government recognizing me for my work over the years. It has been a long journey for me spread across four decades. An award like this only keeps the actor in me alive and kicking." A twin event that takes place on 9th and 10th November in Moscow and Vladikavkaz respectively, it has been put together in conjunction with a NGO called 'Routes 2 Roots'. It endeavours bringing together people, cultures and values across SAARC countries. It is as a part of this initiative that Rishi Kapoor has travelled to this part of the world. However, a trip over the weekend means that Rishi Kapoor missed out on the premier of his son Ranbir Kapoor's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. "Yes, I can't help it. The date for the event had been announced and I needed to fulfil my commitment. I would have loved to be a part of Ranbir's moment of glory. I will catch the film when I return a week later", says Rishi Kapoor. Meanwhile, his better half Neetu Singh has caught the film and is apparently quite happy with the final results. "I am sure by the time people are reading this; the verdict would anyways have been out", he smiles, "While I am quite positive about Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani due to its fun element, Neetu is very happy with what she saw. I am sure Ranbir fans would be happy to see him in a different light altogether after Wake Up Sid." Incidentally, Rishi Kapoor has earlier worked with Ajab Prem... director Raj Kumar Santoshi in Damini which had won critical as well as commercial acclaim. On his return, Rishi Kapoor would straight away head for Turkey where he has a shooting schedule planned for Hema Malini's Tell Me Oh Khuda. Directed by debutant Mayur Puri, the film is being touted as Esha Deol's comeback film and stars Rishi Kapoor in a principal role other than Arjan Bajwa and Vinod Khanna. "I am looking forward to working with Hemaji again", he says, "Though she doesn't star in the film, she would be there in the capacity of a producer. There would be a Turkish actress opposite me in the film." In 2010, Rishi Kapoor would also be seen in Raj Kanwar's Sadiyaan. He would soon be beginning work on Nikhil Advani's Patiala House where he would be seen with Akshay Kumar syet again after Namastey London.

Was Asin's role in London Dreams chopped off?

Vipul Shah Asin said no to Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan opposite Akshay Kumar because of the length of her role. Katrina happily bagged the role arguing she wanted to be part of the film because of her pairing with Akshay...and to be part of the lavish laughathon which promises to be one of the biggest hits of the year. Asin, on the other hand, chose to do London Dreams where it so turns out that her role is not that substantial after all (to put it mildly). There is shock and disbelief about the length and scope of Asin's role in London Dreams. After Ghajini where she dominated the show, Asin as a chorus singer of a grunge band in London Dreams seems a bit hard to swallow. Attempts to ask the actress if her role had been drastically downsized were met with a suspiciously stony silence from her. When Vipul Shah was contacted, he was characteristically forthright. "I've been hearing these stories about Asin's role been chopped off. If some people believe her role has been edited what can I do? The truth of the matter is, Asin knew the exact extent of her role and she loved it. She went into London Dreams with her eyes open. And she loved the scope of her role. But finally when she saw the way the role had turned out, maybe it didn't meet her expectations." Apparently, the disappointing length of Asin's second Hindi film has soured things between the actress and the director. Vipul vehemently denies this. "Asin and I are still friends we've met after the film's release. If she is disappointed by her role she hasn't told me anything." Curiously, all the news of Asin's presence in Ashutosh Gowariker's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se dried up after the acutely lukewarm response to her role and performance in London Dreams, leading to the speculation that perhaps the Ghajini spell had broken with the second film. Says a source from the industry, "Asin has been extremely picky so far. She has said no to offers like Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan and Farhan Akhtar's Kartik Calling Kartik. And now after London Dreams, she has no Hindi assignments on hand at the moment."

