Danny Boyle wary of "Slumdog" kidsOscar winning director Danny Boyle is reportedly frustrated with the increasing financial demands being made by the parents of the child stars of "Slumdog Millionaire".Source: Entertainment News | 5 Nov 2009 | 8:50 am When Abhishek carried his father piggyback for a sequence in PaaFor a sequence in Paa, Abhishek needed to carry his father piggyback and trot across a vast field. An exercise in role reversal that had everyone on the sets petrified and apprehensive. After all, it is one thing to play your real life father's father. But to carry him on your back and run in paternal passion is quite another. To director Balki's surprise and relief, Abhishek simply breezed through the difficult scene. "Abhishek did it in one take. He carried his father effortlessly across the vast field. We shot the sequence near Cambridge in England at a place called Bury St Edmunds." The place was chosen not just for its green acres which facilitated Abhishek's run with his father on his back, but also to avoid large crowds of gawking Indians. On asked how he felt to be carried by his own son, the Big B quipped, "Carrying me piggyback was Abhishek's job. Jaya and I merely produced a strong boy! No, the most tedious part of playing the 12-year old boy in Paa was the makeup. I had to sit still for 4-5 hours every morning without moving, eating or even drinking water. For a sunrise shot I had to be up from 11 pm the previous night doing the makeup to be able to shoot on time the next morning."Source: Indiafm.com Features | 5 Nov 2009 | 6:27 am Prithvi Festival set to roll this weekend

Source: Entertainment - Google News | 5 Nov 2009 | 3:05 am "Ajay, Salman had no time to publicize London Dreams" - Vipul ShahPrakash Jha has a lot to be answerable for. If Ajay Devgn was unable to give time for publicity of London Dreams, it's because the dates that Ajay had allotted to promote London Dreams were used to shoot the climax of Jha's Rajneeti in Bhopal. "We knew we didn't have the stars until the 20th of October. Unfortunately there was a big problem with the climax of Rajneeti," Vipul admits. Frantic with worry when Ajay couldn't show up for the London Dreams publicity as promised, Vipul rang up Prakash. "I had a long conversation. Prakash explained the crisis he was going through. If I had insisted on taking Ajay away Prakash's climax would've suffered very badly. Prakash was in deep sh*t. And I couldn't let him suffer for my film's publicity. Ajay is in any way never keen on publicizing a film. He went out of his way to promote All The Best because that was his own home film. But that was it." As for Salman, Vipul explains, "We had to send him to Dubai and London because he wasn't seen much in the international market. In India I thought I'd hold fort with Ajay. With Prakash needing Ajay in Bhopal I was helpless." On Sunday evening, Vipul met his principal cast of Ajay Devgn, Salman Khan and Asin to plan some emergency promotional strategy for London Dreams. Vipul admits the stars haven't made themselves available for ample marketing events for his films. "I planned so many things with the stars because the director alone doesn't amount to much eyeballs on television or live events. I planned concerts with Salman, Ajay and Asin. They didn't have the time. Even my music composer -singer Shankar Mahadevan was in the US." Though he doesn't say it out loud, Vipul blames the lack of initial on his helpless dependence on supposedly saleable stars and their inability to promote the film. "But what do we do? We need stars to come and see our films." Regarding the unanimous panning of the music on London Dreams, Vipul offers his defense. "The music got submerged in a whole lot of other music scores. 20 music albums got released within a month. None of the music has worked. My music didn't get a chance. But if you look at the scores of A R Rahman, they're invariably written off and then go on to be cult successes." Vipul is confident the music of London Dreams is destined for greatness. "The last song 'Khwab' has the audience watching till the very end. I've been also criticized for showing foreigners cheering the Indian performances. But the audience is a mixture of Indians and foreigners at any such concert in Britain. If you go to any underground club in London all the goras are dancing to Indian songs. When we got a crowd of 8,000 concert watchers, there were 125 white junior artistes. How come only these 125 gora are being noticed?" Vipul has also been criticized for editing his material in a way where Salman's behaviour appears unexplained in the second-half. "Kaminey had so many editing inconsistencies. Why didn't people notice it? Why is there so much resistance against my work? Why do my films get written off in the first two weeks? First day we opened moderately. On the second, day we got better. But there was the India-Australia cricket match. By the third day our collections were steady." Vipul admits London Dreams got below-expectation opening. "That's because both Ajay and Salman had a release fifteen days earlier. They were busy promoting their home productions All The Best and Main Aur Mrs Khanna, respectively. When I got my release dates those films were not scheduled on those dates. Audiences can't go to see three Salman Khan films and two Ajay Devgn films in six weeks' time."Source: Indiafm.com Features | 5 Nov 2009 | 3:03 am Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie to star in The Tourist?Washington (ANI): Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie may soon share the screen in new film The Tourist. According to Nikhil, Patiala House has been inspired by real life instances. Patiala House, which stars Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma along with the evergreen jodi of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, tells the story of a joint family set in South