Rishi Kapoor honored by Russian Government for contribution to cinema

Rishi Kapoor Love story between Russia and Kapoor 'khandaan' has spread across generations. Decades back, Raj Kapoor was the most popular Bollywood celebrity in this part of the world. Now, it's the turn of veteran actor Rishi Kapoor who is being showered with this love and affection. He is currently in Russia where he is being honoured by the Government for his contribution to cinema. The highlight of the event would be the citation and diploma that Rishi Kapoor would receive for his efforts over the years. Confirms an elated Rishi Kapoor on the eve of his trip to Russia, "Obviously, I am quite happy with Russian Government recognizing me for my work over the years. It has been a long journey for me spread across four decades. An award like this only keeps the actor in me alive and kicking." A twin event that takes place on 9th and 10th November in Moscow and Vladikavkaz respectively, it has been put together in conjunction with a NGO called 'Routes 2 Roots'. It endeavours bringing together people, cultures and values across SAARC countries. It is as a part of this initiative that Rishi Kapoor has travelled to this part of the world. However, a trip over the weekend means that Rishi Kapoor missed out on the premier of his son Ranbir Kapoor's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. "Yes, I can't help it. The date for the event had been announced and I needed to fulfil my commitment. I would have loved to be a part of Ranbir's moment of glory. I will catch the film when I return a week later", says Rishi Kapoor. Meanwhile, his better half Neetu Singh has caught the film and is apparently quite happy with the final results. "I am sure by the time people are reading this; the verdict would anyways have been out", he smiles, "While I am quite positive about Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani due to its fun element, Neetu is very happy with what she saw. I am sure Ranbir fans would be happy to see him in a different light altogether after Wake Up Sid." Incidentally, Rishi Kapoor has earlier worked with Ajab Prem... director Raj Kumar Santoshi in Damini which had won critical as well as commercial acclaim. On his return, Rishi Kapoor would straight away head for Turkey where he has a shooting schedule planned for Hema Malini's Tell Me Oh Khuda. Directed by debutant Mayur Puri, the film is being touted as Esha Deol's comeback film and stars Rishi Kapoor in a principal role other than Arjan Bajwa and Vinod Khanna. "I am looking forward to working with Hemaji again", he says, "Though she doesn't star in the film, she would be there in the capacity of a producer. There would be a Turkish actress opposite me in the film." In 2010, Rishi Kapoor would also be seen in Raj Kanwar's Sadiyaan. He would soon be beginning work on Nikhil Advani's Patiala House where he would be seen with Akshay Kumar syet again after Namastey London.

Was Asin's role in London Dreams chopped off?

Vipul Shah Asin said no to Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan opposite Akshay Kumar because of the length of her role. Katrina happily bagged the role arguing she wanted to be part of the film because of her pairing with Akshay...and to be part of the lavish laughathon which promises to be one of the biggest hits of the year. Asin, on the other hand, chose to do London Dreams where it so turns out that her role is not that substantial after all (to put it mildly). There is shock and disbelief about the length and scope of Asin's role in London Dreams. After Ghajini where she dominated the show, Asin as a chorus singer of a grunge band in London Dreams seems a bit hard to swallow. Attempts to ask the actress if her role had been drastically downsized were met with a suspiciously stony silence from her. When Vipul Shah was contacted, he was characteristically forthright. "I've been hearing these stories about Asin's role been chopped off. If some people believe her role has been edited what can I do? The truth of the matter is, Asin knew the exact extent of her role and she loved it. She went into London Dreams with her eyes open. And she loved the scope of her role. But finally when she saw the way the role had turned out, maybe it didn't meet her expectations." Apparently, the disappointing length of Asin's second Hindi film has soured things between the actress and the director. Vipul vehemently denies this. "Asin and I are still friends we've met after the film's release. If she is disappointed by her role she hasn't told me anything." Curiously, all the news of Asin's presence in Ashutosh Gowariker's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se dried up after the acutely lukewarm response to her role and performance in London Dreams, leading to the speculation that perhaps the Ghajini spell had broken with the second film. Says a source from the industry, "Asin has been extremely picky so far. She has said no to offers like Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan and Farhan Akhtar's Kartik Calling Kartik. And now after London Dreams, she has no Hindi assignments on hand at the moment."