Irfan - The youngster who impressed Karan Johar with his songs

Irfan One look at him and he could very well pass off as a model. Speak to him and he comes across as a dude from the urban world with a MBA degree to boast of. Probe him a little and you realise that he is the same man whose 'Ali Maula' from Kurbaan is pretty much igniting the heat currently. Ask him about his background and you would be in for a shock as you realise that he is the same youngster who started off on a brilliant note with 'Aashayein' [Iqbal], only to follow that with half a dozen more tracks that led to Fashion. Songs like 'Mar Jawaan', 'Kuch Khaas' and 'Aashiyaan' boasted of some innovative writing that resulted in composer duo Salim-Sulaiman rooting for him and making attaching him to Karan Johar's Dharma Productions with films like Koochie Koochie Hota Hai and Kurbaan. Meet the man on the hot seat, 31 years old Irfan Siddiqui, who is in sight of hitting the big league, what confirmed projects featuring Jermaine Jackson and Adnan Sami's son Azaan Sami already in his kitty. Your 'Ali Maula' [Kurbaan] has already got quite some appreciation coming its way. A positive start? I might sound over the top but I always knew that this song will win everybody's heart. The melody of ''Ali Maula' is so soothing yet haunting and Salim's voice is magical. I really want to thank Karan, Rensil and Salim-Sulaiman for this. The lyrics of Ali Maula are a little difficult to understand but they trusted me on this and gave me the liberty. This song is very special and very close to my heart. I am delighted that it is getting the appreciation it deserves. Future seems pretty bright for you with an entry into the Dharma camp. Must be a great feeling and a challenging task in hand, right? It's an honour to mention my association with Dharma, UTV, T Series, Ken Ghosh, Adnan Sami, Madhur Bhandarkar, Nagesh Kukunoor and Hinduja's Teen Patti which stars Amitabh Bachchan. I feel on the top of the world when I mention these personalities. It's a blessing! You are also writing tracks for Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. How has it been wearing a different hat for a movie belonging to animation genre? This is an animated remake of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the movie that I have seen N number of times and I still know all the songs by heart. This was a tough one! The songs of this movie are legendary and to work around that was difficult but exciting. The lyrics had to be very young and easy without deviating from the essence of the story. It was fun and I hope the audiences love the songs. When Iqbal happened they offered me the song and you won't believe that we did this entire song on the phone Irfan, you have quite some database of work behind you. Really, how come we don't really hear much about you and your work in spite of such an impressive line up? Lyric writing is a profession which generally does not attract the attention of many unless you are very big. My songs are achieving the likings of people and I am glad that my journey has started. You and Salim-Sulaiman have been quite a team, as visible from number of chartbusters you have given in Fashion, 8X10 Tasveer and Iqbal amongst others. Do we see an even longer association happening here? Surely! I can assure you there are lots of chartbusters to come.... Do you wish to share information on how exactly did this partnership really take place? I started writing songs for choreographer Rajiv Goswami's album in 2005, who is a very close friend of mine. His songs were arranged by Salim-Sulaiman. This is how we met. Salim-Sulaiman use to always like my lyrics. So when Iqbal happened they offered me the song and you won't believe that we did this entire song on the phone. We directly met on the dubbing. This is the kind of tuning we have. We understand each other so well that things just sparked after Aashayein and we went on to do a lot of stuff together most of which made it big. I just love working with them. It's challenging to write western songs in Hindi and yet make it work You have also been doing non-film tracks with active presence in ICL, IPL and Walt Disney films. Are you looking at diversifying into various mediumswithout being constrained by Bollywood musical scores? It was an experience and it gives an opportunity to write songs which are completely different than film songs. Specifically High School Musical I & II and Camp Rock!! It's challenging to write western songs in Hindi and yet make it work. And on the top of that lip sync is another task. I love to diversify because I feel it helps you learn. Irfan Irfan, how has been the journey for an MBA like you to be finding a place for yourself in Bollywood? It has been fantastic! I never planned to be here in my preliminary days but I had the zeal in me to try different things. I have done few fashion shows, I did my MBA, I have my own business but writing was always a passion for me. And I am thankful to God that my passion is now my profession as well. With distinct assignments like Teen Patti and Chance Pe Dance, it must be quite some exciting times ahead for you? Teen Patti and Chance Pe Dance are two completely different tangents and that's what I love to do. I believe if you are a writer you should be capable of writing any song. Both these films have some beautiful songs but the treatment is completely different. Chance Pe Dance is more young, peppy and fun whereas Teen Patti is more serious and mature. It zeroes down to the language and the word selection. Chance Pe Dance is more young, peppy and fun whereas Teen Patti is more serious and mature You seem to have been entrusted with the responsibility of launching Azaan Sami's career. A huge burden? Burden? I feel it's a responsibility! Azaan is as multi talented as his father and I am glad that I am doing Adnan's as well as Azaan's album, which are again two completely different jobs. It's great and I am enjoying it! Can you elaborate on your association with Jermaine Jackson? Jermaine's song happened because of Adnan and T Series. As I was writing Adnan's album this song was also entrusted to me. The interesting part is that I have also written Jermaine's lines which are mostly in English, something that I have not done before largely. The even more interesting part is that Jermaine sang couple of lines in Hindi as well. Jermaine's song happened because of Adnan and T Series Any filmmakers that you are looking forward to work with in future? Honestly speaking I have worked with great directors till date but the quest for more will always be there. I really want to work with everybody because I think it's a process that makes you learn and your journey to success ends when you stop learning.

Shahid Kapoor makes Ahmed Khan's kids happy

Shahid Kapoor Choreographer Ahmed Khan is back from the US after months' of shooting for a song with his best-friend Shahid Kapoor. And Ahmed just can't stop singing his star-pal's praises, for the generosity Shahid showed in the US. The actor actually made sure Ahmed Khan's kids got a long-cherished dream to come true. Says Ahmed fondly, ''I had been promising my two sons Azaan and Subhan a trip to Disneyland for months. Earlier when we shot in the US for another Yash Raj Film Bachna Ae Haseeno, I kept hoping there would be time. But I couldn't manage to get away. But this time, Shahid made sure it happened.'' Apparently, Shahid not only ensured that Ahmed wrapped up his work as quickly as possible, he made all the arrangements for Ahmed, his wife Saira and two sons to take off for Disneyland. ''And why not?'' says Ahmed defensively. ''Shahid and I are childhood friends. Before my mother held my sons Shahid took them in his arms. So it's perfectly natural for him to look out for me and my family.'' Recalling the fabulous experience, Ahmed says, ''Out of the one month I spent in the US, only 12 days were devoted to shooting the song. It wasn't even a dance song. It was a concept number showing the hero and his friends splurging and binging all over the US. We shot at casinos and at various pleasure and tourist spots in Philadelphia, Orlando, New York, New Jersey and Chicago.'' Shahid will now be seen in Ahmed Khan's Paathshala. ''In a 2-hour long film, Shahid is there for an hour. So he's there for 55 minutes. His role is like Aamir Khan's in Taare Zameen Par. He comes in mid-way and yes, he's the teacher. Both Shahid and I have decided to focus on the kids in the marketing rather than on Shahid.''