hall, London. Patiala House's patriarch is Gurkreeat Singh Kalon (Rishi Kapoor) who rules and runs his family life just like a prime minister would run a government. He is a strict disciplinarian whose authority and rules are not questioned by anybody in Patiala House. Every addition in the family; be it a cousin or a cousin's cousin all get accommodated in Patiala House and every new wedding results in the house and family getting bigger and bigger. Speaking about this film based on a joint family, Nikhil Advani says, "Our story is universal in spirit as it is a story about all joint families who have a patriarch who decides their lives and wants to keep everyone under one roof. Kalon family has been living for the last four generations in South hall and its patriarch (played by Rishi Kapoor) has created his own fiefdom in Patiala House. The entire concept of the film has been conceived by Rahul Nanda, son of famed writer and novelist Gulshan Nanda." Shooting of the film commences in December this year and the film is slated to release in Diwali 2010.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 9:52 am Bollywood dance is popular in Bangkok: Thai actressThe Bollywood song and dance culture has been making waves in the US for a long time.Source: Entertainment News | 4 Nov 2009 | 9:12 am Not many interested in making children's films: Nandita DasLamenting that they could not find even 12 good children's films made in India to make up an Indian section in the children's film festival, actor and now the chairperson of the Children's Film Society (CFSI) Nandita Das said that not many filmmakers are interested in making movies for children.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 4 Nov 2009 | 9:00 am Children's film festival to offer much more than moviesCan films be a part of the school curriculum? Speaking about his film, producer Pritish Nandy said, "Saluun is a delightful film that captures the magic, the excitement and the sheer genius of small town, middle class India where people are constantly coping with the weird complexities of politics, bureaucracy and corruption. It is based on a true life incident that happened in a small town in Maharashtra where the local people were so fed up with corrupt Government officials that they devised a cunning plan to teach them a lesson. It is a funny, touching, deeply evocative film about the India we rarely see in our Bollywood movies and the story is told with amazing power and simplicity. It is a first time film maker's tribute to ordinary, middle class India and how it copes with everyday adversity and comes up a winner every time. He has got everything synonymous to the Pali Hill boys of Bandra and being one himself, he quotes, "Pali Hill boys rock". With his soulful dark eyes and his chiselled good looks, he cuts a very dashing image as he resumes the sexiness he possesses to charm the opposite sex in APKGK. Let's face it; Ranbir Kapoor's face is now being stapled over the walls of teenage girls across India. They are falling in love with him; some girls want to get married to him while the others want to share their joys and sorrows with him. Some are looking for the exact qualities of Ranbir in her man while some think he is a part of their history lessons. Believe it or not, Ranbir Kapoor is a part of Indian culture now, and if that's an understatement, I don't know. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent Devansh Patel talks to the man of the month, the man behind the mask and the man of the year, Ranbir Kapoor about his journey from waking up to falling in love, his midas touch, his mature man image, his flirtatious days in school, his Pali Hill days, the talented Katrina Kaif, the change in Indian cinema which is just around the corner and his wish to see the Oscar selected Harishchandrachi Factory. From waking up to falling in love. How's your journey going? Well, it may sound spooky but I have shot for both the films simultaneously, Wake Up Sid and APKGK. Both have been extremely different from each other. Wake Up Sid did some really good stuff for me post its release and I hope that this good stuff continues. Katrina is known for her midas touch she has been giving to all her films. Now with you on board, I'm sure it's going to be a golden affair Wow! Thank you so much. But honestly, I don't believe in Midas touch, luck and all. We just work hard on films, that's all. We work hard because we are very passionate about cinema. We just need the appreciation flowing by the audiences. The characters in the film are serious, and when they are in a serious problem, the audience will see them in a funny way In your growing up years, how much has comedy as a genre changed for you as a viewer? As far as comedy genres are concerned, no film can beat Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Andaz Apna Apna. They are the baap of all comic films in India. But I don't think that APKGK is a rom-com. Actually, it's a com-rom. It's got more comedy and yes, there is an underlying love story in the film. Every thing done in APKGK is done in a comic way. The characters in the film are serious, and when they are in a serious problem, the audience will see them in a funny way. For them, it is serious but for it's viewers it is pure comedy. Click above for more movie stills What about Raj Kumar Santoshi? After making Andaz Apna Apna, does he still have the same funny bone? Raj Kumar Santoshi has really excelled in every genre. He has tried a movie with every subject. I was enthusiastic to work with Tips and Raj Kumar Santoshi because I loved the story of the film. I was laughing my a** off when I was hearing it. It's strange but what I heard in the narration was exactly what was projected on the screen. Sometimes movies don't turn out exactly the way you hear them. But Raj-ji has done just that. He stuck to his narration, scenes just followed. Your father