Irfan - The youngster who impressed Karan Johar with his songs

Irfan One look at him and he could very well pass off as a model. Speak to him and he comes across as a dude from the urban world with a MBA degree to boast of. Probe him a little and you realise that he is the same man whose 'Ali Maula' from Kurbaan is pretty much igniting the heat currently. Ask him about his background and you would be in for a shock as you realise that he is the same youngster who started off on a brilliant note with 'Aashayein' [Iqbal], only to follow that with half a dozen more tracks that led to Fashion. Songs like 'Mar Jawaan', 'Kuch Khaas' and 'Aashiyaan' boasted of some innovative writing that resulted in composer duo Salim-Sulaiman rooting for him and making attaching him to Karan Johar's Dharma Productions with films like Koochie Koochie Hota Hai and Kurbaan. Meet the man on the hot seat, 31 years old Irfan Siddiqui, who is in sight of hitting the big league, what confirmed projects featuring Jermaine Jackson and Adnan Sami's son Azaan Sami already in his kitty. Your 'Ali Maula' [Kurbaan] has already got quite some appreciation coming its way. A positive start? I might sound over the top but I always knew that this song will win everybody's heart. The melody of ''Ali Maula' is so soothing yet haunting and Salim's voice is magical. I really want to thank Karan, Rensil and Salim-Sulaiman for this. The lyrics of Ali Maula are a little difficult to understand but they trusted me on this and gave me the liberty. This song is very special and very close to my heart. I am delighted that it is getting the appreciation it deserves. Future seems pretty bright for you with an entry into the Dharma camp. Must be a great feeling and a challenging task in hand, right? It's an honour to mention my association with Dharma, UTV, T Series, Ken Ghosh, Adnan Sami, Madhur Bhandarkar, Nagesh Kukunoor and Hinduja's Teen Patti which stars Amitabh Bachchan. I feel on the top of the world when I mention these personalities. It's a blessing! You are also writing tracks for Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. How has it been wearing a different hat for a movie belonging to animation genre? This is an animated remake of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the movie that I have seen N number of times and I still know all the songs by heart. This was a tough one! The songs of this movie are legendary and to work around that was difficult but exciting. The lyrics had to be very young and easy without deviating from the essence of the story. It was fun and I hope the audiences love the songs. When Iqbal happened they offered me the song and you won't believe that we did this entire song on the phone Irfan, you have quite some database of work behind you. Really, how come we don't really hear much about you and your work in spite of such an impressive line up? Lyric writing is a profession which generally does not attract the attention of many unless you are very big. My songs are achieving the likings of people and I am glad that my journey has started. You and Salim-Sulaiman have been quite a team, as visible from number of chartbusters you have given in Fashion, 8X10 Tasveer and Iqbal amongst others. Do we see an even longer association happening here? Surely! I can assure you there are lots of chartbusters to come.... Do you wish to share information on how exactly did this partnership really take place? I started writing songs for choreographer Rajiv Goswami's album in 2005, who is a very close friend of mine. His songs were arranged by Salim-Sulaiman. This is how we met. Salim-Sulaiman use to always like my lyrics. So when Iqbal happened they offered me the song and you won't believe that we did this entire song on the phone. We directly met on the dubbing. This is the kind of tuning we have. We understand each other so well that things just sparked after Aashayein and we went on to do a lot of stuff together most of which made it big. I just love working with them. It's challenging to write western songs in Hindi and yet make it work You have also been doing non-film tracks with active presence in ICL, IPL and Walt Disney films. Are you looking at diversifying into various mediumswithout being constrained by Bollywood musical scores? It was an experience and it gives an opportunity to write songs which are completely different than film songs. Specifically High School Musical I & II and Camp Rock!! It's challenging to write western songs in Hindi and yet make it work. And on the top of that lip sync is another task. I love to diversify because I feel it helps you learn. Irfan Irfan, how has been the journey for an MBA like you to be finding a place for yourself in Bollywood? It has been fantastic! I never planned to be here in my preliminary days but I had the zeal in me to try different things. I have done few fashion shows, I did my MBA, I have my own business but writing was always a passion for me. And I am thankful to God that my passion is now my profession as well. With distinct assignments like Teen Patti and Chance Pe Dance, it must be quite some exciting times ahead for you? Teen Patti and Chance Pe Dance are two completely different tangents and that's what I love to do. I believe if you are a writer you should be capable of writing any song. Both these films have some beautiful songs but the treatment is completely different. Chance Pe Dance is more young, peppy and fun whereas Teen Patti is more serious and mature. It zeroes down to the language and the word selection. Chance Pe Dance is more young, peppy and fun whereas Teen Patti is more serious and mature You seem to have been entrusted with the responsibility of launching Azaan Sami's career. A huge burden? Burden? I feel it's a responsibility! Azaan is as multi talented as his father and I am glad that I am doing Adnan's as well as Azaan's album, which are again two completely different jobs. It's great and I am enjoying it! Can you elaborate on your association with Jermaine Jackson? Jermaine's song happened because of Adnan and T Series. As I was writing Adnan's album this song was also entrusted to me. The interesting part is that I have also written Jermaine's lines which are mostly in English, something that I have not done before largely. The even more interesting part is that Jermaine sang couple of lines in Hindi as well. Jermaine's song happened because of Adnan and T Series Any filmmakers that you are looking forward to work with in future? Honestly speaking I have worked with great directors till date but the quest for more will always be there. I really want to work with everybody because I think it's a process that makes you learn and your journey to success ends when you stop learning.