"I don't want audiences to leave any organs home" - Raj Kumar Santoshi [Part 1]

Rajkumar Santoshi After speaking to Raj Kumar Santoshi, one can be rest assured that his zany sense of humour is not restricted to the characters that he brings on screen. He may state amusing things with a dead pan expression but scratch the surface and you would realise that the man has quite a few valid points to make. One such point is around the entire mentality of filmmakers from the current generation who have a ready 'excuse' of leaving their brains at home when walking in for a film. In a holds-no-bar two part conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Raj Kumar Santoshi challenges this new way of presenting films before the audiences and wonders if this trend would make him corrupt as well in years to come. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has opened to a huge response all over. Some smart marketing and pitching worked in it's favour? See, we were very clear from the very beginning that this wasn't an over the top comedy that we were offering. Also, unlike so many filmmakers out there, we were never apologetic in telling audience what our film was all about. We never urged our audiences to leave their brains at home. Why should they? Shouldn't films allow audiences to use some parts of their brains at least? Why should that be the case? This is why I never wanted my audiences to leave their brains behind. Please bring all your organs with you in the theatre; don't leave anything behind. We never urged our audiences to leave their brains at home. Why should they? But in the trend of some out and out slapstick comedies or action thrillers, makers do make declarations for audiences to leave their brains behind. This reflects on their confidence level. Maybe they themselves aren't confident of what they have made. Even slapstick requires some intelligence when it is being made. Have you ever heard Walt Disney stating something like 'please leave your brains behind' before the release of their films? You have been in the industry for a couple of decades now and have seen changing trends. It is nice to see you bouncing back in a big way with Ajab Prem... However, how do you look at the entire filmmaking process and the economics involved today? Frankly, I am disturbed. Today, people are making films just for 3 days. 'Bas opening lag jaaye picture ki...' is the kind of statement which is heard ever so often. They don't care whether they have made a good or a bad film; all they care for is if the moolah has been recovered in the opening weekend or not. Once they are done with the film, they don't even care about it after it's release. They just move on. There is just no sense of ownership any more. Where has the entire passion gone? All passion seems to be reserved now towards giving a stylish look to the film and promoting it to the hilt so that box office numbers come up fast. Quality has taken a back seat and quantity is on the fore front today. By hook or by crook, it's just the opening that seems to be mattering for most. That's not filmmaking for sure. Today, people are making films just for 3 days. 'Bas opening lag jaaye picture ki...' But money does talk at the end of the day? What money are we talking about? Within an opening weekend of the film's release, we see huge declarations being made. 'This movie has made 60 crores, 80 crores, 100 crores in 3 days flat'. Kahan se number aaye ye saare? And then this entire figure occupies more than 90% of the film's poster with the name of the film relegated somewhere at the bottom. Filmmakers feel that at the end of the day, history will remember the number, not the film. If this is the way a film should look, i.e. only a box office number, then I am afraid it is not a healthy trend. Rajkumar Santoshi Today, your own film Ajab Prem... is expected to project huge numbers too due to it's massive opening... I am glad that has happened. I made the film with the right intent and went by my instinct. I wasn't following a formula here. Everything just fitted in perfectly for Ajab Prem..., right from getting the right producers like TIPS who have done such a fabulous job in marketing films like Race and Kismat Konnection or getting such a fantastic musical score by Pritam or having the best young actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif on board. I am ecstatic with the film's success because I now won't have to follow the trend of other filmmakers; I would be able to conceive a film and make it the way I want to without compromising on my core ethics. So dabbling in varied genres would continue for Raj Kumar Santoshi? Definitely. I have always told stories that I have felt like telling at any point of time without worrying about trends. Ghayal and Damini were action and drama flicks at the very beginning of my career. Andaz Apna Apna which is so much considered to be a cult classic decade and a half down the line, was a comedy where I shifted gears. Ghatak was an emotional action film. Pukar was an espionage thriller. Khakee had a lot of drama to it. Lajja was about women power. Halla Bol was revolutionary. Today, Ajab Prem... is a comedy. Tomorrow, I may make an entirely different film. That's the way I have been. Come back tomorrow for Part 2 of the conversation where Raj Kumar Santoshi reacts on digs taken on him by other filmmakers, delay in completion of his films, failure of Family and Halla Bol and how he is quite sure that Ranbir and Katrina are sure shot superstars just round the corner.