quotes, 'Ranbir is mature now'. Are you? Honestly, my father is not very kind with the words he says and he is really a miser with voice in trying to appreciate something and he was proud of me post Wake Up Sid too. That feels good because he is my biggest critic. He has always called a spade a spade. If he appreciates something that I've done, it truly feels special. He hasn't seen the final cut of APKGK but I am dying to look forward to his criticism or his praise in it. I was always having crushes on teachers and my mothers' young friends who used to wear short clothes Like your earlier film, is APKGK targeted to the youth again? Not really. This film is targeted to the family audience. It's not a crude comedy and it's not a comedy which only the youngsters will enjoy or only parents will enjoy. You'll get the exact same reaction from the grandparents all the way down to their kids. We've made a film that caters to a larger audience than a film like Wake Up Sid. Pali Hill boys are the biggest flirts in Mumbai. That's what they say. How 'ajab' was your way of impressing the chics back then? Well, my infatuation started way back in junior school. I was always having crushes on teachers and my mothers' young friends who used to wear short clothes. I realised women very early in my life. I don't know if I'm a flirt, I don't know if I'm charming enough or I don't know if I'm really shy when it comes to women. But I'm not so bad when it comes to appreciating beauty and having crushes on women. Pali Hill boys rock! How do you define a strange love? If it is to do with the film, I'd call it an ajab angle. Love is strange because it makes you do strange things. Do you think Katrina is cast in films because of her beauty and charm or is she really talented? I think Katrina is cast in her films only for the kind of talent she is, the kind of hard work she brings in to her films, the kind of positivity she brings in too is infectious. Today APKGK is hot because it has a lot to do with Katrina Kaif. She has a huge fan following. She didn't know a word of Hindi language and today she is one of the biggest film stars of our country. That is commendable and we shouldn't belittle her by saying that she only gets work because of her looks. What have you learnt by being a son to Darshan Jariwala? That he is a good father (laughs). You get to learn everyday working with talented people like Darshan Jariwala. We youngsters learn the kind of dedication they have, the kind of craft they possess, the kind of passion they have and the kind of actors they are. They aren't greedy, they'll do their job and they are patient. I hope I at least have half of their talent when I reach their age. Katrina is cast in her films only for the kind of talent she is, the kind of hard work she brings in to her films, the kind of positivity she brings in too is infectious Every generation makes way to another. The genres being made now and the films that are being thought upon are somehow liked more by the today's generation. Is change around the corner? I really do believe in the kind of change we can bring to Indian cinema. All we can do is bring good stories, be a part of good films, etc. APKGK isn't just targeting the youth, as I said earlier. Everybody can see it. But as long as you make a film with heart and with a lot of conviction, it'll work. The only thing is that your story has to be honest. We do not want to restrict ourselves to target a certain mass or class of people in the films we make because films is an expensive medium in which you have to recover costs. I don't think the youth can fill the theatres for a long period of time. Yes, they do bring in the power and the excitement and the fan following. Have you seen the Oscar selected movie from India - Harishchandrachi Factory? No, I haven't but I am dying to see it. I really have no time right now as I'm shooting. But I would love to see it as soon as possible. I have been hearing a lot about the film and that it deserves an Oscar. My best wishes to Harishchandrachi Factory.Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 6:06 am The MAMI DiariesIt's a Mumbai I have never seen, as filmmakers and enthusiasts from nooks and crannies of India converge onto screens across Mumbai for the 11th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. What started as a star-studded, red-carpet affair has emerged, over the last week, as a cornucopia of some excellent Indian & world cinema, animated cinematic conversations, film premieres and cocktails and some serious celebrity spotting. I can't show the movies, but if you missed all the action, here's a lowdown of the 11th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF): The festival started on a high note with Shashi Kapoor receiving, in person, the life-time achievement award conferred by MAMI. Tinsel town's most famous faces came out in large numbers for the Indian premiere of Steven Soderberg's The Informant, and milled around when the opening ceremony started late. Besides showcasing the best and latest of world cinema, MFF provided a platform to regional Indian cinema, notably two Konkani films - AB Corp's Vihir (The Well) and NFDC's The Man Beyond The Bridge. Both films are doing rounds of the international film festival circuit, will be released theatrically in India and had their very own press-cons at MFF. Vihir's director Umersh Kulkarni thought out loud, "It depends on how you judge the success of a film - by the number of people who watch the film or how deeply the film affects those who watch it." The National Film Development Corporation was for years the lodestar for independent cinema in India, and funded and produced classics like Pather Panchali and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron. But the corporation remained largely inactive in the recent past. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, NFDC Managing Director Neena Gupta cleared the air, "We produced eight films in the past year. NFDC has a cultural mandate to promote diverse and good cinema and will continue doing so, notwithstanding the commercial considerations." In good news for cinema fans, the corp. is also doing film restoration work on its huge catalogue and might come out with DVDs, very soon. A film festival in Mumbai cannot be celebrity-free, but MFF gave movie-lovers an opportunity to catch up with their favorite actors/writers and have some serious cinematic discussions. Spotted were Prem Soni, Kamlesh Pandey, Mohan Agashe, Rema Lagoo, Anu Agarwal, among others. Antichrist was unarguably the most scandalous film in the festival because of a surfeit of on-screen sex, violence and gore. All of the film's shows ran full theatre, with people crowding the stairs. Other films which were well received by the audience were Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank and Shahram Alidi's Whispers with the Wind. Many in the audience felt that being able to watch legendary Greek film maker Theo Angelopoulos' retrospective on the big screen was quite a fortune, as the 35mm prints of his films are very rare. Angelopoulos' films are really enjoyable because of their memorable characters and the unique visual treatment. Native student talent was found in action at MFF in the form of an acting diploma film from FTII, Amit Dutta's The Man's Woman And Other Stories, three short films put together, shot on a shoe-string budget. The film proves that quality cinema can be made in India on very low budgets. Moreover, the fest also had a competition of short films made by college students of Mumbai, an encouraging step for budding film makers. There's always a good audience and a not-so-good audience. Some people were really serious about what they had come to watch, others were not really exposed to films. In one of most engaging moments of the film, suddenly you would hear people laughing; reacting the way the film maker would not have wanted them to react. They were not watching the film for what it is, but just like that. Point in case: Antchrist is a very sensitive film, the sex and gore really shakes you up and makes you wonder. But if you do not watch it in that perspective and just as on-screen erotica or gore, then it just shows you are an amateur viewer. Yet the fact that people came to watch such films, is a big deal, because that means they are forcing themselves to watch something they have not been exposed to before. A step towards the better or as an avid film student told me, "a week full of films for a thousand bucks, is a sweet deal!"Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 6:02 am Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to host Oscars
Source: NDTV Entertainment News | 4 Nov 2009 | 5:55 am Controversy over 'Vande mataram' irrelevant: Javed AkhtarVeteran Bollywood scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar believes the controversy over the national song 'Vande mataram' is obsolete and those who have any objection to it should simply not sing it.Source: IndiaeNews.com: Bollywood News | 4 Nov 2009 | 5:04 am Javed Akhtar on fatwa against Vande Mataram''This controversy is old and obsolete. Vande Mataram is part of Bankimchandra Chatterjee's novel Anand Math. All the villains in this novel are Muslims. Ultimately, the Muslims lose and the novelist feels happy that the Britishers have come to save us from these so-called 'barbaric' Muslims. This is the song of the militant sadhus in this novel. There were two stanzas of strong religiosity in this song. When talks arose of making Vande Mataram a national anthem, it was pointed out by rational elements that the novel was anti-Muslim. The Congress decided to take out the two rabidly religious stanzas and the rest of the song was retained. The controversy ended there. What is this new resistance? The objection is redundant. You don't want to sing Vande Mataram? Don't! Who is forcing you? I sing it. I don't see it as objectionable. If you do, don't sing it. Why do you insist on bringing such irrelevant matters centre stage? It's a non-issue and unnecessarily provocative. I've written songs with Vande Mataram in them. I used the term Vande Mataram in Priyadarshan's Saza-e-Kala Pani. Then I used the term for a song in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and finally for a song that's used at the military academy at Dehra Doon. Please don't make an issue out of a non-issue. These are non-entities.''Source: Indiafm.com Features | 4 Nov 2009 | 3:37 am Rakeysh to make Mirza Sahiban next; also plans to release new version of Delhi 6The script for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's next film is almost done. "Actually it's a couple of scripts and I will choose from them," says the director. He admits he is in all probability making the period romance Mirza Sahiban next. But the original cast Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor may change. "The moment you write with actors in mind you restrict them and yourself. So I'd rather wait until the script is finished before casting." Rakeysh showed the new-cut version of Delhi 6 at the Venice Film Festival on September 9. "The kind of reception I got in a 1600-seater theatre, was unexpected. It was meant to be only one screening. But they suddenly decided to screen the film on the closing day of the Festival which is very prestigious." Now Rakeysh intends to release the new version of Delhi 6 (with Abhishek Bachchan's character dying off) in India very shortly.Source: Indiafm.com News | 4 Nov 2009 | 3:23 am Aamir Khan's '3 Idiots' to release on Christmas dayMUMBAI (Reuters) - Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan will next be seen in the celluloid adaptation of author Chetan Bhagat’s best selling fiction 'Five Point Someone'.Source: Reuters: Bollywood News | 4 Nov 2009 | 2:20 am