Shahid Kapoor makes Ahmed Khan's kids happy

Shahid Kapoor Choreographer Ahmed Khan is back from the US after months' of shooting for a song with his best-friend Shahid Kapoor. And Ahmed just can't stop singing his star-pal's praises, for the generosity Shahid showed in the US. The actor actually made sure Ahmed Khan's kids got a long-cherished dream to come true. Says Ahmed fondly, ''I had been promising my two sons Azaan and Subhan a trip to Disneyland for months. Earlier when we shot in the US for another Yash Raj Film Bachna Ae Haseeno, I kept hoping there would be time. But I couldn't manage to get away. But this time, Shahid made sure it happened.'' Apparently, Shahid not only ensured that Ahmed wrapped up his work as quickly as possible, he made all the arrangements for Ahmed, his wife Saira and two sons to take off for Disneyland. ''And why not?'' says Ahmed defensively. ''Shahid and I are childhood friends. Before my mother held my sons Shahid took them in his arms. So it's perfectly natural for him to look out for me and my family.'' Recalling the fabulous experience, Ahmed says, ''Out of the one month I spent in the US, only 12 days were devoted to shooting the song. It wasn't even a dance song. It was a concept number showing the hero and his friends splurging and binging all over the US. We shot at casinos and at various pleasure and tourist spots in Philadelphia, Orlando, New York, New Jersey and Chicago.'' Shahid will now be seen in Ahmed Khan's Paathshala. ''In a 2-hour long film, Shahid is there for an hour. So he's there for 55 minutes. His role is like Aamir Khan's in Taare Zameen Par. He comes in mid-way and yes, he's the teacher. Both Shahid and I have decided to focus on the kids in the marketing rather than on Shahid.''

"I don't want audiences to leave any organs home" - Raj Kumar Santoshi [Part 1]

Rajkumar Santoshi After speaking to Raj Kumar Santoshi, one can be rest assured that his zany sense of humour is not restricted to the characters that he brings on screen. He may state amusing things with a dead pan expression but scratch the surface and you would realise that the man has quite a few valid points to make. One such point is around the entire mentality of filmmakers from the current generation who have a ready 'excuse' of leaving their brains at home when walking in for a film. In a holds-no-bar two part conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Raj Kumar Santoshi challenges this new way of presenting films before the audiences and wonders if this trend would make him corrupt as well in years to come. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has opened to a huge response all over. Some smart marketing and pitching worked in it's favour? See, we were very clear from the very beginning that this wasn't an over the top comedy that we were offering. Also, unlike so many filmmakers out there, we were never apologetic in telling audience what our film was all about. We never urged our audiences to leave their brains at home. Why should they? Shouldn't films allow audiences to use some parts of their brains at least? Why should that be the case? This is why I never wanted my audiences to leave their brains behind. Please bring all your organs with you in the theatre; don't leave anything behind. We never urged our audiences to leave their brains at home. Why should they? But in the trend of some out and out slapstick comedies or action thrillers, makers do make declarations for audiences to leave their brains behind. This reflects on their confidence level. Maybe they themselves aren't confident of what they have made. Even slapstick requires some intelligence when it is being made. Have you ever heard Walt Disney stating something like 'please leave your brains behind' before the release of their films? You have been in the industry for a couple of decades now and have seen changing trends. It is nice to see you bouncing back in a big way with Ajab Prem... However, how do you look at the entire filmmaking process and the economics involved today? Frankly, I am disturbed. Today, people are making films just for 3 days. 'Bas opening lag jaaye picture ki...' is the kind of statement which is heard ever so often. They don't care whether they have made a good or a bad film; all they care for is if the moolah has been recovered in the opening weekend or not. Once they are done with the film, they don't even care about it after it's release. They just move on. There is just no sense of ownership any more. Where has the entire passion gone? All passion seems to be reserved now towards giving a stylish look to the film and promoting it to the hilt so that box office numbers come up fast. Quality has taken a back seat and quantity is on the fore front today. By hook or by crook, it's just the opening that seems to be mattering for most. That's not filmmaking for sure. Today, people are making films just for 3 days. 'Bas opening lag jaaye picture ki...' But money does talk at the end of the day? What money are we talking about? Within an opening weekend of the film's release, we see huge declarations being made. 'This movie has made 60 crores, 80 crores, 100 crores in 3 days flat'. Kahan se number aaye ye saare? And then this entire figure occupies more than 90% of the film's poster with the name of the film relegated somewhere at the bottom. Filmmakers feel that at the end of the day, history will remember the number, not the film. If this is the way a film should look, i.e. only a box office number, then I am afraid it is not a healthy trend. Rajkumar Santoshi Today, your own film Ajab Prem... is expected to project huge numbers too due to it's massive opening... I am glad that has happened. I made the film with the right intent and went by my instinct. I wasn't following a formula here. Everything just fitted in perfectly for Ajab Prem..., right from getting the right producers like TIPS who have done such a fabulous job in marketing films like Race and Kismat Konnection or getting such a fantastic musical score by Pritam or having the best young actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif on board. I am ecstatic with the film's success because I now won't have to follow the trend of other filmmakers; I would be able to conceive a film and make it the way I want to without compromising on my core ethics. So dabbling in varied genres would continue for Raj Kumar Santoshi? Definitely. I have always told stories that I have felt like telling at any point of time without worrying about trends. Ghayal and Damini were action and drama flicks at the very beginning of my career. Andaz Apna Apna which is so much considered to be a cult classic decade and a half down the line, was a comedy where I shifted gears. Ghatak was an emotional action film. Pukar was an espionage thriller. Khakee had a lot of drama to it. Lajja was about women power. Halla Bol was revolutionary. Today, Ajab Prem... is a comedy. Tomorrow, I may make an entirely different film. That's the way I have been. Come back tomorrow for Part 2 of the conversation where Raj Kumar Santoshi reacts on digs taken on him by other filmmakers, delay in completion of his films, failure of Family and Halla Bol and how he is quite sure that Ranbir and Katrina are sure shot superstars just round the corner.

"Kurbaan looks at terrorism in a slightly different way" - Saif Ali Khan

He is one man every man aspires to be. Royal, sophisticated, charming and a perfect Bond-like personality - suave and smooth. His looks are licensed to kill and built for battle in his latest offering, Kurbaan, where the byline reads 'Some love stories have blood on them'. Well, it's important that he bleeds like the rest of us too. Saif has bitten back at his critics ever since the Dil Chahta Hai days. He is a perfect synonym for the line - Return with the vengeance. He has an answer to all the questions in the world. What's good is that his answers inspire to talk like him, sound like him and be like him. This Nawab has a presence off and on screen that one doesn't easily forget. On screen, he infuses each performance with authority (Ek Hasina Thi, Being Cyrus, Race). Off screen, he packs a punch too. "It's funny when you say that because on one hand you're calling me a Nawab and then I have to make sacrifices too. Does a Nawab make a sacrifice?", he questions, to which you are speechless and have no answer to give. There are hardly any false notes (except that he ain't that good a dancer) in the repertoire of this actor who recently was at the centre of a media frenzy over his love making scene with girl friend and actress Kareena Kapoor in Kurbaan. But this Khan is too level-headed to be distracted by all that. Instead, he channels his considerable energies and intelligence into creating intriguing characters. When he talks, he doesn't command respect but gives it back to you. "I'm so sorry to disconnect you like that. Now that we are back, I hope I have answered your question and I hope you got what you were looking for", he says. His words and ideas tumble, and swirl so quickly that the room in which he is sitting for an interview practically starts humming. We're sure it did exactly that when the London press was interviewing the stylised actor in his hotel room. Talking to UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel, Saif reveals his sacrifices, how unpredictable his girlfriend and actor Kareena Kapoor can be, their poster frenzy and his new name: Antonio Banderas of the Indian Film Industry. Was London a long and a strenuous journey for you? Yes and No. The first day was pretty hectic but we had yesterday to relax and today has been quite quiet. We are off to Dubai for our second leg of Kurbaan promotions. What sacrifices did the Nawab had to come while filming Kurbaan? It's funny when you say that because on one hand you're calling me a Nawab and then I have to make sacrifices too. We work really hard in our profession and I don't mean to tom-tom about that. But this was a brilliant film shoot. We were shooting in minus eighteen degrees Celsius inside a tube train in Philadelphia. It was getting dark at two in the afternoon. It was like shooting night shifts (laughs). We were quite tortured. But as an actor, there are many sacrifices one makes anyway. Most importantly, you sacrifice your time. You devote everything to your profession and focus only on that and gain benefits later. Films have given me so much of everything I am, really. We were shooting in minus eighteen degrees Celsius inside a tube train in Philadelphia. It was getting dark at two in the afternoon. We were quite tortured Is Kurbaan an enlightenment in itself? Is it an enlightenment in itself, I don't know. I think Kurbaan is an important movie because it looks at terrorism in a slightly different way. There is a voice of modest charm in it. Primarily it's a thriller with a love story in its core though. That's what is exciting about Kurbaan. Haven't heard of a greater pathos than the soundtrack of Kurbaan. Music will always remain our Indian Film Industry's greatest strengths. It's great to know that you are liking the music of Kurbaan. Salim-Sulaiman have done a fantastic job and have given one of their best albums to date. I love it too. Saif Ali Khan How unpredictable can Kareena Kapoor be as an actor and your co-star in the film? I think she likes doing, clearly from her choices, very different types of roles and she is very adaptable to the different worlds our directors create for her. Kareena is spontaneous and the most surprising thing is how she manages to play diverse roles more than diverse films. Films and posters in our Industry have gone through a significant change over the years, haven't they? Yes, but there are two different things here. Firstly, we should all focus on making good films rather than thinking of international or national interest. It should be a good movie which makes sense. I also hate the word 'Bollywood' you know. We should start calling ourselves the Indian Film Industry and make films for ourselves than others rather than fall under the trap of being a cache type of cinema. Secondly, we produce films, right? I think one of the most interesting things about film production is the first poster you unveil of your film. Like Love Aaj Kal poster took us forever to make. But with Kurbaan I remember we were doing this bold scene and I told Rensil that this could be our poster and he agreed. That happened quite quickly. Posters have to give you the essence and the spirit of the movie. Kareena is spontaneous and the most surprising thing is how she manages to play diverse roles more than diverse films Does Kurbaan have a backdrop of September 11? No. It doesn't have a backdrop of September 11. I think the world has witnessed so many different acts of terrorism recently, be it Mumbai or London or the United States that the film has a semi fictitious backdrop based on reality events. Let's not get into what and where because Kurbaan is a fictional story. Is Kurbaan giving out any kind of a social message? Yes, there is an important message which Kurbaan gives out. But it's not a preachy movie. The idea is to put a message across in such a way that people think they haven't been preached. The message I think is about love. It is one of the most wonderful emotions in the world. It really does conquer all. How do you take this compliment? Saif Ali Khan, the new Antonio Banderas of Bollywood? (Laughs out loud) Again, I wish that people stop comparing us, with all due respect, with the West. I mean, Saif Ali Khan is doing well. We are still benchmarking Indian actors by looking to the West. First it was Sean Penn, then came Johnny Depp and you broke the news about Antonio Banderas. Saif Ali Khan You've worked in Dharma Productions in Kal Ho Na Ho which was a benchmark film five years ago. Now they are releasing Kurbaan. Times have changed, haven't they? Yes they have. These are the same people who made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Na Ho. They were working on melodrama and lot of emotions. Suddenly you see them venture in Wake Up Sid, Kurbaan and My Name is Khan. That's really wonderful to see that they are ready to experiment with different genres and knowing Karan Johar for so long, I am not surprised to see the change. For an audience, it may come across as one. Anything you'd like to mention about Vivek Oberoi and Rensil D' Silva? I think Vivek has done a tremendous job. He is a very good actor. His contribution to Kurbaan is immense. I really hope this film does good for him and as far as Rensil is concerned, I am really happy that he has made a film like this because he comes from the sensibilities of an ad-film world and international cinema. I'm sure he'll have something special to offer because he is very rooted with the Indian cinema. Rensil is very observant and a very loving human being. Define Kurbaan Kurbaan is intense but let me say (after a pause) it is shocking too.
